"In this investigation, a sponge gold sample (99.92% pure) has been leached with ammonium thiosulfate solution. The effects of CuSO4, (NH4)2S2O3, (NH4)2SO4, NH4OH and retention time on the gold leaching % (extraction %) and thiosulfate oxidation % (consumption %) have been studied. The copper ion acts as a catalyst in gold dissolution. On the other hand, it also accelerates oxidation of thiosulfate (consumption). It was found in this study that the best gold extraction condition was obtained at 43.2 ks with 0.8 - 1.0x103 mol/m3 (NH4)2S2O3, 30 mol/m3 CuSO4, 2.0 - 3.0x103 mol/m3 NH4OH, 0.4 - 0.5x103 mol/m3 (NH4)2SO4, pH 10±0.2 and 150 rpm. The thiosulfate oxidation was about 15% of the initial concentration.For gold recovery from the pregnant solution, the trioctylmethyl ammonium chloride (TOMAC) was used in this investigation as an extractant to extract gold from thiosulfate solution without pH and other adjustments. The effects of gold concentration, pH, ammonia, thiosulfate and cupric ionic concentrations, extractant and diluent concentrations and retention time on the gold recovery were investigated. It was found that 180 mol/m3 extractant diluted with n-octant at O/A ratio of 1:1 could extracted the 100% of gold in 0.6 ks from the thiosulfate solution at the optimal leaching conditions. The 100% gold stripping could be achieved with 10% thiourea solution."

"Karagedik Chromite Concentrator of the ETI Holding Co., which is located in Fethiye (south Turkey), has been producing chromite concentrate assaying 47-48 % Cr2O3 from the chromite ores containing 30-35 % Cr2O3 by using gravity separation methods since 1920. The tailings having 13-14 % Cr2O3, which had been removed from this plant, were accumulated at the stockpiles amounting about 1.2 million tons. In order to recover the ultra fine chromite particles from the Karagedik Concentrator tailings, the new process including Wet High Intensity Magnetic Separation and column flotation, was developed and the Karagedik Research Pilot Plant based on this process was commissioned in 2000. At this plant, the final concentrates assaying 46-48% Cr2O3 were produced and overall plant recoveries are about 60-65%.At the chromite concentrators using gravity separation methods, if their material size is about minus 1.0 mm, chromite particles especially pass to fine fractions according to their mineralogical structures and the ore-genesis (Önal and Güney, 1990). Generally, after crushing and grinding, the shaking tables and spirals are used at the chromite concentrators; therefore fine size chromite particles (-0.038 mm) are removed as tailings. Cr2O3 content of the -0.1 mm size fraction with 52.3% of the total amount is 19.58 % with Cr2O3 distribution of 82.6%.In order to upgrade the minus 0.1 mm size fraction of the tailings, assaying about 20% Cr2O3, Karagedik Research Pilot Plant (KRPP), which includes Wet High Intensity Magnetic Separator (WHIMS) and Column Flotation units, was installed by Istanbul Technical University (ITU), Mineral Processing Section in 2000.Feeding material of the KRPP having 5 tons per hour capacity is obtained from stockpiles amounting 1.2 million tons. After attrition scrubbing, the feed is sent to a screen with aperture of 1.0 mm. The screen overflow, assaying 5-6 % Cr2O3 is removed as tailings. Screen underflow is classified to –1.0+0.1 mm and minus 0.1 mm size fractions by using cyclone and sieve bend. –1.0+0.1 mm size fraction assaying 6-7 % Cr2O3, is sent to existing gravity separation plant. Minus 0.1 mm size fraction is firstly fed to WHIMS for pre-concentration and non-magnetic product assaying 10-11 % Cr2O3 consisting of serpentine, talc and olivine minerals are separated as tailings. Also magnetic product (25-30 % Cr2O3) obtained from WHIMS is fed to the two stages conditioners after dewatered to 30 % solid ratio."

