Jabiru Metals completed a feasibility study on the Jaguar Base Metal Project in July 2005. The study was based on conventional truck haulage via a decline. Conveyor haulage was considered but not in sufficient detail to provide a meaningful comparison. The current study investigates the cost and productivity of alternative ore transport systems for the Jaguar project. The options considered are conventional underground truck, conveyor, road train, rigid frame truck, monorail haulage and shaft hoisting. Shaft hoisting was not considered in detail due to the high capital outlay for such a relatively short mine life of less than six years. This study goes beyond the common approach of evaluating haulage systems in isolation; it includes development costs, timing of ore production and costs associated with mine services as well as administration and milling costs. The results of this study indicate that the best haulage option for the Jaguar project is conventional truck using the Hitachi AH400 trucks. The net present value (NPV) for this option is A$8.13 million higher than the next best option namely the Kiruna E635 electric truck. The conveyor option has the lowest operating cost per tonne of ore but the longer development time negatively impacts on its NPV. The monorail option is considered impractical due to the number and length of trains required to achieve production targets.

It is well known in the industry that good classification system performance is vital to efficient ball mill circuit performance. But what is meant by good classification system performance, and how is it achieved? Unfortunately, the perceived complexity of classification systems, and the day-to-day time demands placed on the practicing metallurgist, all too often put the low-hanging fruit of classification system optimisation in the ‘I’ll do it later’ basket. Additionally, lingering confusion about basics such as the relationship between circulating load ratio and ball mill circuit performance makes the optimisation objective seem nebulous to both plant metallurgist and designer.Some of this confusion can be eliminated by taking a step back from the overwhelming detail of sharpness of separation curves, circulating load ratios, cyclone feed pressures, vortex and apex sizes etc, and focusing on the purpose or function of the classification system – to apply mill power to particles that need further size reduction! The classification system efficiency (CSE) metric captures how well the classification system is performing its function with two quick and easy size distribution analyses.Once CSE is understood and implemented as the optimisation criteria, well-tested methods for improving CSE can be implemented and quickly measured at plant scale to give confidence that the right change was made.This paper will describe CSE and how it is measured in practice. Next, a guide for improving CSE through manipulation of design and operating variables in the classification system will be provided. The acceptable rate of rise of the tailings beaches on upstream-raised tailings storage facilities (TSFs) is critical to life of mine planning. This is illustrated through a case study in Western Australia presented in this paper. Accurate estimates of expected beach slopes, the maximum rate of rise at which the tailings can be placed, and the dry density that the tailings solids will achieve after deposition (stored density) are required in order to design TSFs that will allow upstream raises to be constructed safely and economically. Where operations have been occurring for some time, these three parameters are able to be measured and can be well-defined. If process plant throughputs are proposed to increase through mine expansion, for example, increasing the rate of rise of the tailings can compromise the potential for upstream TSF raising, thus influencing the viability of such an expansion, the timing for its implementation, and significantly increase costs.This paper outlines how rate of rise can be a key constraint, and that ‘rules of thumb’ that are typically applied may not result in the outcomes they were meant to achieve. An example of an experimental method to justify an increase to the ‘rule of thumb’ ~2.5 m/year limit for gold tailings in a semi-arid climatic setting is discussed, followed by rate of rise modelling that ultimately framed the decision-making process for a mine expansion. The rate of rise modelling method was adopted to carefully distribute tailings deposition across four TSFs, comprising nine separate tailings cells, in order to maintain appropriate rates of rise. The implications resulting from various deposition splits are presented, including the need for expansion. In addition, this paper outlines the effect of rate of rise on the state (density) of the tailings after deposition, and provides commentary on how anecdotally acceptable rates of rise, based on the aforementioned ‘rule of thumb’ of 2.5 m/year may not provide assurance of geotechnical stability through the tailings achieving a dilative state, as has been thought in the past. An example of the influence of rate of rise on the state of the tailings, with respect to air-drying and the critical state line (CSL) for the material, is presented. The data indicate that reducing the rate of rise may allow a higher dry density to be achieved through air-drying (evaporative desiccation), sufficient to move the material from the contractive to the dilative zone (i.e. from above the CSL, to sufficiently below it).CITATION:Chapman, P J and Williams, D A, 2018. The Kwademen Au deposit was discovered in 1977- 1978 following a regional geochemical survey carried out as part of a UNDP (United Nations Development Programme) and BUMIGEB (Bureau des Mines et de la Geologie du Burkina) mineral exploration programme. The climate in Burkina Faso is rather dry, with markedly seasonal rainfall averaging 800 mm pa in the Kwademen project area. The relief is low and the drainage poorly developed, so that soil sampling was preferred to stream sediment sampling. Rocks have been subjected to deep lateritic weathering, so that they are transformed into a mixture of Fe-oxides and kaolinite over depths varying between 30 and 40 m. At the regional stage, soil samples (30-40 cm depth) were collected a a 300 x 500 m grid. The Kwademen deposit was indicated by Cu, Zn, Mo and Au anomalies. Subsequently, an area of 9.2 km2 was covered by a detailed geochemical survey by soil (100 x 50 m) and auger sampling. The regional anomaly was fully confirmed, and subsequent drilling intersected mineralized ore shoots, justifying the establishment of an evaluation project led by the U.N.R.F. (United Nations Revolving Fund) in 1983- 1985.

