In 2008, the authors developed a methodology for identifying underground coal mines at high risk for major-hazard events. It focused on major hazard-related violations of safety standards associated with high-risk conditions. Later, using a sample of 103 mines with 2008 and 2009 data, injury measures and U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) citation data were combined into a safe performance index (SPI). The SPI was used to assess the relative safety-related risk of mines, including by mine-size category. In this paper, comparisons are made of SPI-associated, normalized safety performance measures across mine-size categories, with emphasis on small-mine safety performance as compared to large and medium-sized mines. In 1989, an autogenous grinding task force was formed to study potential autogenous grinding circuits to replace the existing semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) at the National Steel Pellet Plant in Keewatin, MN. Pilot plant test work, performed by the Hanna Research Center (HRC), indicated that fully autogenous grinding with pebble extraction and crushing could be incorporated into the existing circuits. In 1990, one of the existing 10 grinding mills was converted for an in-plant test incorporating pebble crushing. Full-scale test work were conducted in 1990 and 1991. They verified the pilot plant projections with primary mill throughputs from the fully autogenous circuit using pebble crushing being greater than throughput of the existing SAG mill circuits. The plant produces 5 Mt/a (4.9 million ltpy) of iron ore pellets from 17.6 Mt (17.3 million It) of crude taconite. Crude ore is single-stage crushed by gyratory crushers. Primary grinding is performed by 10 semi-autogenous wet grinding mills. Secondary grinding is performed by five ball mills. Induration is with an Allis Chalmers grate-kiln pelletizing system. The primary grinding circuit consists of 108.2-m-diam x 5.5-m long (27 ft-diam x 18-ft) SAG mills. The mills are charged with 127 mm-diam (5 in.diam) steel grinding balls at from 3% to 5% by volume. Ball consumption rate is about 0.55 kg/t (1.25 lbs/lt) of crude ore feed to the mill. Each SAG mill is powered by two 2.6 MW (3500 hp) motors drawing 5450 kW (7300 hp) at 76% of critical speed. The mills are grate discharge with 16 mm (0.6 in.) slotted grate openings when new. The mill discharge is sized on a trommel screen having 4.5 mm (0.2 in.) openings. The plus 4.5 mm (+0.2 in.) oversize material is returned to the discharge end of the mill by a reverse screw auger located in the center of the trommel. The -4.5 mm (-0.2 in.) trommel screen undersize is pumped to magnetic cobbers.

Inactive underground mines now provide essential habitat for more than half of North America's 44 bat species, including some of the largest remaining populations. Thousands of abandoned mines have already been closed or are slated for safety closures, and many are destroyed during renewed mining in historic districts. The available evidence suggests that millions of bats have already been lost due to these closures. Bats are primary predators of night-flying insects that cost American farmers and foresters billions of dollars annually, therefore, threats to bat survival are cause for serious concern. Fortunately, mine closure methods exist that protect both bats and humans. Bat Conservation International (BCI) and the USDI-Bureau of Land Management founded the North American Bats and Mines Project to provide national leadership and coordination to minimize the loss of mine-roosting bats. This partnership has involved federal and state mine-land and wildlife managers and the mining industry. BCI has trained hundreds of mine-land and wildlife managers nationwide in mine assessment techniques for bats and bat-compatible closure methods, published technical information on bats and mine-land management, presented papers on bats and mines at national mining and wildlife conferences, and collaborated with numerous federal, state, and private partners to protect some of the most important mine-roosting bat populations. Our new mining industry initiative, Mining for Habitat, is designed to develop bat habitat conservation and enhancement plans for active mining operations. It includes the creation of cost-effective artificial underground bat roosts using surplus mining materials such as old mine-truck tires and culverts buried beneath waste rock.

