Recently, the Korean government prepared a strategy for deep seabed mining, which consists of three stages for 20 years until 2010. The first step of the program is focused to conduct deep seabed exploration until 1993. The apparent "hurry-and-spend to catch-up" policy that the Korean government has shown in deep seabed mineral exploration was motivated by an effort to qualify a prerequisite requirement to be a pioneer investor as a developing country under the terms of Resolution II and the New York Understanding. Since 1983, KORDI (Korea Ocean Research and Development Institute) under the auspices of the Korean government has carried out deep seabed mineral exploration. The KORDI had a joint exploration program with USGS from 1989 to 1991 aiming to evaluate the potentiality of manganese nodule in the western part of Clarion-Clipperton Zone as well as that of manganese crusts in the western Pacific. In 1992, Korean government accelerates its program by the confirmation of national policy and the equipment of new built research vessel, Onnuri-Ho. The RIV Onnuri-Ho is about 1400 G/T, which is equipped with various advanced instruments including GPS, multi-beam echosounder (Seabeam 2000), multi-channel seismic system, and MDM system.

The elucidation of the theory of plate tectonics has provided a conceptual framework for understanding the formation and distribution of different types of ore deposits. For example, we now recognize that certain kinds of mineral deposits are generally associated with a particular type of plate boundary (i.e., massive sulfides often occur along divergent plate boundaries, whereas porphyry copper deposits are typically found along convergent boundaries). During certain geologic time periods, plate reorganization events have changed the relative proportion of different types of plate boundaries. Corresponding changes have been observed in the abundance and distribution of ores deposited during these times. The present study examines the temporal aspects of this relationship; i.e., do plate reorganization events play an active or passive role in ore formation? In other words, do plate reorganizations simply provide a more favorable tectonic setting in which ore formation can occur over significant time periods, or are they directly linked to the mineralization process? We have examined this question by comparing regional tectonic histories with the ages of known massive sulfide and porphyry copper deposits. Because these deposits, in particular massive sulfides, form as a result of hydrothermal activity, we have also compared regional tectonic histories with proxy indicators of this process in the marine sedimentary record. These indicators include increased mass accumulation rates of Ca, Fe, Mn, and opal, characteristic changes in the Sr/Ca and Mg/Ca ratios of biogenous carbonates, and shoaling of the carbonate compenstion

The University of New South Wales Mining Research Centre (UMRC) has a longstanding research reputation in mining research, with particular expertise in mining systems, mining geomechanics and excavation engineering. The UMRC is now focusing this expertise on the potential of mining Seafloor Massive Sulphides (SMS). The UMRC has initiated a three-year research project that will identify and examine the requirements to effectively and efficiently mine SMS deposits. The major aims of this project are: ? To develop an understanding of the geomechanical characteristics and local physical environmental conditions associated with a ?typical? SMS deposit. ? To develop and evaluate a range of both conventional and innovative excavation processes for mining SMS deposits, and define the engineering parameters required for each extraction option, and ? To identify the materials handling and lifting requirements of the ?mined? SMS material, and the possible integration of the lifting system with the excavation processes considered.

In September-October 2002, shallow seafloor drilling using the 5 m-Rockdrill of the British Geological Survey and the German R/V Sonne has revealed critical information on the sub-surface nature of two distinct hydrothermal systems in the New Ireland fore-arc and the Manus Basin of Papua New Guinea. Drilling at the summit plateau of Conical Seamount (39 holes, 31 % recovery) south of Lihir Island in the central New Ireland fore-arc has confirmed the sub-seafloor extend of previously discovered surface gold mineralization (up to 230 g/t Au) and associated alteration to a depth of at least 4.5 m below the seafloor and further proven analogies to the giant Ladolam epithermal gold deposit on Lihir Island. Drill core samples of clay-silica alteration contain average gold grades up to 14.2 g/t Au over a length of about 30 cm (fire assay Lihir Gold Ltd. laboratory) and appear to be part of a more extensive gold zone located below a carapace of relatively fresh ancaramitic and trachybasalt. These samples contain a complex mineralogy including realgar, orpiment, galena, sphalerite, some chalcopyrite and pyrite, together with amorphous silica, and possibly cinnabar. In addition to high concentrations of gold, shipboard analyses indicate that the gold-rich samples contain high values of Pb, As, and Sb, which is a characteristic feature of a magmatic-hydrothermal style of mineralization and alteration.