Rock mass response in blasting is an important element to determine the performance of a blast along with its other outcomes. The near-field monitoring for rock mass response analysis is vital for determining the behaviour of a blast; however, due to costly and cumbersome methods involved in such measurements the subject has received scant attention so far and the publications on this account are perfunctory in nature. This paper presents a non-destructive method to monitor the blast-induced pressure in the rock mass at a distance from a blasthole. The methodology of monitoring and a few examples of actual field monitoring are detailed in this paper. The responses of the rock in the near-field of a blasthole under dynamic loading have been documented to predict fragmentation and throw. The proposed method has also been used in limited cases earlier by the author to predict flyrock using a semi-empirical method and trajectory equation. The pros and cons of the method are discussed while throwing light on the actual response and the prediction of fragmentation and throw of blasted rock.CITATION:Raina, A K and Murthy, V M S R, 2015. The Australian coal industry has undergone sevenfold growth over the last 30 years and since 1985 has been the world's largest coal exporter. Three quarters of Australia's coal production is exported so its future is dependent on it remaining internationally competitive with other energy sources and other coal exporting countries. Coal is likely to increase its share of the energy market during the nine- ties as oil prices increase, new coal-fired capacity is commissioned and some form of nuclear energy is developed which is of acceptable safety standards to the community for use in the 21st century. Gas may take a part of coal's anticipated market share by the Year 2000. While coal exports will increase from China, Colombia, Indonesia and Venezuela and satisfy some of this additional coal demand Australia will also expand its export production, due to its existing advantages. The United States, Canada, South Africa, Poland and USSR seem unlikely to enjoy the same degrees of expansion and some, particularly Poland and USSR, will decline. Australia will always find it difficult to compete in the more distant markets due to levels of ocean freight, although its high quality coals will tend to partly offset such disadvantage.

ArcelorMittal Prijedor is a goethitic iron ore mine located in the north-west of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which mainly supplies ArcelorMittal’s European subsidiaries. Annual production of the asset stands at the level of 1.5–2.1 million tons of iron ore product which is sent to ArcelorMittal Zenica steelmaking plant. Two types of products with approximately 50 per cent Fe are generated in Prijedor through a process composed by crushing, screening, and magnetic separation stages. Within this process one of the tailings produced is called ‘ultrafines’. The ‘ultrafines’ product corresponds to the desliming hydrocyclones overflow in Prijedor plant, which is classified in a size fraction below 25 μm and corresponds to about 5 per cent of feed. This material is richer in iron than the coarser size fractions of the ore but do not present a good performance in concentration processes. In this way, several studies have been carried out during the last years to find solutions to use the ‘ultrafines’ material without success. In this context, the possibility of dehydroxylate the goethite contained in the material transforming the mineral into hematite and thus increasing the iron grade of the final product was investigated. During the research, several dehydroxylation tests with different temperatures and time of exposure were performed. Using dihydroxylation process at temperatures higher than 800°C it was possible to produce a material with 43 per cent Fe from the original 39 per cent Fe ‘ultrafines’ sample. In addition, the dehydroxylation tests confirmed that goethite becomes completely transformed into hematite at 400°C (with an exposure time of 60 mins) and material is completely sintered at 1200°C. A simulation study based on dehydroxylation tests results showed that it would be possible to use a ‘ultrafines’ product with Fe grade higher than 45 per cent to produce a material with 50 per cent Fe through a complete dehydroxylation process.

Quay Magnesium Limited (QMG) listed on the Australian Stock Exchange in late September 2004 having raised approximately A$30 million with the object of designing, constructing, commissioning and operating a 15 000 tpa magnesium alloy production facility in Nanjing, China. Site construction commenced in February 2005, with installation of all major components completed by the end of October 2005. Hot commissioning was simultaneously commenced with the final stages of installation, leading to the first stage of continuous ingot casting by mid November 2005. Since that time, ramp-up to the name plate capacity has been undertaken. This presentation highlights some of the more significant technical and logistical hurdles that have had to be overcome in order to meet the high quality product specifications required by a range of QMG customers.