The current interest in sulfur recovery from coal measures is indicated by a recent report prepared for the Public Health Service (1) It was noted that the concentration of pyrites to a product containing 42-48 percent sulfur should be relatively easy with present equipment. It was also pointed out that a utility potential exists for the high-grade iron concentrate which results as a by-product of the consumption of pyrites in the acid-making process. However, economics, marketing characteristics, location, transportation, pyrite levels and coal characteristics all strongly influence the feasibility of fostering industrial development of such processes. The extent of pyrite recovery and product quality is intimately related to pyrite particle size and its degree of liberation, a consideration usually given greater emphasis in metal ore preparation than in processing coals. Consequently, fine crushing to nearly 20 mesh probably will be essential for maximum practical processing. It appears that any process separating pyrites from a coal must involve a reprocessing of the normal preparation plant refuse, although some yields can be attained from certain existing operations as products from, a shaking table or a jig. Further, the existence of millions of tons of coal refuse cannot be ignored as a mined source of raw materials. The recovery of saleable products from such wastes, although untried on a large scale under current conditions, not only offers a realistic source of sulfur but also would achieve a secondary refuse with the minimal contents of substances which incite and propagate the burning of organic and inorganic combustibles. These silicate materials, thus beneficiated, also offer some potential for economic utilization. Some significant tonnages of pyrites have been produced from coal measures in the past, but the experience was, in general, not consistent with current coal preparation practice. The processes involved did not include cyclones and heavy media; nor were they carries out under the sociological environment concerned with pollution as exists today.

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are being explored by researchers to measure concentrations of gas emissions in situations where such measurements are otherwise extremely difficult to obtain, such as NO and NO2 (NOx) emissions from surface mine blasting. Recently, countries have imposed or are planning to impose surface blasting gas pollution regulations, which creates a need for an improved understanding of UAV-based gas measuring systems. The experiments detailed in this paper were performed to determine if airflow generated by the rotors, also known as downwash, unnaturally alters concentration measurements. Downwash turbulence could create locations of varying pressure, which could affect concentration. A UAV fitted with gas sensors was attached to a stand in a controlled environment containing a mixture of NOx. The gas sensor measuring points were placed at various distances on and from the UAV body to evaluate downwash effects on gas concentration. Results show that the presence of downwash turbulence causes no statistically significant changes to concentration measurements at any distance or direction from the UAV. Based on these results, it is possible to use a UAV-mounted gas monitor to measure concentrations without concern for downwash interference, provided the UAV and measuring point are entirely contained within the gas cloud.

The White Pine Mine is situated in the southwestern portion of the Keweenaw Peninsula of Upper Michigan approximately 6 miles south of Lake Superior (Fig. 1). It is east of the Porcupine Mountains in Ontonagon County. The ore deposit is about 70 miles southwest of the famous native copper deposits of the "Copper Country" lying northeast of Houghton. Geological conditions are different at every mine and create a special set of problems in dilution control. This paper is largely intended to describe the techniques applied in mine dilution control (grade control) at White Pine, and present results of the program. For necessary background information major geologic characteristics of the deposit, particularly those that exert control over the distribution of ore, are briefly discussed. Mining methods are described in considerable detail since applied grade control techniques are adapted to these.

