When the mining and milling of 1100 copper orebody commenced at Mount Isa a satisfactory grade of copper concentrate was difficult to produce. The major concentrate contaminants were fine pyrite and silica, particularly in the minus 10 microns fraction. Studies of the 1100 orebody showed that much of the fine grained pyrite and a proportion of the silica present in the ore contained carbonaceous matter in the form of complete or partial rims and as internal carbon films disseminated throughout grains. The hydrophobic surface property of the carbonaceous material resulted in inherently flotable fine pyrite and siliceous particles.The addition of a 60:40 mixture of nigrosine and dextrine, initially to a prefloat concentrate of the inherently flotable carbonaceous material and finally to the total copper flotation feed, successfully controlled the flotation rates of the carbonaceous pyrite and silica. The objective of a 25 per cent Cu concentrate grade was then achieved without decreasing copper recovery.

On-stream determination of xanthate concentrations can be made by photometric measurements at 313 nm.A simple double-beam instrument was developed for this purpose. A mercury lamp is used as the light source and a composite filter of UGll glass and chromate solution is used to isolate the required spectral region. The light beam is split into two components of approximately equal intensity. One component is passed through a reference cell containing water to a photo detector; the other component is passed through the xanthate solution to a second photo detector. The reference signal controls amplifier gain to eliminate effects of lamp intensity changes and the amplified sample signal can then be used to measure xanthate concentration.Plant trials showed that provided a clear solution free of air bubbles was obtained from an on-stream filter, the instrument indicated the xanthate concentration and operated satisfactorily for long periods.

ALTHOUGH great progress has been made in flotation of the Broken Hill silver-lead-zinc ores, no paper dealing with this subject has been presented to the members of the Institute since James Hebbard's valuable contribution in 1913. Almost every discovery or development in the history of flotation has formed the basis 6f a patent, and but few experimentalists have overlooked the fact that their investigations might lead to the establishment of a patentable process. This, together with the aftermath of patent litigation, naturally resulted in secrecy being maintained in matters appertaining to the art, and the industry as a whole has consequently suffered considerably. Much valuable time has been wasted through numbers ofmen repeating work along certain lines, which, unknown to them, had already been thoroughly exhausted by others, whereas a lot of this would have been avoided by a freer interchange of information amongst those directly concerned. Owing to differences in the ore treated and the various applications of flotation concentration in relation to gravity methods, the flotation problems of the various mines differ considerably. This, together with the secrecy previously referred to, hasresulted in the development of numerous systems and machines, most of which would appear, to the casual observer, to comprise separate and distinct processes. The author has endeavoured to show how much these processes have in common with one another, and, at the same time, has tried to convey some general ideas on flotation to those members of the Institute who are not directly associated with this branch of concentration.

The mineral composition and microtextures of a cubanite-rich sulphide ore are described and cubanite breakdown textures are illustrated. The occurrence of cubanite in macroscopic dimensions is featured.The origin of the ore is tentatively related to a composite ore fluid arising initially from an ultramalic source and extracting some metal components from an older granite mass along the margin of which the serpentine was emplaced. Some alternative possibilities as to origin are also mentioned.

Seafield ResourcesÆ offshore placer gold project covers c.10 000 km2 of the Westland continental shelf between Karamea and Jacksons Head, from the low-water mark out to the 120 m isobath (Figure 1). De Beers Marine (DBM), the marine diamond subsidiary of the De Beers Group, will carry out the project with geological input from Placer Solutions (PSL). DBM bring a wealth of expertise and advanced technology to the project, developed during their 20 years of exploration and mining of diamond placers on the Atlantic shelf of southern Africa, where they have also maintained a strong environmental record.   Glaciers and high-energy rivers emanating from the Southern Alps have transported substantial quantities of gold bearing sediment onto the Westland continental shelf during Pleistocene glacial periods, when fluvial gradients are steeper, sea level is c.120 m lower and most of the shelf is exposed. These deposits have been extensively reworked by the advancing shoreline and marine processes during interglacial marine transgressions, and most are now buried beneath a variable thickness of post-glacial marine sand, silt and mud. DBM will use side-scan sonar, swath bathymetry, Chirp sub-bottom profiling and a magnetometer to map the sea floor and sediments beneath it, guided by PSLÆs predictive geological model for gold distribution on the shelf. Cactus grab and vibro-core samples will be used to ground-truth the geophysics and provide stratigraphic, sedimentological and gold distribution data for incorporation into the geological model. Areas of interest identified by the geophysical and sampling data will be investigated in more detail, with closer-spaced geophysics and Mega-drill sampling to a maximum sediment depth of 20 m beneath the sea floor. These samples will be raised to the ship with air-lift suction technology, processed onboard for mineralogical and grade information, then returned to the sea floor. Environmental baseline data will be gathered from Van Veen grab samples of seabed sediment taken throughout the area during the prospecting programme.

