Newmont Mining Corporation?s Carlin (?Carlin?) operation processes roaster feed through a double rotator, dry grinding mill following secondary crushing. Metso Process Technology & Innovation (?PTI?) was involved in a review of crushing and dry grinding circuit operations in August 2009. A number of opportunities for increased throughput were identified in the PTI study. Extended plant trials were conducted in July 2010 to provide justification for possible circuit modifications and if needed, additional equipment. The trials confirmed that a finer crusher product would reduce the build-up of material ahead of the coarse grinding chamber in the double-rotator. Also revealed were material transport and airflow restrictions in the dry grinding circuit that resulted in a high circulating load. The secondary crushing plant demonstrated it was capable of reducing the amount of +¾? material in the mill feed thus increasing dry grinding throughput. However, wet and sticky feed affected screening efficiency resulting in low utilisation of the existing crusher capacity. The open circuit configuration also made it difficult to control crushing circuit product size. For the dry grinding circuit, changes in grinding media size, transfer grate design and increased airflow were recommended to reduce circulating load issues and increase circuit capacity. This paper summarises the crushing and grinding circuit review, the extended site trials performed by PTI and the improvements in dry grinding operation that resulted from this study.

"The coal deposits from Cape Perce on Cape Breton Island have been known to supply the coal requirements of the people living in or visiting the area for close to 300 years.A major block of coal has been identified off Cape Perce, which has several seams from which coal can be taken. The initial development by the Cape Breton Development Corporation will be in the Harbour Seam and constitutes the Donkin-Morien Development Project.The CBDC's confidence in this indicated resource is based on its knowledge of the Sydney Coal Field and from boreholes driven into the block during the summers of1977, 78 and 79. In 1980, further geological data were gathered from surface drilling and an intermediate-depth high-resolution seismic survey. The surface facilities for the Donkin-Morien Development Project will be located on the northern half of the cape, with access declines extending 3.9 km in a north-northeasterly direction to the Donkin block of coal reserves. The development has the potential of supplying all the coal needed f or the future electrical power generation requirements of Nova Scotia for many years to come.The planned mine, for which a project definition study has recently been completed, will have a production rate in excess of 3 million tonnes per year.IntroductionAt the Second CIM District 1 Meeting held in Halifax in October 1980, a background paper on Phase II of the Donkin-Morien Development Project was presented. The project involves a 3.2-million-tonne, saleable, underground coal mine. At that time, the chronological sequence of events had unfolded, starting with the initial boreholes through to the feasibility study, and on through site clearing and site preparation. This led to engineering design contracts for the portals and the two tunnels to be driven to intersect with the Harbour Seam close to 4 km from their entry point."

IN 1952, prompted by the great demand of the Canadian drilling and foundry industries for sodium bentonite, the Geological Department of Magnet Cove Barium Corporation, Limited began an extensive search for bentonite deposits throughout western Canada. Their efforts were rewarded in 1958, when substantial deposits of high quality material were found approximately 100 miles southeast of Edmonton, Alberta. The bentonite material, a part of the Edmonton formation in the Upper Cretaceous, is located approximately nine miles south of the town of Rosalind. The land where the bentonite lies has in places .been eroded by stream and glacial action to form a wide gully, convenient for strip mining methods (see Figure 1). The bentonite bed is almost flat-lying, dipping to the southwest at approximately 12 feet per mile. The main bed is 8 to. 10 feet thick and is covered with 15 to 25 feet of overburden. Before stripping, the area is drilled and sampled to evaluate the quantity and quality of the bentonite.

