"In many volcanogenic base metal deposits of Russia the gold is closely associated with copper sulphides and pyrite. The recovery of gold associated with pyrite is especially difficult problem.Investigations of gold chemical state and mineral forms in copper-zinc sulphide ores of Gay and Barsuchiy Log deposits in the Urals have been made using EPMA, optic image-analysis, XRA, SEM, thermo-electrical force measurements and selective gold leaching experiments.Two gold varieties are determined: 1) free native gold particles (from 5 µm up to 0,25-1,0 mm), which can be liberated after grinding of ore up to 0,074 µm and named “free gold”; 2)”invisible” gold, including finely disseminated native gold and chemically bound gold. The second variety can’t be disclosed during grinding. Free gold can be recovered by gravitation and flotation while the processing behaviour of “invisible” gold is determined by properties of gold-bearing sulphides: pyrite and chalcopyrite. According to results of diagnostic leaching experiments in ores of deposits mentioned above the part by weight of free gold reaches 70%, the part by weight of the ”invisible” gold is up to 20%. About 10% of gold is enclosed in quartz and acid-soluble minerals.Theoretically (taking into account gold distribution data) it’s may anticipate gold recovery by gravitation up to 60%. However after grinding up to 50-60% of class –0,074 mm only about 40% of gold passes into oversize product including 30% of free gold and 8% of ”invisible” one. It can be recovered by gravitation. Remaining free gold and ”invisible” gold can be extracted by flotation – 25% in total. Inevitable gold losses in tailings may reach 8-10%."

"During the conventional chromite dissolution process; chromite ore concentrates were ground to at least <90 µm using the ball mill and after adding Na2CO3 and leaning material (instead of CaCO3 also residues from the leaching process) at a ratio of e.g. 1:0.75:1.2, depending on the specific formulation, follows the digestion e.g. in a rotary kiln, heated in countercurrent. The reaction time is 3 to 8 h. The calcine is comminuted and leached with water or a thin chromate solution. Depending on the type of ore used, the yield is 75-85 %. The disadvantage of the above-described process is that it is impossible, using current technology, to achieve a complete digestion of the chromite ores and that the chromium-containing residues have to be disposed of as special waste, involving a large financial effort.The subject of this study was the investigation of the effect of vibratory milling on chromite dissolution. The impact stress in the vibratory mill causes the mechanical activation of chromite, which is characterised by lattice defects. The degree of mechanical activation can be quantified by measuring the relative X-ray diffraction intensities at the parent lattice planes of chromite. Each relative X-ray diffraction ratio correlates with a certain degree of digestion. As opposed to vibratory milling, a complete digestion of chromite using a ball mill is impossible, even at extremely long grinding times.In this investigation a chromite concentrate from Pulpinar/Kayseri with content of 44 % Cr2O3 and the Eccentric Vibratory Mill was used. In order to verify the effect of the vibrating grinding on chromite dissolution, reaction kinetic investigations on digestion and leaching were carried out."

"The Merensky Reef is a platinum group minerals (PGM) bearing reef in the Bushveld Igneous Complex in South Africa. The reef has been treated by bulk PGM and sulphide flotation with the aim of maximisingthe valuable minerals recovery and gangue minerals rejection.Synthetic water with a calcium concentration of 80 ppm and 500 ppm was prepared and the flotation results obtained were compared to a simple electrolyte in order to determine the effect water quality has on pentlandite and pyroxene surface alteration and, ultimately, floatability. During the study, the possible effect of interactions between the minerals investigated and Ca2+ ions in the presence of sodium isobutyl xanthate was studied at pH 6 and pH 9 by means of zeta potential determinations, microflotation tests and ToF-SIMS analysis.The results obtained on 1:1 pentlandite-pyroxene mixtures showed that the quality of process water plays an important role in flotation. The flotation recoveries of pentlandite and pyroxene were lower in synthetic process water compared to those obtained in a simple electrolyte solution."

