The new ship-submersible system with R/V Ka'imikai-o-Kanaloa as a mothership and the PISCES V as the submersible completed its first season of dives. The dives involved deployment of the PISCES V in the Hawaiian Islands between the months of July and October 1996. Submersible deployments up to depths of 2,000 meters in sea states up to a high three were made. The new hook and clasp deployment and retrieval connection for PISCES V to the telearm was shown to be an effective system for handling the PISCES V with the A-frame. The shipboard multibeam survey and seawater sampling capability proved to be especially effective in re-mapping the summit of the submarine volcano Loihi following a major volcano-tectonic event and for following the source and configuration of the new hydrothermal plume. Following the earthquake swarm of July 17 to August 18,1996, major changes in the geological setting of Loihi submarine volcano took place. Prior to the seismic event, the geology and structure of the summit of Loihi was represented by a platform-like area 8,100 meters long and 5,400 meters wide enclosed by the 1,200-meter depth contour. The summit was characterized by the presence of two prominent pit craters and eastern and western crater located at water depths of 1,100 and 1,370 meters, respectively. A hydrothermally active volcanic cone, named Pele's Vents, was located at a depth of 960 at the southern edge of the summit. The floor of the summit of Loihi was largely covered by prismatic talus, with interstitial hydrothermal clays. Pillow and tube lavas with volcanic cones 5 to 50 meters high were exposed along the axes of the southern and northern rift zones. The inner margin of the summit displayed fissures and normal faults with the downthrown component towards the center of the summit. The pre-earthquake structural data suggest a pre-caldera structural stage for Loihi. Maximum sustained hydrothermal activity observed on Loihi over the past 10 years existed at Pele's Vents with other sporadic venting occurs along the summit platform and along the south rift. Following the earthquake swarm, the hydrothermally saturated Pele's Vents cone gave way and slid into the inner pit crater. Subsequently, the observed above- bottom hydrothermal plume source deepened from 960 to 1,160 meters, possibly emanating from the same intrusive heat source as Pele's Vents. The observed inward collapse of the summit structures and subsequent opening of fissures gave rise to diffuse venting from the newly formed caldera-like depression with the bottom-hugging hydrothermal pool located at depth between 1,250 and 1,220 meters at the sites of the pit craters.

Mineral zonation studies were conducted on hydrothermal vents of two hot spot volcanoes. One study site is located within the Axial Caldera of the axial hot spot volcano of the Juan de Fuca Ridge. The young high-temperature hydrothermal vent field consisting of two polymetallic sulfide chimneys, five meters high, located at 130°01.5'W, 45°56.5'N, along a fault complex at the base of the southwestern wall of Axial Caldera was sampled during four ALVIN dives in 1983. Temperatures of up to 270°C were measured within the orifice of one of the chimneys, which was then broken off and recovered with the submersible. Both black and white "smoke" was observed to be emanating from the one chimney sampled. The high-temperature chimney extends directly from a field of broken lobate lavas which are located at a water depth of 1,550 meters, about 200 meters east of the caldera wall. The chimney makes one of the shallowest active high-temperature vents studied to date. The vent is surrounded by clumps of vestimentiferan worms and is located within an elongate field of red-colored iron smectite blankets and chimneys. The low-temperature field forms a ribbon 150 meters wide, extending for about 1,300 meters at the base of the wall. Chemical analyses of the hydrothermal deposits ranging from the polymetallic sulfides of the chimney to the outer zones of the low-temperature field show a range of elemental assemblages consistent with temperature zonation around the vent. Subsea mineral deposit exploration aboard the R/V Onnuri was performed along the northern Central Indian Ridge (CIR) between 8°S and 17°S in December 2009 ~ January 2010 (09IR Leg01 and 09IR Leg02) and December 2010~ January 2011 (10IR Leg01, 10IR Leg02, and 10IR Leg03). Final goal of the expedition for the first Korean research cruise on mid ocean ridge system is to define seafloor massive sulfide ore bodies through searching the active hydrothermal vents nearby spreading centers as well as to elucidate the nature of spreading segments of the northern CIR area where no systematic survey have been operated before by mapping and sampling of volcanic rocks. The preliminary result of topographical interpretations of bathymetry clearly display ocean core complex between 10°S and 11°S. The ocean core complex is featured by topographic-high area with corrugated surface. Lineaments of corrugations of the ocean core complex are clearly perpendicular to abyssal hill direction which is triggered by symmetric-normal faults. Ocean core complex are favor for hydrothermal fluid path because of the long-lived faults. In further exploration, more detailed examination, including systematic CTD casting and tows, need to narrow down actual venting site around ocean core complex. Magnetic field survey is able to estimate the location of hydrothermal vents with the properties that high temperature of hydrothermal fluids over Curie-point can cause thermal demagnetization. In magnetization intensity map, most of low magnetization zones are located at the nodal point over the ridge axis and the ocean core complex.

