Copper minerals present difficulties during the cyanide leaching of gold ores leading to excessively high consumption of cyanide (and oxygen) coupled with low extraction of gold. Copper cyanide species, if present at high levels, adversely affects the downstream processes such as the activated carbon adsorption and the effluent treatment. In this study, the extraction of gold from a copper-bearing gold ore by ammoniacal cyanide leaching was studied. Furthermore, ammonia leaching as a pretreatment process ahead of cyanide leaching was also examined. Only ~12% of gold was extracted by direct cyanide leaching of the ore. The addition of lead nitrate did not affect the leaching of gold. When ammoniacal cyanide leaching system was used, the extraction of gold was significantly improved to >90%. Similarly, the pretreatment of the ore by ammonia leaching was shown to lead to high gold extractions (98%), in subsequent cyanide leaching with significant reductions in the consumption of cyanide. This appeared to be linked with the ready dissolution/removal of copper during ammonia leaching.

The research on selecting of an efficient technology of pyrite cinders complex treatment, sulfuric acid production wastes, have been made. The grades in the initial product were 2.04 g Au/t, 35.0 g Ag /t, 0.38%Cu, 1.1% Zn. Laboratory tests on cyanide technology, thiourea and sulphite leaching were carried out. Magnetic and flotation beneficiation and biohydrometallurgical technology were tested. After considering the results of the tests, the most economically efficient technology of pyrite cinders complex treatment with cyanide leaching of precious metals was determined. The technology involves water washing of soluble copper and zinc compounds, lime treatment and cyanide leaching of gold and silver, detoxification and utilization of mineral wastes. The precious metals are recovered from solutions by cementation onto zinc. Copper is recovered from rinse waters by SW/EW and then zinc is precipitated as hydroxide. All the solutions and organic agent are used in recirculation and therefore the technology is practically waste-free. Mineral wastes can be used as iron-containing materials for cement industry. The technology has been tested in pilot-plant scale under continuous operation with complete re-circulation of cyanide solutions. In this process recovery of 54% Au, 45% Ag, 30% Cu and 50% Zn has been achieved.

Discrete Element Method (DEM) is extensively used to simulate the behaviour of particles in various processing units. This method is based on modelling the forces acting between particles in any contact and consequently calculating the new position of particles. The high number of elements and numerous equations needed have made the required computation time very long even using computers with very fast processors. The required computation time mainly depends on the time step. If the time step is chosen very short, the computation time will significantly increase. On the other hand, if the time step is chosen very long, the simulation will be in error due to not fully observing the contacts. In DEM calculations, the time step is chosen as a fraction of the collision time. In this research, a relationship was proposed between the contact time fraction and the error of simulation. In other words, to select the time step in addition to physical parameters, the accuracy of the simulation was also accommodated in the frequently-used relationships. The simulation error was defined as the relative difference between the initial restitution coefficient and the restitution coefficient obtained after simulation. The required time steps to arrive at the simulation error of 5% were calculated for two common contact force models namely, Hertz-Mindlin and linear spring-dashpot. The simulation was performed for two particles with radius of 3 cm, elasticity modulus of 210 GPa, Poisson's ratio of 0.3 and relative velocity of 0.5 m/s. The required time steps were found to be 2.3 and 0.19 µs for the Hertz-Mindlin and the linear spring-dashpot contact force models, respectively. Results showed that with a scaling-down the modulus from 210 GPa to 2.1 MPa, the required time steps for the Hertz-Mindlin and the linear spring-dashpot contact force models, with an equal simulation error, increased by 100 and 316 times, respectively.

