COLLOQUIUM The President welcomed everyone present and mentioned that this was the first of the Colloquia which are to replace the Institute's monthly meetings. He stressed that discussion at Colloquia would be completely informal and would not be recorded unless the contributor requested publication. In conclusion, he thanked the organising committee, the authors and the contributors, and introduced the author of the first paper. The following papers were presented:- 'The future development of the Iron and Steel Industry' by J. P. Coetzee (Published in the Journal March 1971). Among those who contributed to the paper were Dr Bleloch, Dr K. Gebhard, Dr Way and Professor Müller. The main point made by Dr Bleloch related to the reserves of coking coal and of coal for power generation this in country and he deduced that in South Africa we are critically short of coking coal. On the basis that 4 million tons per year of coking coal are consumed for our present steel production, over 16 million tons would be required to meet the anticipated expansion in steel output by A.D. 2000. This must be set against the grim forecast made by the Coal Advisory Board in 1967 that our national reserves of coking coal will be exhausted before A.D. 2000. This gives tremendous significance to the development work presently being carried out by Iscor on alternative methods for coke production. On the other hand the blast furnace may have to be replaced by an alternative process for the reduction of iron ores, e.g., the use of rotary kilns followed by electric arc smelting. Dr Bleloch also expressed grave forebodings about the reserves of bituminous coal, pointing out that with present methods of mining the recoverable coal in any given reserve is in general only 50 per cent of that reserve. He stated that in the past seventy years great quantities of coal have been forever placed beyond the reach of mining by being undermined by extraction of lower seams or lost by being burned. A final point made by Dr Bleloch was the fast rise in the capital investment in a fully integrated steel plant, the figure having risen in the past decade from just over R200 to R350 per ton of finished steel per annum. Dr Gebhard spoke of the direct reduction processes for iron making pointing out the difficulties of securing a high percentage of reduction and the relatively high cost of smelting in electric arc furnaces. Bond's Standard Work Index (SWi) indicates the grindability of an ore, and his Operating Work Index (OWI) indicates the performance of a grinding mil or circuit. The comparison of the two indices offers a measure of the efficiency of the grinding operation. Mil (or circuit) performance, particularly on the Witwatersrand, is often indicated by the index kilowatt -hours per tonne of minus 75 µm material produced (kWh/t minus 75µm or OE75)' The paper shows that a standard kWh/t minus 75 µm index (SE75) can be obtained from the standard Bond grindability test (which provides the SWi), and asks whether the two E75 indices can be used in the various ways in which the two Work Indices are used. For the answer, the paper presents averaged values for the standard grindability indices of the gold ores of the Witwatersrand, averaged values for the performance of grinding mils operating on those ores, and the results of laboratory grinding tests on a composite of several Witwatersrand ores. The particle-size indicator for the calculation of the Wi indices, the am size, is constant in its relation to the largest particles present, whereas the percentage minus 75 µm, the indicator of size for the E75 index, varies with the degree of grinding in its relation to the size of the largest particles. Because of this difference, the standard Work Index increases as the grind becomes finer, whereas the standard kWh/t minus 75 µ value decreases. The Wi and E75 indices nevertheless serve similar purposes when applied to moderately fine grinding-finer than 70 per cent minus 75 µm. Open circuit laboratory grinding tests revealed three stages in the grinding process, and credible values for the open circuit Work Index were obtained only from the second stage. The conversion of the open circuit Work Indices to the equivalent of close circuit indices by the application of Bonds open circuit inefficiency factor (a constant for grinds indicated by the d80 size) was of limited success; however, the development of a conversion factor related to particle-size should not be difficult. Initially difficulty was experienced in the calculation of the 0E75 indices from the results of the laboratory tests, but it was eventually considered that a constant value of the index derived from the results would be close to the true open-circuit index. The open-circuit grinding test could there fore be a convenient method for the detection of differences in the grindability of ores.

