The production of stabilised backfill at mine sites commonly uses Portland cement as the binder. Calcined gypsum has cementing properties and is cheaper to produce than cement. This paper discusses the strength of fills stabilised with calcined gypsum. Laboratory tests were carried out on specimens prepared from tailings obtained from four different sites to allow for the wide variety of tailings found in practice. The results show that the gypsum-based fills can achieve a strength of I MPa using around two and a half to four times the corresponding amount of cement.

Municipal solid waste of incineration (MSWI) bottom ashes are recycled as aggregates in civil engineering. These heterogeneous materials are composed of crystalline and glassy solid phases which contain trace metals, presenting a potential risk to the environment. Secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) can provide quantitative chemical information, in particular the localisation of metals at trace level. Unstable glassy phases formed during incineration are present in relatively high proportions. Their analyses suggest a continuum between melilite-bearing glasses and dark glasses enriched in iron with abundant spinel aggregates. These primary glasses are enriched in zinc (~4500 ppm) but depleted in lead (~800 ppm) by comparison with the bulk chemical composition and reference materials. Heterogeneous cementing and encrusting admixtures on coarse grains are studied in a second step. SIMS imaging suggests a superposition of band zones including an intermediate layer enriched in iron oxyhydroxides and a superficial layer with calcium accumulation. A strong spatial association between lead and iron is systematically observed. Extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) supports these observations by demonstrating that lead co-precipitation within iron oxyhydroxides, or sorption on their surfaces, may be a main containment process in the cementing and encrusting admixtures, whereas lead speciation is globally more complex in MSWI bottom ash.

Escalating energy and electricity costs have become one of the biggest expenditure drivers in mining operations. During the last eight years, energy costs have trebled when expressed as a percentage of total running cost in South African mines. Power consumption on mines is controlled by three main strategies, namely load clipping where energy use is reduced for parts of the day, load shifting where energy use is shifted to other parts of the day, and energy efficiency where energy use is reduced permanently.To reduce the operating costs of ventilating and cooling underground mines continuously, system optimisation studies must be completed. A part of this paper describes methods that can be used to reduce energy usage by optimising cooling and ventilation systems during planning and in existing operations using network simulation models that accurately reflect the current and planned ventilation conditions. These models are used to examine various options for improving the overall ventilation and cooling efficiency. Furthermore, an overview of refrigeration and cooling practices, and ventilation strategies is presented.Ventilation-on-demand and cooling-on-demand strategies have the potential to reduce both the capital and operating costs associated with mine ventilation and cooling systems. In addition, it has been proven that modern strategies and energy-efficient tactics are technically feasible.It is also important that the correct equipment selection is made. This must be based on the best technology with the highest energy efficiency. Where equipment replacement is being considered, energy efficiency must be one of the key decision drivers.In this paper a number of studies were presented and from the experience and the data presented it is clear that a large financial benefit is possible through optimising ventilation and cooling during the planning of mines or within an existing operating mine.CITATION:du Plessis, J J L, 2015. In October 1993 it was decided to undertake the fourth phase of mining at Big Bell. This decision followed the exhaustion of open pit reserves in January 1993. Two stages of mining were proposed for the new underground mine. The initial stage would mine the remnant ore, consisting of the rib and crown pillars and lower grade ore on the hangingwall and footwall side of the old open stopes, which were mined from the 1930s to 1950s. Most of the old open stopes were backfilled with either deslimed mill tailings or development mullock, both of which were economic to recover. However, the mineable ore from this resource was difficult to evaluate. The second stage focused on mining ore outside the remnant areas and was initially proposed as a Core and Shell method under a caving hangingwall. This method has since been superseded with sublevel caving, in part due to the very high and deviatoric stress conditions encountered at Big Bell and the relatively long mining cycle required for open stoping. The problems and challenges discussed in this paper will cover the identification of remnant ore reserves, dewatering the old workings, and remnant mining.

