"INTRODUCTION The increased use of coal as pulverized fuel has focused attention on the grindability of coal and on the necessity of evaluating this property by a method suitable for use in the usual coal-testing laboratory. Without some knowledge of how various coals behave in the grinding operation, that is, how their use affects mill capacity and power requirements, the selection of coals for pulverized-fuel plants cannot be made on the same critical basis used in selecting coals for other types of burning equipment. The grindability of a coal, serves principally as an indication of the mill capacity attainable in grinding it - not as a direct index of the total cost of grinding. Although the grindability of coal may play a minor role at some plants, it is a decidedly important factor where pulverizer capacity limits the ability to carry high loads.Purpose Standardized tests for determining the grindability of coal are relatively new, so that the information now available on the grindability of various coals is limited in comparison, for example, with that available on proximate analyses. Published information is restricted to determinations on many important Eastern coals by the Fuel Engineering Co. of New York, 4/ a bulletin giving the results of numerous tests by the Babcock and Wilcox Co. 5/, and a comprehensive report on. Alabama coals by the Bureau of Mines. 6/This report presents the results of grindability tests of 34 samples of coals from Illinois, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Utah, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, and British Columbia at the Northwest Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines, Seattle, Wash., in cooperation with the College of Mines of the University of Washington. In the future, as the laboratories of the Bureau make grindalility tests of other coals, additional reports will be issued."

Massive roof overlying the working seam in longwall operations can cause hazards if it does not cave readily behind the face supports. The overhang thus formed can overload the supports and endanger personnel when it collapses suddenly as a large rock mass. This Bureau of Mines report proposes the use of a concentrated load, either strip or point loading, applied onto the roof with the help of the upward thrust of the face supports. An experiment was conducted in the laboratory to obtain information about break characteristics and the values of significant parameters of three sedimentary rocks. The results were used to determine the breaking load requirement for a strong roof possibly encountered in typical longwall operations. The results show that the roof slab of moderate thickness can be fractured within the load capacity of off-the-shelf powered supports.

On January 1, 1960 there were 310 petroleum refineries in the United States, with a crude-oil capacity of 9,901,424 barrels daily, according to the Bureau of Mines' annual survey. Compared with a year ago, this represents a net decrease of three in the number of refineries and an increase of 81,578, barrels per day in crude-oil throughput capacity. Continuing the trend to fewer units with greater individual throughput, the capacity of the average refinery in the United states increased during 1959 from 31,373 barrels per day to 31,740 barrels per day. Compared with the previous year, total crude-oil capacity of refineries on January 1, 1960 was lower in the Appalachian No. 1, Other Rocky Mountain, and Texas Gulf refinery districts. All other districts showed slight increases in capacity. At the beginning of 1960 the industry had under construction facilities that would increase the crude-oil capacity in the United States by 70,947 barrels per day. This was the smallest capacity increase under construction at the beginning of the year since 19460 Included in this construction of additional capacity were two new refineries, one in Michigan and another in Hawaii. In addition, the industry was constructing facilities to replace 50,250 barrels per day of existing crude-oil capacity.

This report presents a U.S. Bureau of Mines study that incorporates coal mining factors, coal recovery factors, and economic factors into the definition of an economically recoverable coal resource. The relationship between these factors to the Energy Information Administration's estimate of U.S. coal resources-the "Demonstrated Reserve Base"-is discussed. The Matewan 7-1/2 minute quadrangle in eastern Kentucky was selected as the initial study area. Results indicate that of the original 1,193 million tons of resource in the quadrangle, only 89 million tons (7.5%) are economically recoverable at a cost of $25 per ton or less. At the current production rate of 5.3 million tons per year, this represents only 16.8 years of remaining reserves.

Thermodynamic data for the hydrated varieties of alumina are sparse, and those for the common clay minerals are virtually nil. This paper partly fills the vacuum by reporting low-temperature heat-capacity measurements and entropy evaluations of diaspore (A10(OH)) and three clay minerals of the composition A12Si207?2H20 - kaolinite, dickite, and halloysite. The heat-capacity measurements were made in the temperature range 510 to 298.15° K., and the entropies were evaluated at 298.15° K. Diaspore has an unusually low heat capacity and entropy compared with boehmite (another mineral of the same chemical composition). The entropies of the three clay minerals differ too little for entropy to be the important factor relating to differences in the thermal stability of these substances.

