The distribution of phosphate in Pliocene-Miocene deposits of the Southeastern United States was controlled by the prevailing geologic setting. For each basin a unique set of conditions in terms of relationship of land mass to shelf, depositional environment and seawater composition, and movement controlled phosphate distribution. Concentration sufficient to recognize the deposits as a resource occurred in lagoons or shallow neritic zones, with clastics and carbonates diluting the section basinward. Each deposit within a basin displays similar metallurgy and lithology, notwithstanding post-depositional alteration.

Conditioning of flotation feed is an important prerequisite for efficient flotation. This process depends on parameters such as conditioning time, slurry concentration and slurry pH. The objective of this paper is to optimize the conditioning process for the flotation feed. This was achieved by first conducting preliminary experiments at constant slurry pH to determine the significant ranges of slurry concentration and conditioning time. Then, factorial experimental design (32 experiments) was used to investigate the significance of the above parameters and their interactions on flotation recovery and grade. Statistical analyses using ANOVA approach showed that flotation recovery (R) and concentrate grade (g) were affected by feed conditioning. It was found that concentrate grade was linearly proportional to the slurry concentration and conditioning time, while flotation recovery was exponentially proportional to the conditioning parameters. A contour plot of the flotation response (recovery and grade) against conditioning parameters showed that the optimum operating parameters for flotation feed conditioning was a conditioning time of 1.5 to 2 minutes and a slurry conentration of 55% to 60%.

The Jamestown Mine is a 6.3-kt/d (7000-stpd) open-pit gold mining operation located in the central portion of California's historic Mother Lode district. Most early production from the Jamestown area occurred in underground operations from 1906 through 1916. Pit production began at Jamestown in early 1987 and continued until July 1994. Although additional mineral resources existed, they were deemed to be uneconomic. About 23.3 t (750,000 oz) of gold were produced from pit operations, compared to 31 t (100,000 oz) from early underground mining. Recent operations at Jamestown included two open pits, a flotation mill and a flotation tailings facility. Flotation concentrates were produced in Jamestown and shipped to Yerington, NV for cyanide leaching in a carbon-in-pulp (CIP) circuit.

The Pb-Zn ore bodies in the Pine Point district are localized in paleo-solution structures that developed as the result of post-middle Givetian subaerial exposure of the carbonate barrier complex. Sulfides are concentrated in transgressive pale-solution structures that acted as natural bypasses between aquifers and loci for mixing of fluids of different character, one of which contained metals and the other reduced sulfur. Complex ore textures indicate rapid early sulfide precipitation followed by slower sulfide growth. Evidence for both sulfide-carbonate equilibrium and disequilibrium conditions suggest fluctuations in ore fluid composition. District and ore body metal distribution patterns may reflect the nature and movement of mineralizing fluids.

