Since the inception of the Ashton (formerly Kalumburu) Joint Venture in 1972 the parties have expended 524 million in exploration for diamonds in the Kimberley region. This has resulted in the discovery of the currently subeconomic Ellendale deposits in 1976/77 and the economic Argyle - Smoke Creek Deposits in 1979/80. In addition to Argyle and Ellendale some 90 kimberlitic and lamproitic bodies have been discovered grouped broadly into three provinces, on the west, east and north margins of the Kimberley block. These bodies range in size from dyke-like features less than one metre in width to pipes with a surface area of 128ha. The bodies with larger surface area are volcanic crater deposits, infilled with air-fall and water deposited tuffs and epiclastic sediments.

"Working on or near water at active, closed or abandoned mine sites is inherently dangerous. Between 1996 and 1999, the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) reported 17 fatalities involving drowning at U.S. metal, non metal and coal mines (MSHA, 2000). Openpit mines which fill with water following mine closure, called pit lakes, present numerous risks to environmental monitoring teams including: a) drowning, b) hypothermia, c) falls to the ground from the top of high walls, d) collapse of unstable access roads, e) rock falls and avalanches from pit walls, f) avalanchegenerated tsunamis traveling across the lake surface and g) rapid degassing events.Some pit lakes are simply not safely or easily accessible for ongoing monitoring. However, the routine collection of water samples from the entire water column on a regular basis is needed to monitor the evolution of water quality over time, verify the accuracy of numerical predictions and, ultimately, manage lake water chemistry and ecological risks. For pit lakes with surface water discharge, regular monitoring is used to appropriately design and adjust water treatment plants in order to produce acceptable site discharge water quality.As a product of these risks and the need for water samples, mining companies spend considerable expense on pit lake safety as part of monitoring programs. This includes training personnel for on water duties and hazards, purchasing or hiring specialized equipment and personnel (such as boats, boat operators, personal floatation devices and cold-water clothing called mustang suits), stabilizing pit walls and maintaining safe access roads to the lake surface and employing spotters who can directly communicate with emergency medical services to watch sampling activities because cell phones and radio signals can be blocked by pit walls. Some sites utilize redundancy to prepare for unexpected incidents and accidents. For example, one Canadian mining company requires two boats on the water during pit lake sampling events, with a third boat on the shoreline, gassed and ready to go. In addition, water samplers are required to hold Marine Emergency Duties training to ensure the entire boat crew is sufficient and competent for the safe operation of the vessel in the event of an accident."

Oil-field brines have been collected and analyzed from Jurassic and Cretaceous rocks in the Mississippi Salt Dome Basin, from Jurassic and Lower Cretaceous rocks, southwestern Arkansas, and from Ordovician and Silurian rocks, southern Michigan. All of these brines are genetically related to evaporites and appear to be brines expelled from halite-bearing rocks, presumably during compaction. The brines in rocks closest to the halite-bearing rocks are uniformly low in lead and zinc suggesting that the metals in metal-rich brines are not acquired within evaporite sequences. The metals in metal- rich brines in Mississippi and in Russia appear to be derived from red beds and may have been originally associated with ferric iron oxyhydroxides. Reduction of these compounds by migrating hydrocarbons appears to release lead and zinc to the associated brines accompanied by the fomation of authigenic ankerite.