With commodities suffering dramatically low real prices, mining business margins are under intense scrutiny. Unfortunately, management systems developed early this century for manufacturing are driving counterproductive behaviours that choke productivity. The paper and presentation will explain this and present a proven methodology for increasing productivity. This will be supported by operational examples from Australian and American mining management to demonstrate the importance of modern business performance measurement and analysis systems. It will explain the importance of management systems in driving organisational change to sustain superior productivity and margins. The paper will explain why many executives and managers confuse production (a measure of volume) with productivity (which measures efficiency and effectiveness). It will explain how this and other counterproductive managerial and operator behaviours and attitudes are driven by traditional business management systems exacerbated by managerial and consulting fads. The paper will begin with the simple principle that to improve results one needs to first improve the process producing the result û and will show how this is often violated. Improving productivity then boils down to:accurately identifying opportunities using sound, modern measurement, analysis and reporting systems; methodically improving operating and commercial processes, and changing peopleÆs behaviours and attitudes to sustain changes in practices. The paper will include fundamentals of applying sound measurement and analysis to:processes directly, eg cycle time charts and their impact in cyclical (non-continuous) operations commonly used in rock breakage; drivers of productivity; and process results themselves since correct analysis identifies opportunities accurately. The paper will cover the importance of practical leadership and the need to follow a simple, solid plan for changing systems that drive behaviour. Overall, it will highlight use of modern performance Measurement, Analysis and Reporting systems to drive behaviours and improve margins - without capital investment û and make executive and managerial work easier and more effective.

The mining industry is currently focusing to develop and adopt sustainable collector chemistry that can efficiently recover valuable minerals from their natural state. However, a limited number of research can be seen on the design and synthesis of polymeric flotation collectors. The focal objective of this research is to synthesise a more effective polymeric collector with advanced architecture to utilise in the mineral processing industry. Reversible Addition-Fragmentation Chain Transfer (RAFT) co-polymers with cardanol derivatives have the potential to selectively trap valuable metals in the flotation process in a more efficient way. Cardanol exhibits amenability to chemical modification for making tailor-made monomers that can further produce polymers with high value. The synthesis of a series of fit for purpose copolymers in this study was accomplished by RAFT polymerisation. The ability to design complex architecture is a significant advantage in engineering polymeric collectors by RAFT polymerisation. Initially, commercially available cardanol was converted to a cardanol based monomer and copolymerised with commercially available monomers to synthesise a series of novel cardanol based copolymers with predetermined molecular weights. The side groups of the copolymer were chemically modified to incorporate functionality that can be selectively adsorbed on the chalcopyrite surface.

Many types of micro-organisms inhabit iron ore deposits contributing to biogenic formation and conversion of iron oxides and associated minerals. Bacteria such as Paenibacillus polymyxa are capable of significantly altering the surface chemical behaviour of iron ore minerals such as haematite, alumina, calcite and silica. Differing mineral surface affinities of bacterial cells and metabolic products such as proteins and polysaccharides can be utilised to induce their flotation or flocculation. Mineral-specific bioreagents such as proteins are generated when bacteria are grown in the presence of haematite, alumina, calcite and silica. Alumina-grown bacterial cells and proteins separated from such cells were found to be capable of separating alumina from haematite. Biodegradation of iron ore flotation collectors such as amines and oleates can be effectively utilised to achieve environmental control in iron ore processing mills.

MIM Holdings Limited (MIM) committed to a long-term future in copper in the Carpentaria Mineral Province in 1996 with the development of the Enterprise and Ernest Henry mines, and an upgrade of MIMsÆ copper smelter in Mount Isa, and copper refinery in Townsville. The upgrade of the copper smelter will enable the smelter to produce 250 000 tpa of copper with a single primary smelting unit, the copper Isasmelt furnace installed in 1992. The copper Isasmelt furnace currently smelts concentrate containing 145 000 tpa copper. To reduce the risk associated with the copper smelter upgrade, and shorten the ramp up time of the upgraded smelter, two high-rate trials were undertaken in 1997 to demonstrate that the copper Isasmelt furnace could, with an additional 525 tpd of tonnage oxygen, treat concentrates containing 250 000 tpa copper. During the trials the concentrate feed rate to the Isasmelt furnace was increased from its average rate of 100 tph of concentrate to 150 tph of concentrate. The increase in the capacity of the furnace was achieved by: supplementing the installed tonnage oxygen capacity of 595 tpd with an additional 300 tpd supply; reducing variability in the furnace feed rate from ¦25 per cent to less than ¦5 per cent; and reducing tramp air. The Isasmelt furnace smelted concentrate at a rate of 140 to 150 tph for four hours 25 minutes during Trial 1, and at a rate of 150 tph of concentrate for five hours and 30 minutes during Trial 2. The oxygen utilisation was 100 per cent during the trials with the process remaining under control. As a result of the development work for the trials the average treatment rate of the furnace under normal conditions increased by ten per cent.