"This work presents the results of the development of a flowchart for the processing of copper production dusts resulting in the production of of lead sulphate, tribasic lead sulfate (TBLS), ammonium perrhenate, zinc, copper-cadmium cake.Dust having the following composition (wt. %): Pb 39.3, Zn 6.5, Cu 5.5, Stotal 10.8, As 1.05, SiO2 0.6, Cd 0.8, Bi 0.04, Ag 0.02, Re 0.03 was used in the work. Chemical and X-ray analyses indicated that lead, zinc and copper are generally present in dusts in the form of sulfates, various amounts of oxides, sulfides, silicates; sulfur (according to chemical analysis data) is present in the form of sulfates (~ 90%) and in the form of sulfides (~ 10%).Studies have been made on two-stage stripping of copper production dusts containing lead, zinc, copper, cadmium, rhenium in the form of various compounds, at first with soda solution, then with nitric acid solution. It has been indicated that the combination of the operations allows the recovery of 98% rhenium, 82% lead, 92% copper, and 96% zinc and cadmium each in the solution. Furthermore, at the stage of dust leaching with soda, 80% of rhenium and 0.01% of nonferrous metals each are recovered in the solution. Remaining quantities of all metals are recovered in nitric acid solution up to maximum values. Such behaviour of metals is caused by metal phase content in dusts and properties being formed during leaching of compounds. At the stage of dust leaching with soda solutions, carbonates with various compositions are formed due to the exchange reaction between nonferrous metal sulfates and sodium carbonate. The conversion of PbSO4 into PbCO3 is apparently occurs in the solid phase and the conversion of readily watersoluble zinc, copper, and cadmium sulfates into that of carbonate salts occurs in the liquid phase. Rhenium passes into solution due to the presence of rhenium greater quantity in dust in the form of readily soluble perrhenate. Some portion of the perrhenate is, probable, blocked by lead sulfate and liberated in the conversion of PbSO4 into PbCO3."

"Coal-fired electrical power generation plants produce 56% of all the electricity in the U. S., burning approximately 860 million tons of coal annually. This results in production of 58 million tons of fly ash; 19 million tons of bottom ash and boiler slag, and 23 million tons of desulfurization sludges. These are a considerable disposal problem, and it would therefore be very valuable to be able to sell these residues and byproducts as useful materials, rather than paying to dispose of them in landfills. However, utilization rates are currently very low, below 32% even for the most thoroughly commercialized combustion byproduct (fly-ash). This poor utilization rate is a result of the high impurity content of combustion byproducts, which make them unsuitable for existing markets. The experiments described in this paper were therefore carried out to study the application of mineral processing techniques to upgrading combustion byproducts.Experiments were conducted to upgrade and purify low-grade combustion products to produce highgrade, readily saleable materials. A process was developed for removing unburned carbon from coal fly-ash by froth flotation, using reagents originally developed for flotation of oxidized coals. This technique could reduce the carbon content of fly-ashes containing up to 11.1% carbon to less than 2%. The froth product was sufficiently carbon-rich that the recovered carbon has value as fuel, or as low-grade activated charcoal.Fly ash was also examined as a binder for producing iron ore pellets, primarily as a substitute for bentonite. It was found that Class F fly ash in combination with an activator (calcium hydroxide) was an effective pellet binder at dosages comparable to the currently-used dosages of bentonite clay. While the flyash worked very well alone, tests in combination with bentonite showed that fly-ash/bentonite mixtures had significantly worse binding performance than either pure bentonite or pure fly-ash-based binder. This was determined to be due to the fact that bentonite and fly ash have profoundly different binding mechanisms, with fly-ash undergoing a pozzolanic chemical reaction while bentonite binds through a physical attachment process."

