Minor iron formation related base metal sulphide mineralization occurs in granulite facies metamorphic rocks of the early Proterozoic Willyama Complex. Rock sequences hosting three iron formation related Cu, Zn, Pb prospects from the Thackaringa Group (Suite 3) are described. A caparison of host rock sequences, style of mineralization and facies of iron formations suggests major differences in terms of the overall depositional environment. However, significant similarities are present with respect to the nature and distribution of iron formation facies and the occurrence of chlorite 'alteration' zones in close proximity to mineralization in all cases. The chlorite within these zones occurs in a number of diverse forms in a range of rock types. A comparison of the prospects shows that there is no evidence to indicate that the chlorite in the zones is a retrograde alteration product of former higher grade prograde mineralogies - the chlorite appears to have survived granulite facies metamorphism. The mode of occurence of the chlorite in the 'alteration' zones together with the fact that the association quartz + chlorite + magnetite + pyrite + base metals is cx rmn to all areas suggests that the chlorite is specifically related to the processes which deposited the stratiform iron formations and related sulphides. It is considered that the chlorite precursor was a prenetanorphic alteration product or chemical sediment closely related to submarine hot spring activity which was also the source for chemical sediment precursors of the iron formations, associated lode rocks and Sulphides.

Optimising drill performance has always been a primary goal of drilling and blasting managers. Improving drilling rates and utilisation will ultimately drive the cost per foot or metre downward. Additionally, more consistent production will ensure shovel or dragline performance goals are met and the chances of machine idle time is minimised. Over the past 20 years, many studies have examined rotary drilling factors and performance issues. In most cases a common theory points to energy input versus drilling output. Indexes such as specific energy and total work energy have been -developed to quantify the drilling process. As general engineering principles dictate, energy is required to drill rock by overcoming compressive and shear strengths. Concurrently, the greater the energy input, the faster the penetration output. Therefore, by examining the basic drilling energy parameters, optimisation is possible. The principles of rotary drilling are driven by five factors. When optimised individually and as a system, drill performance will improve. Most recent studies all agree that a performance relationship exists between bit load, bit rotation, and hole flushing. Additionally, proper bit selection and most of all, the operator, can have a tremendous effect on drill productivity. By analysing these factors and establishing the best case scenario, an overall drilling system can be engineered to match the mining characteristics. Furthermore, by balancing these factors, a lower cost will be achieved through increased production rates, maintenance costs, and effective drill utilisation.

Ranger Uranium Mines (RUM) operates an open cut located in the Top End of the North- ern Territory. Strict environmental controls govern all operations and the water management requirements have the greatest impact on mine planning. The two main goals of planning are to provide mill feed and to mine sufficient suitable quality waste rock for ongoing con- struction of the tailings dam. Early planning concentrated on staged development of the pit to provide access to as much ore as possible for a given amount of development. All waste was considered to be suitable construction material. Grade control of crusher feed was the main problem in planning, as wide vari- ations occur in ore grade over relatively short distances. Water management for the site ope- rates a no release' system for contaminated waters. Design storage has proven inadequate, and the open cut has been used as the extra storage. As construction of future stages of the tailings dam requires non-mineralised rock materials which meet specific quality criteria, the mine has had to re-examine long term plan- ning and pit development strategies. This has entailed the collection of much data not re- quired under normal mining conditions, such as the assaying of waste drill core. A shift in the present day oil exploration scenario from West Coast can be foreseen keeping in mind peak of exploration in Cambay Basin and fast pace of development in Bombay High and its associated fields by the end of this century. Shifts in exploration from structural traps to stratigraphic traps, techno- logical development to drill in deep waters, improving economic situation for oil ventures and proven oil and gas potential of East Coast basins suggest that Indian oil explorat- ion scene will be at its peak along east coast during early 21st century. Hydrocarbon shows in Poonch and Jawalamukhi in Punjab Basin, improvements in drilling to greater depths, better seismic data aquisition, good source rock potential of Subathus and its equivalents and large geologi- cally mapped structures will reopen new avenues for explorationists. Not much exploration effort has been put up so far in Ganga Basin. Keeping in mind size of the basin, sedimentary thickness involved, presence of algal matter deposited in shallow marine environment & higher hydrocarbon indications warrant active exploration. Gondwanas in India having such a large sedimentary area can not be ignored keeping in view generation and production from the non marine sediments of Kenya, Chad, Sudan, Gadon and China. Gondwanas become all the more important in view of gas production from their equivalents-Karoos in Ethiopia and South Africa. In all, above mentioned changes can be predicted in Indian oil exploration scenario during 21st century.