High-nugget gold orebodies are difficult to model in 3D because samples from diamond drill core are generally too small to provide reliable estimates of the gold content of the larger body of rock, and therefore interpolation of gold assay values between drill holes is also unreliable. As a result, gold resources are generally underestimated in areas of high nugget. In practice, proxies for gold mineralisation, such as presence of alteration, specific structures or high vein density, have been used by geologists to predict rocks which are favourable for mineralisation. However, there has been no automated method for combining the predictive capabilities of several proxies, except by human judgement.We have been developing a method to combine several different types of geological features or geochemical analyses into a single measure using conditional probability. Conditional probability provides a meaningful numerical measure for the favourability of rocks for containing high-grade gold mineralisation. This measure can be interpolated in the exploration space, providing a sound basis for a 3D model of the orebody. Determination of cut-off grade?strategy is one of the most important stages of open pit mine planning and design. It is the parameter directly influencing the financial, technical, economic, legal, environmental, social and political issues in relation to mining operation. Choosing the optimum cut-off grade strategy that maximises the economic outcome has been a major topic of research workers for nearly one century. Many researchers have contributed in devising methods and algorithms, such as dynamic programming, linear programming, optimal control and so on for various aspects of its determination. In this paper, a non-linear mathematical programming for cut-off grade strategy optimisation is presented, considering the three main stages of mining operation introduced by K F Lane. In this model maximisation of net present value of mining operation, under the three constraints of mining stagesÆ capacities, considered as the optimisation criteria. Due to the discrete representation of the mining resource, the proposed non-linear formulation is approximated by a non-linear signomial geometric programming. According to non-convexity and the complexity of the proposed model, an augmented Lagrangian genetic algorithm was used to find the optimum cut-off grade strategy under varying and fixed price circumstances. To validate the proposed non-linear model efficiency, the results were compared with the results obtained by the K F Lane methodology. It was found that the proposed non-linear model works efficiently in the determination of cut-off grade strategy. According to the simplicity of the structure of non-linear programming modelling in comparison with dynamic programming it is hoped that, further development of this model would certainly provide the ability of considering managerial and technical flexibilities as well as incorporating more real mining conditions in the determination of cut-off grade strategy optimisation.

The growing popularity of platinum and platinum group metals (or PGMs, including palladium, rhodium and others) for a wide range of applications leads to some interesting issues for mining and sustainability. The uses for PGMs includes catalytic converters for air pollution control in vehicles, growing jewellery use, catalysts for various purposes (especially petroleum and chemicals processing), hydrogen fuel cells and many others. Given the growing importance of most of these PGM uses in more sustainable technologies or in making industrial processes more efficient, it is critical to understand the complex sustainability issues which surround platinum and PGMs. At present, South Africa is the dominant PGMs producer and holds about 88 per cent of estimated global resources, with important but relatively minor production and resources in Zimbabwe, Russia, Canada and the United States. Given the concentrated location of PGM resources, what are the likely trends in PGM mining with respect to environmental sustainability? That is, what are the costs in terms of energy, pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, water, land use impacts, social impacts, economic aspects associated with this globally important industry? This paper compiles and analyses a range of data on platinum-PGM mining, focusing primarily on South Africa. It synthesises a unique combination of data which relates typical production aspects such as ore grade and scale with sustainability aspects such as greenhouse, energy and water costs. The findings are critical in understanding the debate about the increasing environmental and social costs of some materials and technologies which are considered crucial for sustainable industries based on PGMs. Overall, the paper represents a valuable insight into the platinum-PGM sector, providing a range of useful data for understanding the environmental sustainability of this particular group of precious metals.

Ventilation on demand (VOD) has been demonstrated to significantly reduce operating costs for ventilation fans, by reducing fan output to meet demand. The most effective method for reducing operating costs is to use variable speed drives to adjust the speed of ventilation fans as required – this achieves significantly larger power savings that damper or vane control alone.However, this mode of control will significantly increase the number of speed cycles the ventilation fans will experience. Fabricated impellers have a limited number of start stop cycles based on the materials and method of construction, and the operating stresses due to centrifugal forces. This means that fans experiencing constant or regular speed changes will experience a reduced fatiguelife compared with fans that are run at constant speed.The fatigue life of fans operated under various speeds using VOD is difficult to predict, as it is dependent on the magnitude of speed changes, and the frequency, which will be varied to meet demand. It is important to be able to estimate remaining fatigue life to assist in maintenance planning and avoid unplanned maintenance activities.This paper will review extensive VOD data on fan operating conditions from two primary mine ventilation fans. This paper will demonstrate how this data can be used to calculate accumulated fatigue and predict the remaining fatigue life, and how this compares with fixed speed or non-VOD controlled fans.The increased maintenance costs for the impellers will also be estimated, and compared to the operating cost savings using VOD, to determine if the savings outweigh the additional maintenance costs.

