INTRODUCTION Stillwater Mining Company, with its two underground, hard rock mines in South Central Montana, is the largest primary producer of palladium and platinum in the Western Hemisphere. Platinum Group Metals (PGMs) are mined from a specific zone within the Stillwater Complex, a layered mafic/ultramafic igneous intrusion, named as the J-M Reef. Over much of the J-M Reef, the economically minable, mineralized horizon is contained at typical horizontal widths of 6.5 ft to 8 ft wide. This feature of narrow mining widths has made it challenging to safely and effectively mine these areas of the J-M Reef using mechanized cut and fill and sublevel sill development mining methods. Mechanization of most or all of the steps of the mining process is important to Stillwater in the continuous pursuit of high standards in safety and health. Mechanized bolting within the J-M Reef ore production headings is an important piece of reaching these objectives. In general, metal/non-metal mining requires varied mining techniques, as compared to more traditional bedded mineral/resource deposits. Narrow vein mining is a selective mining technique that generates a minimal amount of waste material while obtaining the more valuable ore deposits. Drilling and bolting in narrow vein mining has traditionally been performed with air-powered, hand-held ?jackleg? equipment because mechanized equipment is, typically, too large for the selective narrow vein techniques. In addition, traditional hand-held pneumatic equipment provides significant flexibility for small-opening, narrow-vein developments, reducing waste rock handling and improving ore recovery management. The hand-held equipment is also relatively inexpensive to purchase. Due to its simplicity, it is also relatively easy to train operators to use hand-held equipment. Hand-held equipment has been routinely used to safely install ground support and to develop production faces in hard rock mines for many years. Although it is effective, the hand-held equipment requires operator exposure to certain inherent hazardous conditions in the active face/development mine areas. These include falling rock, tripping hazards, bending/twisting/lifting hazards, high noise levels, and chemical fumes from the hammer exhaust. Based on health and safety statistics from the Stillwater mines, operation of the rotary-percussive hand-held equipment adversely affects the long-term health of the operator?continual jackleg operation frequently results in long term damage to hearing, shoulders, arm and wrist joints, and back injuries. This reduces the quality of life for the operator and also results in higher personnel turnover rates for the mining company.

"This paper describes the Australia, New Zealand Inflatable (ANZI) strain cell, its operation, and recent development for overcoring in exploration boreholes. The ANZI strain cell is an instrument system that uses the overcoring method of stress relief to determine the three-dimensional, in-situ stresses in rock. The instrument has been used successfully for over three decades in numerous underground mining and civil projects, but technical advances over the last decade or so have allowed the system to be deployed in surface exploration boreholes to greater depths than was previously possible. Recent development of a downhole electronic data logger, a wireline-enabled drilling system, and an instrument deployment system has simplified the process of obtaining three-dimensional overcore measurements at depths approaching 1km to a single shift operation.The capability to deploy ANZI strain cells in surface exploration boreholes represents a significant breakthrough for the design of underground mines and underground excavations generally. High-confidence characterisation of the in-situ stresses at the design stage provides the opportunity to design key infrastructure and mining systems to take advantage of the in-situ stress field from the outset before mining begins. Understanding the three-dimensional, in-situ stress field not only provides a measure of the magnitude and direction of loads acting within the rock mass, it also provides insight into the mechanics of all the various processes driving ground deformations, including which geological fault structures are at limiting equilibrium.INTRODUCTIONThe overcoring method of stress relief is one of the most direct methods for determining three-dimensional, in-situ stresses in rock. The Australia, New Zealand Inflatable (ANZI) strain cell combines overcoring with several other techniques to provide determinations of the three-dimensional, in-situ stress field and the properties of the rock and, importantly, provides an indication of how much confidence can be placed in the measurement. This paper describes the advances that have enabled overcoring of the ANZI strain cell in deep surface exploration boreholes and the development of various complementary techniques that build additional confidence in the determination of the in-situ stress."