Introduction The intent of this paper is to present the general strategy and method of implementation to achieve a "fast-track" mine development. The major objectives of a "fast-track" or rapid development schedule are to minimize front-end development expenditures and to realize an early cash flow from operations. The Borealis project of Houston International Minerals Corp. (HIMCO) is used as the working example to illustrate the development schedule. Borealis is a 2.3 kt/d (2,500 stpd) gold-silver heap leach operation near Hawthorne, NV, Pre-Feasibility Planning Proper early planning and identification of priority items were necessary to expedite project progress. On April 1, 1978, HIMCO leased the rights to the Borealis prospect and initiated exploration activities almost immediately. Since Borealis was showing excellent potential for mine development, an effort to clear the way environmentally was initiated during the summer of 1979. With the Borealis properties located within the Toiyabe National Forest, the US Forest Service (USFS) was recognized as the "lead" or respon¬sible agency for addressing the environmental issues. Early scoping of the environmental issues by both HIMCO and the USFS allowed HIMCO to take the initiative and address two potentially critical issues-archaeological and biological. Third party consultants, agreed upon by HIMCO and the USFS, were contracted to conduct archaeological and biological surveys. Desert Research Institute of Reno, NV, provided archaeological services, and JFL & Associates of Boulder, CO, provided biological services. These efforts began in the fall of 1979 and continued through the summer of 1980. Conservative Design Criteria By adoption of conservation design criteria, flowsheets and processing data required for detail engineering were firmly established with a minimum of impact on schedule. On Oct. 21, 1980, HIMCO formally initiated a feasibility study to evaluate the Borealis project. Four organizations were contracted for particular scopes of work: • John T. Boyd Co.: Ore reserve estimation, preliminary mine plan, and mine capital and operating cost estimation. • Bechtel Civil and Minerals: Conceptual engineering, processing capital and operating cost estimation. • Hazen Research Inc.: Metallurgical testing. • Sierra Pacific Power: Cost estimation for power supply. Metallurgical testing and conceptual engineering of both heap and agitation leach flowsheets were investigated concurrently. Numerous economic evaluations were conducted for both heap and agitation leaching at varying production capacities. The results indicated a heap leaching flowsheet treating 454 kt/y (500,000 stpy) yielded the best economics and was compatible with the "fast-track" development goal. Conservative design criteria was established to provide operating flexibility and ensure plant productivities. A summary of major design criteria is presented in Table 1. HIMCO assembled the results of the studies of the various consultants along with internally generated studies to produce the feasibility document. The decision to supply 100% equity by HIMCO rather than arrange project financing help to expedite the project. Cooperation Between HIMCO and Regulatory Agencies With cooperation and mutual trust established between HIMCO and regulatory agencies, the time required for environmental permitting was streamlined as much as practical. To expedite the required construction permits, HIMCO proposed to the USFS that HIMCO fund the total cost of an Environmental Assessment Report (EAR) and that issues be addressed at the technical level of an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS). The previous studies on the critical issues of archaeology and biology provided HIMCO with the information to satisfy the proposed approach. Houston International Minerals and the USFS agreed to have Environmental Research and Technology (ERT) of Fort Collins, CO, prepare a draft EAR for the USFS.

The milling plant of Bicroft Uranium Mines Limited has been in operation for a period of 2 years. During this time many changes, both physical and chemical, have been made in an effort to improve plant efficiency. Investigational work has been facilitated greatly by the fact that the Bicroft mill consists to a large extent of two parallel circuits; however, the number of inter-related variables is great, and it is difficult to measure, let alone control, all of them simultaneously. The Bicroft mill staff feel that much progress has been made, but there is much yet to be done and many questions still to be answered. The property of Bicroft Uranium Mines is located in Cardiff Township in the Highlands of Haliburton County, southeastern Ontario, some 140 miles northeast of the city of Toronto and 70 miles due north of Lake Ontario. The ore-bearing dikes are classed as mafic, non-segregated, syenite and granite pegmatites. Microline, microline perthite, quartz, uraninite, uranotharite, fluorite, titanite, cyrolite, calcite, pyrite, pyrrhotite and molybdenite as important accessories. The mill was designed for a nominal capacity of 1,000 tpd with all sections except grinding, leaching and clarification capable of 1,500 tons. Feed was entered to one mill unit on October 29, 1956 and to the second parallel line on November 13. The total feed rate was at 1,000 tpd on November 15. The first precipitate was produced on November 12. By August 1958 the average entry had been increased to 1,410 tpd without the installation of any additional major equipment. The overall recovery has been greater than 93,0 pet do several months, but a recovery of 92.5 pct appears to be most economical. Operating time for 8 months in 1958 has been 97.1 pet although all grinding mills were relined during this period.

The Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act of 2006 (MINER Act) amended the Federal Mine Safety and Health Act of 1977 to improve the safety of mines. The MINER Act established a Technical Study Panel (the Panel) to provide independent scientific and engineering review and recommendations with respect to the utilization of belt air and the composition and fire retardant materials in underground coal mining (1). Because frictional heating is a common cause of belt fires, the Panel recommended that the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) evaluate the drum friction test to determine if such a test would contribute to conveyor belt safety beyond that provided by the Belt Evaluation Laboratory Test (BELT). This paper compares the results of the drum friction test to results from the BELT and large-scale tests for six different conveyor belts. The results are used to evaluate the drum friction test as a method to determine the fire resistance of conveyor belts.

Abstract. The commercial importance of hydroxyoximes as extractants for copper has given impetus to basic studies on the chemistry of metal extraction by these compounds. The discovery of accelerator compounds which produce catalytic effects on hydroxyoxime extraction rates has led to mechanistic studies of these rate processes. While these studies have highlighted the importance of interfacial chemical reactions in the extraction process, it is not yet possible to unambiguously describe the mechanisms of metal extraction in these systems or the associated catalytic effects. This paper reviews progress in understanding the mechanism of metal extraction by hydroxyoximes.

This chrysotile asbestos orebody is located near the northern tip of the Province of Quebec, Canada. It is some 1818 km (1130 mi) north of Montreal; 480 km (300 mi) north of the tree line and is situated within the zone of continuous permafrost. The open pit ore zone is approximately 0.4 km (1/4 mi) in length some 61 m (200 ft) in width and plunges at 25-30 below surface to a vertical depth of at least 610 m (2000 ft). The orebody was originally evaluated by programs of surface mapping, diamond drilling and bulk sampling. The fibre is semi-crude, possesses excellent strength, and good fibre length distribution.

