The methodology used to obtain fly ash subsamples of different sizes is generally based on wet or dry sieving methods. However, the worth of such methods is not certain if the methodology applied is not mentioned in the analytical procedure. After performing a fly ash mechanical dry sieving, the authors compared those results with the ones obtained by laser diffraction on the same samples and found unacceptable discrepancies. A preliminary study of a wet sieving analysis carried out on an economizer fly ash sample showed that this method was more effective than the dry sieving. The importance of standardizing the way samples are handled, pretreated and presented to the instrument of analysis are suggested and interlaboratory reproducibility trials are needed to create a common standard methodology to obtain large amounts of fly ash size fraction subsamples.

This is the final report of work done under contract H0210060 for the U. S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines. This program was to show the feasibility of using plastic liners containing sand and other fillers as a means of roof support in coal and other mines. This laboratory study was conducted in two phases, namely: Phase I, directed toward determining which state-of-the-art resin systems might have utility as a means of roof support in a coal mine, consisted of a canvass of resin manufacturers to learn which resins were available commercially that might have utility for this application. The resins submitted by the manufacturers were evaluated in a number of simple tests to define which of them would be most suitable for roof support use.

Various types of contemporary Deep Mixing Method (DMM) techniques have been used in the United States since 1986. Such techniques owe their origins to Japanese and Scandinavian developments, which began almost three decades ago. The growing demands of urban infrastructure development and rehabilitation have created a very active and rapidly expanding market demand in the United States especially since the early 1990s, and there is a clear need for a new and fundamental review of the surprisingly large number of DMM techniques that are being used domestically, or are available in other parts of the world. Following a summary tracing the historical development of DMM, and a generic classification of applications, the paper provides a review of each of the many different proprietary methods, which the authors have identified during preparation of an international survey funded by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). Data are also provided on commercial aspects of the various DMM techniques worldwide.

A method is described whereby the behavior of the front is approximated when gas is injected into a thick reservoir having reasonably homogeneous properties. The method is applied to the Abqaiq field of Saudi Arabia. The producing member is the Arab-D, a high-permeability calcarenite which has no continuous betlding planes. Field performance indicates the injected gas to be partially miscible with the reservoir oil because gas volume factors experienced are lower than those predicted by the gas law. Eqlrilibril~m calculations confirnz ihis and also show that the volume factor may vary appreciably, depending on the relative quantities of oil and gas in contact in the reservoir; consequently, volutnetric balances are made for the purpose of determining the behavior of the gas volume factor during injection history. The effect of gravity segregation on position and shape of the gas front is approximated by dividing the producing section into three zones vertically and tracing the movement of the average interface in each zone, with counterflow of oil and gas taking place betweell zones behind the front. This results in a gas front that advances more rapidly along the top of [he formation than along the base, producing an "umbrella" effect in cross section that becomes more pronounced as the front progresses. The calculations cover the gas-injection period of Abqaiq field history through 1958, and the position of the gas front is plotted at one-year intervals. Finally, some comparisotls between the calcrlated fronial position and the gas-oil contact as Measured by neutron logs are made. INTRODUCTION Fig. 1 is a structure contour map of the Abqaiq field. For analytical purpcses, the field has been divided into two areas designated A and B, as shown on the map. Gas injection into Area A was begun in early 1954 into two wells located near the crest of the structure on the north-south axis of the anticline. During the period covered by this paper, the average injection rate has been 122 MMscf/D with a maximum sustained rate of 160 MMscf/D. The reservoir pressure has been maintained at 2,450 psig since start of gas injection. The reservoir originally was undersaturated but, prior to pressure maintenance, the pressure was drawn below the bubble point in most of the Area A section, creating an in-place free-gas saturation of 8 per cent at the crest of the structure. The average critical gas saturation is 13 per cent established by laboratcry core tests. That the entire reservoir remained below critical gas saturation prior to gas injection is borne out by the fact that none of the crestal wells have exhibited high gas-oil ratios during production history. The Area A reservoir is a carbonate section about 200-ft thick having average porosity and permeability of the order of 22 per cent and 500 md, respectively. Cameroon continued to enjoy sustained economic growth that began with its independence in 1960. Growth in the gross domestic product (GDP) averaged 2.8% per year during the 1960's and the first half of the 1970's. Starting in 1976 and for the succeeding 10 years, the GDP accelerated rapidly owing to the coming on-stream of Cameroon's small but domestically significant offshore oil industry. In 1985, the GDP grew by 7.8%, but in 1986, it was only up 5.5%. The country's sustained economic growth in dollar terms of gross national product (GNP) per capita reached $1,075 in 1986. The ranking in GNP per capita by the International Monetary Fund put Cameroon in the middle-income category for developing countries. The sustained economic growth rate up to 1986 was due to the injection of income from oil into the economy, but crude oil price reductions in 1986 brought a slowdown. In 1986, crude oil production grew to 200,000 barrels per day, an increase of 8.2% from that of 1985. Most of the oil came from the Société Nationale Elf Aquitaine (SNEA) wells in the multifield Rio del Rey complex. Additional output came from the Moudi Field operated by Compagnie Française des Pétroles S.A. Proven oil reserves in Cameroon were 540 million barrels. At 1986 production rates, and in the absence of further discoveries, Cameroon will have exhausted its recoverable oil reserves by the year 1995. Owing to worldwide crude price reductions, the country's oil income fell 60% between 1985 and 1986, from $1.82 billion2 to $0.72 billion. Cameroon's refinery operator commenced operating the Sonara refinery in 1981 at Point Limboh. Sonara's capacity of 43,000 barrels per day was small by most standards. In 1986, natural gas reserves, estimated at 100 billion cubic meters, were not produced commercially because there were no domestic users. Proposals for a multibillion-dollar liquefied natural gas plant at Kribi had been submitted; however, work on the plant had not commenced.

