Zinc ranks third and lead fourth in world nonferrous metal conumption. In 1972 the free world consumed 3,333,000 mt of refined lead and 4,422,000 mt of refined zinc. The lead tonnage was divided into the following end uses: storage batteries (42%), lead allows (7%), pigments and chemicals (11%), cable sheathing (9%), gasoline additives (13%), pipes and sheets (8%), and miscellaneous uses (10%). The corresponding distribution of zinc uses in 1972 was galvanizing (39%), die casting (26%), brass (15%), rolled zinc (8%), oxide excluding American Process zinc made directly from concentrate (6%), and other uses (6%). The pattern of usage of lead and zinc varies considerably from country to country. During 1972 in the USA 49% of refined lead was consumed in storage batteries, 19% in gasoline additives, and only 3% in cable sheathing, whereas in the United Kingdom 28% of the lead was consumed in batteries, 14% in cable sheathing, and 14% in gasoline additives. For zinc the major US uses were die casting (41%) and galvanizing (37%), with about 3% consumed as rolled zinc; corresponding usages in the same applications in France were 12, 28 and 28% and in Australia 12, 67, and 3%, respectively. The Bolivar Cu-Zn skarn deposit in the Piedras Verdes mining district of Chihuahua is one of many base and precious metal deposits in the north-northwest trending Sierra Madre Belt extending across the states of Chihuahua, Durango and Sonora in northwestern Mexico. The information presented here is drawn from two papers on the Bolivar property1,4 plus new information. Historical mining and exploration for polymetallic Cu-Zn-Pb-Ag-Au deposits in the Sierra Madre Belt dates to Spanish Colonial days. Access to the Bolivar Property (Figure 1) is by paved road (approximately 305 km southwest from Chihuahua) and approximately 80 km by all-season gravel roads to the villages of Cieneguita (population ~1,000) and Piedras Verdes (population ~500) adjacent to the property. [ ] The Bolivar property comprises an old Cu-Zn producer (the Bolivar Mine), exploration concessions adjacent to the Bolivar Mine, and a new camp at the mine that supports mining, exploration and maintenance. From 1980 to 2000, former operators extracted approximately 300,000 tonnes of ore that was hand sorted to an average grade of 5-6% Cu and 25-30% Zn. From 2005-2010, Dia Bras produced from the mine just over 600,000 tonnes at an average grade of 1.7% Cu and 8.6% Zn. Dia Bras transported mineralized rock 275 km by truck and rail to its Malpaso mill, located about 30 km west of Cuauhtémoc in central Chihuahua, from 2005 until October 2011 when the new Piedras Verde mill was commissioned only 5 km from the mine. To reduce fire hazards from spontaneous combustion of coal in longwall gob areas, a series of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations were conducted by National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to model the spontaneous heating of coal in longwall gob areas. The previous modeling results demonstrate that spontaneous heating of coal usually occurred behind the longwall shields and along the face with a bleeder ventilation system. Assuming a stationary longwall face, the spontaneous heating could turn to a spontaneous fire in several days for the most reactive coal under favorable conditions. When the longwall face advances, the spontaneous heating process will be significantly affected. In this study, the effect of longwall face advance on the spontaneous heating in the gob area is investigated using the CFD model developed in previous studies. One longwall panel with a bleeder ventilation system is simulated. The width of the panel is 300 m, while the length of the panel is changed between 1,000 to 2,000 m. The same permeability and porosity profiles are used for gobs with different lengths. The spontaneous heating first develops in the gob when the longwall face is stationary. Then, the face advances at a certain rate. The face advance is simulated as a series of discrete movements, and the effect of the face advance on the maximum temperature developed during the face stoppage is examined. Several years ago, Hudco Industrial Products began experimenting with the idea of levitating a conveyor belt with a film of air, much like the puck on an air-hockey table. While conducting its research, the company found out that some Russian and Dutch companies attempted the concept during the 1970s. After studying those conveyors, Hudco determined that its design was better. The Hudco advanced air-supported conveyor consists of an air-tight plenum, or chamber, that runs the length of the belt. The topside of the plenum has a formed trough. It corresponds to the profile of conventional troughing rollers. Low-pressure air is provided to the sealed plenum from a low horsepower blower. This pressurized air is metered and released through the central portion of the trough and reacts against the underside of the belt. The differential pressure between the top and bottom surfaces creates the lift to support the loaded belt. Airtight covers are installed to seal the transported materials in the plenum trough.