"Bentonite clay has been the traditional binder for iron ore pellets. However, bentonite increases pellets’ silica contents and is expensive. Researchers have proposed lowering bentonite doses by mixing it with other common binders. These mixtures may only be successful if the fundamental bonding mechanisms are understood. For example, what happens when bentonite (physical bonding) is mixed with fly-ash (chemical bonding)? What happens when bentonite is mixed with cornstarch (physical bonding)? In this paper, experiments are described where bentonite was mixed with various ratios of cornstarch and fly-ash, and pellets were agglomerated using 0.66 % w/w binder. Ca(OH)2 and CaCl2 were added as activator and accelerator, respectively, to the bentonite-fly ash mixture. Curves of pellet dry strength vs. bentonite-starch ratio were linear, suggesting the physical-physical bonding mechanisms were compatible - acceptable strengths (> 22 N) were produced at all bentonite-to-starch ratios. This was contrary to bentonite-fly ash mixtures, which displayed dry strength curves with a noticeable minimum due to competing binding mechanisms. Bentonite alone and fly ash alone produced acceptable strengths (> 22 N), but their mixtures resulted in weak pellets. Due to the positive results using cornstarch (CS) binders, the effects of CS solubility in water were investigated using two CS with high and low solubility (60 and 7.5 %). CS was premixed with bentonite at various ratios (0, 20, 40, 60, 80, 100 %). Pellets were agglomerated using 0.66 % w/w binder. The dry strength of pellets ranged from 50-300 N using the high solubility CS mixtures, and from 50-85 N using the low solubility CS mixtures. Fired strengths exceeded 2200 N/pellet at all bentonite-cornstarch ratios. This research showed that cornstarch solubility is an important factor in determining its effectiveness as a binder for iron ore concentrates, but significant work is still necessary before it can be used as a bentonite replacement."

"Ferrous iron oxidation kinetics was measured in continuous culture at temperatures between 65 and 75ºC, using thermophilic microbes suitable for high temperature bioleaching. The resulting specific oxidation rates were modelled as a function of the ferric/ferrous iron ratio. The results were compared to those obtained by conventional mesophilic microbes.Microbially mediated ferrous iron oxidation is a vital sub-process in the mesophilic bioleaching of sulfide minerals and is expected to be of similar importance at elevated temperatures using thermophilicmicrobes.A thermophilic archaeal culture used in chalcopyrite bioleaching was successfully grown in continuous culture on ferrous sulfate, indicating the capability of the microbes to sustain growth for long periods on the energy provided by the conversion of ferrous iron to ferric iron, the primary leaching agent in sulfide mineral bioleaching.Steady state data was obtained at residence times of between 70 and 10 hours, with washout occurring at residence times between 11 and 9 hours, corresponding to a maximum growth rate (µmax) of between 0.09 and 0.11 hr-1. The reactions were followed by measurements of the solution redox potential, soluble iron concentrations, and offgas analysis of the oxygen and carbon dioxide utilisation rates."

The paper presents the results of research on the development of gold recovery technology from oxidized gold-copper ore of one of deposits in Russian Federation. Gold and copper grades in the ore are 9.5 g/t and 0.4%, respectively. Various options of flowsheets, such as direct cyanidation, thiourea leaching, flotation and gravity concentration followed by subsequent cyanidation of con-centration products, were tested. It was established that gravity-cyanidation technology with filtra-tion leaching tails and the use of solutions in the recirculation is the optimal option for ore treatment. The proposed flowsheet provides gold recovery for 91.0% at NaCN consumption 2.5 kg/t ac-cording to the results of pilot testing. Ammonia-cyanide gold leaching was also examined. In comparison with cyanidation, gold leaching solution in system NaCN-NH4OH-(NH4)2CO3 allows NaCN consumption to be reduced three times from 4.5 kg to 1.5 kg per 1 ton of the ore and provides the same gold recovery. Based on the laboratory and pilot plant tests results of gravity-cyanidation technology of gold dissolution, process design criteria were developed.

The criteria for designing a crushing chamber are presented and a program for designing the shape of the chamber is proposed. During the chamber shape design, major design parameters are analyzed first, optimized parameters are determined next and the basic shape of chamber is figured out finally. In the basic chamber design program, the influence of abrasion of basic chamber shape and material characteristic are not accounted for usually. Here, based on the minimum abrasion of chamber shape and uniform particle size theory, the equation for chamber surface curve and the transcending function were formulated and a low-abrasion chamber was designed. Since the chamber shape designed based on experience and experiments is not necessarily the best, optimal design of the crushing chamber shape was carried out. Cubic spline function was used to represent the chamber shape curve and a mathematical model was formulated. The optimal shape solution was obtained using a complex method. Finally, the optimal chamber shape was determined by matching the moving cone stroke S, moving cone speed N and the moving cone bottom angle Thus, superior technical performance of the cone chamber was achieved.

