Standard free energy and standard enthalpy changes as a function of temperature have been calculated for the chlorination reactions of different oxides constituting columbite and tantalite. The tallies of standard lee-energy change (F) indicate the possibility of pvefeential chlorination of different oxides but the ease 0.f chlorination of columbium pentoxide at about 250°C and the chlorinating tendency of columbium pentachloride in promoting the chlorination of tantalum and other metal oxides, p7-evetzt the separation of columbiu?n and tantalum from other oxides and pom each othel.. It is likely that low temperatuves of chlorination and continuous 1err2oval of columbium pentachloride from the ..eaction zone may help partial separation of columbium from tantalum as well as from titanium. COLUMBIUM (niobium) and tantalum metals, their alloys and interstitial compounds are finding extensive uses in nuclear reactors and high-temperature equipment.la-3 These metals also find uses in chemical process plants, electrical rectifiers and capacitors and as "getters" in electronic tubes.la With the development of Kroll process of reduction of volatilized titanium tetrachloride by magnesium for the production of titanium metal, chlorine metallurgy is receiving greater attention. Chlorine metallurgy has several advantages, the foremost amongst them are: the ease of chloride formation, separation of the different constituents of minerals by selective chlorination, and the reduction of the chlorides in vapor phase to the respective metals. Recently, Si-bert, Kolk, and Steinberg4 have considered a number of methods for the preparation of columbium metal and the most promising is found to be the halide reduction. Since the minerals columbite and tantalite are comparatively abundant in nature, the future of the metallurgical processes depends on the utilization of these minerals for the production of columbium and tantalum chlorides by chlorination. In this paper, an attempt has been made to interpret thermodynamically the chlorination of individual oxides constituting columbite and tantalite, with the help of the recent thermodynamic data.5-8 For this purpose, standard free energy and standard enthalpy changes of the chlorination reactions of the oxides with chlorine, both in absence and presence of carbon as the reductant, have been calculated as a function of temperature and represented graphically. Similar calculations for the reactions employing carbon tetrachloride and carbonyl chloride as chlorinating agents have also been incorporated in this paper. REPORTED WORK ON CHLORINATION Cuvelliezg has patented a process for the separation of columbium and tantalum from their concentrate, wherein 75 pct Cb05 is claimed to be chlorinated at 1050°C in the course of 7 hr using chlorine or chlorine containing nonreducing gases, the products of reaction being CbC1, or CbOC1,. At this temperature, Ta,05 is claimed to remain unaffected. It is further claimed1° that at higher temperatures, the proportion of Ta205 chlorinated increases while that of Cb205 diminishes. During the studies on the action of chlorine on individual metal oxides, Kangro and Jahn" have observed that Ta,05 is not chlorinated even at 1200" in the stream of chlorine, while 75 pct of Cb,05 is converted into CbOC1, around 900 to 1100°C. During 1914 and 1915, extensive experiments were conducted at the concentrator of The Detroit Copper Mining Co. of Arizona, at Morenci, Ariz., in order to test the relative grinding efficiencies of the Marathon, the Chilean and the Hardinge Mills. The Marathon mill used in the experiments was the first one ever built by the manufacturers; and since this was the first time that it was given a thorough tryout, with such remarkable results, the data have been assembled in the following paper and submitted in the interests of the milling profession. Description of the Flow Sheet The concentrator flow sheet, as it existed at the time of these tests, is shown in Fig. 1. The total mill feed, as delivered from the crushing plant, had as its maximum size 1-in. material. This material was screened dry on Cole Zig-Zag screens fitted with 4-mesh openings; the oversize going to one pair of coarse rolls, the undersize to five Wilfley tables fitted with Butchart National riffles. The coarse-roll product was elevated and screened wet on Zig-Zag screens fitted with 4-mesh openings, the undersize going to the five tables mentioned above and the oversize to one pair of fine rolls. The fine-roll product was elevated and screened together with the coarse-roll product; so that, before any concentrating operations took place, the total mill feed was reduced to pass a 4-mesh screen. After concentration on Butchart-riffled tables, the