The total iron ore production in Sweden in 1969 was 33.3 million metric tons. 31.7 million tons were exported mainly to Western European countries. 27.8 million tons (87 per cent) originated from the mines at Kiruna, Svappavaara and Malmberget, located just north of the Arctic Circle in Sweden. Planned production for 1970 is 25 million tons during 10 months, due to a strike at the beginning of the year. Present production plans for the next five years expect an annual export capacity around 33 million tons in 1975, including 5.7 million tons of pellets. The mining and shipping at the loading terminals of Narvik on the Atlantic coast and Luleå at the Gulf of Bothnia are managed by LKAB - a 96 per cent state-owned company. 4 per cent of the share capital is owned by the private Grängesberg Company. The railway - 106 miles from Kiruna to Narvik and 130 miles from Malmberget to Luleå - is operated by the State Railways in Sweden and Norway. Comprehensive expansion of the Narvik ore port will be carried through during the next five years to increase the annual shipping capacity to at least 35 million tons and meet the development of rapidly growing ship sizes.

Good afternoon gentlemen. It is always a pleasure to talk about a subject dear to our hearts--the high speed transfer of bull; materials. Specifically, today we will be reviewing the engineering approach to an age old problem of ship loading and unloading. You may be puzzled by the title of this paper and we will attempt to explain this for you--particularly the use of the words "New Era", since high speed automated facilities are nothing new to the material handling engineer. The new era in material handling designs refers to an all out concerted effort to provide custom engineering tailored to specific operations and economic requirements of the client. It shuns hardware type of engineering wherein existing machines and devices are dusted off and reapplied. It provides automation when automation can be justified and it exemplifies the application of systems engineering to solve specific problems.

The El Boleo Copper Project is currently in the final design stages for development of a 3-MM-tonne/yr underground copper mine located in Baja California, Mexico. The nearly horizontal mineralized zones are amenable to exploitation by conventional mechanized coal mining technology using continuous miners, shuttle cars, and belt haulage. The mine design resembles a typical full-extraction coal mining operation utilizing a sequence of mains, sub-mains and production panels. Due to numerous faults, mining will be conducted as several small adjacent mines accessed through adits from large arroyos cutting through the mine area. Up to four seams may be mined in some areas with a maximum overburden depth of about 250 m. The ore zone is relatively weak and plastic, subject to extensive creep over time. The mine workings will pass through areas of historical shortwall mining panels where the ground has flowed into old entries and gob areas, and then reconsolidated. A small test mine was developed to evaluate mechanical cutting performance, roof-bolt anchorage capacities, roof and pillar stability and caving behavior. In-mine measurements were combined with two- and three-dimensional FLAC models to evaluate alternative development and production pillar designs. The paper will discuss the various factors influencing ground stability at the El Boleo project and the strategies employed in developing a suitable ground control design.

Prior to July 2007, the only accepted method by MSHA for evaluating the mine seal design and performance is the full-scale explosion tests conducted in the NIOSH?s Lake Lynn Experimental Mine (LLEM) for deeming a seal design suitable for use in U.S. coal mines. Since the new regulations came into effect use of these conventional full-scale explosion tests for evaluating mine seals for the new elevated design standards may not be practicable. Generation of such high explosion pressures in experimental mines is dangerous and may cause permanent damage to the testing facilities. Further, they require significant amount of time, labor and money. Considering these factors, there is a need to develop scientific methods for evaluation of new seal designs and for understanding the dynamic seal response. This paper tries to address the reinforced concrete (RC) seal design using the three dimensional finite element based explicit software ABAQUS. Full-scale explosion test data available from NIOSH?s LLEM on 20 psi reinforced concrete seal is used for validating the numerical models. Further in this paper, based on the results from the validation models, a reinforced concrete seal is designed for 120 psi design standard for typical entry dimensions.

A unique machine has been designed for mining narrow veins. The machine, called the NONN, walks on the walls of the stope and carries a boom-mounted hydraulic impact breaker. The concept of walking on the walls allows an existing muck handling system such as LHDs to operate beneath the NOMN. The NOMM has four sets of legs which can be manipulated independently or concurrently to cause the carrier to walk in any direction and to turn sharp corners. The mining rate using the breasting method is targeted to be 25 t/hr.

