This paper describes the successful mechanized extraction of coal pillars in 11 panels using the fish-tail method from 2010 to 2017 at Pinoura Mine in India. This method proved its potential of coal recovery with efficient strata control under weak roof due to faster rate of extraction in a single lift. Observations of strata and snook behavior during the field studies in different panels of the mine are included.

The Northeast Boundary Tunnel Project consists of a 23 ft diameter, 27,000 ft long, CSO tunnel, multiple underground connections, and significant surface works within an urban corridor. The NEBT alignment depths range from 60 to 140 ft and includes seven shafts ranging in depth from 77 to 155 ft with diameters varying from about 19.5 to 56 ft, some as in-line connections and others required adits for connection to the main tunnel. This paper focuses on the design and construction of two major underground connections which are the First Street Connector Tunnel and the Mount Olivet Road Diversion Sewer.

"The Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act (MINER Act) of 2006 (PL 109-236, 2006) established the Office of Mine Safety and Health, functioning as the Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) within the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and provided authority for awarding contracts related to the development and implementation of new mine technology and equipment. The OMSHR external contracts program was formed in accordance with the MINER Act and has since issued more than 150 contracts focused on worker health and safety. Initial funding for this program was provided by the United States Congress through two emergency supplemental appropriations and was focused on emergency oxygen supply, communications and tracking, and refuge chambers (also referred to as refuge alternatives). Since the MINER Act, Congress has continued to fund the program through the annual NIOSH mining appropriation. The program was supplemented starting in 2009 with an academic capacity building program directed toward developing university tenure-track faculty and facilities and supporting graduate students in the area of mine ventilation. Ground control was added as an additional focus area in 2011. A short synopsis of each contract is published on the NIOSH Mining website (www.cdc.gov/niosh/ mining/researchprogram/contracts/index.html) and final reports are available in digital form on request. A summary of the progress OMSHR has made over the 10-year period since the Act was published previously (Snyder et al., 2016).External contracts are broadly classified by the following areas:• Communications and tracking.• Emergency response.o Self-escape and breathing air supply.o Refuge alternatives.o Escape and rescue.• Equipment safety.• Fires and explosions.• Ground control.• Mine environmental systems (mine ventilation and atmospheric monitoring).• Worker/workplace health and safety.Contracts are issued under a request for proposal (RFP), through a broad agency announcement (BAA) or under an interagency agreement (IAA). An RFP solicitation includes a specific problem description and a well-defined scope of work to guide the offeror in preparing a bid to conduct the research. Under the BAA several problem areas are described and the offeror develops the scope of work and deliverables for the proposed research. An IAA is very similar to an RFP except it is a contract between two federal government agencies."

"This paper analyzes mine emergency management and rescue practices in German underground coal mines and compares them to those used in the United States. The German mining industry has developed these practices over more than 100 years, and they have successfully managed numerous fire, water inundation and ground control emergencies using these techniques. The authors interviewed German mine emergency professionals about rescue team and emergency operations. These operations were then analyzed to determine which of these German principles would be of interest to United States mine rescue teams. Implementing these programs into United States mine rescue and emergency operations was analyzed. INTRODUCTION Coal mining has become much safer industry than it has been in the past. Advances in safety and health regulations and company polices have improved working conditions for miners all over the world. Even with these advances there is still a need for continued attention to safety and health. It is also important for mine safety professionals to observe practices and procedures in other countries and cultures and learn what and how to apply this knowledge in their own systems. Coal mine rescue has been an integral part in improving coal mine safety. Mine rescue procedures have evolved with time, experience and technology development. Today, coal mine rescue teams are still needed and must be continually trained and prepared for any mine emergency. Although it is hoped that improved mine safety policies and practices will eliminate coal mine disasters in the future, accidents remind us that disasters can still happen today. In May 2014, Turkey experienced a severe coal mine disaster where 301 people were killed [G.Tuysuz, 2014]. Our industry must learn from these incidents, focusing on disaster prevention and making improvements in mine rescue operations. Mine rescue procedures differ from country to country due different regulatory environments and different historical evolution of emergency response. Sharing practices and procedures from one country to another enables learning from different experiences and cultural backgrounds. Sharing is also a way of preserving information, identifying and learning best practices."

