"The Uranium deposit of Gunnar Mines, Limited, is on the south shore of Crackingstone peninsula in the Beaverlodge area of northern Saskatchewan.The ore consists of disseminated pitchblende and uranophane in brecciated syenite, and forms a tubular or pipelike body, outcropping at the surface and plunging southward at about 45 degrees for a known length of1,400 feet (see Figure I). The upper portion is being removed by open-pit mining to a depth of 300 feet below adjacent Lake Athabasca. The remainder will require underground mining methods (see Figure 2).The property was staked in July, I 952, and the orebody was subsequently defined by about 70,000 feet of diamond drilling. A 1,250-ton mill was completed in 1955, and production commenced in September of that year with ore from the open-pit operation. The mill is presently being increased to 1,650 tons capacity, and a three-compartment vertical shaft is being sunk to 1,250 feet in preparation for underground mining.GeologyThe mine property is underlain by an assemblage of Precambrian metasediments known locally as paragneiss, granite-gneiss, and syenite. These lie on the southeast limb of a southwest-plunging anticline, strike about north 75 degrees east, and dip southward at about 45 degrees. Para- gneiss outcrops in the northwestern half of the claim group, and again on the islands south of St. Mary's Channel. The granite-gneiss lies conform-ably within the paragneiss and makes up the southeastern part of the property. The syenite forms an irregular, triangular-shaped mass within, and near the footwall of, the granite-gneiss band. Small lenticular bodies of mafic rocks are also present, the former being most prevalent in the paragneiss.The granite-gneiss is coarse to medium-grained, pink to grey, well foliated, and composed of feldspar (65 per cent), quartz (20 per cent), chlorite, and minor mica. The general concordance of its contacts with paragneiss and the absence of intrusive relationships along these, the presence of uniformly oriented inclusions of obviously sedimentary origin within the granite-gneiss, and the variation in colour and texture across the strike all strongly suggest that this member represents a granitized sedimentary rock."

Magnetic shape memory alloys (MSMA's) are a class of materials where magnetic energy can be converted into mechanical energy and vice versa. NiMnGa-based MSMA's have attained magnetic field induced strains up to approximately 10% and have a relatively wide operating temperature range, from well below 0°C to above RT, making them very attractive for a variety of applications. However, these materials also suffer from low toughness. Using these materials in a composite could mitigate this shortcoming, and also overcome limits imposed by inertia and eddy current losses. In this work, we describe the manufacture and characterization of such composites. Composites with 30% by volume MSMA were fabricated under a magnetic field resulting in anisotropic magnetic properties. Damping properties were evaluated by dynamic mechanical analysis.

The most widespread methods for producing metallic copper are smelting of copper sulphide concentrates (which generates various types of polluting substances) and the hydrometallurgical route which consists of leaching in sulphate and chloride media (usually employing high temperature, high-pressure and special equipments). This paper presents a process, called VEPE, which consists of oxidizing copper sulphide concentrates in weak alkaline media (Na2C03 orland NaOH solutions), under low pressure and with air sparging. The oxidized concentrate contains less than 0.4% S. Copper is recovered from the oxidized concentrate by the standard leaching-solvent extraction-electrowinning route, with a total efficiency of 98% extraction. The proposed technology could represent a good opportunity to recover copper from sulphide concentrates in a clean, simple and profitable way.

As outlined within the Denison Mines Corp’s (“Denison”) Pre-Feasibility Study ("PFS") completed in late 2018, additional work is required to increase confidence and reduce risk associated with the application of the In-Situ Recovery (“ISR”) mining method at the Phoenix deposit, located on the Wheeler River Uranium Project (“Wheeler River” or the “Project”) in northern Saskatchewan. The successful application of ISR in any geological environment largely hinges on three fundamental requirements, 1) permeability (of the deposit), 2) containment (of the mining solution) and 3) leachability (of the mineralization). Denison has designed several staged technical programs to progressively reduce risk associated with these requirements as the Company advances the Project toward a Feasibility Study (“FS”) and Environmental Impact Assessment (“EIA”). This paper will discuss the scope and results of certain technical programs being undertaken as the Company aims to develop the first ISR mining operation in the Athabasca Basin.