Two types of low sulphidation epithermal deposits that have different gangue mineralogies and ore shoot geometries are recognised. One has laterally near-continuous ore shoots over a significant vertical interval that consist of quartz, chalcedony, pyrite, minor base metal sulphides and adularia, with electrum. The other type of deposit has discrete near-vertical ore shoots of a lesser vertical extent, that consist of quartz, pyrite, base metal sulphides, sulphosalts, electrum and in their upper parts barite, which are enclosed in veins of earlier quartz. The gold mineralisation in both deposit types is considered to be a co-precipitate of pyrite, with that in the first type of deposit produced by prolonged boiling in an upflow of a hydrothermal system (Upflow Deposits); an example is Waihi in New Zealand. The other type is produced by mixing, a deep water primed for gold deposition by prior limited boiling, with an iron-bearing oxidised condensate of the steam released by the boiling, in an outflow of a hydrothermal system (Outflow Deposits); an example is Thames in New Zealand. Early recognition of these different types of deposits can be used to develop mineralisation models of predictive value on which to focus exploration drilling. Early recognition of an Upflow Deposit promotes an extensive program to delineate the extension of the main ore shoot. In contrast recognition of an Outflow Deposit requires a more intensive approach to find individual ore shoots which, although smaller than those found in Upflow Deposits, may be high-grade, particularly if there is earlier mineralisation present to act as a protore.

This paper presents an overview of the current status of mine water management in South Africa. The regulatory framework within which mine water management operates is set out, based on the principles and policies embodied in the relevant legislation. The status of the gold and coal mining industries, with regard to water management, is presented on the basis of studies that have been undertaken to develop water and salt balances for these industries. While the data is not available to quantify the status of ARD in South Africa, the range of typical mine water quality problems faced by South African gold and coal mines is presented. The status quo, problems and challenges relating to mine water management are presented and discussed. It is shown that, while there have been major strides in the last decade, and mine water management and treatment in South Africa has moved onto the forefront of mine environmental management, important problems still persist. There is still a significant amount of improvement required, particularly in the field of prediction of water quality deterioration and the application of such predictions to the identification of management actions that can be applied to prevent or minimise mine water pollution in the shortmedium- and long-term.

The rapid socio-economic growth of Hanoi City coincides with a corresponding growth of the transport demand. Today, the transport in Hanoi is completely dependent on private modes of transport. Because of the lack of an efficient public transport system and the expected rapid increase in traffic volumes, the movement of people and goods in the urban areas of Hanoi will cause congestion in the present city transport network. The solution of the construction of new roads, or the widening of the existing streets, is very expensive in urban areas and usually causes many social problems due to the resettlement of people. From the point of view of the number of inhabitants, Hanoi City is now over one million. Above this number the international experience shows that the public transportation must be a mass transport system with large capacity, commercial speed and also independent as much as possible from the street network. According to the Hanoi Master Plan for 2020, the Hanoi urban population will be over 3.5 million persons. Also, in the next 15 years, the distances between centre-destination points will be doubled by comparison to 1995.

Several technical and economic factors have to be taken into consideration in developing an optimal mining method. This paper describes some of the important factors learnt during the evolution of the sublevel cave mining method at Trojan Nickel Mine, part of the Bindura Nickel Corporation (BNC) in Zimbabwe. Sublevel caving (SLC) has been successfully implemented at Trojan mine since its introduction in 1994. The method has evolved over the past six years into a system that has brought about improvements in efficiencies and productivity. Although the original design parameters used were sound and provided a solid foundation for the system, they needed to be optimised to get the best out of the mining method. Improvements and changes have been made in areas such as the drilling process, charging and blasting techniques, ring pattern design, development size and shape, and the draw control system. This has enabled the mine to develop an SLC operation that is efficient and innovative. Experience gained, together with the theory available has given us a much better understanding of the system. This knowledge will be used in the future to enhance the system further. Given the low grades of the BNC Mines, management recognises that only through technical excellence and efficient mining can the mines reduce mining costs and maintain profitability and competitiveness on the world market. In the Zimbabwe mining industry reaction to technological change, mechanisation and advancement have been relatively slow, due to isolation and economic constraints, compared to the rest of the world. Economic difficulties prevail, with high inflation levels, a poor exchange rate, lack of foreign currency and other associated problems. Despite these constraints, the bold steps taken have transformed Trojan mine into a more efficient and competitive operation, presenting itself as the leading mine in the BNC group. Appendices give data to illustrate the benefits obtained.

