The densities of LiF, NaF, and KF, of binary mixtures of these alkali fluorides, and of binary mixtures of UF4, ThF4, YF3, LaF3, and CeF with each of tie alkali fluorides were measured as functions of the melt composition and temperature. Molar volumes at 1,000° C were calculated for all the mixtures. Binary systems containing LiF exhibited molar volume ideality. Binary fluoride systems containing either NaF or KF as the alkali fluoride exhibit positive deviations from molar volume additivity. However, molar volumes in the NaF-KF system are ideal.

The Bureau of Mines is currently conducting a comprehensive study to evaluate all aspects of recovering gold from large, low-grade deposits in the Golden Sunlight area, Whitehall mining district, Jefferson County, Mont. Prior to World War II this area produced significant quantities of gold. The study includes geologic mapping, diamond drilling, assaying, computer analysis of assay data, metallurgical research and ore testing, mine and mill planning, and an economic evaluation of all factors bearing on the establishment of a producing gold mine. Preliminary evaluation of the deposit indicates about 31 million tons of submarginal gold resources. American Exploration and Mining Co. (AMEX) has assisted the Bureau in this project by providing drill site preparation, control assays, and geological aid for the Bureau's exploration work and by furnishing comprehensive assay information of the property and copies of base and geologic maps. This report presents the geology and mining history of the area, together with a summary of Bureau work in progress.

The effects of impurity elements silicon , aluminum, copper , nitrogen , and manganese , at 50 to 300 ppm, on properties of the zirconium alloy Zircaloy 2 were investigated . Variations in microstructure , mechanical properties , and corrosion behavior in some inorganic acid and salt solutions were observed with variations in level of impurity element . Corrodents were solutions of sulfuric acid , phosphoric acid , copper chloride , and iron chloride . Silicon was found to modify annealed microstructures by spheroidizing and dispersion of secondphase material throughout grains . Silicon or manganese improved ultimate and yield strength of the alloy without loss in ductility . All five elements affected corrosion rates of the alloy , the effect being generally different for each element .

The following information on accidents in Alabama during 1930 was compiled from data obtained from the companies represented in a course on accident prevention given by the United States Bureau of Mines in Birmingham. These mines produced nearly three-quarters of the tonnage of that State for the year, and included most of the larger operations in the district. The figures are probably representative of the mines which are doing recognized safety work, and are better than the average for all the mines in Alabama. Table 1 lists the days lost in accordance with the weights given to fatalities and permanent disabilities, part and total, which is the scale used in the National Safety Com¬ petition for Mines, conducted by this bureau. By way of explanation, temporary disabilities are weighted according to actual number of calendar days of disability, including Sundays and holidays — that is, all days are counted except the day of accident and day of employee's ability to return to duty. Hernia is classed as a temporary disability to be charged with the actual number of calendar days during which the employee was unable to work. Table 2 gives the number of accidents and the days lost from each cause at 45 coal mines and 7 iron ore mines, also the average frequency and severity rates.

The United States has never attained importance as a producer of asbestos, the domestic output being only 1 to 3 percent of the quantity required to supply raw material for its extensive asbestos-product manu- facturing industries. Production is centered in four principal countries-- Canada, Rhodesia, Union of South Africa, and the Soviet Union. Since asbestos first became an important commercial commodity the Province of Quebec, Canada, has led in tonnage produced, but a large proportion of the output of this province is shorter, nonspinning grades. Since 1916 the Union of South Africa and Rhodesia have become increasingly important as sources of the higher-grade spinning fibers. Before the World War Russia ranked next to Canada as a producer of asbestos, but during the revolution- ary period the industry in that country was almost at a standstill. In 1926, however, activity was revived, and each year since then production and exports have increased greatly. Minor quantities of asbestos are produced in Cyprus; Australia, Finland, and several other countries. Chrysotile is the leading product in all the producing countries, but substantial quantities of both blue (crocidolite) and brown (amosite) asbestos also are produced in the Union of South Africa. Minor quantities of anthophyllite and similar amphibole varieties are mined in the United States, Italy, Bulgaria, Finland, and several other countries.