Managing sediment plumes under multiple jurisdictions Management of activities in the New Zealand EEZ can be characterized as a distributed basis of decision-making with each independent and separate decision-maker focused on specific elements of a proposal (environmental, work place safety, wildlife management, fisheries, navigation, oil spill). The New Zealand EEZ Act 2012 was intended as gap-filling legislation to address the lack of an environmental assessment lens for permissions to undertake certain activities in the New Zealand EEZ. These activities relate mostly to marine scientific research, dumping and discharges, oil and gas exploration and development, and seabed mining. The regulatory decision-maker for most EEZ Act marine consents is the New Zealand EPA. Since 2013 when this gap-filling legislation took effect, the EPA and its decision- making committees have processed three seabed mining applications. Two consents were refused, one consent was granted in 2017. A common feature of all consents has been the assessment and consideration of the scale, significance and effects of sediment plumes arising from the activity. One consent is for irons and mining in about 40m of water where the plumes reach the nearby coastal waters and shoreline, the second consent is far offshore but plumes extend far beyond the mining area (850 km2) in to rare coral habitats and in to a significant offshore fishery. A significant consideration for decision-makers is how the assessment and management of plumes under the EEZ Act interact with, and potentially overlap, management of such plumes under other legislation (Resource Management Act, Marine Mammals Protection Act, and Wildlife Act). This is in a statutory context where the EEZ Act requires explicit consideration of the nature and effect of other marine management regimes over the matter under consideration.

Processing of polymetallic nodules poses several challenges to metallurgists. These include the presence of at least 80 elements in nodule, presence of Ni, Cu, Co in no specific mineral form, presence of almost 30 % seawater in freshly collected nodule, and collection of slime along with the nodule. For almost 40 years, several research groups from all over the world are engaged in developing an appropriate process to extract metals from poly-metallic nodule. These processes have been tested in scales varying from few grams to several hundred kilograms (Das, 2001; Jandova, 2001). All these tests helped in defining various parameters for processing, and simultaneously brought out some of the inherent problems of processing nodules. Based on the information and the experience of all these studies, in recent years, most research groups, involved in developing metallurgical processes for nodule, are focusing their efforts in two or three alternative directions. While attempts are made to overcome some of the major challenges in processing, several new ones crop up. The difficulties are further compounded because no mining system is operating to generate some of the data required for process development. The aim of this presentation is to highlight the research efforts, and to identify areas requiring special attention of a process developer.

INTRODUCTION High tellurium contents in the ancient volcanogenic massive sulfides (VMS) and modern seafloor massive sulfides (SMS) have been reported by V.Maslennikov (Maslennikov et al., 2013). However findings of tellurium minerals in SMS are rather rare. The only reported coloradoite and bi-melonite, have been found in massive sulfides from Rainbow hydrothermal field (Fouquet, 2010). Here we present data about Te - minerals in sulfide chimneys of different ages (up to 84.7 kyr - Cherkashov et al., 2010 ) from Semyenov-2 hydrothermal field. The obtained results The Semyenov hydrothermal cluster was discovered and studied in the course of cruises 30 and 32 of R/V Professor Logachev (2007 and 2009) at 13º31´ N, MAR. This area is associated with an oceanic core complex and associated with serpentinized gabbro- peridotites and basalts. Plagiogranites and tonalites have been dredged on seafloor in the Semyenov cluster area (Cherkashov et al., 2013; Pertsev et al., 2012). In total, 25 sulfides samples have been studied. The major and minor mineralogical phases were identified using reflected light microscope. Major element compositions of ore- forming minerals were analyzed on a Hitachi S3400N scanning electron microscope at the Geomodel Center, St. Petersburg State University (St. Petersburg, Russia) with an AzTec Energy 350 (EDX) detector and an INCA 500 (WDX) detector.

