"Characterization of the size, shape, chemical composition, and mineralogical content of mine airborne dusts generally requires a larger mass of dust particles than is typically collected using traditional sampling devices. In this paper, the general design of a passive dust collector is described and the field results are presented. The collector was constructed of galvanized sheet metal duct with a resin-coated honeycomb to provide an elutriation-type system for particle collection. Several versions of the collector were used in the field portions of the research.The dust samples collected from underground coal mines were found to possess angular particle shapes, relatively consistent size distributions, and elemental compositions that showed relatively little variation, at least for the more prevalent elements. In addition, the distributions of particles sizes obtained from the passive dust collector appear to be similar to those of samples collected at the same time in a conventional personal sampler except that the passive device seems to collect a larger quantity of coarse, nonrespirable particles. Conclusions on the suitability of this dust collector for collecting characterization samples are presented. In addition, the potential for using such a dust collection system for supplying dusts for biomedical research is discussed.INTRODUCTIONRecently, a considerable amount of research effort has been directed toward better understanding of the characteristics of the coal dust generated during the mining process. It is generally believed that dust characteristics play a significant role in the development of Coal Workers' Pneumoconiosis (CWP). In order to effectively protect coal workers from coal dust, it is important to understand the properties of dust, the mechanisms of generation and dust-lung reaction. Conducting research on dust characterization, dust control and the biomedical aspects of dust toxicology generally requires a large sample of airborne coal dust. Unfortunately, current dust sampling instruments are not able to meet this demand because only a few milligrams of dust are collected."

Determine the extent to which remote-sensing techniques, primarily lineament analysis, can be used to identify geologic structures that may affect the location and migration of subsidence over abandoned underground coal mines in the Colorado Springs, CO, area. Compile data using a geographic information system (GIS) to allow efficient and reproducible comparisons and analyses. Background The basis for evaluating abandoned mine land (AML) sites with remote-sensing techniques comes from past and ongoing Bureau ground control research using remote-sensing data to identify potential hazards caused by geologic structures (faults, joints, etc.) above active underground coal mines. Research showed that lineament (linear feature) analysis of Landsat Multispectral Scanner (MSS) images could indicate locations of fractures and fracture trends that had varying, but significant, impacts on the stability of mine openings. Such geologic structures should be identifiable over abandoned mines as well. If fractures are present, even if they arc not faults, they should represent areas of potential instability over these mines and, therefore, should tend to localize subsidence when it occurs, particularly for deep and moderately deep portions of mines.

Many miners are involved in tasks at the mine site that are similar to those sub-tasks performed in general construction, maintenance and repair (CMR) type work activities. As a result, many of the injuries in the mining industry today can be traced to employees performing these CMR type work activities. Indeed, a recent analysis of a major aggregate company revealed that 65% of all injuries documented originated from performing such CMR activities. It is hypothesized that the number of injuries to miners performing construction, maintenance and repair (CMR) work activities on mine property may be reduced through improved training that focuses on better hazard recognition using the numerous visual and other cues that are available for evaluating workplace health and safety hazards. To this end, researchers at NIOSH’s Pittsburgh Research Laboratory have merged two proven methods of training miners to recognize hazards, stereoscopic (3-D) slides and the concept of degraded images, into this training program. Stereoscopic (3-D) slides have been shown in earlier NIOSH and U.S. Bureau of Mines research to be an effective training aid for improving the ability of miners to recognize various geologic and mining-induced irregularities that can cause groundfalls.3 They realistically portray the natural mine environment, and thus are an excellent training aid for teaching miners to recognize such visual cues. The degraded image concept, originally developed by the military and used for target detection training, describes scenes where the target is partially hidden by cloud cover, dust, rain, natural barriers, buildings, or other obstructions that can camouflage or confuse the target. Research had shown that flight observers who were trained with less than ideal (or degraded) pictures were more successful in subsequent identification of targets than those trained using ideal (or highlighted) pictures of targets. In order to investigate this concept for training miners to recognize hazards, NIOSH researchers developed a prototype hazard recognition training program using such mining scenes. A control program based on traditional highlighted mining scenes was also developed. Both programs were applied to subjects in a field experiment. Results indicated that miners trained with the degraded images did significantly better on a follow-up test of hazard recognition.4 This hazard recognition program teaches trainees to look for hazards in a more realistic manner than that of the control program. This specific training program for CMR activities involves using the degraded image concept and 3-D slides. The module is designed to educate workers on hazard identification techniques and safe work practices. It focuses on teaching miners techniques for recognizing visual (sight) cues, and then uses these cues to evaluate mining conditions. It should be stressed that other senses, such as sound can also play an important role in hazard detection.

