FOR the benefit of those readers who may not be in close touch with present practices in the geophysical prospecting for ore, brief reference will fiat be made to the advantages and shortcomings of the methods to be discussed. Magnetic and electric methods are generally accepted as the most useful for ore prospecting. By magnetic methods, magnetic intensities that are not normal may be recorded and outlined. From these can he located concentrations of such highly magnetic minerals as magnetite or pyrrhotite, which sometimes occur in such large masses that they are of economic value in themselves. More often. however, these magnetic min¬erals are associated with others, such as copper, zinc, lead, gold, and silver, which, if existing in sufficient concentration and quantity, may constitute valuable ore bodies. It is therefore only when pyrrhotite and magnetite are present in these bodies that the magnetic method can be used to indicate their presence.

The oxidation of pyritic sulphur associated with coal is important for the following reasons: 1. It is the predominant cause for the formation of acid mine drainage issuing from bituminous coal seams. This drainage pollutes the streams in coal regions, making the water unfit for industrial purposes and causing the disappearance of fish and wild life. As a consequence the movement of industry and especially recreational industry, so important to the population of these areas as an alternative means of livelihood, is impeded. 2. It is instrumental in effecting a series of reactions, which bring about the degradation and ultimately result in the spontaneous combustion of bituminous coal in storage. 3. It contributes to the breaking and shattering of the coal structure and is one of the causes of roof falls and floor lifts in mines. 4. It is the primary cause of the many nuisances associated with gob piles and the refuse of cleaning plants. 5. Its proper control and application might possibly be employed in the preparation of coal to reduce the inorganic sulphur content. The research that has been conducted on the oxidation of the various forms of iron sulphides is extensive and the literature voluminous. Nevertheless, few efforts have been made to determine experimentally and with some precision the mechanism of the reaction under the conditions of its occurrence in bituminous coal mines. It has generally been accepted that the oxidation of pyritic sulphur proceeds according to the reaction 2FeS2 + 2H2O + 7O2 ? 2FeSO4 + 2H2SO4 [1] The ferrous sulphate in the drainage streams is further oxidized by air to produce ferric hydroxide and more acid. Yet the literature fails to disclose any pertinent investigation on the mechanism of this reaction. The present contribution is concerned primarily with this aspect of the problem and while the work to be reported is not yet complete, it has yielded results from which interesting and significant conclusions may be drawn.

In the study of the properties of rutile pigments it became apparent several years ago that certain physical and optical properties could not be determined on particles of pigmentary size. Since reflected light is the dominant type which reaches the eye from small particles, the true color of pure rutile was not known. Most rutile pigments are acicular in habit, elongated parallel to the "c" axis. It was considered important to know the nature and tone of light transmitted, for example, by a basal plate. Further, as shown by spectrophotometric curves, there is a very strong absorption of light of 4000 k as measured on particles with random orientation. It would be interesting to see whether this absorption position varied with predetermined and selected orientations. Also, since the behavior of titanium pigments in a vehicle is important, a knowledge of the surface wettability of single crystals by various media should prove very fruitful. Finally, the optical properties of rutile are such that it should show, in a single pure crystal, greater fire and brilliance than the diamond. Mineralogists had long speculated that this would be the case and curiosity was strong to produce a single crystal large enough to cut.