As argamassas estudadas foram confeccionadas com metacaulim (precursor) ativado com solução composta por hidróxido de potássio e água destilada, e areia normal brasileira. De acordo com os resultados, a resistência aumenta com a diminuição da razão ativador/precursor e com o aumento da molaridade da solução ativadora. Além disso, os valores encontrados condizem com os presentes da literatura e com possíveis aplicações para argamassas de múltiplo uso.

Active geothermal systems occur widely in Sumatra and in the Taupo Volcanic Zone (TVZ) ofNew Zealand. There are also many occurrences of epithermal gold mineralisation in Sumatra, some of which are economic. Minor sub-economic occurrences of gold have been reported in the TVZ but none have yet been mined. There are both similarities and differences in the nature of the active geothermal systems and mineral deposits in Sumatra and New Zealand, which can be systematically related to the tectonic setting. The thicker crust and consequent predominance of silicic volcanism in New Zealand leads to hydrothermal systems which are little eroded and with limited lateral outflows. The systems in Sumatra are of mixed character, with some of the characteristics of those in andesitic island arcs such as Java or the Philippines, e.g. a higher proportion of systems with identifiable acid magmatic volatiles, a greater potential for deep erosion and lateral outflows than in New Zealand; but modified by the more oblique component of subduction and thickened crust so that some are localised in volcano-tectonic depressions and consequently have high piezometric levels of primary hydrothermal fluid. The unusual occurrence of calcic zeolites in veins associated with gold mineralisation in Sumatra is thought to be indicative of æsatelliteÆ boiling zones along de-gassed hydrothermal outflows.

The interpretation of coal seismic data requires a certain precision and accuracy to make the results more reliable. The signature of the seismic wavelet provides a host of valuable geologic information. Subtle features and anomalies, not easily observed in conventional black and white seismic sections, are enhanced through color attribute displays in terms of frequency, amplitude and phase. Coal seam anomalies like sandstone washouts produce a distinct pattern in frequency and amplitude displays due to the change in the net acoustic impedance contrast. Faults produce frequency and amplitude variations due to interference within the Fresnel zone that straddles the fault. The magnitude of displacement is estimated by studying the effects of faults on reflection amplitudes and frequency from computer-generated models.

