This paper details the preliminary design work carried out before and during the implementation of an extensive backfilling programme on Cooke 3 Shaft, Randfontein Estates Gold Mining Company (Witwatersrand) Limited. The design work is of relevance to any system utilizing a cementitious binder, and the quality control aspects are of particular significance. Problems associated with correlating laboratory results to actual field results are also briefly discussed.

Mining professionals recognize the need to continuously evaluate and refine mine planning standards and scheduling. We must examine our current reality, and evaluate the following: •How well do our planning standards represent the actual mining process? •To what extent do they support the requirements of the downstream mining activities? •How we apply them to operational management and control? In most operations, mine-planning standards are global averages. Little differentiation is madein quantifying key planning variables. Often standards used in the long-term, are applied to the short-term, and the standards and scheduling precedents are only reviewed occasionally. Mine-planning standards applied to production schedules are often only focused on the management of functional mining performance, and play no role in managing the requirements of down stream processing. Many mining operations are characterized by high levels of fluctuation, and typically incorporate a wide range of factors and adjustments to compensate for deviations from performance targets, in mining operations as well as for the other business areas. The reason for using global averages is because of a lack of understanding of the causes of deviations that occur through the process, and the impact that they may have on the performance of the business as a whole. Average standards and factors are often used to quantify the variability in a system. From these average values, measurement standards and performance targets are derived for the planning and execution environments. During the execution of a plan/schedule there will be deviation in actual performance and the planned ‘average’ standards. In reality the ‘average’ conditions seldom occur and the impact of variability and interdependency are seldom constant or predictable. The predictability of variability and interdependency is further complicated by the fact that mining conditions have a role to play in the actual production performance, and they too are variable. By developing the throughput knowledge of our production systems, we can better understand the nature of variability and the interdependency within the systems as well as the impact of interdependency between the links in our production chains. With this knowledge, planning standards and scheduling precedents can be better defined and sensibly differentiated. This will improve planning and management of ore utilization, mining production and the effectiveness of processing. As a result the business will be more stable and predictable and business performance will be improved. The purpose of this paper is to describe: •At a high level, the scope for refining and differentiation in mine planning standards, and incorporating geological and plant parameters into mine scheduling. This will improve planning and scheduling and the overall performance of the mine. Given our current level of scientific knowledge and the technological tools at our disposal we should be able to plan and schedule production so that we can manage pro-actively and improve business performance. In doing so we can also improve reconciliation and value tracking through mining and processing •The flexibility and functionality of the XPAC planning and scheduling tool that will enable a throughput management approach.

Deposition of gold-bearing deposits in the Witwatersrand Basin was controlled by hydraulic processes. These resulted in the formation of independent sedimentological facies areas having different statistics and semivariograms. Consequently, when there are indications that data are a mixture of statistical populations, it is important to decompose them into statistical subpopulations and analyse these independently. However, in the case of actual mining, physical position and extent of sub- populations are important and, as a consequence, any decomposition of data must take space into account if it is to be of use. An algorithm for the spatial decomposition of data into its sub-populations is described and is applied to real data taken from the Witwatersrand. Two distinct areas with completely different geostatistical parameters were revealed.

An important aspect of the project evaluation process is the achievement of a clear and quantitative understanding of the primary drivers influencing project value and risk. A business scenario-based approach is required to ensure that the project meets value and risk hurdles over the short, medium and longer term. Adopting an optimising approach can aid significantly in the development of a project concept into a business that is optimal and sustainable in the longer term. Through the application of case studies, based on work performed with various mining organisations during the last five years, this paper will demonstrate how project value and robustness can be optimised. Experience has demonstrated that applying this approach results in significant value improvements and risk reduction - primarily by application of a rigorous, fact-based analysis and optimisation process that rapidly increases management team understanding and insight of key driver of value and risk.

This paper deals with the reticulation of deslimed tailings from surface to the stope face underground. Reference is made to the experience gained at the pilot plants operating on four of the gold mines administered by Gold Fields of South Africa, as well as at the full-scale system at East Driefontein which was commissioned recently. Mine-wide backfill systems are currently being installed on five other mines administered by Gold Fields. These six full-scale systems are capable of handling more than 270 000 tons of backfill solids per month. The type of reticulation system chosen, the selection of flowrates and the composition of the slurry, as well as the selection of the appropriate pipes and ancillary equipment are discussed. Both theoretical and practical aspects are taken into consideration. Other aspects covered include the design of underground storage dams and communication systems.

