Solid Energy New Zealand Limited has grown significantly since becoming a State Owned Enterprise in 1987. Exports, profit, turnover, output per employee are all trending upwards. The company has identified the management of Health and Safety as a key capability to sustain future growth, and to add value to the business. It has set a target of being the best practice in managing Health and Safety.   This paper examines the company's activities in the Health and Safety area, and how it sees that value can be added by preventing and containing losses through accidents involving people, property, process and the environment. Solid Energy is confident that a Planned approach to managing Health and Safety can achieve this. It will explore historical events, strategic changes, Health and Safety systems, Benchmarking, Performance Measures, initiatives, progress to date and challenges for the future.

In New South Wales, development applications for major coal mining proposals are determined by the Minister for Planning and Environment and applications for mining leases and other mineral titles are dealt with by the Minister for Mineral Resources. The environmental conditions placed on the development consent, the coal mining lease and the approvals and licences under the pollution control legislation, amount to a substantial component of any new project's planning and commissioning considerations.An outline is presented of the framework within which various approvals are granted and conditions for environmental management are imposed upon mining projects. The principles and concerns, as perceived by the regulatory authorities, on which the majority of approval conditions are based are also outlined.No attempt has been made to analyse the extent to which these principles or standards are achieved in practice, nor to discuss the degree to which some of the conditions are achievable with the current status of technology and economics in the coal industry.

Australia is now the world's second largest exporter and coal is now the nation's largest single export earner.Despite this very significant growth, Australia's competitive position is in jeopardy.

The Macraes Mining Company Limited was listed on the New Zealand and Australian stock exchanges in January 1990, and the proceeds of the float were used to purchase a 70 per cent interest in the Macraes Gold Project, previously owned by BHP Gold Mines (NZ) Limited. Macraes Mining has had a 30 per cent interest in the project since May 1984, when it was incorporated. Project financing in the way of a gold loan was secured in February 1990 and construction commenced shortly afterwards. The mine construction activities were completed within nine months and the mine commenced operations in October 1990.

The discovery and delineation of significant mineralisation in the Eliwana region continues Fortescue Metals Group’s strong exploration success. In the decade after the first hole was drilled into Christmas Creek in mid-2004 a total of over 11 Bt of hematite-goethite mineralisation have been delineated supporting the raising of $13 B, construction of five mines, 620 km of rail and a five-berth port. As of June 2014, Fortescue was shipping at the rate of 155 Mt/a. The area including the Eliwana and Flying Fish deposits is one of a number of future growth opportunities that Fortescue is currently evaluating.The Eliwana and Flying Fish deposits occur on the south dipping limb of the Brockman Syncline/Jeerinah Anticline. The Eliwana group of deposits are hosted by the Brockman Iron Formation with the Flying Fish/Broadway group hosted by the Marra Mamba Iron Formation.Structurally the area is dominated by moderate southerly dips of the regional dome and keel style folding. The regional limb is locally cross-cut at a small angle by asymmetric north facing Ophthalmian folds trending 110°. These fold sets, in part, preferentially host subsequent supergene mineralisation. Faulting is only locally apparent.Early phases of exploration commenced in 2006, with mapping of Flying Fish and reconnaissance drilling in 2007. However, due to the concurrent discovery (Clarke et al, 2009) and subsequent fast tracked development of Solomon channel iron deposit and Firetail bedded iron deposit (Simpson et al, 2011) priority was placed on developing Solomon due to its relative proximity to existing Fortescue infrastructure. Staged follow-up drilling of both Marra Mamba and Brockman targets at Eliwana was progressively undertaken from 2008 onward.As of 20 May 2014 a total of 1494 reverse circulation (RC) holes for 54 248 m and 13 diamond holes had been completed, resulting in the delineation of a Mineral Resource of 740 Mt. Concern exists about the potential release of metals from the proposed mining operation at Martha Hill to the Ohinemuri River. Speculation on possible impacts is fuelled by the dearth of published data on existing metal levels not only for this river system but for streams throughout the Coromandel. At first sight this lack of data is surprising given the apparent interest in this subject and the fact that future mining activity in this region has been a possibility since at least 1979. That such a situation has arisen is not altogether unexpected given the difficulties faced by various organisations, including the mining industry, in determining metal levels which are generally acknowledged to be low. This paper presents data for a number of stations in the vicinity of the proposed operation; it explains the analytical procedures which were adopted and the rationale for them and relates the information which has been obtained to water quality criteria.

