A description of the factors causing outbursts and rockbursts in coal mines is given. The mechanics of both outbursts and rockbursts can be described in terms of conversion of stored strain energy in the coal and surrounding rocks into kinetic energy through failure. The major difference between the two phenomena is that gases adsorbed onto the coal structure and desorbed during deformation contribute to the energy available during outbursts and may also affect the loading and unloading characteristics associated with failure. The amount of energy involved and the type of phenomenon are related principally to gas content depth and rock behavior.

Full-face shield leg pressures in a longwall panel for a three-month period were collected and analyzed. The pressure data were presented in the following forms: full- panel full-face shield pressure, individual shield pressure, full-face shield pressure, full-panel time-weighted-average pressure, and relationships among setting pressure, final pressure and pressure increment. Although shield pressure varies from shield to shield and from cycle to cycle, the setting pressure and face advance rate do control the 6nal pressure and time-weighted average pressure.

Although floor failure at longwall faces has been traditionally associated with a soft floor, in many csses floor buckling has been observed just ahead of the longwall supports, despite the floor being a competent rock The floor failure is associated with the presence of weak bedding planes in the floor and the movement of strata towards the goaf opening. This paper presents the principles of the floor failure based on numerical modelling and field observations and outlines the practical approach to estimate the risks involved with floor failure.

The successful extension of the applications in which rockbolts can be used in the German coalmining industry is, because of the very great raining depth combined with a high degree of stress in the native rock, only possible on the basis of a comprehensive quality management system. The quality assurance system consists of material tests on the individual component parts of a rockbolt, of test rig trials of installed rockbolts, of suitability tests underground and of measures for quality assurance during roadway drivage. Only on the basis of exact knowledge of the way in which installed rockbolts function in the underground and possible sources of error and faults can quality assurance be guaranteed during roadway drivage.

An investigation was performed to determine the sequence of events which caused the 1987 surface subsidence and related damage to several homes in Walker County, Alabama, USA (see Figure 1). Surface affects compared to mine maps indicated the subsidence to be mine related. However, two coal seams had been worked under this area. The upper seam, the American seam ranged from 250 to 280 feet beneath the surface in the area in question. It was mined-out before 1955 by room-and-pillar method leaving in place narrow-long pillars to support the overburden strata, and abandoned in 1955. The lower seam, the Mary Lee seam, ranged from 650 to 700 feet beneath the surface. The Mary Lee seam had been abandoned in 1966 and subsequently became flooded. The dewatering of the Mary Lee seam workings in 1986 caused the submerged pillars to be exposed to the atmosphere. Due to multiple seam mining and the fact that workings had been inundated then dewatered, a subsurface investigation ensued to determine the sequence and ultimate cause of surface subsidence. Core sample tests with fracture analysis in conjunction with "down-the-hole" TV camera inspections provided necessary information to determine that the subsidence started in the lower seam and progressed through the upper coal seam to the surface. Evidence from the investigation program established that dewatering of the lower seam workings caused the marginally stable support pillars and the roof to collapse. This failure triggered additional subsidence in the upper seam which broadened the area of the influence at the surface.

Through the combined efforts of the C. S. Bureau of Mines, the coal industry, and Burrell Construction and Supply Company, New Kensington, PA, a steel fiber reinforced concrete crib block to improve coal mine safety in the area of roof control has been developed and is currently in use commercially. The development objective was to improve health and safety conditions with a stiffer, stronger, nonflammable roof support at a competitive cost. During the time this method of roof control has been in use in the mining industry, it has proven to be both functionally and economically effective.

In this paper, an equation is developed to characterize the relationship between the UBC and plate size using a boundary integral approach. The equation was validated by the results from mo& than seventy (70) plate loading tests of different sizes conducted in various underground coal mines throughout the Illinois Coal Basin. The equation indicates that the UBC decreases as the plate size increases. The fundamental solution for this boundary integral problems is the Boussinesq equation. The load exerted by the plate on the floor surface is assumed to be uniformly distributed. Both normal and tangential loads are considered. It is also assumed that the floor fails in shear in a plate loading test. The equation may provide the mine operators with a useful tool to obtain from a plate load test of any plate size the UBC value required by the regulations.

The Bureau of Mines has developed a portable, lightweight device for determining the integrity of resin-grouted roof bolts. The instrument functions by sending a known pulse of ulstrasonic energy into the bolt and comparing the amount of energy reflected hack with the original measured pulse. Where the bolt is properly bonded or coupled with the rock, the energy passes through the bolt-resin-rock interface and dissipates in the rock. Where the bolt is not properly coupled, the energy is reflected back along the bolt to the instrument. The ratio of reflected energy to the pulse approximates the fraction of the bolt's surface that is improperly bonded. The instrument is easy to use. The operator holds the sensor head of the device firmly over the head of the bolt to be tested, causing the pulse of ultrasonic energy to be imparted to the bolt. The device then listens for reflected energy. This cycle is repeated about 200 times per second until an evaluation of the bolt installation is made and indicated by colored lights in the display window. Bolts having 50% or less of their surface bonded are considered had and cause a red light to he illuminated. Bolts with 50% to 75% of their surface bonded cause a yellow light to be lit and are considered marginal. Bolts having more than 75% of their surface bonded are considered good and cause a green light to be lit. The indicator lamp remains on for about 4 seconds and then goes off, indicating that the instrument is ready for another test.

