Gold assays from production blastholes in the Mercur Hill Pit were used to delineate known ore zones and to determine how well previous exploration drilling defined these zones. The most important factors causing inadequate ore zone definition were: 1) inappropriate location of drill holes relative to the ore zones, 2) presence of stopes from previous mining, 3) sampling and assaying errors, and 4) smoothing of the ore zone boundaries during ore reserve estimation. Infill drilling strategies were evaluated to determine the efficiency with which a given drill pattern defined the known ore zones. A drilling strategy was developed which improved ore zone delineation when compared to techniques which maintained uniform drill spacing.

During any rush hour, tens of thousands of automobiles clog the main highways leading into or out of our large cities. Inevitably one or more cars stall or plow into another, causing a momentous traffic jam. Traffic backs up for miles as drivers try to maneuver around the roadblock. As commuters, we grin and bear the inconvenience, rationalizing the delay as part of the price one pays to live in a modern society. The truth of the matter is that the engineers planning the roads have the know-how to build adequate bypass alternatives into their design. The problem is one of economics -- can the cost of eliminating roadblocks be justified? Engineers designing solutions to complex materials handling problems for modem distribution centers are just now beginning to ask this question in relation to their work. Unfortunately in many instances, it has taken an expensive "traffic jam" to bring this question to the front. In these cases, a seemingly practical system promising an attractive return on investment -- using the latest equipment and computer controls -- was designed and installed. Everything went according to plan until one day a breakdown occurred. .Product flow stopped, and management realized it was at the mercy of the "machine." In such situations, management had assumed it could minimize the risks of the breakdown by injecting extra manpower to operate the system manually and pay the associated costs. What it had not recognized is that manual intervention is nearly impossible with sophisticated systems. Thus, too often -- and sometimes too late -- management found itself footing a very high bill for losses incurred because of major production stoppages and missed customer shipments.

This paper presents a 20-year global account of tunneling in gassy ground demonstrating high probability of schedule delays, cost overruns, worker injuries and fatalities. Causes of these failures are systemic. Gas is seldom characterized in terms relevant to design of effective ventilation systems. Control measures deployed in tunnels are often based on outdated industrial safety codes. A change in approach is needed. This paper describes how to perform a desk study to determine if field investigation for gas is warranted, and lists the content of an effective characterization of gas in a geotechnical report.

The Fortitude skarn near Battle Mountain, NV is currently one of the largest producing gold skarns in the world. It contains about 11 Mt (12 million st) of minable ore grading 5.14 g/t (0.149 oz per st) and is the distal portion of a continuous skarn system in the Copper Canyon area centered on the Eocene Copper Canyon granodiorite porphyry. Calcsilicate compositions, opaque mineralogy, and the high gold grades are atypical of other base metal skarns (iron, Fe; copper, Cu; lead-zinc, Pb-Zn; or tungsten, W). The Copper Canyon skarn is systematically zoned from a garnet (AD 70-100) dominant, pyroxene (HD 20-45) subordinate zone, with major Cu mineralization, adjacent to the intrusive (West ore body), to a pyroxene (HD20-100) dominant, garnet (AD90-100 cores. AD 30-60 rims)subordinate assemblage, with major Au, near the distal marble front (Fortitude ore body). An extensive biotite ± diopsidic pyroxene ± kspar alteration halo surrounds the pyroxene > garnet gold-bearing skarn and represents the early stages of metasomatic alteration. Retrograde alteration is limited in areal extent and intensity, and consists of actinolite, chlorite, quartz, and prehnite. Economic gold mineralization begins in the pyroxene > garnet zone and continues to the marble front, a distance of 1 to 1.5 km (0.6 to 0.9 miles), respectively, from the plutonic contact. The opaque mineralogy in this gold zone includes pyrrhotite, arsenopyrite, marcasite, minor chalcopyrite, galena, sphalerite, argentite, hessite, hedleyite, volnyskite, and native bismuth and gold. The pyrite-pyrrhotite geothermometer yields temperatures that range from 450° C to 300°C (842° F to 582° F) and the electrum-argentite-sphalerite geothermometer yields temperatures which range from 290°C (554° F) at the marble front to about 420°C (788° F) more proximal to the intrusive. Log fS2 calculations from the sulfide assemblages yield values near - 10 with log fO2 values of about -30, in a solution of near neutral pH (5-6). Calculations of metal solubility suggest that the metals were transported as chloride complexes in the proximal skarn but that bisulfide complexes were predominant within the distal gold skarn. Relatively low oxidation states buffered by the carbonaceous to argilliceous, calcareous protolith and subsequent ferrous iron-rich skarn assemblages appear to have increased the gold carrying capacity of this large hydrothermal system.

