Attapulgite is a magnesium aluminosilicate clay mineral which exhibits unique, processing-enhanceable physical and chemical properties that are related to its current commercial uses. Properties of commercial interest are gelling, absorption, adsorption, binding, acid neutralization and many others. Major industrial applications are: (1) absorption by heat treated grades utilized in industrial oil and grease absorbents and in agricultural pesticide carriers; (2) gelling of aqueous liquid products by colloidal grades for stabilization and viscosity control in salt water drilling fluids, suspension fertilizers, liquid animal feed supplements, paints and tape joint compounds; (3) adsorption by heat treated varieties for the removal of catalysts, color bodies and other polar compounds from hydrocarbon streams; (4) gelling of organic liquids by colloidal attapulgite/surfactant blends in oil-type paints, fibrated and nonfibrated asphaltic coatings and mastic compositions, and (5) the binding of feeds and molecular sieve sorpents with colloidal type attapulgite products. These applications and other less common uses and potential uses will be discussed along with, the necessary selective mining and plant processing features related to each property and application.

Design and construction of temporary shafts for underground facilities often require evaluation of bottom stability due to rupture (blow-ins) caused by water pressure acting on a bottom plug. This paper provides an overview of shaft bottom stability evaluation methods for the case of a relatively watertight soil plug which overlies an artesian aquifer. Methods of considering plug perimeter shear, plug buckling and pressure relief are discussed. Minimum factors of safety are suggested. Future use of the shaft subgrade is also considered. Bottom plug failure case histories at several shafts are evaluated. This paper should be useful to project designers, ground support system design engineers and contractors involved with construction of shafts for underground facilities

Heavy media cyclones (HMCs) are efficient, high-tonnage devices suitable for upgrading run-of-mine coal in the 50 to 0.5 mm size range. Unfortunately, industrial HMC circuits are often not optimized due to problems such as incorrect operating pressures, poor feed distribution, excessive media contamination, mismatched components, and improper density control. To avoid these problems, operating guidelines have been provided in this article that are useful for optimizing the performance of HMC circuits. The validity of these guidelines has been assessed by means of density tracer tests carried out at several coal preparation plants.

Hong Kong’s Strategic Sewage Disposal Scheme (SSDS) Stage I involves the provision of a system of deep tunnels for transporting to a central treatment works wastewater collected from a number of catchments around Victoria Harbour. For the SSDS Stage I works, about 24 km of tunnels have been excavated in hard rock at depths ranging from about 80 to 150 m below Victoria Harbour and the surrounding heavily developed areas of Kowloon and Hong Kong. Five tunnel boring machines(TBMs) with diameters ranging from 3.2 m to 4.3 m were used to excavate the tunnels. Tunnel excavation has been completed and tunnel linings are in progress. Major tunnelling issues such as ground stabilisation and water control encountered in the project are summarised. An overview of one of the possible future tunnel systems that might be adopted in subsequent stages of SSDS is also presented.

Lignin, the second most abundant natural polymer and bi-product of the pulp and paper industry, has been commercially available in a number of forms since 1940. This growing industry is fueled by demand in traditional applications. Reagents that offer unique solutions in various mineral process applications are examples of advanced uses that also fuel growth. These applications include flotation reagents in fluorspar, bastnäsite and potash, as well as in the zinc pressure leach process. Due to the fact that no concerted effort has been made to find applications for modified lignosulfonates, it is quite possible that this natural material will find use in other benefication processes.

U.S. feldspar output sold or used in 2005 was an estimated 760 kt (838,000 st), valued at $44 million free-on-board plant. This was below the 2004 volume and was the second year of decline in a row. Output included flotation concentrates, feldspar content in feldspar-silica mixtures, potash feldspar and aplite. The strong housing market in the United States maintained demand for ceramic tiles, plumbing fixtures and fiberglass insulation requiring feldspar. Shipments of glass containers were about the same as in 2004. Imports of ceramic tiles and plumbing fixtures continued to increase, taking the place of U.S.-produced goods and the feldspar required to make them. For 2005, 80 percent of the ceramic tiles sold and 50 percent of the plumbing fixtures sold in the United States were imported. Since 2000, manufacturing plant closures in the plumbing fixtures industry have reduced the demand for feldspar and feldspar-silica mixtures by 100 kt (110,000 st). Increased demand from the ceramic tile industry has partially offset the lost volume.

