If lead buttons are cupelled under closely controlled conditions in a suitable design of furnace, silver losses during cupellation are given by a simple equation. The effect of copper on these silver losses has been studied and a "copper limit" for cupellation has been determined. Scorification and crucible fusion procedures for copper-bearing materials have been designed so that the lead buttons produced will not contain amounts of copper greater than this determined copper limit. Silver losses during these crucible fusion and scorification procedures are given by the distribution law, and can be calculated. Thus, silver can be determined in copper-bearing materials with a satisfactory degree of accuracy provided that the appropriate corrections for losses are applied to the weight of the silver prill produced.

Y., who presented an exhibit of moving pictures, illustrating the various operations of mining and milling iron ore as carried out at Mineville. Mr. Le Fevre pointed out, as the pictures were run off, the dangers of the various operations, and the precautions that should be taken to avoid or minimize these dangers. . After the exhibition of pictures, the members adjourned to the University Club, where dinner was served. At the close of the dinner and an impromptu recital by Mr. Weeks, the meeting was adjourned. Anisotropic minerals are important constituents of many ores. This group includes both valuable minerals (e.g., molybdenite in Cu-Mo ores) as well as gangue minerals (e.g., talc in platinumbearing sulphide ores in South Africa, graphite in Cu-Ni sulphide ores in Canada, chrysotile in Ni sulphide ores in Australia, and clay minerals in all types of ores). Aqueous suspensions of anisotropic minerals exhibit different properties than suspensions of isotropic minerals. The presence of anisotropic minerals in flotation circuits affects the flotation process.

The ancient city of Guanajuato, the capital of the State of that name, has been built up and sustained chiefly by the milling industry based upon the veins of the Veta Madre and La Luz. It is distant about twelve hours, by rail, from the City of Mexico. Its elevation above the sea is about 6300 ft., and it has a salubrious climate. The population, at the date of my visit in 1891, was estimated at from 80,000 to 100,000 persons. The place is justly celebrated for the antiquity, depth and extent of the mines, the magnitude of the deep shafts, and the enormous total yield of the district in silver and gold, which is comparable with that of the Comstock Lode in the United States. Several important public institutions are located at this center. The State office for the records of claims and of the statistics of mining and production is known as the Deputacion de Mineria. The Mining College, with its fine collection of ores and minerals from the mines of the region, is highly interesting to mineralogists. A mint for the coinage of silver, but not of gold, coins from four to twelve millions of' silver dollars annually. The silver received at the mint is melted in an open-hearth furnace, and is ladled out and cast into long and thin bars, which are rolled down to the proper thickness for the blanks. The bars contain some gold which is not parted. There is an export of dore bars to Germany, amounting in value to from $1,000,000 to $1,500,000 annually. There were, in 1891, upwards of forty reduction-works in and about the city where the silver ores were treated, chiefly by the ancient patio method. In these works were 65 Chilean mills, 301 arrastres of large size, and 936 of smaller dimensions. There were 36 steam engines, but mule-power was generally used at the ar-

Analysis of data on the equilibrium exchange of sodium ions from salt solutions for calcium ions, from various fractions of an oxidized calcareous iron ore from Lorraine, France, strongly suggests that the calcium may be attached to the solid by only one of its bonds. Nearly equal values were found for the equilibrium expression from data covering concentration ranges of 1000 fold for the salt and 235 fold for the ion-exchangeable calcium. Differences indicated between the exchangeable calcium contents of the slime and the sandy portions of the ore, as well as the equilibrium relationship itself, are of importance in the flotation of the ore. During an experimental program on the flotation of oxidized calcareous iron ores from Lorraine, France, ion-exchangeable calcium was found in the ore. Because this source of calcium ions, if not controlled, could thwart all efforts at flotation, an extensive study was made of the phenomenon. The part of that study reported here was to obtain data on the equilibrium established between ore solids and solutions of sodium chloride, and to analyze the data to try to understand better the physical chemistry of the exchange. The ore contains oolites of goethite and quartz grains embedded in a matrix consisting of calcite and a brown cement believed to be the residue from oxidation of the silicate minerals found in fresh unoxidized ore. When ground, a substantial fraction of the ore becomes a fine slime in which is concentrated more than half of the alumina content of the ore. It is believed that the alumina occurs as unidentified clay minerals with which most of the ion-exchange capacity of the ore is associated. A preliminary experiment on the exchange of ions from the ore for sodium ions from solutions of NaCl showed that calcium was about ten times as abundant as magnesium in the exchange solutions. Thus calcium was the predominant ion in causing difficulties with flotation, and it was the only one for which data was obtained in this study. It is believed that the omission of magnesium ion exchange from consideration does not invalidate the results. It is possible, however, that inclusion of magnesium in the analyses and calculations or its prior elimination from the samples would have improved the consistency of the results. This Bureau of Mines publication is a literature study of the problem of spontaneous oxidation and combustion of sulfides in underground mines. It summarizes the present-day hazards, process mechanisms, and prevention and control techniques of this growing problem in underground mines. The iron sulfides generally have the greatest tendency to oxidize, particularly pyrrhotite. The presence of moisture and oxygen is essential for the oxidation reaction. Highly fractured sulfides, when found with timber or combustible refuse in slowly circulating air, pose the most serious fire hazard. Quenching with water is effective in quickly dealing with local hot spots, but ventilation at high flaw rates is the most effective and economical means for long-term prevention and control.