"The property of Pamour Porcupine Mines, Limited, is in the eastern Porcupine area, about 12 miles northeast of Timmins. It covers parts of lots 3-6 (inclusive), cons. 5 and 6, Whitney tp., Cochrane district, Ontario. It is an amalgamation of the old La Palme, Three Nations, and Porcupine Grande properties.The first discovery on the Pamour was made in 1911. During 1911 to 1914 a small shaft was sunk on the Three Nations vein to the 200-foot level and a 100-ton stamp mill was put in operation, but only a small production was achieved. The property remained idle from 1914 to 1923. In 1924 some diamond drilling was done along the Keewatin-Timiskaming contact with some encouraging results, but the gold mineralization encountered was too low in general at the price of gold then prevailing to warrant further · work. The increase in the price of gold revived interest in the area, and the above noted amalgamation was effected in 1934. Options were taken and successively dropped by two large mining companies. Following this, exploration both on the surface and underground was started by Quebec Gold Mining Corporation, Limited. Diamond drilling in the early part of 1933 showed considerable ore in conglomerate and greywacke to the east. In the middle of 1935 Noranda Mines, Limited, assumed control and management. A new shaft was sunk and the property was ·equipped with a mill having an initial capacity of750 tons a day. This was subsequently enlarged to 1,500 tons a day.From the commencement of milling (May 16, 1936) to the end of 1946, 5,025,545 tons of ore having an average grade of 0.1327 oz. a ton ($4.64 at $35 an oz.) have been mined and milled."

The Beloziminskoe deposit in Siberia is a large, potentially productive deposit of rare metals contained in ochreous apatite pyrochlore ores formed by weathering of a carbonatite. The ores are composed of pyrochlore, columbitized pyrochlore, monazite, apatite, magnetite, ferric and manganese hydroxide, titanic iron ore, zircon, hydromica, quartz, feldspar, and carbonates. A gravity-flotation enrichment flowsheet with application of cationic and anionic collectors has been developed. This flowsheet allows for obtaining a pyrochlore concentrate containing 44.3% Nb2O5 and 1.89% P2O5 with recovery of 55.83% Nb2O5 as well as an apatite concentrate containing 39.2% P2O5 and 1.05% TR2O3 with recovery of 62% P2O5 and 43.23% TR2O3 from ores containing 0.92% Nb2O5, 16.9% P2O5 and 0.6% TR2O3. Rare-earth concentrate containing 40% TR2O3 with recovery of approximately 10% TR2O3 was obtained at the same time. Major losses of valuable elements are related to slimes, which make up more than 50% of the ground ore. The niobium concentrate does not meet the phosphorus and radionuclide concentrations needed for the production of ferro-niobium. Acid leaching and sulfatization provided a high level of phosphorous and radionuclide removal. Conditions include hydrochloric acid pre-leaching at 75- 80°C with an 18% HCl solution for four hours and low-temperature sulfatization of acid-leached concentrate at 160-180°C for one hour followed by water leaching of the residue. The apatite concentrate could potentially be processed using nitric acid leaching. This technology is based on decomposition of apatite concentrate with 55-57% strength nitric acid with transfer of rare-earth metals into solution in the form of ammonium phosphate. This technology recovers a rare-earth concentrate containing 95% TR2O3 with extraction of 86%, and highly concentrated polynutrient fertilizer (ammophos) with phosphorus extraction of 95%. The completed research shows how complex multicomponent ores of residual soil may be processed for the extraction of niobium, phosphorus, and rare-earth products.