As far as is known at the present time, important ore occurrences at Mount Isa are restricted to the Urquhart Shale. These occur at Mount Isa itself, and some 13 miles north along strike at the Northern Leases.The primary silver-lead-zinc and copper orebodies occur as adjacent but discretc entities in lithologieally distinct host rocks. The copper orebodies occur in an envelope of "Silica Dolomite", whereas the silver-lead zinc orebodies occur in shale typical of the Urquhart Shale in general.At both Mount Isa and the Northern Leases, secondary lead orebodies occur at thc surface representing primary stratiform silver-lead-zinc sulphide accumulations in the fresh rocks at depth.Secondary copper orebodies are known only at Mount Isa, where they have formed in favourable environments, but unlike the secondary lead orebodies, not in the positions of the former primary mineralization that gave rise to them. The secondary copper is localized in shale remote from the point where the copper was released into solution by weathering. It was derived from very low grade fracture fillings and disseminations of chalcopyrite in the outcropping or suboutcropping crest of the "Silica Dolomite".Primary silver-lead-zinc orebodies arc oxidized without significant transport or secondary enrichment, but secondary copper orebodies arc characterized by considerable transport and extreme secondary enrichment.The original water table stood at approximately 1,150 ft (mine datum) and for the majority of the mine area controlled the base of complete oxidation fairly closely.An oxidized zone approximately 175 ft deep is general in the Urquhart Shale.Structures affecting ground conditions have influenced oxidation and leaching of the silver-lcad-zinc orebodies, and have had effects vital to the formation of secondary copper orebodies.

This paper presents the optimum auxiliary fan(s) location to control air recirculation in dead-end workings where dieselpowered vehicles operate. Investigations were conducted with various secondary fan locations from the dead-end crosscut with varying the intake air quantities using a 30 m3/ s capacity twin 75 kW auxiliary fan and 45 m3/ s capacity twin 110 kW auxiliary fan to control air recirculation and DPM. The results showed that if the drive intake airflow rate matches the fan capacity, air recirculation will occur even when the fan is located 10 m away from the crosscut entry. Results also showed that if the intake drive air quantity was greater than or equal to 150% of fan capacity, no recirculation was observed when the twin 75 kW fan location was at least 5 m and the twin 110 kW fan location was at least 10 m away from the dead-end crosscut access.

Coal seams approximately 7 feet, 9 feet and 20 feet thick at depths of 250, 600 and 1,000 feet respectively were detected using high resolution seismic reflection techniques. Investigation of seismic profiles indicates that good data are required to delineate faulting with only 20 feet of throw but that faulting with 50 feet of vertical displacement can be detected with poor data. Data acquired from dynamite charges fired in water saturated media were clearly superior to that acquired using charges dry tamped in 10 and 20 foot holes.

In 1986 the Bureau of Mines conducted a probability sample survey, Mining Industry Population Survey, to measure such employee characteristics as occupation; principal equipment operated; work location at the mine; present job, present company, and total mining experience; job-related training during the last 2 years; age; sex; race; and education. The population estimates are necessary to properly analyze the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) injury (includes illness and fatality data) statistics; that is, to compare and contrast injury rates for various subpopulations in order to identify those groups that are exhibiting higher than average injury rates. This report uses the survey's results to characterize the U.S. nonmetallic mining workforce from March through September 1986. Similar reports have been prepared for the metallic, stone, and sand and gravel mining industries, as well as for the entire metal and nonmetal mining (includes metallic, stone, sand and gravel, and nonmetallic industries) sector and the cool mining sector.

The Bureau of Mines, through a 4-year program of combined in-house and contract research, has developed the necessary hardware and software technology to provide rugged, reliable automatic fire protection for surface mining mobile equipment. One element of this program was a continuing effort to help foster rapid mining industry acceptance of the technology by keeping end user costs reasonable. This report is an analysis of the economic impact of surface mining mobile equipment fires and the cost benefit of utilizing automatic fire protection systems to abate these losses.