Viscosities of industrial lead slags with various compositions were measured as a function of temperature using a Brookfield viscometer. Based on the experimental data from this study and other investigations reported in the literature, an expression has been developed to correlate the viscosities of lead silicate slags as functions of composition and temperature. The effect of each individual slag component on the variation of the slag viscosity is identified. The composition dependency of viscosity of lead silicate slags is discussed. The calculated results using this viscosity expression are in good agreement with the measured data.

Overexcavation and ground loss events during pressurized-face TBMadvance in soft ground can result in unplanned deformations above the tunnel and damage to existing infrastructure. Successfully managing the risk of this occurring is crucial for any project in an urban area to proceed. Common risk management approaches include a combination of establishing suitable ranges of TBM operational parameters and using geotechnical instrumentation for deformation monitoring. Another risk management tool is material flow reconciliation, which varies depending on the specified mining method and the equipment choices by the contractor. This paper compares recent and ongoing projects in the Pacific Northwest regarding overexcavation risk management.

INTRODUCTION The city of Alexandria, Egypt is located on the Mediterranean Sea at the northwestern edge of the Nile River delta. The city is approximately 26 km long and 3 km wide bounded by the sea to the north and Lake Maryut to the south. The Alexandria Project is split into 2 phases: phase one included designs to update two existing primary wastewater treatment plants, five pump stations and over 75 km of sewer pipe, 18 km o f which is tunneled, (1500mm to 2750mm ID pipe). Currently the pipeline and pump stations are under construction. Phase two of the project includes expanding both the capacity of the treatment plants and the limits of the collection system. Included in this system expansion is the 3.5 km long, 2250mm ID Central Zone Conveyance, which is the subject of this paper. The project is under the direction of The Alexandria General Organization for Sanitary Drainage (AGOSD). It is an USAID funded joint venture of two American firms, CH2M - Hill and Metcalf & Eddy who share equally the major portion of the work and two Egyptian firms, Engineering Consultants Group (ECG) and Wairth Associates who are also partners. The venture, which is both design and construction management, worked under the name Wastewater Consultants Group, WWCG. Michael Gilbert was Chief o f the Geotechnical Department and Project Engineer for the Central Zone Conveyance. Gennaro Avolio was Geotechnical Exploration Manager for the Alexandria Wastewater Project.

Rock surrounding mine openings frequently is an impermeable type such as shale or granite. Most rock, however, has joints, bedding planes, cleavage planes, or other potential discontinuities. Permeability to fluids (gas or liquid) may exist via natural joints or fractures in an otherwise impermeable rock. In the mining situation, tectonic and induced tensile and shear stresses may be great enough to cause joints to open or fractures to develop in previously solid rock. The rock, as a result, becomes less self-supporting and may - require artificial support such as rock bolts or timber. Simultaneously, as fractures develop, permeable paths may be created. If fluid can be injected into a previously solid and impermeable rock mass, a logical conclusion is that a fracture (crack) flow path must be transmitting that fluid. The U.S. Bureau of Mines Laramie (Wyo) Energy Research Center has been evaluating results of in-situ oil shale fracturing (hydraulic or explosive) and retorting experiments by. a fluid (air) injection , and borehole air flow profile logging technique since 1956 (1, 14, 15). In the oil shale case, it is imperative to know the location and flow capacity (permeability) of natural fractures, if they exist, and induced fractures that inter-connect vertical wellbores at depths of fifty to several hundred feet. By injecting air into one wellbore in a system of several wells and measuring input volume and pressure while simultaneously measuring the output of other wellbores, the minimum areal extent of interconnecting permeable fractures can be determined. Exact locations (depths) of fractures and individual fracture flow capacities between wellbores can be determined by air flow profile logging (14, 15). Knowledge of fracture locations and permeability is essential to rational experimental in-situ retorting design.