Bulkspray cooling has been economically applied in cooling the hot environment of South African gold mines for the past two decades. Its success in that country led to its introduction at Gulf Mineral Resources Co.'s Mt. Taylor Mine in 1981 when increased drifting imposed additional cooling requirements. The bulkspray cooler developed and used at Mt. Taylor has a heat transfer capability of about 500 to 1500 kW. It is compact and portable, designed to be moved as required to maintain working temperatures in the advancing drift faces.

New erosion, corrosion resistant metal, ceramic, and polymer composite technologies are being developed and marketed by Alanx Products L.P. for use in hydrocyclones, pumps, valves, and other applications in mining and minerals processing. This paper will present an overview of the ceramic/metal composite material system and properties developed, which include excellent erosion/ corrosion resistance. Wear data will be shown from a variety of laboratory tests in dry and wet conditions, in aqueous neutral and corrosive environments. Comparisons will be made with a variety of competitive materials currently used in the industries sited. Data will also be presented on field tests with pumps and hydrocyclones in hard rock mining and other abrasive/corrosive environments. Field data from North and South America, as well as Australian mining applications will be highlighted.

With the inauguration of the open pit operation in Bagdad, plans were formulated for a large scale leaching operation. Dump stockpiling was started almost immediately, but actual production was not initiated until the spring of 1961. Like all neophytes, we started something about which, on a commercial scale, we knew next to nothing, either dump preparation or leach procedure, and as a consequence, we are still paying the piper. True, we had been through an extensive laboratory pilot program, but it soon became apparent that there was considerably more to increasing solution volumes than simple multiplication. Had we initially possessed our present acumen, the Cyprus Bagdad plant could be operated more efficiently and at a better profit. During the past several years, the art of dump leaching of copper has improved in many ways, primarily because of the application of scientific principles gleaned from general mining practice. Rigid pH control and the use of atomic absorption techniques for rapid," accurate assaying have probably played a leading role in this respect, although we cannot overlook the other sophisticated electronic controls lending improvement to acid addition and pumping, better piping materials, and lastly, the more efficient use of our pregnant liquors. Thin too, the years of experience have given us a greater understanding of dump behavior in general; and, we can, to a greater extent, measure, predict, and avoid some of the idiosyncrasies inherent in every dump. However, it is my firm belief that we will still be confronted with unexplainable dump behavior as long as we are involved in leaching. We have found our dump to be a wonderful money bank, but one that is capable of yielding a wildly fluctuating profit.

"The aim of this study is to give a better understanding for the performance of the composite material RRS and the synergy effect of its components under different stress regimes and while an excavation face advances during tunneling. The lower part of the Q-system scale (i.e. Q-values of 0.4 or less for a tunnel span of 10m) is commonly used for tunnel applications in softer rock formations. This is implied in the updated Q-chart, where the dimensioning of rock support by using Reinforced Ribs of Shotcrete (RRS) comprises the use of fiber reinforced shotcrete, S(fr), rock bolts and shotcreted beams reinforced with steel rebars. In this study, an effort has been made to simulate RRS in a numerical code and to study its behaviour in a real case study. A double tube, triple lane tunnel in weathered tuff has been chosen as reference material for testing RRS under changing load. A rather extensive parametric study has been run by using the same key input rock mass parameters and three different in situ stress regimes (sH/sv =2, sH/sv =1 and sH/sv =0.5). Changes have only been made to the RRS key input parameters in order to simulate the changing loads during the face excavation process in tunneling. The critical part of this numerical modelling work that is under investigation in this study under each stress regime, is the period just after the excavation: i.e 4 hours; 16 hours after excavation; and finally after the complete curing (28 days) of the cement based components. The RRS are installed in three consecutive numerical steps as follows: a) the application of S(fr) on the rock surface in order to even it up for the RRS application; b) radial bolting; and c) installation of the reinforcing steel rebars, that form the reinforced beam. The results are varying and are strongly dependent on the imposed stress regime and they show in general the following tendencies: The axial forces on S(fr) show that S(fr) is almost overloaded during the first 4 hours in all 3 stages. More particularly: For the case with sH/sv =2 a) the axial forces on S(fr) and on the steel rebars are reduced after 16 hours and 28 days; b) the same is observed on the shear stresses in S(fr) and on steel rebars, they are decreasing after 16 hours and 28 days; and c) the bolts loads are almost unchanged. For the case with sH/sv =1 a) the axial forces on the S(fr) are reduced after 16 hours and 28 days; b) the same is observed for the axial and shear stresses, as well as moments on the steel rebars, they are decreasing after 16 hours and 28 days; and c) the bolts loads are almost unchanged."