Following the Coalbrook disaster in 1960, research into coal pillar strength resulted in the adoption of the concept of a safety factor for the design of stable pillars in South African coal mining. At the time when the original statistical analysis was performed by Salamon and Munro in the early 1960s, 27 cases of failed pillar workings were considered suitable for inclusion in the database of failed pillars. Pillar failure did not stop after the introduction of the safety factor formula by Salamon and Munro (1967). In the ensuing years, pillars that were created before the application of the formula deteriorated and later failed, as did ones that were created after the introduction of the formula. This means that over time, the database of failed pillar cases increased in size, allowing ever more reliable analyses to be performed. The number of failed cases in the database had grown from the original 27 in the 1960s to 86 by 2011. All the failed cases are contained in the updated database. The database of stable pillars, which is also used in the derivation of strength formulae, has now been extended from 125 to 337 cases. The new database of intact pillar cases is more complete as it bridges the time gap between the Salamon and Munro (1967) and the Van der Merwe (2006) databases. The original requirements for inclusion into the database were satisfied in the compilation of this latest collection. The characteristics of the original database of intact pillars did not change in a meaningful way. The mining depth and pillar dimensions of the new database are largely as they were in the original database. Time-related trends with regard to pillar dimensions and depth of mining could not be found, indicating that the geometrical parameters of coal mining in South Africa have not changed meaningfully in approximately a century of mining. The characteristics of cases in the updated database of failed pillars does not differ substantially from the one published by Van der Merwe (2006). The same difference between that database and the original Salamon and Munro database, namely that the average safety factor of the failed cases had increased dramatically, from 1.0 to 1.5, is still apparent. This may be due to the inclusion of more failures from specific areas that exhibit a disproportionate number of failures at higher safety factors. These areas are the Vaal Basin, Klip River, and Free State coalfields. The new database confirms yet again that there is no correlation between the safety factors of failed pillars and their time of failure. In 1904 it was reconstituted as the Chemical Metallurgical and Mining Society of South Africa and in 1956 it became the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. The objects of the Institute are to advance the science and practice of mining and metallurgy, to afford opportunities for the interchange and recording of knowledge of mining and metallurgy and to ensure high standards of professional conduct and competence. Membership benefits include monthly issues of the Journal of the Institute, monthly General Meetings at which papers are read, symposia, excursions to mining and industrial concerns and the use of club facilities at Kelvin House. Technical journals received on an exchange basis are available to members at the Johannesburg Public Library. The current membership of the Institute is over 1,600. Membership applications are accepted from suitably qualified persons and the requirements for entrance to the various grades of membership are summarised below. The development of a cyanidation route for the treatment of gold-plant gravity concentrates is described. This work was carried out as a natural consequence of earlier improvements to the recovery of gold in the gravity sections of existing gold plants. Concern about the environmental aspects of the conventional amalgamation process was further motivation in the development of an alternative procedure. It was found that the partial pressure of oxygen in solution was the most critical reactionrate determining factor. The rate of gold dissolution was shown to be controlled by the reaction rate below approximately 25°C and by diffusion above that temperature. Thus, the efficiency of pulp agitation and oxygen partial pressure permitted a high degree of control over the rate of gold dissolution. The use of oxygen rather than air significantly increased the dissolution rate of both gold and silver. The solubilities of sodium, calcium, and potassium aurocyanide complexes under simulated reaction conditions were studied, and it was established that the values for the sodium and calcium complexes were limited, requiring the use of lower pulp densities and higher reaction temperatures for the treatment of very high-grade concentrates. The presence of excessive amounts of tramp iron in such concentrates of up to 25 per cent by mass was found to result in poor gold dissolution owing to the cementation of gold under certain reaction conditions. The maintenance of high oxygen partial pressures, together with high cyanide concentrations, high pH levels, and the presence of calcium in the system, all aided in passivating the tramp iron. Copper, gold, and iron were shown to be the main cyanide-consuming elements. Optimum gold dissolution was obtained