China’s mineral deposits are the result of metallogenic processes associated with the geodynamic evolution of tectonic plates and eventual amalgamation into their modern configuration. The principal tectonic provinces of China comprise the North China Craton, Yangtze Craton, Cathaysia Craton, Tarim block, Altay-Tianshan-Hinggan orogens (part of the Central Asian Orogenic Bel), Central China orogens, Songpan-Ganze orogen and Alpine-Himalayan fold belts, which are part of the huge Tethysides. These tectonic elements are testimony to a complex geological history spanning more than 3000 million years. This contribution will focus on selected areas of the Altay-Tianshan, the fold belts surrounding the North China Craton and Yangtze Craton and the mineral systems along the Ailaoshan-Red River fault zone. Mineral deposits in these provinces include gold, copper, molybdenum, tin, antimony, nickel, platinum group elements, lead and zinc.CITATION:Pirajno, F, 2015. At coal mine working faces, simultaneous application of three basic elements reduces the methane explosion hazard: (1) adequate ventilation, (2) regular monitoring of gas concentrations, and (3) the elimination of ignition sources. This paper reviews the application of these elements in a manner relevant to Chinese coal mines. Adequate ventilation is provided by using the mine entries to convey air for the long distances between the mine portal and the working sections (main ventilation systems) and then using line brattice or ventilation duct (face ventilation systems) to convey air the last hundred meters to the working face where coal is broken and removed. The air quantity provided is enough to safely dilute methane and the air velocity is enough to prevent layering. Gas concentrations are regularly monitored in accordance with regulations using knowledge of the circumstances under which the highest concentrations are likely to be found. Ignition sources are eliminated by ensuring that electrical equipment does not ignite methane, that sparking from cutter picks is minimized, and that smoking by workers is strictly forbidden. Risk-reduction studies using fault-tree analysis have shown that large reductions in explosion risk only result from multiple preventive actions. For example, a ventilation upgrade or a methane monitor upgrade by itself offers risk reductions under 50 pct. A risk reduction of 90 pct. or more would typically require much more. Other studies have shown that the everyday vigilance of those working underground is as important as engineering design.

This paper describes the evaluation of a limit equilibrium model to simulate the behaviour of crush pillars in platinum mines. An analytical model was derived to calculate the residual average pillar stress (APS) values of the crush pillars. The values predicted by this model were compared to the numerical values obtained from TEXAN simulations. In general, the limit equilibrium model appears to be very attractive for simulating pillar failure as the gradual crushing of the outside of the pillar and the transfer of stress to the intact core can be replicated. The value of the TEXAN crush pillar model was further demonstrated by simulating an idealized layout with crush pillars between two adjacent panels. The simulations illustrated that oversized pillars will not crush close to the face and this may lead to seismic failure in the back area. An important finding of the study is that closure measurements may prove to be a very valuable diagnostic measure in crush pillars layouts. Distinct differences in magnitudes of closure were simulated for a scenario where the pillars crush as expected, compared to the scenario where an oversized pillar is left. Experimental closure data collected in a crush pillar stope provided further evidence regarding the value of closure measurements in these layouts.

This volume contains a summary of the results of past analyses on U.S. Bureau of Mines Contract No. 80122061 which are relevant to electromagnetic location in mine rescue situations. The analytical results indicated that detection of a trapped miner equipped with a special transmitter is feasible in most situations. Location of the miner by surface measurements is also generally feasible within certain errors. The feasibility of miner detection and the accuracy of miner location have been examined theoretically for a wide variety of situations. Agreement with experimental results is generally good in cases where measurements are available. Personnel involved in the investigation include J.R. Wait (Principal Investigator), D.A. Hill (Co-Principal Investigator), K.P. Spies, A.Q. Howard, and Lana Slusher (Administrative Assistant).

The Bureau of Mines estimated the remaining lode gold endowment of eight mining districts in Alaska using historic production data. A log-arithmic model of cumulative tonnage of ore processed versus cumulative grade was applied to the following districts: Chichagof, Fairbanks, Homer, Hope-Seward, Juneau, Ketchikan, Prince William Sound, and Willow Creek. To assess the remaining endowment, a computerized production data base was compiled from Bureau records. These data were aggregated in 5-yr intervals for each district. Data were sorted in order of declining grade, and log cumulative grade was plotted against log cumulative tonnage. Linear regression was performed on the data for each district. The linear equation for each curve was used to predict remaining endowment at a limiting mining grade. Based on conservative extrapolation of the grade-tonnage curves, a substantial total endowment of 8,415,100 tr oz of gold remains in the eight districts. The districts with the greatest remaining endowment are the Juneau, Chichagof, Fairbanks, and Willow Creek Districts.

The authors studied small seismic exploration blasts for vibration characteristics and effects on structures in Mexico. Obtained were 267 three-component recordings of ground vibrations and structure responses from 62 test blasts at six single-story masonry structures. Charges were 4.55 kg (10 lb) of Vibrogel expolsive at depths of 20 and 30 meters. Initial blasts were 240 meters distant and proceeded towards the structures to as close as 5 meters. All blasts were in soil media in two basic types of terrain, low saturated areas and upland dry areas. Structural inspections were before, during, and after the test blasts.