tailings from these tables passed to de-sliming hoppers, where two products were formed, viz., an overflow and a discharge. The discharge constituted the feed for the Chilean mills. It contained 16 per cent. slime (—200 mesh) and 3 parts of water to 1 of solids. Growth of the Society When the Institute was born in May, 1871, it was given the name American Institute of Mining Engineers. Yet from its conception a few months earlier, its genetic code clearly carried the message that metallurgy was equal in importance to mining. Thus, the "call" for the initial meeting, which was sent out in April of that year by three mining engineers, Eckley B. Coxe, R. P. Rothwell and Martin Coryell, gave this first objective of the proposed organization as: "the more economic production of the useful minerals and metals." And this call concluded: "Anyone who may have devoted himself to a particular subject connected with either mining or metallurgy, and who may be possessed of new facts in reference to it, would greatly aid in furthering the objects of the proposed association by preparing a paper giving the results of his experience." In response to this call, a group of 22 men assembled in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., for a 3-day meeting beginning May 16, 1871. On the first day, a set of 20 "Rules" was adopted, of which Number 8 read, in part: "The words mining engineers in these rules comprehend engineers connected with mining and metallurgy." On the second day, 18 officers were elected, of whom nine were not present. Moreover, as if to emphasize that the words about metallurgists were to be taken seriously, one of those elected in absentia was the president, David Thomas, a Welshman who had founded the Thomas Iron Co. and who built the first anthracite-fired, hot-blast furnace in this country. The second meeting of the Institute, held in Bethlehem, Pa., in August, had a more metallurgical flavor, and the third meeting, in November, was held in what was then one of the great steel-making centers of the country - Troy, N. Y. This was the home of the Albany and Rensselaer Iron and Steel Co., which held the American rights to Bessemer7s machinery patents. And it was here that the great American steel master, Alexander L. Holley, carried out a series of experiments that led to improvements in the design and method of operation of the Bessemer vessels. It was at this meeting that Holley and Henry Marion Howe, then a "student" at the Albany and Rensselaer plant, were admitted to membership. Carbon in pig iron is not only essential but, ordinarily, it is the most abundant metalloid present; iron without carbon could not be pig iron. Carbon in pig iron has been accepted, but seldom specified. How it gets into the pig iron as it is being smelted in the blast furnace, and why just about so much of it enters into the pig iron in certain blast furnaces, and more of it,; or less of it, enters the pig iron in other blast furnaces, or in the same blast furnace under varying conditions, are problems that have not yet been satisfactorily solved. During my own practical blast-furnace experience, I collected analyses of pig iron, including the graphitic and combined carbon, and recorded them in reference to the percentage of silicon present, having in mind the generally accepted explanation that "silicon drove out the carbon." To this actual experience, I have added some analyses given to me by J. B. Rogers, who was superintendent of the blast furnaces of the Ashland Iron & Mining Co., Ashland, Ky., and was making "silvery iron" at the time. These analyses are shown in Table 1. The analyses do not tell the whole story, but they show that with Pocahontas beehive coke, the total carbon was generally high. The data relating to the composition of the slag are lacking but my own customary practice was to have a rather basic slag. During my experience in making pig iron for the Bessemer and open-hearth departments, there were times when the steel men would complain about some mysterious quality in the pig iron that caused bad steel, in spite of the fact that the percentages of silicon, sulfur, phosphorus and manganese were within the specifications. Many reasons were advanced for this undetermined "poison" in the pig iron, but the favorite one offered by the steel men was that the blast-furnace man had "oxidized" the pig iron at the tuyeres in his eagerness to get big production and low cost. To these complaints of the users of steel-making pig irons were added those of the gray iron-foundry men and the malleable iron men. These groups are unaninlous in their conclusions that the trouble lies with the blast-furnace men; but there is not yet any harmonious conclusion as to the exact cause and remedy.