Graphite, a mineral form of pure carbon, is one of the most versatile minerals in industry, because of its varying physical properties and characteristics. The mineral occurs naturally in the form of tubular crystals or microcrystalline earthy lumps, or it is disseminated in rocks, which have undergone intense metamorphism. India has a large deposition of graphite minerals out of which about 43% are found in Arunachal Pradesh. However, compared to the rest of the country, the North-East Region and particularly Arunachal Pradesh has not attracted attention till date for detail investigation for characterization, beneficiation, prospecting and/or exploitation of the mineral resources including graphite. Bulk graphite sample were collected from upper Subanshiri district of Arunachal Pradesh. Chemical analysis of the representative samples were carried out and found that 7.29%, 19.60% and 6.07% of fixed carbon (FC) is present in graphite sample collected from La-Lamdak, Bopi and Taliha, Arunachal Pradesh, respectively. Chemical analysis of the ash of the graphite sample shows presence of impurities such as silica, Al2O3, Fe2O3, Ca, Mg etc in the graphite sample which are also supported by XRD and SEM-EDX investigation. The graphite samples of Arunachal Pradesh are low grade and do not fulfill the market requirement for the industrial applications. Therefore, low-grade graphite is subjected to beneficiation for the upgradation of the graphite for industrial applications. We have adopted the dispersion?cum-settling technique for the beneficiation of the graphite sample collected from Arunachal Pradesh. The FC of 40.21% with 41.17% raw graphite recovery which is equivalent to 71.02% carbon recovery have been obtained by gravity separation technique using only distilled water without any chemical reagent in case of graphite sample collected from Bopi, Arunachal Pradesh. The graphite sample is upgraded up to 47.75% FC with 41.91% raw graphite recovery, which is equivalent to 85.85% carbon recovery with the pH adjustment at 9 with NaOH. Ore concentration processes are a function of the respective particle size distribution; however, most of them do not use an efficient operational method to determine it. From a practical point of view, the surface area can be calculated for any size analysis. The physical principles for determining the size distribution in each method are different, for the results will not be compared directly. During the development of the research project of the sulfide ore flotation method using inert gas, different methods for calculating the specific surface area have been used, such as sieving, sedimentation/X-ray, laser diffraction and BET, i.e. specific techniques to determine the specific surface area of copper and gold ore concentrates. The statistical method of minimum squares was used to achieve practical correlation equations among them. Regarding these two ores, if one knows a specific surface area value using one of the methods above, one can predict the result of the others. Diminution of the reagent consumption was so controlled and it could be even decreased by using inert gas.

The production of phosphate concentrates (phosphate rock) from slimes represents a challenge to the phosphate industry worldwide. In Brazil, this challenge is particularly relevant due to the consistently low P2O5 grades and the igneous origin. The Brazilian phosphate deposits are made up mainly of apatite from alkaline chimneys, representing 80% of the Brazilian reserves; phosphorite deposits contribute 18% and the other sources (guano, phosphorous bauxite, and apatite from veins) reach 2%. The Brazilian industry beneficiates phosphate ores that are mineralogically more complex than those treated elsewhere. The low apatite grade, inherent to the igneous Brazilian ores, added to the mineralogical complexity due to the weathering of the rocks, has represented a permanent challenge to the Brazilian process engineers. The total measured, indicated and inferred reserves reach 3.2 million tonnes of ore with average grade 11% P2O5. The development of local technology for phosphate beneficiation started in the 1960’s. The first industrial experiences of producing phosphate rock from slimes (-44µm or -325#) fraction started at Arafertil, currently Bunge Fertilizantes SA, in Araxá, in the 1980’s. This production corresponds, nowadays, to 35% of the total production of concentrates in the company (830,000t/year) in a circuit consisting of desliming in 40mm microcyclones and concentration in flotation columns, corn starch and fatty acids being utilised as reagents. The performance of slimes flotation and the process control, at Bunge´s concentrator, were improved after the introduction of column flotation technology, in the first half of the nineties. The column flotation technology for slimes recovery was expanded to other Brazilian concentrators still in the nineties: Ultrafértil (Catalão – GO), Bunge (Cajati – SP), Fosfértil (Tapira – MG) and Copebrás (Catalão – GO). At present the Brazilian production of phosphate rock is approximately 4.5Mt/year, with a strong trend for a market increase. Genuinely Brazilian technology is utilised for the processing of slimes, the concentrates representing 11 to 13% of the overall production. The production of apatite concentrates from slimes was relevant to increase phosphate recovery and reduce costs, contributing to the growth of the fertilisers industry.