The rare earth elements (REE1s; atomic number 57 -71) exhibit a coherent chemistry, are widespread in nature, and tend to occur in characteristic concentrations in different geochemical phases. Because of their predictable chemistry, the REE's-are highly useful as indicators or tracers of geochemical processes, and are often used as such in investigations of the genesis of terrestrial ore deposits. However, analogous applications of the REE's to the study of marine mineral deposits have been constrained by our limited understanding of the marine geochemical cycle of these elements. For example, a continuing area of uncertainty in this regard involves the so-called "REE Mass Balance Problem." This problem refers to the fact that detailed geochemical mass balance calculations typically predict a significant imbalance for the REE's; i.e., the calculations predict that REE removal rates from seawater are 11-18 times greater than their input rates. Yet all other chemical considerations indicate that the REE budget should be roughly in balance. Recent studies at The University of Michigan suggest the solution to this problem lies in understanding the the role of seafloor hydrothermal activity in the marine budget of the REE's. Geochemical analyses of hydrothermal sediments from two Pacific sites (East pacific Rise at 19°s and the Southern Juan de Fuca Ridge at 45°N) clearly show that the REE component of hydrothermal sediments is primarily acquired via scavenging from seawater. Iron oxyhydroxides, which form as precipitates when hydrothermal solutions are debouched onto the seafloor, are the active scavenging agent. Although the REE content of hydrothermal sediments generally increases with increasing distance from the rise crest, this increase is especially pronounced for sediments deposited below the lysocline,

"Recent concerns over the availability of many mineral raw materials, and newly available technological developments, produced renewed interest in deep-sea mining. However, environmental concerns, with variable degrees of justification, are raising opposition to the concept. The forecast for the behavior of consumption versus availability of many raw materials, nearly all critical metals, arguably show that consumption will grow much faster than resource discovery onshore. Finding new sources of raw materials seems inescapable. The deep seafloor stands out as the only likely candidate.Sea Floor Mining and the EcosystemMarine mining has already started, decades ago, for diamonds, currently up to depths near 400m. Although the industry recognizes there is a footprint, it considers the footprint quite minor, because the area mined is small: in Namibia, where offshore diamond mining is now 70% of the country’s total, only 3% of the concession of 3,700 sq miles (9600km2) have been mined. A very extensive spatial and temporal database on benthic infauna and associated sediment metals has been collected for Island Copper Mine on Vancouver Island, B.C. Canada from 1969 (pre-discharge) to 1998 (3 years post-discharge). The tailings deposited as organically impoverished, copper-rich, clays, silts and sands distributed according to particle size, bottom turbidity currents and strong, vertically mixed tidal currents. In addition, a large deposition of coarser waste rock along the north shore of Rupert Inlet contributed substantial material in the shallower, near-field area.