The Bureau of Mines researched methods for recovering copper from cyclone and electrostatic-precipitator dusts of primary copper smelters as part of its program to maximize minerals and metals recovery from primary and secondary domestic resources. Small-scale studies showed that use of 110 pct stoichiometric sulfur and 123 pct stoichiometric carbon, based on producing a 40-pct copper-iron matte, resulted in the recovery of 95 pct of the copper contained in the dust. Typical mattes contained less than 10 pct of the arsenic, 30 pct of the bismuth, and 45 pct of the antimony and tin contained in the dust. Matte was converted to blister copper by injecting up to 200 pct of the stoichiometric oxygen requirement over a period of 2 to 3 hours. Up to 76 pct of the copper contained in the dust was recovered as a crude blister copper containing about 2 pct arsenic, 0.5 pct antimony, and less than 0.1 pet bismuth and tin. A matte-white metal product resulted from carbothermically reducing dust with coal, lime, and silica. Up to 95 pct of the copper was recovered in the combined product.

With the surrender of the Japanese Imperial Government as a climax to the capitulation of the German High Command , the main objective of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Division pivoted from war assignments to its main normal functions . One of these functions is to give wide public distribution to valuable technical facts which the Division has obtained through research on petroleum , natural gas , helium , and related subjects . During the war years many engineering data and scientific facts could be released only on a restricted basis as reports to war agencies and others immediately concerned . Moreover , many of the wartime reports contained masses of detailed data that were prepared under stress to meet emergency schedules . For peacetime publication and application , these data must be reviewed , correlated , and rearranged so as to present the essentials in proper form . To illustrate , a wartime report of 50 pages might be resolved into one curve in a composite graph for a peacetime publication . Another factor affecting the orientation of the work of the Division is the broader horizon of research revealed by its war activities . Fundamental research and careful engineering analyses are just as important in time of peace as in time of war; in fact , they should be more important to the forward view , because under peace conditions disrupting influences that distract from the orderly acquisition of knowledge are minimized . Therefore , the concerted effort has been not to " salvage " the results of the war activities , but to evaluate them on the basis of their relative importance in the future economy of the country . Where wartime investigations have pointed to peacetime accomplishments , the effort has been to give the corresponding type of work additional emphasis . This adjustment can not be made hurriedly , but many of the necessary preliminary steps on the new course have been taken ..

"Welfare endeavor in connection with both the metal and the coal mines of Utah has shown gratifying progress during recent years, and in most mining towns of the state, both the operators and their employees deserve much credit for the efforts put forth to better the living, working, educational and recreational conditions. Progress has been and is being made, but there are still a few important towns where purer water and better sewage disposal are pressing needs.In the older metal-mining towns that are incorporated and are independent of the mining properties operating in the vicinity, less opportunity is presented for the companies to exercise efforts looking toward improved welfare conditions than in company towns controlled by the mine operators.However, even in such towns the companies can do much to better welfare conditions, as shown by the progress in Bingham Canyon during the past several years. The Utah Copper Company has spent $800,000 since 1920, in the erection of modern brick cottages, apartment houses and the Germnell Memorial Club. The cottages and apartment houses have every convenience to be found in up-to-date city homes. The Gemmell Memorial Club erected and equipped at a cost of $175,000 was provided by the company for the benefit of the Utah Copper employees living in the canyon and has been made the recreational center for the camp. Another improvement is the $100,000 fireproof hotel built by the United States Mine of the United States Mining, Smelting and Refining; Co. in the Copperfield section of Bingham Canyon. This hotel will accommodate 105 men exclusive of hotel help and has all the conveniences of a city hotel."

Provide a low-cost, low-maintenance method for im¬proving mine water quality on abandoned mine land (AML) sites. Approach A model (figure 1) is presented for selecting, designing, and sizing one or several passive mine drainage treatment systems that can be used in remediation of AML. The three principal types of passive mine drainage technologies for the treatment of coal mine drainage are an aerobic system, a compost wetland, and an anoxic limestone drain. The multistep approach presented here provides a simplified method to characterize the type and magnitude of the water quality problem and then to select either a single treatment system or a combination of treatment systems to address the specific site situation. How It Works Step 1. Discharge Characterization. Characterization of the discharge consists of measuring the discharge flow rate and collecting water samples at the point of discharge for chemical analysis. Both the flow rate and chemistry of a discharge can vary seasonally and in response to storm events. It is important to account for this variability by determining flow rates and water chemistry under various conditions. Water should be analyzed for pH, dissolved iron (Fe), alkalinity, and hot acidity (using the H2O2 method).