In a commercial effort to characterize deep seabed manganese deposits in the Clarion-Clipperton region of the northeastern tropical Pacific, Ocean Mineral s Company carried out 16 expeditions to the region between -1978 and 1981. During these cruises OMCO collected substantial data. Activities included acoustic profiling, video and photographic imaging of the seabed, and sampling of the deposits with dredges, box cores and free-fall grab samplers. In 1990 the samples, photographs, technical reports and computer data bases which resulted from this work were archived at the Marine Minerals Technology Center at the University of Hawaii. This preliminary examination of the collection focuses on the biological observations made from almost 10,000 photographs of the seabed and the manganese nodule size distributions and compositional data from the free-fall grab recoveries. Regional trends are evident in all three data types. The biological examinations of the seabed photographs show significant geographical trends, with greater abundances of organisms being noted in the northeastern extreme of the region, decreasing toward the southwest (11.4 to 2.7 observations per 100 m2; 460 to 190 g per 100 m2). The nodule size distributions suggest that the ratio of the nodule burial rates to growth rates systematically decreases over the same range (0.65 to 0.36 nodules buried per 1 cm of growth). INTRODUCTION The last decade has given rise to an increasing number of deep-sea mining concepts (DSMCs) outlining technical solutions for the production chain from seafloor mining to mineral or metal extraction. The vast technological and logistical challenges coupled with immature but rapidly evolving technology has spawned a great variety in proposed concepts, and the exact implications of the phrase ‘best available technology’ is very much an open question. DSMCs differ significantly with respect to choice of technology, technological readiness level, degree of resource utilization, logistics, OPEX and CAPEX requirements, overall profitability, legal and political implications, not to mention environmental impact. Hence, a system for classifying concepts could provide a useful identification and structuring tool when performing economic, judicial or environmental assessments of DSMCs, as well as offering a general terminology to describe concepts sharing fundamental traits. This abstract proposes a DSMC classification system based on how a concept makes use of mineral separation at the different stages in the ore’s journey from the deposit to the ocean surface and ultimately to onshore facilities. Mineral separation, as a process step, is the key factor in determining both the state and mass flow of materials along the production chain and has, as such, a decisive effect on economy and environmental impact of any deep-sea mining project. A DSMC that is based on bringing the entire volume of broken ore to onshore facilities for processing will look very different from a concept based on pre-concentration (i.e. mineral separation) at the seafloor. Whereas the latter offers savings in the form of reduced energy cost for vertical transport, it also represents a substantial additional technological challenge. Furthermore, whether or not a concept relies on mineral processing at the seafloor or on a floating facility at the ocean surface above the deposit also determines the point at which mineral separation waste (i.e. tailings) must be managed. Different concepts offer different opportunities for tailings deposition, and are at the same time bound by different requirements.

"This study presents the first catalogue of marine mineral deposits and energy resources along the continental margin of Spain. Aggregates, oil and gas and metalliferous mineral areas have been defined and mapped. The catalogue, implemented in a geographic information system (GIS), is conceived as a first national database within the European network, which is being built as part of the EMODnet-Geology project. It comprises 8 types of mineral and energy resources for the Spanish margins: aggregates, hydrocarbons, evaporites, placer deposits, phosphorites, polymetallic sulfides, polymetallic nodules and cobalt-rich ferromanganese crusts (Figures 1 and 2). The catalogue stores a total of 409 marine mineral deposits and compiles information such as name, deposit type, main morphology, main minerals, setting or area extent for each mineral deposit. By number of deposits compiled, the aggregates are the most abundant (286) followed by hydrocarbons (62), cobalt-rich ferromanganese crusts (32), evaporites (9), placer deposits (8), phosphorites (5), polymetallic nodules (4) and polymetallic sulphide deposits (3). Considering the total extension, hydrocarbons (32,386 km2) and cobalt-rich ferromanganese crusts (24,951 km2) represent the biggest areas.The Geological Survey of Spain (IGME) is developing a new tool in the catalogue, according the International Seabed Authority (ISA) Database parameters, for individual samples on each ferromanganese deposit. The database includes an extensive collection of records that comprise five information groups: general cruise and sample data, physical properties, mineralogy, geochemistry and acronyms used. New attributes have been incorporated, in example: geophysical, sedimentological and petrological data in the deposit area, sample weight, porosity, morphology, textural and structural features, geochemistry of major, minor and trace elements (included REEs and PGEs) and supplementary cruise and laboratory reports. This new database complements the EMODnet-Geology project minerals catalogue, offering a deeper level of information for the areas with major potential for mineral or energy resources as they are the Canary Island Seamount Province, the West Margin of Galicia and the Gulf of Cadiz."