Studies were made to determine the effect of the shape of a pneumaticrock- drill exhaust muffler on its efficiency, and the origin and reduction of exit noise from the mufflers. Tests of mufflers of three different shapes proved that the shape is not critical and that a muffler could be incorporated into the shell of the drill. Petal diffusers are beneficial in reducing exit noise but add another projection to the machine. Increasing the number of exit openings while maintaining the same area of exit opening has a markedly beneficial effect on the exit noise and appears to be the most satisfactory treatment.

Develop a simple and economical technique for determining the absolute stresses and the change of stress on the surface of roofs, floors, or walls in miners. Approach Use a commercially-available, permissible, Whittemore-type gage to determine the stress at the surface of a mine opening and to monitor any stress changes that might take place. Coal degasification boreholes drilled from the surface have been success - fully hydraulically stimulated to increase the flow of gas from the coal. This Bureau of Mines report describes the hydraulic stimulation procedure for a coalbed, the equipment required, and design criteria for the treatment. Three examples of stimulation treatment show from fivefold to twentyfold increases in gas production. The tests were conducted in the Pocahontas No. 3coalbed, Buchanan County, Va., the Pittsburgh coalbed, Washington County, Pa., and the Mary Lee coalbed, Jefferson County, Ala. Two sites where the coal was hydraulically stimulated and exposed by subsequent mining show no adverse effect on mining operations through the treated zones. The induced vertical partings were confined to the coalbed and did not in any way affect either roof or floor rock.

Diamond-bit performance and cost data accumulated by the Bureau of Mines in core-drilling schists reveal significant trends of economic interest. Low-quality, small-size drill bort were the most economical. The percentage of core recovery, type and size of bit, and bit matrix are also correlated with bit performance and costs. "Under existing conditions in the treatment of oxidized lead ores containing small quantities of molybdenum no provision is made for the recovery of the molybdenum. Considerable quantities of this important element are lost in the slags of the lead smelters and constitute an economic waste. There is little or no probability that slag dumps containing molybdenum in small quantities could be economically treated for the recovery of the element, and steps for the prevention of waste in this respect must be taken prior to smelter treatment.Wulfenite, lead molybdate (PbMo04), and molybdite, molybdic ocher (Mo03), are the molybdenum minerals most abundantly found in deposits of oxidized lead ores. Wulfenite contains 39.3 per cent molybdenum trioxide and 60.7 per cent lead oxide; molybdite contains 66.7 per cent molybdenum and 33.3 per cent oxygen. Plumbojarosite, argentojarosite, cerussite, and occasionally anglesite are commonly associated with wulfenite ores, and the oxidized iron content is usually fairly high.The recent discovery and development of a body of wulfenite ore in the Star district near Milford led to a cursory microscopic examination of samples of the ore, followed by a few preliminary tests which had for their object the separation and recovery of the lead and molybdenum in separate products.The microscopic examination showed that the samples used in the work were composed of wulfenite, plumbojarosite, and a small quantity of cerussite, and indicated that the iron content was quite high. The ore was porous and yellowish-brown; crystals of wulfenite appeared to be quite uniformly distributed through it, and this mineral and plumbojarosite (Pb0.3Fe203.4S03.6H20) apparently accounted for the major part of the lead content, although lead"

It would permit coal mines to operate continuously instead of intermittently . Intermittent operation increases the cost per ton for mining , and makes the yearly return to labor low . These conditions contribute to serious instability and unrest in one of the fundamental industries of the country and this can be changed only by coal buyers doing their part to insure steady work . The railroads are now required to transport the maximum amount of coal during the winter months when traffic is most interfered with by bad weather and when the maximum amount of coal is used by the railroads to handle other coal . The railroads now use nearly 30 per cent of the total output of coal . About one- third of their freight traffic is hauling coal , so that economy of fuel used by the railroads will produce a considerable gross saving .