A numerical investigation is made into unstable failures of coal pillars (i.e. coal bumps) using the finite difference software FLAC3D. A static energy balance is first derived to calculate the excess energy released as a consequence of unstable failure in rock. Two- and three-dimensional mining layouts are then assessed on their bump-potential based on the magnitudes of excess energy released during simulated pillar failures. A three dimensional pillar model is developed to represent tributary area loading of an infinite room-and-pillar layout. Pillar strength and brittleness characteristics are calibrated using a Mohr-Coulomb strain-softening constitutive law to simulate width-to-height ratio coal pillars ranging from 1:1 to 5:1. Width-to-height ratio pillars 1:1 to 3:1 release large magnitudes of excess energy as the pillars fail, representing massive collapse of room-and-pillar layouts. The larger pillars maintain their residual strength during failure; however significant excess energy is still released during temporary reductions in pillar strength. A two-dimensional model is then constructed of a gate road pillar failing due to elastic rebound of the surrounding rock mass. Soft loading conditions initiate unstable failure for all pillar widths, while the total magnitudes of excess energy increase with the size of pillar being modeled. The results from these tests indicate that excess energy may be used as a direct assessment of the bump potential of simulated mine layouts.

The Powhatan No. 4 Mine is located in southeastern Ohio along the Ohio River in Monroe County. The mine produces approximately 3.2 million tons of steam coal annually from the Pittsburgh No. 8 seam. The Pittsburgh No. 8 seam in this area dips to the southeast in varying amounts from 10-feet to 40-feet per mile. The seam is made up of a main bench coal (4' to 5f' ) containing several thin and variable partings and a rider ("roof") coal (0" to 18") which is separated from the main bench by a parting (0" to 18") that is reasonably consistent in occurrence and position. Strata overlying the seam varies from a bedded to nonbedded calcareous mudstone-claystone (6' to 12') in the north and east regions of the mine to a sandstone (Pittsburgh Sandstone C10' to 40'1 in the south and west regions. The Redstone Limestone (10' to 18' ) overlying the mudstone-claystone in the north and east thins and rises toward the area of sandstone deposition in the south and west. From its opening in April of 1971 until late 1981, primary roof support in the long-1 ived entries at Quarto Mining Company's Powhatan No. 4 Mine had been achieved with 8-foot and 10-foot. 518-inch mechanical roof bolts using a Single expansion shell. These bolts were installed so that the expansion shell achieved a competent anchorage in the limestone. However, as the mine developed westward, the limestone began to trend upward becoming inaccessible as an anchorage medium at the 8-foot and 10-foot horizons. Anchorage achieved in the underlying mudstone-claystone strata was failure-prone due to weathering (after exposure to air and moisture) and inconsistencies in the anchorage horizon, leading to an increase in the incidence of reportable roof falls at the mine. Responding to the threat to safety and productivity posed by the increase in roof falls. Mine Management through its Safety and Engineering Departments, sought solutions to the problem. In seeking a solution to the problem, the safest and en engineering groups examined the reportable roof falls to determine the cause of those failures. Their examination pinpointed two items which were found to be a common link in the majority of those falls; namely, anchor integrity and geologic trends. Analysis of the roof falls indicated that due to effects of air and moisture on the anchoraae zones in the mudstones and clay- itones, the integrity of the anchorage over time could not be maintained. Geologic trends noted included the upward trend of the -main limestone as mining progressed westward, inconsistencies in the amount of roof coal and draw slate in the immediate mine roof and increasing evidence of heavily slickensided immediate mine roof. In the absence of the protective barrier provided by the roof coal, the immediate strata and particularly the draw slate, is susceptible to deterioration due to the weathering effects of air and moisture and thus is prone to "eat out" around the roof bolts and cause roof falls. The presence of heavily slickensided roof creates a need for increased contact surface such as that provided by plank and header blocks to aid in holding up the roof and tends to make the behavior of such roof very unpredictable. Having determined the causes of the roof falls. Mine Management began to identify the kind of roof support which would best solve these problems, while at the same time providing the mine with a safe, cost effective and efficient roof support system. This paper will provide an analysis of how this decision was reached, the background that was researched to aid in forming the decision, the considerations that played key roles in the formulation of the plan, the mechanics of following through and implementing the new roof support system, and an assessment of the resultant gains in safety, productivity and improved costs derived from the implementation of the new roof support system.

