Notes on Iron Age copper-smelting technology in the Transvaal by H. M. FRIEDE, Ph.D. and R. H. STEEL (Visitors) Earlier reports on Iron Age copper metallurgy and copper-smelting techniques in the Transvaal are surveyed, and a description and tentative classification of the copper furnaces are given. The analyses of furnace slags and sherds of glazed crucibles from archaeological sites of the Transvaal and the neighbouring Orange Free State pro. vide evidence of copper smelting there in Iron Age times. . An investigation conducted by the Department of Archaeology of the University ofthe Witwatersrand provided information on the details of furnace construction and smelting processes, on the composition of the materials used and produced, and on the making and handling of tools and accessories, such as bellows and tongs, needed by Iron Age smelters. Three models (the KaondejVenda furnace, the Rooiberg crucible furnace, and the Uitkomst furnace) were constructed and operated as a demonstration of Iron Age copper smelting as it was practised in the Transvaal.

This paper focuses on developing a comprehensive and pragmatic information technology (IT) strategy for low-margin construction activities. This forms part of the realignment of the general business strategy, and refocusing the operational model. The main elements of the IT strategy formation are analysis of the current IT environment in terms of software and hardware, carrying out a gap analysis, and developing individual functional digitalisation strategies in construction execution based on Building Information Modelling (BIM), business administration processes, communication, business intelligence (BI) and reporting, and data security. Further, substantial emphasis is given to the sustainable strategy implementation in terms of hardware and software readjustments, their integration, user training, and defining the way forward.

Aspects of the production of platinum group metals by reductive smelting in direct-current arc furnace processes are investigated using a computational modelling approach. The replacement of fossil carbon as a reductant by alternative reductants such as silicon carbide, ferrosilicon, and hydrogen is desirable for reducing direct greenhouse gas emissions from such processes, but the impact of these changes on the electrical operability of the process is poorly understood. This paper presents a study of plasma arc behaviour in the context of the ConRoast® reductive smelting process for Upper Group 2 ore as well as processes for recycling of automotive catalysts, using an integrated computational modelling workflow. It was found that the freeboard gas compositions, plasma properties, and arc behaviour were all affected by the choice of reductant, particularly in carbon-free smelting using ferrosilicon or hydrogen.

"This work was carried out to determine the influence of rock properties and drilling machine parameters on the penetration rate at the SJ pit of Rössing Uranium Mine, Namibia. Rock properties (uniaxial compressive strength, tensile strength, and modulus of elasticity) of samples collected were determined in the laboratory. Drilling experiments were conducted in which feed pressure, air pressure, rotary speed, weight on the bit, and torque were varied to measure their effect on the penetration rate. The uniaxial compressive strength varied from 90–180 MPa for layered marble-quartzite and banded gneiss. Increases in feed pressure, weight on the bit, and rotary speed beyond the optimum level led to a decrease in penetration rate and caused the drill bit to ‘stall’. Results of the study revealed that penetration rate increases with an increase in the feed pressure and air pressure. After reaching a maximum value, the penetration rate begins to decrease despite increasing feed pressure. A very high torque causes the drill bit to stall, since the feed pressure is too high and the air pressure is not sufficient to remove the cuttings from blast-hole at maxium bailing velocities. The average penetration rate varied from 19 to 45 m/h for phase 2 of the pit, and from 17 to 68 m/h for phase 3. The optimum drilling machine parameters obtained in phase 2 and phase 3 were slightly lower than those currently being used at the mine. The trials of the optimum machine parameters will assist in reducing the cost of drilling, which varied from N$29.48 to N$36.31 per metre for the tricone bit. Rock properties and geological conditions are the uncontrollable parameters. "The complex planning required to achieve any planned production yields multiple and dissociated responses over the life of project (LOP). The customary decision-making process negates the possibilities of developing optimized and integral solutions from operating levels up to business and strategic levels. This results in an inefficient project or overall underperformance of the operation.In the project setting, disconnected trade-offs and improved performance studies become inadequate, because they are site-specific and use only a few comparative parameters. They are often based on a small data-set.Decisions taken to achieve overall objectives require the correct determination and dissemination of key performance indicators (KPIs). The KPIs indicate efficiency in operation, whereby the marginal rate of technical substitution corresponds to the rate of production. It is the necessary condition for optimization. Performance realization for sustainability follows optimization modelling, the latter often being presented with financial results such as business net present value (NPV). It considers techno-financial constraints and provides a strategic and aligned outlook of KPI decisions for an enhanced and integrated outcome.This paper explains a mining case study that is rendered efficient, and through business optimization (BO) short-term and sustainable targets are reached. Business optimization increases the NPV by 14.7%. This is achieved by challenging conventional decision-making associated with maximizing business value by including environmental externalities within the LOP."