Grunerite asbestos (amosite) has been shown in epidemiological and experimental animal studies to cause lung cancer, mesothelioma and pulmonary fibrosis commonly referred to as asbestosis. An overview of the human and experimental animal studies describing the health hazards of grunerite asbestos (amosite) is presented. Of the many human studies describing the health hazards of asbestos, only three factories using mainly, if not exclusively, grunerite asbestos (amosite) have been studied. The first is a series of reports on a cohort of 820 workers from a plant located in Paterson, NJ. Among this cohort, 18.7% died of lung cancer and 17 mesotheliomas occurred. The Paterson factory closed in 1954 and moved to Tyler, Texas where it operated until 1972. Among the 1130 former workers in the Tyler plant 6 mesotheliomas were reported with 15.8% lung cancer mortality. The third grunerite asbestos (amosite) exposed cohort was an insulation board manufacturing facility in Uxbridge, United Kingdom. Here 17.1% of the workers died of lung cancer and 5 mesotheliomas occurred. The lung content from 48 Uxbridge workers was analyzed by analytical transmission electron microscopy for mineral fibers. The relationship between grunerite asbestos (amosite) concentrations in the lung correlated with grades of fibrosis and asbestos bodies and was lower than the concentration found in the cases with malignant tumors. The lung cancer cases contained more grunerite asbestos (amosite) than mesothelioma cases, and in the cases of non-alignant disease the concentrations were still lower. In both types of malignancies the concentration of grunerite asbestos (amosite) was very high-over a billion fibers per gram of dried lung tissue. Occupational exposure to airborne concentrations of between 14 and 100 fibers of grunerite asbestos (amosite) per milliliter after 20 year latency causes marked increases in lung cancer, mesothelioma and pulmonary fibrosis (asbestosis). © 2007 Elsevier Inc. Thermal, metallographic, and vapor pressure data were obtained to establish the phase diagram for the thorium-zinc system. Four compounds corresponding to the stoichiometric formulas Th2Zn, ThZn2, ThZn4, and Th2Zn17 were observed. The melting points of these compounds under constrained vapor conditions were found to be 1055°, 1105°, 1095°, and 1015°C respectively. Four eutectics exist in this system with the following eutectic temperatures and thorium contents in wt pct: 1040°C, 89 Th; 945°C, 79 Th; 1045°C, 55 Th; and 995°C, 35 Th. The standard free energy, enthalpy, and entropy of formation for the compounds were determined from zinc vapor pressure data. ALTHOUGH the thorium-zinc system has been of technical importance in the commercial production of thorium and more recently of interest to some proposed pyrometallurgical separations processes for reactor fuels or blanket materials no detailed investigation of this system has been made in the past. Some previous work has been reviewed by Hanssen.1 The existence of four compounds, Th2Zn17, ThZn4, ThZn2, and Th2Zn has been established and their crystal structures have been studied by X-ray diffraction techniques.2-4 Smirnov et al.,5 determined the solubility of thorium in zinc and investigated the two-phase region between Th2Zn17 and zinc. They calculated some of the thermodynamic properties for these alloys from emf measurements on the cells Th/ThCl4(fused)/Cl2, C and Th2Zn17(s)+ Zn (l)/ThCl4(fused)/Cl2, C. The possibility of reaction between the anode materials and fused thorium tetrachloride to produce a lower valent thorium salt would have to be resolved in order to evaluate the results obtained. The purpose of the present investigation is to establish the phase diagram for the thorium-zinc system and to determine the standard free energy, enthalpy, and entropy of formation for the compounds formed. MATERIALS AND EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES The metals employed in the preparation of alloys were Bunker Hill slab zinc, 99.99 pct pure and Ames Lalboratory thorium. The major impurities in the thorium in parts per million were oxygen—1250, carbon—350, iron—100, nitrogen-75, and silicon—70. The metals in the form of several small massive pieces, total weight about 30 g, were cleaned with acid, washed with water and acetone, and dried just prior to their use for alloy preparation. Tantalum containers were found to be suitable for all the alloys studied and were used throughout this investigation. The metals were sealed inside of small 1-in.