In the fall of 1961, Cominco dis-carded its long-established system of feeding the lead blast furnaces by narrow-gauge tram and V-cars, and installed an elevated monorail bucket system. This system automatically loads buckets of sinter, along with the correct proportion of coke, and delivers them to any of several designated furnaces. Direct labour usage has been reduced by nine men per day; improved coke proportioning has been achieved; and a major safety hazard has been eliminated. Introduction I N THE fall months of l 961. the system of feeding the lead blast furnaces at the Trail, B.C., smelter of The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada Limited was altered from the tradition-al narrow-gauge railway and V-car method to one employing mono-rail carriers. "Continued and expanded use of underground diesel-powered equipment is considered desirable in order to achieve necessary production capability, particularly when coal becomes increasingly in demand as an energy source. Although diesel engines are derated for underground use, concern has been expressed in many quarters regarding the health effects of worker exposure to diesel-generated particulate and NOx emissions. This concern will increase as Canadian diesel fuel quality becomes heavier and with higher sulphur content. This could result in a requirement to increase ventilation rates by 50%.This paper describes the results of studies of various approaches designed to reduce diesel emissions. Two major approaches have been followed: fuel modification, and emission control hardware development. The results of progress in the development of these approaches will be described.Fuel modification includes the application of water/diesel and methanol/diesel fuel emulsions to the engine. Details of the techniques employed in this approach will be described, together with the effects on diesel emissions. (The paper is concerned with the emission aspects only, not the possible major engine modifications and/ or substitute materials of construction for 100070 methanol.) Use of methanol has the added advantage of acting as a diesel fuel substitute and extender, and there are expectations that underground diesel engines could eventually operate on close to 100% methanol fuel, thereby eliminating particulate emissions. The results of emission control hardware development will also be presented and will include the effects of catalysts, water scrubbers, exhaust filters and exhaust gas recirculation techniques on emissions. A combined systems approach employing a number of these components appears to be the most viable method of controlling the complete array of diesel emissions.This work should culminate in a better understanding of the costs involved in employing fuel modification or emission control hardware relative to the costs of increased ventilation which mpy be necessary to maintain a safe working environment for the underground worker."

"Despite the availability of established, sophisticated methods for planning and designing stable slopes in rock, comparatively little attention is usually paid to the problems of carrying out the excavation. Blasting should be carefully planned to obtain optimum fragmentation as well as steep, stable working and final pit walls. The principal difficulty facing a blast designer is the lack of prior information about the many critical blasting characteristics of the rock mass. The common practise of trial-and-error lasting will eventually lead to a suitable program, but must be repeated time after time in variable geology. This frequently results in many blast-damaged slopes. Recent research indicates that monitoring drill performance will yield a Rock Quality Index which correlates to a Powder Factor value. The drilling can provide a continual supply of data, reflecting changes in the rock mass which enables the selection of an economical powder factor.IntroductionWhen planning to excavate a large-scale rock slope, engineer s will generally spend considerable effort to produce a safe, feasible and economical design. Much time will usually be spent on the field map ping, 'structural geologic studies, surface and subsurface hydrology, determination of strengths and effective friction angles of discontinuities, and finally checking stability with the aid of mathematical and analytical models. If the rock cut is to be along a transportation corridor, the prime justification for this time and effort is to produce a clean, stable slope which will be safe for those travelling or working beneath it. For the walls of an open-pit mine, there is the additional economic incentive to maintain the steepest stable slope angle for the minimum stripping ratio (Stewart and Kennedy)."

The wide range of potential feed materials, process steps, and products in metallurgical facilities means that standard equipment might not be available to adequately meet the project technical and economic needs. Custom designed equipment should be considered only after rigorous research precludes purchasing standard equipment. However, the decision to use custom equipment introduces a new element of risk into the project. To manage the risk, custom equipment design should be developed through the same front end loading (FEL) phases as project development. If more than incremental development of custom equipment is required, appropriate test work or pilot trials are required to test key uncertainties. Important activities during custom equipment design include maintaining clearly defined performance objectives, conducting appropriate reviews, carefully crafting commercial and intellectual property agreements with design and fabrication partners, and assembling a multidisciplinary team with sufficient development expertise.

"Bioleaching uses iron and sulfur-oxidizing bacteria to extract base metals from sulfide minerals. As bioleaching involves breaking the iron-sulfur bonds by ferric attack, the biologically mediated rate of iron oxidation is recognized to play a key role in influencing the overall kinetics. In this study, we investigate the catalytic ability of an indigenous AMD culture for oxidizing Fe(II) in solution. This culture was subsequently adapted on pyrrhotite tailings (0.6% Ni) by gradually increasing the solids loading. Results from this study show that such an adaptation reduces the initial lag phase in the biotic oxidation of Fe(II), thereby allowing for a higher Ni extraction when compared to experiments with an un-adapted culture at a similar solids loading. The use of adapted cultures also helps to reduce the residence time for bioleaching of Ni from pyrrhotite tailings. INTRODUCTIONAs the world demand for pure base metals grows; the mining industry is increasingly faced with the burden of processing lower grade ores and mining waste streams in order to recover the occluded metal VALUES ((Watling, 2006). The extractive metallurgy of nickel from sulfide minerals focuses on using a combination of mineral processing, pyrometallurgical (smelting) and hydrometallurgical techniques to extract Ni from its ore bodies.Pyrrhotite (Fe1-xS) is commonly found in association with pentlandite and chalcopyrite in sulfidic Ni ores, such as those found in Sudbury, Ontario, and in Russia, e.g. Norilsk. The vast majority of this pyrrhotite needs to be removed using mineral processing techniques, in order to minimize the Fe and S contents of the concentrates that proceed on to smelting. If all pyrrhotite were left in the concentrate, much more slag and SO2 would be produced, and the smelter throughput would be limited. Beneficiation of Ni sulfide ores leads to the rejection of unwanted constituents as mining wastes, which may still contain extractable amounts of Ni (Edgar Peek et al., 2010)."