Coal is the nation's most abundant fossil energy resource and serves as the primary fuel for the U.S. electric-power industry. However, its continued and expanded use is often challenged by the nature and amount of its associated impurities, such as mineral matter, sulfur, and trace elements. The moderate- to high-sulfur content of many U.S. coals is of particular concern today as potentially more stringent regulations requiring further reductions in sulfur dioxide emissions are being considered. The most prevalent method currently employed to control SO2 emissions from coal-burning facilities is post-combustion flue-gas desulfurization. However, physical coal cleaning (a.k.a. beneficiation, preparation) methods can also be effective in removing sulfur and ash impurities from coal prior to combustion. In a typical physical cleaning operation, raw coal is crushed to about 50-mm (2-inch) topsize, and then screened into coarse, intermediate, and fine size fractions. Crushing liberates some of the ash-forming minerals, including the portion of inorganic sulfur (pyritic) not chemically bound to the coal matrix. The percentage of impurities liberated generally increases as the coal particle size is reduced. Coarse- and intermediate-sized coal particles are typically subjected to specific gravity-based cleaning methods, while fine-sized (less than 0.5-mm) coal particles are beneficiated using froth flotation, a technique based on surface property differences. Greater cleaning potential exists at finer sizes because of increased liberation of impurities, but this potential is not fully realized because of inefficiencies associated with fine particle separation using state-of-the-art coal cleaning technologies.

It is not uncommon for overall quality of coal from a mine to deteriorate as the mine is developed or for an improved-quality coal specification to be imposed during the life of the mine. Either of these conditions typically results in management pressuring mine personnel to take greater care in delineating the seam from top and bottom rock. When mining and seam conditions require a portion of the seam to be removed to ensure sufficient rock is removed to meet the quality specification, physical-coal cleaning may become economically competitive with in-pit seam grooming. The additional cost of coal cleaning may, in some cases, be justified by permitting higher recovery of the coal seam than is possible when cleaning the seam with excavators in the pit. This paper compares projected coal cleaning results with present in-pit grooming techniques and reports the economic results.

Refractory copper ores (CROs) in central Africa contain copper minerals that are locked up in a micacious solid matrix or associated with carbonate, sulfide and phosphate minerals. Several researchers have reported that the recovery of copper from CRO material by an acid-leaching process is not economically feasible, due to the presence of excess gangue-acid-consuming minerals such as calcites, dolomite, asbolane and iron oxides. Since the proportion of acid-insoluble copper (CuS) is about 28% of total copper and total free sulfur is extremely small, sulfide flotation was considered unfavorable. Consequently, hundreds of millions of tons of CRO material have been stockpiled specifically at the Nchanga Mine of Zambia. In terms of copper distribution in CRO material, a significant portion of total copper exists as carbonates (39%) and oxides (17%), while 28% of the copper is acid-insoluble (CuS). The rest of the copper is in the form of carbonates (16%) and (hydr) oxides (17%). This means that only about 72% of total copper is recoverable through the non-oxidative acid-leaching process. In this study, batch leach tests were performed on CRO solids (d95 = 95%) to establish the gangue acid consumption values at different feed pH values and to evaluate the leaching characteristics of copper, manganese and iron within the CRO material. Subsequently, continuous leach tests were performed on CRO solids (106 um, 80% passing) using optimum leach conditions derived from batch tests. This paper aims to show that sustainable copper recovery can be achieved by selecting leaching conditions whereby gangue acid consumption (GAC) values become significantly small and the final concentration of manganese and iron in the leach solution are appreciably low.