On April 21, 1980 the Oil, Chemical and Atomic Workers Union (OCAW) submitted a petition urging the revision of the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) permissible exposure limit to radon daughters in underground mines. This petition asks for: 1. Annual worker exposure to be lowered from the current 4 WLM/year to 0.7 WLM/year; 2. Full economic protection for workers whose exposure exceeds the proposed 0.7 WLM/ year; and 3. The primary means of lowering workers' radiation exposures shall be environmental controls. I will present the scientific rationale for the lower standard requested in our petition to the Department of Labor. [1. Radiation Exposures to Uranium Miners] Two types of radiation exposures are present in the environment of uranium mines: A. [External Exposure] to gamma sources which until 1978 was considered as negligible compared with internal alpha radiation. R. E. Utting (1), in an investigation of three Canadian uranium mines, found levels of exposures adding to an annual dose equivalent of 3 rems (30 mSv)/year. He concluded that gamma dosages may be a major fraction of the maximum permissible dose for many individual miners. The U.S. experience has shown that there is significant gamma exposure in U.S. uranium mines and, therefore, it could contribute to the total radiation exposure to the lungs in combination with internal alpha radiation. Before ventilation improvements in uranium mines, the contribution of external radiation to total lung dosage was relatively small. After improvements in ventilation, the reduction in internal radiation exposure appears to be in 1980 as low as 1/10 of the 1950 dosages. However, ventilation improvements do not affect external gamma radiation. Gamma radiation remains at the same 1950's level, and it represents today a higher proportion of the total radiation burden to the miner's lungs. MSHA regulations (57.5-47) state that if gamma exposure is below 2.0 milliroentgens per hour, then workers are not required to wear gamma dosimeters and cummulative gamma radiation records need not be kept. Assuming an exposure of 1.9 milliroentgens per hour per 173 hours/month for 12 months,a miner would accumulate a dose from external radiation of 3.9 rems/ year. This dosage would, of course, go unrecorded. MSHA, therefore, should consider a downward revision of the external radiation permissible exposure limit of 2.0 milliroentgens/hour. MSHA should make clear that this exposure level, when added to the internal exposure, does not make for sound health physics -even though the measured current levels do not approach 2.0 milliroentgens/hour. B. [Internal Exposure] to alpha radiation is still the larger contributor to lung irradiation in uranium miners. The target organ is still the lung. The parameters to be considered in determining the biological radiation load appear in Table I for radon daughters present in the upper respiratory tract (URT). In this article, the cementation of major impurities from zinc sulphate leach solution by the addition of zinc dust was studied by considering different parameters including time, mesh size, and percentage of excess zinc dust. The output obtained from various experiments was utilized for the design of experiments. A multi-level categorical factorial design with a quadratic model was employed during this study. Results were predicted to minimize the concentration of impurity metals in the solution by altering the parameters. Furthermore, these predicted results were validated by performing another experiment. Successfully, it showed that the predicted and experimental data values were close to each other. The predicted optimized values were 40 min, 100% excess zinc dust, and 300 mesh size for copper; 42 min, 100% excess zinc dust, and 300 mesh size for cobalt; 37 min, 100% excess zinc dust, and 300 mesh size for cadmium; and 34 min, 100% excess zinc dust, and 300 mesh size zinc dust for nickel. At these optimized values, the experimental results showed 99.99%, 55.7%, 99.6%, and 76.6% cementation efficiencies for copper, cobalt, cadmium, and nickel respectively. The statistical design of experiments for the effective cementation of impurities corroborates the economic feasibility of optimizing parameters for the proposed process.

This paper discusses the recently completed organizational development research project, which was addressed to the underground mining industry. The three specific purposes of the project were as follows: (a) to determine whether Organizational Development approaches are feasible in the mining industry, (b) to provide a demonstration that Organizational Development methods can successfully contribute to the safety of underground mines, and (c) to compare the efficacy of classical Organizational Development methods, which are highly trainer- intensive, with trainer-nonintensive management development approaches. The term "Organizational Development" (OD) is here broadly defined as a management intervention for the purpose of assisting an organization with the solution of problems, which are seen by the organization as important. More specifically, we can define OD as a planned effort to improve the effectiveness of an organization through (a) team building and problem solving, which concentrates on the issues of immediate concern to the organization, and (b) efforts to improve organizational communication at all levels of the organization.

