IN the recent monograph on Broken Hill, N.S.W., by E. C. Andrews,* two independent petrological reports appear as Appendices 1 and n, by W. R. Browne and F. L. Stillwell respectively. In these considerable differences of opinion occur. Andrews contributes to some of the questions at issue, but no analytical review of the differences appears in the body of the report. Their development may invite question, and the following notes have been prepared partly in explanation and partly as a summary of some of the divergences. The soope of Browne's report extends over the whole district of Broken Hill, while Stillwell's deals with the rocks within 25 chains of the main lode. The more difficult and important rock-types occur in both areas, raising similar questions. In both cases observations extended beyond the limits of the prescribed areas. Broadly, Browne faces his problem as a study of a series of primary igneous rooks, acid and basio, whioh are intrusive into a series of sillimanite gneisses. The development of the sillimanite gneisses is regarded as belonging to an earlier period than the intrusion of the igneous rooks, while the gneissio structures of the latter are features which are incidental to their orystallization, and are not acquired subsequent to their consolidation. He finally produoes a picture in which his views of igneous injection and differentiation takes a prominent place. One direct result is the claim that three separate periods of metamorphism have oocurred in the Broken Hill area. Stillwell primarily examines the rooks as schists and gneisses since their present dominating features have been acquired during metamorphism. The effort is made to understand suoh differences as might arise from differing conditions of metamorphism upon rocks of similar and different oonstitution. The aim is to divest the rocks of those oharaoters which are due to metamorphism before approaching the questions of intrusive relatio'nships between igneous rocks andsediments.

The use of black and white and colour infrared film in remote sensing of natural resources is reviewed. In heavlly-forested areas such as New Zealand, the main value of the method is in surveying the vegetation cover to detect the existence of plant communities characteristic of specific geological formations. By contrast in arid areas of Australia where the vegetation cover is sparse and where rocks and soils are well exposed, the method can be used in detecting different rock types or other geological differences.

"Dating back to 1934, Con Mine is located directly south to the city of Yellowknife in the NWT, Canada. With mill operations ceasing in 2004, a challenging surface remediation situation resulted which required the treatment of close to 40,000 m3 of Arsenic impacted material.Through much of the period of 1941 to 1970, Con Mine treated their refractory arsenopyrite ore through the use of an Edwards Heath roaster. With mounting environmental pressure and through Canadian governmental studies during 1950 to 1970, attention was directed to the Arsenic Trioxide material being collected by two Doyle scrubbers on the Con’s roaster stack. In 1970, the roaster was decommissioned leaving the resulting Arsenic material in two containment areas on surface.As a result of Con Mine entering into remediation in 2004, the Con’s autoclave, commissioned in 1992, was dedicated to the immobilization of high impacted Arsenic material through the combination of excess Iron under high temperature and oxygen overpressure. Examined, herein, is the history and chemistry of the Con Mine autoclave as well as the two stages of chemistry for the Water Treatment Plant used to remove arsenic, heavy metals and WAD cyanide from tailings water. Simplified capping plans of the tailing containment areas and a high arsenic impacted area are also presented.INTRODUCTION TO CON MINECon Mine (Con) is situated just south of the City of Yellowknife in the North West Territories (NWT) Canada and is bounded locally by Yellowknife Bay (North Extension of Great Slave Lake) to the east and Kam Lake to the west (Figure 6). The discovery of gold at Con was made in 1934 and mineral rights were acquired by Consolidated Mining and Smelting Limited (Cominco) and Falconbridge soon thereafter. Nerco Minerals Limited (Nerco) took control in 1986 and in 1993, was subsequently sold to, Miramar Mining Corporation which in turn was purchased by friendly takeover involving Newmont Mining in November 2007 as a result of acquiring the Miramar’s Hope Bay project. Con’s underground operations ceased in September 2003 and have since entered into the remediation of the site. The current surface lease holdings are about 340 Hectares (Table 1) which sits on top of the Archean-aged Yellowknife Greenstone Belt."