Given that the mining industry is committed to sustainable development principles and that Australia is experiencing changes to the regulatory environment that aim to modernise the water sector and encourage adoption of consistent approaches, there is a well defined need for the Australian minerals industry to develop a water accounting framework. This requires: key terms and definitions for water metrics for use in the Australian minerals industry that is consistent with the wider water sector, a suite of metrics representing key components of an operationÆs water balance, a calculation method for some of the metrics, and a reporting protocol. This paper presents the methodology that was used to derive these four components. Existing accounting frameworks were reviewed and key terms and definitions that were consistent with current requirements were proposed. A calculation methodology was developed to obtain some of the key indicators and variables that cannot be easily measured directly (water loss through evaporation is an example). The adopted terms and definitions dictated model development, with the conclusion that a systems approach was the most effective calculation process. To test the proposed definitions and calculation methodology, values for water metrics were derived for eight sites. The proposed framework and definitions could deal with the specific situations selected as case studies. The associated calculation methodology produced complete accounts at various levels. Some elements of the accounts could be directly checked against available data and simulations. The framework captured well variations in the reuse efficiencies; reuse efficiency could even vary for similar processes. It is concluded that this preliminary accounting framework provides a consistent language and metrics for quantifying and communicating water management, both at the intersection of the site with the surrounding landscape (through detailed reporting of site inputs and outputs) and within operational activities. Using this consistent framework for quantifying and documenting water use within an operation will provide a platform for compiling and comparing minerals industry water use with other sectors. This may support benchmarking activities within regions or companies and help demonstrate leadership amongst water users in water resource stewardship. The approach presented here is applicable to a wide variety of mining and processing activities, and biophysical environments, and can be adopted as the first step towards developing national water accounts for the Australian Minerals Industry.

Atmospheric air on a moisture free volume basis consists of approximately 21 per cent oxygen. The current minimum threshold for oxygen in Australia is 19.5 per cent. Atmospheric air generally will also contain water vapour and will also pick up further moisture as it flows around a mine ventilation network. This paper details the results of a study to determine how much oxygen depletion can occur due to the sole impact of increasing the moisture content of air and the potential impacts of this on ventilation system design. The study shows that the moisture content can have a significant impact on the oxygen concentration in mine air. The main factors controlling the impact are the barometric pressure, dry bulb temperature and relative humidity of the air.CITATION:Tuck, M A, 2015. The æMine to MillÆ concept is not new. In fact, it is the underlying objective of every mine. Unfortunately, in many operations the management structure and reporting systems have created independent æbusinessesÆ within the overall mining enterprise. This has created incentives to optimise the performance of each component of the operation rather than the enterprise as a whole. The Mine to Mill Conference organised by The AusIMM in October 1998 documented a number of case studies where run of mine ore was not presented to the mill in the best possible form for subsequent stages of comminution and processing. A number of examples were quoted where modest expenditure in the mine had a very significant impact on downstream process efficiency and hence costs. Examples included:the minimisation of fines in the mining and handling of iron ore; the management of fines in blasting and crushing for a copper heap leach operation; the control of blast damage, mining recovery and dilution in open cut coal operations; and the optimisation of mine fragmentation to increase mill throughput in gold and copper operations. The latter topic has been trialed at a number of mines and is referred to as æMine to MillÆ fragmentation. A number of æMine to MillÆ type investigations have been reported in the literature including Pease et al, Simkus and Dance, Nielsen, Scott et al, Kojovic et al, Kanchibotla et al, Bulow et al and Hawkes from the 1998 Mine to Mill Conference. In addition, a number of studies are in progress or the results have yet to be published. These studies have demonstrated the feasibility of obtaining the data required to characterise the breakage behaviour of ores and to model the impact of changes to blasting practices on process efficiency. Characterising the breakage behaviour of ores is a vital step in the management of fragmentation and comminution in mines. The characteristics of importance to fragmentation fall outside the parameters conventionally required to describe the economic geology of a deposit. æMine to MillÆ optimisation of fragmentation means that the mining engineer needs information from the geologist in order to be able to help the metallurgist. Providing this information requires close interaction between these groups.