in a closed bench-scale reactor incorporating a flotation-machine type of agitator for effective pulp agitation and oxygenation, the oxygen being recirculated. The reactor was designed to operate under a very small positive pressure. After reaction times of 2 to 6 hours at temperatures in the region of 30°C, both the gold and the silver dissolution averaged 99,S per cent. In the case of very high-grade concentrates, it was shown that gold could be floated in the same reactor by drawing off the flotation concentrate through a port in the reactor. A flotation recovery of 87,4 per cent of the gold in 3,9 per cent by mass was obtained. The recovery of osmiridium from cyanide-leach residues and the electrowinning of gold from the pregnant liquors were also considered as processing aspects in the treatment of gold-plant belt concentrates. Final table tailings with a gold concentration of 10to 12 gft were obtained. The results of the investigation strongly suggested that an alternative cyanidation route for the treatment of gold-plant concentrates was technically feasible, provided the system included effective agitation and oxygenation. In the case of lower-grade concentrates, cyanidation followed by the electrowinning of gold appears to be the simplest route, while, for high-grade concentrates, flotation and smelting of the concentrate followed by cyanidation of the flotation tailings are suggested. The use of oxygen rather than air for sparging the pulp would depend largely on the grade of material to be treated. A preliminary comparison of the costs related to the amalgamation and cyanidation processes for the recovery of gold from such concentrates indicated very similar capital and operating costs. It was concluded that other considerations, e.g. toxicity, safety, and lower labour requirements, were more important than such small cost differences. Furthermore, the 'opening' of the gold-plant gravity circuit, which would be made possible by a cyanidation route, would further reduce the operating costs because of the subsequent decrease in the tonnage to be treated.

Dr H. J. van Eck (Honorary Life Member): "Mr President, I regard it as a signal honour that I was invited to address the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy on its 75th Anniversary. I also wish to add my congratulations and good wishes to the many you have already received on this memorable occasion. Seventy-five years is indeed a good age and the achievements of your Institute certainly justify this special celebration. South Africa owes her present prosperity largely to the technological ability and determination of her own people. Members of the Institute contributed in large measure to this great development of our country and through the years have upheld their high reputation for scientific integrity, dynamic enterprise and dedicated service. It was their knowledge which provided the key to unlocking the mineral wealth which lay dormant for countless ages. The history of world mining dates back many centuries. We know of the mercury mines of Spain, the tin mines of Cornwall and the zinc mines of Poland, but it was not until colonization of the western hemisphere started in about 1500 that mining of any consequence began in North America. It is true that the peoples of South America and Mexico had accumulated wealth out of gold and silver, but industrialized mining was not a feature of these agrarian cultures. The mining wealth that eventually developed in North America was based on advances in the technology of processing minerals and served as an incentive to people in other new countries. Big mines were opened elsewhere in the world. From Canada, Mexico, Venezuela, Brazil, Peru, Chile, Bolivia, Rhodesia, Australia, Burma and India, to name but a few, there has been a steadily increasing production of an expanding range of minerals and metals. By the middle of the 20th century the trend was to increase the production and use of such comparatively uncommon metals as cobalt, nickel, titanium, and others, and a great mining rush started to search for, and develop, the deposits of uranium, and related radio-active minerals. It is worth pausing a few minutes to reflect that most of early mining was based on the recovery of virgin metals like gold and silver or easily treated high grade ores of copper, tin and zinc. Today, much of this type of mining would be regarded as picking the eyes out of the mine. With the development of improved ore separating, ore concentration and recovery processes, we developed into bulk mining and bulk treatment and in South Africa we have some very big mines, also outside the gold mining industry at Phalaborwa, for instance. Mining techniques are applied which compare with the best in the world. These large mines could only develop because of the perfection of new concentrating techniques and, of course, because of the development of markets. We have mentioned nickel and cobalt. These names were given to those mischievous mining sprites called nickels and kobolds to whom the suspicious miners ascribed their inability to smelt copper from copper nickel or arsenious copper ores. In South Africa, the presence of minerals was known to the modern Western world as far back as 1497 when Vasco da Gama found the native 'strandlopers' at