Recognizing that the planned commercial exploitation of polymetallic nodules in the deep sea should be accompanied by environmental studies in order to protect this largest and least understood ecosystem of our planet, the German Ministry for Research and Technology has since 1989 funded a longterm and large-scale disturbance-recolonization (DISCOL) experiment in the abyssal Peru Basin of the equatorial South Pacific Ocean. The circular study site is located at 4150m depths and encompasses about 10km2 of relatively flat, heavily sedimented sea floor with low (< 15%) nodule coverage near an existing German nodule mining exploration license area. The RV SONNE, a large and well-equipped multi-purpose research vessel, served as platform for all environmental cruises conducted to date. The initial DISCOL expedition (SO-61, Feb.-March 1989) was carried out in two legs. During DISCOL 1/1, a study site was selected, a pre-disturbance baseline assessment was undertaken, and sea floor disruption was begun using the "plow-harrow", a uniquely designed disturber device towed repeatedly across the circular study area. During DISCOL 1/2, disturber deployments continued until the device had created 78 criss-crossing and partially overlapping tracks along which nodules were essentially plowed under while sediment from up to 15cm below the seabed had been turned over and exposed at the surface. In addition to the obvious within disturber track impacts, sediment mobilized by plowing drifted off with the prevailing near-bottom current and redeposited downstream, blanketing nearby areas not directly disturbed. Immediately after the disturbance phase, an initial post-impact sampling series was performed. The DISCOL Experimental Area (DEA) was revisited about six months (DISCOL 2, SO-64, Sept. 1989), three years (DISCOL 3, SO-77, Feb. 1992), and seven years (ATESEPP SO-106, Jan.-March 1996) after disturbance to collect further post-impact samples, monitor changes in the benthic community and follow the recolonization process. In addition to benthic community studies, plankton investigations were initiated during the third DISCOL cruise (SO-77) and continued during three further cruises (SO-78, SO-79 and SO-80/2) in 1992.

Analysis of the relationship between environmental parameters and the content of Mn, Ni, Co, Cu, Fe and Zn in ferromanganese crusts permits improved identification of locations to prospect for crusts with commercially valuable concentrations of these metals. In this study we asked whether a statistically significant relationship exists between primary productivity of the overlying surface waters, the concentration of O2 in and depth of the O2 minimum layer on the metal content of non-hydrothermal ferromanganese crusts in the Pacific Ocean between 130o W and 175o E and 0o to 30o S (the study area). To further develop the interpretation of the results of the statistical analysis and to assess in detail the geographical expression of these parameters in terms of metal content in crusts, a geostatistical technique (kriging) was used to generate contoured values for metal content, primary productivity and O2 concentration in and depth of the O2 minimum layer in the study area.

"The paper provides the principle considerations for a novel vehicle class within the scope of the project Large Modifiable Underwater Mothership (MUM). The main idea for these ships is to create a highly modular building block system for the global layout. This building block system allows for a mission-dependent module assembly. For the purpose of deep sea mining for example, the range of tasks reaches from multipurpose transportation and exploration missions to supporting tasks in up to 5000 m depth, e.g. energy supply. Topics covered in this paper are related to potential missions for these vehicles, the modular layout and the structural layout of a separate block module. INTRODUCTIONAs one of the leading economic nations, Germany is in need of energy and raw materials. In the 21st century, marine resources are a prominent and promising alternative to land based resources. However, there are challenges that need to be considered. Rough and often poorly plannable weather conditions prevail distant to the marginal seas. Ice coverage makes offshore services inefficient and costly in Polar Regions. The average ocean depth of 3500m and the associated environment conditions cause difficulties in fulfilling tasks in the deep sea. The project Large Modifiable Underwater Mothership (MUM) [1] will enable more efficient solutions in order to accomplish undersea duties and services in harsh conditions.This joint project comprises workshares from Atlas Elektronik, EvoLogics, thyssenkrupp Marine Systems, the University of Rostock and the Technische Universität Berlin. The principle idea of the project is the conception of a novel vehicle class. With highly modular autonomous underwater vehicles, this class will be capable of undertaking a variety of different tasks. Classically engineered vehicle structures will be split into single basis modules which can be flexibly assembled with specialized mission modules to form potent systems for individual assignments. The group of basis modules consists of units for navigation, vehicle control, propulsion and energy generation via fuel cell technology. The potential reusability of system relevant modules leads to a significant cost reduction and to shortened development periods compared with conventional vehicle concepts. The integration of newly designed additional mission modules is possible with little effort and a separate commercialization of single modules is feasible."

Six active Kermadec arc submarine volcanoes located between 34°S and 36°30’S were mapped and sampled by an interdisciplinary inter-institutional research team between April and July 2005 using submersibles Pisces V and Pisces IV aboard the mother ship the R/V Ka’imikai-o-Kanaloa. The purpose of the expedition was to study the relationship between hydrothermal activity, formation of hydrothermal mineral deposits, and the biodiversity of life associated with the hydrothermal vents. Of the volcanoes examined, all showed evidence of hydrothermal activity, including metal-rich plumes and helium anomalies. Only two of the volcanoes, namely Brothers and Clark, showed chimneys and surficial polymetallic sulfide deposition. Hydrothermal venting at a water depth of approximately 1,650 meters near the base of the northwest caldera wall of Brothers volcano has produced a field of chimneys, some of them seven metres high and discharging black smoker venting. Temperatures up to 300°C were measured from the active vents. Clark volcano has a double cone summit at a water depth of 875 meters. The shallowest cone has a near-summit hydrothermal vent field with five-meter tall venting chimneys with smaller structures around the periphery.