Shales and mudstones comprise about 75% of all the sedimentary rocks. In, particular, organic rich shales are considered as a petroleum source rock and more recently with the advent of hydraulic fracturing technology to be a reservoir in their own right. In this sense, the aforesaid motivates our work with laboratory measurements of elastic properties of these geologic materials, which are known to be anisotropic. As such, assuming Vertical Transverse Isotropy (VTI) symmetry, the dynamic and static moduli of a series of cores from various geological formations in Alberta, Canada are simultaneously investigated as a function of confining pressure using the ultrasonic pulse transmission method and strain gages. Dynamic moduli were obtained from ultrasonic P- and S-wave velocities measured on a prism cut with faces perpendicular, parallel and oblique to the assumed vertical axis of symmetry. Static moduli were calculated from strain-stress curves obtained along the directions perpendicular and parallel to the assumed axis of symmetry as well. Velocity measurements show that samples are highly anisotropic, but that the pressure-dependent behaviour of the wave speeds differs. VP(90°) and VSH(90°) both with layer parallel propagation and polarizations change little with pressure while VP(0°) and VS(0°) (both with layer perpendicular propagation) display significant nonlinear responses particularly at pressures < 25 MPa. These characters transfer to the derived full set of elastic constants. In order to effect a proper comparison of the dynamic and static moduli, we convert the dynamic elastic constanst to linear compressibilities pependicular (Kdyn1) and parallel (Kdyn3) which are directly comparable to the static tangent compressibiities obtained by differentiation of the observed strains. Both sets highlight the anisotorpic nature of the material but most interestingly Kdyn1 _ Ksta1 but Kdyn3 > Ksta3 by nearly 40% for one of the samples. The other samples measured respond similarly suggesting that conceptually the structure of such materials could be considered to be constructed of alternating stiff or compliant layers. This finding has implications in the response of the formation to stress particularly during hydraulic fracturing and the interpreation of acoustic logs in providing appropriate measures of elastic properties for engineering purposes.

"The interaction between a deformable bubble and a rigid particle in viscous liquids under microgravity conditions is studied by direct numerical simulation via an Arbitrary-Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) method. Due to the microgravity, the bubble will stay as a sphere in the fluid without external forces and its deformation is caused by the moving particle. In this study we assume the flow field is axisymmetric and the motion of the gas inside the bubble is neglected. The particle equations and the Navier-Stokes equations for the fluid are solved in a unified finite element framework. The particle obtains an impact velocity by an external force and the impact velocity is varied over a wide range. A ‘critical time scale’ T0 was identified for the interaction process. For successful contacts between particle and bubble, the time scale of their relative motion must be less than T0.INTRODUCTIONThe particle-bubble interaction is an important process in many applied industrial domains such as water treatment, froth flotation and liquid steel purification. It is a complex three phase process in that it embraces many research areas: fluid hydrodynamics, interfacial forces, particle and bubble behaviour and solution chemistry.Derjaguin and Dukhin(1961) clarified the particle-bubble interaction by introducing three-zone model for small and medium size particles. When the particle is far away from the bubble surface, the hydrodynamic forces are dominant. The particle is driven toward the bubble surface by the particle inertial and gravity. This region is regarded as Zone 1 and the interaction in this zone is a collision subprocess. As the particle gets close to the bubble, it exits a zone where the liquid flow around the bubble surface creates a tangential stream from the upper surface of the bubble toward the rear of the bubble. This is Zone 2 which is called the diffusiophoretic zone. In Zone 3, the particle is very closed to the bubble, surface forces like van der Waals, electrostatic and structural forces are considered. Contrast to Zone 1, Zone3 can be regarded as an attachment subprocess."