Many factors -- political, environmental and technological -- will determine the extent to which the United States realizes the potential of its vast coal resources. Not the least of these factors is technogical development including mining, processing and transportation. With regard to processing technology, about 50% of the 800x106 tons of coal mined annually in the U.S. is processed in preparation plants. The purpose of the physical separations accomplished in these preparation plants is to remove ash (present as clays and other oxide minerals) and sulfur 'present mostly as pyrite). Coal flotation circuits for such separations are becoming more important in the processing of minus 28 mesh coal. (1,2,3) For example in the U.S. in 1960, 31 flotation plants processed 26,500 tpd; whereas in 1980, there were 80 flotation plants which processed 78,300 tpd. This corresponds to an annual growth in flotation plant capacity of 10 per year during the past two decades. Coal flotation is based on the natural or induced hydrophobicity of coal particles which are separated from hydrophilic ash and sulfur constituents by attachment to air bubbles. The coal particle/air bubble aggregates are collected in a froth phase which is created by the addition of a suitable frother such as MISC. Without exception, such separations are made in a conventional flotation cell, which, in essence, is a stirred tank reactor with a shrouded rotor to shear the air as it passes through a hollow shaft. The dispersed air bubbles (4.0 mm diameter) are stabilized by addition of the frother. Collision of the air bubbles with, and/or precipitation of the air bubbles on, the coal particles results in the formation of coal particle/air bubble aggregates which rise in the gravitational field and are collected in the froth phase developed at the top of the flotation cell. Restraints on successful separation by this conventional flotation technique are particle size and retention time. Generally it is found that effective flotation is only achieved for particle sizes between 10 and 1000 microns. Further, with respect to retention time, it is found that a nominal retention time of at least 2 minutes is required for successful separations. These facts limit the effectiveness of conventional coal flotation. Coal fines may be lost in the reject stream and disposal is frequently a problem. The retention time required for conventional flotation results in large floor space demands which limit the capacity of the plant.

The deposit, known as the Lakeshore Property, contained an estimated 470 million tons of sulfides and oxides averaging 0.75 percent copper. "The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of reduction temperature, reduction time and binary basicity on the size of metallic iron particles in coal-based reduction products of an oolitic iron ore. The particle size distribution behavior (i.e., cumulative passing percentage and mean size of metallic iron particles) during reduction was investigated in detail. Results showed that the particle size distribution of metallic iron particles was strongly influenced by reduction temperature, reduction time and binary basicity. The cumulative passing percentage and mean size significantly increased with reduction temperature and time in the entire range of the experiments. All curves of cumulative passing percentage versus particle size under different conditions demonstrated a similar trend (continuous increase). The size distribution parameters and mean size slightly increased with increasing binary basicity and significantly decreased when the binary basicity exceeded 1.0. The size of metallic iron particles could be controlled by adjusting the reduction conditions during coal-based reduction.IntroductionThe increasing demand for iron ore coupled with diminishing high-grade iron ore reserves has resulted in the urgent need for innovative technologies in order to use refractory iron ores. Oolitic iron ore is a typical refractory iron ore with tremendous abundance globally. Based on published literature, oolitic iron ore reserves are approximately 140 million tons in Europe, 10 billion tons in China and 66 million tons in Pakistan (Kazmi and Abbas, 2001; Wu et al., 2011; Yu and Qi, 2011; Sun et al., 2013a). Therefore, the efficient exploration and use of oolitic iron ore resources can play a significant role in easing the mineral resource crisis in the iron and steel industry. However, oolitic iron ore cannot be effectively upgraded by traditional beneficiation methods due to its mineralogical characteristics (e.g., low grade of iron, poor liberation of iron minerals and high phosphorus content) (Li et al., 2011b; Sun et al., 2013b).Researchers recently proposed coal-based reduction followed by magnetic separation to recover iron from refractory iron ores (especially oolitic iron ore) and a certain degree of breakthrough was achieved in both theory and practice. In this technology, iron minerals in the ore are directly reduced by coal to metallic iron, which grows into particles of different sizes. After comminution and liberation, metallic iron is concentrated by magnetic separation (Srivastava and Kawatra, 2009; Sun et al., 2013a; Li et al., 2011b; Sun et al., 2013b; Li et al., 2011c; Gao et al., 2013). Sun et al. and Gao et al. used this technology to examine the recovery of iron from oolitic and Bayan Obo iron ores, respectively (Sun et al., 2013a; Li et al., 2011b; Li et al., 2011c). Metallic iron powder with more than 90% iron content was obtained as the final product, which could be used directly in steel production."