Nonspecific airway hyperresponsiveness is a central feature of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and has been associated with atopy in the presence of environmental exposures such as smoking. Coal miners may develop emphysema and lung function decrements related to their dust exposure. To investigate the roles of airway responsiveness and atopy in these effects, we evaluated the relationships among smoking, a history of hay fever or seasonal rhinitis, and airway responsiveness (AR) in a group of underground bituminous coal miners and nonmining controls. All subjects had a normal baseline percent predicted FEV1. Increased airway responsiveness was defined as a 15% or greater decrease in FEV1 following methacholine inhalation. 85 miners (45%) and 99 controls (46%) were current smokers, 59 miners (31%) and 55 controls (26%) were lifetime nonsmokers; former smokers were excluded from further analysis. Overall, 25% of 144 miners included in this analysis had increased AR, as opposed to 29% of 155 controls. Thirty-seven percent of both miners and controls had a history of seasonal rhinitis. Significantly fewer miners (15%) had a history of hay fever compared to controls (25%, p< 0.05). Figure 1 shows the prevalence of increased airway responsiveness in miners and controls in association with hay fever. In both smoking and non smoking miners the presence of a hay fever history was significantly (p < 0.05) associated with a higher prevalence of increased AR. Little effect was seen in smoking (p = 0.827) and nonsmoking (p = 0.940) controls. Figure 2 shows a similar higher prevalence of increased AR associated with symptoms of seasonal rhinitis in the mining group. This was significant (p < 0.01) only in the smoking miners. No effect was noted in the controls. These data suggest that the association of a history of hay fever or seasonal rhinitis symptoms with increased airway responsiveness may be more common in coal mining, compared to non-dusty occupations. Although the implication of these data are unclear, further study of miners with a history of hay fever or seasonal rhinitis is warranted. "The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), a concept that combines sensor networks and control systems, has been employed in several industries to improve productivity and safety. U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) researchers are investigating IIoT applications to identify the challenges of and potential solutions for transferring IIoT from other industries to the mining industry. Specifically, NIOSH has reviewed existing sensors and communications network systems used in U.S. underground coal mines to determine whether they are capable of supporting IIoT systems. The results show that about 40 percent of the installed post-accident communication systems as of 2014 require minimal or no modification to support IIoT applications. NIOSH researchers also developed an IIoT monitoring and control prototype system using low-cost microcontroller Wi-Fi boards to detect a door opening on a refuge alternative, activate fans located inside the Pittsburgh Experimental Mine and actuate an alarm beacon on the surface. The results of this feasibility study can be used to explore IIoT applications in underground coal mines based on existing communication and tracking infrastructure.IntroductionThe U.S. approach to health and safety in mining has historically been reactive in the sense that health and safety regulations and mandates have traditionally been passed as a result of tragic mining accidents. An example of this is the Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act (MINER Act) of 2006, which was passed as a result of several mining accidents where tracking of and communication with underground personnel were severely limited. While this reactive approach has led to the development and implementation of highly impactful safety interventions and safety practices, there exists a technological revolution that can shift the paradigm toward a proactive approach based on preventative methods: Internet of Things (IoT).IoT is the network of physical objects, or “things,” embedded with electronics, sensors and connectivity to enable that network to achieve greater value and service by exchanging data with the manufacturer, operator and/or other connected devices (Atzori, Iera and Morabito, 2010; Gubbi et al. 2013). It should be noted that IoT has been defined from various perspectives, and hence numerous definitions exist in the literature. The apparent ambiguity of the IoT definition might be due to the fact that IoT is syntactically composed of two terms: the Internet and things. The first word pushes toward a network-oriented vision, while the second tends to put the focus on generic objects. The traditional Internet can be viewed as an internet of computers, so things connected to the Internet are computers only. IoT extends the internet by allowing other generic things that are commonly found in daily life, such as refrigerators and cars, to be interconnected through the Internet, thus creating a bridge between the virtual world and the physical world"

Computer based dispatching in open pit truck haulage operations yields many benefits of current interest to mine management. The key tangible benefit is a substantial productivity increase with a given fleet of equipment or, alternately, a significant reduction in equipment required to meet production quotas. Other tangible benefits, depending on the operation, include minimizing rehandle, meeting several blending constraints simultaneously and ensuring a target plant feed rate. Intangible benefits include production forecasting, performance comparisons of trucks or shovels of different manufacture and extensive on-line report generation. Recent advances in mini and micro computer hardware and software and solid state electronics permit design and implementation of system features not feasible even a few years ago. Here we discuss many of these recent developments with emphasis on system aspects and dispatching algorithms.

Recent developments in the design of concentration plants have reflected the increased recognition that has been given to the economic and metallurgical advantages of autogenous grinding. This has manifested itself in the increasing adoption of primary auto genous grinding in iron ore &apos;beneficiation plants in North America. Table 1 lists eleven major iron ore beneficiation plants which have either been put in operation since 1961 or are under construction at present. Seven out of these eleven plants have adopted primary autogenous grinding. Four of them have coarse grinding mills (8 to 14 mesh) and three have fine grinding primary circuits (48 to 65 mesh). Their nominal capacity totals 26. 2 million ltpy of concentrates or pellets, representing very nearly 75% of the aggregate capacity 135. 3 million ltpy) of the eleven concentrators listed. For a long time there was a tendency to consider that primary autogenous grinding was only applicable to suitable coarse grained ores, However, extensive testing of a very wide variety of ores, and actual operating performance in several commercial plants, seem to have established beyond reasonable doubt, that the majority of mineral ores which the beneficiation engineer may be called upon to process can be ground autogenously. The basis for the selection of autogenous or conventional grinding mills, becomes principally economic and depends on the liberation characteristics of the ores under consideration and their relative hardness and grindability.

It has been said that good things come in threes. In the case of screening for mining and quarry operations, profit comes in three distinct phases: layered, basic and sharp screening. But how good they are ? whether they maximize efficiency and improve the potential for success ? depends on having the right screen media on the deck for each of the three phases. A relatively new method for achieving that goal is a blended screen media approach that incorporates the ideal screen media for each phase and the ideal mix of media for the process overall. The goal in implementing a blended solution is to find the optimal combination of open area and durability. If this combination is found, maximum product quality and profits will be realized by increasing efficiency of classification while minimizing downtime and maintenance costs.