Any study of the contentious subject of nationalization can ultimately be reduced to a sombre analysis of the simultaneous, and very different, interests of capital, labour, and government. Each of these interests attempts to maximize its objectives, subject to checks and balances provided, in an ideal system, by a country's executive government, legislature, and judiciary. Where even one of the three interests goes out of control, the consequences can be disastrous. The case histories show that when this occurs, the most common culprit is government, or its proxy, such as a dictator. At the other extreme, the case studies indicate that the optimum outcome occurs when capital, labour, and government are 'ring fenced' from each other: each enjoys its rights, but is also subject to duties. 'Conflicts of interest' between the three entities are ideally avoided to the maximum possible extent. The case studies include several salient instances from both the DRC (Gécamines, La Générale des Carrières et des Mines) and Zambia, along with Ghana and Chile. Further instances are examined in South Africa (gold), India (Coal of India), Brazil (Petrobras), Venezuela (Petróleos de Venezuela), Sweden (Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara Aktiebolag), Mauritania (Société Nationale Industrielle et Minière), Norway (Norsk Hydro), Botswana (Debswana), and Namibia (Namdeb). The article concludes broadly that South Africa's minerals sector is not ready for nationalization.

In this paper we present The Ultimate Flotation Cell, a newly developed flotation cell that is proving very popular in the industry. All flotation cells have only one purpose and that is the recovery of the required product, the patented impeller and disperser system of the Ultimate Flotation Cell allows total flexibility in order to achieve the optimal recovery. This ability to tune the cell performance provides the optimization of the ?capture? (collection) stage, all existing models address the need for a wide bubble size distribution (100µm-2 mm) to obtain a better flotation size-by-size, Yoon, 1999,Yoon 2000, Franzidis and Manlapig, 1999. The Ultimate Flotation Cell provides flexible performance optimization. This ability to optimize the flotation regime particular to a specific ore is achieved by the following factors: ? The impeller allows vastly improved air induction rates compared to conventional and sparged cells. This ability to induce and disperse large quantities of air, in a controlled manner, allows the cells to be tuned to give the optimal Sb by varying the rotational speed via a VSD which every cell is fitted with. ? The patented impeller gives a very constant and stable air induction rate, which ensures that the cell?s circulation pattern is constant, giving a very stable surface, allowing optimal froth depth. ? Although conventional dart valve, level control can be offered, great success has been achieved with a simple draft tube/sand relief device. ? The cells have a inlet design similar to the old Denver ?Cell-to-Cell? design, which guarantees the at lease one pass through the mixing zone in each cell. Actual plant performance data will be presented from two plants, one in Zambia and the other in the DRC.

In some mining situations, backfills are not only required to be free-standing but are also expected to provide hangingwall support. It may therefore be specified that the backfill withstand a certain calculated stress within a given time. Given the materials available, the choice of backfill composition is not always straightforward, and an approach to the evaluation of cemented tailings backfill is therefore proposed. The general use of such a method will greatly assist in both the scientific analysis of the material properties for industry-wide purposes of comparison and decision-making as regards the choice of fill.

"The sizing, designing, and costing of copper electrowinning circuits requires an in-depth understanding of the fundamental relationships between circuit parameters and the practical operation requirements. The aim of this investigation was to optimize total copper electrowinning project cost by mapping the operating limits of key mechanical equipment. The model was compiled by mapping various cellhouse layouts in terms of number of cathodes per cell, crane productivity, stripping machine productivity, and rectifier–transformer (rectiformer) sizing using data tables for sensitivity analysis. These parameters were then collated and evaluated on a cost by size basis. The model provides an optimum band of operation for cellhouse productivity and project capital cost for a typical range of production throughputs, from 10 kt/a to 200 kt/a cathode copper. The information may be used as a high-level selection guide to assist with identifying a costeffective copper electrowinning circuit design for a specific production rate. The data was validated and compared with existing copper electrowinning cellhouses around the world that typically install no more than 84 cathodes per cell. IntroductionThe sizing, designing, and costing of copper electrowinning (EW) circuits require an indepth understanding of the fundamental parameters as well as the practical requirements to optimize cellhouse productivity and capital cost. Although a significant amount of work has been done designing new copper electrowinning circuits, an in-depth evaluation of world operating data reveals that the number of cathodes per cell, which affects cellhouse layout and productivity, is not consistent for a specific production rate (Anderson et al., 2009; Robinson et al., 2003, 2013). Based on this premise, Kafumbila (2017) suggested that there are unanswered questions, such as ‘why are the numbers of cathodes per cell different for copper production rates of 20 kt/a and 40 kt/a?’In this paper, data tables are employed to map the operating limits and costs of key Cu EW equipment. This paper reviews the sources, production, and technology of gold in South Africa. First of al it details the geographical distribution of gold-bearing materials, together with the mineralogy and distribution of gold within those materials. It goes on to the geological origins, and to the discovery and early exploitation, of the gold deposits. The laws relating to the mining and disposal of the metal are explained, after which an outline is given of gold exploration, processing, and refining. The economics of gold production are discussed briefly, and it is concluded that, although present expertise in the financial and technological aspects of a gold-mining venture have largely reduced the risks involved, one severe risk remains: that the rate of cost inflation will not be matched by the rate of escalation in the gold price.