In the era of Industry 4.0, technologies such as Big Data (BD) and the Internet of Things (IoT) play a key role, especially for multi-site manufacturing companies. In such companies, the challenge is to collect and process massive amounts of data from industrial devices and extract key information from this data in real-time for ad hoc decision-making. The ability to analyse data from industrial devices translates directly into streamlined production processes, cost optimisation, prevention of unplanned events, and safety during operation. In this context, particular attention should be paid to Big Data Analytics (BDA), whose main source is the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). The purpose of this paper is to propose an IT system architecture incorporating BD and the IoT for a mining company. The paper presents results from a literature review focusing on available BD and the IoT solutions for industry (mining in particular) for the purposes of the acquisition, integration, and advanced analysis of data. The advantages and disadvantages of the different solutions were indicated and gaps in the accessibility to dedicated functionality are identified. Based on the analysis of a multi-site mining company, the main challenges faced by such companies planning to implement BD and IoT solutions are identified. Also, a proposal for an IT system architecture incorporating BD and IoT for a mining company is described in the paper. The contribution of the article consists of the identification of the challenges faced by mining companies planning to implement BD and the IoT solutions, and the proposal of an IT system architecture that allows BDA whose main source is the IIoT.

Dimension stone mining is Increasing because of growing demand from the building and construction industries. Diamond wire saw cutting is a popular dimension stone mining technique around the world. Estimation of the production cost for this method is critical for these operations. n this research a production cost model was developed for the mining of granite using a diamond wire saw. Cost and production data were collected from a granitic dolerite operation in Pakistan for a 4.5-year period, and analysed to identify the cost components. Fuel (34%), labour (15%), consumables (40%), and maintenance (5%) were found to be the four major cost components in this operation. A regression-based dimension stone production cost model incorporating statistically significant variables was developed. The data presented a strong correlation of production cost with fuel, labour, and consumables costs. Finally, a production cost model based on the consumption cost of diamond wire is presented. The model was verified using actual production cost data, which indicated 95% (R2 = 0.95) variance in the data between the predicted and actual production cost values. The model may help field engineers in computing their dimension stone operational cost during the cutting phase.

The study was intent on assessing the socio-economic impact of a zinc mine in South Africa through the application of people-centric digital tools using a case study research methodology. The global mining industry is undergoing significant technological shifts to modernize, improve operational sustainability, and align with the environmental, social, and governance (ESG) agenda. While the case study mine is a more modernized mine, continuous improvement around the ‘social’ pillar becomes critical, and to this end application of people-centered digital tools presented as the vehicle to understand community needs and impacts. Despite considerable annual corporate social investment by mines annually, the overall impact or social return on investment is marginally understood. Towards contributing to addressing this gap, digital ESG ‘social-related’ data gathering tools for mines decision-making were developed, including the training-needs assessment tool, community-social needs assessment, small, micro, and medium enterprise (SMME) communications and engagement tool, digital leadership competencies gap assessment tool, and change management blueprint, which further allowed for customization to the mining context. Hence, the novelty of this paper relates to applying digital tools to provide real-time information of the needs of a community, both socially and economically. The findings suggested that these digital tools enabled gathering of information for the establishment of regional and operational baselines towards enabling of social investment returns in relation to socio-economic transformation development interventions. These tools have been applied to a zinc mine context, with lessons and experiences obtained through this study, invaluable to the application of these digital tool in other mines in South Africa. The study was conducted in September 2023 across five host communities, surrounding the zinc mine, in the Northern Cape region, with 120 participants involved in the application of three relevant community-related digital tools, which included the training needs, community-social needs, and SMME communications and engagement tools. It was evident that the digital ESG tools could be used for data gathering for the mine’s informed decision-making and allowed for securing of insights on community needs in near real-time, and further proved practical for community use.