"The second survey of global copper leaching operations has been completed, the data published in 1998 has been updated. A survey questionnaire was sent to 40 identified copper leach operations around the world including those leach properties still in operation that responded to the 1998 survey. This paper lists the results of 26 operations that responded to the survey. Selected information from the survey is represented in graphical form. INTRODUCTION Copper leaching was first performed by truck dumping huge monolithic stockpiles of ore and flooding the surface with leach solution or lixiviant with little understanding to the parameters that support optimum recovery of the metal. Heap leaching has evolved into a controlled process whereby a complex low grade ore is stacked in shallow lifts (under 10 m in most cases). The ore is usually crushed and agglomerated, conveyor stacked on an engineered containment system (leach pad) and irrigated in a controlled manner. The lixiviant chemistry is designed to extract the optimum amount of metal from the ore. At first glance, heap leaching appears to be simple in nature. In fact, it is a very complex process. A plethora of technologies such as material handling, environmental control, analytical techniques, solution chemistry, hydrology and many others contribute to the design and operation of a heap leach. Heap leaching requires an inter-disciplinary approach between geologists, mining engineers and metallurgists. Many operational factors affect heap leaching. The process must address climatic factors, flexible operation, quality control before and after leaching, physical characteristics of the ore, geology, mineralogy, reagent consumption, solution application rate and methods (wobblers or emitters), particle size, and favorable conditions for bacterial growth and survival. Predicting, troubleshooting, and optimization of leach recovery is a significant challenge when considering the number of variables involved and their interactions The survey updates many of these key operating parameters to the current state of the art. It should provide the reader an excellent benchmarking summary of these factors on a site-by-site basis."

Mineral exploration is a critical step for success in mining. However, small-scale mining often ignores exploration best practices. This paper introduces the Tichauer-DeTomi Matrix, a tool for assessment of geological uncertainty in small-scale mining. This matrix, which measures the level of compliance of exploration programs in small deposits with industry best practices, has been applied to three small mining projects in Brazil: an artisanal gold mine in the Amazon, a small-scale manganese mining venture in the Northeast, and a small manganese deposit in the Southeast. The application of the matrix resulted in indexes that reflect the actual level of maturity of the mineral exploration program in each project. Therefore, the matrix has shown potential to be an effective tool for assessment of the geological uncertainty remaining in small-scale mineral projects, as well as to identify priority exploration activities for reduction of risks associated with the geological uncertainty. As a risk assessment tool, the TichauerDeTomi Matrix may be helpful in promoting investment and sustained development in and around small mines.

INTRODUCTION The radon problem concerns the radiation exposure from inhaled short-lived radon daughters and the associated risk for the induction or promotion of lung cancer. In several groups of miners which were exposed in the past to relative high radon levels during their underground work, an excess lung cancer frequency has been observed. On the basis of these findings it has to be stated that the inhalation of radon daughters is the most important radiation hazard in mining. Involved in this radon problem in mines are the difficulties to measure the individual radon daughter exposure of miners and to estimate the dose to critical cells and target tissues in the lung from inhaled radon daughters. And finally the reduction of radon levels in mines confronts us with special technical problems which are difficult to solve. Thus the setting of annual limits for the radon daughter exposure of miners alone is not sufficient to guarantee an appropriate standard of radiation safety. Of same importance are the improvement of air monitoring and the optimization of technical protection measures in mines. This has to be kept in mind for the following considerations on exposure limits. The ICRP has