the St. Helena Bay wearing copper rings. In 1669, after the British East India Company had formed their settlement, they employed miners and assayers in prospecting for minerals and in 1685 found traces of copper in the copper mountain of Namaqualand where some 170 years later a rich deposit of copper was to be opened up. G. H. HENDERSON INTRODUCTION It is a pleasure to have read Mr Schuman's wide ranging and highly informative paper and also to congratulate him. Before proceeding to give views on the use and preservation of coal in South Africa, it is perhaps apposite to look at the South African scene on the world canvas. Mr Schuman's figures in his Table I are highly revealing. The Table shows expected consumption, export and import demand in the year 1980 by the continents of the world. The Republic of South Africa is shown as one of only four exporting countries at that date, although in the interim, Australia has become an exporter and will continue to grow as an exporter of coal. Huge fields have been proved in recent years. There is reason to think that for some years, coal and its economical uses have been under-estimated. The importation of oil carries a constant question mark and the exciting possibilities expressed in the uses of Dranium a decade ago for power generation, appear to have met with some setback. Present indications are that breederreactors will be delayed until about 1990. The capital cost of such reactors, too, is enormous. By 1980 it has been estimated that 20 per cent of the energy required by the leading ten nations of the world will come from nuclear power, but 80 per cent would then remain for fossil fuels and hydro generation. COAL DEMAND AND USAGE It is of interest to record that coal production in all the countries of Europe has declined markedly in the last 25 years. This is due to competition from oil, gas and nuclear power and also for sociological reasons; but there are signs that efforts will be made to resuscitate, at least in some measure, the mining of coking coals for which there is a strong and growing demand. Possibly all hard coal now mined in Germany has coking properties and that country is self-sufficient in this commodity. Germany might perhaps consider selling coking coal to her neighbours and importing additional coal for power-raising purposes. It has been frequently stated in American publications that the coal reserves of the D.S.A. are sufficient for 1 000 years. What that means, I do not know, but it is at least an indication that America has huge reserves of coal. Domestic and export demand in the U.S.A. in 1968 exceeded production for the first time. In 1969, the United States' output amounted to some 556 million tons, an increase of less than 2 per cent on the previous year. The output achieved fell short of demand, domestic and export, by more than 7 000 000 tons. This has caused and is continuing to cause anxiety in the U.S.A. In many countries young men for a number of reasons, largely environmental and social, are not coming forward in sufficient numbers for mining requirements and the same pattern has revealed itself in the Republic. This is, indeed, alarming because mining men in large numbers will be required to meet the estimated tonnage requirements set out in the following Table: It is difficult to visualise the replacement of these coal requirements either by oil or by nuclear fuels. The coal must be mined and men are required for the purpose. Unless a greater section of the population is allowed to participate in the more responsible aspects of mining, there is a serious likelihood that demand will not be matched by output. In addition to local demand, a lively export trade is possible. Exports are dependent on the future capacity of the South African Railways and Harbours and on Government policy. An export figure of 10000000 tons per year during the decade can be visualised and this figure would raise total estimated sales production to a figure of over 100 000 000 tons in 1980. "The smelter at Sudbury Integrated Nickel Operations, located in Sudbury, Ontario, operates a single electric AC furnace. This furnace treats nickel sulphide concentrates produced by Glencore and third-party feeds and as such its performance is key to the company’s nickel supply chain. Currently the plant has two shutdowns per year in order to carry out significant repairs on matte tap-holes.Improved monitoring systems that enable better prediction of tap-hole wear have been a continued focus. The electric furnace is an essential piece of the smelter flow sheet requiring the need for planned tap-hole maintenance along with robust systems for management according to to this plan.The ability to meet our goal of zero harm is ensuring that safe practices are in place. Detailed procedures and cool-down practices have been implemented to ensure that required matte chemistry and temperature criteria can be met during the period leading into a shutdown for tapblock maintenance.A significant repair of the electric furnace will take place in 2015. During this rebuild, the sidewalls and matte endwall will be replaced. There is work underway to improve wall and matte end performance in an attempt to extend the time between rebuilds. This paper will review the approach taken towards this end."