Extraction of sill pillars has always been problematic because of high risk of seismicity and rockburst. Depending on a number of factors, a sill pillar can undergo different failure modes and cause problems in the mine. Of these, sudden and uncontrolled failure of part(s) of the pillar leading to highenergy seismic events and rockbursts is a main concern because it is not possible to predict the location and time of a rockburst apart from its potential to cause extensive damage to the mine structures. To date, a comprehensive technique for sill pillar design and recovery does not exist. Conventional methods of pillar design, such as the pillar stability graph method, are utilized to design stiff sill pillars. In these design approaches, the post-peak response of the pillar-rock system is not considered. This is in part due to a lack of clear and comprehensive understanding of the post-peak behaviour and failure mechanism of sill pillars. In general, the strength of a rockmass is described using a failure criterion. When stresses reach the strength of the rockmass, the rockmass does not necessarily become unstable and knowledge of the loads alone is not enough to assess the instability conditions accurately. In fact, it is not possible to predict instability of rockmass based on the strength/stress ratio alone because instability depends not only on this ratio but also on the loading condition and loading system characteristics. The loading system can dictate whether the sill pillar will go through a stable or unstable failure process. This paper examines the influence of various parameters such as the pillar width to height ratio, the extraction rate, and placement of backfill on the Loading System Stiffness (LSS) and the Pillar Stiffness (PSS). The ultimate goal is to design yielding sill pillars that would yield in a stable manner and will reduce the risk of pillar rockburst. Plane strain finite element analysis is conducted using the generalized Hoek-Brown failure criterion with elastic-brittle-plastic parameters. Examples are given to demonstrate how to calculate these stiffness values and assess the stability condition of sill pillars. It is found that increasing the rate of extraction increases the likelihood of unstable yielding of the pillar as has been found in other studies. Placement of backfill in a timely fashion in the stopes above and below the sill pillars increases the stiffness of the loading system. This indicates that backfilling of stopes while creating the sill pillar increases the likelihood of stable yielding of the sill pillar.

"This work investigates the early stages of precipitation in Al-Mg-Si alloys using a combination of high angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM), selected area electron diffraction (SAED) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Quenching from a high temperature (solution) treatment leaves an alloy in a high-energy unstable state, with solute and vacancies in supersaturation. Thus, already at room temperature (RT) a large driving force exists for solute atoms to cluster and order on the Al matrix positions. DFT calculations indicate that strain alleviation is important at this stage. We observe larger regions of Mg-dominated L10 ordering together with a Si-dominated ordering of smaller clusters in a particular geometry connected to the Si-network found in all the precipitates. In addition, building blocks of the main hardening phase ?'', stabilized by vacancies, are observed at higher, typical pre-aging temperatures.INTRODUCTION Al-Mg-Si (6xxx) alloys are widely used in industry due to a combination of favorable properties such as strength, ductility, corrosion resistance and lightweight. They undergo a complex production route, usually consisting of the following thermo-mechanical steps: casting, homogenization, extrusion or rolling, solution heat treatment (SHT) and artificial aging (AA). The SHT takes place at temperatures above the solvus line in the phase diagram, usually between 500°C and 570°C, followed by a rapid cooling to RT. This ensures that high amounts of solute atoms, uniformly distributed on the cubic face-centered (FCC) Al lattice, together with a large amount of vacancies, are quenched-in. The material is therefore in a super-saturated and unstable state. During the subsequent AA, at temperatures usually between 150°C and 220°C, the solute atoms diffuse and cluster, forming metastable precipitates with needle/ lath/ rod morphologies having the main growth direction along <100>Al. With a maximum alloy solute level (Mg + Si) of only 2%, these precipitates increase material strength up to three times that of pure Al, and are essential for the final material properties. To understand and make better use of this phenomenon, it is imperative to research the nature of the precipitates (such as their atomic structure), measure their key parameters (number density, size, volume fraction) and connect it to material properties (Marioara, Andersen, Zandbergen & Holmestad, 2005; Marioara et al., 2014). "A fundamental component of the Hoek–Brown empirical rock failure criterion is assessing an appropriate mi constant. In developing their empirical criterion Hoek and Brown normalised triaxial test results by dividing the principal stresses at failure by the uniaxial compressive strength to provide mi values for typical rock types. Experience shows that Hoek triaxial tests for individual lithology types commonly have a large inherent scatter. In addition, tests are often conducted on core from random locations, which although being of one parent rock type, display variations in density as well as minor variations in grain size and alteration.This paper presents experience from projects the authors have been involved in which large sample populations of triaxial and UCS tests on similar rock types were available. Geophysical logging data was also available for some projects. The methods used to estimate the compressive strength for each sample and the effects on normalising the data sets are described. The variability of the data and uncertainties and assumptions involved in the process of assigning a mi value from the normalised data are also discussed."

