The engineering properties of a geologic material are greatly affected by the presence of macropores. Previous research has demonstrated that the size, location, and proximity of macropores influences both the strength and stiffness of specimens. Knowledge of the distribution of macropores in a specimen prior to testing would be useful for a number of reasons. We are developing a non-destructive method called cross-specimen acoustic tomography (CSAT) currently to determine some (or all) of the macropore characteristics for a laboratory specimen. The CSAT method uses a set of piezoelectric sensors that generate and receive high frequency acoustic waves. We measure the travel times of the acoustic waves through a specimen and then use a commercially available tomography software package to invert the data. The inverted velocity model is then used to locate the voids within the specimen. Two dimensional (cross-sectional) results from plaster specimens containing large macropores of Styrofoam show the technique is promising and worthy of further development.

"The evolution of mining methods at Brunswick Mining and Smelting shows that, in the case of a large deposit, technology must adapt itself to changing conditions. As problems are encountered, management must modify their approach if they hope to meet production quotas. This search for new and better ways started with the opening of the No. 12 orebody and is still going on today.From large-scale open stoping, the Brunswick Mining and Smelting operation went to transversal cut-and-fill, then to longitudinal cut-and-fill, which is the main mining method now employed. However, to solve certain problems experimenting with Avoca methods was initiated. Rebar grouting and prepinning have also made significant contributions toward securing relatively poor ground in the hanging wall and holding badly fractured backs in wide stoping areas. Introduction In 1952, M.J. Boylen had incorporated Brunswick Mining and Smelting Corporation Limited to develop his recently found No.6 and No. 12 orebodies near Bathurst, New Brunswick. Between 1953 and 1957, St. Joseph Lead Company was brought in to try and initiate mining . During those years, St. Joseph Lead sunk two shafts at No. 12-No. 1 to 425 feet below surface and No.2 to 982 feet. They also developed the 200 and 350 levels to sample the ore at depth and operated a 100-tpd pilot plant at the No.6 mine. However, due to low recoveries and depressed metal prices. the project was shut down in 1957.A group including M.J. Boylen. K.C. Irving. Maritime Mining Corporation and Patino Corporation reacquired the property from St. Joseph Lead Company in 1961. New financing was arranged involving La Societe Generale des Minerais, S.A . of Belgium and Engineering Consultants Limited of Saint John. New Brunswick. During the years 1962 and 1963, construction of surface and underground facilities progressed rapidly."

"Electrodeposited nanomaterials are increasingly implemented in advanced industrial applications in the aerospace, automotive, defence, electronic and energy sectors due to their outstanding physical, chemical and mechanical properties, including increased strength and wear resistance, and superb magnetic properties. As with the development of any class of new materials, the corrosion behaviour of these electrodeposits requires considerable attention. This presentation reviews major developments in the understanding of the corrosion behaviour of nanocrystalline metals, alloys and metal-matrix composites over the last 20 years, with emphasis on how their intrinsically high density of intercrystalline defects does not compromise their corrosion resistance as initially expected.INTRODUCTIONOver the past 20 years there have been considerable advances in the understanding of the corrosion behaviour of nanocrystalline metals, alloys and metal-matrix composites. In this paper, the corrosion properties of nanocrystalline nickel, cobalt, zinc, and copper and some of their alloys are reviewed with emphasis on how a reduction in grain size affects their corrosion behaviour in different environments.It is possible to synthesize nanocrystalline material with microstructural refinement down to the range of 1 to 100 nm using a large number of processing methods. There are five basic synthesis methods that can be used to classify the different techniques: vapor-phase processing, liquid-phase processing, solid-phase processing, chemical synthesis, and electrochemical synthesis. Depending on the synthesis method, different microstructures (equiaxed, textured), shapes, and forms (films, particles, bulk material) may be produced. In addition, other factors may be introduced (eg. residual porosity or amorphous phases), aside from microstructural refinement, which can contribute to the observed properties (Erb, 2010). In order to interpret and categorize the resulting microstructures, a dimensional structure modulation scheme was introduced by Siegel (1996) in which zero-dimensional nanomaterials refer to individual particles, clusters, etc. One-dimensionality results from a layered (less than 100 nm thick) structure. Two-dimensional nanomaterials are thin, layered structures containing grains (less than 100 nm) within each layer. Finally, three-dimensional nanomaterials are bulk structures with an average grain size less than 100 nm."

