"Slag foaming occurs in several pyrometallurgical processes. These processes include steelmaking in basic oxygen steelmaking furnaces and electric arc furnaces as well as various non-ferrous operations like sulphide smelting/converting and base metal slag cleaning. Although slag foaming in steelmaking processes has been extensively researched, little attention has been given to slag foaming in non-ferrous operations. Slag foaming phenomena are complex because often the system consists of three or more phases. With this in mind, factors previously identified as influencing slag foaming were investigated. These include the slag basicity, physical properties of the slag, namely viscosity, surface tension and density, the formation of particles due to undercooling of the slag and the FexO concentration in the slag.Slag foaming was investigated in a vertical tube furnace. The different slags were contained in alumina crucibles and bubbling argon gas through the molten slag induced foaming. The foam height was measured by using stainless steel probes and a voltmeter. The conductivity of the slags made it possible to measure the foam height from the position of the probes when the electrical circuit was completed. Slags were foamed at different temperatures to investigate the effect of solid precipitates.The effect of increasing FexO concentration was found to decrease the foam index due to lower viscosities, but higher surface tension depression appears to have led to increased foam index values at high FexO concentrations."

"Movement of mill charge in the centrifugal mill is essentially dissimilar from that in the vibration mill with circular path despite the apparently similar mode in the motion of mill body. This dissimilarity is the reason for the substantial advantage regarding the comminution intensity of the centrifugal mill over the conventional vibration mill accounting approximately to one order of magnitude.Bradley et al. (1983) developed a math model regarding the mill charge as a lump. This model is presented in a simple equation with which motion of the mill charge can be predicted in terms of the parameters describing the specification and the operation of the centrifugal mill. This equation can be used to explain the power draft of the mill as well as the stability of mill operation. More recently, on the other hand, a numerical simulation technology called discrete element method (DEM) has become a vital vehicle for estimating the motion of the grinding media in the mill. The authors developed a mill simulator called ‘Mill Solver’. Mill Solver is designed to simulate various types of mills including centrifugal and vibration mills. The principle of this simulator is to calculate individual kinetic events of interaction of balls in the mill in a minute time interval, hence the mill performance can be constructed for estimation."

The application of centrifugal separation methods with the use of gravity concentrators has been assigned high priority while gold-containing minerals processing. The separation proceeds under centrifugal force resulted from the rotor spinning and wash water flow in the concentrators. The high specific gravity particles are retained at the trapping surface of the cone, and the low specific gravity particles are brought in the tailings. The centrifugal field in such concentrators (Knelson, Falcon) is generated by the rotating cone provoking the swirling of the free fed slurry flow. The author investigated the regularities of the separation process in the centrifugal gravity concentrator where a two-phase flow of the separated mineral media is under the pulsed pressure of the fluidization water and air. As a result of the study the possibility of the deeper penetration of the fine heavy fraction into the cone rings, providing the fluctuation of the fluidization water or air flow, was theoretically argued and experimentally proved. This allows the increase of the separation performance at low pulsation costs. The developed mathematical models are in close conformity with the actual process of interest and they enable the prediction of the heavy phase behavior at the isolated process stages in the concentrator. Crushing plants are widely used around the world as a pre-processing step in the mineral and mining industries and as standalone processing plants in the aggregates industry. Despite automation and different advanced model predictive control, a lot of the process is still managed by operators. The operators affect a lot of the performance. The numbers of the improvement they can achieve are at least as big as the advanced control algorithms?, today. Therefore, it is also important to train the operators so they know how to behave in different situations. Models for crushers and other production units have been developed during the years and the latest add is the different units? dynamic behavior being brought in, which gives the crushing plants dynamic time dependant performance. This can be used as a simulator for operators training. By connecting a Human Machine Interface (HMI) to a dynamic simulator with the models incorporated, a training environment for operators can be achieved. In this paper, a dynamic crushing plant simulator implemented in MATLAB/SIMULINK has been connected to an HMI via a PLC. The HMI is placed in a control room at the university and complemented with monitors showing sequences from the process connected to the simulations, thus creating a realistic control room for training. In the created training environment, the operators can be trained under realistic conditions. Simple training scenarios and how they could be simulated are discussed. Apart from the increased level of knowledge and experience among the operators, the time is an important factor. While a real crushing plant is still being built, the operators to be can already be trained, saving a lot of the commissioning time. "This paper addresses the need for advanced control technologies and strategies in the mining industry, its potential and actual impact on mining processes and the best practices for their implementation, operation, and long term sustainability. It is well known that advanced process control (APC) can be a very good source for incremental process improvement for the mining industry, yielding to higher production rates or helping maintain consistent production rates despite ore changes. The application and integration of new technology, process knowledge and innovation are key elements in building such a supporting structure. More specifically, and this cannot be emphasized enough, the correct application and assembly of control tools, the in-time presentation of key data to decision makers and the development of relevant statistics and KPI’s (key performance indicators) can and will make a difference not only in terms of production, but also in plant stability, availability and production costs. In deploying such ideas and aiming at the long-term goal of "Operational Excellence", Minera Los Pelambres (MLP) has developed a number of successful control strategies, best practices and technologies, which are not only the application of state-of-the-art automation and computing tools, but rather the assembly of the above presented structuring factors. This work discusses some of the key tools and ideas implemented for SAG & Ball milling and Flotation areas, their performance results and the roadmap taken for the integration of process knowledge and control tools. Also, cases studies are presented and discussed further to not only show the main areas of improvement, but also to highlight the benefits of such strategy that for the most part, deviate from the traditional mining industry control approach. Also, a word is given on the need for innovating in the design of control strategies and leveraging best practices and process knowledge that ultimately, will contribute to long-term reliable operations, improved mineral processing and, although unmeasured, lead to a superior overall performance and productivity of all mining personnel involved."
