A study was undertaken by the Bureau of Mines to develop a simple, reliable test for field detection of selenium in rocks and soils. Two methods are described for qualitative detection of selenium, dependent upon its form of occurrence and the presence of interfering constituents in the sample. Both methods involve fusion of the sample in a test tube to form elemental selenium that will volatilize and condense as a red deposit on the cooler upper portion of the test tube. The methods are sensitive to 10 parts per million, (p.p.m.) equivalent to 0.001 percent, and can be made semiquantitative by using suitable standard samples. INTRODUCTION Although selenium is widely distributed in the United States, the known deposits are either so small or so low grade that they cannot be processed economically for selenium alone-4/ At present, commercial production is a byproduct of the smelting and refining of base-metal ores, particularly copper.5/ About 0.75 pound of selenium is recovered per ton of electrolytic copper, and small amounts are recovered by special treatment of assorted smelter dusts and fume products. Since selenium is a strategic metal in short supply, new sources are being sought by both Government and private interests.

Under the Bureau of Mines Research Contract Number H0252071, Foundation Sciences, Inc. has compared the relative effectiveness of roof bolts installed at an angle over the rib with that of bolts installed vertically at the rib side, The information gathered during this investigation was sufficient to supply supplementary information on the mechanics of roof support systems and the general acceptability of field instrumentation methods. During the 140 days of field investigation, 235 bolts were installed, 45 inclined and 190 vertical, in two adjacent intersections. Of these 235 bolts, 30 were in-stalled with load cells and 38 were tested for anchor capabilities. In addition to this instrumentation, the deformation of the opening was measured by convergence meter on 9 lines throughout the two testing areas, and a borescope and photo-elastic gauges were utilized to obtain information on the roof action beyond the surface.

"4.1 IntroductionIn previous chapters impactors have been described as useful instruments for classifying particles by their aerodynamic diameters and for measuring particle size distributions. These impactors can be used most reliably if the user has some understanding as to how the impactor classifies particles and what parameters are important in this classification process. This understanding can best be obtained by a theoretical inspection of inertial principles.This chapter reviews the most recent theoretical impactor work and the latest theoretical efficiency curves. Procedures are then given for using these efficiency curves in the design and evaluation of cascade impactors. Finally, several examples are given comparing theoretical and experimental efficiency curves, pointing out when the theory can be used with great confidence and when the theory should be used only as a guideline.Due to the rather simple principle of operation of an inertial impactor (i.e., the impingement of a jet of particle-laden air on a flat plate) the impactor readily lends itself to theoretical analysis. Three notable works in the early 1950,s were those of Davies and Aylward (1951), Davies et al. (1951), and Ranz and Wong (1952).Davies and Aylward (1951) used a method of conformal mapping to obtain an analytical solution to Euler's equation for the flow of a frictionless fluid through a rectangular impactor. Numerical calculations were then carried out whereby the equations of motion of the particles were solved in a stepwise manner, leading to a determination of the efficiency curves. Since this theory assumed potential flow, the effect of Reynolds numbers on the characteristics of the impactor could not be determined.Ranz and Wong (1952) used an approximate flow field to calculate the efficiency of both round and rectangular nozzle impactors. In the vicinity of the stagnation point, the flow field was assumed to be that of frictionless stagnation flow. Here, the resulting equation of motion for the particles was found to be in a form similar to equations for free vibration with viscous damping. Therefore, the known solutions of the vibration equations were applied directly to the problem and the efficiency curves calculated. This solution technique, however, could not take into account the various geometric variations such as the jet-to-plate distance in the determination of the efficiency curves.The work of Ranz and Wong (1952) was later modified by Mercer and Chow (1968) and Mercer and Stafford (1969) so that the rather simple flow fields of Ranz and Wong (1952) could be used to account for various jet-to-plate distances. The same techniques, however, were used to determine the impactor collection efficiency curves."

The objective of this project was to develop technical data and evaluate performance and utility of leaky feeder communications systems currently used in North American underground mines. The desired information was obtained principally through on-site surveys. Altogether, six of the seven mining companies known to be using leaky feeder communications were visited. This report covers the findings of these surveys. In addition, the report provides a brief background summary of mine communications, a technical discussion of leaky feeder systems, and conclusions and recommendations based on the results of the survey.