Extraction of valuable resources from complex orebodies will become more common. This is obvious for two reasons. First, the cleaner and more readily processed ores have continually been depleted through centuries of mining. Second, new technologies have evolved for effectively handling complex ores. One of these new processes has been in place at Sunshine since 1984. Based on sulfuric acid oxygen pressure leaching with nitric acid as an oxidizer, this patented technology allows silver and copper to be efficiently recovered from a complex sulfide concentrate. As efficient as it is, this process represents novel technology found nowhere else on an industrial scale. As such, a research program was undertaken in 1989 to optimize this leach process and to better understand it. From this study, several potential plant improvements were found and recommended. As a result, two of these options, nitric acid replacement by sodium nitrite and concentrate regrind are now used in day to day operation at Sunshine. Patenting of these changes was recently accomplished (1). Thus, the development, perceived mechanisms, plant integration and potential applicability of this technology will be covered in this paper.

A significant amount of silca is recovered in the rougher stage of anionic flotation of Florida apatite. This recovery, in the past, has been attributed to both entrainment and cation activated flotation. This study shows that by using a transport factor, it is possible to determine the contribution of each mechanism towards silica recovery. Further, it is shown that the concentration of cations in the conditioning water significantly affects both the amount of silica recovered due to entrainment and true flotation. Further confirmation of this phenomenon was obtained by Ca++ doping of the conditioning water and by using a sodium silicate depressant.

Mining is essentially a materials management process where materials are classified, excavated, moved to a desired location, processed at a cost and sold for a price hopefully to generate a profit. ?How much is that cost and can it be reduced?? is the age-old question. The requirement for a paradigm shift with regard to materials movement in search of low-cost production has not just happened by chance but, rather, has been driven by agents of change that include mining companies, consultants, governments and equipment suppliers. During the past 100 years of mining, surface mining technology has involved humans with hand tools, humans with machinery and unmanned automated equipment. In the past 50 years, surface mining technology has evolved and now takes the form of trucks and loaders (TL), in-pit-crushing conveying (IPCC) and autonomous haulage equipment (AHS).