recommended in 1959 for the first time a maximum permissible concentration (MPC) for the occupational exposure to radon and its short-lived daughters (ICRP, 1959). This MPC in air was derived from a maximum permissible dose equivalent of 0.15 Sv (15 rem) per year to the epithelium of the large bronchi which was regarded as the "critical tissue". This old MPC-value was derived using a simplified lung model which paid main attention to the dose contribution from the inhalation of unattached 218Po(RaA) atoms. Since this time more realistic dosimetric models for radon daughters have been developed; some of these models will be presented in special papers on this conference. Furthermore in the last 10 - 20 years substantial epidemiological information on the lung cancer risk among several groups of Rn-exposed miners has become available. Taking into account these epidemiological and new dosimetric findings the ICRP has adopted in March this year new recommendations on occupational limits for inhalation of 222Rn, 22ORn and theirshort-lived daughters. This report will be published this year as ICRP Publication 32 (ICRP 1981). The recommended limits for radon daughters were derived from the basic dose and risk limits as they were proposed by ICRP in its new basic recommendations (ICRP Publ. 26, 1977). In the following this basic system of dose limitation is shortly outlined before the special recommendations for radon daughters are described. [BASIC CONCEPTS AND LIMITS] The new basic recommendation of ICRP (Publ. 26, 1977) proceed from the assumption that in the dose range which is relevant for radiation protection, the risk RT of so-called stochastic radiation effects (carcinogenic and genetic effects) in a target tissue T increases proportionally with the mean dose equivalent HT in this tissue: RT = aT HT. If several target tissues are irradiated the total individual (stochastic) risk is given by the sum of risks in these tissues: [R = ?TRT = ? T aT HT]. Thus this concept of individual health detriment takes into account the risk contribution from each relevant tissue. It replaces the old concept of the critical tissue, which neglected the exposure of other tissues. Applying this new concept a dose quantity can be defined which is proportional to the total individual radiation risk from stochastic effects. This so-called "effective dose equivalent (HE)" is given by the sum of the weighted dose equivalents in the relevant tissues: [HE = E wT HT with E wT = 1 T '1] The weighting factor wT of each tissues follows to wT = aT/awB, where awB is the total stochastic risk coefficient for a uniform irradiation of the whole body. For the lung as a single organ comprising several target tissues, the ICRP recommends a total weighting factor w = 0.12 (ICRP 1977/79). This concept of risk or detriment, respectively, has important consequences. To meet the objectives of radiation protection the new ICRP-system of dose limitation is based on the following three principles: 1) The justification of practices involving radiation exposures; no pratice shall be adopted unless it produces a net benefit. 2) The ALARA-principle that all exposures shall be kept as low as reasonably achievable; this requires the optimization of the level of protection. 3) The limitation of individual exposure (annual dose limits). It is important to note that the dose limits for individuals are only one part of this system of dose limitation. Furthermore, these limits cannot be regarded as a boundary between safe and unsafe. They have to be interpreted as the lower boundary of an unacceptable exposure region. This means that in addition to the observance of these basic dose limits it is demanded to optimize the level of protection. The abstract discusses the challenges of coalbed methane development in China due to low coal seam permeability. It highlights protective layer mining as a method to reduce in-situ stress and enhance permeability for improved gas drainage and disaster prevention. The study involves experimental and numerical simulations to analyze gas migration and permeability changes during stress release. It includes a stress-strain-seepage coupled test on coal, development of a mathematical model for coal seepage under mining unloading, and a numerical model based on the Wulan coal mine to explore in-situ stress release, permeability evolution, and gas drainage in an unloaded coal seam. The aim is to demonstrate the effectiveness of combining protective layer mining and gas drainage technology for gas outburst risk elimination.