The production of paste backfill has typically been accomplished through the adaptation of existing technology. Thickeners and disc filters have several drawbacks when applied to production of tailings paste backfill. Personnel at CANMETÆs backfill research laboratory in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada have been carrying out research into and development of methods to produce paste backfill using total mill tailings since 1991. Using a silo for production of paste is not a new concept but has been refined to a marketable level. This technology is based on a fluidization principle that assists in settling the tailings to an homogenous state in a silo. Other developments include patented de-watering technology for use in the silo to speed the settling of the solids to a suitable solids content, optimisation of silo geometry, and instrumentation related to paste backfill production and transportation. The advantages to fluidisation technology are in reduced capital cost, reduced operating costs and in the environmental benefits of using full plant tailings over classified tailings or alluvial aggregates. Another major advantage is in the ability of this technology to be retrofitted to existing hydraulic backfill plants to further reduce capital cost. This paper details the development of the new technology as well as the associated cost savings over other technologies. It will also look at the research and development of unique components that make this technology work.

Field and laboratory data combined with computational modelling have been used to predict the pit water quality for the Highway Reward mine. Open pit mining of the Highway Reward copper-gold deposit has produced a final mining void with a diameter of 600 m and a depth of 280 m. This void will be left to fill with ground and surface water once pumping of pit water ceases. Several leaching tables were constructed to simulate weathering reactions and surface water run-off in the major pit wall units during a 200-day leaching experiment. "In sulfide nickel deposits throughout the world, pentlandite and pyrrhotite are commonly found together along with varying amounts of chalcopyrite and platinum group minerals (PGMs). The mafic or ultramafic host silicates associated with the sulfide mineralisation commonly exhibit a complex assemblage of magnesium bearing silicates, many of which themselves contain significant nickel. Four types of ore are proposed, each presenting their own processing challenges. These are: economic grades of Ni, Cu and PGE (platinum group element) in a pyrrhotite-bearing sulfide deposit, with low pyrrhotite to pentlandite ratios  economic grades of Ni, Cu and PGE in a pyrrhotite-bearing sulfide deposit, with moderate to high pyrrhotite to pentlandite ratios uneconomic high pyrrhotite: low tenor deposits low-grade low sulfide, high MgO ± PGE deposits that can sometimes be economically mined and processed.The grades and recoveries of nickel concentrates produced from sulfide ores can be significantly impacted by the ore mineral texture, the nickel tenor of the sulfides, and the polytype of pyrrhotite which may be either hexagonal (non-magnetic) or monoclinic (magnetic). The mineralogy of the silicates is also of great importance, especially the magnesium silicates and those which tend to produce particles which are asbestiform or which affect slurry viscosity. Other magnesium silicates such as serpentine carry nickel in solid solution, limiting the recovery entitlement of nickel by flotation because serpentine is not amenable to sulfide flotation mechanisms. Differences in plant flow sheets and reagent assemblages are required to effectively separate these minerals.Experience from a variety of plant operations and from extensive flow sheet development programs are discussed. Flash flotation plays an integral role in many of the gold and sulfide mineral concentrators around the world, and yet despite this widespread use, very little information on this unit process is available in the published literature. For operations to maximise the performance of their flash flotation circuits, understanding how these cells operate, the nature of the particles they target and how to predict whether a flash flotation cell should be used on a specific ore type is of vital importance. This paper provides a summary of the key findings of a large flash flotation research project based in the operating environment of a refractory gold concentrator. The influence of key flotation performance criteria including gas dispersion, residence time and particle segregation within the cell will be discussed and recommendations for process improvements will be made throughout. The nature of the particles within the flash cell will be examined, as will the impact on the type of particles that are passed to downstream processes when the flash flotation cell is taken off-line. Exploration for coal has been on-going in South Australia for the past 100 years. During this period substantial resources of low rank coal have been delineated throughout the State. These deposits are of variable quality often with high moisture, sodium, chlorine, sulphur and ash content and although generally regarded as suitable for use in conventional pulverised fuel boilers, many are difficult to utilise. The only operating coal mine in South Australia is at Leigh Creek where coal bearing shale was discovered by chance in 1888 during excavation of a railway dam near the township of Copley. Leigh Creek has had a very diverse mining history from the initial small scale underground mining through to open-cut mining utilising draglines and more recently large shovels and trucks.