(Presented at a Meeting of the Spokane Local Section of the Institute, Feb. 17, 1912, and accepted for publication in the Bulletin. ) WHILE I am not at the present time engaged in active mine-management, my duties permit of extensive study and examination of many mines, mills, and reduction-works in various places throughout the United States. Being much interested in efficiency-work in general, and an ardent reader of writings on this subject by Frederick W. Taylor and others, as applied to manufacturing-plants, and having served my apprenticeship from mucking to the engineering design of ore-dressing and underground plants, I hope that this paper will lead others to investigate the field more fully, to the improvement of general mine- and mill-operations, as well as the advancement, intellectually, physically, and financially, of the employee and his relations with the employer. If a man who is prepared to look closely and observe broadly starts in Canada and zig-zags from camp to camp to southern Mexico, taking time casually to inspect mines, mills, and smelters, he will be pitifully impressed by the great difference in customs, and the general waste of labor, time, and money throughout the country. He will so seldom observe a dollar's worth of results given in exchange for a dollar spent that he will form a poor opinion of operating-efficiency and management. This highly-scientific department, requiring an amount of skill and executive ability equaled in few, if any, of the professions, certainly falls short of the standard established in our greater manufacturing industries. It is easily said that this is due to the diversity of conditions in mining, milling, and smelting. But on second view it must be admitted that there is room for tremendous improvements in nearly every mining-organization. The term "mineral economics" is applied to a wide range of activities in the mineral industries. Earlier chapters have described the application of economic concepts to the mineral industries-supply, demand, conservation, tariffs, etc. The solution of mineral economics problems is often assisted by the application of quantitative methods. The purpose of this chapter is to describe a number of quantitative methods-econometric, operations research, and management science techniques-which find application in the analysis of mineral economics problems. These methods include input-output analysis, trend analysis, forecasting techniques, simulation, multivariate statistical analysis, mathematical programming, and market research techniques. The purpose of this introductory section is to provide a mineral economics framework for the application of these methods. Mineral economics is a subdivision of economics that is justified by a sufficient number of economic problems in the mineral industry requiring special experience and an unusual combination of skills. These problems are concerned with the conversion of minerals as geologic resources to minerals as economic goods. The mineral conversion process is outlined in Fig. 8.A.1. The physical occurrence of mineral deposits in nature and the market demand for mineral products in the economy provide the basic stimuli. The conversion process embodies a number of sequential stages-exploration, the development of mineral deposits, and mineral processing facilities and, consequently, productive activity to supply market demand. In the victories of peace as well as of war, the science of engineering has played a prominent, if, indeed, not the leading part. While it might be interesting, and food for profitable thought, to trace the development of engineering from early times in its bearings upon the social betterment of mankind, it will be sufficient on the present occasion to suggest a few thoughts that it is hoped will aid the unprofessional listener to an appreciative consideration of the subject-matter laid down for to-day's discussion, and possibly lead the professional brother to a higher conception of the profession to which he belongs. Since the advent of the railway era, it is difficult to grasp the sequence of historic events that have led to the wondrous derelopment of mechanical science, making possible the civilization that is our daily boast, and opening up a vista of future intellectual and moral advancement among the nations of the earth, 'before which the imagination becomes hopelessly lost. Even now, looking back over a period of only half a century, we often fail to realize the vast change in the relations of individuals and nations to each other., brought about by the results of those mechanical discoveries which, having made the whole world kin, exercise a resistless levelling influence that bears fruit politically in the spread of republican ideas, and morally in the elevation of the individual through the facilities given to the dissemination of Christian ideas and general intelligence. In this view, it seems almost like a work of supererogation for a body of representative men of one department of that science to which the whole world owe. so much, to meet here at the centre of our national life to plead not only for a practical recognition of the national importance of the work to which their lives are devoted, but also for national aid, on a scale beyond that of private effort, to the end that