This report describes a new method of weighing based upon observing the apparent weight of an object ill two separate pure gases. The method is presented in terms of experimental data which prove its soundness, but does not attempt to show the maximum accuracy possible with this technique. The new method incorporates the underlying principle that the apparent weight of an object is a linear function of the density of the atmosphere in which the object is weighed. The coefficients of this linear function are the true mass and volume of the object. From this functional relationship the true mass and volume of the object may be determined.

This Bureau of Mines study was initiated to determine whether or not a large-scale investigation of 400-Hz applications in coal mines was justified as a means of increasing safety in operations due to size and weight reductions in portable and other mining machinery. Potential uses for 400-Hz power in mining operations are explored, and cost and size comparisons with 60-Hz systems are made. The use of variable-frequency motor drive is suggested for conveyors. The conclusion was reached that there is no significant potential safety increase due to a general size and weight reduction, as the fact of such general reduction cannot be demonstrated.

The major fire and fire injury findings for all metal/nonmetal mining categories for 1990-2001 are shown in tables 64-65. Table 66, partly illustrated in figure 22, shows the number of fires, fire injuries, fire fatalities, risk rates, employees' working hours, and lost workdays for all metal/nonmetal mining categories by time period. For all metal/nonmetal operations (including stone and sand and gravel), a total of 518 fires occurred during 1990-2001; 296 of those fires caused 308 injuries and 4 fatalities (Ewhr = 4,012 x 106 hr, In = 0.015, LWD = 36,204). Thirty fires and 26 injuries involved contractors. The greatest number of fires and fire injuries occurred at surface operations; the highest risk rate values were also calculated for surface operations. The number of fires increased during the first four 2-year time periods (1990-1991, 1992-1993, 1994-1995, and 1996-1997), then decreased during the last two periods (1998-1999 and 2000-2001). The number of injuries showed a decrease throughout the periods, accompanied by an increase in employees' working hours. Twenty-five firefighting interventions by mine rescue teams in underground mines and at least 30 interventions at surface operations were required to combat these fires. However, 45 fires destroyed or heavily damaged facilities and equipment (including 19 pieces of mobile equipment) because of failure of firefighting methods, late fire detection, undetected fires, or fire size. Ninety-seven fires were detected late, and 30 fires were undetected. The ignition sources that caused the greatest number of fires were flame cutting/welding spark/slag/flame (169 fires or 33% with 137 injuries), hydraulic fluid/fuel sprayed onto equipment hot surfaces (89 fires or 17% with 46 injuries and 3 fatalities), heat source/explosion and flammable liquids/ gas/refueling fuel on hot surfaces (98 fires or 19% with 73 injuries), electrical short/arcing (51 fires or 10% with 16 injuries), and spontaneous combustion/hot material (46 fires or 9% with 17 injuries). The flame cutting/welding spark/slag/flame source caused fires usually involving welders' clothing or oxyfuel/grease and other materials (including chute and dust collector liners, flammable liquids, belt material, crusher, hopper and shaker deck materials, washer plants, equipment mechanical components, stampler breaker, hydraulic fluid, rubber tires and hoses, gear boxes, bin feeder, dump rope cables, screen liner and screen panel, kiln and shaft material, pipelines, liquor pumps, wood pallets, electrical junction boxes, handrails, grease, refuse, shop and wood). The spontaneous combustion/hot material and electrical fires were usually detected late due to lack of combustion gas/smoke detection systems. This contract was directed toward a study of the attenuating properties of earmuffs as worn by miners. Two attenuation measurement procedures were utilized. Human subjects were tested in a diffuse sound field according to threshold shift procedures recommended by the American National Standards Institute and a physical measurement procedure was accomplished in the same diffuse field on the same human subjects with microphones placed simultaneously on the inside and outside of the muffs. All measurements were obtained in one third octave of random noise. The results of the study indicated that physical and psychophysical attenuation measurements are in essential agreement at frequencies from 125 Hz to 2 KHz. Above 2 KHz the psychophysical measurement demonstrates larger amounts of attenuation than the physical measurement. The difference in attenuation ranged from approximately 7.0 dB to 9.0 dB at frequencies of 4 KHz and above. A possible explanation for the observed differences in attenuation has been presented.