South African is a repository of significant deposits of a variety of minerals. The Citigroup confirms this assertion with an estimate of in-situ valuation of US$2.5 Trillion. The mining sector plays an important role in the South African economy. In addition to the mineral resource base South Africa has other comparative advantages. Firstly, South Africa retains major mining companies that participate globally, including Anglo American, Goldfields and De Beers. Their global involvement offers much to the local mining sector and the broader economy. Secondly, government established research councils. The Council for Geoscience (CGS) was established to manage the Geological Survey of South Africa, including the reduction of geo-scientific investment risk. The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) promotes industrial development, including mining technology development. Mintek undertakes mineral research from mineral examination of ores, to extraction and refining technologies and manufacture of end products. Thirdly, South African universities teach and conduct research along the mineral value chain. They have increased their minerals graduates? capacity, thus advancing knowledge and skills. Knowledge and technical progress are behind productivity growth and emergence of competitive advantage. The research and development (R&D) capabilities of industry, science councils and universities, working in unison, will enhance the competitiveness of the South African mining industry. The National System of Innovation (NSI) requires multi-disciplinary, collaborative research. Key R&D elements, including skills and expertise, funding and facilities, must be available to implement a long-term national strategy or programme. Improved international collaboration and partnerships between government, academia and industry driven human resource development (HRD), ultimately develop the critical mass for inter-generational skills requirements. This trend requires an expansion of research collaboration programmes. Decisions involving investments and collaborative actions pertaining to R&D in the sector necessitate an analysis of the South African mineral value chain R&D capability. This paper analyses the evolution of R&D capability from exploration to refining, tertiary education, science councils and industry. The political economy of the evolution of this capability is analyzed in relation to the central role that the South African government plays in creating an appropriate supporting environment and related initiatives to enhance R&D and innovation. "Research at Delft University aims to develop systems for automatic inspection and sorting of bulk solids which can be applied in the mineral processing and recycling industry. A recent development includes an automatic sorter based on airport X-ray inspection technology. It is designed for continuous inspection and sorting of 5 – 150 mm solids and has as objective a cost effective and high capacity on-line inspection and sorting.Dual energy X-ray transmission imaging provides instantaneous data about particle dimensions and the atomic number distribution. The system provides particle thickness and average atomic number on a pixel level at scanning speeds between 250 and 500 lines / second. With existing X-ray components inspection speeds between 0.5 and 2 m/s at approximately 1-meter inspection width and between 1.5*1.5 and 5*5 mm2 sensor resolution can be achieved.Imaging algorithms that were developed by Delft University for applications in recycling, waste cleaning and other applications acquire shape, size distribution and composition data. Currently on-line processing of a product at a rate of around 200 particles per second is possible using a standard PC. Experiments with a demonstration X-ray unit indicated good potential for various applications in solids processing. They include continuous inspection of organic content, sulphur, chlorine, ash, and metal distribution. It is applicable for coal cleaning, ore sorting, industrial minerals, and various applications within waste cleaning and recycling. "Separation in Froth (SIF) is a process for the separation of mineral particles during their descent downwards through a moving froth layer, generated on the surface of water or some other liquid media by means of a bubble generator and frother. Due to the special operation principles of SIF it is possible to separate mineral particles that are about 10 times coarser than the optimal particle size for conventional flotation. In this paper the performance of the SIF technique is presented in the separation of apatite, calcite and silicate minerals from various industrial sources, based on tests with laboratory and pilot plant-scale SIF machines. Basic laboratory test results of the flotation of pure diamonds are also presented.It was shown that calcite, apatite and diamonds with particle size up to about 3 mm can be successfully floated with SIF at high recovery and grade, provided that the degree of liberation is sufficiently high. Coarse calcite (+0.25-2.8 mm) was concentrated with reverse SIF in one flotation step at 87% recovery with better than 99% grade. Apatite particles coarser than 0.2 mm are not well floated in the conventional flotation circuit leading to high P2O5 content in the coarse size fractions of flotation tailings. On the contrary, SIF is capable of recovering such coarse particles at high recovery. However, P2O5 content of the SIF tailings starts to increase at about 0.7 mm due to insufficient liberation of apatite. At higher particle size the lack of hydrophobicity of apatite particles is also likely to lower the recovery.The pilot plant testwork showed that SIF can be successfully used at operating plants not only for preliminary upgrading of the feed of conventional flotation, but also for producing final grade calcite concentrate (>99.5%) from the screen overflow or from the cyclone underflow in a particle size range up to 1 mm. It was particularly promising that the separation took place in one SIF flotation step, instead of several stages of the conventional flotation circuit, with over 90% calcite recovery. The specific capacity determined with the 1 m2 pilot plant unit was approximately 30 t/m2h. Simultaneously the consumption of chemicals was significantly lower than for conventional flotation."

"Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is gaining increasing acceptance as a decision-support tool by which to evaluate the environmental performance of a product, process or service. This is evidenced by its inclusion in international policy documents (for example in the European Union’s Integrated Product Policy) and in environmental management standards (the ISO 14 040 series of environmental management codes relate to LCA). In response to this, the minerals industry has conducted a number of commodity-specific LCAs. These include studies for global production of a number of commodities including copper, nickel, aluminium and steel. In addition, a number of minerals companies profess to use LCA as part of their suite of project and technology assessment tools. Often, this collected use represents more a situation of “we do this because we’re told it’s good for business” rather than from any demonstrable evidence of this fact. This has led to a situation of much confusion and disillusionment within the industry, exacerbated by the obvious current limitations of LCA to accurately reflect the environmental performance of minerals and metals.Our point of departure here is that LCA, conforming as it does to the tenets of environmental systems analysis, is a valuable starting point, and that there is merit in exploring to what extent the methodology can be enhanced to better reflect the environmental performance of minerals and metals. Specifically, we explore here the further development of LCA to address the following:• Land Use issues• Consumption of Abiotic Resources including metallic and non-metallic minerals, water and soil)• Human and Eco-toxicity issues relating to mobility and bio-availability of metals• Salinityand address these through selected experimental and simulation case studies relating to energy- and base minerals production. Advances resulting from the United Nations Environment Programme/Society for Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry Life Cycle Initiative are presented in that they directly affect the application of LCA to mining, minerals and metals. Comments are offered on how best the mining and minerals industry might interface with future developments resulting from this Initiative in order that the Initiative can deliver outcomes which render LCA a useful tool for decision making in mining and minerals processing."

"Research projects towards developing a sound understanding of the factors controlling the performance of gravity thickeners have been conducted by the AJ Parker Cooperative Research Centre for Hydrometallurgy since 1988 through AMIRA International. The current phase of this work, the three year P266D “Improving Thickener Technology” project, has 27 sponsors comprising mineral processing companies, reagent suppliers and thickener manufacturers.These projects have resulted in the development of a range of tools and techniques to address flocculation, thickening and associated dewatering issues. A number of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) models have been developed to predict likely full-scale thickener performance under various process conditions, based upon a knowledge of thickener design, plant flows and assessment of the flocculation behaviour of the feed slurry. At the same time, various laboratory and plant studies have been used to quantify important thickener processes, and to provide validation of the CFD models. These numerical and experimental capabilities have been applied to various thickener issues across a broad range of mineral processing operations, leading to significant process improvements and substantial financial benefits.This paper presents an overview of the work conducted during these projects, focussing on the research tools, the nature of the information that has been gained and the implications for thickener performance."

"BHP Billiton carried out a pre-feasibility study on the LanPing zinc deposit to evaluate the possibility to jointly develop the zinc deposit into a large-scale zinc project with their Chinese partner. The unique characteristics of the complex LanPing zinc orebody and ore are 1) smithsonite (ZnCO3) as one of major zinc bearing mineral besides sphalerite, 2) varying and irregular oxidation degree of zinc (0 ~ +90%) in the different zone and depth of the deposit, and 3) varying host gangue from limestone/calcite dominant to quartz dominant, which requires a robust and flexible flotation process to recovery zinc from both sulphide and oxide efficiently.The conventional mineral processing flowsheets have been tested on the LanPing samples taken from the various orebodies by various parties during the past 20 years that includes a sequential flotation flowsheet that was tested in a demonstration plant using the mixed ore. The results of the demonstration plant runs show that the conventional oxide flotation using Na2S and amine collectors could achieve 50 ~ 75% of oxide zinc recovery at very high sulphidiser consumption for the mixed ore but the highly oxidised ore did not satisfactorily respond to the flowsheet in terms of performance consistency and efficiency of oxide zinc recovery, which is very crucial to the overall economics of the project."

A novel process is developed in this study for separation of tungsten and vanadium from a leach solution of tungsten alloy scraps. Specifically, a magnesium salt combined ammonium solution is employed to precipitate vanadium and impurities in the purification of the leach solution. This separates vanadium from tungsten by rejecting tungsten in aqueous solution. Finally, tungsten is recovered as the form of ammonium para-tungstate (APT). Vanadium is recovered as the form of ammonium meta-vanadate(AMV).