"The Surface Deformation Prediction System (SDPS) has been developed as an engineering tool for the prediction of subsidence deformation indices through the implementation of an influence function. SDPS provides a reliable and fast method for the prediction of mining-induced displacements, strains, tilt, and so forth at any elevation between the seam and the horizontal or varying surface topography. One of the key aspects in obtaining reliable ground deformation prediction results is the determination of the edge effect offset. The value assigned to the edge effect corresponds to a virtual offsetting of boundary lines delineating the extracted panel to allow for roof cantilevering over the mined out area. The objective of this paper is to describe the methods implemented in updating the edge effect offset code within SDPS. Using known geometric equations, the newly developed code provides a more robust calculation of the offset boundary line of the extracted panel for simplistic, as well as more complex, mining geometries. Assuming that an extracted panel is represented by a closed polyline, the new edge offset algorithm calculates a polyline offset into the extracted panel by the user-defined edge effect offset distance. Surface deformations are then calculated using this adjusted panel geometry. The MATLAB® program was used for development and testing of the new edge effect offset feature. In completing rigorous testing regimes, the new offset features will be integrated into SDPS, further increasing the speed and reliability of the programs resulting in a retrospective increase in capability and flexibility. INTRODUCTION Underground operations have been known to cause mining-induced subsidence inside and outside of the mine permit area (Karmis, Agioutantis, and Andrews, 2008). Additionally, subsidence can impact surface water bodies, such as rivers, streams, lakes, and wetlands (Karmis and Agioutantis, 2015; Newman et al., 2016), as well as infrastructure, such as roads, railroads, pipelines, and buildings. With an increase in regulatory focus on mining-induced impacts to local structures, the calculation of mining-induced subsidence indices has become necessary in determining potential damage and mitigation efforts. The accurate prediction and evaluation of mining-induced ground deformations is required to obtain underground mining permits due to potential impacts to nearby structures, as well as hydrogeological sources. The prediction of ground deformation indices is often a complex task due to the number of input parameters required, such as mining geometries, overburden lithology, surface topography, the rate of mining (Karmis, Agioutantis, and Andrews, 2008)."

In the Ruhr district, pipelines of public and private infrastructure are made of cast iron, steel, plastics or asbestos cement. Legal framework, technical regulations and normative standards define which pipeline materials may be used for the transmission of which kind of product Thus ground water endangering substances as well as inflammable or explosive products are only permitted to be transported in steel-made pipelines. Ground movements, due to underground mining, are transmitted via the soil to the pipeline and cause extra strain within the steel pipeline (Figure I). In extreme cases durable deformations may occur, characterized by an oval profile or a fold in the pipeline. To avoid or minimize damages, balancing elements are installed into the concerning pipeline, reducing the ground movements which might otherwise cause damages. [ ] The distance between the balancing elements is not arranged by random, but by a calculation method developed in a doctoral thesis [Spielberg, 1999] which represents the actual available standards in science and technology. The calculation method considers all relevant influencing variables with impacts on the movement behaviour of steel pipelines in mining areas, such as technical data of pipeline design (e.g. steel grade, wall thickness, weld seam quality), soil conditions (e.g. friction), laying depths of the pipelines, the operational impacts (working pressure, corrosion) and the mining impacts. As of today, mining has caused no damages to steel pipelines protected by this calculation method.

"The majority of U.S. underground coal mines use some form of cable bolt as supplemental support to a primary roof bolting system. Many coal operators employ the high load capacity of non-tensioned cable bolts, cable roof trusses, or solid bar trusses in an attempt to suspend the primary bolted horizon to overlying strata. However, in cases where many discontinuities exist in the roof strata or where pre-existing fractures are present, these passive supplemental support systems often cannot adequately control roof deflection. This paper examines the application of tensioned cable systems to minimize roof deflection in very laminated and fractured strata. Three underground case studies are presented to demonstrate the application of tensioned cable bolts. The first case study involves the rehabilitation of a longwall head gate in the Eagle Seam with highly laminated and fractured sandstone. The second case study examines the recovery of a longwall face in the Alma Seam. The final case study addresses rehabilitation of a longwall head gate in the Pittsburgh No. 8 Seam that was developed in a sandstone channel margin area and subjected to horizontal stress concentration.INTRODUCTIONDuring the previous decade, Jennmar Corporation has recognized coal operators' increasing interest in tensioned cable bolts. The majority of these tensioned cable bolt systems have been applied in adverse roof conditions including broken ground, high horizontal stress areas, and highly laminated roof strata. In most cases, qualitative data on roof conditions after application of tensioned cable bolt support indicate successful implementation of these systems. The qualitative evidence suggests that the combination of high load' capacity and applied tension provides superior supplemental roof support in adverse roof conditions. This research aims to quantify the effects of applied tension to cable bolts. This paper will review the types and installation of tensioned cable bolt systems, present initial laboratory test data, discuss successful case studies, and propose an instrumentation system for quantification of tensioned cable bolt performance."