Board and pillar system of mining has beer, practised in India in view of abundant availability of cheap labour force, low investment and quick return. Subsequently, selective mining from thick seems and partial mining under surface features boosted the trend. As s result over 2000 million tonnes of coal is locked up in form of developed pillars inclusive of about 1000 million tonnes of high grade coking coal in Jharia field alone. The trend of pillar formation is still uninterrupted as the estimated pillar reserve in this field in 1974 was only 700 million tonnes which increased to 961 million tonnes in 1983. The trend is not much different in other coalfields end as a rough estimate 100 million tonnes of virgin coal reserve is being transferred to pillar every year. The method of board and pillar mining is likely to remain moat preferred technology for decade9 to come in view of several inherent advantage in Indian mining conditions.

The reinforcement mechanism of suspension effect is analyzed based on beam-column theory. The equations of the maximum bending stress, deflection and transferred bolt load for the bolted roof strata are derived. In the analysis, the bolt load is assumed to be point load and the horizontal stress is uniformly applied to each stratum. The reinforcement mechanism of friction effect is also analyzed. The major function of roof bolting in this case is to create the friction¬al resistance by tensioning the roof bolts, thereby the individual thin strata are "welded" into one single thick stratum. Based on the results, equal spacing of roof bolts is used in the suspension effect while for friction effect, the bolts should be spaced based on equal shear force concept. The design nomographs for the proper bolting pattern and bolt ten¬sion of mechanical roof bolting systems are presented for practical applications.

In underground coal mines, grouting method is employed in order to reinforce the floor and to control the movement of groundwater into the roadway. However, the seepage and the reinforcement behavior of the grouting material into the floor are not clearly understood. Therefore, grouting is today normally based on empirical relationships and on the experience of the grouting personnel. To assist grouting projects, it must be acknowledged that many of the flow and the hardening processes occurring during grouting so far defy mathematically analysis. From this point of view. this paper discusses the behavior of grouting material, when it is injected into the roadway floor, by means of 3-D Eulerian-Lagragian seepage analysis. Moreover, the effectiveness of reinforcement grouting on the mechanical properties of slaking-prone mine tunnel floor are studied by means of several laboratory tests. Approximately 100 million fully grouted rebar roof bolts are installed each year in the United States, 80% are B-Series (5/8 inch fully grouted rebar in a one-inch borehole). The lesser used more expensive A-Series (3/4-inch fully grouted rebar in a one-inch borehole) maximizes resin performance. Standard B-Series provides only 60% of the pull out resistance of A-Series. The Eclipse System was developed by Minova USA Inc. and marketed with Excel Mining Systems to improve the performance of B-Series. A 1/8-inch offset bolt head combined with a specially formulated Eclipse Lokset resin cartridge results in increased mixing efficiency and more uniform resin anchorage. Over two million units have been sold to date; the majority of these Eclipse bolts have been sold to coal mines in the Illinois Basin. Pull testing has demonstrated that a Grade 60 Eclipse bolt provides equal or superior pullout resistance as compared to a Grade 40 No. 6 rebar. Short encapsulation pull tests have yet to consistently demonstrate the superior pullout strength of Eclipse to standard B-Series, however 12 inch Eclipse grouted columns have successfully held in excess of the bolt yield load. The successful substitution of Eclipse bolts for A-Series has significantly reduced the primary roof support costs by approximately $0.18 per foot of bolt. Recent over coring analysis of various anti-gloving methodologies performed in New Zealand has confirmed the superior mixing of the Eclipse system (5).

The trend in underground room-and-pillar cod mining is to employ remote-control continuous mining machines to take extended cuts of 40 A or more. Roof fall safety hazards to the mine worker associated with 4ed cutting are not completely de6ned but are known to include removal of the miner operator from the protective canopy, non-compliance with approved cutting depth and CM operator positioning. This report summarizes ground control research performed by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (?-JIOSH) researchers at the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory concerning extended cuts. A combination of statistical analysis and underground investigations have been conducted. Statistical analysis of extended cut use, along with roof fall accidents and fatalities data delineate the extent of the problem in U.S. coal mines. Additionally, an underground study is described where the long-term roof stability of extended cut areas are compared to standard cuts.

After 34km of roof bolted drivage the first fall of ground occurred at the Phalen Colliery in the maingate of the 8th East longwall panel. The fall occurred over the stage loader as the wall approached an area of poor roof geology. This area had developed a severe cutter since initial drivage and the longwall had yet to mine through 500m of even worse conditions. This paper describes the cause of the poor roof conditions, the use of polyurethane resin injection and cable bolting to re-stabilize the roof outby the fall, and the measurement of roof movement and performance subsequent to the continuation of mining under the rehabilitated roof.