The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory tests on samples of pozzolaniccement concrete to develop a low- strength backfill . Results show that support costs can be lowered by replacing a portion of the portland cement in mine backfill with pozzolan ( fly ash ) and lime . Unconfined compression tests on various ratios of fly ash to cement in 84 samples produced compressivestrength curves that can be used to estimate the best backfill mix for any mine .

"IntroductionMany bituminous coal-mining companies have inaugurated extensive safety Programs, but the failure to have approved or permissible equipment or safe practice in only one part of a mine has resulted in disaster. The necessity of using only equipment bearing the U. S. Bureau of Mines approval plate is emphasized by the fact that many accidents are the direct result of carelessness on the part of trusted employees using non-permissible equipment. A concrete example is found in the case of an explosion on October 26, 1926, in a mine in the Pittsburgh district, Pennsylvania.Story of the ExplosionAt about 10 o'clock on the night of the explosion an examination was made in No 2 butt left and parallel off 7o. 14 north, and was found to be clear of dangerous accumulations of gas. (See figure). Several hours later a crew of two men brought a self-propelling rock-dusting machine within 50 feet of the face of Po. 2 butt parallel before they examined for gas. The machine operator found an accumulation of explosive gas about 18 inches from the roof. He began to wave his arms thoroughly mixing the gas and air. Undoubtedly a highly explosive mixture was created, and as the men attempted to run the machine back to fresh air an explosion occurred.The helper dropped to the floor and was burned about the face and wrists. The machine operator ran down the entry and was more severely burned about the face, neck, and arms. He later developed pneumonia and died. Both men reached the door in the chute between No. 14 and No. 15 north. A pumper, who had felt the rush of air, found the men and helped them to walk outside."

A diphenyl ether calorimeter for measuring high-temperature heat contents of ferrous alloys and iron-and steelmaking slags was constructed and calibrated with specimens of molybdenum, alumina, and platinum that were heated to temperatures ranging from 1,720° to 1,875° K. The standard deviation of the calibration measurements was 0.37 percent. By measurements of the enthalpy of delta and liquid iron, the heat of fusion of iron was found to be 3,298 ±100 cal per mole.

This is one of a series of circulars dealing with mining methods, practices, and costs. It describes the method of sinking a shaft 60 inches in diameter with a shot drill, as employed at the Idaho Maryland mine, Grass Valley, Calif. The operation involved a great deal of experimentation in applying the shot-drill method to large bore drilling, overcoming mechanical and other difficulties which developed during sinking, and developing operating technique. Under such circumstances, costs are obviously higher than they would be after the pioneer work has been done, but even so, these actually obtained compare favorably with costs of sinking by more conventional methods. The Bureau of Mines investigated two methods for recovering potash from carnallite ore in continuous 100-lb/h flotation units. In the insoluble-slimes flotation procedure, insoluble slimes were removed by flotation prior to potash flotation. In the direct flotation method, insoluble slimes were depressed and the potash floated directly without prior removal of the insoluble slimes. Seventy-three percent of the potash in the ore was recovered in a leached final KCl product contain-ing 59.1 pet K20 using the insoluble-slimes flotation method. The direct flotation method recovered 74.5 pct of the potash in a final product containing 60.2 pet K20. The rate of return on the investment was calculated at 13 pct for the insoluble-slimes flotation method and 15 pct for the direct flotation method, based on a Bureau economic evaluation.

Turquoise is prized solely for its attractive color ; it is dull and opaque , wholly lacking the brilliant luster that is the chief attraction of transparent gems . The best quality of turquoise is blue , of a soft and pleasing tone , like the color of clear sky but distinctive , as indicated by use of the term " turquoise blue . " Often its value is lessened by a greenish cast ; in many stones the green predominates . A large proportion of the turquoise that is mined is utterly worthless , so inferior and unattractive is its color . The finest grade of turquoise comes from Persia , notable from Nishapur . Large quantities have been mined in the Southwestern States of the United States , and less important deposits have been found in a number of the other States .

This Bureau of Mines report discusses tests conducted with four different catalytic reactor designs to determine the influences of exhaust treatment systems on emissions from diesel engines. Although there was significant differences in oxidation efficiencies at light to intermediate engine loads, all four catalysts were very effective in reducing emissions at heavy loads. Compositional determinations included carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, unburned hydrocarbons, oxides of nitrogen, aldehydes, sulfur dioxide, sulfates, and particulate loading. Particulate size, exhaust odor intensity, and the character of the unburned hydrocarbon component were also determined.