The coal mining industry is now faced with new regulatory requirements that limit the discharge of chlorides into receiving streams. To meet these new regulatory standards for treated mine water, a zero liquid waste approach was developed using advanced treatment technologies. As Olympic Dam rapidly expands into the Southern Mine Area (SMA) the Mine Geology team has concurrently ramped up underground diamond drilling to sustain rates of above 175 km/a. With >10 underground rigs double-shifting, traditional paper sections used for the management of drill programs were no longer optimal due to scale of operations. An opportunity was identified to modernise monitoring of all underground diamond drill programs, through the integration of logged copper sulfide estimates with Olympic Dam’s first-fully integrated deposit-scale geological model in Leapfrog Geo. This paper describes the transition within the Mine Geology team from reliance on 2D paper sections, towards near-real time 3D geological modelling for optimising end-of-hole decisions in the field. This transition was enabled by innovative database solutions informing locally constrained implicit models, limited by a distance buffer around active underground fan drilling. Due to the high volume of historic drilling, there were significant computational challenges with the implementation of daily production style implicit models at Olympic Dam and initial testing of regular updates to implicit gradeshells and sulfide domains required in excess of 12 hrs to run. The enabling solution was to optimise the interfaces between the AcQuire database, Deswik MDM and Leapfrog Geo to create a dynamic, streamlined workflow that was easily completed by Mine Geologists in accordance with daily production duties. Geologists are now building rapid implicit models for a range of variables from an integrated data set of logged sulfide estimates and existing assays, spatially constrained by 150 m buffers around active drilling using a unique drill fan identifier flagged during the planning phase. Once the live-implicit models are updated, they are exported for visualisation on field tablets to be used during logging and core checks at the start and end of every shift. To manage the risk of ‘going digital’ interpretation remains at the forefront of the drill section close-out process, with Mine Geologists critically reviewing the finished sections on a standardised template with new learnings wireframed and communicated to stakeholders. The Live Field Model has enabled a step-change in the geological effectiveness of diamond drilling, reducing over – and under-drilling ore-waste at Olympic Dam continuing to push drilling effectiveness towards 20 per cent of intercepts >2 per cent Cu. In addition, upside or risk identified during the proactive management of drilling execution can be rapidly capitalised or mitigated.

Microseismic monitoring is regularly used in the mining and geotechnical industries to provide detailed information about rock mass response to operational activities. This paper implements a variable 3D velocity model (VM) at a North American hard rock mine with the aim of further improving the accuracy of seismic event locations. A collapsing method is also used to help analyse two individual seismic event clusters at another North American hard rock mine. In the first case study, the location accuracy of events is shown to improve by moving from a conventional single VM to a variable 3D VM that accounts for voids and different geological domains. The modal average for the event location accuracy improved from 14 m to 5 m when the 3D VM was used. Additionally, the single VM failed to locate 26 per cent of the seismic events that were located by the 3D VM. In the second case study, the distribution of seismic events was further enhanced by using a collapsing method that highlighted planar structures. The collapsing method was performed on two large event sequences that occurred in close proximity and identified different seismic event distributions. One aftershock sequence aligned along a plane, suggesting an activated structure, while the other large event sequence had a more 3D distribution of events, suggesting a complex stress redistribution on smaller structures.CITATION:Pinnock, I, Collins, D S, Toya, Y and Hosseini, Z, 2016. Iran has had an active mining sector for some 7000 years. Exceptional in terms of its mineral diversity, Iran produces 62 minerals, and is ranked among the world’s 15 most mineral-rich countries. Many people around the world know Iran as one of the major petroleum exporters. Oil and natural gas dominate Iran’s economy, and oil exports provide the principal source of income, contributing more than 80 per cent of foreign exchange earnings. Transformation of Iran from an oil exporter to an independent country to oil has been on the table for many years, even before the Islamic Revolution of 1979. Development of the Iran’s mineral industry is one of the major replacements for petroleum exports. In the last decade, Iran invested billion dollars in the mining and mineral industry sectors and to increase the added value, tried to export processed minerals instead of the raw materials. In accordance with the ‘20-year Perspective 2025’ that targeted by the Supreme Leader, Iran will be a country with the first rank in economy, science and technology in its region. The objectives over this perspective include briefly increasing annual production to 55 Mt of crude steel, 800 000 tonne of copper cathode, 1.5 Mt of aluminium, 200 Mt mineral products, 300 000 tonne of zinc and 5 000 kg of gold. These goals are achievable in normal circumstances, but concurrency of the 20-year Perspective 2025 with commencement of the UN Security Council sanctions against Iran, frustrated objectives of the perspective, at least the ones related to the mining and mineral industry sectors. This paper tries to elaborate the development programs and following challenges for the mining activities of Iran by 2025.

