Compressive strength of rocks is often required by mining engineers and quarrying authorities for blasting operations. Uniaxial compressive strength of rocks can be predicted with reasonable accuracy with the help of point load strength tests which can be easily conducted at site by the field staff, simultaneously as the cores are recovered from drilling operations. A number of diametral point load tests and uniaxial compressive strength tests have been conducted on the specimens of different rock types under air dried, and saturated condition as well to study the effect of ground water saturation on strength. It has been observed that due to saturation uniaxial compressive strength and point load strength get reduced to a maximum of 32 and 29 per cent respectively. It has also been observed that uniaxial strength is sixteen times the point load strength in air dried as well as saturated condition. However, this factor used for calculating uniaxial compressive strength may be reduced to a lower value for the safety of miners in field blasting operations.

In this paper, the ground vibrations induced by blasting for stripping work at Sekkoy Open Cast Coal Mine belonging to TKI Yenikoy Lignite Mine (YLI) are investigated and the procedures for monitoring and control of ground vibrations are presented. Ground vibration measurements are conducted in the direction of Turkish Electricity Authorities’ Yenikoy Establishment and social facilities because of the complaints and annoyance arising from this site. Forty ground vibration records are taken in this direction and the vibrations are measured in transverse, vertical, longitudinal components together with peak vector sum. After then the scaled distance relationship is determined at 95% confidence value. Further, Fast Fourier Transform analyses are carried out to determine dominant frequencies for both ground and the structures and amplification factors. When the records taken at four different structures together with the ground are evaluated, it is observed that one of the apartment buildings is amplified the amplitude of longitudinal component 4.3 times. The maximum allowable amount of explosive that can be fired safely at this mine is calculated and recommended on. In the determination of safe amount, 95% confidence line, USBM RI8507 and OSMRE criteria, the dominant frequencies of both ground and the structure, amplification factor and the human response are taken into account.

The King George V (KGV) Shaft forms part of MTR Corporation Limited (MTRCL) Works Contract 703 extension of the underground West Island Line on Hong Kong Island. The Shaft and the associated adit was the sole access to excavate the running tunnels. Originally during the Detailed Design stage, it was concluded that blasting was not feasible at the KGV Shaft due to the close proximity of sensitive receivers in the form of residential buildings, electrical cables and hospitals. As a result, the Contractor planned to excavate the Shaft using mechanical means with a programme time of seven months. The Contractor appointed a Sub-contractor to analyse the feasibility of excavating the Shaft by blasting. The Sub-contractor reviewed the proposal and recommended the use of an innovative blasting technique that had never been previously employed in Hong Kong. The Sub-contractor recommended the Shaft be blasted using DetNet electronic delay detonator technology, manufactured by AEL Mining Services in South Africa, with an initial 1.5m depth of water ballast covering the blast face. The electronic delay detonators provided initiation accuracy to ensure there would be no overlap between sequentially detonating blastholes. The water ballast makes use of the effect of energy lost through the shock front causing the water to break up into droplets creating a spray dome resulting in the attenuation of the energy imparted into the surrounding rock mass. Various tests have demonstrated that both the maximum overpressure and impulse density are significantly reduced when water of a minimum depth is in direct contact with detonating explosives. This innovative blasting technique reduced the excavation programme by three months, saved HK$5 million in direct costs and totally mitigated the impacts on the public and other stakeholders nearby the KGV Shaft. Peak Particle Velocities (vibrations) rarely exceeded 2-3mm/sec (0.08-0.12in/sec) at a distance of 30-40m (98-131ft) from the blast location and air overpressure levels were reduced below the Hong Kong target level of 120dBL. In total, 24 blasts were fired with an average advance of 1.6m (5.25ft) with an average powder factor of 2.03kg/m3 (0.127lb/ft3) to 1.84 kg/m3 (0.114lb/ft3). The initiation pattern had 5ms between sequentially detonating blastholes and 20ms between adjoining rings.