It is a pleasure and a privilege to be with you for the Annual Conference of The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy.The inaugural meeting of The Institute was held in Adelaide in April, 1893. Through the kindness of your President, who passed on to me several publications concerning The Institutute I have been able to glance back over the eighty years in which The Institute has served both the profession and Australia.In that record, many names of great distinction caught my eyes. When one reads the list of past presidents of the The Institute since 1893 and the list of those to whom The Institute Medal has been awarded, one reads the headings of a biographical dictionary of the Australian mineral industries. Many famous names are there-men from the great mining companies, engineers, scientists, metallurgists and geologists. Simply to read the names is to recall great enterprise and great achievement. Going over those names one hears the echoes of the inspiring story of the establishment of the Australian steel industry, the electrolytic zinc inq.ustry, all the major developments in the mining of coal, gold, copper, silver and lead, the treatment of difficult ores, the geological exploration of a cqntinent, the discovery of uranium, bauxite, petroleum, nickel, the establishment of the alumina industry and finally the mammoth earthmoving operations of today. The list of names is a chronicle of great men who did a mighty work. They stand like milestones in the progress of a nation.When one reads further and runs down the titles of some of the papers published in the Proceedings of The Institute even a layman like myself can appreciate the dramatic developments in mining and metallurgy that have transformed the whole practice of the mineral industries in our land. Australians have made some notable innovations and discoveries both in mining techniques and in the processing of ores. Constraints on the mineral industry are best treated as issues that have to be understood and managed in partnership rather than in conflict with communities. TheZapopan development at Mt Todd in Australia and the Martha Hill development at Waihi in New Zealand are but two of many recent successful examples at the local level.   However, at the national level, the issues are more complex and more difficult to resolve because the most influential stakeholders are now the urban electorates and governments defer to their perceptions when making decisions and policy. In the developed countries, government policies for the development of mineral resources have been progressively eroded since the early 1970s. At the same time policies for the environment and for native land rights have generally been carried out in a way that has reduced access to minerals and increased the cost and risks for prospectors and developers (Hancock, 1995). Since the end of the Cold War, the lesser developed countries (LDCs) have introduced policies to attract investment in their mineral resources that remained undeveloped under previous unstable or hostile regimes. The increased attraction of these LDCs and the decreased attraction of the developed countries has caused many Australian and North American companies to outlay increasing proportions of their budgets and capital investment in the LDCs.   Significantly, LDC policies for environment protection do not discourage exploration and mine development, Surveys of the relative appeal of the LDCs and the traditional mining countries of the developed world, rate Chile, Argentina and Indonesia ahead of Australia and Canada in terms of risk, delays and ease of doing business (Australian Mining Monthly, February 1994).

Validation and Simulation of Optimised Compressive Crushing Ores and aggregates are used in countless applications all around in the society. The frequent and escalating usage of these natural resources requires efforts aimed at not only making do with what is available, but also undertaking actions to improve the production yield and the processes involved. This strive to improve the performance and efficiency of existing crushers and crushing processes has brought about research concerning optimisation of crushing plants as well as theoretical optimisation of crushing. Previous work shows that different applications and different materials require different compressive crushing in order to accomplish a theoretically optimal size distribution. These optimisation results, obtained by genetic evolutionary algorithms and evaluated with so called fitness functions, convey the theoretically optimal number of compressions and their corresponding compression ratios. Presented in this paper are thus some laboratory crushing tests, which are conducted in order to validate a set of previously optimised crushing sequences. More specifically, interparticle crushing sequences are carried out in a Piston-die testing equipment, where samples are sieved between each compression. The subsequent analysis of these results shows good correlation with model predictions, which combined with a comparative study between presented optimisation results and measured data from a real crusher indicate a significant potential for improvement. However, before redesigning crushers according to what is theoretically optimal, the resulting impact as well as the effects on the outcome of a crushing plant must be examined. Crushing plant simulations using the software PlantDesigner« are consequently performed. Models of existing crushers are altered, resulting in changed particle size distributions from some of the crushers in a crushing plant. Thence, it is concluded that significant gains can be made in terms of capacity, process yield and energy consumption.