"HPGRs operate in a wide array of applications in mining and minerals. These range from relatively coarse crushing of copper and gold ores at one end of the spectrum to the processing of fine iron ore pellet feed and fine industrial mineral products at the other. Traditionally these circuits involve the treatment of relatively moist materials in pre-grinding circuits; using single stage HPGRs in open circuit or as a closed circuit operation with screening or partial product recycle. More recently, HPGR is increasingly deployed in dry grinding in combination with air classification. The high throughput demonstrated by larger HPGRs has stretched the application towards coarser size reduction duties for a number of new projects. At the same time, the basic principle of inter-particle crushing for generating a product with a high fines proportion gives ground to investigate applying the technology further towards finished product duties. The advantages that HPGR brings are clear. Multi Stage grinding enables energy efficient size reduction across more of the comminution circuit. Primary HPGR serves for a coarse grinding duty, whereas a secondary HPGR is geared towards generating a fine product for downstream processing or even a finished product. This publication summarizes some of the features of staged HPGR circuits and discusses some examples of operating and projected applications.INTRODUCTION In most HPGR applications, the grinding units are used as a single process stage, either in open circuit, such as for pebble crushing [Rose 2002, Westermeyer 2000, Van der Meer 2015] or in closed circuit with classification [Van der Meer 2009, 2012] or product recycling [Van der Meer 2010]. Where a higher plant capacity is required, the HPGRs are commonly installed in multiple lines in a parallel arrangement [Parker 2005, Koski 201, Vanderbeek 2006]. HPGRs can take a wide range of feed size distributions, and grind this down to a product with a high fines content. In general view, there is a limit on the size reduction range that even an HPGR can provide. Grinding down from a very coarse ore (e.g. 70-100 mm) to a very fine product (e.g. 100 microns range) is stretching the ability of a single stage HPGR circuit. Fine grinding generally requires a classification stage that returns the classifier oversize to the head of the HPGR circuit. From one point of view, it can be demonstrated that when recycling a large proportion of fines and middlings back to the HPGR feed results in an effective feed with an overrepresentation of middlings and fines, which will eventually reduce the grinding efficiency and consequently result in an increased recirculation mass flow [Van der Meer 2014]. From another point of view the large recycling mass puts a strain or even a limit on the capacity of present-day conveyor capacity."

"This paper presents the latest flotation development testwork conducted in 2015 on the ‘B Zone’ samples from the Strange Lake Alkalic Complex (SLAC). Since the discovery by Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOC), metallurgical development has been under taken by a number of mining companies targeting various value metals, including yttrium, zirconium, niobium, and rare earths.Most recent, Quest Rare Minerals Ltd. (Quest) completed a Pre-Feasibility Study (PFS) in 2013 where the flowsheet was relatively complex and led Quest to explore alternative options. In 2014, the PFS flowsheet was simplified and one of the features introduced was pre-concentration by rougher flotation. The combined rougher flotation concentrate and slimes successfully recovered >90% TREE in 60% mass thus reducing capital cost and technical risks of the downstream hydrometallurgical processes. The latest flotation development testwork focused on achieving a pre-concentrate in which >80% TREE are recovered in 20% mass. Two separate reagent schemes, based on an ester phosphate collector (Clariant 1682) and a benzoylhydroxamic acid collector (Florrea 7510), were developed. Parameters evaluated in the development testwork included desliming, secondary yttrium and zircon collectors, depressants, temperature, conditioning temperature, time, and density, pH, sodium silicate type, cleaning, and flowsheet configuration. Both developed reagent schemes achieved the targeted metallurgy.INTRODUCTIONThe Strange Lake Alkalic Complex (SLAC) was discovered after geological survey and mapping studies by Geological Survey of Canada and Newfoundland and Labrador Department of Natural Resources between 1967 and 1980. Subsequent exploratory drilling programs by Iron Ore Company (IOC) in the 1980s found that the REE and high field strength element (HFSE) mineralization were within the central region of the SLAC which was named A Zone by IOC and later renamed Main Zone by Quest Rare Minerals Ltd. (Quest). Additional exploratory drilling outside the Main Zone by IOC and later by Quest, led to the discovery of B Zone, which was recognized as the most significant deposit of rare earth elements, yttrium, and zirconium in the SLAC. The B Zone Indicated Resources are estimated at 278.13 Mt at 0.93% total rare earth oxide (TREO) and Inferred Mineral Resources are estimated at 214.35 Mt at 0.85% TREO (Oyediran et al., 2014)."