"Standing roof supports help to provide a stable working environment in coal mine gateroads. NIOSH participates in the development of these support systems by conducting full-scale tests in their Mine Roof Simulator. These tests have established the performance characteristics of every coal mine support system currently in use in the United States. Through these tests, mine operators and regulatory officials have acquired a fundamental understanding of the various types of support performance that guides the assessment and use of these support systems. However, some little known factors that influence support behavior can lead to misconceptions and, perhaps, a poor assessment of support behavior at times. This paper highlights several of these factors and discusses their significance. The paper also examines a current longwall tailgate support and discusses the inefficiency with this approach. Finally, the NIOSH Mine Roof Simulator (MRS) is the world’s most powerful load frame built specifically to test full-scale roof supports, including longwall shields. are addressed in this paper to provide a more in-depth assessment of the limitations of the MRS and what the MRS testing protocol is designed to do. INTRODUCTION Over the years, considerable research has been conducted to develop standing support technologies and to evaluate their performance characteristics. The load and displacement characteristics of the standing supports have been determined from full-scale testing conducted using the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Mine Roof Simulator (MRS) (Barczak and Tadolini, 2008) located in Bruceton, PA. Performance traits, installation patterns, and ground responses are observed in various geological and mining conditions and are evaluated to determine the support performance in the field (Dolinar, 2010; Campoli, 2015; Zhang et al., 2012). Despite widespread use of standing supports, not every aspect of their performance and resulting ground support capability are always well understood. This paper discusses 10 factors, several of which are surprising, that impact standing support performance."

The design of support for underground excavations is a complex process in which the interaction between supports and the rock mass must be evaluated. The strength reduction method (SRM) is useful because it provides a stability factor of the supported excavation that can easily be compared between support alternatives. The method is based on numerical model analysis where the stability factor is determined by reducing the rock mass strength until collapse is indicated in the model. This paper presents the results of validation studies that were conducted using the FLAC3D stress analysis software to compare SRMcalculated stability factors to the empirically based Coal Mine Roof Rating (CMRR) and the Analysis of Roof Bolt Systems (ARBS). The objective was to determine whether the SRM, with its basis in mechanics, would predict similar outcomes as the fundamentally different ARBS and CMRR methods with their basis in empirical observations. A total of 450 different scenarios were evaluated in which the geology, horizontal stress, depth of cover, entry width, support spacing, and support length were varied. The results showed that the SRM-calculated stability factors were able to satisfactorily capture both the ?weak bed? and ?strong bed? adjustments in the CMRR. The SRM results were found to be well correlated to the ARBS stability factors for the 450 cases considered. Further analysis showed that the SRM accurately captures the effect of bolt length, depth of cover, and entry width on the overall stability of an entry.

The classical approach to engineering design involves the purely deterministic calculation of the factor of safety, the ratio of strength to stress. The factor of safety is an easy calculation to perform in many circumstances, and it is very easy to interpret the results. The simplicity of the method is both a strength and a weakness. The results of the deterministic factor of safety calculation are simple to determine and interpret, but they have no ability to account for the uncertainty present in the inputs or outputs. Uncertainty is prevalent in geotechnical engineering applications. This uncertainty can stem from spatial variability, poor sampling, a dynamically changing environment, etc. Probability analyses allow input parameters to take the form of a distribution rather than a single value, making them uniquely equipped to handle the uncertainty inherent in geotechnical engineering design considerations. A stochastic approach also has the benefit of providing results as a probability of failure, which is more meaningful than a factor of safety. Though stochastic modeling is becoming more common in many geotechnical applications, it is still not widely used for coal pillar design. The objectives of this study are to justify the concept of using a stochastic approach to coal pillar design and to compare the results of a simple stochastic analysis to those of standard industry practice. A simple synthetic study was performed to compare the results of a probabilistic analysis of coal pillar design to the results obtained from running ARMPS, which is published by NIOSH. Normal distributions were assigned to each input parameter that is required to determine the factor of safety of a single coal pillar. The probability of failure resulting from the synthetic study was found to be more conservative than the ARMPS stability factor. A probabilistic approach to coal pillar design is discussed in comparison to the traditional deterministic approach. The greatest strengths of the probabilistic approach were determined to be the effective handling of uncertainty and the increased meaning of the inputs and outputs inherent to a probabilistic approach.