Magnesium borates of varying compositions and properties are synthesized using different reagents and methods for the possible potential uses as termoluminescent material, anti-wear and anti-friction additive, fire retardant, catalyst for the conversion of hydrocarbons, whisker material and ferroelastic material. In the current work, the conditions for synthesizing MgB4O7 compound by high-temperature solid-state reactions were investigated using boric acid and magnesium oxide as the starting materials. The MgO:B2O3 mole ratios applied in the experiments were 1:1, 1:2, 1:3 and the thermal behaviours of each mixture were studied between 25~1200°C by TG/DTA analyses under static air atmosphere to find out the probable formation temperature of MgB4O7 phase. Considering TG/DTA results, freshly prepared boric acid and magnesium oxide solid mixtures were heated at predeter-mined temperatures and the phases were identified by XRD analyses. Accordingly, MgO:B2O3 mole ratio of 1:2, heating temperature of 950°C and a reaction time of 2 hours were selected as the optimum conditions for the formation of maximum amounts of MgB4O7. After obtaining solids prepared at the pre-determined optimum conditions, their chemical composition, IR spectrum, TG/DTA pattern, B.E.T. surface area value, particle size distribution and SEM images were deter-mined to point out the possible use areas. Experimental results showed that it was not possible to obtain pure product at the optimum conditions due to formation of minor amounts of t-Mg2B2O5 and the presence of some unreacted B2O3. The product synthesized has the potential for use as a corrosion inhibitor on some metal surfaces.

"When mineral particles are floated in a mechanical flotation cell, it is found that the rate constant, after reaching a maximum value, starts to decline as particle size increases. It had been thought that the reduction in rate constant had been due to the increased prevalence of composite particles in natural ores, for larger particles. However, Jameson (2012) showed that the rate constant for composites is certainly a function of the surface liberation, but the reduction in flotation rate is independent of particle size. Thus all particles are equally affected by reduced surface liberation, independently of their size. He further argued that the classical peak observed in the rate constant with increasing particle size, is a function of machine hydrodynamics. Thus in mechanical cells, the peak may be due to the high energy dissipation rate and its effects on the detachment of particles from bubbles (Goel and Jameson, 2012). Consequently, in a different flotation environment, it may be possible to float large composite particles that cannot be floated in mechanical cells. This paper describes the flotation of large composite particles in a fluidized bed flotation cell. The particles to be floated are fed to a column in which there is a continuous upflow of liquid. A conventional froth layer of controlled depth is formed at the top of the vessel. A fluidized bed of particles is established which provides a gentle environment for the contacting of large particles with bubbles. An example is given where a porphyry copper ore was prepared at a top size of 710 µm, and floated with conventional collector (PAX) and frother (MIBC). The concentrate was separated into size fractions and examined by photography. Composites were observed at all size fractions, but above 400 µm, all particles were composites. The implications for future flotation circuits will be described."

The paper presents issues related to interference of mining activities with the environment. Exploitation of mineral resources causes primarily a modification of the landscape. All of the negative impacts on environment are short-lived and last as much as it takes to exploit the raw material. After the mine closure reclamation is necessary during which all aspects that reduce harmful effects of the mining activities on the environment must be taken into account. Current ways of reclamation allow recreating natural environment, which is different from the original and enriched in diverse new values. This requires propositions of new forms of converted land development through a detailed analysis of technical, natural, planning, economic and social sphere requirements. Before making final decisions regarding selection of direction of reclamation, a thorough analysis of the key factors has to be carried out. All steps related to the implementation of the reclamation project are shown in the paper using Limestone Mine "Górazdze" located in the south-western part of Poland as an example. This paper also presents an analysis of current ways of post-mining reclamation towards agricultural and forestry landscape, along with our own suggestion for their extension in order to preserve biodiversity. For choosing optimal solutions the most relevant criteria were considered: existing natural values and possibility of their protection. Taking into account the economic and social aspects, supported by natural potentials, implementation of tourism and recreation in this area were proposed. It was shown that this proposition would not interfere with the current trends of the natural landscaping. Finally, after completion of reclamation and land development in the considered mine area, creation of a geo-park was proposed along with appearance of geotourism in the area. To illustrate the proposed forms of post-mining land development in the form of maps, an ArcGIS(ESRI) software was used.