Over 400,000 tonnes of kaolin, sillimanite, mica, kyanite, feldspar and rutile have been mined from the unique Williamstown orebodies since their discovery in the early 1900's. Numerous companies; both large and small were associated with the early development of these deposits but since the formation of Australian Industrial Minerals in 1947, this company has been the only significant producer. A combination of mining and management problems almost forced closure of the mine in the late 1970's but this was averted by a changed attitude towards mine planning. Mine development is now based on detailed geological and technical investigations, exploration for additional ore reserves is being conducted and laboratory and pilot scale studies are being undertaken to utilise both low grade ores and waste materials. The professional approach to mine and market development will ensure that Williamstown mineral products will continue to be available for many years.

Changes in the configuration of late Cenozoic volcanic arcs related to Pacific-Australian plate convergence in northern New Zealand may have localised large-scale epithermal gold-silver mineralisation to a particular part of the volcanic arc system, the Coromandel Volcanic Zone (CVZ). The history of arc-type volcanism in northern New Zealand began with the development of the continental margin Northland Volcanic Arc from early-mid Miocene (26-15 Ma). From 18-15 Ma the Northland Volcanic Arc extended south into the northern and western part of the CVZ where it is dominantly composed of andesite with lesser dacite and very minor rhyodacite. In the south, centre and east of the CVZ, younger andesite-dacite volcanism overlapped in space and time (14-5 Ma) with voluminous rhyolitic volcanism associated with rift-hosted calderas and minor basaltic eruptions. This change to bimodal rhyolitic-basaltic volcanism and extensional tectonics was a result of southwest (SW)-directed propagation of the Colville-Lau oceanic island+ arc into the north-northwest (NNW) trending Northland Volcanic Arc and its underlying continental crust. The extensional tectonic regime created in the collision zone between the two arcs is also the site of the 14-6 Ma Coromandel epithermal gold-silver province, which contains some 50 separate deposits and has a production (1862-1996) of about 300 t Au and 1150 t Ag. Extensional tectonics facilitated the emplacement of silicic magma at shallow crustal level and led to reactivation of deep basement faults. The resulting enhanced heat flow and fault-focused fluid flow localised large hydrothermal systems and associated extensive low-sulphidation epithermal gold-silver deposits in the southern part of the province, as at Waihi, Golden Cross and Karangahake.