This paper presents a quantitative approach to the problem of determining design capacity and field dimensions of underground coal mines using room- and-pillar mining systems. In evaluating these design variables, relationships among mining costs, number of production sections in mines, location of central shafts, mine field dimensions, section production, mine output, and cost of production losses due to underground man-traveling are analyzed. Thereby the unit cost of coal is expressed as a function of the design variables as well as input parameters such as seam angle, seam thickness, seam depth, underground traveling speed of men, mine recovery and plant recovery. The problem is then formulated as a nonlinear optimization model in terms of minimizing the unit cost of coal subject to a set of constraints and solved analytically for flat seams and numerically for inclined seams. Sensitivity analysis of the variables is also included in the paper.

Ore sorting is a technology that is increasingly used to process primary raw materials. Timeconsuming and expensive empirical state-of-the-art test work is carried out to assess whether the use of ore sorting for the enrichment of a particular ore makes technical and economic sense. With the innovative simulation-based approach presented here, it is possible to direct the selection of a suitable sensor based on quantitative mineralogical and textural data, thus avoiding much of the empirical studies. Required data can be collected quickly and cost-effectively using available methods of automated mineralogy. The obtained parameters such as mineral grain size distribution, modal mineralogy, mineral area and mineral density distribution have been utilised in this study to simulate the prospects of success of ore sorting, applying different types of sensors. Empirical tests with commercially available sensor systems have been conducted to experimentally validate the predictions of the simulations. The estimation of the target mineral grade can be further optimised by the use of machine learning algorithms for the integration of automated mineralogy data and sensor data. The approach can easily be adapted to other types of raw materials and thus has great potential to become a key technology for the optimisation of processing experiments. It is well known that job-related hazards and individual factors influence occupational injuries. However, research involving coalminers has been limited. This case-control study assessed the relationships of job-related hazards and individual/life style factors with injuries among underground coal miners. It compared 245 cases with at least one injury during the previous two-year period with 245 matched controls with no injury. The data were gathered via personal interview and analysed using the conditional logistic model. The significant risk factors were materials handling (adjusted OR 5.15), poor environmental/working conditions (2.63), geological/strata control-related hazards (2.35), lack of formal education (3.00), sleep disorders (1.86), alcohol consumption (2.32), disease (2.23), having a large family (5.40), and risk-taking behaviour (9.40). Machine-related hazards, sleep disorders and alcohol consumption primarily affected workers aged less than 45 years; whereas, environment/working condition-related hazards, presence of disease, smoking, risk-taking behaviour and large family size were more likely among workers aged 45 or over. Based on an actual experiment used as an example, assessment of the surface deformation due to undermining, the extensive possibilities of using a 3-D physical model and application results in practice are demonstrated. The auriferous Carbon Leader reef which is the subject of this study can be subdivided into two types of sedimentological units, each with its characteristic spatial variability. For the longwall mining method applied at Western Deep Levels gold mine, subdivision of the orebody improves the estimation of the actual error variance, but not the grade estimates themselves. This can only be achieved by choosing oreblocks of a size and shape that are maximal parallel to the longwall and minimal at right angles to it, within the limits of mining restrictions. While simple kriging is the only method that gives unbiased results, the difference between untransformed and logtransformed kriging is negligible.