Petroleum occurs, in nature, as a fluid saturating the pore spaces between the grains of porous rocks or aggregations of rock particles such as sand, sandstone, conglomerate, shale, limestone, etc. The oil, under the influence of gas pressure, hydrostatic pressure, gravity, earth pressure, and, perhaps, other natural forces, is caused to flow through the porous "reservoir rock1' into wells penetrating the stratum in which the oil occurs. The principal moving force is the pressure of dissolved or occluded natural gas within the oil, though this force is assisted by gravity and by the hydrostatic or buoyant pressure of ground water about the edges of the "pool." The wells, providing outlets to the surface, are centers of reduced pressure and the flow of rock fluids into a particular well is usually an expression of the difference in pressure existing between the space within the well and that of the stored oil within the reservoir rock. The greater this differential pressure, the more rapidly will oil flow from the source rock into the well. Opposing movement of the oil from the reservoir rock into the well are certain natural forces related to the rock structure, such as pore friction and capillarity, and certain others related to the physical properties of the oil, such as viscosity and adhesion. The differential pressure between the well and the boundaries of the area drained by it must be sufficient to overcome the forces opposing flow if there is to be movement of oil into the well. If by any device the resistance to movement of the oil may be reduced, the oil will flow into the well at a more rapid rate and the effective area of drainage will be increased.

UP to the present, there has been no large coal-producing industry in any of the South American countries. Since colonial times, the great mineral and agricultural wealth of that continent has led the people to activities other than the development of manufacturing industries based on coal; and climatic conditions are such that there has been very little demand for solid domestic fuel. However, there are extensive and widely distributed reserves of coal in South America that would make the development of a modern coal industry feasible. That factor is of the utmost significance now, when it is believed that the South American countries are entering the pioneer phase of a broad industrial development. Coal Fields Great areas of coal-bearing formations of Cretaceous and Tertiary ages occur generally throughout the Andean uplift and extend into the coastal range of the Caribbean region far east of Caracas. Thus the west coast countries have adequate reserves of coal, which include a wide range of types and classes. In the eastern part of South America, east of the Cordillera, as in North America, the coal measures are of Carboniferous and Permocarboniferous ages. The principal known deposits in this area are in the southern States of Brazil. Permocarboniferous coals ranging in rank from lignitic to anthracitic are found in the States of Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, Parana and Sao Paulo. In the great.interior plateau of Brazil, south of the Amazon River, are extensive areas of Carboniferous strata that may contain coal deposits. There are widely scattered reports of findings of coal in' wells and stream beds in northern Piaui and Goias. In the Rio Fresco Valley, explorers have observed outcrops of two beds of anthracite and have brought to Rio de Janeiro samples from these beds. The Fresco is a tributary of the Xingu River that enters the Amazon from the south, but coal could not be shipped by water since the Rio Fresco area is in the upper part of the Xingu Valley, and there is a formidable series of rapids between that area and the lower level of the Amazon River basin. It is doubtful if coal deposits in this general area will be of economic importance for many years to come. Fig. 1 shows the general location of known coal fields of South America that have been explored sufficiently to indicate the presence of workable reserves. The coal deposits of the Andean region are similar in occurrence and general characteristics, as well as in age, to the coals of the Rocky Mountain region of North America. The exact date of man's first use of coal is lost in antiquity. The discovery that certain black rock would burn was undoubtedly accidental and probably occurred independently and many times in the world over thousands of years. It is quite likely that these independent discoveries were made when primitive man chanced to build camp fires on exposed ledges of a black rock, then was amazed when it caught fire. The Chinese recorded the use of coal 1100 yearn before the Christian Era and from the Bible we learn that King Solomon was familiar with coal in what is now Syria. In Wales, there is evidence that the Bronze Age people used coal for funeral pyres, and it is known that the Romans used this fuel. There are other ancient references. So the knowledge that coal would burn, and even some uses of that knowledge, go back thousands of years. However, practical and consistent use of coal seems to date to England in the Middle Ages. COAL IN AMERICA In the Americas, there is evidence here and there of occasional use by the Indians. However, the first recorded discovery of coal, in what is now the US, was by French explorers, who reported an outcrop exposure on the Illinois River in 1679. Following this, other discoveries were made by French and British explorers, but the first recorded actual usage was in Virginia in 1702, where a French settler was granted permission to use coal for his forge. Earliest recorded commercial mining was in 1750, from the James River coaEeld near Richmond, VA, a deposit now abandoned. Besides local consumption from this field, shipments were made to Philadelphia, New Pork, and Boston. During the Revolution this coal was of impor- tance in the manufacture of shot and shell; so important, in fact, that the British sent an expedition in 1781 to destroy the iron works and

A radioactive tracer method and a size-discretized, mass balance model are formulated and demonstrated in a feasibility experiment for the determination of crystal growth rates in MSMPR crystallizers. The system studied is aqueous KN03 with K-42 as the radioactive tracer. The results indicate that the method should prove to be very valuable for this application, particularly when systems exhibiting size-dependent growth rates are of interest. An indicated refinement to the tracer method is the simultaneous use of an additional tracer in the liquid to determine the amount of radioactivity from the liquid that is adsorbed on the samples of filtered crystals.