A novel impedance probe has been commissioned specifically for capturing fast dynamic information about filtration processes. It provides an attractive alternative to more complex measurement techniques in situations where the slurry system is primarily one-dimensional. The probe can monitor mud-line, slurry densification and drainage. Dynamic variations in cake permeability are obtained by combining dynamic mud-line information obtained with the probe and filtrate rate data derived from a leaf test apparatus. The measurements are re-viewed in relation to micro structural measurements obtained on iron ore filter cakes. The practical significance of these measurements for optimization of the filtration process is discussed.

Historical production data and reserve decline rates can be used both to predict future coal production rates and to estimate when the reserve will be depleted. Reserve estimates inferred herein from historical production data and decline rates are commonly lower than estimates made from geologic data. The latter include significant amounts of lower quality (deeper, thinner, higher sub) coal which may be mined when the better deposits are depleted.

The recently completed in-pit crushing and conveying project at Phelps Dodge's Morenci Mine is rated among the world's leading materials handling projects. The operation involves the crushing and transport of more than 109 kt/ d (120,000 stpd) of copper ore, using regenerative conveyors capable of providing more than 5.5 MW (7000 hp) of equivalent electrical energy. The Morenci Mine is located 330 km (200 miles) east of Phoenix, AZ. Phelps Dodge Corp. owns an 85% interest in the mine. The remaining 15% is owned by Sumitomo Metal Mining Co., Ltd. and Sumitomo Corp. Copper has been continuously produced from the Morenci district since the late 1800s. Until 1989, run-of-mine ore was transported from active mining faces to the Morenci and Metcalf concentrators by truck and rail haulage. In that year, a system of in-pit, semi-portable crushing plants and overland conveyors was commissioned. This substantially reduced truck haulage and effectively eliminated rail haulage in the pit. The system used two semi-portable, in-pit crushing stations equipped with 60/89 gyratory crushers. The crushed ore from both plants reported to the first of two overland belt conveyors, arranged in series, for transport from the pit to a coarse ore stockpile. The system was "backed-up" by existing locomotive rail haulage.

This paper presents the ground settlement monitoring system used during the construction of two tunnels bored by two EPB TBMs, beneath the existing and active railway embankment in Bologna (Italy). The tunnels run close to large buildings and beneath bridges and other infrastructure. Data are collected from remote total stations and from electro levels installed directly on the railway tracks. The automated monitoring system acquires and analyses data then sounds an alarm in the event that there is a problem. Alarms are sent out in case of excessive tilt or settlement. Data is provided through a dedicated web application for multiple-party access, to gather, manage and store monitoring data.

SAG mill liner development draws primarily on practical experience from SAG milling operations supported by computer-based modeling of charge motion in SAG mills and on established good design practice. Liner design needs to respond to the process aspects of mill liner action that are critical to good SAG mill performance, i.e., the impact of shell liners on the grinding action and of grates and pulp lifters on pulp discharge. In recent years, the trend in large SAG mills has been to use wide-spaced shell lifters with large lifter face angles, primarily to reduce packing and ball/liner damage, and to use larger, hence fewer, mill liner parts to reduce downtime at liner change-outs.

A stochastic approach was developed and applied to the Butte, Montana Hillside abandoned mining site for modeling stormwater runoff and subsequent receiving stream loadings. This approach enabled capture and quantification of the uncertainty associated with stormwater quality data and allowed the prediction of copper and zinc concentrations in the receiving stream caused by runoff from the Butte Hillside during storm events. Runoff flows and stormwater concentrations were input to the model as probability distribution functions. Monte Carlo simulation allowed prediction of expected instream concentrations in the form of cumulative distributions functions. The modeling results allowed evaluation of current best management practices (BMPs), targeting of future BMPs, and identification of key data gaps to fill during future sampling activities. This modeling approach is considered extendable to other active and inactive mining sites. Output from a model of this type is easily understood and can be used to communicate effective stormwater management to site regulators. Furthermore, application of this modeling approach will facilitate the development and implementation of a site-specific stormwater management plan and will optimize efforts to achieve standards for compliance with stormwater discharge permits.