The adsorption behaviors of metal ions on a silicate mineral and the flotability of a metalized silicate mineral with sodium oleate as collector are closely related to the structure of the silicate mineral. The adsorption isothermals of the metal ions on different silicate minerals are studied, the parameters of the isothermal give the information how many surface oxygen anions a metal ions is attached to, from this information and the structure of the mineral the site where a metal ion is attached can be guessed (The adsorption isothermals and adsorption behaviors with pH are fitted with Temkin, Frenudlich and Kurbatov equations respectively). Metal ions as Cu2+, Ni2+, Zn2+ are attached to the oxygen anions of surface species –Si-O– on the quartz surface, most of them coordinate to only one surface oxygen, their adsorption ability on quartz is low, but this metal ions on quartz surface protrude out of the surface perfectly, so their ability to combine with oleate acid radical is excellent. Quartz can be activated well by such metal ions. The isothermal of Fe3+ on quartz indicates these cations coordinates with more than two surface oxygen anions. This means the Fe3+ nucleates on quartz surface in the form of Fe(OH)3 colloid particles. The isothermals of Cu2+, Ni2+, Zn2+ Fe3+ on spodumene shows such ions coordinate with more than two surface oxygen anions, it indicate these ions may attach to the position where Li+ is formerly exists, such metal ions stay in a cave on the mineral surface, their adsorption abilities on spodumene are quite well, but they are affect by the oxygen anions of the two Si tetrahedron chains, the can almost not activate this mineral. These cations may attach on the site where Al3+ exists on the muscovite surface, just like spodumene, muscovite can not be activated well by such cations. Pt2+ has a large ion radius, as Pauling’s rules depicts polyhedron can not attach to Si tetrahedron well, the adsorption ability of Pt2+ on quartz is low and quartz is activated badly by Pt2+. On the other Pt2+ can adsorb well on spodumene and muscovite well and activated them well because it is not affected so bad by the tetrahedron oxygen anions of the minerals for their its large radius. The isothermal of Ca2+ on quartz indicates a Ca2+ coordinates with less than one surface oxygen anion, this means Ca2+ attaches on quartz mainly by physical adsorption. The adsorption abilities on mineral surface and the interaction abilities with oleate acid radical of the transition metal ions with the same valence are guessed to be determined by their d electron number, the rules should be d1<d2<d3<d4>d5<d6<d7<d8<d9>d10. Hydrogen bond may play an important rule in the activation of the mineral by HF and the interaction of the HF activated silicate mineral with collectors. The general rule is high bond valence and small metal ion radius surface species –Me-O can be activated well by HF with sodium oleate as collector. For example – SiIV-OH is neutral while –SiIV-FH+ and –SiVI-FH+0.33 are positively charged, the positively charged surface species are more likely to connect oleate acid radical via hydrogen bonds.

"Nickel sulphide ores subjected to this investigation were taken from Orhaneli district where widespread chromite mineralisation can be occurred. Significant amounts of magnetite and chromite have been existed in the ore together with sulphide and oxide type nickel minerals. Ore sample is constituted about 70% magnetite, 15% sulphide minerals, 5% chromite and iron oxides as well as 10% gangue minerals.According to the chemical analysis results, the representative ore sample contains 1.32% Ni, 10.8% SiO2, 78.4% Fe2O3, 1.3 g/t Ag and 1.0 g/t Au. Mineralogical examinations showed that pentlandite (Fe, Ni)9S8, violarite (Ni, Fe)3S4, millerite NiS and asbolane (Co, Ni)MnO2.(OH)2.1-2H2O were the main nickel minerals and magnetite, chromite, chromium spinals, pyrite, pyrhotite, chalcopyrite, cubanite, goethite, hematite, limonite, rutile, chlorite, talc and serpentine group minerals as associated minerals.The aim of this investigation was to produce valuable nickel concentrates by using gravity separation, magnetic separation and flotation methods. As a results of laboratory scale studies, alternative flow sheets for the production of nickel sulphide concentrate were developed. The related experimental results are given in Table 1."