"INTRODOCTIONMeasurement of the contribution of diesel exhaust to respirable aerosol in mine environments has become increasingly important because of current concerns over the occupational health effects resulting from exposure to diesel emissions. In response to this, the U.S. Bureau of Mines is developing and evaluating new sampling methods for measuring diesel aerosol in underground mines. Two such techniques are being studied by the Bureau, size selective sampling and Chemical Mass Balance (CMB) modeling. These techniques use measurable physical or chemical characteristics of a mine aerosol sample to infer the amount of diesel particulate material contained in the sample.Size selective sampling is being adapted for measurement of diesel aerosol by the Particle Technology Laboratory (PTL) of the University of Minnesota under sponsorship by the Bureau. 1 It is based on the premise that diesel and mineral dust aerosol can be physically separated by size and collected during sampling using inertial impaction. An independent effort by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health to develop a size selective sampling technique was also sponsored by the Bureau.The second technique, CMB modeling, is being developed by the Bureau as an alternative measurement technique to referee the results obtained using size selective sampling.3 It compares measured trace element ""finger prints"" of aerosol sources with similar profiles of mine aerosol samples. From these, the portions of the sample contributed by each source can be determined. Results of these investigations in underground coal mines have confirmed that diesel and coal dust aerosol are of different size and can be measured separately using size selective sampling techniques.A major difference in diesel usage among underground mines is the requirement for exhaust gas cooling systems in coal and gassy noncoal mines. Nongassy mines usually employ limited exhaust conditioning in the form of catalytic converters, which have limited effect on primary exhaust particulate. The cooling system in most general use in gassy mines is the water scrubber. This device has little effect on most of the gases but removes particulate material from the exhaust. 5 Because of this, exhaust aerosol characteristics in nongassy mines are expected to be different. To see if size selective sampling techniques can be used in such mines, the Bureau and the University of Minnesota conducted a second study in three metal and nonmetal mines, two nongassy and one rated as gassy."

Investigations over several years have disclosed that the principal manners of occurrence of shuttle-car injuries are in order: 1. Victims in contact with roof or crossbars. 2. Victims in contact with ribs or timber legs. 3. Victims falling from, or jerked from, shuttle cars. 4. Victims in contact with overhanging brows or protruding pine for pin timbers, or water lines. 5. Contact with persons or collisions with parked equipment. 6. Victims injured by roof falls or falling timbers caused by knocking out roof supports with shuttle cars. 7. Victims injured by runaway shuttle cars. 8. Victims injured while loading or unloading timbers or other materials from shuttle cars. These recurring types of shuttle-car accidents reflect the physical conditions of the working sections, certain safety deficiencies in shuttle-car maintenance and design, and unsafe practices by operators.

A prototype end-cab shuttle car (SC) design has been developed to improve protection and address ergonomic concerns of the SC operator in low coal mines. The new design features an end cab transversely mounted to the SC and equipped with a closed-circuit video system. The end cab was retrofitted to a low-coal SC and evaluated in surface trials at the U.S. Bureau of Mines. During surface trials, test operators evaluated the end-cab SC relative to visibility; cab features-space, seating, controls, and operator position; tramming-inby, outby, and turning corners; and dumping. Trials were conducted using 12 test subjects; 6 were experienced SC operators. Results of the trials were promising. Of the experienced operators, the only operator with low-coal experience gave the new design the highest rating. Four experienced operators rated the end-cab design "better" to "much better" than a standard center-driven, side-cab SC for visibility when tramming, protection from roof and rib hazards, and no change in seat position with direction of travel. This report discusses research to modify a used 21SC JOY SC, retrofit the SC with the Bureau-developed end-cab, and evaluate the retrofitted end-cab SC in surface trials.

The preface of the United States Bureau of Mines Manual of First Aid Instruction contains the following paragraphs: One of the most important inquiries that Congress has authorized the Bureau of Mines to conduct relates to health condi- tions among those engaged in the mineral industries. Investigations made early with a view to bettering these conditions demonstrated the need of prompt care of injured miners, as, under the difficulties inherent to mining and other mineral industries; wounds seemingly unimportant, if not treated promptly, may become infected and possibly cause permanent crippling or even death of the porach. In the past many seriously injured persons have been treated by fellow workers ignorant of approved means of treatment and transportation and have been handled in such a manner as to cause suffering and to accentuate injuries to such a degree as to bring about permanent disablement. Accordingly, the need of general instruction in first aid became apparent. It must be recognized that the conditions in and about the mines, mills, smelters, quarries, oil fields, etc., usually present difficulties not found in large industrial centers where experienced surgeons are available and hospitals close at hand. Many mines are isolated and, when an accident occurs several miles underground, there may be a serious lapse of time before the injured person can be brought to the surface and taken to the hospital or given attention by a sur- geon who may have to come a long distance. Under such conditions it has been frequently demonstrated that, if effective first aid is not given, the injured person may die or become permanently crippled... First-aid instruction has been found to be an excellent aid3in pre- venting accidents. The Bureau of Mines monitored surface subsidence and water level fluctuations in 10 shallow observation wells above a series of four adjacent longwall panels in southwestern Pennsylvania, for about 4 yr. This study attempted to correlate the changes in the water levels within the observation wells to the measured vertical and horizontal ground movements associated with subsidence. Results of this study indicate that the fluctuation of the water levels appears to be a function of the well location relative to the mine layout and the proximity of mining. Wells are generally unaffected by mining of a preceding panel unless they are located within the angle of draw for that panel. Wells located at the centerline of a longwall panel exhibit the greatest fluctuation and head loss. This relationship may be related to the strain developed by the advancing longwall face. The water levels in the wells monitored fell at the greatest rate when the ground surrounding the well was in tension. The rate of the decline decreased as the dynamic development of the strains was changing from tension to compression. The water levels were found to be near the premining level before the ground was subject to maximum compressive strain. Nine of the ten wells investigated recovered to their premining water level after mining was completed.