The Bond grindability testing procedure has been standardized to measure the same grindability values, i.e. Bond work index (BWi), for the same ore when tests are performed in different laboratories or by different operators. This is accomplished by the standardization of mill dimensions, tumbling speed, grinding ball charge weight and distribution, sample ore charge weight in the mill and operating practice. The results of this investigation reveal that the Bond work index grindability values may differ substantially with different standard Bond ball mills. This paper will review the results.

The economic success and growth of any metropolitan region depends on mobility. Today, mobility between New Jersey and New York is threatened by a transportation system that cannot meet 21st century travel demands. The transportation bottleneck created by the Hudson River threatens the viability of one of the world?s great centers of commerce and culture. Fortunately, there is a solution: The Access to the Region?s Core Mass Transit Tunnel. The US$8.7-billion Mass Tran-sit Tunnel?s (MTT) new two-track line will double commuter rail capacity under the Hudson and create a new, state-of-the-art cavern station in Midtown Manhattan, with wide platforms, high-speed escalators and other features to improve riders? travel experience. The capacity and other benefits of the MTT project will launch a new era of prosperity for the region, just as the Pennsylvania Railroad did almost 100 years ago when it built the existing two, single-track rail tunnels that now form the sole commuter rail link between New Jersey and New York. The existing tunnels run from North Bergen, NJ, under the Hudson River to Pennsylvania Station at 33rd Street in Manhattan. Construction on the MTT, the largest public works project in the United States, is scheduled to start this year and continue through 2017. The MTT is ready to go to construction thanks to a major commitment of financial, engineering, project management and other resources from NJ TRAN-SIT, New Jersey?s statewide mass transit agency, and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, a bistate agency that operates the Holland and Lincoln tunnels, the George Washington Bridge and other major transportation facilities in New York and New Jersey. The project is also strongly supported by the state governments of New York and New Jersey, as well as that of New York City. The MTT is New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine?s number one transportation priority.

Automated temporary roof support (ATRS) systems have been incorporated into roof bolters since the 1970?s. During roof bolting, many injuries have occurred from large pieces of draw rock falling inby the ATRS beam and tipping back into the operator?s area. Other injuries have occurred due to smaller, sharp rocks falling onto the operator?s hand and arm during initiation of roof bolt drilling. These injuries are attributed to weak immediate roof, sometimes called roof skin failure. Even though ATRS systems support the roof and provide a measure of protection against roof skin failure, additional hazards sometimes do exist immediately inby and outby the supported roof. Design innovations such as the ATRS mounted rocker pad deflector systems have been designed to improve the roof bolter operator safety. This paper will inform the reader of the hazards, machine evolution through different design solutions, and the current state of the art in preventing roof skin failure injuries when roof bolting.

Heat and humidity buildup withn refuge alternatives (RAs) may expose occupants to physiological hazards such as heat stress. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) regulations require RAs in underground coal mines to provide a lifesustaining environment for miners trapped underground when escape is impossible. RAs are required to sustain life for 96 h while maintaining an apparent temperature (AT) below 95 °F (35 °C). The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) tested a 10-person tent-type RA, a 23-person tent-type RA, and a 6-person metal-type RA in its underground coal mine facilities to investigate the thermal environment over a 96-h period. The test results showed that mine air and mine strata temperatures surrounding an RA occupied by simulated miners (SMs) increased over the 96-h test period. The test results suggest that RA manufacturers should consider this increase in temperatures when calculating and evaluating RA components during surface and laboratory tests. The findings can equip stakeholders with additional considerations for calculating the interior heat and humidity temperature profiles for occupied RAs not tested in situ.