Thiosulfate leaching as an environmentally benign alternative to cyanide leaching has received particular attention in recent years. Most studies have focused on thiosulfate leaching of free milling ores and, to some extent, pregrobbing ores. In this study, leaching of gold from the refractory Kaletas ore (in which gold/silver alloy is the only mode of occurrence detected) in ammoniacal thiosulfate solutions was studied. A two-level full factorial design (23) was adopted to investigate the effects of concentration of thiosulfate (0.2-1 M Na2S2O3), ammonia (0.5-1 M NH3) and copper (0.05-0.1 M CuSO4) on the extraction of gold from a ground ore (-38 µm) over a period of 24 h. Statistical analysis confirmed the leaching of gold improved with increasing concentrations of thiosulfate and ammonia. In contrast, increasing the concentration of copper in the range tested adversely affected the extraction of gold. The magnitude of effects of parameters on the gold extraction was in the order of Na2S2O3 > NH3 > CuSO4. The maximum extraction of gold (69.6%) was obtained in the presence of 1 M Na2S2O3, 1 M NH3 and 0.05 M CuSO4. The negative influence of copper on gold extraction is most likely attributed to the decomposition of thiosulfate catalyzed by copper. Concentration of thiosulfate was also identified to be statistically the most important parameter for its consumption.

"In this work, authors will show the efficiency of computer technology and chemical programs at studying collectors for flotation of minerals of elements of platinum group (EPG). Clusters various minerals EPG (flotation reagents) are created, named us clusters minerals (reagents) as their structure corresponds to the chemical formula, and the distance between separate atoms corresponds to the known tabulated data. By molecular modeling are investigated clusters sperrylite PtAs2, stumpfilyte PtSb, sadberryte PdSb, sobolevskite PdBi, palladoarsenyte Pd2As, paolovyte Pd2Sn, rustenburgyte (Pt3Sn, Pt6Sn2) and their computer parameters (absolute rigidity, electronegativity, transfer factors of carry, charges of the atoms) are determined. Tellurides of palladium (IV, II) merenskyite PdTl2 and kotulskyte PdTe and platinum clusters are investigated: PtFe4, Pt3Fe, PtFe (Pt2Fe2), Pt2Fe (Cu) Ni. The technique of attachment of the collector (composites) to cluster atoms EPG is offered. For the first time, it is established that at linkage of flotation collectors on monodentate, bidentate and bridged to circuits with atoms clusters the minerals containing atoms As, Sb, Bi, Pb, Sn, reaction of connection with change of a degree of oxidation of these atoms and occurrence of a proton operates. It is executed virtual skirling organic compounds connections by the developed criteria from accessible libraries of a database. The principle of an estimation of interaction energy for flotation reagents with mineral clusters is offered. It is developed the prognosis of collector activity evaluation (P?AE) and his values for candidates in collectors for flotation of minerals EPG are calculated. For flotation of ores containing Pt and Pd minerals, a number of reagents, including compounds on basis P (III), for innovational technology of Pt, Pd mineral flotation are recommended. "In general, the processing of glass sand may involve comminution, washing, wet classification and attrition scrubbing. Additional processes may include magnetic separation, flotation and leaching in various combinations.Yaliköy sand dune deposit is located near to Istanbul on the European side by the Black Sea coast. The reserve of deposit is around 70 million tons. Iron content of Yaliköy sand dunes is 0.48 % Fe2O3 and not suitable for glass manufacture. The iron content of glass sand should be less than 0.15 % Fe2O3 for window glass manufacture and 0.05 % Fe2O3 for glassware. In this study, it was aimed to produce glass sand with less than 0.15 % Fe2O3 for window glass and with less than 0.05% Fe2O3 for glassware manufacture from Yaliköy sand dunes. A representative sample with a weight of 200 kg was taken from Yaliköy sand dunes deposit through opening small pits.• Mineralogical studies have shown that iron is present in three forms:• Hematite, limonite, clay and iron silicate minerals such as epidote and garnet occur in free form.• Quartz grains are coated by hematite and limonite.• Iron is also present in the cracks of quartz grains.Free iron minerals such as hematite and limonite and silicate minerals were subjected to magnetic separation and flotation for removal. Iron coatings were tried to be removed by scrubbing and leaching. Iron removal in the cracks of quartz grains was attempted by grinding and leaching.Under optimal conditions, sand concentrate with 0.38 % Fe2O3 was obtained by means of high intensity disc type magnetic separation. Grinding and scrubbing were applied to see the effect of size reduction and attrition at room temperature and 90 ºC, by using non-magnetic fraction. Sand concentrate with 0.13% Fe2O3 was obtained at 90 ºC in this test.Sand sample which was previously ground to minus 0.5 mm and scrubbed, was floated by using sulphonates as collector. After flotation tests, sand Concentrate was obtained with 0.11 % Fe2O3.The optimum iron removal was achieved by H2SO4 leaching at 90 ºC depending on acid concentration and leach duration in static, percolation and agitation leaching. Agitation leaching was done by the use of mixer at 600 rpm, 50% solids and leach duration was 15 minutes."

