This paper documents a field survey using long-range terrestrial digital photogrammetry at the Palabora open-pit mine, South Africa, for multi-scale characterization of rock mass discontinuities. Stereomodels covering the entire mine were generated based on photographs taken from a distance of 1600m across the pit, using a series of f=20-400mm lenses. Details on the methodology used and its accuracy are discussed. Preliminary results on discontinuity orientation, persistence and intensity are presented, highlighting the effect of observation scale. The potential uses of long-range terrestrial digital photogrammetry in open-pit mine and large natural rock slope environments is emphasized. The use of an f=400mm lens from distances larger than 1.5km may represent an important step forward in the geotechnical characterization of inaccessible remote rock faces.

Considerable effort is currently directed towards the development of potential non-explosive mining methods with the potential to allow continuous mining in narrow reef conditions. Besides improving productivity, continuous mining results in concentrated mining which has a significant impact on reducing infrastructural costs. Impact Ripping and Water Pulse Rock Breaking have been tried on gold mines, whereas Activation, Mini-Disc? cutting and the Plasma Holemaker are currently being tested on platinum mines. The organisation?s many years of experience in novel rockbreaking, together with its world-wide collaborator network, has placed it in a unique position to assist the mining industry and manufacturers in developing and/or adapting existing technologies for application underground. Currently a range of technologies are being investigated, which have reached different stages of maturity. Substantial efforts to develop application software based on years of research on process modelling are being pursued in many countries ( 1 .2,3,4.5). The late BO's should see a flurry of success stones about significant leaps of productivity achieved in several plants through systematic process evaluation and computer simulation studies.In Canada. the SPOC project (Simulated Processrng of Ore and Coal) was initiated at CAN MET in 1980 with the obJective of developing and transferrrng to the mineral rndustry a computer-based methodology for process evaluation and optimization. The proiect deliverables include:- an engineering manual covering most aspects of off-line computer simulation:- a bank of FORTRAN software accessible through data communication lines for user familiarization and distributed at a nominal cost in source form by CANMETThe yearly progress reports of the project contain detailed information on the project elements since 1980 16). The context of SPOC can be summed up by quoting Gordon Agar""s 1975 statement during a workshop on research needs in the mineral industry: ""What is needed is a joint effort between the academic community and one or more enliglitened industrial concerns. The effort will have to be an iterative one with data collection followed by testing the model modification of the model (s), more testing prediction, modification. data collection and so on (7). A few parallel in1- t1atives had been reported in papers or research contract reports (8, 9) but there was an obvious need for CANMET to bridge the gap between the R&D and the production sectors by undertaking a project that would document past applications and induce a new generation of initiatives through the consol1dat1on and transfer of suitable manuals and software. The effort took shape as the CANMET SPOC pro1ect in which methodology transfer was to play a key role (10)."

"The control of the operation of semi autogeneous grinding (SAG) mills is mainly achieved through adjustments of feed rate, water addition and speed of rotation. With the introduction of image based sensors it is possible to have on-line measurements of the size distribution of the ore feeding a SAG mill. This information could be used for the development of a control strategy to regulate a SAG mill feed size distribution to a set-point. The control of the size distribution is carried out by adjustment of the speed of the ore extractors underneath the ore stockpile. The potential and difficulty associated with the implementation of such control are assessed using a multivariable statistical analysis of data collected from the operation of the grinding circuit of the Agnico-Eagle Goldex mine in Val d’Or, QC. A control strategy for the ore feed size distribution is assessed using a simulator of the ore stockpile operation.INTRODUCTIONThe popularity of autogeneous (FAG) and semi autogeneous (SAG) grinding mills has been increasing over the last 20 years (Napier Munn et al., 1996). These mills use the ore or a combination of ore and steel balls as the grinding media. Since the ore is used as a media for the size reduction the mill ore feed size distribution impacts the performance of the mill. Several papers were recently published on this subject (Dance et al.,2011; Wennen & Murr, 2011; Dance & Valery, 2011; Allaire et al., 2011) showing the advantages of preparing the feed size distribution to maximize the circuit throughput or mill efficiency (Wennen & Murr, 2011; Dance & Valery, 2011; Allaire et al., 2011). With the availability of particle size sensor based on image analysis of the ore on a conveyor (Partanen et al., 2001; Bobo et al. 2004; Edwards et al., 2002; Wei & Craig, 2009) it is possible to control the size distribution of the ore feeding autogeneous or semi autogeneous mills (Partanen et al., 2001).This paper describes a method to control a size distribution index to a set point via the manipulation of the speed of the extractors that withdraw the ore from the stockpile feeding the grinding circuit. The paper consists of 4 sections. The first section describes the considered grinding circuit. A statistical analysis of the collected data on the grinding circuit is presented in the second section. This analysis demonstrates the necessity of using real-time adaptation mechanisms to develop a control strategy for the size distribution of a grinding circuit. The third section describes the method used to simulate the ore stockpile operation and the last section describes the preliminary development and assessment of a control strategy of size distribution of the ore feeding a SAG mill."