The status of utilization of copper ore resources, and the application and development of biohydrometallury technology in the world is reviewed. Based on the characterization of Zambia?s copper resources, biohydrometallurgy technology is shown to be a practical approach to extract and utilize the enormous low grade copper resource, such as ore tailings and low grade copper ore in this country. Through the cooperation of CSU, China and MMMD, Zambia, ?CNMC-CSU Demonstration Base of Biohydrometallurgy Technology in Zambia? was launched and several biohydrometallurgy plants are being constructed. This indicates that the biohdyrometallurgy technology would be applied soon in Zambia and in the whole Africa. Biohydrometallurgy technology stands as an efficient alternative to the traditional pyrometallurgy process and it can be the key to unlock mineral resources value. The treatment of placer gold with fine gold, associated with gold-bearing sulfide minerals, heavy minerals and oxidized minerals such as manganowolframite (gubnerite) is not an easy task. In this case, this complex material cannot be treated using physical separation methods such as deep concentration and finishing, magnetic separation and solvent extraction. This technology is usually employed in gold washings finishing plant. The easiest way to recover precious metals in the form of an easy-to-sample saleable product is metallurgical treatment. This paper describes the application of pyrometallurgical processes with oxidative roasting, re-cleaning of cinders (if required) and ore-thermal smelting for producing gold bullion. Hydrometallurgical treatment of slags as an additional operation is recommended in order to maximize recovery of valuable metals. After this treatment, a barren leaching cake rich in PGM can be sold in the market. PGM can be collected as gold-silver alloy during smelting which allows the phase formation of polymetallic matte due to specific composition of fluxes. The PGM are then in the form of saleable gold bullions in the refinery.

The paper presents the modeling and simulation experience in field of research into the mineral row material separation. Features of the subject domain generate a need of different approaches using for modeling and simulation. The general scheme of separation modeling process and some examples of developed simulators are presented. Due to different features and standards of knowledge, different formal models should be used to describe and analyze separation processes in the frame of general scheme. The main types of simulators are modeling tools based on statistical, analytical or expert (logical) methods. Advantages and disadvantages of each method above are mentioned in the paper. Based on the studies in the field considered, an aggregated mathematical model of a separation process has been generated. The aggregated model is presented by two combined equations. The actual apparatus model is formed by substitution of the particular functional expressions of the forces acting in the apparatus into the aggregated model. The developed simulation tools are based on integration of limited experimental data and on ex-pert knowledge available on separation processes. Simulation does not allow producing an optimal, in terms of mathematics, solution. But it gives an opportunity to produce and compare quite adequate solution variants in real time. The results obtained are the theoretical and methodological base for integrated information technologies to support studies in the field of mineral processing.

Consistency of Run-Off-Mine (ROM) quality plays an important role in mineral processing which is not very often talked about. The major impediment is limitation of sampling ROM ore, which makes processing plants to run without any realtime feedback on ore quality that comes in. The process of direct determination of Run-Off-Mine (ROM) ore quality is expensive and time consuming as drawing and preparing representative samples from blasted muckpiles are constrained by large sample size and inherent heterogeneity in terms of size and chemistry. In absence of techniques for direct measurement of quality, monitoring and control of ROM, feed to the processing plant at Joda East Mine, like all other iron ore beneficiation plants worldwide, is largely based on blasthole sampling and subsequent chemical analyses of blastcone chips. While such indirect methods proves to be more accurate for representing whole of a mining block or blasted muckpile (~30-50KT/blast), it is indeed a challenge to ascertain and predict day to day input quality for a part there off. This eventually leads to a gap between predicted and actual ROM quality, resulting in difficulties in process control, in turn, and leading to wide swings in product quality. Hence, it is imperative to bridge the gap between predicted and actual ROM quality by arriving at means, which ensure consistent plant feed grade to deliver consistent output. The paper discusses an efficient and affordable alternative for effective prediction of ROM alumina which has been developed by integrating blasthole quality database in GPS based Truck Dispatch System (GPS-TDS) at Joda East Mine. Initially, GPS-TDS has been installed for optimizing production parameters only, but this development has helped in further utilization of GPS-TDS for real time quality monitoring by improving ROM grade prediction and scheduling from several ore blocks in active mining areas. A new sensor based sorting system related to complex image analysis has been developed at Comex AS - Norway. It makes it possible to separate different mineral particles regarding their color, shape, texture, size, density and indirectly their composition. The sorting system has been successfully tested and applied for sorting minerals providing high separation efficiency in the range of 95-99.9 %. The main advantage of this system is connected with its universality where many material parameters are analyzed in the same processing unit by a single passage.