Mechanical cleaning of bituminous coal in the United States was begun about 1875, with plants in western Pennsylvania and Illinois. The United States Geological Survey began to record the quantity of washed bituminous coal in 1906; and the series was carried forward to 1923, except that no data were collected, for 1922. This statistical work was transferred to the Bureau of Mines in 1925, and the collection of data on mechanical cleaning was resumed in 1927. Data collected before 1927 include only the coal that was washed at the mines and do not include that cleaned by pneumatic methods at the mines and that cleaned at central washeries operated by consumers.2/ The total bituminous coal washed in 1906 was less than 10 million net tons. In 1927, the first year for which complete figures are available for all types of mechanical cleaning, 28 million net tons of bituminous coal were cleaned in the United States.

Research workers from the Bureau of Mines and industry met with other government and industry representatives at the Mont Chateau Lodge, Morgantown, W. Va., on May 30-31, 1973, to discuss the current status of methane control in eastern U.S. coal mines. The opening remarks, the eight technical presentations, and the discussions of the members of a government-industry panel are published here for the benefit of those concerned with the control of methane in coal mines. In addition, an introduction has been added to present the background of work in this field.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated a hydrothermal sulfidation (HTS) and chloride leaching procedure to recover lead and silver from plumbojarosite. The plumbojarosite, generated during pressure-oxidative leaching of zinc concentrate in a commercial operation, contained, in percent, 25.4 Pb, 18.8 Fe, 1.4 Zn, 29.5 sulfate (S042.), 3.2 elemental sulfur (SO), 13.4 total S, and 7.4 tr oz/st Ag. The HTS was conducted in an autoclave and converted the plumbojarosite into amorphous iron oxide and liberated the Pb and Ag as sulfides (S2) The best operating conditions were 50 g of plumbojarosite and 7 pct So (2.04 g So added) in 500 mL of 2.0-mol/L NH3 at 150° C for 1 h. The sulfidation product contained, in percent, 37 Pb, 28 Fe, 2 S042., 7 total S, and 11.2 tr oz/st Ag. Flotation of the sulfidation product was conducted at pH 3 with 15-pct pulp density and 2.4lb/st of isopropyl xanthate as collector. The flotation concentrate contained 43 pct Pb, 25 pct Fe, and 13 tr oz/st Ag. FeCl3 leaching of the sulfidation product in a resin kettle extracted 98 pct Pb and 97 pct Ag from the sulfidation product, and HCI-Oz leaching in a shaker glass bottle extracted 99 pct Pb and 98 pct Ag. Both leach residues met the Environmental Protection Agency's Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (EPA-TCLP) standards for nonhazardous wastes. The HTS and chloride leaching procedure is a potentially effective method for detoxification of plumbojarosite-bearing residue from the zinc pressure-leaching circuit.

The systems MgO-MgFa-SiO2, at 2 and 4 weight-percent Li2O and at 3.8 and 7.7 weight-percent Na2O were investigated by solid state reaction at 1,200° C. The results are summarized in four ternary diagrams. Besides the expected humites and simpler silicates or fluorides, proto-amphibole and water-swelling fluormicas or fluormontmorillonoids were found in the systems containing lithium and monoclinic fluoramphiboles, water-swelling fluormicas or fluormont-morillonoids, and nonwater-swelling fluormicas were found in the systems containing sodium. These latter compounds were not in the base system MgO-MgF2-SiO2.

This summary appears in Minerals Year-book volumes I-II, and III, which cover mineral production in the United States, its island possessions, the Canal Zone, and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, as well as the principal minerals imported into and exported from the United States. The sections of this chapter and the area chapters in volume III contain further details on production. A summary table comparing world and U.S. mineral production also is included. Mineral production may be measured at any of several stages of extraction and processing. The stage of measurement used in the chapter is normally what is termed "mine output." It usually refers to minerals in the form in which they are first extracted from the ground, but customarily includes for some minerals the product of auxiliary processing operations at or near mines.