Editor's note: information for this feature was taken from the published APCOM proceedings. Computer trends, with special focus on the reasons for computer use, grabbed the lion's share of attention at the 23rd worldwide meeting on the Application of Computers and Operations Research in the Mineral Industry (APCOM 23). However, technical topics did not provide the meeting's sole focus. The last-minute inability of certain former communist countries to fund the travels of a few scheduled speakers was a reminder that science does not operate in a void. As with all technical progress, the APCOM presentations raised interesting questions regarding interrelated organizational dynamics and political and socioeconomic issues. Consider US Bureau of Mines (USBM) research to design an expert control systems to "duplicate" an experienced, "good" operator during automated underground roof bolting. In his presentation of the project, Takach, Jr. stressed the importance of preserving the ability to switch from automatic to manual drilling control. From a technical standpoint, this allows the expert system to "learn" from a good operator. As important, he said, is that this flexibility decreases the human operator's sense of being replaced by the machine. The question arises: Which will loom larger in union minds, increased operator safety through remote opera¬tion or the potential for total operator replacement? Like any new product, computer technology relies on marketing to aid its acceptance and use. Consider, too, a decision support system, by Schena and Gochin, for mineral resource management in a developing country. History The Cortez Mining District has a long history of mining activity dating back to 1862. More recently, Cortez Gold Mines had operated a cyanide leach, counter current decantation (CCD) recovery gold mill from January 1969 to February 1976. This type of plant has been standard in the US for treating higher grade, finely disseminated gold in Carlin type ores. The mill was initially operated from 1969 to 1973 at 1.5 kt/d (1650 stpd) on oxidized ore from the Cortez ore body. In 1973, the mill was operated at 2 kt/d (2200 stpd) on softer, less oxidized, high clay ore from Gold Acres, located 13 km (8 miles) west of Cortez, NV. In February 1976, the oxidized portion of the ore body at Gold Acres was depleted and the mill ceased operations. Successful heap leaching of the lower grade portion of the ores was practiced at both Cortez and Gold Acres to supplement the milling operations. Valuable experience was gained in the operation of these two heap leaching programs (Duncan and Smolik, 1977). The ore heaps at Gold Acres and Cortez were releached with a limited crew from 1976 to 1979. The surge in the price of gold in late 1979 sparked an interest to incorporate new techniques into treating lower grade and less oxidized carbonaceous ores at Cortez. In early 1980, heap leaching was started on low grade oxidized dump material left from the earlier Cortez mining operation. By June of 1980, testwork was completed on the London Extension Dump, a low grade, mildly carbonaceous dump at Gold Acres. It was decided to convert the mill at Cortez from the conventional cyanide leach CCD recovery plant to a carbon-in-leach (CIL) recovery system. In May 1983, ore processing from the Horse Canyon deposit began. The Horse Canyon ore body contains both oxide and carbonaceous ores and is located 22.5 km (14 miles) from the Cortez mill. The Cortez CIL circuit was expanded to handle a blend of oxide and carbonaceous ores from Horse Canyon. Ore selection In the last quarter 1979, gold prices were increasing to a point where restarting the Cortez mill, idled since 1976, appeared imminent. Several previously explored geologic reserves at various stages of development were available as possible sources of feed for the mill. Initial metallurgical testing of dumps and tailings from earlier operations was completed, and previously uneconomic deposits were explored. It was decided to pursue sources of ore with the least lead time to production and those with the least capital cost requirements. A master plan was developed to bring the four profitable ore resources into production. Introduction Mineral exploration interest, principally for gold, in the south-western Pacific has surged to new proportions. This is primarily due to the application of epithermal exploration concepts in the Australian-Oceana region. Other factors that have contributed to the high level of exploration interest include governmental policies supportive of mineral exploration, along with relative ease of tenure access and a relatively short bureaucratic process. This paper highlights exploration and development activities in the North Island of New Zealand, Fiji, Vanuatu, the Solomon Islands, and Papua New Guinea (Fig. 1). It provides a framework to understand the overall recent enthusiasm that has been brought to the south Pacific by explorationists. Through these recent developments, it is clear that the south Pacific region will become a significant gold producing area and thereby worthy of attention and study. Papua New Guinea alone is the free world's seventh largest producer (Table 1). And, with the addition of production from deposits presently being developed, this status is likely to be raised. History Gold was first noted on various Pacific islands in the late 1500s by Spanish explorers. They thought they had reached the legendary King Solomon mines. Since then, the history of prospecting in the southwest Pacific has coincided with the colonization of the region. Settlers in New Zealand extensively mined alluvial and lode gold deposits starting in the 1850s. The spread of European colonization to the more remote Pacific islands from 1880-1940 was accompanied by varying degrees of prospecting activity by planters, traders, and settlers. Some were successful, others may have been successful, but never returned due to hostile indigenous peoples or disease. In general, records of such prospecting activity are meager and exploration leads are, in some cases, gained through local village folk memory. Most early discoveries were alluvial finds. These led to placer operations, particularly in New Zealand, the Solomon Islands, and Papua New Guinea. Continued prospecting located lode deposits such as the Morobe Gold-field of Papua New Guinea, the Coromandel Peninsula of New Zealand, and the Emperor of Fiji. Some areas were prospected thoroughly. Yet others, such as Vanuatu, remained relatively unexplored until the present exploration surge began. During World War II, interest in minerals was diverted. It was renewed significantly until the middle 1960s and early 1970s when regional porphyry copper exploration was conducted.

Grinding circuits are operated in the presence of disturbances due to ore changes and equipment malfunctions. One of the challenges faced by the operators is the detection of a disturbance, the identification of its origin and of the action to correct the problem. Hydrocyclones overloading, worn or partly plugged apexes of the units of a nest, surging and internal liner detachment may cause a loss of classification capacity and quality leading to a less efficient grinding operation. A dynamic simulator is used to assess rules for the diagnosis of hydrocyclone faults from the trends produced by sensors.