M.S. Azun I do not at all agree with the basic points of the author's conclusion. The use of lognormal or normal model to respond to the attribute distribution function should be carefully questioned. If fitting a distribution function of regionalized variables is the main purpose, one may employ one of certain well-known families of distributions, such as Tukey's lambda functions. For instance, the distribution function of gold assay values studied by Krige (Krige, 1978) may fit the lognormal model well, but one should not exclude that the basic idea of using the distribution function of observed data is to have insight of the physical mechanism that gives rise to the regionalized variables. In Applied Geostatistics, there are many examples considering only lognormal or normal model for the distribution function of geostatistical data even if the observed distribution function has more than one mode. Of course, using lognormal or normal model always brings easy computation for the statistical properties of attribute under investigation. Still, I object to adopting any of those models without having any "statistical inference." As seen from the author's paper, lognormal and normal model produce the same average grade (0.746% copper) and almost the same sample variance. Therefore, which model explains the probabilistic behavior of ore deposit is always an important question that should be replied by the geostatistician using not the common sense but the statistical and probabilistic methods. For kriging procedures, such as linear kriging, one should describe either second order stationary properties or bivariate properties of regionalized variables. Second order properties, such as correlogram function or semivariogram function, are the inputs of the so-called kriging equations. Selecting one of any useable models for the observed second order properties, such as spherical model, is not easy since the models are not based on the correlations structure of the regionalized variables. How those models being used in Applied Geostatistics can be distinguished is another important problem. One may develop many fitting models to respond to the observed second order properties of regionalized variables. However, I suggest that the model should be based on the probabilistic behavior of geologic process. The author used spherical model for copper, wolfram, and silver grades from isotropic sector (Fig. 2, 4, 3b) and exponential model for silver grades obtained along raises in isotropic sector (Fig. 3a). It seems that those semivariograms given in Fig. 3b for isotropic sector and Fig. 4 may be described by the random model implying that regionalized variables do belong to renewal process (Azun, 1983). If I knew the total number of data points used in estimation, I may prove that my conclusion is correct. Recalling the test for the first order sample correlogram value, the test procedure is introduced such that the independence is rejected if [ ] where Za/2 is the a/2 percentile of standard normal random variable and N is the total number of samples used in estimation (Azun, 1983). For the other observed semivariogram functions I suggest the author might try to use the so-called "Markovian model" describing not only the correlation structure of regionalized variables, but also the physical mechanism that produces the regionalized variables. The Markovian model for correlogram function is, [ ] The Markovian model for the other second order properties of ReV are also derived. T ve B, in the above equation, show, for example, structural change and mineralizational variation in a considered deposit, respectively (Azun, 1983). In selecting any model, it is not easy to search for the "best" response to the observed second order properties of ReV's. The Markovian model, based on a theoretical understanding of underlying mechanism, gives more information about the occurrence of regionalized variables and respond to all properties. Random model and the so-called hole effect structure can be easily defined as a special form of the Markovian model (Azun, 1983). An estimation of any second order properties of regionalized variables may be computed through (N-1) lag. However, the dependency between the regionalized variables may be deemed to have "died out" after the so-called stationarity width (range). In practice, the estimation is carried out through 25% of the total number samples available. Therefore, the large fluctuations around the zero level and variance for correlogram or covariogram function and semi-variogram function, respectively, cannot be observed. Since the number of pairs involved in the estimation of higher second order properties is small, the estimation variance at those lags is large. There is no need to show higher order estimated second order properties. Full-face tunnelling machines were introduced into German coal mines 12 years ago. It was aimed to utilize these highly efficient systems to drive mine tunnels in rock so that the large demand for development work in some mines could be met. A characteristic feature of coal deposits in Germany - and particularly in the Ruhr Area - is a thick overburden strata. Access is therefore only possible through vertical shafts. A network of horizontal drivages leading from these shafts open the deposits between the different mine levels. The hardcoal-bearing formations are multi-folded and heavily tectonically stressed. Apart from a few extensive fault zones there are many single faults of different natures in the carboniferous strata. During the course of decades coal mining has penetrated to ever increasing depths. Nowadays coal is mined from depths of between 600 m and 1,200 m. The effects of ground pressure in connection with extremely varying rock strengths and high temperatures are particular difficulties which have to be overcome during drivage work. The first full-face tunnelling machines to be applied in the mines had originally bee deigned and developed for tunnelling projects. Not only the machines themselves, but also the back-up equipment had to be adapted to meet the special demands of German coal mines.

An entirely new level of magnetic filtration technology was put into full commercial production by the kaolin industry of Georgia, U.S.A. during 1973-1974. At present, four kaolin producers in Georgia are operating large magnetic filters each capable of processing over 1000 gallons of kaolin slurry per minute or over 65 tons of kaolin per hour on a dry basis. A fifth large filter will go on stream in August, 1975. Four of these units are 84" machines manufactured by the Pacific Electric Motor Company of Oakland, California. When operated at the maximum 1000 g, p. m. rate, these five large magnetic filters have a combined capacity approximating the entire waterwashed coating and filler kaolin produced in the U.S.