Atomaer (Pty) Ltd is a technology-driven company with interests in Western Australian nickel. Atomaer (RSA) Pty Ltd is a process technology company operating in Southern Africa. It is a subsidiary of Atomaer Holdings Pty Limited (Atomaer), which has operating companies in Australia, Africa, South America, and Europe. In addition, Atomaer has substantial shareholdings in Braemore Resources Plc, a nickel company with interests in sulphide nickel projects in Western Australia and Southern Africa listed on the Alternative Investment Market of London Stock Exchange (AIM); Mintails Limited, a gold company with interests in gold operations in South Africa listed on the Australia Stock Exchange; and Brinkley Mining Plc, a uranium company with interests in Southern Africa listed on the AIM. Independence Platinum Limited (IPt) has been formed by Atomaer to undertake the commercial development and exploitation of Mintek's ConRoast technology with the strategic objective of providing independent smelting and refining facilities with lower capital and operating costs for the treatment and processing of platinum concentrates, including those with high chrome and/or nickel and/or low platinum group metal values, for the development of platinum projects by junior resource companies in South Africa. The platinum mines of South Africa have traditionally exploited the Merensky Reef of the Bushveld Complex for platinum production. However, the mining of this reef is reaching depths that require significant vertical shaft systems and costly refrigeration for access to the ore bodies at deeper levels. In the past decade, all of the platinum producers have begun to mine the UG2 reef because of its cheaper mining costs. UG2 ore usually has lower platinum group metal contents and higher chrome values. The new junior resource companies have gained access primarily to UG2 reefs. Consequently, platinum mining is becoming more UG2-based and the resulting concentrates contain high levels of chromitite. UG2 concentrates are difficult to smelt in the current six-in-line submerged arc furnaces, and this leads to increased capital and operating costs for those smelting operations. The platinum mines of South Africa produce the majority of the world's platinum metal used in automotive catalysts and jewellery. As the platinum market is forecast to grow at a healthy rate into the future, the SA producers Anglo Platinum, Impala, Lonmin, and Northam are planning to expand mining operations in the next decade. Furthermore, a number of smaller new producers who are accessing other mineral resources are entering the buoyant market and will produce platinum concentrates for purchase or toll treatment. Hence, a shortage in both smelting and refining capacities is anticipated. Further smelting and refining facilities independent of the major platinum producers will be required in South Africa by 2010. Mintek's ConRoast technology is best suited to fill the need to treat a high proportion of UG2 concentrates in a cost-effective and technically efficient manner. Atomaer base metals technology has been developed for rapid leaching of nickel and other base metals from alloy. Significant reductions in capital and operating costs are expected from the combination of the two advances in process technology compared with that installed at the existing smelters and refineries that were established over 20 years ago. Independence Platinum will be listed on AIM and the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) in 2007, and developed as an independent, vertically-integrated platinum company using its independent smelting and base metals refining facilities as a strategic platform to promote the development and mining of platinum projects by junior resource companies in South Africa through technical co-operation, strategic alliances, joint ventures, off-take, toll-refining, and marketing agreements.

Kriging estimates of geological resources are sometimes conditionally biased because the kriging plan contains too few samples. This may be done purposely in order to match the variance of the estimates to the true block dispersion variance. This work aims at evaluating the influence of conditional bias over the ultimate optimum pit design in relation to its shape, size and NPV (Net Present Value of profits). It has been restricted to two real case studies: a ‘carrot shaped’ gold porphyry in northern Greece and a manto-typeexotic copper deposit located in northern Chile. The methodology applied to each deposit consisted of generating a ‘real block model’ and four resource estimates by the use of conditional simulation and the application of four different kriging plans to the drillhole databases respectively. The estimation models vary in smoothness and conditional bias. Ultimate optimum pits were determined for the ‘real’ and the four different kriging models. Pit comparisons lead to the following conclusions: •In the worst case, conditional bias overestimated the project's NPV by 32% and 5% for the gold and copper deposits respectively. •The overestimation of high grades is more relevant than the underestimation of low grades. This resulted in a tonnage over-extraction of 148% and 1% for the gold and copper deposit respectively. This difference was attributable to the vastly different geometry of the deposits. •The smoothing effect of kriging, without or very little conditional bias, produced open pits that were different to the ‘true’ (ideal) ones and furthermore, underestimated the project's NPV by 10% and 6% for the gold and the copper deposits respectively. •Other factors that influence the optimum open pit design and to some extent control the effect of conditional bias are: the cut-off grade, the orebody geometry and distribution of grades within it and the amount of over-burden. The vision of having large, high quality diamond as part of a broad engineering tool-kit for many diverse high tech industries is now becoming a reality however, with the advent of early stage commercial availability of single crystal and poly crystalline CVD diamond.

The advent of relatively cheap computing power has precipitated a rapid growth of computer usage in the mining industry. In order to obtain most benefit from this development a need is recognised for the future mining graduate to be trained in computer literacy. This paper outlines the type of training required and describes progress to date with such a programme at the University of the Witwatersrand. Certain challenges concerning the teaching effort are discussed.