The Jinfeng gold mine is one of the three gold mines that Eldorado Gold has in China and it is the second largest gold mine in China. The mine is located in a relatively remote and mountainous area in the southwestern Guizhou province. The orebody is similar to the Carlin type deposit in Nevada. The mill throughput was designed to treat 3,600 tones per day. The ore comes from open pit mining and underground mining, and is fed to one-stage jaw crushing. The crushed ore is stockpiled, reclaimed and then fed to the SABC grinding circuit. After classification with hydrocylones, the ore is floated, and the resultant concentrate is oxidized biologically in a process known as BIOX®. The oxidized concentrate is then washed in a CCD circuit and finally leached with cyanide in a CIL circuit for gold extraction. Jinfeng produces about 180,000 oz of gold per year. This paper introduces operations and modifications of SABC circuit over the past three years, and then describes some technical characteristic of the SAG mill and other circuits in the processing plant. Major modifications and improvements on the SABC circuit are described in the paper, including: 1. Impacts of grinding ball and mill liner with respect to material selection, quality, hardness, manufacturing methods, and interactions between mill liner and grinding ball. 2. Effect of milling operation parameters on milling efficiency. 3. Impacts of SAG mill scats and modifications of grate size to improve mill throughput. 4. Design and construction of a pebble crushing system, and recycle the crushed scats to the SAG mill to improve mill throughput. With the above-mentioned modifications, 20% increase over the design in mill throughput has been realized over the past three years, and operating cost has been significantly reduced. However, some issues still remain, and thus process modifications and technical innovations are still needed.

As of November 2012, the Alberta government listed 53 oil and gas, oil sands, and mining construction projects either proposed or currently under construction. These industrial plant construction projects have an estimated value greater than 105 million dollars. A common construction method employed for industrial plant projects is fast-track construction, which is used to reduce construction time. Contractors begin fast-track construction with highly generic scheduling information. This high level schedule turns into a lower level schedule as more detailed information becomes available. From a contractor?s perspective, a challenge faced using fast-track construction is the visualization of generic and constantly changing project schedules. This paper discusses the use of a Plant Information Modeling (PIM) system, designed to create a 4D animation to visualize project schedules for fast-track industrial plant construction projects. The proposed PIM system creates a modified project schedule by obtaining specific information from a generic construction schedule. Obtaining the information involves grouping schedule activities in accordance with the level of detail in a 3D model, and the level of detail in a project schedule. The modified project schedule is then used in conjunction with a 3D model to simulate the construction sequence in the form of a 4D animation. This allows for 4D visualization of project activities, installation dates, and crane movements. Furthermore, as engineering reaches completion, the PIM system creates a streamlined channel for schedule information updates to be easily uploaded into the model for a more accurate 4D visualization. Through analyzing a nonmodular construction case study, this paper discusses the successes and benefits of the PIM system for 4D visualization, such as increased productivity, shortened construction time, increased constructability, and decreased field costs.

In 1997, damage as a result of Castrol R40 entering the INCO pressure carbonyl plant carrier gas stream was becoming increasingly severe. The oil in the gas stream was adversely affecting both equipment availability and process control resulting in rising unit costs. The main source of the Castrol R40 was determined to be the carrier gas and low pressure gas blowers. Plant personnel initiated a plan to prevent the Castrol R40 from entering the carrier gas stream by replacing the mechanical shaft seals with Ferrofluidics seals on these blowers. The following paper details a brief case history of the Castrol R40 in the carrier gas including impact on the plant. This will be followed by a technical discussion of the new sealing arrangement that was developed by plant personnel, Roots Blower and Ferrofluidics. Lastly, this paper will update the status of the blower upgrade project and document the results to date.