Cu–Ni–P alloys are the typical precipitation-hardening material. Thus, Cu–Ni–P alloys is expected to apply alternative materials for heat-exchanger tubes. Therefore, it was investigated that the effect of the heat-treatment simulated brazing on mechanical properties of Cu–Ni–P alloy in this study. The hardness of specimen as heat-treatment simulated brazing after solution heat treated (sht) was shown approximately 105 HV. The peak hardness and tensile strength of the specimen as performed aged at 498 K for 43.2 ks following the heat-treatment simulated brazing achieved at approximately 140 HV and 260 MPa, respectively. From these results, it is expected the application to higher-strength tube for heat-exchanger after brazing in a furnace. INTRODUCTION Copper prices have increased dramatically with high in recent years. At the same time, manufacturing industries are required to reduce the environment load by reducing the wall thickness of the copper tubes used in heat exchangers. High-strength copper alloys are developed for reducing the wall thickness, while achieving high strength, of the copper tubes. Moreover, excellent workability and corrosive durability are also required by these copper tubes. Furthermore, the brazing, which are carried out at about 1050 K during the assembly process of heat exchangers, leads to grain growth and re-solving of additive elements. Nomura et al. achieved a tensile strength and Vickers hardness of approximately 260 MPa and 110 HV, respectively, after aging at 723 K for approximately 36 ks. Tamagawa et al. studied that the strength of Cu–Ni–P alloy rapidly increased at about 125 HV during the cooling process after the heat brazing due to the Ni2P precipitates sized 5–10 nm. Furthermore, Inagaki et al. achieved a Vickers hardness of approximately 130 HV by aging at 498 K for 10.8 ks. In the present study, we focused on the lowest aging temperature of 498 K in the previous study, and investigating the effect of heat-treatment simulated brazing on the mechanical properties of the Cu–0.93 mass%Ni–0.24 mass%P alloy.

"IntroductionThe purpose o f this paper is to review the evidence at hand concerning the earliest centuries of cast iron in Europe, from roughly 1400 A.D. until the second half of the sixteenth century. For the most part it is concerned with the relationship between two technologies which emerged first in China and then later appear in Western lands, gunpowder weapons and iron founding. We should not assume, as I hope to show later in this discussion, that weapons constituted the only product for which the iron founder had any market, but it is clearly true that attempts to produce weapons constituted the most severe technical challenge for the early founder. Firearms appear for the first time in Europe in the 1320s and develop into significant weapons on the field of battle by the end of the century. Theirs is a complex history, subject neither to easy summary treatment nor to simplified models of development. I hope to be able, through the analysis of the evidence concerning cast iron, to show that one important strand in the fabric of gunpowder&apos;s history concerns the materials from which cannon could be made. This question is subject to a number of shades of meaning, because ""cannon"" can be made for many purposes under a profusion of different names, and under sharply varying conditions of use. As a result, the question of materials is frequently really a question of competing materials, and involves a complex set of factors, of which production costs and the ultimate safety of the user seem the most important. Judged in this manner cast iron was an important but unsatisfactory metal for weapons purposes until 1543, at which time English founders learned to make iron muzzle-loading cannon which could rival bronze ordinance in most important performance criteria, but which cost much less to produce. With that event, the history of cast iron and the history of weapons entered into the close relationship that persisted until the advent of rifled artillery made of steel in the middle of the nineteenth century."

"A hybrid process consisting of flotation and magnetic separation has been developed to concentrate multi-phase rare earth minerals associated with a carbonatite ore that contains a significant amount of niobium. Fine grinding to a d80 of <65 microns was required to obtain acceptable separation of 92% of the contained total rare earth oxide (TREO) and niobium in half the feed mass. Whereas it was possible to obtain 85% of TREO in 28% of the feed mass through staged cleaning, it was demonstrated that at least 87% and 85% recoveries of TREO and Nb respectively could be achieved in 16% of the feed if the rougher-scavenger concentrates were calcined, quenched, reground to <25 µm and then magnetically upgraded. The paper discusses the overall concept of the flowsheet and the experimental strategies that led to this progress. INTRODUCTIONOut of the approximately 250 minerals known to contain rare earth elements (REEs), only about 60 of them contain REEs in significant amounts. Over 95% of the world’s rare earth oxides (REOs) are believed to occur in the form of three minerals (Pradip & Fuerstenau, 1991) namely bastnaesite (Ce,La,Y)CO3F, monazite (Ce,La,Nd,Th)PO4 and xenotime Y(PO)4. An estimated 51.4% of global REO resources are hosted by carbonatite deposits with the same three minerals as major constituents (Weng et. al., 2015). Any one of the REEs or commonly all of them can be found in these minerals (Ravnaas, 2010). As the demand for critical REEs increases due to the ever increasing applications in advanced technologies, many deposits containing other forms of REE minerals will have to be developed. REE minerals are extensively dispersed and intergrown with several oxides, silicates, carbonates, and phosphate minerals. Consequently it is possible to liberate them only at fine grinding and is thus difficult to separate and produce high grade rare earth mineral concentrates. Most of these minerals contain other important elements such as tantalum (Ta), niobium (Nb), uranium (U), and thorium (Th) in varied quantities. REE minerals in the same ore may exist as carbonates, fluorocarbonates, niobates, silicates, phosphates etc. in association with gangue minerals belonging to different mineralogical groups."