Atlas Copco is a leading provider of industrial productivity solutions (Atlas Copco, 2007) and one of the worldÆs largest suppliers of rock drilling equipment. The business division of Atlas Copco Construction and Mining Technique is based in +rebro, Sweden with the majority of their equipment produced in a number of facilities within the area. As part of the 2006 AusIMM/Atlas Copco Scholarship I was fortunate enough to visit these facilities to experience first hand this truly unique global company. Through numerous presentations on the various divisions and products manufactured by the company, I saw the broad range of products and services offered by the company and came to realise it is much more than just selling drills. Other highlights included a brief love affair, a tour of EuropeÆs largest underground mine (or factory depending who you ask), a drink at the ice bar at the ice hotel in JukkasjSrvi, and a number of dinners of reindeer. Overall this it was a truly amazing experience with all involved with the program going out of their way to ensure I got the most out of the trip. More importantly, through no effort at all, everyone naturally conveyed their passion for the industry and the company which is a great credit to the æAtlas Copco WayÆ thereby creating a company æcommitted to your superior productivity through interaction and innovationÆ.

Papua New Guinea is geologically prospective for large, medium and small mineral discoveries. All profitable developments to date have been very large mines but for every large mine there should be many small mines which could be developed under appropriate circumstances.The Papua New Guinea Government should, with appropriate changes to fiscal, legislative and policy regimes, create a favourable exploration envir-onment to encourage a major increase in exploration by small exploration companies and subsequent discoveries and mine development.

The process started in the WA gold and nickel mines and has since spread around the nation to iron ore, base metals and coal mines.The mine contracting industry has progressed from tentative beginnings in the 80s to the current situation where it is now providing high standards of professional management, safety and workmanship with competent people and high quality plant and equipment.

The paper contains the publication of timber shapes recovered from the Burra Mines during open cut operations in the 1970s. The timber was in the process of being disposed of for fire wood. All timber shapes still in existence in September 1990 were drawn.The collection revealed a number of different types of caps and legs. There were also end plates and wall plates from what appeared to be a hanging sets of shaft timber.