Historically, boulders are a frequent source of problems in soft ground tunneling. During tunnel construction, the need to manually break and remove boulders as obstructions causes delays to the project. Repairs to a tunnel boring machine (TBM) can also be a source of delays. Managing these problems is difficult since normal soil investigation techniques do not accurately predict the presence or frequency of boulders. This has lead to considerable number of claims for extra costs and delays during the construction of soft ground tunneling projects. These issues are exacerbated in pressurized face tunneling systems where there is limited access to the TBM cutterhead for obstruction removal and/or cutterhead maintenance. The project team that built the Big Walnut Augmentation/Rickenbacker Interceptor (BWARI) Project for the City of Columbus successfully managed the design and construction of a 4,267 mm (14 ft) diameter soft ground tunnel with high boulder concentrations in a complex geologic setting. The management of the boulder issue tookplace during several phases of the project.

"The paper discusses the results of 3D finite element analyses to investigate the effect of face support pressure and soil permeability on face stability conditions in EPB tunnelling. Two main types of face behavior are identified: Undrained conditions ahead of the tunnel face, typically occurring in soils with permeability less than about k=5·10-7m/s, are shown to be favourable for face stability; analyses show that an applied face pressure comparable with the initial hydrostatic pore pressure is sufficient for adequate face stability, even for soils of relatively low strength. Drained or partially conditions, typically occurring in soils with permeability higher than about k=5·10-6m/s, show that face stability is strongly dependent on the horizontal effective stress of the muck in the excavation chamber; the presence of even a small effective stress in the muck is very beneficial for face stability conditions and can be a possible explanation of successful EPB tunnelling through relatively permeable soils. INTRODUCTION Face stability is probably the most important aspect in urban tunnelling. Usually, Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) machines are utilized, to ensure that a reasonable amount of face pressure is exerted on the advancing excavation face, reducing ground loss and preventing potential instability of the face core, thus controlling the amount of disturbance caused by tunnel excavation to surface structures. However, the ideal amount of face pressure depends on several factors (ground and groundwater conditions, tunnel size and depth, muck conditioning, etc.) which are difficult to include in analytical calculations. For many years, conventional empirical or analytical methods (e.g. Anagnostou & Kovari 1996) were the only available tools for quantifying face stability and selecting the required face pressure. In the last few years, however, numerical analyses have gained power over conventional methods, allowing more accurate designs and providing useful information about the anticipated ground deformations due to tunnelling. Numerical analyses have also been used in assessing safety against face instability using face extrusion (horizontal face displacement) calculations (e.g. Prountzopoulos 2012)."

That you are giving the Daniel C. Jackling award to me is a great personal honor. But more significantly, it is a recognition that geostatistics has come of age. And since I am considered by many as belonging to an older generation of geostatisticians, I thought that it would be fitting that I reflect on where geostatistics came from and where it might be going. First, though, let me propose a definition of geostatistics. Etymologically, paraphrasing Webster's definitions of "geo" and "statistics," it is "a branch of mathematics dealing with the collection, analysis, interpretation and presentation of masses of numerical data taken from the earth." This definition is most appropriate in the context of mining geostatistics. It includes both classical and spatial statistics. It emphasizes the earth aspect, or the analysis of geologic features. And it should remind the practitioner that geologic input is a critical part of all geostatistical applications. In the 1910s, statistical methods were already used to analyze geological data. However, the origin of geostatistics, as we know it today, is best set in the late 1940s, when H.S. Sichel recognized the lognormal distribution of sample values in the South African gold mines. In 1951, Daniel Krige observed that "it can be expected that the gold values in a whole mine will be subject to a larger relative variation than those in a portion of the mine." In other words, samples taken close to each other are more likely to have similar values than if taken farther apart. This observation is the foundation on which spatial statistics, which characterizes values defined in a multidimensional space, is built. However, the 1950s were marked by studies based on classical, as opposed to spatial, statistics. It was only in the 1960s that the need was recognized to model the similarity between sample values as a function of the distance between samples and that the semivariogram was defined. A theoretical framework was developed by Matheron that supplied an elegant mathematical explanation to the empirical observations made by Krige. Matheron coined the term "kriging" in recognition of Krige's pioneering work on the geostatistical evaluation of mineral deposits. As soon as this theoretical framework was developed, it was possible to bring geostatistics to the academic world. The "Centre de Geostatistiques" was founded in Fontainebleau. Numerous students were trained there, disciples eager not only to improve the theory and develop more sophisticated mathematical tools, but also to spread the new faith throughout the world. National Grid needs to maintain a connection between two existing electricity sub-stations (Beddington & Rowdown) in the Croydon (south London) area, and allow the replacement of two 275 kV cable circuits that are buried under roads. This is to be achieved using a single 400 kV cable circuit within a 10 km (6.25 mile) long, 3 m (9.8 ft) diameter high voltage cable tunnel which is being driven through water bearing Chalk, at depths ranging from 5 m (15 ft) to 80 m (262 ft), with four access shafts(12.5 m (41 ft) in diameter) ranging in depth from 10 m (31 ft) to 40 m (131 ft). The Chalk in this area acts as a source of public drinking water supply (PWS) and is protected by areas designated Groundwater Source Protection Zones. To minimise the groundwater risk the design and construction of the cable tunnel and shafts has paid particular attention to the construction materials used, including testing of these construction materials prior to use, developing construction methods (including the design of the Earth Pressure Balance TBM) and maintaining a groundwater monitoring & testing programme prior to and during construction to ensure the integrity of the Chalk aquifer is maintained as a drinking water source. This paper describes the tunnel &shaft design and construction in relation to these particular groundwater environmental issues which set new precedents for tunnel assessment, design and construction requirements in the United Kingdom.