"Srnoky River Coal is capable ofprocessing 3 million tonnes per year ofrun-of-mine coal at the Smoky River Coal preparation facilities to produce 2.1 million tonnes of high quality, low volatile coking coal for export markets. Multi-seam surface and underground mining operations are scheduled to maintain raw coal feed to the plant. Two beneficiating circuits wash the coal. A heavy medium cyclone circuit cleans the plus 0.5 mm coal and a froth flotation circuit cleans the minus 0.5 mm coal. Clean coal is thermally dried, loaded into unit trains, treated for dust suppression, and transported to west coast port facilitiesf or export. Plant by-products are used as thermal fuel Jn an adjacent power station. Quality control procedures ensure efficient resource recovery for a yield of uniform specification product, at a 7% ash level. Introduction Smoky River Coal operates surface and underground mines in the Smoky River coalfield. Approximately 3 million tonnes per year (mt/ a) of run-of-mine (ROM) coal can be processed at the coal preparation plant to provide 2.1 mt/ a of clean, high quality, low volatile bituminous coking coal. Coal is processed by heavy media and froth flotation cleaning circuits and is thermally dried.Raw Coal Characteristics The characteristics of the ROM coal, both in terms of quality and size consistency, vary with intrinsic seam qualities and mining methods employed. The two seams mined (No. 4 and No. 10) show distinctly different washability characteristics. Seam No. 4 contains relatively few middlings and can be readily cleaned by dense-medium cyclones and froth flotation to give a clean coal at specification ash content. Seam No. JO is more difficult to wash, and the ash content of the clean coal is higher than No. 4 seam at the same operating conditions. However, when the upper I m is excluded from the plant feed, the remaining lower section has washability characteristics similar to No. 4 seam. Coal mined by underground means sometimes contains caprock and consequently tends to be dirtier than similar coal mined by surface means."

"The Saskatchewan potash beds are overlain by a number of water-bearing formations. There are water zones in the footwall as well. These aquifers created difficulties during the construction of shafts to the potash beds at 1()(}() m depth, and they pose a continuous threat to the safe and efficient operation of potash mines in the province.The first shafts to be sunk in Saskatchewan encountered major problems during shaft sinking. Of the 17 potash shafts started in the province, five had major water inflows during shaft sinking or after production startup, and one was abandoned because of water problems. The biggest obstacle encountered during shaft sinking was a poorly consolidated sand-shale-clay-siltstone unit commonly called the Blairmore Formation, which occurs at a depth of about 500 m. The initial problems with shaft sinking were overcome in the 19605by using European methods of freezing and the installation of cast-iron tubbings or a double-steel lining through water bearing horizons.From the start of production in the early 19605, operators have been aware of the ever-present hazard of potential water inflows into mine openings from permeable units in both the hanging wall (carbonates of the Dawson Bay Formation which occur 15 m to 50 m above the mining level) and the footwall (carbonates of the Winnipegosis Formation which occur 50 m to 150m below). This awareness has been reflected in conservative over-all extraction rates and mining layouts specific to local conditions. In spite of this consciousness, a number of water problems have occurred in operating mines. These have resulted in everything from simple increases in expenditure to the shut-down of one mine in 1987.In this paper a history of water problems in the Saskatchewan potash industry is given, followed by a summary of measures that are now commonly used to avoid these problems. A description of each inflow event is given, and the attempt is made to analyze the causes of each occurrence. Based on what was learned f rom each event, suggestions are made to prevent future water inflows into potash mines."