In the past marine mining technology has focused on bulk mining of base metals from polymetallic massive sulfides. This has not been very successful because of the relatively low unit value of these metals and other reasons such as water depth, etc.. The process of gold enrichment in hydrothermal deposits is controlled through five different factors: (1) nature and source of the solution, (2) source of the gold, (3) a mechanism for mobilizing and transporting, (4) a mechanism for deposition, and (5) a mechanism to preserve the deposit. Gold has been identified in marine polymetallic massive sulfides from various locations on the ocean floor (e.g., spreading centers, seamounts) with contents ranging up to 5 ppm Au. This is within the current range of 1.0 to 7.0 ppm gold content which classifies gold ores. The gold appears to have been derived during hydrothermal alteration of the oceanic crust. Until the present there has been little attention to the possibility of mining gold or other precious metals in the marine environment. However, the magnitude of hydrothermal alteration (seawater can penetrates to a depth of 5 km into the oceanic crust) and primary gold contents of the rocks in the pathway of the fluid indicates that major gold deposits must have formed on or in the ocean floor, but they have not been found. To find a big deposit might only take an exploration model exclusively designed for gold exploration on the ocean floor.

The need for improved, high confidence estimates of nodule abundance to support mine permitting, detailed mine planning and mining and processing equipment design is evident. To date, physical samples represent the ?Gold Standard? for nodule abundance measurement, and are likely to remain as such. However, there are some interesting improvements in the area of 3-D scanning which, if marinized for operations at 6000m, may prove to be reliable alternative methods for mapping abundance over large areas particularly if calibrated or benchmarked with physical sample data. . Features of a high confidence physical sampling device, such as the 0.75m2 (0.86m on a side) box corer developed and successfully used by the Kennecott Group for exploration in the CCZ, take into account not only the accuracy in nodule sample collection but a host of other operability considerations which can mean the difference between a successful exploration cruise yielding high numbers of large area samples and one in which few, inaccurate, often inconclusive samples are collected (or, even worse, the sampler fails to grab any nodules for any number of reasons). The collection of physical samples at appropriate spacing within a mine area combined with more qualitative indications of nodule density such as can be obtained using acoustic backscatter should prove adequate for the near term objectives related to overall abundance appraisal or estimates of ?indicated? resource. Looking ahead, exploration cruises will need to yield increasing amounts of data to support development of higher confidence resource abundance estimates to support issuance of mining permits and detailed design of mining plans and equipment. Occurrence of hydrogenetic ferromanganese crusts has been well documented over inactive seamounts in the central and southern Pacific Ocean. It has been thus believed that the hydrogenetic crusts develop preferentially at water depths between about 800 to 2500 meters. In fact, according to the Manganese Crust Database (F. Manheim, 1988), only two occurrences are known at water depths below 5000 m out of 819 occurrences cited in the database. Unexpectedly, we found typical hydrogenetic ferromanganese crusts from deep-sea floors; 1) outcropping old volcanic basement over the Philippine Sea Plate (abandoned spreading centers and subducting old oceanic crusts) and 2) one from the slope of an abyssal hill in the Central Pacific Basin (Cretaceous deep-sea basin) at water depths ranging between 5200 to 6100 meters. We report their occurrences with submersible observations from Shinkai 6K, physical parameters (such as thickness of crusts about 2-4 cm in maximum), chemical composition, petrology of substrate, and results of Be-10 dating for some samples in comparison with typical Co-rich manganese crusts from the Central Pacific seamounts. The preliminary chemical and mineralogical analyses reveal that they are of typical hydrogenetic origin, and typical of iron-manganese oxide mineral, vernadite, slow and probably continuous growth, and lower content of Co than the Central Pacific seamount crusts. The occurrences and nature of the crusts indicate that deep-sea floors are also optimal for the growth of hydrogenetic crust even at 5000 m water depth or deeper, only if oxygenated deep waters are supplied and the sea-floor morphology keeps stable enough for significant geological time period. "With the growing global demand for strategic metals, commodity prices are rising and the scarcity of some metals is increasing. Europe’s technology sector is also affected by this growing shortage of metals. Securing the supply of critical metals is now a major element in Europe’s economic strategy. The Blue Mining and Blue Nodules projects have been initiated to principally advance deep sea mining technology beyond current TRL-levels.These critical metals are found inside so-called “polymetallic nodules”, lying on the seafloor in deep-sea environment. These nodules have a typical abundance of 10-25 kg/m2 and a size range of 10-125 mm.Harvesting the polymetallic nodules is challenging. Two main methods of harvesting or collector equipment are distinguished: hydraulic and mechanical. Over the last year, Royal IHC has designed, build and tested a full-scale hydraulic collector. Meanwhile, a mechanical collector is being developed.First, a scaled version of the hydraulic collector was developed and tested in order to have a proof of principle. The development as well as optimization were aided by multiphase CFD simulations."