Thiosulfate leaching has been considered as the most promising alternative to cyanidation for the recovery of gold from ores. The chemistry of the ammonia-thiosulfate-copper system is complicated due to the simultaneous presence of complexing ligands such as ammonia and thiosulfate, the Cu(II)-CU(I) redox couple and the stability of thiosulfate in solution. However, acceptable gold leaching rates can be achieved by maintaining suitable concentrations of thiosulfate, ammonia, cop-per and oxygen in the leach solution. The leaching of gold in thiosulfate solution is an electrochemical reaction involving the oxidation of gold to gold thiosulfate and the reduction of Cu(II) to Cu(I). Previous studies have shown that the reaction rate of gold was much higher in the presence of am-monia thiosulfate than corresponding sodium thiosulfate. This indicates that cations may affect the anodic oxidation of gold in thiosulfate solution. The present study utilises electrochemical tech-niques to study the anodic oxidation of gold in thiosulfate medium in the presence of the different alkali metal and alkaline earth metal ions. It has been shown that the presence of the heavier cations such as potassium, calcium, and caesium enhance the oxidation of gold in thiosulfate solution. Leaching tests also indicated the improved recovery of gold from a sulfide ore with the addition of heavier cations. XPS results demonstrated that the binding energy for gold shifted to lower values in the presence of the heavier cations, indicating the ready formation of ion-pair with gold thiosulfate at the gold surface during adsorption.

The ball level and pulp load play a key role in the operation of industrial scale ball mills. These two operating variables have a significant influence on the performance of the ball mill and any attempts to optimize these devices require manipulating either one or both of these variables. There are several models that can be employed to perform simulations to optimize the performance of industrial ball mills. However, most of these models require ball load and pulp load measurements as inputs to calibrate the model. The changes suggested by the simulator also provide operating regimes that involve moving either the ball level or pulp load and sometimes both of these variables. A ball mill model coded in JKSimMet was used in conjunction with the Sensomag to optimize the secondary ball mill at Waterval concentrator in South Africa. The results show that the perfect mixing ball mill model can be used in conjunction with the Sensomag to optimize the performance of the secondary ball mill.

"Reducing the amount of zinc and iron in lead concentrate is one of the important aspects of processing in lead and zinc flotation plants which results in improvement of lead concentrate quality and prevents zinc loss. In mineral flotation industries, lignin sulfonates are known for their depressant properties for both non-metallic and sulfide minerals such as pyrite and pyrrhotite.This paper investigates the effect of lignin sulfonate on flotation of galena, sphalerite and pyrite in sulfidic lead and zinc bearing ores. Batch flotation tests were carried out on a high pre-activated zinc samples. The feed contains 0.9% lead, 2.3% zinc and 7.5% iron. The dosage of all reagents such as sodium cyanide, zinc sulfate, ethyl xanthate and methyl isobutyl carbinol (MIBC) were kept constant for lead flotation step except calcium lignin sulfonate (CLS) that was varied between 0 and 80 gr/ton.Results for lead rougher concentrate showed that the grade of lead increased by 2.7% while the recovery decreased around 4 % at the highest dosage of CLS. Furthermore, zinc recovery decreased by 6.3% with no significant change in grade. Iron recovery in lead rougher concentrate decreased by 2.3 % while the grade changed around 1%. In sphalerite flotation step, CLS dosage was changed in the range of 0 to 80 gr/ton while the dosage of other reagents such as copper sulfate, lime, amil xanthate and MIBC were kept constant. In this step, no decreasing in grade and recovery of zinc was observed, while iron recovery decreased. It was suggested that CLS has a depression effect on sphalerite in conjunction with other zinc depressants such as zinc sulfate and sodium cyanide. CLS was further used in plant with non-pre-activated zinc minerals. Mining operations offer many opportunities for the use of IT and communication technologies to improve automation and thereby deliver higher levels of productivity, cost, quality and safety. In this paper, we discuss a particular application, namely, building a fully automated train control and operation system within a mining area. We first outline the basic architecture and functionality of such a system and then present a real-life case study where the railway system within a remote iron ore mine in Canada was converted to a fully automated train operation system. This hard real-time safety-critical system required the use of advanced technologies such as embedded systems (e.g., on-board train controller), radio communications, formal methods, optimal scheduling, and extensive simulations. We focus on the design aspects for maintaining the system in safe states.