In mining and processing operations where minerals, high in pyrite and low in calcite/dolomite are processed, acid is generated, which needs to be neutralised. Ticor at Empangeni in South Africa (SA) produces rutile (TiO2), leucoxene (TiO2 plus iron compounds), titanium (Ti), zircon (Zi) and ilmenite (TiO2 plus iron compounds). Neutralisation is required in the processing plant where acid is leached into the wash water. This water needs to be treated to a quality suitable for re-use in the metallurgical process or to a higher quality to make it suitable for discharge into the Empangeni sewage system (SA). For re-use the water needs to be neutral and under-saturated with respect to gypsum while for discharge into the sewage system the sulfate concentration needs to be reduced to less than 500 mg/L (as SO4). Acid mine water is generally neutralised with lime. Disadvantages associated with lime are the costs and maintenance of the slaking equipment as well as hazards, associated with handling of the alkali. The cost of powdered limestone (CaCO3) in South Africa, a by-product, is 50 - 60 per cent cheaper than lime. A technology has been developed where limestone is used for neutralisation of acid mine water instead of lime. This development includes: Limestone handling and dosing system. A novel, robust system has been developed where waste CaCO3 from the paper industry is slurried to a constant density. A full-scale plant was constructed to evaluate its performance (Figure 4). The dosing system consists of an inclined slab onto which the limestone is stored and from where it is slurried into a make-up tank. The density of the slurry in the make-up tank is controlled via a loadcell that measures the weight of the tank (operated at constant volume) and activates/deactivates the spray of the recycle slurry onto the slab. Integrated limestone neutralisation/lime treatment process. In this process powdered CaCO3 is used for neutralisation and partial sulfate removal of acid leached from the coal washing plant. The sulfate concentration can be further reduced to below the saturation level of gypsum (ie 1200 mg/L) through gypsum crystallisation by means of lime treatment, resulting in metal precipitation (eg Fe3+ and Al3+). CO2- treatment for CaCO3 precipitation. The pH of the lime treated water can be adjusted to pH levels of 8.5 and lower using CO2. The CO2, generated during limestone neutralisation (Equation 2), can be captured and used in this stage of the process. The first two stages (limestone- and lime neutralisation) of this technology have been implemented on full-scale at Ticor to treat the effluent of the process. The constructed plant is 80 m3/hr and differs from coal processing plants by way of not containing Fe(II) and Fe(III) in the water. The CO2-treatment stage (Stage 3) will soon be implemented at IHM as part of a program to optimise the technology for maximum benefits.

This paper presents the results and findings of geochemical and mineralogical testwork conducted on samples collected from waste rock dumps at two mine sites, located in South Carolina, USA (Site 1) and Sudbury Ontario, Canada (Site 2). Important aspects of the relationship between the physical and geochemical aspects of the dumps are also presented. The overall aims of the project were to 1. determine if the physical and hydrological nature of the waste-rock dumps had any impact on the geochemical and mineralogical characteristics of the dump materials; and 2. to identify key implications for dump construction for ARD control. The results of geochemical and mineralogical tests indicate that the waste rock at Site 1 had undergone significant in-dump weathering and was relatively advanced with respect to ARD evolution. In contrast, the waste rock at Site 2 had undergone some weathering, however still contained a considerable amount of sulfide minerals. Testing also suggested that flushing of oxidation products at Site 2 had been limited, which therefore promoted the storage of oxidation products at the site. In addition, materials that had a D50 particle size in the range of 5 mm to 30 mm appeared to be more readily flushed than samples that had a D50 particle size of 30 mm. This suggested that preferential water pathways may have developed within the dumps at both sites.

The rapid production and accumulation of mineral processing wastes in the environment can present serious threats to environmental quality and human health. Phytostabilisation with native plant ecosystems is, in many cases, a preferred option for rehabilitation of mine waste storage facilities. However, much of the literature has focused on species selection in short-term experiments to test their suitability under the often extreme chemical conditions in the wastes without addressing the fundamental requirements – ie hydrogeochemical stabilisation and functional root zones. As a result, successful examples of phytostabilisation of mine wastes such as base metal tailings have been rare, especially if success is defined as meeting the completion criteria of non-polluting and sustainable land system at rehabilitated sites. Conventional capping options to isolate reactive tailings/wastes by using physical break and/or sealing layers are often not reliable in the long term (particularly under semi-arid climatic conditions) and, in many cases, they may not be feasible in the field due to the large areas to be covered and the lack of adequate suitable materials at mine sites. By using sulfidic tailings as an example, we have proposed a new paradigm for phytostabilising mine wastes – ecologically engineered pedogenesis in tailings involving accelerated physical, chemical and biological weathering of tailings minerals to achieve hydrogeochemical stabilisation and the development of soil functions, soil horizons and functional root zones.Ecologically engineering functional root zones firstly requires controlling geochemical reactivity in the wastes (ie hydrogeochemical stabilisation), which can cause polluting effects in the root zone and plant toxicity. By means of ecological engineering, in situ weathering of primary minerals (eg pyrites) in tailings may be accelerated by adding functional materials (eg functionalised biochars and organic matter) in the waste slurry during the process of deposition. This will remove or diminish key risk factors (eg potential acidity in tailings and elevated soluble heavy metals) in the solid phase, before placing growth media for reconstructing root zones and transplanting/sowing target plant species. However, much of the acidity, soluble metals/metalloids and other salts would be transported out of the solid phase into the wastewater, which can be addressed by on-site water treatment facilities during mine operation. The trajectory and state of engineered pedogenesis in the weathered tailings may be manipulated to provide specific soil horizons within future root zones that are dynamically evolved toward fully functional soil subsystem within rehabilitated plant ecosystems.CITATION:Huang, L, Baumgartl, T, Zhou, L and Mulligan, D, 2014. A process has been developed to recover at least 75% of the 2-naphthol contained in cobalt precipitate produced during the removal of cobalt from electrolytic zinc plant solution. The recovered material is in a form suitable for recycling to precipitate further cobalt from solution. The process consists essentially of two steps. The first involves leaching of cobalt precipitate in 400 g/l sodium hydroxide solution at 95¦C in the presence of an additive. The second step involves treating the filtrate from the leaching stage with sodium sulphide to precipitate cobalt as the sulphide thereby re- generating the sodium hydroxide for recycling. The process is only marginally profitable at present 2-naphthol prices, giving a net return of 20% on a capital investment of $1 200 000. A reaction mechanism is proposed which accounts for the 25% loss of the 2-naphthol in the recovery process.