NAUTILUS MINERALS is a leader in the commercial exploration for and evaluation of seafloor massive sulfide (?SMS?) deposits. Nautilus has exploration licences covering 15,000 sq km of seafloor in Papua New Guinea and is evaluating other areas in the Western Pacific. The Nautilus Western Pacific Gold-Copper project is an interesting case study of the interaction of the disciplines of Science, Engineering and Environmental Science to solve and attend to the challenges of a project without precedence. The Science books of geology and marine biology with respect to seafloor massive sulfides are still being written or at best are thin volumes with recognition still we know very little at this time. Science?s early discoveries and study of these mineral processes on the seafloor provided invaluable data from which to develop an exploration strategy and the genesis of Nautilus itself. The Engineering required for development of such deposits is a combination of yet to be tested ?theory and engineering principles? and adaptation of best practice from other fields such as oil/gas and telecommunication cable laying. The Environmental guidelines for exploring these deposits, let alone mining them, is at the moment still being debated by a panel of experts chosen by the International Seabed Authority.

Are hydrothermal emissions from subduction-related volcanic arcs important to the total hydrothermal burden of the oceans? While historical observations of hydrothermal venting of fluids at mid-ocean ridgecrests, intra-plate hotspots, and backarc spreading centers are numerous, we remain poorly informed regarding the contributions from hydrothermal systems associated with oceanic submarine arcs. Here we report the chemical results from the first systematic assessment for hydrothermal activity at an intra-oceanic arc front. We discovered that 7 of the 13 submarine volcanoes that define a 260-km-long segment of the southern Kermadec arc north of New Zealand are hydrothermally active. Most significant here is that the chemical compositions of the various hydrothermal systems, inferred from back-extrapolation of observations of hydrothermal plumes, are diverse, and in many instances enriched in the concentrations of gases (e.g., CO2 and H2S) and metals (e.g., Fe and Mn) compared to effluents commonly discharged from mid-ocean ridges. If our results are generally representative of submarine arcs, whose global extent may equal one-third that of ridgecrests, the answer to our leading question could be a resounding yes in terms of both volume and chemical composition.

"Lifting of slurry from the seabed mining machine to the surface production vessel is a critical element of any deepwater seabed mining system. A Vertical Transport System (VTS) comprises pump(s), riser string, connectors and hang-off assembly as its main components, but it is the pipe material, riser configuration and installation method that often attract the most discussions.This presentation will feature important VTS design work 2H has done over the years for different stakeholders, and highlight the work carried out as a partner to the EU funded Blue Mining Joint Industry Project.The key challenges faced by a deepwater VTS are:??High riser payload??Large deck space for storing riser joints??Long time to deploy and retrieve riser??Uncertain metocean conditions??Vortex induced vibrations??Weld and connector fatigueIncreasing the water depth further sees the longer and increasingly ‘springy’ riser experiencing axial resonance caused by wave induced vessel heave motions being close to the riser resonant period. This can lead to snatch loading and fatigue failure in the riser.The presentation will discuss the above design issues, analysis requirements and provide guidance on pump/riser selection. Solutions to mitigate the resonant response issues will also be proposed.."