-diam tantalum crucibles by welding on preformed tantalum covers. INTRODUCTION The Point Lepreau nuclear generating station was constructed in the late 1970's and early 1980's by the New Brunswick Electric Power Commission. Point Lepreau is a small peninsula on the north shore of the Bay of Fundy, about 55 km west of St. John, New Brunswick. Cooling water for the plant was to be obtained from and discharged into the Bay of Fundy by the system of shafts and tunnels illustrated in Fig. 1. The design engineer for the cooling water system was Albery, Pullerits, Dickson and Associates, Ltd., Toronto. Ferrera-Resco Ltd, Windsor, Ontario, was contractor for construction of the cooling water shaft and tunnel system, which was done between 1976 and 1979. The senior author was project manager for Ferrera-Resco, the junior author served as consultant to Ferrera-Resco on evaluation of certain geotechnical questions which arose during construction. SITE CONDITIONS Geology Except for limited overburden soils at the onshore shaft sites, the tunnels and shafts were constructed entirely in Triassic conglomerate, sandstone, and siltstone, with some shale interbeds. The bedding strike averaged about N6°E, The dip was to the west at about 30° along the Discharge Tunnel and 40° along the Intake Tunnel. Rock along the Intake Tunnel was mostly sandstone and siltstone and more thinly bedded, with RQ D generally in the range of 50 to 60%. Rock along the Discharge Tunnel tended to be coarser sandstone and conglomerate and more thickly bedded, with higher RQ D averaging about 80%. DEPOSITS of iron are widely scattered in the folded Cretaceous rocks and the associated igneous intrusives of Puerto Rico. Most of them are too small for commercial development, but a few have aroused some scientific and economic interest, among them the large body of residua] limonite at the west end of the island near Mayaguez1-6 (Fig. 1) and the mixed hematite and magnetite deposit on the southern slopes of the Sierra de Cayey, about four miles north of Arroyo.7-9 Neither of these orebodies has been developed, nor have investigations of the widely distributed deposits of magnetite, which include all the remaining occurrences of iron deserving of economic consideration, proceeded beyond the exploratory stage. With the possible exception of the mixed deposit near Arroyo, the magnetite is directly associated with andesitic and dioritic intrusives, which invade the Cretaceous rock section, and the bulk of it, occurring in calcareous sediments, is clearly of contact-replacement origin. A family of personal computer programs that calculate the Coal Mine Roof Rating (CMRR) has been developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The CMRR rock mass classification system provides a link between the qualitative geologists' description of coal mine roof and the quantitive mine engineers' needs for mine design roof support selection, and hazard detection. The program CMRR is a user-friendly, interactive program into which raw field data are input. A CMRR is calculated and output along with two graphic displays. The first graphic display is a plan view trap with the CMRR's displayed on a color-coded scale. The second display shows a stratigraphic section of the bolted roof interval and its resultant CMRR. In addition, a Lotus 1-2-3 worksheet, computer file BOM-CMRR.WK3, has been developed for easy storage of field data. The worksheet includes four macros that automatically calculate CMRR's, store field test data in a database format, and print a two-page report of the field data and CMRR parameters. Production of summary port; for analysis of site-specific information are readily generated using Lotus 1-2-3 software. These programs help to facilitate the engineer in utilizing the CMRR in ground control studies.