"To enable the prediction of reagents suitable for fine coal flotation, it is necessary to develop a methodology applicable to different South African coal types. Statistical confirmation of the applicability of this methodology is important to avoid recommendation of reagents on a trial and error basis.The study included 5 coal samples from different collieries and included Highveld seam 3 and 4 coal (as one sample), Waterberg coal (zone 10 -11), Highveld seam 5 upper coal and Witbank seam 2 and seam 4 coal. Seam 3 and 4 (mixture) coal, Waterberg and the seam 5 upper coal were all found to be vitrinite rich coals. The coal characterisation study included petrographic analysis, proximate analysis, float-sink analysis, oxygen-containing functional groups, surface extraction, flotation release analysis and contact angle measurements. Flotation tests were used to validate expectations from the characterisation of the coal samples.RESULTSThe flotation data indicated that all of the coal samples were amendable to froth flotation. The best results were obtained with the Witbank seam 2 coal and the poorest flotation with Syferfontein seam 5 coal. The flotation tests showed that the best reagents to float all of the coal samples studied were iso-decanol and dodecene. These reagents produced flotation products that were near to the release curve, which are the optimum flotation results (obtained when using iso-paraffin as collector). Dodecene resulted in low ash products and iso-decanol in high yield products."

"The Western Cape Mineral Processing Facility (WCMPF) is a collaborative educational initiative between the Departments of Chemical Engineering of the University of Cape Town, the University of Stellenbosch and the Cape Technikon. The primary objective of the WCMPF is to facilitate the education, development and graduation of suitably qualified engineering graduates and diplomates for the mining industry. The WCMPF consists of academics and Technical Officers in the Departments of Chemical Engineering of the three tertiary institutions. The Technical Officers are usually metallurgists, with several years of industrial experience. The main objective of the Technical Officers is to improve the practical education of mineral processing students. In addition, the Technical Officers are responsible for organising an annual mineral processing student field trip for students from all three tertiary educational institutions. In recent years the WCMPF has embarked on a number of additional initiatives aimed at improving the quality of mineral processing education. These include the development of several new pilot plant practicals, an initiative in pyrometallurgy, the introduction of novel ‘end to end’ or ‘integrated’ practicals and the use of mineral processing simulation packages to complement the practical training.The WCMPF has been functioning for well over a decade and, by virtue of this, might be considered a successful collaborative educational initiative. The WCMPF has played a key role in the education of over five hundred mineral processing graduates and diplomates. During this time period, the WCMPF has gained a body of internal knowledge which might be of benefit to other educational institutions, viz."

"The cyclone would have a claim to be the commonest, least understood and most abused piece of mineral processing equipment available for study by researchers. It has certainly generated its fair share of publications – 1,000 in the last 60 years would be a fair estimate. However this remarkable degree of interest and scale of investigation is not reflected in our understanding of how they work; cyclones are still installed inappropriately and run poorly, which suggests that there are still things to learn about this deceptively simple process.In mineral processing there are two broad classes of cyclone: the hydrocyclone, used in classification, thickening and dewatering, and the dense medium cyclone, used for concentration by density. Although rarely studied together, the laws of physics presumably apply equally to both and so it seems that there would be interesting things to learn by considering them as a single class of device. The good news is that in recent years there have been spectacular advances in the computational and measurement tools available to study these devices, including computational fluid dynamics (CFD), tomography, and laser doppler anemometry (LDA), and some good progress has been made in an understanding of the fundamental principles involved.The JKMRC has made many experimental studies of hydrocyclones and DM cyclones, leading to useful empirical models. However some recent CFD and tomographic work, in association with work of other institutions, has thrown important light on the workings of these processes. Progress has also been made in novel designs of cyclone to achieve improved separating efficiency, based on an attack on the subprocesses believed to contribute to inefficient operation. This paper describes the work to date.Modelling of the dense medium and classifying cyclone was conducted using the Fluent computational fluid dynamics code. Three phase simulations of the dense medium application (air/water/medium) showed appropriate medium segregation effects but over-predicted the level of segregation compared to segregation measured by gamma-ray tomography. This is believed to be because the basic Algebraic Slip mixture model in Fluent does not model any back-mixing of the dispersed phase due to turbulence."