To identify the most successful methods now in use for controlling respirable dust in longwall mines using double-drum shearers. Approach Conduct dust surveys at six longwall mining sections that use double-drum shearers and are regularly in compliance with the Federal Respirable Dust Standard, to identify effective dust control techniques. The selection of mine sites was based on recommendations provided by the Mine Safety and Health Administration. Instantaneous and short-term gravimetric instrumentation make it possible to isolate longwall dust sources and to determine the effectiveness of dust control techniques. (These procedures were developed by the Bureau of Mines, and are described in detail in Technology News Bulletins 134 and 135.) Production levels, and seam heights at each of the six longwall sections were: 53", 700 tps; 60", 800 tps; 72", 1000 tps; 79", 1500 tps; 84", 2000 tps; 96", 1500 tps. Survey Results Three effective dust control techniques were identified. 1. Shearer Operators on Intake Side of Lead Drum-At all mines surveyed, an important factor in controlling dust exposures at the shearer is the use of a cut ting sequence that allows the shearer operators to work most of the time on the intake air side of the lead drum. The heats of the glass-crystal transformation of nepheline (Na0.7794K0.2206AlSiO4) and wollastonite (CaSiO3) and the heat of formation of nepheline at 298.15° K were determined by solution calorimetry. For the glass-crystal transformations, the heat values were -9.0 ± 0.3 kcal/mole for nepheline and -8.1 ± 0.2 kcal/mole for wollastonite. The heat of formation of nepheline was -34.8 ± 0.6 kcal/mole from the oxides and -501.0 ± 0.5 kcal/mole from the elements.

A construction material based on plasticized sulfur and mineral aggregate, that is superior in corrosion resistance and strength to portland cement concrete. The material can be used in the chemical, metallurgical, and fertilizer industries, and will also provide an attractive market for by-product sulfur resulting from compliance with pollution regulations. How It Is Made Sulfur concrete is thermoplastic material. Plasticized sulfur is mixed with sand and gravel aggregate heated to 375-400° F. The sulfur melts and acts as the binder or cement. The sulfur concrete is poured hot and sets at a temperature of 200° F. Full strength is attained in a few hours, compared to several days for portland cement concretes. Sulfur concrete even pours and sets in freezing weather. Although unmodified sulfur with aggregate will produce a sulfur concrete with good initial properties, it undergoes crystallographic modifications, and deteriorates with time, particularly when exposed to moisture or freeze-thaw conditions. The Bureau of Mines has developed plasticizers which, when reacted with the sulfur, give sulfur concretes with excellent moisture and freeze-thaw resistance. The plasticizers are based on mixtures of dicyclopentadlene (DCPD) and ollgomers of cyclopentadiene. About 5 percent by weight of the plasticizers is reacted with molten sui fur for several hours. The sulfur cement can be used directly or allowed to solidify for easier handling and storage.

The U.S. Department of Labor?s Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA),through its winter alert program, warns U.S. mine operators and miners at underground coal mines of workplace hazards that can arise when the weather turns colder. MSHA records indicate that, historically, most explosions in underground coal mines occur during winter months. ?The changes in weather can increase the risk of fatal accidents,? says David G. Dye, Acting Assistant Secretary of Labor for Mine Safety and Health. ?Each miner and mine operator must take individual responsibility to eliminate the kinds of hazards that can cause fatal accidents in the workplace. Safety is not the other guy?s job?safety begins with you.? In fact, MSHA?s slogan for this year?s campaign is ?Winter Alert Starts Now and Safety Begins with YOU.? This message reminds miners and mine operators of the risks of colder weather and educates them about helping to reduce risks and hazards. ?Safety requires the joint effort of both management and labor,? Dye says. ?Everyone at the mine site must see safety as an individual value and act to ensure a safe working environment.?