Traditionally the mineral and mining engineers have characterized particles by sieving and-settling. Within the last decade, with the advent of the scanning microscope, entirely new experimental and theoretical approachesl-10/have been taken to minutely define the particle surface. This approach depends upon a hypothesis which takes advantage of the recent developments in automatic micro-scopes which can acquire large amounts of information in a short time and the new computational techniques which rapidly reduce the information to meaningful, practical data. Historically sieving and settling are the oldest sizing techniques known. Sieving by square screens, shown on Figure l-A is a common, current practice for sizing particles both in the laboratory and in production. A woven cloth is used which usually has square openings. The size particle that will pass through the opening dependent on a complex relationship of its morphology. As can be seen in Figure l-A, neither the width nor the height of the particle is determined by sieving. From square screens one and only one parameter characterizing the particle size is obtained, that parameter is the radius of the sphere that will just pass through the given sieve opening. A variation of square mesh screen is the slot screens, shown in Figure 1-B. Here another measure more closely associated with the height of the particle is obtained. Once again, one and only one parameter is associated with the particles' shape.

The air flow problems in openpit mines are complex. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models can provide detailed information regarding air flow pattern, velocity distribution, temperature, and pollutant concentration in an enclosed domain of an openpit mine. A range of turbulent models can be selected with varying complexity and accuracy. Pollutant transport models, however, differ in their assumptions and structure as well as in the algorithms they use. As a result, predictions vary from model to model. This paper presents a study of pollutant transport in an actual openpit mine under a stable boundary layer. The objective was to test two turbulence models using similar geometry and the same input conditions and model constants. Measured data were used to compare the results of the two CFD models, namely, the kappa-epsilon (к-є) model and the Large Eddy Simulation model. Despite the complex synoptic situations, different meteorological input data and fast-changing conditions, the simulation results from both the models were in good agreement regarding the dispersion of pollutants.

Commonly used predictors of ground vibration from blasting, being linear in log-log plot, do not model the underlying physics of wave attenuation. Amplitude of the wave decays with distance due to geometrical spreading and inelastic attenuation producing a nonlinear carve in log-log scale. The nolinear decay of seismic waves has also been observed from non-explosive sources, such as, pile driving, drop hammer, traffic, etc. The improved predictors, by explicitly taking these two mechanisms into consideration, model the data trend extremely well at all distance ranges. Actual field data from different studies have been used to validate the improved models.