The occurrence of rock falls in underground coal mines entails detrimental effects as fatal or non-fatal injuries on workers, stoppages in mining operations and breakdown of equipment. In this paper, a risk assessment approach on the basis of a decision analysis trend is employed in order to assess the possibility of and manage roof falls. Risk is then assessed by determination of likelihood of occurrence and the cost of consequences (outcomes). In this regard, collected real roof fall data from Tabas and Kerman coal regions comprising of several underground coal mines are used. It is concluded that the annual accidents due to the roof falls occurrence in the all investigated mines are so high that it is economically feasible to improve the support systems and to implement a suitable educational program as well as an accurate supervision and other elements of safety management.

As part of a funded project we have completed a comparative literature survey of the US regional Proterozoic geology. For our com¬parative study model we used the geological settings of the very large pitchblende deposits in Saskatchewan, Canada and the Northern Terri¬tory of Australia. These occur in a variety of Archean and Lower Proterozoic host rocks, at and below a regional unconformity that is capped by subhorizontal Middle to Upper Proterozoic conti¬nental sedimentary rocks. We find that there have been recorded in some parts of the US similar unconformable sequences of Middle to Upper Proterozoic continental sedimentary rocks that overlie older basement rocks.

One of the fundamental issues having a great influence on the safety of operations performed in underground mines is the support of workings which should assure their stability in a given geological setting and mining-technical conditions during the life of their use. The process of designing and planning support for roadways may use analytical and empirical, as well as numerical methods. In view of the rapid increase in the data processing capacity of computers and the development of more and more enhanced software for numerical modeling, it seems to be advantageous to use numerical methods in searching for design solutions ? especially in the case of non-typical mining and geological conditions and in cases that need to take into consideration a great number of factors. The assessment of rock mass quality is of basic significance in designing mine supports. Fractures, dividing the rock mass into blocks, have an essential influence on the stability of the rock mass and underground construction. This paper presents examples of the fundamental underground investigations on the rock mass conducted by the Department of Extraction Technologies and Mining Supports of the Central Mining Institute in Poland, such as: penetrometric tests, introscopic examination, laboratory testing of rock samples and ground penetrating radar. Moreover, this contribution also presents examples of applications of three-dimensional numerical modeling for the purposes of stress-strain analysis of the rock mass around mine workings and computer-aided support design by means of FLAC3D (developed by Itasca) and Cosmos/M (developed by Structural Research and Analysis Corporation).

"With seven new applications for plans of work for exploration in the international Seabed Area approved by the Council during its twentieth session of the International Seabed Authority, 26 total approvals have been made by the Council up to date. Among them, three contracts were made with COMRA. On 8 August 2014, China Minmetals Corporation submitted another application to the Authority for approval of a plan of work for exploration for polymetallic nodules in the Area, which is also sponsored by the Government of the People’s Republic of China.China is one of the main contributors to the international seabed regime. The Presentation will describe China’s activities in the Area, such as exploration, technology development, environmental protection and policy making.JIAOLONG is a submersible with capacity of 7000 meters. JIAOLONG’s sea trials were carefully made in 4 years, from 2009 through 2012 and it successfully dove to a depth of 7062m in June 2012 at Mariana trench. A so called "Test Application Phase" started thereafter, and is planned to last for 3-4 years. Two cruises and 4 legs have already been made since then. A wide-range of findings were obtained during dives in South China Sea, and in COMRA’s Exploration Contract Areas for polymetallic nodules and cobalt-rich ferromanganese crusts. This presentation will reveal the colorful findings."

An integral part of site investigations for shafts and underground workings should be hydrogeologic evaluations of the need for and method of ground-water control. Such investigations should include: 1. Classification of the problem by aquifer type. 2. Integration of other site investigations with hydrogeologic programs, including assessment of the need for water control. 3. Planning and conduct of aquifer tests tailored to the aquifer situation. 4. Evaluation of pumping requirements to achieve water control objectives. 5. Scheduling of dewatering for optimum results and costs. 6. Evaluation of environmental impacts of pumpage and water discharge. 7. Planning of operational monitoring for program modification and liability limitation. Early hydrogeologic involvement can result in avoiding unnecessary duplication in site investigations.