A program of geological research in support of mineral exploration efforts is outlined. Specific goals are stated, approaches to accomplish their attainment are described, and the type of useful results to be expected are outlined. Because mineral exploration or prospecting has intensely practical goals, research in support of it must be applied research, applied to the problem of maintaining or increasing the discovery rate of the exploration effort. To attain research goals, attention to personnel selection, group structure, and program are critically important, and in about that order. A large percentage of the professional personnel should have had experience in mining geology or mineral exploration, and they all should be prospector-oriented. Structuring in the group should be at a minimum, with wide allowance for the kind of independent research which is essential to the nurturing of on-target creativity. The program should be field-oriented, and it should include a wide representation of those subdisciplines of geology which are applicable to mineral exploration. The types of results to be anticipated include improved or new conceptual models for various types of orebodies and their settings from which new ore guides can be derived, new exploration techniques, and the development of a knowledge bank for various aspects of the exploration effort.

As the total cost of labor has significantly increased over the past ten years, older underground mines have found it more difficult to compete- in a limited demand coal market. Many of the older mines were developed extensively into a reserve requiring a large number of workers to maintain and rehabilitate extensive track haulages and/or belt conveyor systems. Often, a large number of fans were required to maintain minimal airflows in areas where poor conditions and huge leakages prevail. This paper focuses upon problems which beset one such coal mine and projects undertaken to restore it to potential profitability.

The Peñasquito deposit in Mexico is one of the largest grassroots precious metal discoveries developed in recent years. Goldcorp Inc. acquired the gold-silver-lead-zinc property with the acquisition of Glamis in 2006. The Peñasquito property is located in the northeast corner of Zacatecas state, Mexico. The elevation of the property averages 1,900 m (6,200 ft) above sea level. It is situated in a wide east-west valley. Minera Peñasquito, S.A. de C.V., wholly owned subsidiary of Goldcorp Inc. has operated twin SABC-flotation lines since June 2010. Each line is capable of processing 50,000 tonne per day using a SABC grinding circuit followed by flotation to produce lead and zinc concentrates. The addition of a Polysius Polycom HPGR 2417 with dual 3,000 kW drives to reduce the crushed pebbles produced by the SAG mills was planned to increase production to 65,000 tonne per day per line. The production has been limited to 100,000 tpd due to operating issues in the grinding circuit. The operating issue has been the amount of pebbles generated by the SAG mills is significantly less than originally planned. This paper describes the planned installation of a crushed augmented feed to maximize utilization of the HPGR capacity. This coupled with full utilization of the SAG and Ball Mill available energies there is the potential to achieve a 50% total capacity increase from the grinding circuit.

Classical acid-base accounting using modified Sobek titration methods has resulted in interpretation of results for materials with neutralization potential (NP) less than 20 tons of CaCO3/1000 tons of material (2% CaCO3) as "uncertain" due to lack of sensitivity within that content range. Standardization of a "fizzless" acid neutralization potential (ANP) method was undertaken in the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) International using two ranges of sulfuric acid additions based on reaction pH and carbonate carbon estimates rather than subjective fizz testing as well as hydrogen peroxide additions to correct for mineral acidity. The method is identified as the acid neutralization potential acidity (ANPA) titration method. During interlaboratory testing a positive bias was discovered within the "uncertain" range which was further investigated and resolved by increasing the test sample weight from one to five grams for samples needing improved accuracy in materials with ANP <2% CaCO3. Test results from the interlaboratory testing of the low range method is presented and compared with the results from the original ANPA method in the paper.

Hilltop Interceptor Contract G is one of the segments of the wastewater control system in the greater Cleveland area. The tunnel is a relief interceptor constructed by the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District to minimize combined sewer overflows in the Easterly Service Area. The design study identified the need for a 3.35 m (132 in) diameter, 3.35 km (11,000 ft)in-line storage conveyance tunnel to be constructed at depths of 30 to 70 m (100 to 230 ft).Six structures for access, future flow drop, work shafts and overflow control were required to complete the system. The interceptor reduced the design peak flow from 12.5 m3/s(285 mgd) to 6.1 m3/s (140 mgd) by detaining in line 22,800 m3 (six million gallons) of wastewater.

The large walking dragline has been the most commonly used overburden-stripping equipment in Texas lignite mines. These draglines, operating on the highwall side of the pit, can excavate to a depth of 45 m. Considerable overburden rehandling is required beyond 30 m and may reach 100 percent by 45m. As pit depth increases, dragline operation also becomes more complex, with two or three passes being necessary to make a cut 30 to 40 m wide. Multiseam operations also require extra passes. At pit depths greater than 45 m, the dragline must be operated also from a spoil bench. This can be difficult in the unstable alluvial deposits in which lignite occurs.