"Shaft sinking by blind shaft drilling offers the mining industry a different approach to shaft construction. Benefits of blind drilling include less construction time and fewer safety problems while being economically competitive with conventional sinking methods under certain conditions in soft water-bearing formations.Technology and equipment are available today to drill blind shafts up to 20 feet in diameter and over 3,000 feet deep. This is an extension of proven techniques developed by private industry. To drill a 20-foot-diameter hole requires a specially manufactured hydraulic drill unit with a rated hoist of 2 million pounds and 500,000 ft/lb of torque.This brief paper will discuss the following aspects of blind shaft drilling:• benefits;• equipment f or drilling;• circulation methods;• circulation rates;• shaft alignment; and• progress rates to be expected.IntroductionShaft sinking by blind shaft drilling offers the mining industry an improved alternative method for shaft construction. The drilling of 20-foot -diameter shafts to depth s in excess of 3,000 feet can be done by utilizing equipment specifically designed and manufactured for this purpose. This equipment is a distant cousin, at best, to standard oil well drilling rigs. The actual configuration of these drilling machines will be discussed in a following section.To most people, the drilling of mine shafts may seem to be a new or at least recent technology. However, as early as the I920s, German and Dutch miners were drilling 24-foot diameter shafts for coal mines. What led ""miners to resort to drilling were ground conditions that still plague conventional shaft sinkers today: soft , water-bearing formations. The major drawback to these early attempts was a low penetration rate due to poor bit cleaning. This, however, was not the end of early shaft drilling activity. From 1936 to 1950, a number of mine shafts were drilled by the calyx or coring method. This method employs a bit with a large bore down the center. As it drills, it cuts a core. When 5 to 10 feet have been drilled, the core is removed. The disadvantages of this method were the time and work involved in breaking the core free, and it was inadequate in soft water-bearing ground."

"The selective adsorption of a flotation collector to a mineral plays a crucial role in enhancing the hydrophobicity of targeted mineral particles for attaching air bubbles in pulp. The recent progress of the structure-reactivity relationship of flotation collectors, the characterization methods for mineral surfaces with adsorbed collectors and their commercial application are reviewed in this paper. Particular emphasis is placed on the density functional theory (DFT) for understanding the reactivity of new collectors, the surface analysis techniques including time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS), in situ scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) and atomic force microscope (AFM) to characterize mineral/collector interface, and the flotation technologies for optimizing recovery of valuable minerals. Especially, the recently developing collectors such as Gemini, alkoxyalkylthiourea, dithiourea, amide-hydroxamate and oximido-thiol surfactants, and their specificity to given minerals are evaluated. Based on this crucial review, it is evident that the structural modification approaches for minerophilic or hydrophobic groups, and combined surface analysis approach for further understanding the adsorption mechanism of collectors on mineral surfaces will lay a solid foundation for the future development of flotation collectors. INTRODUCTIONIn mineral processing, flotation is the main process for separation and recovery of valuable minerals from the ores contained them (Fuerstenau et al., 2007). One of the key requirements in flotation process is to increase selectively the surface hydrophobicity of the targeted minerals by collector adsorption so that these mineral particles can preferably attach to air bubbles in a slurry or pulp (Fuerstenau et al., 2007). Flotation collector is a kind of functional surfactant, which is composed of polar and non-polar groups (Somasundaran, & Wang, 2006). Non-polar portion, commonly being linear, branch or ring hydrocarbon group, is termed hydrophobic group. The polar portion, exhibiting strong affinity to mineral surfaces, is known as minerophilic group (Nagaraj, 1988). According to mineral types including saline, oxide and sulfide minerals, flotation collector divides into sulfide and oxide mineral collectors. For efficient recovery of valuable minerals from the refractory complex ores, insights into the adsorption mechanism, hydrophobic model and subsequent flotation approach of flotation collectors have been regarded as an indispensable issue in mineral processing."