mechanical science may be carried to a higher plane than ever yet attained, each step on the way being of material benefit to every man, woman, and child in the community. A year ago the authors published a paper on the solubility of sulphur dioxide in molten copper.l The data in that paper agreed closely with that obtained by previous investigators, which, however, did not agree with the theoretical predictions for solubility of triatomic gases of this type. It has generally been assumed that the reaction of solution is: 6Cu(l) + SO2(g) = Cu2S (in Cu) + 2 Cu2O (in Cu) [I] _ (CU2S)(CU2O)2 K = (Cu)6(Pso2) [2] Neglecting the slight change in copper concentration and considering that the concentrations of sulphur and oxygen are both proportional to the volume of gas absorbed, it follows that this volume should be proportional to the cube root of the pressure. It was found that a plot of the volume absorbed versus the cube root of the pressure gave a straight line, but that this line did not pass through the origin. Calculations of the equilibrium constant for the reaction showed that it was fairly constant for pressures above 100 mm. but that actually it approached zero at lower pressures. The conclusion was made therefore that the solubility as determined could not be expressed by Eq. I or by any other simple equation, particularly at low pressures. Other investigators have concluded that the solubility of sulphur dioxide in copper as well as in several copper alloys is more nearly proportional to the square root of the pressure.* Such a conclusion, however, does not satisfactorily account for the results, even when rather complicated mechanisms for the solution are assumed. The highly improbable speculations of Lepp2 and of Schneider and Esch3 based upon hypothetical dissociation pressures of Cu2O and CU2S dissolved in copper illustrate the type of reasoning that has been used to account for the discrepancy. In the discussion of the previous paper, the authors pointed out that the discrepancy might possibly be due to impurities in the copper, although the purest form available was used. Further consideration of the problem suggested that the impurities likely to have the greatest effect on the solubility of so2 in copper were oxygen, sulphur and carbon. Accordingly, further experiments have been made to show the effects of these elements. Experimental Methods The apparatus used for measuring solubility was essentially the same as that shown in the previous paper. However, since it was desired to make measurements at low pressures, a McLeod gauge was added and 6-mm. glass tubing was substituted for the capillary. This increased the "hot volume" considerably but was necessary in order to obtain good vacuums in a reasonable length of time. A mercury diffusion pump was also installed.

RECENT investigations have shown that face-centered cubic metals may deform by twinning. Blewitt, et al' found that at 4.2"K the mode of def~rmation of single crystals of copper changed at large strains and markings formed on (111) planes. Later they- emonstrated by X-ray diffraction and metallography that the markings were twins and showed that favorably oriented single crystals of copper deformed by twinning at 78°K. They also observed twinning in silver and gold deformed at 4.2 and 78°K. Wagner3 obtained evidence for twinning from the peak shape of diffraction lines of silver cold-worked at 78°K, but twins small enough to cause such effects are not likely to be detected metal-lographically. In the work reported here lamellar structures were observed in deformed silver-gold alloys. They appeared to be mechanical twins, but metallography could not establish this conclusively. Their tendency to form depended on strain rate, temperature and composition. Specimens of silver-gold alloys (0 to 83 wt pct Au) were deformed plastically. One set was worked by hammering under liquid nitrogen, at room temperature and at intermediate temperatures. Another set was compressed slowly in liquid nitrogen to the same reductions as those produced by hammering. Tensile specimens (0.015 x 0.120 x 1.5 in.) of various compositions and approximately equal grain size (0.011 to 0.016 cm) were tested at -195°C and at room temperature. In microsections of all specimens deformed by hammering at —195°C thin lamellae appeared, Fig. 1. They were aligned in definite directions in each grain. In some grains they had two orientations. Where lamellae intersected, a displacement was apparent. Near the center of the left margin of Fig. 1 shear has taken place beyond the fully developed intersecting lamella. Many lamellae resembled Neumann bands in alpha iron. They were parallel to one side of triangular etch pits in the matrix (as in Figs. 1 and 2). The individual lamellae were narrow and had little substructure. This suggested that they did not result from concentrated local slip. The shape of etch pits within the lamellae differed from that of pits in the matrix, as can be seen in Fig. 2; this indicated a difference in orientation. Specimens slowly deformed at —195°C contained regions in which the lamellae were clustered. In these specimens some lamellae were bent and presumably had formed before the termination of the deformation. Structures of greater width than the lamellae were also seen.4 More lamellar structures formed on impact than during slow compression to a given reduction. This was true of all compositions. The structures became less abundant with increasing temperature of deformation. None was observed after extension to fracture at room temperature, but they could be pro-