The Bureau of Mines has evaluated four working-level radiation-measurement methods and optimized them from the inherent and statistical error standpoint. Optimization with respect to various sampling and measurement times yielded no marked improvement over the existing methods. However, when appropriate approximations are made and evaluated, these two-measurement methods can be reduced to simple formulas, eliminating a need to use nomograms. These modified methods also have improved inherent error characteristics. A new method--a combination of two existing methods--with improved inherent and statistical errors has been suggested. All the pertinent equations are given, together with the computer program, so that any two-measurement method can be readily evaluated.

Of the 19 major mine fire events (including thermal events) that have occurred in the last 6 years (2000-2005), it is estimated that remotely constructed mine seals could have been used at 65% of the events to control or suppress the fire. Underground observations of seals that have been remotely installed during mine fire events show that they often do not fully achieve mine roof-to-floor and rib-to-rib closure. Unfortunately, the inability to reliably close the mine void has limited or precluded the regular use of this technology. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health is conducting full-scale underground experiments at the Lake Lynn Experimental Mine to identify and remedy existing remote sealing technology shortcomings, to develop novel technologies, and to transfer the new or improved technologies to the mining industry. This paper will discuss the remote mine seal testing program and will provide the results of the in-mine experiments. The Bureau of Mines is in the process of degasifying a virgin area in northern West Virginia from the base of an 839-foot -deep vertical borehole. An in situ gas pressure hole 199 feet long, and seven degasification holes ranging in depth from 500 to 850 feet (average 618 feet) were drilled in an 8-foot-thick virgin Pittsburgh coalbed from the enlarged (14-foot-diameter) bottom of this borehole. The in situ pressure at the back end of the hole and the range of gas and water flows from degasification holes as they were completed and closed off were 203 psi, 79,000 to 257,000 cfd (average 160,000 cfd), and 5 to 8 gpm per hole (average 6.8 gpm), respectively. Twenty-four hours after the seven holes were connected through individual water traps to a common collector for natural venting of the gas through pipes to the atmosphere, the total gas and water flows and the in situ pressure dropped, respectively, to 971,000 cfd, 1.3 gpm, and 18 psi. Eighty days later the corresponding values dropped to 529,000 cfd, 0.50 gpm, and 13 psi. After 180 days of degasification, 91 million cubic feet of gas had been removed from the affected virgin area. This represents 60 to 70 percent of the gas calculated to be contained in the area of coal affected by the holes.

Accelerometers of various types, velocity gages, and a displacement meter are shown to give reliable date when measuring seismic pulses generated in rock by the detonation of explosive charges. Displacement and velocity records are differentiated and shown to compare with velocity and acceleration records. Velocity and acceleration records are integrated and shown to compare with displacement and velocity records, respectively. The experimental data are shown to satisfy the scaling laws developed by dimensional analysis. Propagation laws are developed for peak amplitudes of the first pulse of displacement, velocity, and acceleration. These propagation laws are shown to be independent of the gage used to obtain the data. As a result, the usefulness of the various gage types can be extended. For example, accelerometers, because of their high frequency and amplitude limits, can be employed near the shot to measure acceleration and/or velocity (by integration), Velocity gages, because of their higher sensitivity, can be employed at relatively larger distances from the shot to measure velocity and displacement or acceleration (by integration or differentiation).

An instrumentation and numeric modeling study was conducted by the Bureau of Mines at the Magmont Mine in Bixby, MO. An isolated section of this room-and-pillar mine was monitored with borehole and closure extensometers during a pillar recovery program to determine stress redistribution. In situ stress measurements were taken in the rib before pillar extraction began. Sample cores from the boreholes were taken for analysis of the properties of the host rock in the laboratory. The extensometers recorded no measurable displacements during most of the operation. Two-dimensional, finite-element; three-dimensional, finite-element; and three-dimensional displace-ment discontinuity codes were used to model the area of study. The finite-element models were run with two initial stress conditions, i.e., stress due to gravity only and stress obtained by in situ measurements. Horizontal stresses in the models reduced the calculated factor-of-safety in the mine back by up to a factor of 10, but did not have a significant effect on calculated pillar stability.