Hydrothermal sulfides were recovered from the16°50?S triple junction area in the North Fiji Basin, at a water depth of ca. 1900 m. The chimney samples can be divided into three groups according to their major metal contents: 1) type 1 (Fe-Cu-rich), 2) type 2 (Fe-Cu-rich with minor Zn), and 3) type 3 (Zn-rich) chimneys. Type 1 chimneys are mainly composed of chalcopyrite and pyrite, and are enriched in elements commonly precipitated under high temperature conditions (> 300°C), such as Cu, Co, Mo, and Se. Type 3 chimneys consist dominantly of sphalerite and marcasite with traces of pyrite and chalcopyrite, and are enriched in elements commonly associated with low temperature (150 to 250°C), such as Zn, Cd, Pb, As, and Ga. Type 2 chimneys show mineralogy similar to that of type 1 chimneys but their metal contents range between type 1 and type 3 samples. Trace element compositions of basaltic rocks indicate that magma generation in the triple junction area was influenced by two different sources: N-MORB and E-MORB. Sulfur and lead isotope patterns of the hydrothermal chimneys show distinct differences between the type 1 and type 3 chimneys. For example, type 1 sulfides are depleted in 34S and have lower Pb isotope ratios compared to type 2 and 3 chimneys. The d34S values (0.4 to 5.6?) of chimney sulfides are typical range of sulfur isotope composition of sediment free mid-ocean ridge hydrothermal system. Type 2 and 3 sulfides show slightly higher d34S values than type 1 sulfides, which can be explained by subsurface boiling of hydrothermal fluids followed by mixing of saline solutions with ambient seawater. Lead isotope compositions of the chimneys indicate that the Pb in type 1 and type 3 chimneys originates from hydrothermal leaching of N-MORB and E-MORB volcanic rocks, respectively. Considering that both these chimneys are located in the same area, our model suggests that type 1 chimneys formed by hydrothermal circulation controlled by an intrusion of N-MORB magma; the fluids were not influenced by boiling during the formation of type 1 chimneys. In contrast, type 3 chimneys are younger and were formed by hydrothermal circulation closely related to E-MORB magma intrusion at shallower depth. The necessary conditions for phase separation of the hydrothermal fluids that formed the type 3 chimneys might result from changed P-T conditions in a shallower high-temperature reaction zone beneath the hydrothermal venting site. Under these conditions the fluid may cross the two-phase boundary for seawater, ensuring subcritical phase separation. The mineralogical and geochemical properties of these chimneys suggest that type 1 and type 3 chimneys were probably black smoker and white smoker, respectively. Type 2 chimneys might be product of low-temperature replacement of type 1 chimneys, which is related to formation of type 3 chimneys.

A regional assessment of the aggregate potential of the Scotian Shelf is presently being funded through a Canada-Nova Scotia Cooperation Agreement on Mineral Development. This assessment includes testing of seabed materials for their suitability in a variety of concrete, asphalt and other specialized applications. The glacial and postglacial Holocene history of the Scotian Shelf has been favourable for the formation of large deposits of sand and gravel that have potential for use as marine aggregate resources. Large banks and inner shelf areas of the seabed consist of basal transgressive sand and gravel of the Sable Island Sand and Gravel Formation. These sediments accumulated during the late Wisconsinan postglacial transgression, through sorting of glacial materials that were originally deposited beneath marine terminating glaciers. Some sandy deposits occur as low-stand deltas on the inner shelf at 70 m water depth and were formed during the maxi- mum low sea level stand, in early postglacial time, at approximately 12 000 yBP. Modern sediment transport processes have contributed to the formation of areas of large sand bedforms, such as the Cape Split sand wave field and other isolated sand waves of the inner Bay of Fundy, and Eastern Shoal on Banquereau. Sandy sediments, found in many transverse channels in the nearshore, offer a potential for placer gold where proximal to adjacent onshore epithermal gold deposits. Lithothamnion covered gravel occurs as a thin lag overlying glacial sediments in much of the nearshore. Relict gravel beach ridges have been eroded and redistributed through sub-littoral processes after passage of the transgressing beach front. Multibeam bathymetry, sidescan sonograms and high-resolution seismic reflection profiles are the main survey tools. Ground truth consists of large volume seabed samples, vibrocores and photographs. A preliminary assessment of the aggregate potential indicates that very large volumes of suitable aggregate lie in the offshore of southeast Canada.