Over many decades, numerous feasibility studies have demonstrated, that the production of sulphuric acid remains the most viable option of sulphur recovery from smelter off gas and abatement of SO2 emissions to the atmosphere. This is particularly more pronounced as smaller but more concentrated off-gas flows are to be treated from smelters, and enhanced sulphuric acid processes be-come available. Off-gas handling systems represent a significant capital and operating cost burden to the metallurgical operation. Modern pyrometallurgical smelter processes for sulphide ores based on the use of oxygen-enriched air, produce relatively small off-gas flows with high SO2 concentrations in the smelter gas of 30?60 %-vol. of SO2. This is a prerequisite for substantial cost reductions in the smelter off-gas handling and treatment system. As an alternative to sulphuric acid production, numerous scrubbing concepts with alkali or dual-alkali combinations as well as organic absorbents have been proposed. Also the reduction of the SO2 to elemental sulphur has frequently been studied. Very few of those alternative processes have been built in industrial scale, but all were generally characterized by none sustainable operation due to cost reasons, problems with issues related to chemicals used and by-products or poor availability. Thus the traditional concept of converting the SO2 to sulphuric acid is most common, although regarded as un-economic, but is at least a proven, environmentally sustainable and reliable way of sulphur gas processing. With the high acid price levels these days, operating companies are even able to generate significant revenue with their otherwise ?fatal? acid. Even though smelter gas is available at high SO2 concentrations, in a conventional acid plant one would add large amounts of air to dilute the gas down to a suitable concentration of 12?13 (14) %-vol. SO2. Dealing with higher SO2 concentrations in smelter acid plants is not feasible, as the gas exit temperature of the catalytic oxidation step would exceed the allowable limit for the catalyst. Hence those conventional acid plants are characterised by the use of large equipment, i.e. high capital cost, high energy consumption and limited flexibility. The newly developed LUREC® process can handle off-gas with significantly higher gas concentrations, even in excess of 25 %-vol. SO2. It is entirely based on well-proven equipment and unit operations. The first industrial application, operating with 16?18 %-vol. SO2 will be presented in this paper, along with the fundamentals of the process. It will be demonstrated that the process requires inherently lower capital cost, fewer operating cost, offers better energy recovery and lower emissions as compared to conventional design. While most existing smelter acid plants would have some built-in spare capacity, any significant increase of smelter capacity, say of 30%, can basically not be accommodated without installing an additional parallel new acid plant unit. An add-on LUREC® module can remove any such restriction, while simultaneously de-bottlenecking the existing acid plant. The paper also discusses the present status of the add-on technology for smelter acid plant expansions with respect to technical boundary conditions of different process alternatives as well as economic and environmental aspects. Application of the LUREC® process to modern smelter acid plants operating with high SO2 gas concentration, will lead to a substantial reduction of the specific size of the gas processing equipment and equivalent savings in capital and operating cost. The successful commissioning of the Cerro Verde project in Peru at the end of 2006 marked the culmination of the efforts of many in the industry over many years to have high pressure grinding roll technology recognized and accepted as a legitimate alternative to the conventional approach to large-scale hard rock comminution circuit design. Other hard-rock projects that have recently adopted HPGR include Freeport (Indonesia), Boddington (Australia) and Amplats Potgietersrus (South Africa). With the increasing acceptance of this technology, the need for technical presentations and articles exhorting the industry to adapt has diminished somewhat, and it is considered appropriate now to shift the emphasis to the provision of information for those considering embracing change. This article endeavours to answer frequently asked questions on the subject of high pressure grinding roll technology, with particular reference to its application in the hard rock minerals processing sector.