A large number of experiments have been carried out by many workers on the recrystallization of deformed and subsequently annealed metals and alloys. Although observations on single crystals are of great importance in the study of the recrystallization textures of deformed and annealed metals, very little of this work deals with material in this form.Since, in deformed metals, the stress concentration is greatest at the grain boundaries and along the planes of slipping, it is to be expected that recrystallization will start in these regions. For example, in polycrystalline aluminium (1),:1: (2), copper (3), a-iron (4) and brass (5), (6), which had been deformed by cold-rolling, drawing, pressing or stretching and then annealed, the new grains first appeared in the boundaries of the original crystals, whilst in the case of cupronickel (7) and iron (8), recrystallization commenced along the slip planes of the deformed material. Deformed and annealed single crystals of aluminium (9) and cadmium (10) first start to recrystallize along slip planes and in deformation twins.The present work deals with the process of recrystallization of single crystals of lead after deformatjon by creep.Two factors enter into these experiments that were not met with in other work on this subject. In a previous paper the writer dealt -with the jasper bar formations and their relationship to the structural geology of older pre-Cambrian rocks in the goldfields districts of Western Australia (24). He has pointed out in this ahd other papers that jasper bars, or banded iron formations, banded hematite or ,magnetite quartzites, jaspilites and related banded ferruginous or non-ferruginous cherts, occur in abundan'ce in the Older Greenstone Series of Western Australia (22), (24), (26). They are considered to represent special forms of banded ferruginous sediments, and are usually fpund in the field interbedded with more or less metamorphosed pasaltic 01' andesitic lavas and tuffs, now amphibolites, together with occasional thin bands of normal pelitic sediments, which go to make up a large proportion of the Older Greenstones in thfs State (26).Great thicknesses of fiat-bedded ]:landed ferruginous cherts are also found associated with cherty' carbonate rocks; quartzites, shales and thin-bedded dolomite whicIi constit'ute the Nullagine (Pl'oterozoic) system in the northwest of Western Australia. In the Hamersley Range district these banded ferruginous chert beds are the hosts of important deposits of blue amphibole asbestos.In the paper mentioned above brief reference was> made to the importance, of geological structure in relation to economic geology, particularly in the goldfields regions of Western Australia, and it was shown that jasper bars may have an important role in the study of 'the structural geology of many of these regions. Of possibly more immediate economic importance is the part that these rocks play, both directly and indirectly, as host rocks for mineral deposits-the chief of Which are gold, iron ores, blue asbestos, and manganese ores. The blue asbestos bearing banded iron formations mentioned above are confined to the younger pre-Cambrian Nullagine formations. They have been described in detail elsewhere (23). In this paper it is proposed to discuss the economic geology of the jasper bars found in the older pre-Cambrian series.The jasper 'bars have in themselves little or no intrinsic value except perhaps some of the more highly coloured and banded varieties which may be utilised for ornamental and decorative purposes. Probably the best known of such varieties is the so-called "marble bar;" a belt of, strikingly coloured banded chert occurring just south and west of the famous town of that name (see Fig. 1t). This consists of a hard, very fine, even-grained rock with alternate individual stripes varying from the thickness of a sheet of paper up to an inch or more in width, and ranging in colour from clear white to yellow, from various shades of pink to brilliant...

Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is not just a catch-cry. It is an essential component of every-day life in many professions, including accountancy, law and public administration. Without realising it, many other professions are undertaking CPD activities in an un-structured way, including mining, metallurgy and geology. Examples include Annual and technical conferences of The Institute, Branch-level technical meetings and in-company training and development programmes and technical exchanges. Whilst approaches to date have undoubtedly helped keep the Australian mining industry at the forefront of mining technology, one cannot presume that technological development will stand still. To meet this challenge, human resource development must keep pace, not only to optimize utilization of technological developments, but more importantly to develop firm bases from which new products, processes and technologies can be developed within Australia.

The Pike River Coal Company is set to develop the Pike River Coal Mine in the Paparoa Ranges of New ZealandÆs South Island. The mine will be developed to extract a coking coal deposit of the Brunner Seam, some 46 km north-east of Greymouth, using a combination of continuous miners and hydraulic extraction.   The mining area is located within Department of Conservation (DOC) land and is adjacent to the escarpment of the Paparoa Range and the Paparoa National Park. As such, the major restriction to planned extraction is protection of:   +        the western escarpment, +        vertical and sub-vertical rock faces, +        permanent water courses, +        significant vegetation, and +        steep slopes.   The mine will use its elevation advantage to hydraulically flume coal from the working faces to the pit bottom area where it will be slurried to approximately 35 per cent density of solids and pumps down a slurry line to the coal prep plant some 10.5 km down the Pike River Valley. The coal will be sold on the export market as a high quality coking coal for international steel making.