For around ten years, electronic detonators are available for those who want to use advanced methods and to apply theories promoted by engineers and professors to reduce blast concerns or improve fragmentation and dilution. Furthermore, decision makers can verify the use of electronic detonators to drive down mining costs. Engineers and more specifically blasters are the actual users and have to be convinced of the easiness of electronic detonators. This paper deals with electronic detonators and the notion of easiness. Common feelings about the notion of easiness are discussed. Then, examples of new technologies like, automobile, photography or Information Technology are discussed to observe how they progressed throughout time with new features and sales volume. For the specific explosive initiation industry, each step of the life of an electronic detonator is dealt with concerning the easiness and a table is used to quantify this notion.

Minimum safe distance (MSD) calculations are used widely in military applications to determine safe standoff distances for breaching personnel. Accurate safe distances and an understanding of blast wave propagation are critical to preventing traumatic brain injury. These calculations are often based on spherical charges in open air. However, applications including explosive breaching use planar charges rather than spherical. Previous studies analyzed the shock propagation of a square planar charge of sheet explosive and concluded the anisotropic pattern conflicted with the Kingery Bulmash (KB) and MSD spherical models. It has been determined that these predictions do not adequately predict the realistic pressures in all directions and the trend has shown to be consistent across multiple charge geometries. In this series of experiments, pressures were collected from reference spheres and rectangular geometries of detonating cord and sheet explosive commonly used in breaching and improvised demolition for this comparison. This common configuration showed pressure differences at varying angles to the charge with the highest pressures measured at the 90° position perpendicular to the “door” to be breached. Lower pressures were found at the 0° and 15° positions where the breachers would normally be standing. The reflected shock from a surface such as a door was incorporated in a semi-confined situation and added to the shock observed by the breachers. Urban environments include many surrounding structures for these reflections to occur and further testing is necessary in such an environment to determine the full-scale impact. These findings may be useful to develop improved MSD calculations for breaching applications based on charge geometry, orientation to the blast, and nearby structures.

As part of its ongoing research concerning rock fragmentation by blasting, the Bureau of Mines has undertaken a series of test blasts where six cylinder-shaped pieces of granite rock were fragmented using high explosives. The tests were intended to: 1) Establish a dataset that could be used in the development and verification of theoretical models that simulate rock blasting and 2) To add to the fragmentation data currently being collected by Bureau researchers. The cylindrical geometry was chosen so that the fragmentation could be directly compared to two-dimensional computer simulations that assume an axisymmetric configuration as well as more sophisticated three-dimensional models. The granite cylinders, Carnelian granite and Charcoal granite, ranged in size from about 0.46 meters (18 inches) to 0.58 meters (23 inches) in diameter by 0.91 meters (36 inches) to 1.52 meters (60 inches) in length. Physical rock properties tests performed on the Charcoal granite cylinders indicated that the rocks did in fact have similar physical characteristics. PETN-based detonating cord and dynamite were used as the explosive charges and estimates of the values of some important physical properties are given. For the first five tests, the blasted rock was contained by a heavy rope mat suspended inside the Twin Cities Research Center's blasting shelter. The fragments from each of these shots were sorted and weighed to determine the corresponding fragment-size distributions. Even though different types of granite and cylinder sizes were used, similar fragment distributions were produced from shots that used a similar explosive, in this case the PETN-based detonating cord, and comparable burden-to-charge diameter ratios. Significantly coarser fragmentation was produced from a blast that used dynamite as the explosive charge. Fragment velocities were calculated using photographic data from the sixth test which was shot unrestrained in a quarry and filmed with high-speed cameras.

The dynamics of explosive detonations are understood, however recreating a real-world, full scale scenario is costly. The use of a shock-tunnel allows testing to be done on a smaller scale, with the simulated effect of a large explosion. Analyzing explosive waveforms using this method can greatly reduce cost in testing blast resistant products, such as anti-terrorism devices, mine safety products, and military equipment. The purpose of this paper is to better the understanding of how the waveform characteristics resulting from an explosive detonated within a shock-tunnel differ from those in an open-air arena test. The variables of comparison between an open-air arena test and those conducted within a shock tunnel are peak pressure, impulse, shock wave velocity, and cross sectional shape of the shock front. Understanding how these variables differ, tests utilizing a shock tunnel can be conducted with a higher degree of accuracy and repeatability.