"Abstract -Many water inflows in Saskatchewan potash mines are linked to salt anomalies. Potash ore and three anomalies in the PCS Cory potash mine in the Patience Lake Member of the Prairie Evaporite Formation were studied to understand the processes involved in their formation. Another goal was to find geological indicators of the proximity of anomalies. A geological model that relates the potash to the salt anomalies has been developed.Up to five post-burial facies may be recognized . These range from carbonate-mud collapse breccias to bedded sylvinite, and probably result from post-burial leaching. ln this model, the same fluids that caused widespread recrystallization and possibly enrichment of the potash salts, started by dis­ solving huge cavities in the evaporites . The effects of the leaching were highly variable, indicated by selectively preserved delicate laminae and chevron textures, to deformed and totally dissolved salt beds . ln at least two major events, Late Devonian and Cretaceous, collapse structures may have acted as conduits for overlying formation waters to cause pervasive leaching and recrystallization of the Prairie Evaporite Formation .Geological indicators of the proximity of an anomaly may include: a change in Insoluble seam color from greenish-gray to mottled brown and greenish-gray, unusual local increases in ore grade, large patches (e.g., >200 cm2) of sylvite-poor potash crosscutting units near the top of the ore zone, and drops in topography >10 m of the marker seams. Anhydrite was more common in an anomaly than in ore. The local abundance of anhydrite in ore may indicate the proximity of some salt anomalies.Once an anomaly has been encountered, indicators of a major collapse feature may include: stretched clay seams, folded beds, small collapse features (1 m to 20 m), numerous washouts, or split clay seams with injected salt. Any number, or none, of these indicators may be found close to a major collapse feature."

THE Hamilton Works of The Steel Company of Canada is a fully integrated steel plant with an annual capacity of three million tons. Located on the south shore of -Hamilton bay, it is in the centre of Hamilton's industrial belt. The heavy concentration of industrial activities found in this area, accompanied metallurgical well-known sources of pollution which are normal to urban areas is creating a pollution problem which concerns both industry and the general public. The Steel Company of Canada has recognized this problem and, accordingly, has adopted the policy of integrating suitable pollution control devices into its new installations. Much effort is also being expended to control the emissions of air contaminants from the existing equipment. At the Hamilton Works, there are two main sources of metallurgical dust emissions to the atmosphere -the Open Hearth furnaces and the Sinter Plant. MR. J. C. NICHOLSON: The author has discussed his subject in a very thorough manner. One difficulty is the tendency to regard a 'permitted' explosive as a 'safe' explosive. There is no such article as a safe explosive; any explosive is only as safe as the man who handles it. In making up the primer, the method illustrated in the paper is alright for the ordinary explosive but not so for the sheathed explosive, for the sheathing would be punctured. MR. T. L. McCALL: I fee! quite certain that there would be little, if any, trouble from flame shots or misfires if the author's suggestions were carried out. There is a tendency on the part of the shot-firer to over-shoot, so as to bring clown more coal for the miner, and frequently a shot has not sufficient burden imposed upon it. Shooting one hole may not only lessen the burden on an adjacent hole, but may practically release it altogether, in which case the second hole should be fired with a very small charge, or perhaps it might not be necessary to shoot it at all. While the paper refers to shooting in the coal only, it should be under-stood that the instructions given are equally applicable to brushing shots. I do not wish to bring up any contentious point, but would the author say a word on cushioning with air gaps and on multiple shooting? Single shooting in rock might open up a feeder of gas which could be ignited by the ?second shot.

The permanent mould process, which is a favoured process for producing premium quality aluminium casting, is rarely used to produce magnesium alloy parts. This may be attributed different factors such as: the reservation with which the automotive industry considers using magnesium in structural castings; also the relative hot shortness of most magnesium alloys when compared to aluminium A356/357 is another factor. A third reason stems from the fact that the "heat content" of magnesium is much less than that of aluminium, resulting in the difficulty, for a relatively slow process such as permanent mould (versus pressure die casting), to reach a mould dynamic equilibrium temperature sufficiently high to avoid premature freezing and misruns. The present work will address this problem by carrying out controlled cycling of a laboratory mould, poured with aluminium and magnesium alloys. The influence of insulation of the mould and artificial electric heating on the run-in mould temperature will be determined experimentally. A thermal model will be sought for these thermal devices that will allow to predict the thermal behaviour of moulds of different geometry before a single casting is poured. The model will be tested on an industrial casting in a workshop environment.