"Agglomeration of fine iron ore concentrates is carried out in two steps:Balling, which refers to the production of green pellets by tumbling moist fines powders in drums, discs, or cones, and Induration, which refers to the subsequent thermal treatment of the green pellets in straight grate or grate-kiln systems.This paper addresses computer simulation of balling or green pelletization step. The process of agglomeration from a mechanistic point of view can be described as the transformation of moist feed to well-formed species or pellets. The moist feed is composed of fines of infinitesimal size while well-formed species are of finite size and number. These well-formed species undergo changes in their size and number through different mechanisms of agglomerate formation and growth. Nucleation, coalescence and layering are the three main mechanisms that describe the formation and growth of granules during an agglomeration process. A population balance equation enables quantitative description of the evolution of agglomerate size distribution due to the occurrence of each of the mechanisms.A numerical solution for the population balance model is necessary and is obtained by the use of a sizediscretization approach. The numerical solutions provide a suitable basis for the analysis of the agglomeration process. Also a coalescence kernel has been introduced that is capable of describing the simultaneous occurrence of nucleation, coalescence and layering mechanisms. The effect of feed moisture has been described using a moisture factor with an exponential functional dependence on the moisture content. The effect of the feed to seed ratio is modelled by the introduction of a crowding factor. It was assumed that only the feed particles which are much more in number experience a crowding or restricted in space interactions effect. A computer simulation program has been developed with MATLAB as the simulation language."

"In water treatment, flocculation or coagulation with aluminium or ferric salts has been widely used for many years to remove natural organic matter (NOM), including humic acids. However, the adsorption of NOM to aluminium hydroxide flocs during conventional coagulation/flocculation processes is very complex, with the flocculation of aluminium hydroxide particles and the adsorption of NOM molecules on flocs occurring simultaneously. Any effect on the surface characteristics and micro-structures of the humic acids and aluminium hydroxides could affect the adsorption efficiency.It has been widely observed that if a reaction system (liquid-liquid or liquid-solid) is exposed to an ultrasound field, under appropriate conditions, a variety of physical (emulsification, aggregation/flocculation) or chemical (the production of radical and exited species; single electrotransfer) actions may be activated. Though the ultrasound effects have been used in biological and chemical decontamination in many conventional environmental protection practices, the idea to explore the ultrasound effects in the removal of humic acids by preformed aluminium hydroxide flocs is relatively new. In this paper, the effect of an in-situ ultrasonication on removal of the humic acids extracted from the acidification fermentation of lignocellulosic residues, by a preformed aluminium hydroxide, was evaluated; the effect of ultrasonication on the surface complexation of the humic acids with the preformed aluminium hydroxides was investigated."

"Gravity separation by centrifugal equipment, particularly in the mineral processing industry is a novel approach of optimising product recovery. The manufacture and sale of centrifugal equipment by recently established companies is now beginning to have a significant impact on the industry. Some benefits of operating at increased gravity include: reduced environmental issues, a shorter lead time, lower capital cost and improved recoveries of elemental mineral before entering the grinding circuit.Of topical discussion is the use of centrifugal separators for the recovery of less valuable minerals that will form a greater proportion of the feed compared to traditional scalping circuits where the gold content is extremely low. This ultimately results in the centrifugal system having to have a greater mass pull. In addition, the relative density difference between gangue and valuable mineral is likely to be less and therefore modelling and optimisation of this separation process will be necessary. Some researchers have muted using fluidisation models to model the forces present in the separation zone of a centrifugal separator2. It is not unusual for the manufactures of centrifugal separation equipment to use fluidisation terminology to describe what happens in the separation zone. Most fluidisation models are based on the empirical/classic relationship between superficial fluid velocity and voidage postulated by Richardson and Zaki. However, no researcher has proved the effectiveness of this relationship in an increased gravity Environment."

In the process of thickening dewatering_the motion state of two- phase flow in a thickener has a very great influence on thickening efficiency. The investigation was made using copper mill tailings. In this investigation the authors explored the formation conditions and motion range of density current in the thickening process by model experiments, and analyzed the influence of density current on thickening efficiency. The results have shown that the formation of density current has relations with the structure parameters of a thickener and thickening process. The density current and its forming location affect thickener’s working efficiency. The author measured the motion state of two- phase flow in a 53-m dial. thickener for copper mill tailings under its operation conditions and analyzed the density distribution and motion state of two-phase flow in the thickener. The results obtained by the industry tests have shown that the motion state of two- phase flow in the thickener can be greatly improved by modification of its structure, achieving a great improvement in its thickening efficiency. It is concluded that, a thickener’s working efficiency depends on the formation and motion range of density current in it, which is of great importance to designing and establishment of thickener’s working parameters.