The results revealed that the pozzolanic activity of the gold mine tailings and their main mineral phases improved by mechanical activation. Under the same activation conditions, the activated mica powders possessed the highest pozzolanic activity index, followed by the activated feldspar, and the activated quartz exhibited the lowest pozzolanic activity index. The addition of calcium oxide promoted the formation of amorphous C–(A)–S–H gel for all paste samples, and stratlingite and hydrotalcite were observed in calcium oxide activated mica paste. The addition of natural anhydrite promoted the formation of ettringite for the pastes of calcium oxide activated aluminosilicates materials (gold mine tailings, mica, and feldspar). Furthermore, the pozzolanic activity indexes of the mechanically activated gold mine tailings and their main mineral phases were tested to be qualified for use as supplementary cementitious material in cement. This paper provided an innovative approach for recycling gold mine tailings as supplementary cementitious materials in cement, which would be environmentally friendly and cost-effective. Probability-based empirical methods were employed as an alternative approach to predicting uncertainties associated with rock mass properties. The focus was on developing probabilistic spreadsheets to forecast rock mass classification indexes. Histograms were constructed to describe the best distribution in predicting rock mass properties. The developed models also offer utility in predicting the impact of discontinuities within the rock mass on rock strength and rock mass classification systems. Statistical analyses identified volumetric joint count, joint spacing, joint frequency, and rock strength as the most influential parameters. Moreover, the statistical analysis revealed varying degrees of correlation among different rock mass properties. While some properties demonstrated significant correlations suitable for modelling, others did not align well with any correlation model. The results highlight the need for a comprehensive approach to rock mass characterization, considering multiple factors beyond volumetric joint count. Geological complexities, including tectonic activity and weathering processes, may obscure direct correlations. These results emphasize the importance of empirical modelling and detailed site investigations for accurate assessment of rock mass quality and stability in the Himalaya.

This paper describes research done to remove apatite (phosphorus) from hematite ultrafine (70% finer than 25 micron) concentrate, recovered by electromagnetic separators at the FST Tailing Recovery Plant located in Chadormalu Iron Ore Complex through reverse froth flotation. As a result, iron and phosphorus content in magnetic concentrate (flotation feed) were 53.52% and 0.58%, respectively. Therefore, to increase the Fe content and decrease the P content of the sample, reverse flotation tests were applied. Chemical reagents used in this research consisted of sodium silicate as a depressant, sodium hydroxide and sodium carbonate as pH regulators, Alke & Dirol as fatty acid collectors and MIBC as frother. Process parameters including dosages of collectors, depressant and frother, preparation times of depressant and collectors, steps and time of frothing and pH range were selected. After doing flotation tests, in optimum condition, dosages of collectors were 1200 g/t, depressant 1200 g/t, pH in the range of 9.5 to 10, preparation time of collectors in the first step was eight minutes and at the other steps, four minutes; the number of frothing steps 4 and frothing time in each stage was three minutes. In this case, it was observed that the amount of phosphorus in the final concentrate was reduced to 0.05%, the Fe content increased from 53.52% to 61.66% and the Fe recovery achieved was 82.21%. "Although South Africa possesses more than 80% of the world’s platinum reserves, its reputation for reliability in supplying platinum to global markets is under threat. This is due to the 49% decrease in output per worker (1999–2014), while the domestic costs have risen by more than 10% annually for the past 5 years. In addition, the continued decline in the commodity price by 38.3% (2012–2016) has resulted in a significant portion of the sector producing at a loss in 2015. The Chamber of Mines (now the Minerals Councilof South Africa) has suggested that solutions to improve productivity and reduce cost pressures are required. This research aims to provide operational excellence through the application of event chain project management (ECPM) to improve productivity and reduce operational costs. A case study was used to carry out research in platinum mines, with data collected using a motion-time study to measure the current efficiency of operations in each mining stope through actual activity durations. The results indicate that through the application of the event chain project management methodology, risks affecting the mining stope schedule can be managed, the efficiency of operations was improved by reducing the time spent on each activity, productivity was increased by shortening the project duration, and operational costs were reduced in the process. IntroductionSouth Africa’s total mining industry production was 4.9% lower in 2016 than in 2015; it decreased by 1.9% year-on-year in December 2016, with the main contributor to this negative trend being the platinum group metals (PGMs) with a drop of 15.1% and contributing -3.8% percentage points (Statistics South Africa, 2016). Although South Africa possesses more than 80% of the world’s platinum reserves, the 8% drop in production output since 2008 has put the platinum mining industry under the threat of being seen as an unreliable supplier to global markets. This decline in production is caused by the 49% decrease in output per worker between 1999 and 2014. In addition, the continued decline in the commodity price by 38.3% from 2012 to 2016 and an increase in operational costs during the same period resulted in a significant portion of the sector producing at a loss in 2015. A turnaround strategy is required to overcome these challenges. The Chamber of Mines has suggested, among others, the need for solutions to improve productivity and reduce cost pressures. Increased depths of conventional gold and platinum mines, longer travelling times as working places move further from the shaft, and ancillary activities taking place in the mining cycle reduce the useable time spent at them workface. Current shift lengths of 8 hours 20 minutes may no longer be adequate ton complete required mining activities.The impact of mineworker commuting times on shift work is also not well understood. The aim of this research was to draft a framework to optimize shift cycles in order to maximize productivity, health, safety, and wellness in the South African mining sector. The framework was informed by a review of the literature, case studies at a local gold mine and platinum mine, and a workshop with industry experts. The findings indicate potential advantages of extended shift lengths and continuous operations, such as improved productivity, asset utilization, and employee morale. However, concerns included fatigue and the associated safety hazards, particularly when working longer shifts, night shifts, and numerous consecutive shifts. Job demands, personal factors, and commuting times are further considerations when scheduling shifts. The ideal shift system for the mining sector should holistically consider and balance operational requirements, health and safety, and employees’ and their families’ requirements, and suit the unique needs of each operation. Changes in shift cycles will require a structured change management process, which involves all stakeholders, and could help to enhance the viability of the South African mining sector.