Anhydrite, the second calcium sulphate mineral found in nature, may be broken into its constituents as follows: [ ] PROPERTIES OF GYPSUM AND ANHYDRITE Pure gypsum is colorless to white but various impurities change its color to shades of gray, brown, red, or pink. It has a hardness of 2 in the Mohs scale and can be scratched with the fingernail. The specific gravity of pure gypsum is 2.3 to 2.4, so that rock gypsum, free from moisture, weighs about 145 lb per cu ft. Falls of roof account for over 50% of the fatalities that occur in coal mines in the US. Thus, roof control is one of the more important phases of underground mining. In reality, the control of roof influences the system of mining and is a major determinant of the width and spacing of working places, operations at the mining face, ventilation control, and surface subsidence. Frequently, the control of roof is the largest single cost item. Roof control is a never-ending task, not only at the working face and throughout sections where men are working, but along haulways and air- ways that must be maintained for the life of the mine. This is because roof, even the best of roof, slowly deteriorates, so it must be frequently examined, with corrective support applied when needed. As coal is excavated, stresses are set up in the roof because the previous equilibrium is upset, resulting in pressures that cause fractures and slight movements that are frequently hard to detect. Unless the immediate roof, in the excavated area, is given support by artificial means, it might fall or there might be a succession of falls, varying from a thin scale to several feet, depending on the nature of the top. Exceptions to this are those rare mines, or sections of mines, with hard, strong, nonweathering roof that requires no support. GENERAL CLASSIFICATION OF ROOF There are two broad types of roof as far as support is concerned: the immediate roof above the coal and the main roof. Artificial support for mining purposes is only concerned with the immediate roof as nothing except large blocks of solid coal, or massive concrete, will support the main roof. The immediate roof is generally a few feet thick but can vary from inches to 6.1 m (20 ft) or more. There are examples of where there is no immediate roof as the massive main roof lies directly on the coal

Coal as mined contains varying quantities of inorganic components (mineral matter) which, on combustion, produce the residue known as ash. It has long been realized that the weight of this residue does not equal the weight of the mineral matter originally in the coal, because of the chemical changes that take place during the ashing process. Moreover, the ordinary ash analysis presents the ash as a mixture of oxides with little or no clue to the identity of the mineral species originally present in the coal. It is only for pyritic sulfur that an attempt is made to determine a mineral component. So far as the authors are aware, there are practically no experimental data in the literature as to the percentages of the different mineral species present in coal. The oft-quoted table of Marson and Cobb1 cannot rightly be considered as data, since the authors merely state that the table "shows the probable forms in which these ash constituents exist in coal." In view of the attempts to calculate analyses and determinations of the calorific equivalent of coal to the mineral-matter-free basis, as well as the importance of the mineral species in clinkering, combustion and coking, it seems strange that so few data are available on this phase of coal technology. For example, numerous empirical corrections for use in the scientific classification of coal have been suggested to compensate for the losses from the mineral matter during ignition of the coal to ash. These include multiplication of the ash percentage by various factors such as l 1/10 and 156, the use of the Parr unit coal formula (1.08 A + 22/40 S, where S = total sulfur) as well as certain modifications of the Parr formula that attempt to correct for the organic sulfur present in the coal. DURING the last year or so, with higher prices for gold and silver, many old properties in the West have come back to life. Almost every profitable producer in the old days has been considered, and the reasons for its shut-down investigated. If it seems likely that modern ore-finding, mining, and metallurgical methods, and S35 gold can again put the property on a profitable basis, someone can usually be found to back the venture. Methods of rejuvenation vary with the property, of course, but the following outline of what has been done with one group of mines in Idaho is fairly typical and may be suggestive to others. The Golden Chariot gold-silver properties, near Silver City, consist of seven old mines, working a vein system striking north and south, which had a productive length of some 3500 ft. With the recent advances which have been made in science and technology and the increased use of mathematics in this area, the question of the best mathematics