"Longwall bituminous coal mining has been practiced in Pennsylvania since the 1970""s. Hundreds of longwall panels have been mined during the last 40 years but only 24 have actually undermined Pennsylvania's Interstate Highway System. The impact to interstate highways are summarized in this paper and the factors that influence the magnitude of these impacts are examined.INTRODUCTIONOver the last 30 years, interstate highways in Pennsylvania have been undermined by portions of 21 bituminous coal mine longwall panels. From 2003 to 2008, three of the panel were extracted by the Emerald Mine and six by the Cumberland Mine both in Greene County and both owned by Alpha Resources. Previous assessments of longwall mining under Pennsylvania’s interstates have identified impacts to the highways but no danger to public safety. In general the magnitude and extent of impacts during the recent undermining of Interstate 79 or 179 appears to be similar as those identified in previous studies. The nine longwall panels are among some of the widest in the U.S. They are supercritical in character with overburdens ranging from greater than 152 m (500 ft) to less than 305 m (1,000 ft).The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PA DEP) requested that the University of Pittsburgh summarize observations collected by their staff during the recent undermining of 179. Observations and photographs of impacts to the highway were made by PA DEP staff and entered into reports prepared by California District Mining Office (COMO) staff and statements written into the Bituminous Underground Mining Information System (BUMIS) database. In addition to the observations by the PA DEP, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) conducted a series of detailed land surveys along portions of the highway undermined from 2003 to 2008. To characterize the subsidence basin fanned by longwall mining. PennDOT information has been analyzed by another research group within the university (Guticrre7, et al., 20 I 0)."

"The Broadmeadow punch longwall coal mine in Central Queensland Australia has experienced significant highwall movement associated with the effect of longwall subsidence when the longwalls approach their final position close to the open-cut highwall. In response to this movement, Broadmeadow employed two types of broadscale highwall monitoring (radar and laser scanners) to provide full coverage measurement throughout three consecutive longwalls approaching the highwall. This was to attain a better understanding of the mechanism causing the movement and potentially enable prediction of instability. Results from the monitoring found the highwall is displaced to magnitudes unlike those typically measured in open-cut mining and in direct contrast with typical longwall subsidence behaviour.This paper discusses the ground movements measured, monitoring methods used, safety measures established, as well as theorising the failure mechanism. Recommendations are made for mine and pit designs for future punch longwall layouts. The paper shows how the movements measured are more aligned to some measurements made during stream valley closure studies previously presented at the ICGCM and challenge the mechanisms suggested by previous literature.BACKGROUNDThe mining of longwalls under or adjacent to large voids (e.g., stream valleys, escarpments, or cliffs) is commonly associated with heavily vegetated or steep surface areas. In areas of extreme topographic variance, access to traditional survey pegs and stations or even new radar or laser technologies is limited. In addition, seldom have the longwall layouts aligned themselves parallel or perpendicular to the surface feature, making interpretation of any available surface movement data more complicated.The punch longwall layout (Figure 1) is also quite uncommon (only undertaken at a small number of longwall mines in Australia) but creates the perfect configuration to enable a somewhat controlled study of the effect of longwall subsidence on a steeply dipping surface feature (an un-vegetated, evenly excavated open-cut highwall). The relatively recently developed radar and laser scanning technology has also enabled near continuous, real-time, sub-millimetre monitoring of a full 500m wide x 100m high highwall. Because the punch longwall enables access and a clear view, the technology could be easily deployed as compared to the highly vegetated and variable topography of stream valleys."