In Colombia, northeast of Antioquia, there is a gold deposit that has produced continuously since the middle of the XIX century, located within mining title RPP-140, property of Gran Colombia Gold Segovia (GCGS) since 2010. Mining materials are taken to the “María Dama” Processing Plant where 1500 tonnes of materials are processed daily. Before 2010, the previous owner of the mining title processed about 600 tpd and directly discharged almost all tailings, given that they had no capacity to put them into final deposits. El Chocho was conceived as a final tailings deposit to store the pulp produced by the processing plant; it was divided into two phases with two dams (upper dam and lower dam) given that the presence of illegal miners at the lower phase impeded a single dam design. A squatter impeded construction of the upper dam; so afterwards, starting at the higher end was necessary (owned by GCGS), building dam 1B to store tailings in pulp; after the squatter returned the lands to the owner (GCGS), construction of tailings dam 1A was required and thus complete construction of dam 1C or the upper dam. While all of this was happening, GCGS decided to acquire a 1500 tpd filter press which currently dehydrates tailings in order to take them to the valley controlled by dam 1A. Construction of dam 1A was designed following the containment wall model, made with geotextile tubes. These improvements generated reduced pressure on renewable natural resources because water is recirculated and less fresh water contributions are required; less pressure is placed on soil, flora and fauna because the area intervened for tailings storage will have a higher storage capacity and, as such, a longer useful life.

Most of the operating steelmaking capacity currently relies on conventional, coal-based steelmaking processes. Currently, direct reduced iron (DRI) is only produced in regions where energy is available at low cost. To align with net-zero emissions goals, steelmaking capacity must transition to loweremissions steelmaking technology. Direct reduction of iron ore will get one of the preferred methods in the future due to its high technology readiness. New reduction technologies include hydrogenbased direct reduction processes. To ensure optimal efficiency during DRI production and to cope with newly developed technologies, processes need to be monitored more frequently and accurate. Traditionally quality control of raw materials and DRI has relied on time consuming physical testing, wet chemistry or the analysis of the elemental composition. The mineralogy of DRI that defines its properties is not frequently monitored. Process monitoring and quality control of DRI is possible by using modern X-ray diffraction (XRD) methods. In addition to the metallic iron content (Femet), metallisation (Metn) and the total carbon content (Ctot), XRD analysis also identifies the overall mineralogical phase composition. This allows additional information about the reduction process and enables fast counteractions on changing raw material mixtures. The benefits of the quantitative determination of the phase composition and the calculation of process critical parameters to produce DRI will be demonstrated with a case study

Roy Hill is a large iron ore mining, processing, railing and port operation in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. Since delivering its first shipments to customers in December 2015, Roy Hill has quickly achieved a 60 Mtpa production rate of lump and fines products. The process plant, principally consisting of wet scrubbing, screening and de-sanding unit processes, was expanded from early 2020 to include operation of a Wet High Intensity Magnetic Separation (WHIMS) Plant. The WHIMS Plant treats tailings to recover approximately 4 Mtpa of ultra-fine (nominally -150 μm) high-grade hematitic concentrate which, after dewatering, is blended into the fines product. Unlike typical hematite concentrates, which consist largely of dense particles with smooth surfaces, the WHIMS concentrate is characterised by very finely microporous hematitic/goethitic particles, reflecting the overall characteristics of the Roy Hill deposit. Detailed test work has been conducted in collaboration with CSIRO to characterise the WHIMS concentrate in terms of its physical and mineralogical properties, and to determine its influence on the granulation and sintering performance of Roy Hill fines – from fundamental/lab-scale and sinterpot perspectives. The results demonstrate that blending of the high-grade hematitic Roy Hill WHIMS concentrate into the fines product can maintain overall sinter quality and positively influence granulation and sinter melt formation, as well as Fe grade.