"This paper illustrates the different ways grade-tonnage curves can be generated f or a mineral deposit. It emphasizes systematic discrepancies between reality, estimates and actual production according to different estimation methods and grade control programs. It does not offer a universal solution to the prediction of grade-tonnage curves. Hopefully, it will inspire caution to mineral economists who use estimated grade and tonnage data in the establishment of an optimum cut-off grade for a mining operation.IntroductionThe value of a mineral development venture often depends on a grade-tonnage curve. Statistics can help. The idea is to divide mentally the orebody into small blocks called selective mining units or SMUs. A SMU is an idealized version of the quantity of rock the grade of which will be tested against the cut-off at the time of mining. It could be as small as a truck load or a shovel load in very selective operations like some uranium mines where radiometric probing of each truck or car is performed. More typically, in an open pit operation, it will be the smallest zone flagged as ore from blast hole data, e.g. a 5 m by 5 m by 10m block, if blast holes are on a 5 m grid and bench height is 10m. Having defined the SMUs, the grade-tonnage curve determination amounts to evaluating the grade distribution of all the SMUs that can be mined in the depo sit. If we know this distribution we simply apply the cut-off to it and we get the number of SMUs above the cut-off (i.e. ore tonnage) and their average grade. .Assessment of the grade distribution of SMUs from exploration drill hole data is not an easy exercise and much has been published on the subject (David, 1972; Marechal , 1972; Huijbregts, 1975; Marechal, 1975; Guibal and Touffait, 1982). In this paper, we use a gold mine example to illustrate the influence of SMU size on the results. With the same example we also show that ""common-sense"" methods of grade-tonnage curve determination can sometimes be misleading."

The discussion will cover an environmental forecast and define the company&apos;s"" strategy for survival"" for the balance of this century.IntroductionIn December last year, I was asked to deliver a pa per for the management lecture series a t the Asian Institute of Management in Manila. The paper was entitled "" The 1970&apos;s: A Decade of Disaster For New Mining Projects"" . In that paper, it was my task to review the results of new mining projects in the Philippines during the previous decade. The task was not a happy one, for the results themselves were not only unhappy, but disastrous on a scale unprecedented in Philippine history. Out of a total of 17 major mining project s involving an aggregate capital investment in excess o f US $2 billion during the 1970s, only three project s have been profitable, and all the rest have either gone "" belly up"" or are teetering on the very edge of financial disaster.It is in the context of this shocking record of widespread financial dislocation in the Philippine mining industry, (which in varying degrees appears to have been paralleled in virtually every other country in the world where mining is an important sector of the economy) that I address myself tonight to the theme of this symposium. My paper is entitled ""Risk Management Strategy in Mining"" and it is sub titled ""Can Benguet Corporation Survive to Celebrate its Centennial in 2003?"". I have inserted the word ""Strategy"" and added the subtitle, because I wish to make it clear first, that my presentation to you tonight will be focused exclusively on the strategic aspect s of risk management, and second that I will limit myself to Benguet&apos;s own ""in-house"" experience and perspectives on this subject. I would caution you therefore, to consider my views within this restricted framework, and in light of the particular and sometimes peculiar circumstances within which Benguet Corporation operates."