Through the application of the Rietveld method, X-ray diffraction analysis has developed into a fully quantitative method for phase analysis. The Rietveld method itself has progressed from an unstable method that required constant operator intervention to a stable and robust method suited even for routine analysis. The method, however, requires a good initial calibration and periodic checks on its precision and accuracy. Several examples from minerals processing, pyrometallurgy, and materials science show the strengths and applicability of the method. The limitations and sources of error are also discussed.

The Southern Alps of New Zealand and the mountains of Taiwan are both young transpressive orogens characterised by rapid uplift and exhumation, high heat flow and vigorous surface processes. Comparing and contrasting the two provides an ideal framework through which to explore the structural and lithological controls on fluid and gold mobility during collisional deformation. Both have two fluid flow systems centred about their drainage divide with shallow topographically-driven meteoric water above a deeper flow system dominated by mineralising rock-exchanged fluids. Despite similar tectonic settings, the distribution of heat flow, hot springs and veins in the two orogens are different. Taiwan has higher heat flow, distributed hot springs and localised veining whereas the Southern Alps have a narrow heat flow anomaly, localised warm springs and widespread veining. We use three-dimensional numerical models to evaluate key parameters that affect fluid flow and gold mineralisation. Models show that differences in crustal strength and thickness affect the locus, scale and rate of crustal fluid flow and hence influence gold deposition at a variety of scales. We explore how surface topography can lead to localised changes in the stress state, facilitating the switching of principal stresses and hence vein orientations.CITATION:Upton, P and Craw, D, 2015. As open pit mines continue to grow deeper and productivity continues to increase, the management of respirable dust and noxious gases can become a challenge. The natural wind flow in open pit mines is often recirculatory. This recirculation traps dust and gases in deep open pit mines. This problem is particularly acute in high latitude open pit mines due to a phenomenon known as an atmospheric inversion. In the winter, arctic and subarctic regions experience short days and long nights. This deficit of solar radiation creates a situation in which cold, still air accumulates near the bottom of the pit. In open pit mines, this can result in unhealthy accumulations of gases and other contaminants in the open pit mines. In this study, the natural wind flow patterns in and around open pit mines were investigated using a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) program. Two dimensional models were created for a variety of pit geometries. The effect of depth, slope angle, and wind speed on the recirculation pattern in the pit was examined.

Este proceso consiste en que los minerales son sensibles al ataque de soluciones ácidas y oxidantes. En ese sentido, el objetivo del texto fue determinar la respuesta de los sulfuros secundarios de cobre a la lixiviación ácida y oxidante utilizando cloruro de sodio como portador de cloruro al sistema de lixiviación. El desarrollo de las pruebas y la ejecución de las mismas, definiió el proceso de lixiviación para minerales sulfurados de Minera Pampa de Cobre.

Committee and the Bureau of Mines of the Department of the Interior. The report gives results of analyses in oil-company laboratories of sample of gasoline obtained from service-station pumps in 18 marketing areas by representatives of oil companies. These companies obtained the samples and analyzed them for their own information and supplied data from their laboratory reports to the Bureau of Mines for compilation and publication. The genesis of Simrac?s technology transfer practices and future initiatives are discussed in this report. Simrac produces a relatively large volume of research-based health and safety outputs that must be communicated to its tripartite stakeholders and to other interested and affected parties. The wide spectrum and complexity of the transferables, together with the diversity of end-user needs and skills of the recipient population, necessitate customizing of technology transfer practices. In an attempt to optimize this process, a variety of practices are employed. Information is transferred by means of publication and dissemination of a variety of reports (paper, website and CD).Knowledge transfer is directed to health and safety practitioners by means of workshops, seminars, best practice booklets, handbooks and textbooks. Promotion of recently completed projects is directed at targeted recipients by means of project launches. Only isolated cases of piloting and implementation of technologies have been undertaken due to lack of resources and past organizational focus. It is anticipated that Simrac?s new organizational structure and management system, together with end-user involvement by industry champions, from project inception to implementation, will enhance the effectiveness of the technology transfer process.