"The Kudremukh Iron Ore Company Limited, a government of India enterprise, has constructed iron ore mining, crushing, handling and concentrator facilities at Kudremukh, in southwest India. Concentrate produced is pumped 65 km to dewatering, storage and ship-loading facilities which were built at the same time at the sea port of Mangalore.A computer-based distributed process control system was implemented for all operations at Kudremukh and to interface with and monitor the Mangalore plant.The control system is examined from various standpoints, beginning with a description of its architecture, method of process input/output connection, and major hardware items.Software considerations and process applications are then looked at, with a review of the integration of the computer vendor's system software with user-developed applications programming. A control example of crusher operations is provided.Following the descriptive segment is a discussion of the design considerations and decision factors involved in the implementation of such a system considering the type of process and the remote nature of the installation site. It ends with a review of actual operating experience and conclusions regarding both this system and future similar applications.ScopeThe following is a discussion of the computer-based process control system applied for the Kudremukh Iron are Company Limited's ore handling, concentrating and shipping facilities located in South India.A general description of the process and plant equipment will be followed by an examination of the control system from the points of view of hardware and signal flow, software requirements, design considerations, implementation logistics and operating experience. The complexity of the reduction process combined with the fact that under different experimental conditions the controlling stage for the reaction may not necessarily be the same, has led experimenters in this field to a wide diversity of opinion regarding the reaction mecl1anism. As a rule, each investigation has been restricted to the study of one or two variables over a comparative]~• narrow range of experimental conditions, and consequently, it be-comes necessary to examine the significance of each published work in the light of the results of other experimenters in the field.

"Gold recovery gains in the order of one to two percent have been realized in 2009 due to changes in the operation of the grinding circuits at Barrick Gold Corporation’s Hemlo - Williams Mill. The initiative known as “split milling” involves milling low grade open pit ore in one grinding circuit and higher grade underground ore in the other grinding circuit under different conditions.The philosophy of split milling involves processing higher grade underground ore at a lower throughput rate and a finer grind while milling lower grade open pit ore at a higher throughput rate and a coarser grind. Bench scale tests showed that the recovery relationship for underground ore sources was much more grind sensitive than that of open pit ore. This relationship proved to hold in the plant. The gold recovery gain due to finer grinding of the higher grade ore is much greater than the recovery loss due to coarser grinding on the lower grade ore. Since the majority of gold is being recovered at a higher rate, this results in higher overall plant gold recovery when compared to the traditional operation philosophy of blending the ore sources.The challenges for achieving the maximum benefits of split milling were two fold; the need to increase throughput on the open pit ore milling circuit and a means of grinding finer on the underground circuit. The former was met with an increase in SAG (Semi-Autogenous Grinding) mill ball charge, a basic “drill to mill” blasting campaign and changes to the primary gyratory crusher. The latter was met with a reduced SAG mill ball charge and a higher milling density. The resulting benefits in additional gold recovered are in the order of $3-5 million per annum.INTRODUCTIONThe Williams Mill processes ore from three different ore sources, the David Bell Mine (DB), the Williams Underground Mine (WUG) and the Williams Open Pit (OP). All three ore sources are located within the Hemlo camp in Northwestern Ontario adjacent to the Trans-Canada Highway. The Williams Mill was built in the mid 1980’s at which time it was designed to process 3,000 dry metric tonnes per day through a 22’ SAG mill in series with a 16’ ball mill. In 1988 a Mill expansion doubled the mill capacity by adding a second identical grinding circuit. A photo of the current grinding circuit can be seen in Figure 1. Today the Williams Mill processes an average of 8,000 tonnes per day of which approximately 60% is from the Williams Open Pit."

The hydration kinetics of MgO, namely magnesia or magnesium oxide, obtained by calcination of magnesite MgCO3 or synthetic MgCO3·3H2O has been studied. Nesquehonite (MgCO3·3H2O) was prepared by the reaction of MgCl2 with Na2CO3 in a mixed-suspension mixed-product removal (MSMPR) crystallizer at 40 °C. Three magnesium oxide samples were obtained by calcination of magnesite MgCO3 or synthetic MgCO3·3H2O in muffle furnace at 900, 1100 and 1300 °C for 3 h, respectively. The hydration experiments of MgO samples were investigated at 25, 35 and 45 °C for 24 h in a stirred batch reactor. The hydration results indicate that the rate and extent of hydration of magnesia decreased remarkably with hydration temperature and increased with decreasing calcination temperature at a constant hydration temperature. The whole hydration reaction of magnesia was supposed to experience the promotive period and declining period. An empirical kinetic model ( k t p -?ln(1-??) ??) and a modification of the classical shrinking core model for diffusion control ( k t b d -?-?3 2 ????1 [1 (1 ??) ] ) have been applied to fit the experimental data of hydration in two stages, respectively. The values of kinetic parameters ( p k and d k ) were obtained by regression analysis and the activation energy of the sample at 900 °C was estimated to be 34.23 kJ/mol. The comparison between MgO from calcination of synthetic MgCO3·3H2O and a commercial MgO used in silicon steel production was carried out, indicating that special silicon steel grade MgO can be obtained by calcination of MgCO3·3H2O below 900 °C.