Many longwall panels in China are laid out along the dip direction such that the direction of longwall retreat mining is along the strike direction of coal seams. Downward mining longwall panels in steeply inclined seams refers to those that are laid out in a non-uniformly developed fold structure where the seam is not only steeply dipping, but also highly undulated along the strike direction, causing longwall mining extremely difficult because it has to deal with large dip angles that vary both in the mining and faceline directions. Obviously, the characteristics of mine pressure and overlying strata movement in downward mining longwall panels in steeply dipping seams have unique patterns that are very much different from those cases of mining the flat or gently inclined coal seams. The effects of those unique patterns presented a big challenge to production and safety. Almost all previous and current researches on ground control have been concentrated on issues related to the flat and gently inclined coal seams. Conversely, research on steeply inclined coal seams, especially those with large angle variation both along the seam dip and strike directions is almost none. Therefore, it is very important to initiate a study to better understand the characteristics of mine pressure and overburden strata movement for this special type of geological condition. The objective of this paper is to monitor and analyze the characteristics of mine pressure and overlying strata movement in downward mining longwall panels in steeply inclined seams, the angle of which varies greatly along both the seam dip and strike directions. The measured data has conclusively demonstrated that the characteristics of mine pressure and overlying strata movement in downward mining longwall panels in steeply inclined seams are different from those for the flat and gently inclined coal seams. The large downward angles of coal seam undulation along the strike (mining) direction can obviously affect the roof movement and reduce strata pressure. Study in this research showed that appropriately increasing the rate of mining (or face advance) is positive to roof control.

"Over the last five years, the authors have compiled a database of Short Encapsulation Pull Test (SEPT) evaluations from Interior Basin (Basin) coal mines. Typically, SEPT data are analyzed to obtain peak load carrying capacity per unit length of resin encapsulation designated as the ""Grip Factor,"" or GF. In a previous paper, ""An Analysis of Short Encapsulation Bolt Pull Test (SEPT) Data From Interior Basin Coal Mines,"" authors analyzed tangent value of the load-displacement curve as Anchorage Stiffness at 50% (AS-50) of the peak load, or GF value, to assess reinforcement potential of an installed bolt system. This paper attempts to correlate the secant AS VALUES (of SEPT on 6 ft (1.8 m) long installed bolts at a lower load of about four tons from several different mines in the Basin with their MSHA-approved primary support requirements. Since the current regulatory environment requires plan changes dynamically to ensure that roof falls are minimized, the authors hypothesize that the practiced roof control plan must meet the minimum requirement of adequately supporting immediate roof strata. The analyses are based on 181 SEPT studies performed by Minova professionals. Analyses indicate a macrolevel correlation for both roof support density and roof support cost that may have the potential to be used by mine operators to compare their performance with other mines in the area. Limitations of the analyses include ignoring mining depth, mining height and required secondary supports as part of the requirements for a roof control plan. The authors recommend additional analyses to develop this concept further to develop guidelines that can be confidently used by coal companies.INTRODUCTIONPartially- and fully-grouted bolts are extensively used in coal mines for roof support as part of MSHA-approved roof control plans. Since grouted bolts have a larger area of contact with the rock, they can develop much greater anchorage capacity than conventional expansion shell (point-anchored) bolts. Load transfer characteristics and interaction mechanics between steel rebar, grout and rock mass around the bolt hole for grouted bolts are generally assessed in the laboratory or field though short-encapsulation pull tests (SEPT), which have been extensively researched by Aziz and Jalalifar (2005), Aziz (2004a), Serbousek and Signer (1987), Signer (1990), and Mark et al. (2002), among others. In a SEPT, about 12 in. (30 cm) of bolt length is typically encapsulated in resin and a pull test is performed to collect load-displacement data prior to failure and, in some cases, post-failure. A typical load-displacement data set for a bolt is shown in Figure 1. SEPT characteristics are designated by peak load carrying capacity, or grip factor, which is the peak load carrying capacity per unit length of resin encapsulation. SEPT is routinely used to assess anchorage performance characteristics of different lithologies overlying a coal seam to identify type of bolt, bolt diameter, length and spacing across and along an excavation. Anchorage stiffness, or AS, at any load may also be calculated as the tangent or secant value of the slope of the load displacement curve at a particular load level. Anchorage Stiffness characteristics of bolts from SEPT data have typically not been considered in any depth until recently (Chugh et al., 2014; Chugh et al., 2015)."