The recession that began in late 1980 has proved to be not only prolonged and severe, but in certain ways unique in its effect on the mineral industries among the periods of economic slowdown experienced in the Western world since the end of World War II. This time almost all minerals have been affected. In previous business turndowns, by contrast, some mineral sectors have with-stood economic adversity well. They experienced little or no adverse effect-thanks either to a strong secular expansion in the markets for their particular product or to specific factors that caused demand to be well maintained. For example, aluminum, molybdenum, and nickel are three metals that enjoyed extraordinary growth in applications during the years 1946-1973. These metals were little affected during the recessions that occurred in that era. Similarly, coal did not suffer a pronounced drop in sales in the 1974-75 turndown because, with the price of oil rising sharply, a switch away from oil and back to coal was clearly indicated for some energy-intensive applications. Oil itself was largely impervious to the ups and downs of the business cycle until very recently. And the precious metals, gold and silver, have often been regarded as benefiting from reduced economic activity because labor becomes more available, productivity rises, and operating costs diminish. In the current recession, however, no major mineral has escaped the broad trend. The secular growth factors that were previously so evident for aluminum, molybdenum, and nickel have disappeared, at least temporarily. The stable pricing behavior that previously characterized all three of these commodities has been replaced by extreme price weakness and apparent inability of the major producers to continue their roles as market leaders. Coal and oil both have suffered from a sharp drop in energy requirements. There are those who now anticipate a collapse of the market control over oil prices so clearly exercised by OPEC since 1973. If oil prices are no longer effectively controlled by the governments of the exporting countries, then coal prices are also certain to be affected. And the combination of high interest rates, tight money, and a change in public perceptions of precious metals put the skid under gold and silver quotations in 1981 and early 1982. Although inflation has been viewed as the scourge of most Western countries ever since the oil crises of 1973-74, prices-in constant dollars-of most minerals have not risen. On the contrary, with the exception of the precious metals and oil, for most minerals the prices that prevailed at the end of 1982 were close to the levels of the Great Depression of the 1930s in constant dollar terms. Table 1 compares prices for copper, lead, zinc, and aluminum at the end of 1982 with the average prices in 1934, stated in constant 1967 dollars. This emphasis on prices for mineral commodities reflects the fact that profits of mining enterprises vary directly with the level of prices. Manufacturing and retailing enterprises march to a different tune. They establish sales prices based on costs. Their profits tend to vary with volume. Commodities are for all practical purposes fungible, that is the advantages of known brands in marketing manufactured goods have little application in a commodity market. Thus the individual seller of minerals is unable to establish his sales prices. Except where a monopoly is present, he must sell at the going market. His option is to abstain from selling if he finds the price unremunerative. In past recessions, some mineral producers chose to do precisely that-either accumulating a substantial share of their output in inventory or, in prolonged downturns, abstaining from production. During the current recession, however, private-sector mining companies did not have the option of accumulating inventories to any great extent. Capital costs for new mineral projects or for expansion of existing facilities have escalated at an alarming rate since the early 1970s. Added to this has been the heavy cost of installing pollution control or safety equipment to comply with the regulations adopted in most industrialized countries (and particularly the United States) since 1968. The consequence has been that the financial position of most major mineral enterprises in mid-1980 was already strained. To finance increased inventories meant incurring additional funded debt at high interest costs, thus impairing the concern's credit rating. Management Choices Private-sector managements have had to face up to the alternative of either continuing to produce at an unchanged rate and marketing output at unremunerative prices or reducing output. Mine productivity, measured by the output of minerals per manshift, depends on a number of factors including physical conditions of the minable seam, type of mining equipment, management techniques, worker attitudes and governing jaws and regulations. The greatest scope of improving productivity lies, perhaps, in modifying physical conditions to an advantage and using highly productive equipment. In the case of coal mines, increased productivity can be achieved by (i) obtaining prior knowledge of the mineable property, e.g., the grade and thickness of, the coal seam, presence of sand channels, faults, etc., (ii) eliminating conditions that hamper production, e.g., high emissions of methane and water, and (iii) using more productive mining techniques. Conoco/Consol's (Conoco Inc. and Consolidation! bal Company, a fully-owned subsidiary) horizontal drilling system was developed with the hove objectives in mind. It can drill 75 to 1001 in diameter boreholes to depths of more than 600 1 and maintain the borehole in a preselected horizon. Such boreholes can be utilized for premining exploration of the coal seam, for removing methane and water and in devising mining techniques with high productivity. The purpose of this paper is to describe the horizontal drilling system briefly and to discuss its applications in the above-mentioned- areas.