Phosphate reserves have been and still are a controversial subject. Some published estimates are particularly conservative and have caused concern in government and political circles that southeastern phosphates are a dwindling resource. "Ores and ore bodies" are a function of economics that relate to a time/demand factor. The history of phosphates and other mineral commodities is one of mineral deposits (resources) ever becoming ore (reserves) via a long term logic based on price, supply, and demand factors operating through time and improved technology. Projections indicate that southeastern phosphates are sufficient for several centuries of operations at present production rates.

In this paper we apply these methods to a system consisting of rutile, an organic liquid (benzene, decane, or dodecane) and water. The Parachute Creek Member of the Green River Formation in the Piceance Basin, Colorado, contains vast reserves of oil shale, nahcolite, dawsonite, and other accessory minerals. The dry alkali process of sulfur dioxide removal using nahcolite (naturally occurring sodium bicarbonate) has great potential. A room and pillar mining scheme has been designed to extract a nahcolite zone occurring at a depth of 472 m, from the lease application area of the Yankee Gulch Joint Venture. Geotechnical parameters affecting mine design will be discussed. A preliminary development plan for mining at the rate of 1000 t/d will be described in detail.

The term bauxite was first used by O.P.A.P. Dufrenoy in 1845 for an ore which was discovered by Pierre Berthier in 1821 near the village of Les Beaux de Provence near Arles in southern France. His data suggested that this mineral was an alumina hydrate with two molecules of water. However, it was subsequently shown by thermal analysis that the mineral was a fortuitous mixture of the mono-hydrate and the tri-hydrate. Diaspore had been previously discovered in 1801 and gibbsite in 1822. The term was however retained as a rock name. The name of the village was changed to Les Baux around 1885; Sainte Claire Deville suggested that the mineral name should reflect this, and it was changed to bauxite (Bracewell, 1962, Rkgnier, 1988). Mining of bauxite began around 1860 in the Auriol region in the Bouches du Rhine area in the south of France. This ore was transported toMarseilles by carts and was processed in the Salindres plant, which at that time was the only plant producing alumina using the Deville process and aluminum by the chemical process. During that period white bauxite (low iron content) was particularly sought after for the production of aluminum sulfate, refractory bricks, and quick setting cement. Export of bauxite from France began in 1880 and was initially delivered to Chemische Fabrik, Goldschmischen near Breslau, and to Guilini's Ludwigshafen plant in Germany in 1885. These companies produced alum and aluminum sulfate (RCg- nier, 1988). The next bauxite mining operation was in Antrim County in Northern Ireland in 1873. This was first used for the manufacture of alumina refractory bricks and quick setting cement (Bracewell, 1962). It is important to emphasize that initially almost all of the bauxite which was produced came from France and was mainly used for non-metallurgical purposes. At that time even the production of alumina was mainly for use as a mordant in textile dying. However, with the development of the Hall-Héroult process, the alumina which was available was increasingly used for smelting to aluminum. In spite of this the demand for non-metallurgical bauxite continued to increase and a set of applications were developed. These include refractories, abrasives (including the recently developed proppants), high alumina cements, aluminum chemicals, activated bauxite, and alumina. It became increasingly evident that the high alumina-low alkali raw materials have special advantages. The question however was one of cost benefit. Chin (1989) has pointed out that the non-metallurgical operations have been traditionally grafted on a bauxite/alumina/aluminum industry tree. Incident investigation is of utmost importance in most high-risk industries. This study was undertaken to study the content of past investigation reports to determine the effectiveness of the incident investigations. The study uses a semi-quantitative method to assess the effectiveness of incident investigations in the Ghanaian mining industry by evaluating the quality of past investigation reports. The assessment tool consists of 5 elements with several indicators and rating scales for assessing the quality of an investigation report as a measure of the effectiveness of the investigation. The method was applied to 304 investigation reports of 3 Ghanaian large-scale gold mines, and the results correlated with incidence rates of the mines to determine if any relationship existed. The results showed that the mines differ significantly in the quality of their investigation reports, suggesting differences in the effectiveness of their investigations. In addition, the incidence rates of the mines negatively correlated with some elements of the assessment tool. In general, the method was found useful and revealed areas where improvement is needed. INTRODUCTION The importance of learning from incidents is well documented in the literature. For instance, some scholars regard learning from incidents as important for improving safety [1,2]. Thus, many organisations spend considerable resources in identifying lessons from incidents and subsequently on the process of improvement that follows the identification of lessons. It is therefore important for such organisations to determine the effectiveness of their learning from incidents processes, in order to identify specific areas where improvements are needed, so that interventions can be as specific as possible. The learning from incidents process models the plan-act-check-do approach of management systems, often consisting of four major stages, namely; data collection and incident analysis, planning interventions, implementing interventions and follow-ups and evaluation [3,2]. The investigating and analysis of incidents have been regarded as one of the vital stages of the learning process since it is the stage where lessons are identified [3,2,4]. It has also been noted elsewhere in the literature that results of the previous stage of the learning process are important for the next stage [3]. For example, ineffective incident analyses could result in the planning of ineffective remedial measures. One of the primary aims of incident investigations is to identify lessons from previous incidents which when implemented can prevent future recurrences or minimise the effects of future incidents. There is thus the need for organisations to assess the quality of their investigations periodically since it is one of the means they adopt to improve safety and the quality of remedial measures to some extent depends on the effectiveness of the investigations. Although previous studies [5,2] have assessed the effectiveness of the learning process, and some aspects of the learning process, such as incidents reporting, there is less focus on the effectiveness of incident investigations. The research described in this paper was therefore conducted to contribute to this gap, focusing more closely on incident investigation reports.

During the last few years high-tonnage plants have been designed with comminution circuits using semiautogenous grinding (SAG) mills, high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR), or both, followed by ball mills in different configurations. A strong interest in improved energy efficiency and reduction of carbon footprint, along with the recent launch of new high-capacity crushers and stirred grinding mills, has driven the industry to investigate the development of novel flowsheets. This paper presents work based on recent projects that include modeling and simulation of two innovative circuits recently considered for current projects. One circuit uses autogenous (AG) mills and parallel trains of crusher-HPGR and the other is a modified three-stage crushing circuit with the use of HPGRs and pebble mills. The paper indicates the potential savings in operating costs provided by the HPGR-pebble mill circuit when compared to a more conventional SAG-mill-based circuit.