LOADING efficiency depends on cycle capacity of the loader, conditions of the mine, and mine organization. Cost of operation is the final criterion. Two types of loaders are analyzed-the boom shovel and the tractor-excavator. Studies were made in an open pit at Kimberley, Nev., where shovels are the production units and the tractor- excavator is a clean-up loader. The report deals mainly with the analysis of cycle and output. Problems of pit organization are not acute. (Other studies included in the original report and omitted here covered tractor-excavator application underground.)

When rock is subjected to a load it is deformed. Ordinarily this is observed in a mine as the displacement of one point with respect to another-the deflection of the roof, which may be observed as a convergence between roof and floor; or the extrusion of material from the rib, which may be observed as a decrease of the distance between the rib and the post of a timber set. The effect of excessive pressure may be a rockburst if the rock is strong, or it may be "squeezing" ground if the rock is "soft". Some desirable effects of high stress (high in relation to strength) are the caving of roof in a longwall mining operation, the caving of ore in block caving, and the decrease in mechanical energy required to break down the mineral seam in a retreating pillar-robbing operation. In any case, whether the observable effect of rock load is desirable or undesirable, it is a displacement, and depends on the following four factors:

The modern process and plant for the precipitation of gold from chlorine solutions, by sulphurous acid gas and hydrogen sulphide, differ materially from the older methods of precipitating with sulphate of iron. The chemical process and its applicability, as carried out in the Golden Reward chlorination-works at Deadwood, S. D., was described and discussed in the Engineering and Mining Journal, of New York, for February 14, and March 21, 1891. I purpose to give, in this paper, the details of construction from a general standpoint—the particular arrangement, most suitable to each case, depending, of course, upon local conditions. The accompanying sketch shows the arrangement. The plant consists of a wooden, lead-lined tank, in which the chlorine solution is precipitated; apparatus for the production of the precipitants, sulphurous acid and hydrogen sulphide; and a pressure-tank and filter-press for the collection and filtration of the precipitated gold-sulphides. These parts and arrangements are, in general, those which I employed in the Deadwood chlorinationworks, and which have proved practically successful, more than $100,000 worth of gold having been already precipitated by this method. In the construction of the generator and pressure-tank I have made, however, a few slight changes. 1. The Precipitating-Tank. The exact dimensions of this tank are not of much importance. A horizontal area of 10 x 12 feet and a height of 12 feet, holding about 7000 gallons of solution, is a good size. As the amount of attention and care required to precipitate the solution in a precipitatingtank is independent of the size of the vessel, there is economy in tanks of large capacity. Square tanks are more advantageous than round ones, because they need less floor-space, and at the same time are cheaper in construction. These tanks are made of common 2inch pine boards and 12 x 12-inch timber. They are well-bolted,

Twenty-nine laboratory steels were studied to determine the effects of composition and ferrite grain size on drop-weight and Charpy V-notch transition temperatures. The experimental steels covered the following ranges in composition.. 0.10 to 0.32 pct C, 0.30 to 1.31 pct Mn, 0.02 to 0.43 pct Si, md nil to 0.136 pct acid-soluble Al. Although most of the data were obtained on hot-rolled samples, some plates were heat-treated in order to cover a wider range in ferrite grain size. The experimental data were used for a multiple-correlation analysis conducted with the aid of an electronic computer. The study showed that carbon raises and that manganese, silicon, aluminum, and finer ferrite grains lower both drop-weight and Charpy transition temperatures. Quantitatively, variations in composition and grain size have a more marked effect on V15 Charpy transition temperatures than on the drop-weight transition temperature. Useful correlations were found between transition temperatures in drop-weight tests and those defined by seven different criteria for Charpy tests. Evidence was accumulated that the conditions ordinarily used