Gas Hydrates (Methane Hydrates) are solid, ice-like substances composed of water and natural gas. They occur naturally in areas of the world where methane and water combine at appropriate conditions of temperature and pressure and are found in ocean bottom sediments and in some permafrost areas. Besides temperature and pressure, factors like bathymetry, sediment thickness, sedimentation rates, and total organic carbon content (TOC) also control gas hydrate formation in the ocean basins. The stability of gas hydrates depends on the critical combination of high pressure and low temperature (0 - 17 bars, 0 - 25°C), which in turn is dependent on the mix of gases from which the mineral is formed. As the critical parameters can be altered by deposition, erosion, slumping, formation or melting of ice cover, rise and fall of sea level, and sudden temperature changes induced by tectonic activities, current flow, or volcanisms, the gas hydrates tend to be very unstable. The Indian offshore is promising for the occurrence of gas hydrates in a total of about 80,000 km2 area in the bathymetry range of 700 to 3000 m as reported in earlier surveys. A gas hydrate stability zone thickness map was prepared using bathymetry and sea bottom temperatures along the continental margins of India. This map is expected to provide the depth window while searching for Bottom Simulating Reflectors (BSR). The study indicates that a minimum water depth of 750 m is required for the formation of gas hydrates, above which the chances for gas hydrate occurrence appear minimal despite other favorable conditions like organic-rich sediments, etc. Single-channel seismic analog records (Gupta et al., 1998) indicate that the Western Continental Margin of India (WCMI) offers a greater promise for gas hydrate occurrences, particularly with regard to the number of BSRs traced on the analog records as compared to earlier surveys.

Active development of the exploration and further exploitation of deep-sea minerals requires special emphasis on the protection of the marine environment. The complexity of this subject lies in the fact that potential impact and effects of future mining activity are not completely known. One of the main sources of potential impact near the seafloor, as it expected, would be a generation of sediment plumes, their dispersion and redeposition of sediment. Meanwhile, their dimensions, rates of dispersion and redeposition are a big issue. Other plumes are expected in the surface layer as a result of discharges of processing waters and particles after sorting on board of mining vessel, and their features are also not clear. At the same time, understanding of these aspects would be crucial for definition of environment impact area, delineation and designation of different types of protected areas (Areas of Particular Environmental Interest, Impact and Preservation Reference Zones) and future assessment of environmental impacts. Attempts to address these issues demonstrated wide variations between the data of field experiments on the one hand and the results of analytical and numerical models on the other. According to in situ measurements, plumes were detected at a distance vary from one to less than 20 km [e.g., Burns et al., 1980; Sharma et al., 2001; Nautilus Minerals, 2008 etc.], whilst some models show results up to 100 km [Rolinski S. et al., 2001] and more. It seemed that results of in-situ experiments are preferable, but they were not many indeed. However, these data were used in different investigations rather widely, but their focus, as far as we know, was not on the matters related directly with plumes.

In June of 2013, Odyssey Marine Exploration conducted sea trials of the newly installed SeaBat 7150 full-ocean multibeam sonar system on the M/V Dorado Discovery over the Fierberling Guyot in the northeast Pacific Ocean. Fieberling Guyot is located approximately 990 kilometers west of San Diego, California and it rises abruptly from the deep ocean floor (~4300 meters) to a minimum depth of approximately 438 meters. The SeaBat 7150 operates at two distinct frequencies, 24 kHz (shallow to 3000 meters) and 12 kHz (full-ocean depth greater than 2000 meters). Onboard operational data are managed by a suite of state-of-the-art software. A SQL Server 2012 database provides the highly specific management and visualization tools as ArcGIS 10, Micromine 2013, and Geobank 2013 database.