The MIDAS project is funded by the European Commission (DG Research) and began on the 1st November 2013. The project will investigate the environmental impact of deep-sea mineral and energy extraction: specifically, polymetallic sulphides, manganese nodules, cobalt-rich ferromanganese crusts and the potential mining of rare earth elements. As deep-sea mining becomes ever closer, and the International Seabed Authority begins to develop its regulatory framework for exploitation of deep-sea minerals, MIDAS is well timed to provide fundamental scientific information. The MIDAS partnership represents a unique combination of scientists, industry, social scientists, legal experts, nongovernmental organisations and small and medium enterprises. MIDAS is carrying out research into the nature and scales of the potential impacts of mining including 1) physical disturbance of the seabed by mining, the creation of mine tailings; 2) the potential effects of particle-laden plumes in the water column, and 3) the possible toxic chemicals that might be released by the mining process. Key biological unknowns, such as connectivity between populations, impacts of the loss of biological diversity on ecosystem functioning, and how quickly the ecosystems will recover will all be addressed. The plan is to use this information to aid development of recommendations for best practice in the mining industry. A key component is the involvement of industry within the project and through stakeholder engagements to find feasible solutions. The project will work closely with European and international regulatory organisations to take these recommendations forward into legislation. A major element of MIDAS will be to develop methods and technologies for 1) preparing baseline assessments of biodiversity, and 2) monitoring activities remotely in the deep sea during and after exploitation, including ecosystem recovery. To carry out this work MIDAS is conducting a number of research cruises to examine the above issues at potential sites for exploitation of SMS and nodule deposits. This talk will present some of the recent findings of the project.

"The Key Lake uranium mill is located in Northern Saskatchewan. It treats a high grade, complex uranium and metal sulphide ore. The plant and process are in many respects unique, because commercial treatment of this type of uranium ore had never been done before. The process and engineering design was based on extensive laboratory test results. A pilot plant testing stage was omitted because of confidence in the test results and time constraints to bring the plant into production.The bench scale testwork on exploration drill core samples along with preparation of the feasibility study and environmental impact statement were carried out between 1976 and 1979. The contract for detailed engineering was awarded to Wright Engineers of Vancouver in late 1980 and in August of 1981 following a public inquiry, approval to proceed with construction was granted.Construction began immediately, and during the winter the foundations for many of the plant buildings were poured and by the beginning of the following winter the buildings had been erected and installation of equipment began. Despite a six month construction worker strike in 1982, the crushing plant started up in June of 1983 and ore processing commenced in October of that year, approximately 3 months behind the original schedule.This paper describes the mill design and compares the expected performance, with the operating experience. Emphasis is directed towards flowsheet and equipment changes made since start-up, operational difficulties encountered and further improvements envisaged. Auxiliary systems are only discussed where they directly affect mill operation."

The need to recruit locally produced engineers by the South African Mining Industry led to the Engineering Faculty at the University of the Witwatersrand developing a number of academic bridging initiatives for educationally disadvantaged students. The graduation rate achieved during the initial five years of operation by the most successful of these programmes has been on a par with that of al other students but the performance of subsequent intakes has declined to such an extent that the continuance of this scheme could now be at risk. One reason for this reduction in throughput is that many of the applicants for the increasing number of mining bursaries have been more interested in the bursary than the profession and have either failed or dropped out due to a lack of application and motivation. This will have serious consequences for both Wits and the Industry if it continues and some method of identifying unsuitable or suspect applicants needs to be introduced as a mater of urgency. It is recommended that an introductory course be set up at a working mine that would be run under the auspices of Wits, as a joint venture with industry, and include a level of academic input that would provide both bridging needs and certain first year credits. The final form of this course will require extensive consultation with al parties but needs to be completed before the end of 1996. It is further recommended that the advertising and promotion of mining careers be expanded and much improved.