The Bureau of Mines has developed procedures for sampling the geometry of fractures in underground coal mines. Stratified cluster sampling and the unit area concept are applied to the collection of fracture orientation data. The use of unit area mapping, stratification, and site delineation is made to assure collection of representative data. The procedures developed here help to isolate sources of variability in the fracture patterns.

A skull breaker has demonstrated its advantages for secondary breaking in a limestone quarry by entirely displacing secondary blasting . It has reduced safety hazards to workmen, increased the number of quarry operating days , and has lowered mining costs by 2.7 cents a ton. It is believed that the application of the skull breaker can be made economically advantageous in the surface mining of other commoditics .

A knowledge of its history and method of preparation is, therefore, of interest to many. "Electron spin resonance (ESR) measurements show that grinding of quartz particles in air produces silicon-based (Si- and SiO-) radicals which decay with aging in air. ESR spin trapping measurements provide evidence for the generation of hydroxyl and possibly superoxide radicals from a suspension of fresh quartz particles. The hydroxyl radical generation potential of the fresh quartz particles decreases on storing in ambient air and on the addition of catalase, superoxide dismutase, desferoxamine, or DMSO. Silica-induced lipid peroxidation also decreases on storing the fresh particles in ambient air. These findings suggest that oxygenated radicals play a role in the biochemical mechanism of pneumoconiosis in general and acute silicosis in particular.INTRODUCTIONThis communication summarizes our electron spin resonance (ESR) investigation of the formation of oxygenated radicals by freshly crushed quartz particles in a cell-free aqueous medium, and its potential role in the biochemical mechanism of acute silicosis. This study was undertaken because the mechanisms by which the quartz particles exert their toxic action on cells and the process(es) by which these actions progress to fibrogenesis are still not well understood. 1-3 It is generally believed, however, that the action of quartz particles on the cell membrane is the starting point of the silicotic process. 1,4 Since the first step must involve surface reactions, characterization of the chemical structure of the surface of quartz particles has been the subject of several recent studies!-' For example, we reported that mechanical crushing of quartz under normal atmosphere generates silicon-based (Si• and SiO•) radicals which decay with time, and that these radicals are associated with a higher cytotoxicity of fresh quartz dust as compared to that of an aged dust from the same stock. 6,8 Independently Fubini and coworkers' have also reported on the formation of Si• and SiO• -type of radicals from quartz particles crushed under atmospheric conditions. Gulumian and van Wyk9 have reported that quartz particles react with hydrogen peroxide (H202) to generate hydroxyl (•OH) radicals. These authors9 suggested that this process might contribute to quartz's pathogenicity but the mechanism of the -OH radical formation was not clarified. Earlier, Gabor and Anca10 had suggested that the cytotoxicity of quartz particles might be associated with the generation of some factor or factors possessing the properties of a free radical and hence capable of promoting the peroxidative chain cleavage of polyunsaturated fatty acid moieties of the phospholipids in the cell membrane. More recently, Weitzman and Graceffa 11 reported that asbestos is able to catalyze the generation of -OH radicals from H2O2. Their later work12 indicated that lipid peroxidation might be one of the mechanisms of tissue injury by asbestos."