"Tailgate entries in U.S. longwalls can be subjected to high loads and deformations. Therefore, tailgate entries are generally supported with varying types and amounts of standing support. However, even with standing support, roof falls and blockages can occur in the tailgate when the support system is not properly designed. Safe and efficient operation of a longwall face requires the selection of the appropriate type and amount of standing support. Because of the importance of maintaining a safe and functional tailgate entry, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is currently developing a standing support design methodology based on the ground reaction curve. Using the ground reaction curve for design requires that the ground and support interaction be quantified. This can be accomplished by the installation and analysis of data from instrumented field sites. Although necessary, the field results cannot develop the complete ground reaction curve. Numerical models, calibrated to the field results, are used to establish the complete ground reaction curve. In the present study, data was obtained and evaluated to establish points for calibration of the ground reaction curve for two western longwall operations.One test site, Mine A, was located at a depth of 1,550 ft. At this site, the floor consisted of siltstone, while the roof was an interbedded siltstone and sandstone. Because of the depth, a double row of22-in diameter CANs1 were installed to support the tailgate. Both the first and second longwall panels have mined past the instrumented site.The second site in Mine B is at a depth of only 760 ft. The floor at this mine consists of a weak shale/mudstone and the roof consists of thick, top coal overlain by weak shales. At this site, a double row of pumpable cementitious cribs was installed. The second test site has only been subjected to side abutment loading from first panel longwall mining.The measurements indicate that the support at both mines was heavily loaded when subjected to the side abutment loading from first panel mining. At the deeper site, the support began to yield when the face was more than 300 ft outby during second panel mining. In comparison to results from previous test sites in the Pittsburgh Seam and Illinois Basin, the amount of support loading and roof-to-floor convergence was an order of magnitude higher at the western sites. This has resulted in a significant difference in the position and shape of the ground reaction curves."

"The objective of this paper is to present the development of a software tool that will assist in an area calculation of the Analysis of Roof Bolting Systems (ARBS) support intensity while incorporating more detailed geology, stress, and intersection span input. In this area ARBS tool, a detailed CMRR distribution can be determined from the available geologic database at the mine. In addition, the overburden and multiple-seam stresses, as obtained from the boundary-element program LaModel, can be converted to a “pseudo-depth” which is then used as the depth input to the area ARBS calculation. Finally, the section-specific intersection spans can be determined from the mine design for input to the calculation. All this detailed area input information for ARBS is handled by the latest version of the Stability Mapping (StabMap) program, which now outputs an area ARBS suggested support density given the required input parameters. This final ARBS grid can be plotted, analyzed and overlaid on the mine map for optimum use in support design and for presentation to production personnel.INTRODUCTIONSince the inception of roof bolts in the 1940s, there has been a lack of a universally accepted roof bolting design method (Mark, 2002; Mark and Pappas, 2012). To address this situation, the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Hazard (NIOSH) developed roof support design guidelines, which were incorporated into a computer program called the Analysis of Roof Bolting Systems (ARBS). These guidelines were based on the effects of roof quality, stress, and mine geometry (Mark, Molinda and Dolinar, 2001). The roof rock quality in ARBS is represented by the Coal Mine Roof Rating (CMRR), the depth is used as a surrogate for the stress, and the intersection span serves to represent the mine geometry (Mark, Molinda and Dolinar, 2001). BHP Billiton Illawarra Coal operates Dendrobium Mine in an area 10-20km west-northwest of Wollongong in the Southern Coalfield of New South Wales, Australia. The mine recently completed longwall mining in Area 3A adjacent to an overhanging rock feature known as Sandy Creek Waterfall, which had been identified as a significant, and potentially sensitive natural surface feature of the environment. This waterfall lies within the Sydney drinking water catchment area, in a surface terrain of variable topography where non-conventional subsidence behaviour such as valley closure, and far-field horizontal movements are known to occur, over and above conventional subsidence responses to mining. As a part of the conditions of approval to mine, Illawarra Coal undertook to protect the waterfall and the section of Sandy Creek immediately upstream of the waterfall from the effects of longwall mining using an innovative management process and an array of very high resolution monitoring systems. This paper outlines the type of non-conventional subsidence effects that can occur; the range of different monitoring regimes adopted in response to such effects in order to develop an understanding of the valley closure phenomenon in proximity to the waterfall and provide suitable early warning data. The paper also describes the management processes that were adopted, incorporating the use of these monitoring regimes in order to successfully protect the waterfall from the valley closure effects of mining four adjacent longwall panels in close proximity to the waterfall while continuing to maximise recovery of the coal resource in the area. The management structure adopted involved a technical committee, a steering committee, and an external independent reviewer. The technical committee was responsible for design of the monitoring systems, interpretation of the results, and making timely recommendations to the company steering committee who were then able to make informed decisions on when to cease mining each adjacent panel. The steering committee comprised Illawarra Coal management and technical personnel. Although the steering committee took advice from the technical committee, all decisions relating to mining were made by the steering committee. An external reviewer was engaged by the steering committee at the end of each longwall panel to review the results, interpretation and management decisions. This management structure was effective in successfully protecting the very sensitive structure of Sandy Creek Waterfall from potential impacts of nearby mining in the midst of active ongoing natural erosion processes.