This paper describes the slope stabilization procedure at Cauê Mine, Companhia Vale do Rio Doce - CVRD, Itabira, State of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Cauê Mine, is a large open pit, to produce about 41 million tons of iron ore during 1974, and an intensive program of investiga Lion was carried out to provide the basic data for stabilizing its slopes, The ultimate rock slope in the W area will be about 400 m high with dipping angles decreasing gradually from top to bottom of the pit. The investigations started in 1969 and since then many geologists and engineers, from both CVRD and Geotécnica S/A., assisted by international consultants, have given their contribution to the achievement of solutions. It is hoped that this paper may contribute to the slope stability of other mines in tropical climate.

Hand-transmitted vibration (HTV) exposure is associated with various health risks for operators of mobile mining equipment (MME). The case–control research was conducted to determine the musculoskeletal disorder (MSD) risks associated with exposure to HTVs in the exposed (case) and non-exposed (control) groups. HTV readings were measured at the interface between the hand and the steering device using the SV 105B triaxial hand accelerometer connected to the SV106 human vibration analyzer involving 40 MME operators in accordance with ISO 5349:2001 guidelines. A questionnaire survey was also carried out among both the study groups using Cornell Musculoskeletal Discomfort Questionnaire. The European Union's 2002/44/E.C. was used to assess the health risks posed to the MME operators. Twenty-eight out of the 40 MMEs were generating HTVs exceeding the stipulated daily limits of vibration, putting 70% of the operators at increased risk for developing MSDs. The case group was found to have an elevated risk of exposure with odds ratio (OR) 7.56 (95% confidence interval (CI), 1.159, 49.39) and OR 12.80 (95% CI, 2.436, 67.285) times more likely than the control group to suffer discomfort in the left shoulder and left wrist, respectively, indicating increased risk of exposure to HTV. Additionally, cases had elevated risk associated with exposure to tobacco, OR 9.35(95% CI, 1.856, 47.129) compared to those who did not use tobacco. MSDs were more prevalent in the case group compared to the control group. This observation was validated by the field investigations and the responses of MME operators to the questionnaires.

The development of a new means of measuring the relative abrasivity of a slurry came about by necessity in 1967 during a full scale loop test of a 560 H.P. reciprocating pump handling magnetite slurry. In order to evaluate the life of expendable fluid end parts, the question of the amount of attrition in a re-circulated slurry had to be considered. An expected reduction in abrasivity as a result of this attrition would certainly give erroneous data on a parts life test. There- fore, some means of measuring such change in abrasivity became imperative. Several test methods were investigated1 but it was felt that these did not fully represent the wear due to back and forth rubbing action associated with a reciprocating pump. A "rubbing block" device used some years ago to determine the quality of hard facing materials was recalled, along with its shortcomings, in that an attempt was made to suspend a small percentage of abrasive particles in a colloidal viscous "mud". Erratic results were attributed to the fact that it was difficult to maintain a consistent slurry concentration under the metal wear block and the reciprocating speed was not great enough to maintain good agitation.

The loading characteristics of gold-bromide species onto activated carbon were evaluated using a batch system. The overall loading of gold onto activated carbon was rapid for the first few hours, but it continued without cessation as a result of the reduction of gold. Therefore, conventional equilibrium considerations were not applicable. Although loading continued slowly after several days, an abnormally high, loading capacity value of 10-12 meq/g carbon (650-800 kg Au/t) could be attained in 72 hours. The loading of gold-bromo species by activated carbon was by the mass transfer of (AuBr4)- species to the external surface to be reduced to metallic gold by carbon. Elution of gold from loaded carbon was feasible provided the carbon had not been loaded to high capacity values. If loading is carried to high levels, complete elution becomes impractical, and the gold may be recovered by ashing the carbon. For the high loading capacities observed, this option would appear to be cost effective. The effect of several variables on the loading capacity of the activated carbon for gold-bromo species is discussed.

