This paper examines the aspects of differing types of blasting cuts in underground headings with consideration to the reduction of number of holes and costs. At least one comparison study is related where costs per advance meter were significantly improved. The technical aspect of the paper covers a study of the effects of various blasthole delay intervals on resulting crater volume, ground vibration, and fragmentation for six hole V-cuts.

Jointing of steel rods in reinforced concrete structures needs careful consideration as it renders the structure weak at the joint. The jointing is usually done at sections of structural members, where the bending moment and shear force are least. Jointing is done either by overlapping the rods or welding or by mechanical splicing. A novel method of jointing them is by inserting the two rods in a steel sleeve and cladding it on to the rods by subjecting the sleeve to explosive energy. A rod jointed in this fashion is tested for direct tension and bending when used in a reinforced concrete beam. The test results show that it is an effective method. The advantage is that a number of joints can be made in a single operation.

Computer simulation of the physics involved in conventional rock blasting can be split into two phases; transient stress wave propagation and rock motion. Because the two phases involve totally different mechanisms and time scales, they must be numerically modeled with two different computer programs. The first phase is usually modeled with a finite element or finite difference code which treats the rock as a continuum and simulates the transient stress wave and subsequent fragmentation of the rock. The second phase is usually modeled with a distinct element technique where the rock mass after fragmentation is no longer treated as a continuum but as a finite number of distinct particles that interact with each other through collision mechanics.

Shale oil recovery rates that can be achieved in underground in situ retorts can be strongly influenced by the shale breakage and fragment-size distribution achieved during rubblization. Since the fragmentation pattern in the retort is a direct result of the blast design used for rubblization, the characterizing blast parameters should be carefully selected. Explosives should be matched to the host material and blast geometries properly chosen so that the required fragmentation results are achieved at optimum costs. Special attention must be directed to selecting blast parameters that produce uniform bed permeability, suppression of fines, proper fragment size distribution, and minimal damage to the retort walls and ceiling. The influence of joints and natural fractures should also be known. In instances where the requisite blasting parameters are unknown, they should be determined from test blasts.

Few tools allow for accurately tracking ore dilution after blasting. Existing methods often rely on data analysis or linear interpolation of velocity, which can be imprecise and less effective in varied geological settings. A promising alternative is the use of numerical simulations, which involve complex mathematical calculations incorporating real physical data about explosives and geological characteristics. These simulations can model blast-induced fragmentation and subsequent ore dilution with greater accuracy, providing detailed insights into blast dynamics by considering factors such as explosive type, blast pattern, and rock properties. Numerical simulations integrate data from sources like seismic sensors, blast monitoring equipment, and geological surveys, offering a holistic view that single-method approaches cannot match. By simulating different scenarios, mines can predict the outcomes of various blasting strategies, optimize blast designs to minimize ore dilution, and maximize recovery. Advanced numerical simulations enhance the prediction of fragmentation distribution and size post-blast, crucial for effective dilution control and maximizing ore recovery rates.

A large open pit iron ore mine in Brazil, which has a heterogeneous lithology, faces a challenge in defining drill and blast patterns to achieve the expected results. The mine needed to obtain an automated representation of the fragmentation curves and correlate them to the respective blasts, lithologies and quality parameters, seeking the continuous optimization of the fragmentation process and its benefits to the subsequent comminution processes. Trials were carried out for 5 months to demonstrate the functionality of an autonomous fragmentation monitoring system that analyzes the granulometric curve of the material throughout the muckpile and makes the results available online and in real time. The system, which contains a binocular camera, a processing unit and an antenna, was installed in a shovel, to evaluate the following KPI's: monitoring failures, monitoring capacity, physical availability and reportability of oversized boulders. The system analyzed 33,060 samples, with an average capacity of 285 photos every 24 hours, 127 during the day and 158 at night, all measured, analyzed, stored, and made available on its online platform, reporting 223 alerts of P80 above 400mm (15.7 in) and 38 particle sizes above 900mm (35.4 in). The inactive and operational hours of the monitoring system corresponded, respectively, to the idle and worked hours of the shovel, according to dispatch data. There were no camera or processor failures, and rain, dust or poor internet conditions did not impact sampling and fragmentation analysis, indicating 100% physical availability of the system. The autonomous monitoring analyzed 139 times more samples compared to the currently used manual method. In addition to increasing sampling representativeness and automating the process, it increases the safety, quality, and productivity of granulometric analysis, eliminating the exposure of people in the mine and human bias in the analyses. Additional analyses were performed by correlating digitally centralized drill and blast data, data from autonomous drills and fragmentation results. Automated obtention of granulometric curves favors quick decision-making and optimization of blasts to achieve better results in productivity and cost reduction in the plant and mine operation. The autonomous fragmentation monitoring system met the need presented by the mine, proving to be a key tool in continuous improvement projects, including Mine to Plant.

A recant Bureau of Mines analysis has shown that failure of blast area security systems is the mayor cause of mine blasting accidents. Accidents occur during scheduled blasting because of failure to clear the blast zone, inadequate guarding, and failure of personnel to follow instructions, retreat to a safe location and/or take adequate cover. The high incidence of blastslte security-related accidents could be considerably reduced by increased attention to improving minesite blast-guarding practices.

"In bench blasting, the distribution of loaded explosives with respect to the burden rock has strong effects on digging especially at the toe area. Blast design often focuses on other results such as percent-cast or fragmentation, sometimes leaving a diggability problem at the toe of the blast that is not discovered until excavation. A method for assessing the influence of blast design on diggability has been developed. This method relates the kinetic energy and rock displacement experienced by the material in the muckpile to its diggability. Simulation of the blast along with the calculation of kinetic energy and diggability is done with the discrete element computer program DMC_BLAST(DMC: Distinct Motion Code)."

A blast casting model is proposed to predict the burden velocity in bench blasting. This blast casting model is the first theoretical model that 1) explains the throwing procedures and mechanisms, 2) uses the explosion pressure as the primary source in throwing rock fragments, 3) applies them to field conditions successfully. Also the predicted burden velocities are based on the rock properties, the explosive properties, and the drilling and initiation patterns. This blast casting model is programmed into a computer software "ROCKFRAG". The comparisons between "ROCKFRAG" predicted values and two field test data are in good agreement.

As the title "Cast Blasting Around Town" implies, this paper details the starting of a cast blasting program in and around the town of Colstrip, Montana. As strip ratios have increased, the need to adapt and find solutions to provide coal at a reasonable cost to the captive power plants has risen. Colstrip, Montana has a long history of coal mining which dates back to the early 1920's when Foley Brothers began supplying coal strictly for powering locomotive engines. Early mining days starting in the 1920's and the progression up through the 1970's when mine mouth power plants were built will be discussed. To accomplish the desired results, early mining techniques included steam and electric powered equipment as well as a lot of actual horse power.

For precise control and timing of a blast, people use electric detonators. Most of these contain a fine metal “bridgewire,” that heats to the required burning temperature when electric current passes through it. Users should be careful. Stray voltage can fire these detonators. Some designs are particularly susceptible to electrostatic-discharge (ESD). We will discuss some of the accidents we have encountered in our forensic work. We will recommend specific safe procedures for handling and firing these devices.