Commercial computer "time-sharing" is a new and powerful tool for the engineer. It is a system of virtually simultaneous use of a digital computer by several individuals. Access to the computer is by means of a conventional teletypewriter which transmits over the regular telephone lines to the computer which may be located any distance from the user. Complex or repetitive computations can be programmed and the speed of computation is many times that which one can do with slide rule and desk calculator. The availability of such a commercial computer "time-sharing" system offered an opportunity to transform a tedious and time-consuming task into one that requires only a few minutes. Until the work of F. C. Bond produced widely accepted mathematical statements concerning the performance of grinding mills, the selection of the proper size equipment was done by comparison with similar operating equipment. Allis-Chalmers systematized Bond's work in a bulletin published in 1963 but the calculations are laborious and the final mill selection still required comparison of the calculated power draw with the power requirements listed in equipment catalogs. This was, however, a step forward from previous procedures. This paper discusses a rapid and simple method of determining the size and power requirement of overflow ball mills. A shared-time computer program has been developed which rapidly calculates and displays the physical dimensions, power requirements, grinding media size and quantity, as well as the important correction factors used. All of these data are calculated from input information which is usually available.

"SUMMARY Investigations from tunnel face are part of risk mitigation measures during the excavation works. With the tunnel equipment, percussion drillings of up to 30-40m can be achieved. Core drillings are state of art method for investigation exceeding 50m. At Koralm base tunnel, up to 270m deep percussion drillings were performed with drilling rigs and accompanied by an intensive investigation program. These investigations consisted of monitoring during the drilling, field tests (with packer, using the preventer, borehole imaging) and in laboratory. Percussion drillings are cheaper and save time of interruption of the excavation progress. INTRODUCTION As part of a proper risk management, horizontal advance drillings during excavation of underground works can be seen as state of art and meet wide acceptance. Core drillings, deep and shallow percussion drillings can be differed. The selection of the type of drilling, meanwhile, causes intensive discussions. On the one hand, only a core drilling allows a direct investigation of the rock mass expected during later excavation works. On the other hand core drillings are expensive in both cost and time – if there is no excavation progress during the investigation measures – in construction time. Percussion drillings can be performed as rapid investigation measure with the excavation equipment (“Jumbo”) allowing two dimensional image of the ground around the cross section. There is some limitation concerning a reasonable depth of approximately 30m and a borehole diameter of 76mm. The applications of preventer, packer or borehole imaging are hardly applicable. By use of a drilling rig depths of percussion drillings of several hundred meters can be achieved relative easily and there is less limitation of the borehole diameter. Installation of a preventer is possible, as well as packer tests and borehole measurements (imaging, gyroscope, borehole geophysics). The gap of information between core and percussion drilling cannot be closed completely, but it can be reduced substantially and sufficiently by combination of an intensive program of measurements and analysis accompanying the investigation works."

The department of the Interior is a federation or holding company of several fiercely independent bureaus which have either jurisdiction or expertise - or both - in a wide range of environmental fields. Each bureau is an advocate for its own concerns and an enforcer of its own mandates. This can be confusing to the company operating in the field. I will try to explain our concerns, help you see where we are "coming from," and give you some insight as to how we can help you. Other speakers have stressed the environmental concerns and site selection factors for uranium wastes so I will focus on the concerns of the Department of the Interior and some of the assistance we can give you in this area People are more aware and more concerned about environmental factors now than they used to be. Thus the past decade has brought about an evolution in both siting and design of uranium mill tailings ponds. Site selection criteria used to be simple - find a tract of land as near to the ore supply as possible with enough space and suitable topography for the expected volume of wastes. Site selections in the past have left a legacy of problems to be corrected - radioactive wastes on stream banks and in floodplains, mill wastes in and near established communities, and unprotected wastes subject to constant erosion. This is no longer acceptable environmentally or socially to a newly aware and concerned public. (Series of 30-35 slides showing uranium mine and mill wastes in Western United States. The process of magnetic separation is based on the differences among magnetic susceptibilities of various mineral species. Performed either wet or dry, the separation has application in both the recovery and concentration of value minerals and in removing deleterious mineral constituents from a product stream. There are two major catagories to be considered when addressing magnetic separation of minerals. The first catagory refers to particle characterization and relative differences in magnetic susceptibility. The second catagory refers to design parameters and the magnetic field generated by the separator.