The production of ultrafine slurries and powders is possible with small media made out of Si02, A1203, Fe203, Zr03 or other raw materials due to the fact that since approximately 12 years from now, entirely new machines have been developed which allow to use this small media for the production of ultrafine pigments. Basically we distinguish between two grinding methods which are: A.) Dry Grinding with Air Classification: This method is used for more than fifty years but only since four years this technology is realized with small grinding media. Many problems like cooling, abrasion, control of the media flow, separation media from product, grinding media recycling etc. had to be resolved before it was possible to get in full production with this new system. Hereafter a flow-sheet of such a TRZK mill with an air classifier especially designed to produce end products with a top size between 2,5 and 3,0 micron and with an average particle size between 0,3 and 0,5 micron.

Since plant start-up in January 1983, Golden Sunlight Mines, Inc. has implemented several process changes and improvements. Among these are a pulp preaeration circuit and a sand tailings retreatment circuit. The purpose of the preaeration circuit is to reduce reagent consumption during gold dissolution. The sand tailings retreatment circuit was added to recover and process separately pyrite concentrate to maintain acceptable overall gold recoveries with the more refractory sulfide ores. Research and plant operating data along with process and improvement descriptions are presented.

Effective risk management in major subsurface projects involves ways to mitigate adverse impacts to final design and construction approaches due to changed subsurface conditions. An Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) collaborated with Observational Method will be an effective contractual tool to address risk developed due to encountering differing site conditions. Observational Method (OM) can further be supported with artificial intelligence (AI) technologies with automated data-driven decision-making features in risk mitigation and implementation of proper design and construction approaches. This paper presents collaborative applications of ECI, OM, machine learning, and risk baselining in risk management and productivity enhancement in tunneling projects.

The two Agrico Chemical Company self unloading Phosphate Rock barges put into service in 1976 operate at over their design carrying capacity. Each barge now carries 26,000 short ton instead of the planned 25,000 short ton at 32 foot of draft. They are in service between Agrico&apos;s Tampa, Florida Terminal and the Donaldsonville, Louisiana Fertilizer Complex, moving a total of 2,500,000 short tons each year. This was the first use of the Parascrew design for a marine application. The barges, with their 3,000 STPH unloading and matching loading rate is the vital link in this total transportation and handling system. Rock is moved from the Pierce, Florida Mines through the Tampa Big Bend Terminal, across the Gulf of Mexico, and up the Mississippi to the Agrico Faustina Phosphoric Acid Plant 30 miles below Bacon Rouge, Louisiana. The trip from the terminal to the plant is 600 miles and the turnaround time is just about six days. Seven years operating experience has proved that the system works. Fittingly, the two barges are named the "Faustina" and the "Pierce". They have a beam of 85-feet and are 495 feet long. folded depth is 43 feet, with a ballasted light draft of 19 feet and a typical loaded draft of 32 feet. There are four separated holds with the machinery room located forward of 101 hold. Each hold is 51 feet wide at the coamings with an 18 foot straight section on the side, and a 24 foot long, 600 slope sheet for a 23 foot clear reclaim width at the bottom. The Parascrew in each of the holds is 37 feet long between the bearings and is supported on a 14 inch diameter hollow shaft. The screw pitch varies and the diameter of the flights step up from l&apos;-9" diameter to 2&apos;-6" diameter on the discharge end. By sloping the centerline, a minimum four inch bottom clearance is maintained across the hold. Some bending of the tube does take place.

Within the metal/nonmetal mining sector, fall-related incidents account for a large proportion of fatal and nonfatal injuries that occur in mining in the United States. However, the events and contributing factors leading up to these incidents have not been fully investigated. To help provide a clearer picture of these factors, an analysis of imminent danger orders issued by the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) from 2010 through 2017 at both surface and underground metal/nonmetal mine sites revealed that most orders are associated with fall risks. Of these cases, 84 percent involved the workers not using fall protection, fall protection not being provided or the improper use of fall protection. Fall risks for workers most frequently occurred when standing on mobile equipment, performing maintenance and repairs on plant equipment or working near highwalls. In most cases, a single, basic, corrective action — such as using fall protection — would have allowed workers to perform the task safely. Overall, these findings suggest that a systematic approach is needed to identify, eliminate and prevent imminent danger situations. Furthermore, to protect mineworkers from falls from height, frequently performed tasks requiring fall protection should be redesigned to eliminate the reliance on personal fall protection.