for drop-weight tests are more severe for 1-1/4-in. -thick plate than for 5/8- to 1-in. -thickplate. PROJECT SR-151, to study quantitatively the effects of metallurgical variables on performance in the drop-weight test, was established by the Ship Structure Committee late in 1958 on recommendation of the National Academy of Sciences, National Research Council. This project was initiated as a result of the increasing use of the drop-weight (nil-ductility) test in predicting the ductile-to-brittle behavior of steel. Qualitative data indicated the drop-weight was not as sensitive to metallurgical variables as the Charpy V-notch test. Furthermore, the available information indicated that the drop-weight test did not show the superiority of killed steels over semikilled steels reflected by Charpy tests. This difference in sensitivity to brittle fracture is considered important because the drop-weight transition temperature has been reported1 to correlate better with service-temperature failures than the V-notch test does at a constant energy level. Therefore, this project was concerned with establishing quantitatively the effects of metallurgical variables in the drop-weight test. For comparison, Charpy V-notch data were obtained for the steels investigated. This paper summarizes the results of the investigation. Most of the steels used for the study were made and processed in the laboratory. However, some tests were also made on commercial killed steels available from Project SR-139 (SSC-141). During the course of the investigation, data were obtained on the effects of carbon, silicon, manganese, and aluminum on transition temperatures of drop-weight and Charpy specimens. In addition, the effects of heat treatment which changed the ferrite grain size and the transition temperatures were also investigated. Finally a few exploratory studies were made on commercial killed steels to evaluate the effects of plate thickness, grain size, and heat treatment on the performance of drop-weight specimens. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Preparation of Materials. A total of twenty-nine 500-lb induction-furnace heats were made and processed in the laboratory for the investigation. Carbon, manganese, silicon, and aluminum contents were systematically varied. Melting and rolling techniques proven satisfactory in a previous project2 were used as a guide for the current investigation. Composition. The composition of the twenty-nine laboratory heats made for this project are given in Table I. The steels are divided into three groups. The first group consists of ten aluminum-killed steels similar in composition to Class C ship-plate steel. The second group consists of ten semikilled or Class B type steels. In both of these groups the carbon and manganese contents were intentionally varied over a wide range. This wide range in composition was helpful in obtaining quantitative data from a limited number of steels. The primary purposes of these two groups of steels was to determine the effects of carbon, manganese, and deoxidation practice. In addition, one steel in each group (Steels 2-2 and 9-2) were made about 1 year after the start of the program in order to check consistency of melting practice. The third group of nine steels listed in Table I was intended for studies on the effects of silicon and aluminum. The strengthening effects of hydroxide and synthetic plastic films in the creep of cadmium crystals were studied. The results were broadly consistent with the naive mechanical model. The dislocation-film reactions and the significance of the macroscopic stresses associated with certain films are discussed in the paper. ALTHOUGH a number of studies have been made of the strengthening of metal single crystals produced by surface films usually less than Ir in thickness, the mechanisms underlying this phenomenon are still not well established. Roscoe' first noted the critical shear stress and the stress-strain curve of cadmium-crystal wires to be raised markedly by the presence of oxide films. Subsequent investigators2-' have confirmed the effect for several metals and films including a number of plated poly-crystalline metal films. Harper and Cottrel1" with a thin film on zinc presumed to have formed as a result of etching and washing treatments) did not detect a strengthening at a rate of extension of 10 ' sec-' although at lo-' sec-' the film raised the flow stress by 7 pct at 0.0005 extension and by 22 pct at 0.01. The marked strengthening at moderate strains thus appeared to be the result of a dynamical