"A new method of processing beryllium raw materials based on interaction of beryllium mineral with ammonium fluoride was developed. Possibility of extracting ammonium tetrafluoroberyllate from bertrandite and phenakite minerals is proved. The developed technology allows replacing the outdated sulfate technology developed by Materion Corporation. INTRODUCTION Beryllium is a strategic metal, which is produced only in three countries: the USA, China and Kazakhstan. The world production of beryllium amounts to only 300 tons per year. More than 75% of the world beryllium production is manufactured from oxide beryllium ores in the USA by Materion Corporation. In Russia there is a large-scale beryllium ore deposit «Ermakovskoye» containig over 1 million ton of ore. Concentration of beryllium in ore amounts to 1,2%. Since the mineral base of ore is calcium fluoride, the sulfate technology of Materion Corporation cannot be used. After alloying and sulphuric acid leaching the fluorine-ion found in fluorite and beryllium together evolve into the aqueous phase. At the stage of Be(OH) precipitation fluoride-ion prevents complete isolation of beryllium into the phase of hydroxide, which increases the loss of beryllium. A new ammonium-fluoride method for processing high-fluoride beryllium ores has been developed at Tomsk Polytechnic University. The ammonium-fluoride method involves fusion of ammonium fluoride (NH4HF2) with a beryllium concentrate. The concentrate containing 10% of beryllium oxide and 25% of calcium fluoride is produced by flotation from the ore of Ermakovskoe deposit. The main component of the ore concentrate is fluorite CaF2, which does not react with NH4HF2. Beryllium in this concentrate is represented by two minerals: phenakite Be2(SiO4)2 and bertrandite Be4[Si2O7](OH)2. Ammonium fluoride, unlike sulfuric acid, does not react with calcium fluoride and is not consumed for decomposing the mineral base of the concentrate. Ammonium fluoride is an accessible and environmentally safe reagent, worth up to $ 1,200 per ton. The total amount of ammonium fluoride is recycled and is used for decomposing a new batch of beryllium concentrate."

A new ammonium-fluoride method for processing high-fluoride beryllium ores has been developed at Tomsk Polytechnic University. The ammonium-fluoride method involves fusion of ammonium fluoride (NH4HF2) with a beryllium concentrate. The concentrate containing 10% of beryllium oxide and 25% of calcium fluoride is produced by flotation from the ore of Ermakovskoe deposit. The main component of the ore concentrate is fluorite CaF2, which does not react with NH4HF2. Beryllium in this concentrate is represented by two minerals: phenakite Be2(SiO4)2 and bertrandite Be4[Si2O7](OH)2. Ammonium fluoride, unlike sulfuric acid, does not react with calcium fluoride and is not consumed for decomposing the mineral base of the concentrate. Ammonium fluoride is an accessible and environmentally safe reagent, worth up to $ 1,200 per ton. The total amount of ammonium fluoride is recycled and is used for decomposing a new batch of beryllium concentrate."

"The results of CFD modelling of complex heat transfer and fluid flow in DC electric arc furnace are presented. The model includes energy and momentum conservation equations for gas phase (freeboard), liquid phase (molten bath) and solid phase (walls and graphite electrode). Simulation revealed the temperature distribution in all elements of the furnace. The influence of the arc and melt resistance on the temperature distribution is discussed.Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) becomes a powerful tool for better understanding of the heta and mass transfer processes in industrial equipment. In current work commercial CFD software STAR-CD was used to analyse complex heat transfer in DC EAF, including forced and natural convection, conduction and radiation. The finite volume solver using body-fitted grid was used. The grids are non-staggered hexahedral grids and all variables are evaluated at cell centers. Steady-state calculations were performed with PISO algorithm. For the convective terms in equations the hybrid differencing scheme was used. An upwind differencing scheme was used for other terms. Conjugative heat transfer was taken into account in heat transfer calculations on gas-liquid and gas-solid interfaces. Radiation from the arc and inner surfaces of the furnace was calculated by a “discrete beam” approach. Source term in energy conservation equation was used to represent heat release in the zone occupied by the DC electric arc. The volume of this zone was calculated from semi-empirical equations. The Joule heat and heat due to chemical reaction in the melt were calculated through the source term expression in the energy balance equations for the slag and metal in the molten bath. The gas acceleration in the electric arc zone and stirring of the slag due to gas bubbles motion were accounted for by momentum source terms in the momentum conservation equations.All simulations were carried out using axisymmetric two-dimensional grid. The grid resolution was 20 cm per cell in most part of the furnace, except the arc region, where resolution was 5 mm per cell."