courses for a mining engineer to take is of major importance. The question becomes even more difficult to answer due to the recent increase in the number of different mathematics courses in the last two decades offered by the mathematics departments. Therefore, the National Study of Mathematics Requirements for Scientists and Engineers (NSMRSE) was designed to provide some answers to these questions. Approximately 10,000 scientists and engineers were selected for the Study, These individuals were placed in two categories: (1) The Awards Group, recipients of national honors or awards and those recommended by the members of the Board of Advisors as having national and international reputations in their areas of specialization and (2) The Abstracts Group, persons exceptionally productive in their research, based on the number of journal articles listed in the last five years in the Engineering Index, Scientific and Technological Aerospace Reports, Chemical Abstracts, Biological Abstracts, and the Physics Abstracts. The NSMRSE Course Recommendation Form and the Instruction and Course Content Sheet were constructed with the aid of the Board of Advisors and other consultants. For the Study, 40 courses were selected by the mathematical consultants. In order to make sure that the basic content of the mathematics courses was the same for all respondents, a brief resume of each of the 40 courses was given. The NSMRSE Course Recommendation Form consisted of seven sections. These sections were as follows: Section 1, 38 different specializations; Section 2, orientation of work (applied through theoretical); Section 3, highest degree obtained; Section 4, place of employment (academic, nonacademic); Section 5, administrative capacity (administrative or nonadministrative); Section 6, age groups (five-year intervals). Section 7 contained the 40 courses which were to be marked according to five categories: (1) Course Length, 3 to 36 weeks; (2) Applied-Theoretical Orientation, a five-point scale; (3) Course Level, freshman through graduate; (4) Knowledge of Course; and (5) Use of Course Content in Work. The Analysis The report of the data is based on the replies received from 44 mining engineers. This group was part of the Awards and Abstracts Group for all engineers. The resume of the recommended courses is reported in quintiles (upper fifth to lower fifth), since recommendations of this kind are not precise. The results of the Study are based on recommendations of the most active research men in engineering in the U.S. today; therefore, the reader should realize that these course recommendations represent an upper bound of mathematics requirements for the Ph.D. in both undergraduate and graduate work. Conclusions and Recommendations 1) Mining engineering students who plan to be active research specialists should take all those courses which are "very highly recommended" (80-10070) and "highly recommended" (60-79.9%). Those courses in the upper two quintiles and recommended by most mining engineers are: first-year calculus, third-semester calculus, elementary differential equations, applied statistics, and machine computation. Courses of "moderate recommendation" (40-59.9%) are: vectors, intermediate ordinary differential equations, the first course in partial differential equations, elementary probability, and linear programming. 2) The great majority of mining engineers indicated that they prefer a course which is concerned primarily with applications. Only the standard courses such as first-year college mathematics, calculus, differential equations, and advanced calculus received a recommendation for 50% theory and 50% practice. Therefore, all mathematics courses given to mining engineers should contain many applications and little theory. Engineers in both the applied and the combination (ap-plied-theoretical) groups indicated a definite need for applications in all courses. 3) In general, recommendations were for mathematics courses to be given for short intervals of time such as 3, 6, or 12 weeks. Only the standard courses mentioned previously received the usual one-semester or one-year recommendation. Therefore, it is of value to combine several related courses into a one or two-semester course so that the mining engineering student could acquire important mathematical knowledge at an early date in order to prepare him for his research. 4) There was little use for the newer courses in modern mathematics such as the functional analysis sequence, the modern algebra sequence, and the group theory sequence. In addition, there were uniformly very low recommendations (0-19.9%) for multilinear algebra, complex variables, mathematical logic, special functions, integral equations, approximation theory, analytic mechanics, integral transforms, and geometric algebra. Therefore, these courses should be given a low priority. 5a) Comparisons among mining engineers with different backgrounds showed that the combination ap-plied-theoretical group recommended more mathematics than the applied group. 5b) There was little difference in recommendations between the administrative group and the nonadminis-trative group. 5c) Analysis of age groups showed that those in the lower age groups gave significantly higher recommendations to courses such as the first course in partial dif-