"A new method to predict stope hangingwall failure in underground excavations is proposed. This method compares movement rate for stope hangingwalls, determined from changes in strain or deformation, with changing opening geometry. This geometry is represented by the effective radius factor (ERF), a measure of relative distance to supporting abutments from an opening surface point. This strain-ERF (SERF) approach is applied to an instrumentation program for Brunswick mine near Bathurst, New Brunswick. The SERF method for this case study predicted failure at an ERF of 13.9 m and hangingwall failure actually occurred at an approximate ERF of 12.4 m.RÉSUMÉ Cet article propose une nouvelle méthode permettant de prévoir la rupture de l’éponte supérieure des chambres d’abattage dans les excavations souterraines. Cette méthode compare la vitesse de mouvement des épontes supérieures des chambres d’abattage, déterminée à partir des changements aux niveaux des contraintes ou de la déformation, à la géométrie variable de l’ouverture au jour. Cette géométrie est représentée par le facteur du rayon effectif (ERF, de l’anglais Effective Radius Factor), une mesure de la distance relative jusqu’aux appuis latéraux de soutènement à partir d’un point de la surface d’ouverture au jour. Cette approche contraintes-ERF (SERF, de l’anglais strain-ERF) est appliquée à un programme d’instrumentation pour la mine Brunswick située près de Bathurst, dans le Nouveau-Brunswick. The most commonly used instrumentation for monitoring rock mass behaviour around open stopes is extensometers. The y-axis of Figure 1 represents how the changing rate of movement, measured using either displacement- or stress-type instruments, can be observed over time. The magnitude of movement measured by extensometers can give an approximation of the load on installed support (Milne, Pakalnis, & Lunder, 1996) and a changing rate of movement can indicate approaching instability."

"Fatigue and corrosion fatigue measurements were carried out on five commercially available metals -four steels and an aluminum alloy -which are used as structural materials in mine shaft conveyances. In the corrosion fatigue measurements, drain waters collected in the shafts of three different Canadian mines were used as corrodents. The mine waters had been selected on the basis of their relatively large differences in acidity and/ or composition.It was found that the corrosion fatigue strengths of the four steels were similar, despite their differences in tensile properties, and that the type of water used in the tests had little effect on the results. Mild steel showed the highest and most consistent values of the damage ratio (ratio between the corrosion fatigue and the plain fatigue strengths at 107 cycles). The corrosion fatigue behaviour of the aluminum alloy (ASTM Type 6061-T6) was found to differ markedly in the three mine waters. A high damage ratio (i.e., superior performance) was shown in a mine water in which the corrosion attack was uniform; much lower damage ratios were shown in waters which produced localized corrosion attack. Corrosion rates were too low to be deter-mined conveniently by conventional weight-loss methods, but calculations from polarization curves provided a rapid demonstration that corrosion rates were distinctly lower in the mine water which produced high damage ratios."

United States contacts have supplied information about that country.Zambia's political unrest and severe devaluation, combined with developments in Namibia and South Africa, enhanced staff recruiting problems in the School of Mines. Zimbabwe has a strong and developing mining department. The departments of mining in the United States and Great Britain are readjusting and contracting due to the reduction in the scale of the industry.The above factors are reviewed and their impact on the countries evaluated.IntroductionCanada trains the majority of its mining engineers domestically but a significant number are recruited from other countries. Examination of the qualifications of 200 professional engineers registered in the mining discipline in British Columbia showed that125 received their first degree from a Canadian university, 33 graduated from institutions in the United States and 42 from the rest of the world including 30 from the United Kingdom. This is a rough and-ready sample but it indicates that developments in the education of mining engineers in the United States and in Britain are relevant to the Canadian mining industry.The recent changes in the world economy and political structure have significant implications for the mining industry and for the supply and training of engineers. Change in eastern Europe coupled with the downturn in mining, especially in the European coalfields, has enabled many engineers to travel freely to the West. The low gold price and the legislative changes in Africa that have improved access to education for Africans with the ability to fill responsible positions, have reduced the South African mining industry’s overseas recruitment to a minimal level. The Australian recession has also lowered their recruitment of mining engineers from other countries."

In the United States, this is because of the booming condition of the industry and because of the purchase of control of a number of America's largest coal producers by the integrated oil and metal producing companies seeking additional fossil fuel reserves and diversification. "The Code was developed in 2004 through the Collaboration Agreement between Institution of Mining Engineers of Chile (IIMCh) and the Ministry of Mining (Chile) in Dec 2002. It is an amalgamation of current practices with respect to standards and procedures for exploration prospects, mineral resources, and reserves for the purpose of public reporting. Certification is required to prepare and issue information on mineral assets according to the guidelines that regulate the technical, economic, and environmental aspects that satisfy the conditions set by the Chilean capital and financial markets.The Mineral Resources Committee of the Instititution of Mining Engineers of Chile (IIMCh) is pleased to introduce theCode for the Certification of Exploration Prospects, Mineral Resources and Reserves which is the result of a Collaboration Agreement between the IIMCh and the Ministry of Mining established in December, 2002.This code synthetizes the present practice of the mining industry in regard to standards and procedures applied to exploration prospects, mineral resources, and reserves with the purpose of reporting publicly on financial instruments based on these mine assets in the capital markets. These standards follow general criteria already adopted and applied by capital markets in those countries characterized by a very dynamic and well developed mining sector such as Australia, Canada, Southafrica, United Kingdom, and others. The work done by the Mineral Resources Committee of the IIMCh has had the recognition of the Combined Reserves International Reporting Standards Committee (CRIRSCO) that leads the establishement of an international code in these matters. CRIRISCO is an entity formed by representatives of the countries previously mentioned, a representative of the Society of Mining Engineers of the UStates and a representative of the IIMCh. Most bought their way out , paying for major plant modifications by increasing the scale of their total operation . The current market recession may not allow new operations this route to profitability.The objective of this paper is to illustrate the economic impact of coal preparation problems on the profitability o f the total minesite operation and thus provide a sound basis for decision making process."