effect dependent on the rate and amount of plastic flow. Other observations'. " are consistent with this view. The large effects of films on the tensile creep rate of single crystals were demonstrated when the observation of Andrade and Randall," that the creep rate of cadmium crystals increased on immersion in aaueous solutions of certain cadmium salts. was shown' * to hold only when a film was present initially and was explained by the attack of the solution on the film and the removal of its strengthening effect. Changes in the creep rate interpretable in terms of the removal or formation of various films have been observed by other investigators.3,8,10,31 Certain other experiments have been reported in which surface films or liquid environments have affected the plastic behavior of metals, but these are not within the scope of the present work which deals with the effect of solid films on single-crystal slip. Possible Mechanisms—The film does not significantly reduce the load on the crystal in the elastic range (the elastic moduli of film and crystal are not too greatly different and the area of the film is so small that its share of the load is negligible) so that the initial operation of internal Frank-Read sources is not affected. However, as Fisher" has pointed out, a source terminating on the crystal surface requires only half the critical stress for activation as an internal source of the same length and a relatively strong film (even a very thin one) would pin the free ends of the surface sources so that, if surface sources are responsible for plastic flow in a clean crystal. such a film would increase by roughly a factor of 2 the stress necessary for generation of dislocation loops at a given rate. The other general possibility is that the film resists the passage to the crystal surface of internally generated dislocations. If the film is adherent and if the specimen is to exhibit slip of the same general character as a film-free specimen, the film must deform or fail in shear at the active slip planes. The naive mechanical model, where shear-stress relaxation across the active slip plane in the metal transfers load to the film until it deforms and slip can

The influence of various elements in retarding or accelerating the absorption of carbon during the process of carburization is fairly well known. In general those elements which form carbides accelerate the absorption, while those which do not retard it. It has sometimes been wrongly stated that those elements which raise the temperature of the critical range increase the absorption, while those which lower this temperature decrease it. Silicon is a notable exception to this rule, for its influence is to raise the critical range but to lower the absorption of carbon. Some elements which do not form carbides have no apparent influence upon the absorption rate. Carbon itself retards the absorption rate. With a view to obtaining more exact data upon the subject the following experiments were undertaken: 208 steels of different chemical composition were selected to represent most of the types of modern constructional steels. Specimens 2 in. in diameter and 9 in. in length were weighed to milligrams. They were then packed in the special carburizing box shown in Fig. 1, and kept in the furnace for 10 hours at a temperature of 900' C. A duplicate experiment was conducted at 1,000° C. At equal intervals of time the box was rotated in the furnace so that two complete revolutions were made in the 10 hours. This precaution was taken to neutralize as much as possible any effect of unequal heating. At the end of the 10 hours the box was allowed to cool in the furnace with the doors open. The specimens were then weighed again and the increased weight (carbon) determined. In the following table are given the analyses of the various steels, together with the increased weight of carbon expressed in milligrams.

Over the last several years, unfavorable economic and political pressures on open-pit mining have placed the industry in a generally defensive position. As a consequence, there have been changes in the traditional organizational and production methods to increase operating efficiency. For example, staff groups that were once used almost exclusively for production support are now being organized as mining/environmental specialists. These specialized groups are responsible for obtaining mining permits and insuring compliance with existing permit requirements. Permit issurance and renewal continues to grow as a major budget item in open-pit operations.