N-Methyl-2-pyrollidone (NMP) has already been proven a good solvent for extraction of coal. It is believed that organic components of coal are likely to be dissolved with the solvolytic power of NMP. During dissolution process, original coal also gets disintegrated and thus helps in further extraction. Coal extraction highly depends on temperature, coal to solvent ratio, N-Methyl-2-pyrollidone (NMP) to Ethylenediamine (EDA) ratio and the size of coal particles. The process has been established in the laboratory. There is no reference available beyond lab scale. In present study, we are running a bench scale plant with 40 kg/batch capacity. Design of experiment was done in such a way that the optimum zone of the process gets evaluated for clean coal having low ash with high yield. Bench scale plant trial was conducted based on optimum zone developed during design of experiments (DOE). From the DOE analysis it was observed that feed size and coal to solvent ratio are important parameters for this process. Total 27 experiments (four factors with 3 level of variation) were designed through Box-Behnken model. It was observed that -0.5 mm feed size of coal, 150 °C extraction temperature, 17:1 NMP to EDA ratio, 1:9 coal to solvent ratio was optimum conditions. The results obtained at optimum conditions are 50% clean coal yield with 5% ash.

The theory on particles displacement subjected to upwards and settling movements in water, using a water pulse, is described in literature, but very little experimental data is available to verify these theoretical ideas. The aim of this research work was to visualize the displacement of solid particles in a mixture of water and solid particles created with the aid of water pulses in the Mineral Density Separator. From the literature it is known that lighter particles are subjected to higher levels of displacement than heavier particles, and when the particles then settled down, layers of material are formed ac-cording to the densities of the material. By removing the individual material layers, the materials can then be separated according to their densities. During this study the individual material layers were investigated regarding the density and size distribution in that specific density layer. It is important for this project to have a statistical prediction of the ?real? flow of the particles with different density and size distribution, inside the Mineral Density Separator. The information gathered during this study will be used to show the correlation between a two dimensional model of the particle flow and that of the real three dimensional flow inside the Mineral Density Separator.

"Platinum Australia Limited (“PLA”) is currently undertaking a Feasibility Study into the development of the Panton Platinum Palladium Project located in the Kimberley region of Western Australia. The Panton Intrusive is a layered, differentiated mafic to ultramafic structurally complex body that has undergone numerous folding and faulting events. This has resulted in a southwesterly plunging synclinal structure some 10 kilometres in length and 3 kilometres wide.High grade PGM mineralisation is hosted within a number of stratiform chromitite reefs within the ultramafic sequence. The focus of the Feasibility Study is on the Top Reef which is situated approximately 150 metres below the mafic/ultramafic interface. The average true width of this reef is approximately 1.2 metres and the reef has a defined resource is 10.1 million tonnes at an average grade of 6.1 g/t PGM + Au.The Palladium to Platinum ratio of the Top Reef is approximately 1.15:1 and the reef also contains an average of 0.4 g/t Au and 0.3 g/t other PGM’s. The Panton ore is considered refractory in nature and standard flotation techniques achieve a PGM + Au recovery of less than 65% with a concentrate grade of less than 100 g/t PGM + Au. As part of the Feasibility Study Platinum Australia in conjunction with their major shareholder Lonmin Plc developed a new metallurgical process which has achieved an overall PGM + Au recovery of approximately 80% into a high grade PGM concentrate which is suitable for feeding direct to a PGM refinery.THE PANTON PROCESSThe Panton Process incorporates a two-stage Milling and Flotation circuit with no cleaning stages to produce a low grade, high recovery flotation concentrate. Typically the concentrate mass constitutes 25% of the feed and has a PGM + Au grade of 25 g/t.This low-grade concentrate is subjected to calcination in a rotary kiln or fluid bed at a temperature of approximately 400 0C for a period of 60 minutes. This step is designed to render the platinum minerals soluble in cyanide and both the temperature and the duration of calcination are critical to the efficiency of the leaching process."

The flotation performance of kaolinite in laboratory micro-flotation was investigated with 3- (dodecyloxy) propan-1-amine (ON12) as the collector. Compared with dode cylamine (DDA), which is commonly used as the bauxite reverse flotation collector, ON12 shows stronger collecting ability for kaolinite than using the same amounts of DDA, when experimental pH value reaches more than 6. With the addition of ON12, the isoelectric point of kaolinite shifts to 6.1 from 3.6, which suggests a strong adsorption between kaolinite and ON12. Infrared spectra analysis indicates that the type of ON12 adsorbed on the kaolinite surface is mainly of electrostatic adsorption. Molecular dynamics simulation further indicate that electrostatic adsorption of ON12 cation on kaolinite (001) surface based on electrostatic interaction between NH4+ and O atoms. ON12 will be suitable for bauxite reverse flotation with the efficiency depressors of the diaspora.