By applying modern 3D numerical modelling techniques to the analysis of a pillar cascade failure in a room and pillar mine, it has been possible to simulate the collapse and develop an understanding of the role of low rock strength areas within the mine. The cascade collapse occurred in a normal strength area but would not have occurred without the influence of a low strength rockmass in one section of the mine. The numerical analysis made it possible to develop a realistic assessment of the residual pillar strength. With the introduction of regular empirical pillar performance assessments, critical pillars or groups of pillars can now be identified proactively. This has led to an aggressive extraction ratio of 90% that manages pillar failure, avoids pillar and roof collapse and prevents surface subsidence. Since the mine also has significant waste products, the use of backfill for ground support has made it possible to significantly improve the performance of strategically located pillars, and so achieve even higher extraction ratios.

The hydraulic powered supports have been employed in U. S. longwall mining for the past two decades. Yet the sciences of roof control at the powered supported faces remain largely unknown. In order to improve longwall roof control and increase production, a series of questions in longwall roof control should be studied and answered: what is the basic rules of roof behavior in longwall coal faces equipped with the hydraulic powered supports? What is the interaction between the roof, supports, and the floor What is the contact condition of the canopy with the roof, and consequently the load distribution on the canopy? Des the periodic roof weighting really exist in the powered supported face and if so, how does it affect the face area? This paper presents the preliminary analysis of underground observations and instrumentations in a longwall panel with 4-leg shield supports designed to address the questions mentioned above.

The phenomena developed on the influence of thick coal seam no.3 mining, by horizontal slices and rocks caving roof control, in the Jiu Valley coal basin, are very complex. By analyzing the influence volume of underground faces and defining the stress and strain zones, around the faces, it is possible to evaluate the suitable powered support performances. Also, Jiu Valley thick coal seams involve about 50% of reserve balance in the main safety pillars of social, industrial and natural objectives, situated on the mining surface perimeters. For a correct design and drawing of main safety pillars complex research was done with the aim of establishing the subsidence parameters. Upper face rocks medium could be assimilated as a granular medium, which is in a permanent movement. For describing the rocks movement, respectively the ground surface displacement, was taken into account the stochastic mechanics principles. The theoretical solutions are in accordance within situ measurements.

A vast majority of the operating longwall sections use shield-type face supports to provide ground control in the United States. As a co-operative research program between the University of Alabama (UA) and Jim Walter Resources, Inc.(JWR), a joint research program is underway to study interaction of shields with surrounding rock masses. A series of analyses on the response of shields are performed using monitored data at a longwall face in a deep coal mine. In this paper, various effects of parameters, such as leg pressure, setting load, developing load, maximum loading rate, pressure in capsule, and convergence between canopy and base, are discussed and recommended as stability indices. A microcomputer program is being developed for instantaneous interpretation of the shield monitored data, and for giving warnings of potential problems. The preliminary results define the effects of the setting load, developing load, and rate of developing load or leg closure rate. The objective of the study is to understand the shield characteristics and their interaction with surrounding strata in real time, then develop a reliable program for maintaining longwall stability.

The selection of tensioned versus non-tensioned roof bolts, for primary coal mine roof support, has been debated for well over 25 years. The wide spread use of fully grouted rebar marked the beginning of the discussion of the relative importance of bolt tension and the resultant immediate roof compression. The focus is on roof conditions encountered in coal mines however the discussion may be extended to hard rock mines as well. The theoretical bases for both systems are presented, with the analysis focused on the bolt's ability to actually fulfill the theoretical assumptions. Of specific concern are assumptions about bolt tension upon installation and the likelihood of maintaining useful bolt tension over time. The usefulness of tension roof bolting is limited by the mechanical interaction of roof bolt assembly and the rock, which may be valid at the time of installation only. Ambient mine atmosphere and fluctuation in moisture content changes the physical condition of rock, which may have a significant impact on the effectiveness and longevity of bolt tension. Changes in the material properties of the surface of the immediate roof can invalidate the assumptions, which were made in the design stage of roof support system. This means that the roof support in the long term excavations may be inadequate requiring costly rehabilitation. The presented arguments are illustrated with the examples of some relevant experimental data. Tension primary roof bolting is recommended where the immediate roof is: ? In order to investigate locations, source parameters, and source mechanisms of mining induced seismic events, a local network of seismic stations was installed at a coal mine in the eastern part of the Ruhr District (Germany). The recorded events were located with the help of an anisotropic velocity model, which accounts for the fine layering of the carboniferous strata. Most of the events took place about 50 m above the working Luise 76-10. Their locations correlated with the advancing working face, and the number of events increased when pillar edges were undercut. The source mechanism, i.e., the orientation of the fracture plane and the direction of displacement on this plane, could be determined for several seismic events. The majority of them was characterized by a fracture plane parallel to the working face and an almost vertical dislocation on this plane towards the goaf a mechanism resembling the breaking down of the hanging wall. The fracture plane had a dimension of about 100 m. Probably the fracturing of a sandstone layer, located approximately 40 m above seam Luise, was responsible for the observed seismicity