Successful design, operation and completion of a surface waste management facility for a diamond mine located in Canada?s northern environment requires careful planning to minimize short and long term environmental impacts. As part of the mine development application process, best practice standards were applied using conventional engineering to reduce the environmental effects of the mine waste facility at the Snap Lake Diamond Project. This paper presents the design criteria, site conditions, material characteristics and engineering management objectives considered for optimization of the development plan. Insight into the engineering analyses, development alternatives, monitoring program and reclamation strategy plan to be undertaken during mine operations to provide opportunity for adaptive management and to minimize environmental impacts is provided.

"Over the past twenty years there has been an increased emphasis on fine grinding in the minerals industry. This spurred the development of a range of new fine grinding equipment in the 1990s. At that time, the Knelson-Deswik mill was developed in South Africa for the pigments industry.Knelson Milling Solutions currently offers a wide range of laboratory, pilot and production scale mills. These mills bridge the gap between traditional low speed vertical mills and the high speed horizontal mills (tip speed < 3 and > 15 m/s respectively). They are designed to run at tip speeds between 10 and 12 m/s and are capable of operating with very dense grinding media. The result is a power intensity that is higher than the low speed mills and overlaps that of the high speed mills. This allows the mill to be customized for a wide range of grinding applications.A case study at Aquarius Platinum’s Kroondal Mine shows that the Knelson-Deswik technology can produce a consistent product size despite feed variations. It also shows that the throughput was proportional to the slurry density at Kroondal. The case study identified increasing the slurry density as a process change that can increase throughput and reduce the specific energy consumption.INTRODUCTIONThe increasing complexity and finer grain sizes of modern ore bodies have increased the importance of effective mineral liberation in obtaining acceptable grades and recoveries (Jankovic, Valery and La Rosa, 2003; Lichter and Davey, 2006; Napier-Munn, Morell, Morrison and Kojovic, 1996). This trend has increased the significance of fine grinding technology because the input energy increases exponentially as the required product size decreases from 100 to 10 microns (Gao and Weller, 1993a).The US Department of Energy recently provided the context for the potential energy savings in the US Mining Industry (BCS, 2007). They reported that grinding consumes approximately 494 TBtu/year. This was over double the consumption of the second highest equipment category, diesel materials handling systems (211 TBtu/yr). The proportion of grinding energy allocated to fine grinding can only be expected to increase as finer ore deposits are mined. It is therefore critical that fine grinding efficiency continue to improve through the selection of appropriate equipment and the development of best practices for existing applications."

"The deposition of tailings under water is considered to be one of the most environmentally promising and potentially cost effective methods to reduce or eliminate acid mine drainage from tailings. One of the concerns of subaqueous deposition has been that metals may leach into the cover waters, thereby increasing aqueous metal concentrations to higher than acceptable limits. This potential was seen to have an even greater possibility for impact when the tailings are deposited under acidic lake water.The following paper summarizes the results of subaqueous tailings pilot column test work conducted to determine the effects of subaqueously deposited tailings on lake water and tailings pore water. Two types of tailings were tested: high sulphide tailings (pyrrhotite concentrate), and low sulphide tailings (end of pipe slime tailings).Data was collected from five columns over a 13 month test period. The results indicated that a stagnant I 000 mm water cover was capable of maintaining the underlying tailings in a reducing condition. The upwards diffusion of pore water resulted in a pH increase in the waters overlying the thickened pyrrhotite tailings and the pyrrhotite tailings with a shallow cover of substrate. A conductivity gradient between the tailings and the water cover caused a diffusion of salts upwards into the overlying water column. Precipitation noted at the tailings water interface may be related to the precipitation of ferric oxyhydroxides, which resulted in a decrease in Fe concentrations noted in the water cover. Other metal concentrations did not exhibit significant increases in the water cover. A sulphate concentration gradient between the tailings and the water cover may have caused the diffusion of SQ4 from the tailings into the water cover."