This trainer?s guide is designed as a reference manual. The purpose is to offer information and examples to skills trainers to assist them in structuring training for new operators of Walk-Thru roof bolting machines. Trainers can use this manual as a resource for helping trainees learn, understand, and apply knowledge and skills. In this sense, the guide is not prescriptive. It is designed to offer information and trigger ideas on what might be done to accelerate learning to those who are new to the roof-bolting task. On-site trainers can modify this guide to fit their conditions, machines and equipment, and work procedures. They can integrate roof control plans, company policies and procedures, and operators? manuals from the manufacturers of the original equipment into this guide. Every trainee is different and will come to the job with varying levels of relevant knowledge and skills. The trainer?s decisions on where to start, how to organize the on-the-job and classroom training portions, and when and how to offer different aspects of the training will be based on (1) a pretraining assessment of the trainee?s knowledge and skills and (2) the trainer?s experience in conducting skills training. The ?Skill Check? section might be useful for deciding where training should start among miners who have underground experience but limited knowledge of roof-bolting techniques. Every job carries a learning curve and likely has a number of ?teachable moments? where significantly new knowledge and skills can be learned.

In laboratory tests using reconstructed soil columns, rubber latex showed good sealing efficiency when applied at a rate equivalent to 4000-5000 pounds per acre. Results of field testing, however, were inconclusive. The ideal situation in which latex would coagulate in a narrow zone two to three feet below the surface by reacting with acidic or metallic constituents of the soil was not attained. Rather, the latex was deposited progressively as it passed through the soil (most of it remained in the top foot), the rate of deposition being dependent on soil structure and composition as well as on properties of the latex such as particle size and emulsion stability. Latex stability appears to be a more critical property than latex particle size in controlling penetration. Addition of excess anionic or nonionic surfactants to latex improved its penetration into the soil. A styrene-butadiene (SBR) rubber latex of 2400 Å average particle size with high mechanical stability gave the best balance of penetrating ability and sealing capacity in laboratory tests and this was confirmed in tests on a 5 x 5 foot test plot at Lanse, Pennsylvania. This latex was subsequently applied to three one-quarter-acre plots at Lanse by sprinkler irrigation, and compared to adjacent areas that were sprinkled with water only. Soil moisture measurements did not enable us to judge the effectiveness of the seal because differences between sampling positions were greater than differences between treated and untreated sections, but permeability tests showed that water flow was much slower (90-99% reduction) within the top ten inches of soil in the latex- treated sections. This sealing effectiveness was reduced after wintering. There was no deleterious effect on the vegetation as a result of sprinkling the areas with latex. A laboratory study conducted in a 5 x 5 x 5 foot box containing uniform reconstructed soil from a New Jersey source suggests that latex penetration into the soil in the field occurs mainly through natural macro openings and not through the capillaries of the soil structure. Dilute solutions of ammonium hydroxide or sodium carbonate (with no latex present) were found to seal effectively in laboratory soil columns as well as in field applications. However, since these chemicals are water soluble, the seal is temporary. Raw material costs of latex at the application rates used in the field testing are in the order of $1000 per acre. Since 1988, there have been thirteen documented incidents in the United States and Canada in which carbon monoxide (CO) is suspected to have migrated through near surface strata into structures or other enclosed spaces as a result of nearby trench blasting or surface mine blasting. From these incidents, there are thirty suspected or medically verified CO poisonings and one fatality associated with these incidents. To better understand the variables contributing to this hazard, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) carried out a small-scale field study to identify key factors that may contribute to the migration of CO through the ground. NIOSH conducted single-hole heavily confined experimental test shots to measure the radial pressure pulse as it propagated through surrounding monitoring holes to determine if a relationship existed between the pressure pulse and resulting CO measurements afterwards. NIOSH also monitored blasts at an airport construction site. Following the detonations, the concentrations of CO, nitric oxide (NO), and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) were monitored for several days in the surrounding satellite holes. The peak CO measurements relative to distances from the shots were compared. Pressure histories and peak particle velocities (PPV) were measured at monitoring boreholes. It was found that the differential pressures recorded within the boreholes give some indication as to the likelihood of CO appearing, whereas the PPV measurements do not seem to be as good an indicator for potential CO migration. In this limited study, changes in barometric pressure had very little influence on removing the trapped detonation products, whereas applying a vacuum to the monitoring holes was effective in reducing the entrapped CO concentration.