The extremely sluggish oxidation of steel scrap was appreciably accelerated when the charge was pretreated in aqueous solutions of sodium metavanadate or sodium molybdate. The degree of oxidation acceleration was inversely correlated with the melting point of the promoter oxide possessing the highest valency. The magnitude of oxidation enhancement exhibited a systematic inverse dependence on the duration of pickling processes; mere dipping of the oxidizable charge in the vanadate bath was most effective. In general, the rate of steel scrap oxidation increased with increasing concentration of the pickling reagent. The results are explained on the basis of the hydrolytic decomposition of the pickling agent with subsequent slow interaction with the metal surface, coupled with the tendency of vanadium to form polyanions in alkaline media. The data not only served to elucidate the mechanism by which catastrophic oxidation takes place, but also showed that the accelerating species need not be alloyed with the oxidizable metal; surface impregnation by minute amounts of the accelerating species can still produce catastrophic effects.

Electrical conductivities and densities of molten fluoride systems were measured as functions of the melt temperature and composition. For any given mixture, the two properties change linearly with temperature. Three alkali metal fluorides were selected as solvents for melts of the type LiF-, NaF-, and KF-MFx, where M is a metal selected from the alkali metal or alkaline earth groups, or from the lanthanide or actinide series of elements, and x = 1-4. Heats of activation for conductance were calculated from the experimental data and varied from 2.3 to 9.2 kcal/mole at 1,000° C. Some relation between position in the phase diagram and the conductivity changes was suggested.

Major problems facing the development of coal and gas resources of the Hartshorne Coalbeds include the complex distribution of minable and unminable coal, high methane content and bed pressure, faulting, variations in degree of dip, presence of natural gas fields in associated sandstones, and legal problems, caused by local geologic characteris- tics, in identifying gas origin. This Bureau of Mines study provides pertinent geologic information for long-range planning of subsurface coal and gas production from the Hartshorne Coalbeds. Pittsburg, Coal, Hughes, and Atoka Counties, OK, have approximately 1 billion metric tons (1.1 billion short tons) of Hartshorne coal in place. The methane resource of Hartshorne Coalbeds is estimated at 9.2 billion m3 (325 billion ft3) and varies with overburden and rank, These estimates were compiled from gas well density logs, coal-core data, out- crop measurements, abandoned mine maps, and the literature. The Hartshorne Coalbeds represent a valuable coal and gas resource which at present is contributing nothing to coal and gas production. This report discusses potential problems and serves as a reference for future exploration and development work. Recognition of these potential geologically related problems prior to development of this basin will reduce hazards and allow for an economic recovery of these resources.

A joint investigation by the Bureau of Mines and the Christopher Coal Co. at the Humphrey No. 7 mine, operating in the Pittsburgh coalbed in northern West Virginia, was undertaken to gain more insight concerning the hazardous emission of methane gas in mining. This report describes the equipment, procedure, and results. Horizontal bleeder holes drilled in the faces drained large quantities of methane, eliminating downtime of mining equipment. Also, larger quantities of methane were removed by forcing 14 to 25 g,.p.m. water at 25 to 200 p.s.i. 5 pressure into the bleeder holes. In one infusion test a fluorescein dye was added to the infusion water; in later mining operations, the infusion water was traced for a distance of 1,500 feet. With vacuum pump applied to the horizontal hole the gas-flow rate increased, and the methane content decreased. Tests indicated that methane and water infused in bleeder holes traveled along the bedding planes of the Pittsburgh coalbed at a faster rate than across the planes. Methane associated with coalbeds is produced by the slow decomposition of carbonaceous material in the absence of air and the presence of water. It is lighter than air and, depending on its concentration, forms an inflammable or explosive mixture with air. It is believed that methane is entrapped in and around the pores of the coal and adjacent strata--often under great pressure. The Bureau of Mines conducted groove cutting experiments in marble, lime-stone, granite, and quartzite with a 7-inch disk cutter under a normal thrust of 7,000 lb. The values of muck weight per unit length, specific energy, cutting coefficient, and groove depth for each of these rocks were determined for groove spacings ranging from 0.1 to 4 inches, and from these results the values of optimum and critical spacing were computed" The results indicate that compressive strength may be used to predict some of the cutting characteristics of the independent grooves. Considering all the cutting characteristics, particularly those for the interacting grooves, Shore hardness, coefficient of rock strength, and torsional velocity correlate with cutting characteristics better than do other physical properties. Some of the field applications of the principles established in this report are identified.