"The Property of Opemiska Copper Mines (Quebec) Ltd. is in Levy Township, Chibougamau district, west of Chibougamau and south of Opemiska Lake. The original find was made in 1929 by the late Leo Springer and associates of Prospectors Airways Ltd., following observation from the air of an area of dark rocks in newly burned-over country. Work on the ground discovered three veins of high-grade chalcopyrite in gabbro (No. l, No. 2, and ""North"") and, after several seasons of trenching and diamond drilling, financed by Ventures Ltd., a shaft was sunk in 1936. This work indicated about 280,000 tons of six per cent copper ore to a depth of 500 feet. During this period, the senior author carried out a reconnaissance geological survey over the whole property and surrounding claims, which showed that the veins were in the gabbro portion of a large composite basic sill that had been folded with the enclosing lavas. Owing to the low price of copper and lack of transport work was suspended and the property remained dormant until 1951.In that year the company was re-financed, the property prepared for production, and further exploratory drilling undertaken. The drilling, based on structural indications, located a new vein of which the only previous evidence had been some irregular stringers. This vein, No. 3, was traced by drilling for a length of 2,000 feet and the indicated reserves were thereby increased to about one million tons. An additional vein, No. 4, was intersected in several holes.With this encouragement, plans for production were confirmed, and operations commenced' at the beginning of 1954 on a scale of about 400 tons a day, concentrates being shipped by truck to St. Felicien and thence by rail to Noranda. In the first year of operation concentrates were re-covered carrying 14,047,210 pounds of copper, 76,714 ounces of silver, and 6,259 ounces of gold. The operation is under the direction of J. P. Millenbach, General Manager, with J. M. Thompson as Assistant General Manager and F. G. Cooke as General Superintendent on the property."

"A hydrocyclic system used for mineral separation at the laboratory scale results in the separation of more than 90% of micas. The system functions only by water and might offer advantages where other methods of mica separation are not available. INTRODUCTIONVarious methods for the separation of micas, wollastonite, and garnet, e.g., screening, flotation, magnetic separation, and heavy liquids, are well known (e.g., Spence, 1929; Bates,I960; Gillson et al., 1960; Benjamin, 1971; Connor and Kolhnar, 1991; Collings and Andrews, 1991). However, where these methods are not available, the separation of micas by a hydrocyclic system developed by Sarafi and Aftabi (1991) may prove to be economic. This note is a brief description of the hydrocyclic system. Minerals and MethodFor testing the recovery of mica and other minerals from different rocks (garnet-mica schist, skarn, and pegmatite), standard minerals were tested first, and then rock samples. Pure mineral standards were prepared from coarse-grained samples of pegmatite, mica schist and skarn; the grain size of the minerals separated was more than I cm. The Hydrocyclic System and Mineral SeparationThe hydrocyclic system is shown schematically in Figure 1. In the first step in mineral separation, mineral and rock samples were crushed, milled, and then sieved to minus 250 plus 125 microns. Approximately 10 gm to 25 gm of the sample were inserted in decanter Dt • The motor pwnps, M1 and M2, were then turned on and the water valve rl was opened. At this time, water was flowing turbulently (30 em3/sec. to 50 em3/sec.) and minerals were separated according to their crystallographic nature, density and!or habit. The fInal separation was done by exit valves r2, r3 and r4, while the motor pwnps were still operating. After each experiment, the rt , r2&apos; r3 and r4 valves were closed and the motor pumps were turned off. Following this, minerals in each decanter and the mter were collected, dried and weighed. The whole time of the experiment was optimized to be about 10 minutes, but varied from 3 to 15 minutes for micas and garnets. respectively."

"THE MISSION TO Offshore Scotland was in my opinion a very worthwhile venture, as it indicated the scope of the offshore oil and gas business and how we might exploit it to the fullest here in Nova Scotia - if our offshore fields eventually become producing fields. The writer was able to attend a considerable number of lectures and as a result gained some valuable know-how on the engineering design, financing and operation of the North Sea oil industry. There are many new fields of technology that had to be developed to overcome the North Sea's hostile environment and a great deal of the same technology will have to be developed to win oil and gas from our continental shelf. The visit left me with several impressions, which in the main are:(1) The high order of investment required to develop offshore oil. The investment ranges from 10 to 20 times that required for a similar output on land. Each barrel of oil costs on the average of about $2,- 500 per barrel per day.(2) Because of the high investments required, before the first oil is produced the field must be brought into production at the earliest possible date and initial lead time from decision to production is less than four years. In the British Petroleum field, working at a depth of 450 feet will require an investment of $900,000,000 to develop a production of 400,000 bbl per day. (3) The size and complexity of equipment required is beyond anything ever imagined. Problems which must be overcome are such factors as water depth, wind velocities, wave height, wave period, long periods of darkness, low temperatures, distance from land, and fog."