The stress associated with the high-dislocation layer at the surface of deformed aluminum crystals was measured by progressively polishing the specimen and determining the change in the initial flow stress when the specimen was reloaded. This surface stress increased linearly with strain in the Stage II and Stage III region. The depth to which the high-dislocation layer extends was found to be 0.0025 in. The influence of the surface layer on Stage I is discussed and it is shown that Stage I ends when, on the secondary slip system, the difference between the applied stress and the opposing stress due to the surface layer is equal to the critical resolved shear stress. In previous papers'-3 it was shown that the surface exerts a pronounced effect on the plastic-flow characteristics of metals. For fcc metals it was possible to increase the extent and decrease the slope of Stages I and II and decrease the work-hardening coefficient of Stage II by removing the surface of the specimen continuously during the deformation process.2,3 More recently,L it was shown that the activation energy for plastic deformation and the activated volume were also influenced by the surface. These changes were related to the existence of a high concentration of dislocations in the region near the surface of the deformed specimen and it was concluded' that the effective stress, T, acting on a dislocation was T = Ta-Ti-Ts [1] where 7, is the applied shear stress, Tj is the internal stress, and TS is the stress associated with the surface region containing the high concentration of dislocations. From Eq. [I] it is seen that the effective stress, 7, acting on a dislocation is a function of 7,. Therefore 7, becomes important in any description of the work-hardened state. In this paper the value of 7, as a function of strain and its variation with depth are reported for aluminum single crystals. In particular, it will be shown that the end of Stage I occurs when the net stress, 7, on the secondary slip system is equal to the critical resolved shear stress. To measure Ts, single crystals of aluminum were deformed in tension to various strains, whereupon the load was removed and a known amount of metal was removed by electrolytic polishing. The differ- ence between the final flow stress before the specimen was unloaded and the initial flow stress upon reloading is designated as ?Tp and is the decrease in the stress due to the removal of the surface layer in whole or in part. The value for Tp is taken equal to -Ts. EXPERIMENT PROCEDURE The details of the tensile apparatus, method of electrolytic polishing, and crystal preparation were the same as those used previously,1"3 The single crystals were 1/8 by 1/8 in. in cross section with a 3-in. gage length. The initial purity of the aluminum was 99.997 pet. The specimens were held in vacuo at temperatures 50°C below their melting points for 16 hr and furnace-cooled. Just prior to the application of the tensile stress the specimens were electrolytically polished to remove 0.004 in. from the thickness. This latter operation was conducted after the specimen was placed in the tensile apparatus. The tensile tests were conducted at a strain rate, i, of 10"5 sec-' and a temperature of 3°C. The aluminum crystals used for the determination of 7, are designated A1-3-12 and A1-116. The orientation of the various crystals used throughout the investigation is shown in Fig. 1. At the turn of the century, 90% of the energy output in the United States was generated by coal, and Pennsylvania was the ranking producer of this fuel. With the huge resources of easily accessible coal found by its early settlers, the Commonwealth was the nation's chief powerhouse for nearly 100 years. In 1928 alone, Pennsylvania mined a billion dollars' worth of coal-or enough to fill a train reaching more than twice around the world at the State's latitude. Coal constituted nearly 67% of the freight of Pennsylvania and was responsible for the State's $4-billion iron and steel industry. Pennsylvania was slow to take up its position as the greatest coal-producing state in the union, but the knowledge of its coal assets was not slow in accumulating. In fact, long before the white man arrived, the Indians were aware that many of the hills were underlain by black stones that would burn. But awareness was not enough. The early Pennsylvania settlers confined themselves to the southeastern corner of the State and had little need or concern for resources further inland.

To separate minerals on a small scale according to their specific gravity, heavy liquids are used, but because of high costs and health hazards they cannot be used in large scale plants. In order to substitute heavy liquids, finely ground solids like magnetite and ferrosilicon mixed with water and clay for the required specific gravity are employed. The clay present in the medium acts as a stabilizing agent since the coarse heavy media solids would sink very fast to the bottom of the container if they were mixed only in water. The optimum amount of clay varies for different processes, but it is generally between 3-6% by weight concentration of solids. As the pseudo-plastic nature of polymer solutions has excellent suspending properties, investigations were conducted at the Institute of Mineral Research to ascertain whether polymers could be used commercially as suspending agents for finely ground heavy media.