Between February and August of 1986, Dr Alfred Petrick visited New Zealand sponsored under a Fulbright grant administered by the New Zealand-United States Educational Foundation. The grant supported a research project completed by Dr Petrick having as an objective, the preparation of a preliminary economic evaluation of the mining of six Otago lignite deposits as a source of energy for steam power generation or in liquid fuels. The research is limited to consideration of preliminary geological and engineering data on the six deposits and to the time constraints of the Fulbright visit. This Bureau of Mines report summarizes the performance characteristics of a 30-day around-the-clock gasification-pelletizing test conducted in October and November of 1980 with North Dakota Indianhead lignite. Gasification was conducted in a commercial-size, 6.5-it-diam, Single-stage, fixed-bed, atmospheric pressure producer with a rated capacity of about 30 million Btu/hr. Iron oxide pellets made from a commercial hematite concentrate were fired with the low-Btu gas in a 2.8-ft-diam by 35-ft-long pilot plant rotary kiln at a rate of 900 lb of pellets per hour. Gasifier operations at fuel feed rates up to 3 tons of lignite per hour and hematite pellet induration with raw 160-Btu/std ft3 lignite gas are described.

Germany as an industrial nation is highly dependent on the import of mineral or metal resources. Sources which have not been considered until now are the marine mineral resources (MMR), which in recent times are enjoying more and more increasing interests and which might provide in the future a considerable contribution to the supply security on metal resources not only for the industrial countries. Backed up by the German government’s "National Masterplan Maritime Technologies" (NMMT) and corresponding industrial R&D-activities, the idea and the advantages of deep-sea mining is gaining more and more interests and supporters with respect to industrial and political considerations on strategic raw material resources as well as on the development of deep-sea mining technologies. The NMMT aims to initiate growth and increase the competitiveness of the German maritime industry on international markets and covers about 10 different marine and ocean technology sectors including deep-sea mining.

Most types of nuclear power reactors use uranium dioxide fuel. Power reactors using natural uranium dioxide fuel are of special interest to countries such as Australia that have their own uranium supplies. A wide range of uranium dioxide powders can be fabricated and the ideal one flows readily, presses without the need for binders or lubricants, sinters to the required density and gives low reject rates at all fabrication stages. Sinterable uranium dioxide is usually produced via the ammonium diuranate route.The Australian Atomic Energy Commission is aiming to demonstrate production of nuclear grade uranium dioxide from Australian concentrates, improving technology where possible. Details are given of the dissolution, solvent extraction, precipitation, filtration, drying, and· calcination-reduction steps. Solvent extraction from sulphate media is also under study with a view to developing a process to produce a nuclear grade product at the mine treatment plant site.

"In 2002, Atlas Copco Rock Drills AB released the new rig control system (RCS) technology for all of its drill rig types. RCS opened the way for a new generation of computerized drill rigs based on modern, standard PC-computer technology. Drilling accuracy, information logging, reduction in manpower in some types, and serviceability have all taken a quantum leap forward when compared with previous generations of drill rigs. RCS is modularized and distributed by means of CAN-bus technology. This technology, which is well proven in automobile applications, forms the communication backbone of the rig. The modularity facilitates almost unlimited possibilities for the expansion and adaptation of drill rig functions."

Twenty-sixth Sir Julius Wernher memorial lecture, presented at the Tunnelling '94 symposium held in London, 5-7 July 1994. In describing 18 projects with which he has been involved over a period of 36 years, the author aims to illustrate how technological change and an increase in scientific knowledge have influenced tunnelling practice, which he nevertheless maintains does continue to be an art. The grade control process undertaken at mines aims to maximise the value of the ore (valuable product) mined and fed downstream for processing or sale. The full range of grade control activities includes: reserve estimating, drilling/sampling, assaying, modelling, ore block design, blasting, ore mark out, excavating, stockpiling, processing and reconciling. Over the last 25 years, the grade control process has undergone significant improvements and this is in part due to the developments in grade control blasting. This paper discusses the development and classification of grade control blasting applications in surface mining. A review by the author in 1988 (Little and van Rooyen, 1988) is used as a benchmark for discussing the very significant progress that has been made.Two major technology initiatives have enabled this development. The first was the development of a method for the measurement and analysis of total displacement during the blasting process. Currently, the Blast Movement Monitor (BMM®) is a practical tool that has been used around the world to improve the industry’s understanding of three-dimensional blast movement dynamics. The second technological enabler was the development of electronic detonator systems. The unique aspects of electronic detonating systems are their higher accuracy and that all detonators are activated at time zero (initiation). From a grade control blasting perspective these features and other improvements allow experimentation and, ultimately, more complex, multiobjective blasts to be designed and implemented.This paper reports on a classification and review study undertaken by the author. In all, five selective blasting methods and nine bulk blasting methods are classified and reviewed. Five important observations are made: there is value in classifying the range of grade control blasting strategies, and the blasting objective framework presented is helpful in this regard the range of strategies available to designers is increasing as enabling technology develops, so too do the ambitions of blast designers and the expectations of downstream customersgrade control blasting and Mine to Mill concepts are merging, and this paper caters for this trend using multiple blasting objectiveshaving a technical primary blasting objectives framework, combined with the classification system presented here, should assist practitioners and stakeholders with lateral thinking in regards to future technological innovations, grade control blasting and Mine to Mill initiatives.CITATION:Little, T N, 2015.