H3 Tunnelers recently excavated two conventional 48 foot diameter highway tunnels through the Halawa side of the Tran-Koolau Mountains on Oahu. The primary blast design challenge on this Job was minimizing overbreak In the alternating layers of pahoehoe and aa lava, clinker, end tuff. Two different excavation techniques were evaluated in the Halawa tunnels. The first method used drilling and blasting to excavate the tunnels to within one foot of their final perimeter. A roadheader, mounted on a backhoe, was then used to excavate the remaining foot of ground. The second method used conventional smoothwall blasting techniques, without any mechanical excavation. This paper describes the details and relative success of the two excavation methods tried in the Halawa tunnels.

The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of close-in blasting effects on various types of structures and building materials, as encountered in this writer's professional practice. Structures range from old, deteriorated historical monuments to new, heavily reinforced buildings. Materials range from clay adobe to concrete and steel. Site locations range from tropical to arctic. Blasting ranges from sculpture blasting inside buildings to "coyote" blasting and large surface blasting operations. Space limitations permit a brief discussion of only 25-30 specific cases, but they have been selected to be typical of conditions found on hundreds of similar cases. The writer was asked to present a discussion of representative cases where relatively high vibration intensities were experienced. Virtually all of these cases were free of damage, but the few damage cases provide valuable insight to the mechanisms involved. Observations of such damage and non-damage cases have served as the basis of this writer's criteria for various structures and materials, as well as the technology to conduct blasting operations within those criteria. A sampling of these experiences is gladly shared with the reader.

In recent years, implementation of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning model technology has gained ground in almost every aspect of human activities. The mining industry has not been foreign to these applications, with advantages including the creation of new optimization methods and the elimination of repetitive tasks. Those applications have been implemented in multiple operative areas, from preventive conveyor belt maintenance to energy optimization for minimizing environmental impact. The blasting process aims to use the energy liberated by the detonation of explosives to break the rock mass according to specifications that facilitate the comminution process. To optimize this process, the energy delivered must correspond to the necessary amount to exceed the tensional and compressional resistance of the rock mass. If the energy applied is insufficient, the rock will not reach the desired fragmentation level and the processing plant may incur additional costs. On the other hand, if the energy level required is exceeded, we incur increased blasting costs that correspond to excess explosive used. Optimization of this aspect of the mining process has major impact in the processing chain reflected in lower costs, efficient resources consumption and environmental impact. The Design for Outcome technology (DfO), developed by Orica, is used to characterize the rock mass in detail to classify, borehole by borehole, the rock mass relative hardness to deliver the adequate energy level to achieve optimal fragmentation. This technology uses information collected by drill sensors, producing data typically referred to as Measure While Drilling (MWD) data to classify the rock mass into domains that can later be used to apply optimal blast designs. In DfO, the data flow is fully automated, starting with the data produced by the drilling system and uploaded to the cloud, which is then domained using Machine Learning (ML) techniques, and then published for consumption using a web interface. Automated explosives loading rules are then generated for each rock mass domain, ensuring that for each borehole, the adequate explosive energy is delivered to achieve the desired fragmentation results with unprecedented accuracy. The application of machine learning techniques allows us to optimize the blasting process results by leveraging a deeper understanding of the rock mass. Applying these optimization techniques, we obtain considerable economic benefits, decrease resources consumption, and achieve a more sustainable mining operation. The application of DfO in a Chilean mining operation allowed the characterization of their rock mass into four domains and established specific explosive loading rules for each one. A 60kUSD reduction in explosives cost was achieved during the test period, while maintaining the desired fragmentation results and expected dig rate. These outcomes were the result of a comparison between the blasting costs used applying the technology mentioned above and a “traditional” classification of the rock mass with the corresponding blasting practices.

With large destructive avalanches in transportation corridors, various States and Provinces have started implementing RACS into their summer construction projects to minimize traffic shutdowns. Since 2014 in North America, many of the projects are requiring the RACS deployment boxes to be removable by light duty helicopter for loading and summer storage. This is to further remove workers from the mountain tops, where inclement weather and Occupational Health and Safety concerns are widespread. We did not believe the method of flying primed charges under a helicopter was safe, so we developed a new charge container to deal with the issue.