The use of geometallurgical modelling is becoming more common in concentrator plant design and during the operational phase. Predictive modelling aims to define optimised process parameters for the concentrator plant to accommodate variability within the ore feed. The main objective of this study is to show how the metallurgical response of different types of ore blends can be simulated using kinetic models derived from experimental flotation tests with different geometallurgical end-member ore types and their blends. For these validation tests, four different end-member ore types containing different ratios of chalcopyrite, chalcocite and oxidised copper minerals from Rich Metal Group’s Madneuli copper-gold mine, Georgia, were tested. Kinetic flotation tests, including both rougher and cleaner flotation tests, were carried out. The simulations were performed using HSC Chemistry software based on mineral compositions of the ores and kinetic models using rectangular distribution equations and flowsheet model. Simulated and experimental results of copper grade, copper recovery and concentrate mass pull correlated well with R2 values of >0.95. Based on these results, the metallurgical response of different ore blends can be simulated based on the flotation kinetics of end-member ore types. The use of this kind of simulation will create savings during the test work phase and increase the flexibility and predictability in the processing stage. Mining production scheduling is the process of determining the sequence of block extraction over a period of time that will yield the maximum net present value for a mining operation. The block extraction sequence needs to occur under certain resource constraints which presents an NP-hard problem that is computationally intractable and complex to solve for large scale problems using exact mathematical models such as Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP). In this paper, we used a metaheuristic optimisation model based on a Genetic Algorithm (GA) to solve the production scheduling problem. The problem definition and resource constraints are formulated using a mining specific GA that enforces block extraction precedence and mining capacity constraints through a normalisation method. A case study is implemented with the GA model, and the results and computational time are compared with that of a MILP model with CPLEX solver which is based on a branch-and-cut algorithm.