Newcrest’s Cadia concentrator operated from 1998 to 2012 with a traditional SABC grinding circuit treating Cadia open pit ore. The Cadia comminution circuit was well characterised through surveys and data that are available in the public domain, and became a benchmark standard for the industry and practitioners modelling large SAG mill based circuits. In 2012, the HPGR-based crushing circuit was introduced in front of the SAG mill to increase throughput when treating the Cadia East ore that was derived from an underground block cave. This ore was expected to be more competent and have a coarser run-of-mine size distribution.Numerous previous papers have described the design and commissioning of the Cadia HPGR-based circuit.This paper describes the improvement in comminution energy consumption resulting from the introduction of the HPGR, including identifying the impact of process complexity and an increase in ancillary energy consumption for conveyors, screening, and crushing.CITATION:Lane, G S, Seppelt, J and Wang, E, 2018. The methods and equipment developed and used at the Mount Isa mine to obtain samples of uncemented hydraulic fill lying above major horizontal pillars are described. From existing underground development, samples were obtained at distances up to 50 m, of which up to 30 m was through hard rock. Samples were used to predict fill behaviour as it affected mining security during recovery of the pillars.Specialized equipment for difficult sampling situations and also other sampling exercises are described.

Recent exploration by the Cyprus Amax-Highlands Pacific-OMRD Joint Venture at the Frieda River project, PNG has demonstrated the extent of igneous phases, alteration and mineralisation, and the relationships between the various mineralisation styles in this major Cu-Au porphyry-epithermal system. The project area is in the obducted volcano-sedimentary section of the New Guinea mobile belt 78 km NE of Ok Tedi. It is between two major NNE dipping faults interpreted to have undergone thrusting then sinistral shear in the Late Miocene to Recent. The Frieda River Igneous Complex is a 15 km +7 km ovoid area with a central pod of basaltic andesite volcanics with cogenetic diorite to quartz diorite subvolcanic intrusions, and flanking clastic sediments. A series of late-stage, hornblende quartz diorite plugs ring the main igneous mass. The igneous rocks have a normal K calc-alkaline character with a very limited compositional variation. The intrusives are exposed on the eastern flank of the complex and have five mappable units and numerous defined phases. The southeastern quarter of the complex is host to a cluster of at least seven stockwork porphyry copper and skarn-hosted deposits within an area of 4.5 +3.5 km. The Horse-Ivaal and Koki deposits have identified resources totalling 804 mt @ 0.46 per cent Cu and 0.3 ppm Au, and the other deposits are in various stages of exploration. All these deposits are related to the Horse Microdiorite phase of the Complex and are outlined by a zone of potassic-propylitic-SCC alteration. Local overprinting argillic and advanced argillic alteration is related to a separate, post-porphyry mineralisation intrusive phase. The recent emphasis has been on the identification of higher-grade zones using ideas of structural control and specific intrusive-alteration-mineralisation relationships within the known resource areas. An elongate area 13 km x 4 km in the centre of the Complex has advanced argillic alteration in the volcanic rocks. This alteration zone hosts the Nena deposit (52.8 mt @ two per cent Cu and 0.7 ppm Au) and approximately 20 prospects of high sulphidation type. These deposits are distributed along two prominent NW-trending siliceous ridges interpreted as regional scale structures. Nena is a pod of vein and replacement sulphides hosted in a tectonically controlled multiphase breccia that overprints the advanced argillic alteration. The Nena deposit is 4 km from the nearest of the major porphyry occurrences. It is underlain by basemetal veins and minor porphyry mineralisation that are related to the Flimtem Trachyandesite intrusive phase. The recent search for additional Nena-type ore has focussed on the siliceous ridges using detailed structural and geochemical ore control criteria. Widespread, but poorly mineralised, basemetal-bearing carbonate and sulphate veins form a ring around the mineralised area. These veins have sericitic selvages, cut the porphyry mineralisation, but are cut by and locally underlie the silica-alunite phase of the advanced argillic alteration. The current model is that there are discrete intrusive phases responsible for each of major hydrothermal events at Frieda. These include from oldest to youngest:the Koki phase has no related alteration or mineralisation; the dominant Frieda phase has the hornfels, early skarn and minor magnetite-chalcopyrite mineralisation; the Horse phase has the bulk of porphyry copper and skarn-hosted mineralisation and minor basemetal veins; the peripheral Knob phase is barren; and the Flimtem phase has the high sulphidation epithermal deposits and minor porphyry and vein mineralisation. The intrusive phases span the interval 17 to 11.5 Ma and are co-magmatic. They represent discrete batches off the parent magma, rather than simple fractionation products.