Geological mapping makes an important contribution to orebody knowledge during the evaluation of structurally controlled gold veins. Orebody knowledge comprises an understanding of mineralization characteristics relevant to evaluation, mining, processing and environmental issues and allows project expectations to be realistically set. Structural interpretation to define continuity and mineralization controls is a key part of geological risk reduction and the reporting mineral resources using the JORC and other codes. The Dolgellau gold belt is a small British field that produced an estimated 150 000 oz from narrow quartz veins. Historical records, recent exploration and production data, published material, and accessible surface and underground exposure provide a valuable case study. Previous mapping has shown the general geometry of vein systems, but tends to accentuate gross geological continuity. Recent work has attempted to determine internal vein architecture and examine the significance of the historical views of ore shoot controls. The work resulted in the definition of vein continuity scenarios for the gold belt and evaluation expectations associated with each. This has, in turn, led to a realistic view of what can be achieved from an evaluation and project development perspective.

This paper describes the development and implementation of amine-wide continuous stability monitoring system at the Declines Section, Anglo Platinum Union JV. The Declines Section at Union JV experienced a number of large panel collapses during 2005 and 2006. As well as posing a major safety risk, the panel collapses had a major effect on production since the Declines Section is a semi-mechanized operation. The collapses would often extend into the mechanized strike roadways, resulting in a loss of access to both current and future production faces. The collapses have been largely overcome owing to a change in support design and the implementation of a mine-wide stability monitoring programme. This paper describes the precursors to collapses, which were identified using continuous closure measurements and the remedial measures taken. It also outlines the design and introduction of a robust and reliable monitoring tool, which is now used on a mine-wide basis to provide early warning of large-scale collapses.

The advancement in Information Technology has resulted in a change in workflow practice in our Mineral Resource Management (MRM) offices on the mines and at our corporate office. This paper discusses the AngloGold approach in defining an IT strategy for MRM, a brief overview of systems usage and benefits. AngloGold has gone through a transformation phase and has positioned itself as a world-class, low cost producer. To support this objective, an initiative has been launched to provide the MRM division with an integrated MRM technical suite of systems with support of a Management Information System. Technical systems for a tabular orebody are not freely available and hence it took AngloGold almost seven years and a significant amount of capital to develop an integrated suite of technical systems. AngloGold MRM IT adopted the typical Zachman framework (value chain) approach in the analysis process and formulated the final deliverable in terms of AngloGold’s strategy. Major benefits have been realized through the ability to change planning scenarios in a short period of time and hence be able to increase reserves and NPV. The development of MRIS, which will become the flagship in AngloGold’s portfolio of systems is in phase two and this system will allow AngloGold to publish Resources and Reserves as per SAMREC and the JORC Code at will. The availability of information at all levels of the operations has made making decisions easier and hence some specialized reports such as the Basic Mining Equation were developed from the Corporate Data warehouse and from the MRM reporting database. Decision Support Systems(DSS) such as Business Objects and Oracle Express are now being used to assist in the process. The decision to use Business Objects to replace SAS reporting as the core reporting tool has resulted in the empowerment of the user and major cost saving as far as the use of consultants to set up standard reports.

South Africa has produced more than a third of the total gold mined throughout history and remains a major although, until recently, no longer the largest producer of gold. South African gold production peaked in 1970 with an output of 1 000 t, a major component of the western world?s gold production, with the development of the country?s economy having been based largely on this mineral wealth. The costs and difficulties of increasingly deep-level mining, coupled with increasing labour costs and the low gold price until relatively recently, have seen production fall steadily since then, with the closure of many mines including those of the Central Rand Goldfield in the mid seventies. Thus in 1998, only 464 t were produced, with 342 tons being produced in 2004. In 2006, 275 tons of gold were produced and after more than 100 years was the last year as the world?s largest gold producer. In 2008 gold production was 221 tons, making South Africa the third largest gold producer after China (292 t) and the USA (234 t). Gold production would have been lower if it had not been for massive tailings dam retreatment operations that started in the late seventies, including in the Central Rand Goldfield. Mining of a remaining deep and lower grade shallow resources has now also become a major focus and has recently lead to a rebirth of reef mining on the Central Rand Goldfield.