Low- to intermediate-temperature, diffuse-flow hydrothermal fields and associated mineral precipitates have been found at many locations along oceanic spreading centers, back-arc basin spreading axes, and midplate hot-spots. However, this type of hydrothermal field has not been found in oceanic fracture zones until recently. We mapped and collected samples from an active hydrothermal field in the Blanco Fracture Zone (BFZ) located in the northeast Pacific. The BFZ connects the Gorda and Juan de Fuca spreading centers and is divided into east and west segments by Cascadia Depression, a small spreading center. Small pull-apart basins occur along both the east and west segments. A complex set of basins near the western end of the BFZ includes from east to west, Surveyor Depression, East Blanco Depression (EBD), and West Blanco Depression. The hydrothermal field described here is located in the EBD.

Ferromanganese crusts are found on most hard-rock substrates in the deep ocean (800-3,000 m). Their distributions on seamounts are complex and controlled by a wide-variety of factors including seamount morphology, current patterns, mass wasting, substrate rock type and age, subsidence history, and others. However, the development of this potential resource ultimately depends on this distribution, as well as on the small-scale topography, grade, and tonnage. The parameters that will ultimately be used to define a mine site are unknown, but reasonable assumptions based on 25 years of data collection can be used to bracket likely permissive characteristics.

There are two environmental issues which have only recently begun to need planning in detail for marine mining. One is the environmental consequences of mine closure; the other is environmental terrorism. In principle it is not difficult to predict the pattern and rate of biodiversity recovery after mine closure on metalliferous depositional seabeds. 1-5 years to a self-sustaining community of organisms is a generalized guideline, depending on depth and particulate composition. The rate and pattern of biodiversity recovery on some metalliferous hard-rock habitats is far less predictable due to the patchiness and rareness of the habitat. Ecoterrorism at mines, whether on-land or marine, is now to be expected. A good example of resource industry ecoterrorism is the fire-bombing of logging and cement trucks in Oregon in 2001. But there have also been bombs at mine sites, as at Asbestos, Quebec. It is also possible to regard some resource-loss lawsuits as frivolous, hence forms of ecoharassment. Marine mining operations should take note of the development of environmental terrorism (and terrorism in general) and its various manifestations and impacts. Potentially these range from minor work stoppage inconveniences, to serious financial risk jeopardizing the economics of a mine, to jail for company executives, managers and environmental staff, and to harassment and killing of mine personnel.

A chemical and geological study of beach samples from the Mexican North Pacific was undertaken in order to evaluate the chemical composition of the beach sediments and it s association to lithology, climate, topography and weathering. The North Pacific Mexican littoral is characterized by arid weather with wide coastal plains and three geological provinces. The sands from the area are mainly finer, well sorted and show high maturity because of the high wave regime and the high energy conditions produced by the California Current in the coastline. The provenance index reflects that the region has a source of deep seated rocks, now exposed and dissected. Factor analysis made using the chemical composition showed the samples can be differentiated by five factors: 1) SiO2, 2) Al2O3; 3) Cu; 4) Sr and P2O2 and 5) Na content. Samples located in the northof the study area showed the highest values of Fe2O3 (17.72%), TiO2 (2.43%), V (576 ppm) and Zn (141 ppm) associated to methamorphic rocks present in the area.