This study level process design represents an economically viable method for extracting thorium dioxide and other rare earth elements from monazite ore. This paper incorporates results from the 2019 capstone project from the honors Design Internship in Green Engineering in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering. In this activity, senior students in Chemical Engineering at the University of Tennessee (UT) focused on the development and study of a process for the recovery of thorium dioxide and P2O5 from monazite. While not mandated, the process offers rare earth oxides as attractive byproducts. The project focused on recovery of byproducts rather than the creation or addition to waste streams. Additionally, (1) the process economics relied heavily on recovery of rare earth byproducts, (2) thoriumhandling portions of the process could be effectively segregated from rare earth and phosphate handling portions of the process, and (3) thorium and uranium content of waste streams should be carefully managed and eliminated where possible.

Pumpable J-Crib stopping walls and Jennmar high-strength (HS) stopping panel walls are widely used for resisting high-ventilation air pressures and roof support in underground mines due to their installation efficiency, convergence allowance, and better performance than traditional concrete block stopping walls. Based on the different entry dimensions and required maximum ventilation air pressures of up to 36-in. water gauge, 24-, 27-, 30-, and 36-in.-diameter pumpable J-Crib stopping walls, or 18- to 30-in. thick Jennmar HS stopping panel walls can be designed, and their support capacities and convergence allowances are evaluated for better roof control. Pumpable J-Crib stopping walls consist of 0.187-in.-diameter steel wire reinforced, JCrib material-filled bags, and non-wire-reinforced filler bags in between. Jennmar HS stopping panel walls consist of two, 20-gauge (0.04-in.-thick), galvanized, cold-formed steel panels with J-Seal materials pumped in between. Based on the fundamental structural design principles and specifications of ACI 318-19(22), the compression and flexural strength, and shear resistance of the walls can be checked to be compliant with the codes and specifications following the load and resistance factor design (LRFD) method. Specifically, the 0.187- in.-diameter steel wires in the pumpable J-Crib walls and 20-gauge steel panels in the HS stopping walls are integral parts of the walls and are considered to effectively confine the J-Crib or J-Seal materials. These steel elements play a significant role in reinforcing and improving the strength or support capacity of the stopping walls from a structural design perspective. Because of the high ductility of low-density J-Crib/J-Seal materials and steel elements, these walls are good at accommodating or absorbing the roof convergence (≥5% entry height), which cannot be matched by a traditional concrete block stopping wall (Figure 1). Based on the successful design and application of these stopping walls in different mines for improving roof stability and avoiding the air leakage, the authors have formulated the design methodology and verified independently by the finite element analysis (FEA) simulation technique. This design methodology combines the fundamental structural design principles with specific wall dimensions and material properties, facilitating mine engineers and government agencies to understand the in-depth working mechanism of these stopping walls.

This paper discusses the effect of grinding media composition, mineral type and slurry environment on the wear rate of various grinding media (balls). Sufficient wear data have been obtained and correlated with the modes of wear determined from examination of the ball surfaces using scanning electron microscopy. Five modes of wear have been identified to be operative under certain slurry conditions for the various ball compositions studied.

Basic design features, details of the face ventilation system, roof support and Operator protection system, certified lighting, and in-mine evaluation plans are presented for an Automated Extraction System (AES) that has been designed to fill needs which are present in the Mining Industry. The philosophy of design and proposed operation of the machine, as well as the relationships between these factors, are reviewed. The AES is designed to help overcome production problems resulting from the regulation of roof control, clean-up, ventilation, dust suppression, and operator protection required by the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969. The design permits more continuous operation and greatly improves operator safety. The machine is a full-face drum-type continuous miner which includes self-advancing, continuous temporary roof support and permanent roof support equipment. Onboard self-advancing face ventilation, dust suppression, and air scrubbing equipment are also included in the design. A further improvement over existing equipment is the incorporation of an automatic programmed cutting cycle control system. All mining functions including movements of the roof support system are handled by this automatic system.