The Groote Eylandt manganese ore deposits contain mainly pyrolusite and cryptomelane with lesser amounts of the manganese minerals lithiophorite, todorokite, psilomelane, and nsutite. The major non-manganese minerals which occur are quartz, kaolinite, and goethite.Determination of the mineralogy relies mainly on x-ray diffraction analysis. Quantitative methods for the determination of pymlusite and cryptomelane in Groote Eylandt manganese ores have been developed, A large amount of isomorphous substitution may occur in the manganese minerals and a number of minor and trace element associations have been noted. A correlation has been established between the potassium and cryptomelane contents for a wide range of ore types. Anomalous calcium, magnesium, and sodium values occur in samples containing todorokite, and barium is associated with psilomelane. Groote Eylandt lithiophorite appears to contain negligible amounts of lithium (<O· 05 per cent).A relationship between the H20+ and the Al203, K20, and Fe203 contents has been estahlished indicating that much of the combined water content is due to the presence of kaolinite and goethite, and cap be removed by beneficiation of the ore.

Formation of gold-bearing veins in Otago Schist was intimately linked to the structural evolution of the schist belt. The currently-exploited Macraes gold deposit formed in a regional scale shear zone during latemetamorphic uplift of the schist belt. Further exploration for this type of deposit will be facilitated by an increased understanding of the late-metamorphic structural evolution of the schist belt. To this end, a three-dimensional cross section through the Otago Schist has been drawn using structural data gathered at outcrops in a 20 - 40 km wide transect across central Otago. This is the first continuous detailed structural section to be drawn through the belt. The section spans an area from Textural Zone 1 metagreywacke of the Torlesse terrane in the northeast through TZ 4 schist in the central region and across the Caples-Torlesse boundary to Textural Zone 3 schist of the Caples terrane in the southwest. Two different late-metamorphic structural generations are identified in this section: the long-recognised Manorburn Generation, and a new æPoolburn GenerationÆ. The location of the Caples-Torlesse boundary has been refined on this transect by field mapping combined with whole rock geochemistry.

The Phoenix mine on the Mararoa Reef at Norseman, Western Australia, provides an outstanding: AUstralian instance of the recurrence of payable ore beneath the bottom of an abandoned mine, and an interesting and instructive example of the development ofideas with regard to ore recurrence in a particular district. The Mararoa Reef is the most productive of several hypothermal goldquartz vains in pre-Cambrian basic volc81olics which strike northsouth and dip on the average, 45 degrees east. The Phoenix minewas abandoned at 500 ft. vertical depth after producing 342,000 tons of 9.9 dwt. recovery grade (equivalent to nearly half of the total production of the Norseman field) from a 2,500 ft.. long, horizontally disposed oreshoot, which is reported to have had an ore outcrop only 30 ft. in length.Interest in the field was revived in 1933, and by 1941 new ore mined and developed on the Mararoa Reef by Central Norseman Gold Corporation N.L. amounted to approximately 700,000 tons of 6.7 dwt. recovery grade. In the same period another oreshoot of similar size and grade was developed by Norseman Gold Mines N.L., south of the old Mararoa company's site. As shown by the plans, the ore occurs in discontinuous shoots. The intervening area of shear is poor in quartz as well as in gold. Geological work on behalf of Western Mining Corporation Ltd., and Central Norseman Gold Corporation N.L. has been in progress in the mine and in the field more or less continuously from 1913 to 1941 and again since 1946. This paper describes the successive advances in the understanding of the exploratory problem up to late 1941, to which several investigators have contributed. H. E. McKinstryl visited the mine and recognised that the ore occurred primarily on the flatly dipping sections of the vein, as distinct from the steeply dippingsections, in a wide shear zone with reverse movement. Many of the flatly dipping fractures were seen to exhibit tension phenomena and to link one shear plane to the next below on the footwall side. Polyacrylamide flocculating agent has been used in the Leaching Division 'of the Risdon Works of the Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia Limited since October, 1960. The number of thickeners in the continuous thickening stage was thereby reduced from eight to three. There has been an increase of 25 per cent in throughput and a reduction of solids in thickener over-flow from 3-4 g/l. solids to 0·5 g Ir. solids. Reagent addition has been at the rate of 0·25 lb Separan NP10 per ton solids.Additionally there has been a gain of 3 per cent in current efficiency as the direct result of the addition of Separan NP10 to purified cadmium sulphate solution priOl; to electrolysis for cadmium metal. A smoother deposit has resulted and it has been possible to increase deposition time between strippings from 47 to 71 hr. However, there has been a slight increase in the lead content of the cadmium metal produced.The use of Separan NP10 to settle copper bearing residue in a batch process stage has resulted in a five-fold increase in settlement rate and a reduction in purification cycle time.INTRODUCTIONThe Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia Limited, Risdon, Tasmania, produces zinc by electrolysis of purified zinc sulphate solution, the raw material being zinc sulphide concentrate. In the Risdon process (Van Arsdale, 1953; J ohnstone, 1953; Ross, 1949) the compound zinc ferrite (ZnO.Fe203) is formed during the concentrate roasting stage. When the roasted material is leached in dilute sulphuric acid the zinc ferrite is not attacked, and it remains as part of the insoluble leach residue, of which it may form as much as two-thirds of the whole. The Resource Management Act 1991 (RMA) and the Crown Minerals Act 1991 (CMA) both came into force on 1 October 1991. The purpose behind RMA was to integrate the existing laws dealing with town and country planning, land subdivision, water and soil, minerals and energy resources, coastal management, air pollution and noise control into one omnibus Act. Originally, there was a section in RMA dealing with minerals. However, this section was taken out of RMA and a companion piece of legislation - namely CMA - was passed with RMA.