EPA's Mining Waste Section within the Office of Solid Waste is continuing to collect and analyze information on mining waste management practices. Starting in 1991, the Mining Waste Section has continued to conduct site visits and prepare case study reports on the waste generation and management practices of operating mines. In choosing sites to study, a reasonable attempt was made to provide diversity in mining commodity types, geographic regions, geology, climate, and environment. To date, EPA has visited the following mines: Asarco Troy (copper) in Montana, Newmont Rain in Nevada (gold), Cyprus Thompson Creek (molybdenum) in Idaho, LTV Steel (iron) in Minnesota, Phelps Dodge Morenci (copper) in Arizona, Doe Run Fletcher (lead) in Missouri, Brewer (gold) in South Carolina, IMC Four Corners (phosphate) .in Florida, Pennzoil Culberson (sulfur) in Texas, Nerco Cripple Creek (gold) in Colorado, Copper Range White Pine (copper) in Michigan, Magma San Manuel (copper) in Arizona, Colosseum (gold) in California, and several gold placer mines in Alaska, including the Valdez Creek Mine. EPA has prepared a case study report on each facility. The mine operators were provided an opportunity to comment on their respective site visit report and their comments have been included in' each respective report. These site visit reports have in turn been incorporated into technical resource documents which provide a detailed description of each mining sector. EPA is currently reviewing the technical resource documents and plans to release the documents in the Spring of 1994.

"The wash ore area on the Mesabi iron range covers a regionof the iron bearing formation extending from Grand Rapids on the west to the Hibbing district, about forty miles eastward. Not all of the developed ore bodies are of wash structure; some are of such grades that they can be shipped direct as merchants able ore. It is safe to say, however, that 65 per cent of the ore is of a possible wash structure and of too high a silica content to be classified as merchantable ore. The increase in the number of washing plants completed each year on the western Mesabi shows that ,the product must be of a structure desirable for furnace operation. The White Pine orebody is characterized by a high lateral stress or highly faulted and joined conditions. Because of these difficult conditions roof support has always been a main concern. Mechanical bolts were widely used in the early seventies; however, it became apparent that major improvements in ground control were required if safe operation at White Pine was to be continued. The first step was taken in 1973-1974 with the testing of resin bolting. Record of caves and roof-falls with either type of support demonstrated superiority of resin bolting versus mechanical bolting - Safety was dramatically improved which was the absolute first consideration; however resin bolting was still more expensive than mechanical bolting. In order to generalize resin bolt installation, the second step was therefore to acquire special roof bolters compatible with resin bolting. The machine was to enhance the safety of the operation. This was achieved by the acquisition of the Secoma bolting machine equipped with an automatic bolting turret. Being a "hands off" operation the safety of the operator is total. Using a fixed taped attachment of the drill steel on the chuck a front guide and an automatic regulator torque thrust on the steel drilling in small diameter was possible. Being a fully automatic process only one operator is required per machine versus two operators with the conventional machines. The two main objectives were reached enabling the extension of resin bolting to the whole mine.

In the construction of recent subsurface projects, particularly mined openings and transit systems, it has been apparent that final costs were often greater than first expected. Because many overruns result from alleged differing site conditions, there was reason to suspect that pre-bid geotechnical investigations were inadequate for predicting subsurface geology. In 1982, nine federal agencies involved in constructing underground facilities funded the National Academy of Sciences' U.S. National Committee on Tunneling Technology (USNC/TT) in an effort to evaluate and clarify the relationship between geological knowledge and construction costs. That committee formed the special Subcommittee on Geological Site Investigations, which spent more than two years studying underground projects by examining contract documents and geologic reports, making site visits, and interviewing owners, designers and contractors. The study ultimately encompassed 84 mined tunnels and chambers and three deep shafts in the United States and eastern Canada. Data collected on geologic exploration, design and construction were analyzed and conclusions reached concerning whether and how site investigations need to be improved. The results of the study are published in two volumes by the National Academy of Sciences. Due to the recent completion date of the main report, it was not possible to prepare a summary for inclusion in the RETC Proceedings. The U.S. Bureau of Mines inventoried and characterized mineral sites and production plants within 200 km of the border in both the U.S. and Mexico. Sources of information included the USBM Minerals Availability System, the USBM Automated Mineral Information System, the USGS Mineral Resources Data System, the Mine Safety and Health Administration Address/Employment File, and the literature. Three hundred seventy-eight major construction material and industrial mineral properties were identified and characterized in the U.S. and Mexican parts of the Borderlands. Sixty-six major metallic mineral properties were identified and characterized in the Mexican part of the Borderlands.