Auriferous sulfide ores often contain very finely disseminated gold and other precious metal particles inside the sulfide crystals. The encapsulation of precious metal particles gives rise to the refractory nature of such ores to current extraction methods. As a result, these fractions are frequently lost in the tailings. The purpose of this work was to investigate the feasibility of pretreating these refractory tailings with bioleaching before employing standard extraction techniques such as cyanidation. Leadville gold ore tailings containing auriferous pyrite were first concentrated by froth flotation. The pyrite concentrate was treated for different periods of time with 12 weeks adapted thiobacillus ferrooxidans before cyanide leaching. The bioleaching of the concentrate before cyanide leaching increased the gold extraction from 32% to 95% and that of silver from 48% to more than 98%.

Characterizing exploration prospect potential has aspects that differ from those encountered during ore reserve estimation. One problem is determination of the ore reserve potential prior to acquisition of significant volumes of hard data. The evaluation is subjective and data are usually sparse and of uncertain quality. However, estimations of the ore reserve potential are commonly demanded by management before project funding will be approved. The estimations from several prospects, along with the uncertainties inherent to the estimation, are then used to compare and contrast the potential of several prospects, often with widely varying geologic models.

The reliability of a set of flotation results is key to minimizing project risk, either at the commissioning of a concentrator or at the point of implementing an improvement to an existing concentrator operation. High-confidence flotation testing (HCFT) was developed for this purpose and is part of the list of technologies at various scales used by Xstrata Process Support (XPS) in addressing these projects. The methodology is based on two principles: one, to ensure that the ore sample is representative and has been well-blended and subsampled; two, to perform the flotation tests in sufficient numbers of replicates with appropriate quality controls, so as to improve the reproducibility of the test data. Across ten years of research on this methodology at Xstrata Process Support, Sudbury, several improvements to the HCFT method and complementary connections between sampling and quantitative mineralogy have been developed. Two case studies are reviewed. These show the capability of this system in both optimizing an existing concentrator operation and in serving a new mine scenario. "INTRODUCTION Mine Ventilation has come a long way over the years. The main purpose of mine ventilation is to keep conditions in the mine safe for the worker so that the mine will be productive and profitable. Technological developments to the mine ventilation system itself and the development of mining techniques have helped improve the safety and productivity of the miners and the mine. Most of the developments to mine ventilation and to safety devices came as the result of serious mining disasters. Another effect of those mining disasters, especially in the late 19th century and after, was legislation to set specific safety standards for mines, especially in the underground coal mines. This paper will focus on the connection between mines disasters and the mine safety legislations promulgated because of those disasters. A BRIEF HISTORY OF MINE SAFETY LEGISLATION Mine legislation has a long history in the U.S. dating back well in the 1800’s. However, mine safety legislation is considerably newer. In 1891, the U.S. Congress passed the very first version of mine safety legislations setting up minimum safety standards. By today’s standards, the 1891 legislation was incredibly basic (7). It took a series of horrific mining disasters for Congress to take action a second time. In 1910, Congress established the Bureau of mines. The role of Bureau developed and changed over next 60 years. In 1995, Congress voted to disband it (27). Initially the Bureau was only charged with investigating and coming up with ways to reduce accidents in coal mines. It was not until 1941, when Congress formally allowed Bureau of Mines’ Inspectors into the mines. In 1947, the Congress enacted and adopted a set of federal safety regulations for the inspectors to follow (1). Finally, in 1952 Congress granted the Bureau of Mines the authority to inspect the mines and to issue citations and/or orders of withdrawals. This act was known as the 1952 Coal Act and the penalties were limited to civil penalties. It would take a couple more iterations of mine safety legislation for monetary and criminal penalties to be introduced (10). Up until 1966, mine safety legislation was directed primarily at underground coal mines and surface coal mines. Congress passed the Federal Metal and Nonmetallic Mine Safety Act of 1966, thus providing a set of standards for all mines to follow (1). The 1952 Coal Act was amended again to be the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969. This amendment was the beginning of modern mine safety legislation (13). In 1973, Congress created what can be considered the first ‘version’ of the modern day MSHA (Mine Safety and Health Administration). The initial version was the Mining Enforcement and Safety Administrations or MESA. Congress created MESA to act as the enforcement agency, relieving the Bureau of Mines of that responsibility so they could focus on their initial purpose, the development of countries natural resources (14). As mining industry grew, mine safety and health became a greater concern and priority. More efforts were put in legislating the industry. The Federal Mine Safety and Health Act of 1977 provided the platform for today’s mine safety and health legislation. Under the Federal Mine Safety and Health Act of 1977, also known as the Mine Act, MSHA came into being (1)."