The epithermal Au-Ag deposits of the Hauraki Goldfield have formed in the convergent plate margin setting of the Coromandel Volcanic Zone (CVZ). The deposits form as siliceous lodes in the upper parts of geothermal systems associated with andesitic and rhyolitic volcanism. Two types of low sulphidation epithermal mineralisation are recognised in these volcanic terranes. Vein deposits within the rhyolitic terrane in the east and south of the CVZ (Whitianga Province) are typified by Chalcedonic Silica-Adularia-Illite type mineralisation. The veins are hosted by both rhyolite-dacite volcanic rocks and the underlying andesitic basement. The mineralisation formed by episodic violent decompressional boiling of deeply circulating meteoric water, with some magmatic fluid contribution; this boiling was associated with hydraulic fracturing and hydrothermal eruptions in geothermal systems where the piezometric surface of the deep geothermal reservoir lay near-surface. Such episodic boiling provides chalcedonic veining, banding and brecciation textures, adularia stability, bladed calcite, and extreme loss of H2S gas from the fluid to cause major gold deposition.   Crystalline Quartz-Illite-(Adularia-Kaolinite) type mineralisation is widespread in the andesitic terrane forming the northern and western portions of the CVZ (Kuaotunu Province). There is a spatial association with weak mineralisation of the high sulphidation (Vuggy Silica-Alunite-Kaolinite-Illite) epithermal type and porphyry eu-Au type. Crystalline Quartz mineralisation is probably formed by the mixing of shallow acidic groundwaters with the ascending deep geothermal fluid in geothermal systems beneath andesitic stratovolcanoes. The piezometric surface to the deep geothermal reservoir in these systems is likely to lie at considerable depth, with acidic gases rising from the geothermal reservoir condensing within the overlying vadose zone. The cooling effect, oxidation and pH decrease accompanying mixing apparently overcomes the dilution effect, and results in quartz deposition, illite (and locally kaolinite) alteration, and precipitation of gold. A high level of base-metal sulphide precipitation also enhances gold deposition. Violent boiling of the mixing fluids may occur at local structural dilation sites, producing high grade "bonanza" gold mineralisation.

Tumbling mills and some theoretical and practical aspects of milling are discussed. Attention is directed towards the difficulty of relating the dynamical analyses of the motions of particles within mills to the existing treatments of breakage processes. This synthesis may be advanced by a study of milling that utilizes the matrix analysis of breakage processes. Application of the matrix analysis to results obtained on (i) grinding in open-circuit a zinc ore in a conical pebble mill and in a modified conical mill, (ii) "grinding of cement clinker in a compound mill, and (iii) to some drop-weight grindability tests is discussed. It is shown that the 'IT-breakage model adequately describes the breakage processes of each of the tests. (The proportion broken in each breakage cycle is given by 'IT and is independent of particle size.)The size distributions of the products are accurately predicted in the cases considered. Matrix analyses of the breakage of coals, various ores and a cement clinker have been made. Appendices give an elementary account of the matrix methods and give the equations fully describing reverse order closed circuit operations. The matrix analyses of breakage processes and the survey are used to examine briefly closed circuit grinding.INTRODUCTIONTumbling mills are slow-speed crushing and grinding machines which have been developed from some fairly simple types into many widely differing forms.