The South African mining industry plays a significant role in the economy of the country. Nonetheless, the negative impacts on the environment continue to prevail. In regions where mining exists in proximity to communities, mining activities have led to the disruption of modality. Rural communities are mostly affected as they depend on land use for agriculture to sustain their livelihoods. The conversion of land for mining activities often leaves the communities vulnerable when mines close because of the limited life span of mines. An ongoing discourse focuses on how the mining industry can contribute to sustainable development of the communities in which they operate. Post-mining transformation offers an approach for the mining companies to contribute to sustainable livelihoods post-mine closure by strengthening rural-urban linkages, which ensures inclusive development of both rural and urban areas. The paper employs a case study approach to Richards Bay Minerals and the adjacent rural communities of Sokhulu and Mbonambi. It sets out to understand the post-mining transformation employed by RBM and explore the rural-urban linkages that manifest as a result. Findings show that sand dune rehabilitation employed by RBM is successful in restoring soil fertility and establishing the natural ecosystem. The casuarina planted to rehabilitate the dunes is used to spur an alternative charcoal industry post-closure. The main rural-urban linkages that manifest are flows of people due to job opportunities and flows of goods from the sale of charcoal produced. However, there is a lack of communication and lack of authority to ensure responsible management of the casuarina plantation and equitable sharing of benefits. The paper recommends that other post-mining transformation strategies such as eco-tourism should be explored and that the government, at both national and local level, the community and the mine should be involved to ensure overall success and sustainability of the strategy. To reduce the frequency of mining incidents and improve safety and production efficiency, it is important to develop technology for the autonomous positioning and navigation of mining equipment, without the assistance of satellite navigation signals. In this study we review the current technological environment for positioning and navigation underground and present several integrated navigation strategies. Existing underground positioning and navigation technology is described, and the performances of different methods based on this technology analysed and compared. The combination types and positioning effects of underground positioning and navigation strategies are discussed. Recent research directions for filtering methods and positioning estimation algorithms for underground positioning and navigation are reviewed. Finally, we summarize the future direction of underground positioning and navigation technology and related algorithms.

In April of 2013 a 48 MVA submerged arc furnace producing silicomanganese was excavated in South Africa. One of the areas excavated systematically was the furnace taphole. The aim was to obtain a refractory wear profile of the tap-hole area, together with affected hearth and sidewall refractory. Subsequently, thermodynamic modelling was applied to quantify the potential for chemical reaction between refractory and slag and refractory and metal in the tap-hole area.

JournelIn his presentation Mr Wiik said that unrolling could be regarded as a reversal of the natural process of folding, so that the aim of an unrolling procedure would be the reconstruction of original pre-tectonic conditions. While simply formulated, this aim might not always be achieved. The geometrical relationship between points on the deformed surface and corresponding points on the original surface is process-dependent, and a true reconstruction could be achieved only if the deformation history were known in detail.In this computer unrolling procedure all these complexities were ignored. Referring to one particular marker horizon, Mr Wiik said that it was assumed in the procedure that this marker was deposited as a horizontal stratum and that it had subsequently been deformed by simple flexure-type folding.The procedure allowed the geologist to incorporate his knowledge and conception of the deposit through repeated re-contouring with dummy points. This 'manumatic' aspect of the procedure had proved invaluable, not only in resolving specific unrolling problems but also in making the system more acceptable to the geologists in general.Unrolling served towards removing what might be termed `tectonic noise' superimposed on the primary distribution patterns for regionalized variables such as metal content and orebody thickness. From this point of view, variograms derived on the basis of unrolled-plan co-ordinates should be more meaningful in terms of depositional environment than are variograms calculated from a normal map projection.Mr M. M. Oosterveld remarked that it appeared from the paper that there were problems in applying the unrolling technique to ore reserve calculation, and asked whether there were not other methods that might be used for that purpose.Mr Wiik replied that at present unrolling played only a minor role in practical ore reserve estimation within Roan Consolidated Mines, Limited. The techniques currently in use differed from one orebody to another, but in general they involved projection onto a vertical longitudinal section or a horizontal plan, with subsequent grid interpolation by means of a standard computer contouring package."

Surface coal operations in which mining activities are conducted above old underground workings experience hot holes after drilling. In a coal mine, hot holes are defined as shot holes, which after being drilled have an in-hole ambient temperature of 40°C or above or show a temperature increase of 3°C or more during monitoring. Hot holes and other cavities, such as cracks, pose health and safety risks to workers, such as exposure to hot air and high concentrations of noxious gases released from these holes. In addition, workers may be exposed to premature detonation of explosives caused by in-hole temperature increases and chemical reactions. To this end, Coaltech Research Association commissioned a project to develop a Best Practice Guideline for the management of hot holes. This paper is a compilation of the activities conducted in the development of the Best Practice Guideline between 2021 and 2022. The activities included a review of standard operating procedures and hot-hole temperature-measuring and -monitoring devices, and the assessment of current hot-hole procedures at selected mines. The results indicated that management of hot holes requires a focus on pre-emptive risk assessment of mining blocks, identification of hot holes using the correct temperature-measuring devices, and continuous monitoring of hot holes from the time of drilling until just before blasting. Hot-hole management accessories, such as polyvinyl chloride sleeves, were found to be effective in insulating the hot-hole emulsion from the rock mass temperature, thus preventing the potential for premature detonation.