"In order to develop a common mathematical and simulation platform for tumbling mills, a review of existing mechanistic models was made identifying the key aspects of grinding and slurry transport which are common to all tumbling mills. A mill model structure has been developed for all types of tumbling mills based on the population balance framework by incorporating breakage characteristics, slurry and solids transport, product classification and discharge, and energy consumption. A size-dependant breakage model developed by the JKMRC is applied. Transport is separated from breakage events and treated as a main sub-model in the new model structure. The model structure is based on dynamic time-stepping technique to enable dynamic simulation capability for non-steady-state simulation and control modelling. It is envisaged that the new model will cover a full range of milling conditions. It should enable a smooth transition between different mill types, such as from AG (Autogenous Grinding) to SAG to ball mill. The dynamic mill model structure developed here is the first step towards mechanistic modelling of grinding mills and provides great potential for the optimization of the comminution process."

"In the article carrying out technique of experiments for estimation of power efficiency of process of crushing in cone crushers «in a layer». The conformity of the granulometric characteristics of the crushed products obtained as a result of the tests, the theoretical equations for the size characteristics, and the choice of the optimal equation for the prediction of the granulometric characteristics of the final products obtained by crushing ""in a layer"". Optimization of granulometric composition of power of crushers working ""in a layer"" is carried out with the purpose of reduction of the electric power consumption at reception of a product of required quality. As a result of the experiments, dependencies are obtained, the relevance and applicability of the crushing process ""in the layer"" for obtaining crushed stone of improved quality is proved. INTRODUCTION A number of equations have been proposed for calculating the breakage energy. These include equations by Kirpichev and Kick, Rittinger and Bond (Bogdanov, Olevsky, 1982). Another equation for calculating the specific breakage work in breakage by impact and in stratum was proposed by Devyatkin (Boiko, 2003). In these equations, the breakage energy is proportional to the particle size raised to some power. In the equation proposed by Devyatkin, the ore piece thickness or the feed average diameter is used. The relationship between energy and breakage can be expressed as an equation (Lynch, 1981; Tikhonov, no. 3, 2008) where k is a coefficient characterizing the energy parameter depending on the strength of the feed, l is size in microns. The Rittinger formula is obtained for n = 2, the Kirpichev-Kick formula for n = 1, the Bond formula for n = 1.5. For n = 3 or higher, the equation describes fine and ultrafine grinding. R. Hookey proposed a formula (Lynch, 1981, Tikhonov, no. 3, 2008), where the size exponent n is substituted by a size function In all of the above equations, a single value of the feed and product size is used; for example, in the Bond equation, size is defined as the particle size of the 20% oversize (P80 and F80). However, a single size value can represent multiple distributions, making that the Bond method inappropriate for determining the size (Lynch, 1981). Describing an equation for estimating the grinding energy will allow to design the electric drive and ore preparation circuit for the given breakage method."