Gone are the days of stock-standard diamond beneficiation and final recovery circuits that could, with minor modifications, be adapted to treat any diamond-bearing ore source. A new era has dawned, offering the opportunity to streamline existing diamond processing operations or develop simpler, more efficient, and economical diamond processing plants, with the focus on more efficient comminution, beneficiation, and final recovery. This change in scene has been brought about by: ? The introduction, rapid development, and maturation of multiple comminution, sorting, and recovery technologies ? The need to adapt to a new standard of project approach post the commodity super-cycle phase, where optimizing existing operations and developing scalable, ?fit for purpose? new mines are fast becoming the norm in diamond processing plants in both primary and alluvial operations ? The quest for energy efficiency and lower labour costs ? More remote and inaccessible reserves (under lakes, tops of mountains etc.). This paper serves to identify some technology advances and demonstrates how these could be considered as replacements for or in combination with conventional technologies to arrive at an optimum techno-economic solution. To name a few applications/technologies: ? Comminution: conventional cone crusher, modified/specialized cone crusher, and the high-pressure grinding roll (HPGR). Although significant advances have been made in recent years, this paper only briefly covers comminution within the beneficiation circuit design ? Waste sorting: NIR (near-infrared) sorting, optical (colour) sorting, XRF (X-ray fluorescence) ? Primary concentration by combining dense media separation (DMS) with either XRT (X-ray transmissive), pulsed X-ray, jigs, or pan plants depending on the application, scale, and economics ? Final recovery of diamonds with either conventional X-ray technology, pulsed X-ray technology, or XRT. From recent studies, it can be concluded that there is no longer a standard solution, but rather the ?right? or appropriate solution. Through combining a sound knowledge of the ore source (ore dressing studies or onmine data gathering) and leveraging off the advances in technologies, one is able, through trade-off studies, to arrive at the ultimate techno-economic configuration, the ?right? solution. Emphasis is placed on maximizing diamond recoveries through appropriate technology selection and minimizing the associated costs in an effort to de-bottleneck or improve efficiencies of existing diamond processing plants, or to arrive at the ideal new diamond process plant design..

Determining the most convenient plant location is one of the most commonly encountered problems in engineering applications. This paper presents a fuzzy multiple attribute decision making (FMADM) model which is developed for the selection of the optimum plant location for natural stone factories in the mining industry. The criteria affecting the decision making process in natural stone industry were determined to solve the plant location problem in the FMADM model. To determine the optimum plant location for a new natural stone factory, which is planned to be established by a mining firm located in the Eskisehir region of Turkey, an analysis was carried out by incorporating the method and the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) method. The analysis shows that the Yager?s method can easily be applied to the selection of plant location in the natural stone and mining industry when the difficulties encountered in the application process of the AHP method is taken into account. "Narrow tabular platinum group element deposits in the Bushveld Complex of South Africa are typically evaluated by diamond core drilling from surface. Several short deflections are drilled from each mother hole in order to obtain multiple intersections at a close spacing (less than 1 m). Examination of the intersections from deflection drilling revealed the importance of these deflections in understanding the representivity of the borehole, obtaining an estimate of the nugget effect, and mitigating the undesirable effect of the high grade variability at the ultra-short range that is a characteristic of these deposits. The use of deflections in estimation was investigated by means of a number of techniques and scenarios in order to find the most appropriate way to use them in an estimate. A significantly improved level of confidence was gained from using multiple close-spaced intersections rather than a single borehole intersection. IntroductionThe Upper Group 2 chromitite layer (UG2 or UG2 Reef) is known for its remarkable geological continuity, being traced almost uninterrupted for tens of kilometres. However, what is often less well emphasized is the high variability in platinum group element (PGE) grade and thickness (and therefore PGE content) and internal reef stratigraphy over very short distances (several metres or even tens of centimetres).This paper examines the application of short drill-hole deflections in evaluating UG2 PGE mineral resources at Marikana in the western Bushveld Complex of South Africa."