"Historically, the Crinum mine has experienced significant falls of ground when longwall production slowed to prepare for recovery in weak roof areas. These conditions continue through the recovery process and result in both safety concerns and delays. When mine plans and exploration revealed that most of the mine's future longwall recoveries were located in weak roof areas, a decision was made to try pre-driven recovery roads as a solution to the problem. After completing eight pre-driven recovery roads with varying degrees of success and numerous lessons, the Crinum North mine now utilizes a modified Pre-driven Recovery Roadway (PDRR) to improve the longwall take-off process in weak roof areas. During mine development, a standard roadway is driven where the final recovery location of each longwall is planned. After the installation of secondary support, the PDRR is backfilled with a cement-flyash mix to provide support to the roof, and confinement to the ribs and floor of the roadway. The method has been refined over the last four years to provide greater strata stability and improved operational and safety performance compared with conventional take-offs at Crinum, and has resulted in a site record of longwall relocation in 11.5 days (pull mesh to picks in coal). This paper describes the evolution of the PDRRs from Crinum East to Crinum North, including lessons from initial attempts and changes to the secondary support regime, the operational approach during the final stages of retreat, the backfill strategy and plans for the future.INTRODUCTIONThe Crinum mine is the underground component of BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance's (BMA) Gregory Crinum mine, located northeast of Emerald, Queensland (Figure 1).The Crinum mine has a history of roof control problems coming into and during longwall recoveries. Weak roof, combined with the slow mining, which is a consequence of preparing for equipment recovery, pulling mesh (which also creates tip-to-face issues), and the lengthy bolt-up process, often results in loss of immediate roof and subsequent roof falls. In fact, approximately 50% of the first 13 longwall recoveries (which were at depths of 180 to 200m) experienced roof fall delays, the longest of which took four months to mine the last pillar and recover the longwall. This recurring problem prompted the mine to investigate options to reduce or eliminate the problem."

"Underground mines have always been an integral part of the limestone industry. However, beginning in the 1990s, the number of underground limestone mines has increased for many reasons including• Stripping ratios at surface quarries have become uneconomic.• Existing surface quarries have reached the mineral boundaries, and the remaining stone reserves are underground.• Surface access to the entirety of the limestone reserve is limited by development or infrastructure.• The once-rural setting of the surface quarry is now surrounded by subdivisions and development. An underground mine is less intrusive and takes the mining operation out of the public eye.• For larger markets, an underground mine enables year-round production without the sequence of overburden stripping in the winter to expose mineable stone for summer production. This is common at many surface quarries.Multiple-level operations are a natural extension of the decision to mine underground. Most limestone reserves, for example, the Tyrone-Oregon-Camp Nelson, Hermitage-CartersLebanon- Ridley, and Salem Limestones, are sufficiently thick to accommodate multiple levels. Multiple-level mines should be planned by considering each level separately and then integrating the individual levels into a larger mine plan. Failure to plan all the levels of a multiple-level mine in concert can result in ground control (back, pillar, floor, and inter-level sill pillar) problems attributable to stress transfer and interaction between the levels or the necessity to leave a thicker sill pillar between adjacent levels.Multiple-level mine planning begins with geology. Once the upper level back horizon is identified, the geology, rock strength, and physical properties in each level are used to• identify the optimal back horizon• quantify whether back support is required and, if so, the type, spacing, and length of the back support• determine the pillar centers• determine the total mining height, including floor shots"