Hard coal, mined in Silesia Region as well as in the eastern part of Poland, is a key national resource. In Polish underground coal industry, modern mining technologies have been successfully tested and used in the last 50 years. More than 98% of the coal produced underground is extracted by longwall mining method. Current underground coal mining expands into increasing depths. The use of conventional coal extraction methods ? room and pillar and longwall with caving - is becoming increasingly difficult. The coal mining is modifying existing methods and is testing innovative technologies. Backfill is an important component of modern underground mining operations. In Polish underground mines, backfill is recognized as an integral component for extraction of coal from greater depths in a densely populated environment. The modifying and innovative methods require the use of backfill or grouting of caving to provide structural support in underground excavations and to ensure that the mining operations are safe. Depending on the geological structure, mining conditions and environmental requirements there are several variations of longwall methods used in underground coal mining in Poland, in particular: longwall with caving, longwall with backfill, longwall with grouting of caving area. This paper will discuss the different components of an effective longwall production and filling process of caving area. The paper will give a overview of the current application of backfill technology, focusing on Polish coal mining operations. This paper will also briefly describe how backfill contributes to an innovative method ? underground coal gasification. The paper discusses specific requirements for fill materials and the technology of backfilling for underground coal gasification (UCG) operations and problems of implementation and correlation of backfill parameters with other processes that occur during thermal processing of coal.

"IntroductionCyanidation is the principal process for extracting gold from ores . Many primary gold ores, however, are partially or totally refractory in the conventional cyanidation process.Considerable success has been achieved with new gold leaching techniques, such as intensive cyanidation, pressure cyanidation, carbon-in-leach cyanidation, etc. These techniques however, do not offer substantial gains in gold extraction from refractory pyrites.The more drastic pretreatment processes such as roasting, chemical oxidation, autoclave oxidation, and bacterial oxidation all utilize oxidation to break down the structures of pyrite and arsenopyrite. This generally renders the gold amenable to cyanidation.Comparative cost studies indicate that the oldest commercial pretreatment method, i.e. high temperature roasting, is currently the least expensive option if the sulphuric acid can be sold. It operates with air at atmospheric pressure and is characterized by fast reaction rates. For an alternative hydrometallurgical con centrate treatment method to be competitive, it too should operate with air at atmospheric pressure and with fast reaction rates. The NITROX process meets these conditions."

L?arrivée de nouvelles technologies sur le marché des foreuses portables combinée au besoin des mines à mieux consommer l?énergie électrique ont permis d?identifier le potentiel de deux nouveaux type de foreuses présentement utilisées en Afrique du Sud, à savoir les foreuses électriques et les foreuses hydrauliques actionnées à l?eau. Grâce à la collaboration de mines Niobec et Géant Dormant de Cambior Inc., ainsi que d?Hydro-Québec, le potentiel réel d?économie énergétique des foreuses portables hydrauliques et électriques par rapport aux foreuses conventionnelles à air comprimé a été évalué pour des roches dures et moles. Ainsi, cet article a pour objectif d faire ressortir ces potentiels d?économie énergétiques. En outre, les résultats pour une mine mécanisée et une autre mine de type filonien, dans lesquelles on retrouve des conditions de terrain différentes, seront présentés. Les résultats montrent un potentiel d?économie énergétique d?environ 70% pour la foreuse électrique et d?environ 50% pour la foreuse actionnée à l?eau. Ces résultats montrent qu?il est possible d?obtenir une meilleure efficacité énergétique par mètre foré. Ainsi, il apparaît maintenant intéressant de poursuivre les travaux de développement des deux technologies pour les applications de forage vertical et de tensionnement des boulons, et de viser à accroitre le taux de pénétration de la foreuse électrique pour le rendre équivalent à celui de la foreuse à air comprimé.