In this study, the authors investigated the capability of an acidic thiourea solution and silicon-organic polymers (PSTM-3c, PSTM-3T) as ion-exchange resins to recover of gold from gold-bearing ore concentrates. Firstly, elemental gold present in flotation concentrates was dissolved by leaching with a solution of nitric acid and thiourea under the optimized conditions. The best result on gold thiourea leaching was obtained under a nitric acid concentration of 2 N, thiourea concentration of 2 %, and oxidant (Fe2(SO4)3) concentration of 3 %, solid:liquid ratio (S:L) of 1:20, leaching time of 6 hours at 20 °C with a gold recovery of 93.7 % for a gold flotation (unroasted) concentrate. For the roasted gold concentrate, the dissolution of gold was 94.8% under the optimized leaching condition as nitric acid concentration of 0.5 N, thiourea concentration of 2 %, and the oxidant concentration of 1 %, S:L ratio of 1:10, leaching time of 4 hours at 50 °C. Secondly, a series of sorption tests was carried out on a pregnant leach solution containing gold complex Au[S=C(NH2)2]2+ using silicon-organic polymers (PSTM-3c and PSTM-3T), respectively. The effects of solution pH, adsorption time and temperature in the sorption process are also studied. As the results, the PSTM-3c and PSTM-3T polymers were adsorbed about 94.4 % and 95.1 % gold from the pregnant leach solutions under the optimum sorption conditions, respectively. It was found that the both PSTM-3c and PSTM-3T polymers were effective for the recovery of gold from the pregnant leach solution of thiourea. Adsorption activity of the PSTM-3c and PSTM-3T polymers was confirmed by new peaks near 1700 cm-1 in the FT-IR spectrum of the gold-adsorbed polymers, respectively.

Electrowinning of lead from aqueous solution of PbCl2 and electrowinning of manganese dioxide from aqueous solution of MnCl2 are two research focuses in hydrometallurgy. This paper investigated a new process of simultaneous electrowinning of lead and manganese dioxide in chloride medium. The simultaneous electrowinning process in chloride solution not only can prevent chloride from liberating at anodes but also obtain two electrolysis products and decrease electric energy consumption. Diaphragm cell is used in the simultaneous electrowinning process to form separate anode and cathode compartment. The effects of temperature, HCl concentration in anolyte, NaCl concentration in catholyte and electrolysis time on current efficiency and cell voltage are studied. The results indicate that current efficiency of anode and cathode for 5 hours is 99% and 96% respectively, average cell voltage is 1. 701V, the weight ratio of lead and manganese dioxide produced at electrodes is 2. 39:1 under the optimum conditions. As anode products, manganese dioxide is ??MnO2, content of which in the products is more than 92%.

"After the milling and flotation of the platinum bearing ore, the flotation concentrate is electrically smelted in 6-in-line electric arc furnaces and the resulting furnace matte treated in Peirce Smith converters to remove the iron sulphide. The iron free (less than 1% Fe) converter matte is then granulated and sent to the Base Metals- and Precious Metals Refineries for further processing.During the smelting and converting processes two distinct gas streams are produced.The Peirce Smith converter off gas contains 4% - 9% SO2 which is treated in a conventional Sulphuric Acid Plant to produce sulphuric acid (H2SO4).The electric furnace off gas contains 0.9% SO2 and was (until September 2002) vented through a 91 meter high stack to atmosphere.Off gasses which contain less than 3% SO2 is difficult to handle and quite a few processes had been developed over the years to cope with this gas. A broad spectrum of process suppliers and technology approaches is available and the different technologies can be divided into a few main approaches i.e.Scrubbing of the off gas with an alkaline solution to produce an environmentally friendly and stable waste product which can be discharged onto a tailings dam or permanent landfill site.Physical absorption of the SO2 into a chemical solution to produce high quality chemically pure process chemicals.Catalytic reaction of SO2 with O2 to produce SO3 which is absorbed in water to produce sulphuric acid of less than 90% strength.In October 2002 Impala Platinum commissioned a Sulfacid Plant at its Smelter in Rustenburg which recovers the SO2 from the electric furnace off gasses into a weak sulphuric acid solution.The Sulfacid Plant technology is widely used in the paint pigment industry. This is, however, the first application of the technology on electric furnace off gas.The furnace off gasses contains flue dust which is removed in electrostatic precipitators. The gas exiting the precipitators normally still contains between 40 mg/Nm3 and 60 mg/Nm3 dust and passes through a quench-scrubber before entering the reactors. The quench-scrubber cools the electric furnace offgas down from ± 200 °C to 60 °C and act as a final dust removal stage."