As we enter into the 21st Century, miners are looking more attentively at new mining technologies allowing decrease environment damage along with operational cost. This technic would allow developing of poor and difficult mineral deposits, including the World Ocean offshore zone. Borehole Mining is an underground/underwater remote method of mining carried out from floating platforms or vessels. Definition of Borehole Mining (BHM), working schematic, main technical data and its advantages are given. The method is currently in use in mining of different type of raw materials, such as: uranium, iron ore, quartz sand, coal, polymetallic ores, phosphate, gold, diamonds, rare earths, amber and more. It is also in use in oil and gas stimulation, salt domes storages building and environmental problems solution. Recently recorded data of Borehole Mining productivity (80-100 t/hour/hole) and a depth of mining (over 1 km) has been achieved in a last couple years. Remoteness of method not only secures complete safety of operations but also allows wide sector of underwater applications. The World leaders in Borehole Mining are Russia and the United States. Based on previous experience the Universal Tool for Seabed Borehole Mining has been developed for wide sector of usage: from exploration and mining - through oil & gas stimulation to souterrain storages construction and lake&apos;s bottom cleaning.

The North Fiji Basin (NFB) is a mature intraoceanic back arc basin with an age of ~12 Ma. Recent volcanism and spreading activity are focused along the Central Spreading Ridge (CSR), A ridge segment more than 800 km long, composed of four main segments, the N160°, N15°, north-south (N-S), and southernmost segments from north to south. The dominant volcanic rock in the entire central spreading ridge is normal mid-ocean ridge basalt (N-MORB), very similar to those emplaced along mid-oceanic ridges. Conversely, influence of an oceanic island basalt (OIB) source increases northward from 18°20&apos;S. Several basalts which show a significant subduction-related component are also observed in the southern part of the NFB. Hydrothermal activity along the spreading centers of the North Fiji Basin was investigated by several previous works, especially by the STARMER project in 1989 and 1991. Both extinct and active hydrothermal vents are found on the N15° and N-S segments. In contrast, only traces of hydrothermal activity have been found on the N160° segment. Although high temperature activity and related massive sulfide deposit on the N15° segment was further investigated by several follow-up studies, no systematic survey for other hydrothermal sites was conducted after their discovery. In 2012 and 2013, KIOST performed two hydrothermal expeditions aboard the R/V Onnuri in the three targeted areas of hydrothermal activity along the CSR of North Fiji Basin. INTRODUCTION Germany has a long history in marine research in the Indian Ocean. The first German scientific cruise started in 1964, followed by a series of state-sponsored research cruises between 1983 and 1995 leading to the first finding of polymetallic sulfides in the Indian Ocean. The research included regional bathymetric, geological, structural, volcanological, petrological and hydrothermal investigations along the Carlsberg Ridge and the Central Indian Ridge (CIR). Early environmental base line studies covered oceanographic and sedimentology aspects. In 2010, BGR took the initiative for the preparation of a license application for the exploration of polymetallic sulfides with the International Seabed Authority (ISA), and prospecting started in 2011 along the southern Central (CIR) and the northern Southeast Indian Ridge (SEIR) in the southwestern Indian Ocean (cruises INDEX 2011 on board R/V Sonne), INDEX 2012 (R/V Fugro Gauss), INDEX 2013/1-2 (R/V Sonne) and INDEX 2014 (R/V Pelagia). After three years of resource-oriented and environmental base line studies, BGR, in order for the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi), applied for an exploration license which was approved by and subsequently signed with the ISA in 2015. The license gave permission to start a detailed exclusive resource-oriented exploration program in the license area. The program includes the outline of potential ore deposits and a resource assessment but also extensive and detailed base line studies for the sustainable protection of the marine environment in the license area. The license contract has a fifteen years lifetime and may allow the application for a subsequent mining license. The exploration aims at the identification of inactive polymetallic sulfide deposits, formed below former discharge zones of hot hydrothermal fluids on the ocean floor (“black smoker” systems), by advanced and modern exploration techniques.

Various kinds of sediment-hosted polymetallic sulfide deposit are known on land in ancient marine sequences, many tending to be larger and more valuable than massive sulfide deposits genetically associated with volcanic host rocks. Often such deposits are attributed to subhalative or shallow sub-seafloor precipitation processes, and structural control by faulting is commonly evident. Apart from the famous but anomalous Red Sea metallic oozes and several NE Pacific sites (Middle Valley, Escanaba Trough, Guaymas Basin), however, modern analogs of the sediment-hosted polymetallic sulfide category are lacking. Some deposits hosted by volcaniclastic rocks, such as JADE (Okinawa Trough) and Suzette (Eastern Manus Basin) are strictly sediment-hosted, but their formation is associated with the igneous activity and they are better considered a variant of the more abundant volcanic-associated polymetallic sulfide deposits.