CORESafety ‘One of the best’Launched by NMA in 2011 and moving forward ever since, CORESafety is driving continuous improvement in safety and health performance among participating industry companies by shifting from a command-andcontrol regulatory approach to a risk-based systems approach built on the Plan-Do-Check-Act model (Fig. 1).Considered an exemplary safety and health management system, NMA’s CORESafety system helps mining operators change their approach to safety and health management by enhancing the safety and health culture throughout their organizations. Although it is challenging to consistently and completely control all the factors and variables occurring in daily mining operations, experience has shown that applying systematic controls to as many variables as possible is the most successful approach for improvement in mining safety and health.When embarking upon the development of the CORESafety framework, NMA’s leadership set an ambitious goal to eliminate fatalities and reduce the injury rate 50 percent in five years, or the “0-50-5” goal. While the goal has not been met yet, the steady progress has been extraordinary with fatalities among participating companies dropping 45 percent during the period 2011-2015 (Fig. 2). Data also demonstrate that, as participating companies increase their level of implementation, total injury rates have also declined (Fig. 3).In a September 2015 interview with NMA, Penn State University mining engineering Professor Jeffrey Kohler praised CORESafety as “an inspired and timely program that brings together key elements to achieve safety and health goals.”"

A systematic, balanced and inclusive formulation of the vast input data for mine design is presented. Since the quality of this statement severely influences subsquent design it is extremely important to senior mining engineers and the profession-at-large. If unfocussed, chaos can result along with serious ommisions. The basic categories, each a traditional one are: 1) Natural Conditions (geology and geography), 2) Company Capabilities (monetary and managerial), 3) Public Domain (regulations, contracts, good will, etc.) and 4) State of Art (mining engineering professionalism). To further reduce the data additional organizing principles were used: the distinctions of mining (vs. civil) engineering, proceeding from the general to particular, the basic engineering dimensions, and separating dependent from independent variables. The results are a unique and unified corpus, which anticipates the mine design procedure.

INTRODUCTION The occurrence of the radioactive element radium, [2gg~a], often in trace amounts, in the crust of the earth gives rise to a flux of the daughter product radon, ['ii~n], across the earth-air interface. This so-called exhalation process has been studied by many investigators [KO 45, Kra 64, Pe 66, Wi 741] over several decades. In the earlier investigations the exhalation process was studied in a purely geophysical context, but over the last 20 years it has been realized, that under certain conditions the exhalation may be intense enough to also have radiological implications. This is for example the case where relatively radium-rich wastes or by-products, like uranium mill tailings and phospho-gypsum, are stored in larger quantities. In order to be able to predict the radiological impact on the environnent it is necessary to know the rate of exhalation of radon from the surface of the exhaling material. Usually the determination of these exhalation rates has been done by measurements in situ directly upon the accumulated material [~le 74, Ha 791. Although such field measurements have the obvious merit of dealing directly with the full scale problem, the results are often lacking in generality, making predictions for other situations difficult or even impossible. The present paper describes some results of an investigation where it is attempted from laboratory measurements on samples of limited size to obtain material parameters, which are suited for extrapolating and predicting the radiational behaviour of larger accumulations of the material. THEORY Let us consider a sample of a radon exhaling material enclosed in a container with a dead space volume, Vd, and initially containing radon free air. If the total exhalation rate (number of atoms per unit time) is c, the radon concentration (number of atoms per unit volume) N will initially grow with the time t according to the equation [ ] where [R] is the decay constant of radon. As the concentration (or activity) in the container grows, the net exhalation rate will slow down because of back diffusion, and, furthermore, radon atoms may be removed from the container, not only by radioactive decay, but also by diffusion leakage [JO 81 ]. If, however,only the initial. part of the activity growth curve is considered, the total exhalation rate, c, is given by [c = r•Vd(2) where r is the initial activity growth rate in the container. Let the container be cylindrical with an inner cross-section S and filled to a height L with a radon exhaling material with the specific mass p, the porosity E, the radon pore production rate f and the diffusion length i.