Extensive and Intensive Prospecting As often pointed out, the search for new ore deposits may be carried on along two widely divergent lines. It may be either extensive or intensive. By extensive prospecting we mean a search for mineralized outcrops conducted over large and more or less virgin tracts of land, followed by a test of the practical value of any discovery made, the test being limited to the immediate vicinity of the outcrop. Extensive prospecting, was, in fact, the only policy known to the early prospectors. of the American continent and is still the rule in the remote sections of the Canadian Shield and in the African wilderness. It can be further characterized by the lack of emphasis placed on geological and other technical means as an aid to the search for ore. However, very little virgin ground is left, nowadays, for a man or a company to test their luck, and whatever is left is so remote from the necessary means of development that any new discovery will require considerable delay and expenditures to be amenable to profitable mining. On the other band, a great many of the favourable and still unexplored areas (and this is particularly true in Canada) are overburdened to such an extent that outcrops of bed-rock are extremely scarce and extensive prospecting is nearly impossible. Intensive prospecting, to the contrary, must be understood as a detailed search for ore carried on over limited areas in districts already known to be mineralized and covering regional structures whose relation to mineral deposits bas been estahlis.hed with a fair degree ot certainty. The search for deep-seated deposits in the vicinity of successful mines is a perfect example of intensive prospecting. As a matter of fact, the majority of the geologists employed by the mining industry are engaged in some kind of intensive prospecting.

HYDROMETAL is using suitable technology to reintroduce lost metal units into the industrial cycle, thereby saving resources and energy while keeping the environment cleaner. Hydrometal is treating on average 60000 t per year of complex materials through a unique hydrometallurgical recycling concept. Zn, Cu, Sn, and Pb are the most important in volume, but in the last 15 years, Hydrometal has also developed a few specific recycling treatments for the minor metals including Ge, In, Co, etc. In 2010, Hydrometal commenced the recycling of RE (Rare Earths) from wastes generated by the RE refining industry in Europe and has decided to initiate new recycling projects for the RE recovery from the magnet or glass industries. Two case studies of recycling of materials in our integrated hydrometallurgical facility (Hydrométal) in Belgium are discussed: recycling of cerium from polishing sludges; and recycling of Ni- Co from cement produced in the zinc industry.

Application of integrally bladed disks (blisks) is of increasing interest in compressors of aero engines. Blisks are preferred due to their potential for size and weight reduction, for increased performance and for reduced manufacturing costs compared to conventionally bladed disks. Erosion of the blisk aerofoils in service reduces engine performance, and can result in short shop visit cycles. This significantly increases the life cycle cost of these components, particular when considering that eroded aerofoils can&apos;t be exchanged easily for blisks during refurbishment. Shop visit cycle times can be extended and maintenance costs can be reduced through the application of an effective protective coating. The ongoing development of an erosion resistant coating and deposition process suitable for coating complex blisk geometries is described here. The coating is a multilayered W /TiB2 system exhibiting superior erosion resistance compared to known single- and other multilayer concepts. A modified sputter process is used to enable coating even of blisk geometries with shadowed surface to competitive recurring cost.

Traditionally, there have been three main methods for iron removal in the hydrometallurgical production of zinc. These methods are atmospheric precipitation of jarosite or goethite and pressurised precipitation of hematite. Jarosite precipitation is without doubt the leading and the most commonly used technology for iron removal. However, jarosite precipitation has some drawbacks, such as a low iron content (and, thus, high residue volume), high moisture content after filtration and often a high zinc content. These features make any environmentally acceptable way of using or disposing of jarosite more expensive, as compared to hematite and goethite. The importance of environmental regulations has grown in the zinc industry during the last decade, which will have an increasing effect on new investments. Hematite has several advantages over jarosite, such as a high iron content, low moisture and low zinc content. An important advantage of hematite is that it is suited for further use in the cement industry. However, until now the need for autoclave equipment has limited the spread and implementation of hematite precipitation in the zinc industry. Outokumpu Technology Oy has recently developed an alternative method for iron removal, which is the atmospheric precipitation of hematite. A patented method for precipitating hematite at atmospheric pressure is presented and compared with conventional methods for iron removal. The process conditions, the quality of the hematite precipitate and the environmental aspects are also discussed.