The interaction of, flotation collectors with sulphide mmerals takes place at the solid-solution interface. The electrochemistry of the processes which affect this interface are discussed. The interaction of xanthates with sulphides is an electrochemical process, xanthates being electro-oxidized to chemisorbed xanthate and dixanthogen.The role of oxygen is to provide a cathodic process to allow the anodic oxidation to occur. The hydrophobic condition of the mineral surface is brought about by the presence of the oxidized xanthate species. The action of reagents which can activate or depress the flotation of sulphides is discussed briefly.

Magnesite-rich and dolomite-rich ores from the Savage River region of Tasmania are being considered as potential feed material for a commercial process for production of magnesia.Two selected samples have been characterized by chemical analysis, X-ray diffraction, and differential thermal and thermogravimetric analysis. The materials differ in calcination behaviour, with magnesite decomposing at a significantly lower temperature than dolomite. Calcination conditions have a marked effect on the rate and percentage of magnesium dissolved as the bicarbonate when slurries of the calcine are leached with carbon dioxide. From a process point of view, the feed should have the highest possible magnesite/dolomite ratio, while the optimum calcination conditions are determined by the behaviour of the magnesite component of the feed.From batch calcination tests, it is apparent that the optimum calcination conditions for magnesite-rich ore are a temperature in the vicinity of 700°C and a calcination time of one hour.

The Kelian gold mine which was developed in East Kalimantan Indonesia in 1990 - 1992 is scheduled to complete mining and processing operations in 2004. This will have a major impact on the neighbouring communities who have benefited from the jobs, economic activity and infrastructure development which has been generated by the mine. Currently, there are no formal regulations or standards specifying the procedures for relinquishment of mining leases in Indonesia. Furthermore, a move towards regional autonomy, providing greater authority and responsibility to local (regional) areas, has recently been implemented in Indonesia and limited capacity exists in the new regional governments. Consequently, in October 2000, Kelian Equatorial Mining (KEM) initiated a partnership with the local community and government to explore sustainable post-closure options for the mine site and community development programs. The Kelian mine closure strategy seeks full involvement of all stakeholders through the Kelian Mine Closure Steering Committee (MCSC) in the development of sustainable solutions which will enable communities to secure long-term benefits and minimise post-closure risks from the KEM operations. This organisation, jointly chaired by the Head (Bupati) of the regional West Kutai government and the KEM President Director, with representatives from the local communities, governments and NGOs, has developed a Charter, a website and evaluation criteria to ensure accountability and transparency. There are four technical working groups, consisting of representatives from the mine, local community leaders, NGOs, Universities, Local, Provincial and Central Government Departments, which report to the Steering Committee. These working groups have researched, developed and recommended sustainable options to the Steering Committee. The MCSC has met quarterly to examine options in accordance with the criteria set out in the Charter and has endorsed sustainable solutions which have support from Government, Community and the mine. This paper describes the closure risks, sustainable outcomes derived through the Kelian mine closure steering committee process and outlines the methodologies used to develop and endorse sustainable solutions in a society with limited capacity undergoing enormous change and uncertainty.

TheSan Cristobal gold district is located 110 km east of the port of Antofagasta, Chile. It contains the San Cristobal gold mine, where Niugini Mining Ltd. commenced a heap leach operation, with initial reserves of 10.1 million tonnes grading 1.34 g/t Au, in December, 1990. The San Cristobal district occurs within an upper Cretaceous-lower Tertiary magmatic arc. The main mineralisation occurs within a northwest trending subvertical zone, 1km long and 70 - 100 m wide, which contains rhyolite porphyry and minor breccia, and is locally termed the 'subvolcanic complex'. At the San Cristobal mine, most gold mineralisation occurs in subvertical quartz-pyrite veins which were emplaced in dilational sections of an imbricate fault system. The bulk gold resource comprises four ore shoots which formed where the vein system intersects the subvolcanic complex. Gold-bearing quartz-pyrite veins also occur at separate prospects, the Three Sisters and Sol prospects, west and south of the San Cristobal mine.   Hydrothermal alteration consists of potassic and propylitic assemblages related to intrusion of the subvolcanic complex. This alteration is overprinted by a phyllic stage which is associated with the emplacement of the quartz-pyrite veins. The oxide zone is 180 m thick, and contains native gold, electrum, limonite, and manganocarbonates. The underlying hypogene zone contains pyrite with minor chalcopyrite, sphalerite, galena, covellite, bornite, chalcocite, and arsenopyrite. Fluid inclusion studies indicate that the deposit formed at approximately 270¦C, and the mean salinity of the fluid was 4% NaCl equivalent. These observations enable the San Cristobal deposit to be classed as a porphyry- related, mesothermal quartz-vein system of the low sulphidation type.