Evaluation of the stability of a structure under given boundary conditions requires accurate knowledge of the state of stress as well as the mechanism of failure at the critical state of stress. This paper represents a part of the research done by N. K. Bohidar during 1965-1968 for his Ph. D. research in Mining Engineering at the University of Utah. It summarizes the determination of internal stress and failure phenomena around cylindrical openings in viscoelastic media subjected to lateral restraint and vertical uniaxial load. The conditions of lateral restraint and viscoelastic nature of the media represent conditions associated with subsurface openings in rocks. The financial assistance provided to the project from the University of Utah Research (Uniform School Fund), W. C. Browning Scholarship Fund, Earth Science Research Fund, and D. C. National income originating compared to physical production for an enterprise or an industry reflects its ability to strengthen the national economy. For a single industrial sector or for an industry this comparison can be useful to reflect changes that may occur in this ability to contribute because of changing supply-demand-income-investment equilibria. A favorable relationship can be postulated by specified economic incentive, and the accompanying technologic input required can be shown. The new index proposes the use of the Federal Reserve Board indexes of production divided by the constant dollar income originating in the petroleum industry which reflects increases or decreases in performance. When compared with other mineral industries and with, total industry, an approximation of relative strength is evident. By constructing three different hypothetical conditions for future petroleum imports, assuming a constant excess capacity requirement for domestic production, and providing an estimate for future domestic demand for petroleum, the impact on the performance index can be shown. Thus, a strong position for the petroleum and natural gas industry can be stated. If this is done, it becomes evident that because of restrictions on cost-price relationships, a drilling program that would provide enough domestic oil to meet demand may not be practicable. By difference, the amount of improvement in methods of production and processing through technologic advancements can be stated explicitly.

To sustain the circular economy, defence applications, and other renewable technologies, recycling rare earth elements (REEs) and other critical elements from their secondary resources is important. This cause has resulted in rigorous research and development for viable extraction and separation of REEs. Previously, Sm-Co recycling has been done with technologies, which fall under the categories of pyrometallurgy, physical separation, and hydrometallurgy. All these methods have limitations associated with energy, cost, and environment. Reportedly, the chemical leaching technology has successfully recovered and separated Sm-Co. Still, it has limitations associated with slow mass transfer and leaching kinetics, and there is a need to intensify the process to make it time efficient. This approach has also adversely impacted the environment by an extensive use of toxic, corrosive, non-selective, and expensive reagents. In this research study, chemical leaching of Sm-Co was performed using this new class of solvents, Deep Eutectic Solvents (DESs), which fall under the category of ion metallurgy. Four different DESs were used, proven to be green, non-toxic, biodegradable, cheap, and selective for cobalt over samarium by 82% leaching conversion. To improve the slow mass transfer and leaching time, this new technology of resonant vibratory mixing (RVM) was also tested. RVM intensifies mixing by establishing near instantaneous, low energy mixing conditions through resonance. It has been shown to improve the adsorption kinetics and was tested for the leaching kinetics. Four combinations of DESs were prepared, which are made up of two quaternary salts: Choline Chloride and Tetra Butyl Ammonium Chloride, and three organic compounds: Oxalic Acid, Urea, and Ethylene Glycol. These combinations were used for chemical leaching of Sm-Co with leaching factors of time, temperature, and type of DESs. After leaching, the samples were tested with and without resonant vibratory mixing with conditions of time, intensity (%), and type of DESs. Samples were analysed with Induced Coupled Plasma - Optical Spectroscopy (ICP - OES). Future work will involve a life-cycle assessment to assess the RVM technology with other conventional mixers, and an extensive study of DES properties to improve selective leaching.

The paper presents the results of a plant test using WEMCO 1 + 1 enclosed flotation machines for inert gas (nitrogen) flotation of by-product molybdenite from copper sulfide concentrate. Copper depressant consumption in the rougher flotation stage was reduced by 68% as reagent consuming oxygen was removed from the flotation air. Unlike other nitrogen flotation systems used in the industry, nitrogen is recovered above the flotation cells and from froth in tails and concentrate streams and recycled, resulting in minimal nitrogen makeup requirement.