L &apos;objectif principal de SIDBEC-NORMINES est de produire six millions de tonnes de boulettes d&apos;oxyde de fer par année, dont trois millions auront une faible teneur en silice afin de répondre aux exigences de la réduction directe. Les installations de SIDBEC-NORMINES sont adjacentes aux installations portuaires de la Compagnie Minière Québec Cartier, à l&apos;est de la ville de Port-Cartier. L &apos;ensemble est conçu pour produire les deux types de boulettes avec deux circuits d&apos;agglomération installes en parallèle. La production de concentré enrichi (68% Fe et plus) est obtenue dans une usine d&apos;enrichissement utilisant le precédé de séparation magnétique hum ide ahaute intensite (separateurs Jones). "The base metal mine at Buchans, Newfoundland, has been producing since 1928. For many years, mill tailings were disposed of by dumping into a nearby natural watercourse via which they were transported to Red Indian Lake and deposited. In 1965, environmental concerns prompted the establishment of settling ponds near the mine site. Effluents fed to these ponds included slimes washed from mine backfill sand and waste water pumped from underground as well as mill tailings. Dusting around the perimeter of the ponds was first observed around 1970and within a couple ofyears reached serious proportions. A program to alleviate the condition by developing a vegetative cover over the tailings was commenced in 1974. The work was successfully carried out and demonstrated that the large area of waste could sustain a permanent cover of grasses.This paper outlines the experimental work done at Buchans as well as the procedures followed and the problems encountered in carrying out full-scale revegetation."

"The Detour Lake gold deposit is located within the northwestern limit of the Archean Abitibi Subprovince of the Superior Province. Mineralized zones are hosted by a sequence of pillowed and massive flows, hyaloclastite units, and altered ultramafic rocks, and are commonly oriented parallel to a series of high-strain zones that are co-planar to the regional-scale Sunday Lake Deformation Zone. Early in its kinematic history, the Sunday Lake Deformation Zone placed older (2.72 Ga) volcanic rocks of the Detour Lake Formation over younger (2.70 Ga) sedimentary rocks of the Caopatina assemblage. Gold mineralization is also parallel to the position of a laterally persistent siliceous rock unit, the 2.725 Ga ‘Chert Marker Horizon.’ The Chert Marker Horizon coincides with the boundary between the mafic-dominated upper Detour Lake Formation and the ultramafic-dominated lower Detour Lake Formation. Stratigraphic and geochronological data suggest that the Chert Marker Horizon is a deformed felsic volcaniclastic unit. At a cut-off of 0.6 g/t Au, the Detour Lake deposit contains 17.26 million ounces of Au within 445.9 million tonnes of rock grading 1.20 g/t Au. Gold occurs in shear-hosted and extensional vein arrays within rocks of the upper and lower Detour Lake Formation and within the Chert Marker Horizon. The Detour Lake deposit has many of the characteristics of a greenstone-hosted, quartz-carbonate vein deposit; its very large size may be attributed to large-scale rheological controls resulting in the formation of dilatant sites in permissive rock units."

"Granular activated carbon is widely used in the gold mining industry for gold extraction from aurocyanide-containing slurry. The extraction process can employ carbon as part of the gold recovery operation for various circuit designs including carbon-in-pulp (CIP), carbon-in-column (CIC), and carbon-in-leach (CIL) circuits. However, various qualities of activated carbon exist and the durability of the material can change significantly from source to source. Handling this expensive reagent can pose challenges when fine carbon losses occur in the CIP, CIC, and CIL circuits. Additionally, any gold that is adsorbed to these carbon fines can also be lost by various mechanisms including carbon attrition and fracturing, inefficient coarse-fine separation, and poor carbon fines capture. With the above in mind, a series of tests were conducted to investigate standardizing simple laboratory methods for testing carbon quality. A standard procedure beyond or enhancing ASTM methods can serve as additional starting points for evaluating carbon specific to the gold industry. The investigation focused on size distribution, flatness, wet attrition resistance, surface area, gold kinetics, and gold loading. The final results provided information to generate an equation for ranking carbon samples to plant performance.IntroductionActivated carbon for use in gold extraction is amongst the most commonly found processes in modern gold-milling plants. Although gold losses are inevitable in the milling process, operators often focus on the importance of maximizing gold recovery. One focus area that is important in gold recovery is optimizing the use of activated carbon and examining potential changes to realize improved economics for carbon-in-pulp (CIP), carbon-in-column (CIC), and carbon-in-leach (CIL) processes."

ABSTRACT Northern Saskatchewan boasts some of the world’s largest known high-grade uranium deposits. The successful mining of these deposits cannot be accomplished without overcoming technical challenges, however, which include high grade of the uranium ore, specialized mining methods to deal with groundwater at high pressures, and poor ground conditions. This paper discusses the various mechanisms of inflows at three of Cameco Corporation’s sites in northern Saskatchewan. The risk of inflows is quantified in terms of unique challenges due to hydrogeological conditions, rock mass integrity, and uncertainty in geological conditions. Strategies in the case of an inflow are also briefly described.