En ese sentido, el presente texto señala que la energía solar se convierte en una herramienta que ayuda a lixiviar minerales con poca pirita y obtener una temperatura de proceso que magnifica la recuperación del cobre en especial de la calcopirita, etc. Asimismo, la influencia cuantitativa de la temperatura en la recuperación de los sulfuros primarios, transicionales y secundarios de cobre, la velocidad de calentamiento de la pila, las temperaturas de proceso que puede alcanzarse, las pérdidas de calor en el periodo no soleado del día, el balance térmico de la pila y otros indicadores económicos de viabilidad, etc. son presentados como resultados de pruebas diversas a nivel de laboratorio e industrial.

An attempt has been mace in this publication to present annotated references to all articles pertaining, to ore dressing that were published during 1931 and 1932; in a few instances reference is made to articles published prior to 1931 where the articles have not been included in previous bibliography appended to the annual statistical discussions of ore concentration published by the Bureau of Mines. Articles have been taken from more than 75 periodicals, journals, serials, etc., and 423 articles are abstracted herewith. A number of these abstracts, particularly those appearing in foreign publications, have been taken from Chemical Abstracts (published by the American Chemical Society, Easton, Pa.), the general use of which the authors wish to acknowledge. Other annotations were taken directly from the original publications. The entire field of ore dressing has been included in the bibliography and articles dealing with crushing, grinding classification, concentration, thickening, and filtration have been included, as well as on amalgamation, cyanidation, leaching, magnetic concentration, washing, etc., and on theory and laboratory operation. The articles are arranged in alphabetical order by authors. Lack of printing funds prohibited the inclusion of a subject index.

Between 1989 and 2004 the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA)constructed several major wastewater and water tunnels associated with three major projects in the Boston area of eastern Massachusetts. There were many similarities and differences in the bedrock conditions encountered and among the contractual approaches for these independent projects. Through a clarification of the approach similarities and analysis of the contract differences, this paper addresses and presents what are considered to be valuable lessons learned. In doing so, the paper follows the evolution of such disparate issues as contract conditions, baseline reports and dispute review boards. The authors believe that the lessons learned even represent what, in certain cases, could be referred to as “universal truths” that are intended to have application to the next generation of tunneling contracts.

Sulphuric acid leaching at atmospheric pressure of a number of Australian nickeliferous laterites was examined in detail. The results obtained indicate that nickel can be extracted from these ores, although the conditions required to achieve about 90 per cent extraction vary widely. These differences in reactivity can be related to the types of nickel-bearing minerals present.Nickel is more readily extracted from nickel-bearing clays such as chlorite, than it is from nickel-containing goethite.The results clearly show the problems associated with the processing of complex ores such as the nickeliferous laterites, and they indicate the need for complete characterization of each deposit.

A combination of novel and æclassicÆ methods, namely electric pulse disaggregation (EPD), hydroseparation (HS), preparation of monolayer polished sections, and mineral liberation analysis (MLA) was employed to study ores from platinum pipes (Bushveld Complex, South Africa), pristine PGE mineralisation of the Main Sulfide Zone (Great Dyke, Zimbabwe), as well as ancient and modern gold/PGM placer deposits. It is shown here that the EPD technique liberates mineral grains of interest without any visible destruction allowing the study and analysis of individual rock-forming and ore minerals, in our case especially platinum-group minerals. The HS method is an effective tool in concentrating heavy minerals by factors up to 10 000 fold. As near-total recovery of grains >10 ¦m is achieved, the nugget effect can be overcome also in case of limited availability of samples (drill core, museum specimens). The MLA technique is a fast tool to detect and characterise mineral phases in ores and ore processing products. Many mineralogical parameters of individual grains and mineral assemblages can be deducted and documented. The results show that the techniques employed, either on their own or in combination, provide a wide range of additional information especially on platinum ores which is beneficial to both the researcher and the metallurgist.