Many countries, provinces, territories and states in the European Union, Australia, Canada, the United States and elsewhere have begun implementing sustainability programs. Most of those programs, however, stop short of sustainable management of aggregate resources. Sustainable practices do not always have to be conducted under the title of sustainability. This case study describes how Lafarge implemented the principles of sustainability even though there was an absence of existing local government policies or procedures addressing sustainable resource management. Jefferson County is one of three counties in the six-county Denver, CO, region that has potentially available sources of crushed stone. Crushed stone comprises 30percent of the aggregate produced in the area. And it plays a major role in regional aggregate resource needs. Jefferson County is home to four of the five crushed stone operations in the Denver region. Lafarge operates one of those four quarries.

In fluctuating airflow, continuous air velocity recording is the most reliable method of air velocity measurement. It allows for fast recognition of changes and the calculation of long-term averages. Also, it enables the mine operator to identify when the airflow has decreased to a point requiring action. Using ultrasonic anemometers provides an accurate option for continuous air velocity monitoring. This paper provides information about the effect of common obstructions in underground mining on air velocity readings. Stationary and moving obstructions are used to represent workers and equipment that would cause discrepancies in measured airflow. Also, it is important to know how large of a sample size is required to ensure reasonable accuracy of results. Statistical analysis is used to evaluate the required sample size. The sampling procedure is further studied by comparing two different sample rates. The results show that obstructions provide noticeable differences in air velocity measurements. Also, movement of obstructions can be recognized from changes in results. Surprisingly small sample sizes provide reliable air velocity information. Standard sample rates are found to be suitable for the underground environment.

Nile sediment was collected as a waste from one of the water treatment plants in Cairo, and subjected to petrographical investigation and granulometric, chemical, and mineralogical analyses. It was expected to find diatomite in that sediment but it was a surprise to find that the diatomite content amounted to about 52.01% by volume in addition to quartz, orthoclase and clay minerals. The latter are represented by montmorillonite and illite minerals. The sediment is light gray in color, soft and has low density and high surface area, such density and surface area generally decrease with temperature. The sediment absorbs 317% of its weight in water. The diatomite skeletons are the main factor responsible for its high porosity producing microporosity and low density, and these particles are concentrated in the very fine silt size fraction (11x2µm). The common diatoms in such sediment include Cyclotella ocellata Pant, and Melosira granulata (Ehr.) Ralfs. It seems that this Nile diatomaceous sediment has many advantages over the fossil diatomite, such as Fayium diatomite in Egypt, with the absence of carbonate minerals that require grinding and calcination those cause destruction of the cellular structure and energy consumption. This Nile diatomaceous sediment can be processed using sequential classification to obtain diatomite concentrate of 88.8% grade at 90.6% recovery, and a middling product of 19.4% grade and 5.8% recovery. The suggested flow sheet is quite simple to produce diatomite product for different industries at a low cost. The unusual particulate structure and chemical inertness make diatomite an ideal mineral to be used as functional filler in a wide range of industries, and as catalyst carriers and insulating material. A test system was developed for measuring airflow in the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) ventilation gallery using a three-axis ultrasonic anemometer. The gallery was used to simulate face airflow conditions in underground mines having a blowing curtain. Airflow data collected at multiple sampling locations between the face and the end of the curtain were used to draw airflow profiles for different curtain setback distances, intake flow quantities and entry widths. In addition, methane was released at the face, measured at the sampling locations, and displayed as methane distribution in the area between the curtain and the face. Entry geometry had a significant effect on airflow patterns, and the flow patterns affected the distribution of methane in the entry. Flow measured at and parallel to the face was a good predictor of methane dilution and removal within two feet of the face.

Diesel Particulate Matter (DPM) is considered carcinogenic after prolonged exposure. With increasing use of diesel-powered mining equipment in underground mines, miner?s exposure to DPM has been increasing. Most studies on the issue has been DPM control measures with few studies on diesel exhaust propagation patterns after leaving the tailpipes. This study uses computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to investigate the airflow pattern in an underground metal/nonmetal mine for a single heading. Several high DPM concentration areas are identified in the study and common practices for compliance are suggested. Airflow and DPM distribution are compared between blowing and exhausting face ventilation systems. Suggestions are also provided for the protection of miners in the face area.