With large destructive avalanches in transportation corridors, various States and Provinces have started implementing RACS into their summer construction projects to minimize traffic shutdowns. Since 2014 in North America, many of the projects are requiring the RACS deployment boxes to be removable by light duty helicopter for loading and summer storage. This is to further remove workers from the mountain tops, where inclement weather and Occupational Health and Safety concerns are widespread. We did not believe the method of flying primed charges under a helicopter was safe, so we developed a new charge container to deal with the issue. In spring of 2016, the Inauen Schatti company of Switzerland started the development of a flyable RACS deployment box to complement their 2 stand alone tower systems. To go along with the new flyable deployment box, a new S-Load charge carrier was developed. The newly developed and patented S-Load explosive charge for the LM32 RACS system features a mechanism which combines the explosive and priming material just before the blast. These are stored separately during transport and storage in the LM32 RACS deployment box. The S-load is divided into two parts. The upper part contains the plastic bobbin and ignition sequence (impact pull wire igniter, safety fuse and #8 blasting cap), whereby the explosive material and detonating cord are positioned in the lower part of the explosive container. The explosive material and ignition sequence are separated by a certified housing during transport and storage. The key idea of the S-Load system was to achieve a maximum level of safety by keeping the priming components separate from the explosive material until just before detonation. Because of this the S-Load and the LM32 tower remains safe during transport by helicopter or when being stored in the deployment box on the mountain side in the avalanche start zone.

Blasting conducted in rock temperatures greater than or equal to 55°C (13 1 “F) and / or in rock containing sulphide minerals and their oxidation products can result in unplanned detonations. Blasting practices involving the identification of the affected areas together with the use of speciality explosive products and rigorous attention to quality control are required to safely blast in these types of environments. Sulphide dust explosions occur in some underground mines where the primary blast results in a secondary explosion of the sulphide rock dust which propagates some distance from the primary blast area. This phenomena results in considerable damage and the generation of significant volumes of toxic gasses delaying re-entry to the affected area of the mine thereby increasing both costs and safety concerns. The exothermic reaction between ammonium nitrate based explosives and rock types containing partially oxidised sulphides have resulted in numerous high risk blasting incidents. These reactions can occur at ambient temperatures and often result in premature detonations / deflagrations causing a great deal of consternation at the affected minesite resulting in lost production and considerable expenditure to solve the problem. Rock masses at elevated temperatures can also result in unplanned detonations unless appropriate precautions are taken. This paper discusses each of these hazards, cites some case studies and details appropriate generic safe and efficient blasting techniques for each of the above applications using appropriately formulated explosive products.

Rio Tinto Bingham Canyon Mine started its South Wall Push Back (SPB) in 2011. This push back will mine through the only road to the pit bottom (the 10%). The pit bottom is the main ore sector for the mine and supplies about 80 to 90% of the ore. In late 2017 the mine set off a blast in SPB that created a small wedge failure on the high wall between SPB and the 10%. This wedge failure released a rock approximately 20 minutes after that blast that rolled down the wall landing on the 10% near and then contacting a light vehicle

Conventional blasting activities in the mining process use various types of explosives, with the primary raw materials being Ammonium Nitrate and diesel fuel. The quality and specifications of the two raw materials significantly affect the performance of explosives. One program from the Indonesian Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources requires mixing 30% Bio Diesel 30 with 70% diesel fuel oil in several industrial sectors, including mining, to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and stabilize CPO prices. This program aims very well for environmental sustainability and the palm oil business. However, it turns out that this change impacts the performance and results of the blasting process in the mining industry, which is the appearance of fumes. This paper will discuss the tests carried out in the laboratory on Bio Diesel 30, the explosive products used, and rock samples were taken from a mine in East Java, Indonesia. The aim is to determine what factors can cause fumes utilizing a mixture of Bio Diesel 30 with pure diesel fuel. The parameters tested were visual differences, infrared spectrometry, density and viscosity, surface tension and contact angle for Bio Diesel 30, stability test for explosives, and the SEM-EDS method for rock samples.