Safety First and zero accidents are the targets most mines in Australia are aiming for, but manual processes and procedures limit the capabilities and response time in emergency situations. Even with a high safety focus, accidents and incidents still happen, too often with tragic outcomes. Dangerous areas, narrow roads and winding curves are all daily obstacles that threaten workforce safety. Every unforeseen event, such as traffic collisions and other accidents, puts lives in danger and weakens production. Safety must be guaranteed.

Desktop X-ray powder diffraction using a D2 PHASER equipped with fast linear detector was performed on several iron ore and mill scale samples. Data were analysed using cluster analysis and Rietveld quantitative phase analysis. The quantitative mineralogy of both materials could be established. Thus the input is provided for understanding the energy consumption and the CO2 emission during iron production. Furthermore, tabletop XRD allows to distinguish iron ore from mill scales and to quantify their mixtures.

To study the ventilation of a mine (improve on the existing situation, examine extension projects) the calculation program used must take into account all the resistance values in the branches of the network. These resistance values are generally determined by measurements, which are accurate to a greater or lesser extent. In order to arrive by calculation at the flowrates measured :n the mine at a given moment, the resistance values have tto be adjusted experimentally. This manual operation is lengthy and delicate.

The Hermit Islands are situated at 145¦ E 1 30'S in the Bismarck Sea approximately 200km WNW of Manus Island. They are dominated by basalt flows, one of which yielded a K/Ar isotopic date of 3.4 + 0.05Ma. All basalts examined were olivine-bearing, but one sample also contained hornblende. Although many outcrops were weathered, no evidence of pervasive hydrothermal alteration was observed on any islands and non-weathered rocks are petrographically fresh and many retain glass.

Australian continental crust has accreted and consolidated by thirds: 1/3 during Archean time, 1/3 during Early to mid-Proterozoic time, and 1/3 during latest Precambrian to mostly Paleozoic time. The progression of orogenic systems and the crustal consolidations they represent seem not fundamentally different in basic orogenic processes from better known Mesozoic-Cenozoic examples in that accretionary, continental margin, collisional, and intraplate intracratonic inverted and/or reactivated systems are all recognizable in the tectonic evolution ofAustralia.

This paper describes the new legislative regime that will apply to the regulation of the minerals industry in New Zealand.The reform of New Zealand's minerals legislation was initiated in January 1988 when the Minister for the Environment, Rt Hon Geoffrey Palmer, announced the Government's intention to review all the major laws governing New Zealand's resources. The Resource Management Bill is scheduled for introduction to the House in December 1989 and its date of enactment is scheduled for June 1990.