The Bureau of Mines made small-scale continuous tests and large-scale commercial plant tests of a calcareous fluorspar ore near Cave-In-Rock, Ill., to determine if the application of the lignin-fluoride process of fluorspar flotation would be industrially feasible for treatment of fluorspar ores, and also to compare the lignin-fluoride process with the quebracho process, which is the method currently used for concentrating calcareous fluorspar ores. The small-scale continuous tests yielded fluorspar concentrates analyzing 93.6 percent CaF2 with a recovery of 87.6 percent of the total fluorspar in the ore. In large-scale commercial plant tests, a fluorspar concentrate analyzing 93.3 percent CaF2 with a recovery of 78.0 percent was produced by the quebracho method. About 86.0 percent of the fluorspar was recovered in a metallurgical-grade fluorspar concentrate from the lignin-fluoride circuit which analyzed 89.9 percent CaF2? with a much simpler flowsheet than that in the current commercial application.

The explosive-expansion center-hole anchor was designed and developed for the specific purpose of use as a component of an instrument system that measures differential ground movement within a small drill hole in rock. Such anchors should have an unobstructed center hole, should be installed without a twisting action which could tangle connecting wires, and should be capable of being installed at depths in excess of 100 feet. The anchor has a thick-walled center tube and a thin-walled outer tube. Low-energy detonating cord, wrapped around the center tube and detonated with a mild end primer, expands the outer tube to produce anchorage. The explosive-expansion center-hole anchor can be installed easily in drill holes of any inclination but cannot be installed under water. Centering of the anchor is critical with regard to its subsequent holding power. The anchor is safe to make and handle.

An extensive experimental program was carried out to determine the variability of respirable dust samplers and to determine whether area dust sampling is feasible in coal mines. For sampler variability, it was found under laboratory conditions, that a single dust measurement could be as much as 0.30 mg/M3 from the true value at the 95% confidence level. Under actual underground mining operations, this difference could be as much as 0.52 mg/M3 in the 0 -5.0 mg/M3 range. The results from dust sampling on 175 production shifts involving over 2,500 on-man and area dust samples showed that area sampling is viable, but the field investigation did not establish necessarily where the best area locations were.

[A survey of the literature relating to ignition temperatures of acetylene-air and acetylene-oxygen mixtures reveals rather wide disagreement in the reported results. In some instances the ignition temperatures of acetylene-air mixtures were reported to be lower then those of acetylene-oxygen mixtures, which is contrary to experience with other combustibles. To clear up some of the reported discrepancies, the authors have investigated the ignition temperatures of acetylene both in air and oxygen, and their results are presented in this report.]

"INTRODUCTION Preliminary reports by Bureau of Mines engineers 3/ and by the Federal Geological Survey 4/ suggested that exploration would discover substantial reserves of minable ore in the Contact mine, Grant County, New Mexico. During February and March 1943, a sampling program was conducted on this property under the direction of the author. This was art of a general survey of the manganese districts of southwestern New Mexico.In its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources, to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as practicable soon as after its conclusion. The Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, R. G. Knickerbocer, chief, analyzes samples and performs beneficiation tests. Both these branches are under the supervision of Dr. S. Dean, assistant director. With respect to this report, special acknowledgment is due to C. H. Johnson, district engineer for New Mexico, and E. D. Gardner, regional engineer, and his staff, of the Central Region of the Bureau of Mines at the time of this work in 1943; also to Kenworthy, metallurgist at the Rolla. A tube-wall reactor with a Raney nickel catalyst deposited on the outer wall of the tube by flame spraying is effective in the practically complete conversion of 3H2+1CO synthesis gas to a high-Btu gas (methane) at an hourly space velocity of 7,000 volumes of gas (NTP) per hour per volume of annular volume. Partially reacted synthesis gas containing an appreciable amount of methane can also be treated in this reactor to increase the heating value to over 900 Btu per cubic foot. Excellent heat removal through the metal wall to a coolant and temperature control were obtained. The heat transfer co-efficient from the catalyst to the coolant was about 275 Btu per hour per square foot per ° F. Synthesis tests were conducted with tubes 1.2 inches in ad by 6 inches long, and 1.3 inches in od by 36 inches long. When operating at a synthesis gas rate of 100 to 120 scfh per square foot of catalyst-coated tube, catalyst life was long enough to realize a catalyst cost for the raw Raney nickel alloy of about 0.3 cent per 1,000 cubic feet of pipeline gas (900 to 950 Btu per scf). Gas recycling at ratios of 1:1 to 3:1 was effective in increasing conversion and in extending the life of the catalyst to about 16 weeks. In cost and in operating characteristics the tube-wall reactor compares favorably with the fluidized-bed and hot-gas-recycle reactor systems for the synthesis of high-Btu gas from H2+CO.