When asked to lecture at Bendigo on the geological factors that determine the depths of ore deposits, I hesitated for a little before agreeing to lecture on the theory of deep ores in the city world famous as the pioneer of deep gold mining. If there be one place, wherein the conditions of deep-seated ore deposits should be sufficiently well understood, it is the city where the 180 mine made its bold plunge to previously neglected depths; and where the record of that famous mine has been broken by the skill of the managers, and the pluck of the proprietors, of the New Chum Railway and Lazarus mines.In the face of such practical triumphs, theoretical discussion may seem a waste of time, especially since it is often dedared that the existence of such deep-seated ores was denied by geological theory. This assertion is, however, startling since the oldest and best supported geoiogical theory of ore deposits, has taught for more than a century tliat ores must descend far below the regions of practical mining. This charge against Victorian geologists is generally based on opinions attributed to the late Sir Fredrick McCoy. It has been repeatedly affirmed that he declared that gold cannot occur pelow a depth of 300 feet. But so far I have not been able to discover that McCoy ever made any such assertion or ever held such a view.

"World-class mine projects are increasingly failing to become world-class mines. Non-technical, socio-political and environmental problems seem, in part, to be the cause. However, the intangible and qualitative nature of these problems means overcoming them will require a greater systemic understanding of how the various technical and non-technical factors interact. This is particularly important as the concept of sustainable development has changed the industry paradigm sufficiently that it is no longer clear what world-class means. Finally, this better systemic understanding of mine projects needs communicating back to the exploration sector to improve exploration targeting.However, a disconnect between the exploration and mining sectors and between geologists and mining’s other professional disciplines means this is currently not possible. The use of economic evaluation techniques to assess the risk and value presented by the various technical and non-technical factors can assist with this by giving the varied professions a common language and including inputs from all disciplines. This paper therefore suggests a theoretical framework for analysing the various technical and non-technical factors, particularly the most challenging intangible and qualitative ones, and incorporating them into the typical economic evaluation techniques used in the mining industry.Understanding the risk and value relating to both technical and non-technical risks, however, places a greater emphasis on mining geologists to be conversant with a wide range of disciplines. Mining geologists will have to develop three types of knowledge:focusedinter-disciplinarybroad. In addition, they will have to become systemic thinkers to connect these types of knowledge. This multidisciplinary approach will require the use of fundamental critical thinking skills, common sense, intuition, experience and quantitative modelling techniques, dependent on the situation. As a result, both companies and professional societies, such as the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, will have to develop ways of improving mining geologists’ inter-disciplinary and broad knowledge.CITATION:Sykes, J P and Trench, A, 2014. This paper endeavours to lay as concisely as possible, before the members the salient features of local gold milling practice, and to point out in what respects this practice differs from that of other large mining camps. This is essentially a free milling ore the gangue being quartz and the gold occurring in a coarse form. At times the ore crushed contains a good deal of slate, the latter imparting to the tailings a somewhat leaden hue.Small amounts of sulphides, chiefly iron pyrites, and at times smaller quantities of arsenical pyrites, zinc blende, and galena are contained in the stone. The average amount of sulphides contained in the ore cannot well be ascertained, as the concentrate obtained in all cases contain too much silica to form a basis of calculation...