According to recent estimates, nearly 30 percent of the material from underground coal mining in the United States is rejected on the surface as waste. This accumulation of almost three billion tons of coarse and fine coal refuse is primarily from coal cleaning operations. The marketable coal is intermixed with sandstone, clays, shales, and carbonaceous rocks, which must be removed and disposed of in an acceptable manner. The disposal of mineral wastes is a major environmental concern. The most common types of environmental problems associated with coal refuse disposal are acid formation, erosion, and sediment control. Other areas of concern include air and water quality, combustion control, mine sealing, and reclamation. This paper focuses on these topics and attempts to outline special environmental features which can be incorporated into the design and construction of a coal refuse facility. Often these measures can minimize and possibly eliminate the potential environ- mental hazards. It is imperative, however, that these measures be adopted prior to and during construction, because of the relative ease and cost savings compared to post-construction implementation.

An investigation was conducted to determine the minimum number of samples that must be studied by image analysis of polished sections in order to characterize a mill product and to determine the apparent mineral liberation. It was found that a representive polished section cannot be prepared from an unscreened sample that has a wide size range of particles. Similarly individual screened&apos; fractions are not representative of the sample because minerals are partitioned during screening. Consequently the quantities of soft brittle minerals are increased in fine grained fractions and quantities of hard minerals are increased in coarse grained fractions. It is assumed that results obtained by combining data for a series of narrow size range screened fractions (1 Tyler size range) are representative of the sample, and relatively accurate apparent mineral liberation data can be obtained for a mill product by analysing each fraction and combining the data. Somewhat less accurate data would be obtained by analysing a series of screened, fractions that have a wider size range of particles (5 Tyler size ranges). Mineral liberation analyses show that the most reliable apparent mineral liberation in each screened fraction is a value taken from a smooth curve drawn through the lowest points on a graph of % free vs size. A correlation between the apparent mineral liberation in screened fractions and calculated mineral liberations using Kings liberation model is good for sphalerite but not for chalcopyrite and galena.

The results obtained for the selective flocculation or flotation of natural ores do not usually agree with the corresponding properties of the constituent minerals when present alone. This is mainly due to the presence of dissolved mineral species which can interact in many ways with other components in the system and alter their behavior. In this paper, the effect of dissolved species on the flocculation and electrokinetic properties of sulfide minerals is disscussed. Dissolved Fe, Cu and Ni species are found to affect the properties of chalcopyrite, pentlandite, millerite, pyrrhotite and covellite in certain pH range. These effects are interpreted in terms of species adsorption leading to activation or depression of reagents, surface precipitation and complexation of species, etc.