Heats of solution of samarium (III) oxide and chloride in hydrochloric acid and of samarium (III) oxide, sulfate, and hydrated sulfate in sulfuric acid were measured. The heats of solution of this hygroscopic oxide are larger than those from the literature, probably because of more complete removal of water in the present study. From the literature value for the heat of combustion of samarium, the heats of formation of samarium (III) chloride and sulfate are -244.18 ± 0.41 and -928.5 ± 1.6 kcal./mole, respectively. The heat of hydration of the sulfate is -34.7 ± 1.0 kcal./mole. The heats of formation of other samarium com-pounds have been recalculated, using the new data.

Beginning in 1991, scientists at the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory recorded interviews with individuals who are recognized as experts in mine emergency response. These 30 veterans related stories and observations from events experienced during as many as 47 years of response activities. Overall, the response veterans averaged 29 years of mine emergency response experience and 35 years of mining experience. Interviewees included representatives from mining companies, the United Mine Workers of America, and State and Federal agencies. Most of their comments dealt not so much with technical aspects of particular mine emergency responses, but rather the human side of more general topics, including preparedness, experience, people on-site, mine rescue teams, and decision-making. An analysis of their interviews provides an overview of lessons learned on-site at some of the largest mine disasters since the mid-1940s. This knowledge was gathered so that it could be provided to today's miners and to tomorrow's emergency response personnel. It is expected that the collective wisdom obtained can be used to help train new responders and guide those decisions that will have to be made on the scenes of future events.

The inherent heating value or the amount of heat that will be produced when a coal is completely burned is measured in British thermal units (B. t. u.) per pound of coal . This standard heat unit is the quantity of heat required to raise the temperature of 1 pound of water 1 °F . at about 60 °F . The amount of inherent heat is determined by burning a small quantity of the coal in a heat meter or calorimeter , which gives results in British thermal units . The exact manner of making this test is standardized by the American Society for Testing Materials.4/ The value so determined is the total heat developed by complete burning, with all the products of combustion cooled down to the temperature of the calorimeter . The calorimeter is kept at about room temperature . This total heat is sometimes called the " high" or gross heat value , because it includes the latent heat given up by the water vapor in the products of combustion when the vapor condenses to water in the calorimeter . The heat as measured is reported as the heat of combustion at constant volume , since the burning is carried out in a tightly closed calorimeter chamber whose volume does not change . In actual use , coal is usually burned in an open - end chamber at constant pressure , generally somewhere near atmospheric . As the heat of combustion of coal at constant pressure is very slightly higher than the heat of combustion at constant volume , it might be considered that the heat at constant pressure should be used as the standard reference base . For an ordinary eastern coal the heat at constant pressure is about 16 B. t . u. per pound higher than the heat at constant volume . Calorimeter corrections , ordinarily not considered , that could have been subtracted from the heating value before reporting , may amount to about as much . Hence , the value reported is apt to be more nearly the true heating value at constant pressure than at constant volume .

"INTRODUCTION During the recent war the Bureau of Mines was requested to obtain in¬formation on the temperature at which ammonium nitrate mixed with certa: contaminants would react rapidly. This information was desired in connection with an investigation of an explosion that had occurred during the evaporation, by air agitation, of volutions containing ammonium nitrate in which compressor oil that might have passed the filters was suspected of being a contaminant.During the course of this work it was found that mixtures of ammonium nitrate and zinc reacted rapidly at comparatively low temperatures: and since zinc could not positively be eliminated as a contaminant in the explosion in question, a series of tests was carried out, not only with mixtures of ammonium nitrate and compressor oil but also ammonium nitrate and zinc with and without oil. A few experiments were made with metals other than zinc.The investigation was not as extensive as might have been desired, owing to limitations -in time. The results are presented at this time in view of their current interest in connection with the Texas City disaster, in which a large quantity of ammonium nitrate detonated in the holds of two ships."
