Preceded by brief general considerations such as the development of the mining industry in. the Province of Quebec, the choice of plant location, the types of problems studied etc., the paper gives a complete description of this new research and treatment center for metallic, non-metallic and asbestos ores. Facilities for carrying out operations in the three sections of the plant -the sampling section, the ore treatment section and the asbestos section -are fully discussed as well as laboratory facilities for (a) the preliminary testing of ores prior to pilot plant treatment and (b) the grading and testing of asbestos fibre. K+S Potash Canada GP (KSPC) is part of the K+S Group, one of the world's leading suppliers of standard and speciality fertilizers and the world?s leading salt producer. Globally, the K+S Group employs more than 14,000 people. The K+S share ? the only commodities stock on the German DAX index ? is listed on all German stock exchanges. Legacy, K+S Group?s most recent project, is a greenfield solution potash mine and production plant in the south of the Canadian province of Saskatchewan. Therefore K+S will invest 4.1 billion CAD. With the expected commissioning in summer 2016 the company projects to reach the two-million-tonnesmark of production capacity at the new location at the end of 2017. The gradual extension of the annual capacity to 2.86 million tonnes of potash products will occur afterwards. The Legacy Project will be Saskatchewan?s first new potash mine in nearly 40 years. It is one of the world?s most economically attractive potash projects. The project will contribute to Saskatchewan?s growth through employment, tax revenues, utilities, and local partnerships. Located in the southern part of Saskatchewan?s potash belt, the deposit is too deep to be mined conventionally due to rock mechanics and high temperatures. Legacy will therefore be a solution mine. Proximity to the urban centers of Regina and Moose Jaw is imperative, with their workforces and economy, as well as access to highways, railway carriers and, most importantly in the prairies, water. With this unique project setting and mining technique, we are convinced that Legacy will be one of the most efficient, economic, sustainable and safe potash facilities in the world.

Palabora Mining Copper (PMC) has two autogenous mills that have been in operation since 1976. The mills were originally designed to treat 30 000 t/d of open cast copper ore in a closed circuit with cyclones. As the ore body went deeper the open cast method of mining was changed to block caving, a consequence of this was the dolerite content (hardest barren material) increased significantly, increasing the production rate of pebbles and thus reducing the milling capacity. In order to cope with the increased ore hardness and to increase mill capacity, a second ball milling stage and pebble crushing were incorporated to the circuit. The above actions created new challenges to the circuit operation and bottlenecks in different areas of the milling circuit. This paper reports the holistic work performed on the Palabora autogenous milling circuit including the implementation of a mill constraint control scheme, the implementation of a pebble removal system from the circuit and a new circuit configuration. The achieved plant stability and increment of ore throughput are also reported in this paper.

Kinross Paracatu started the operation of the new gold processing plant in the end of 2008, being composed by one SAG mill and two ball mills. During the first year of operation the plant had several problems related to stability and throughput capacity, mainly due to low grinding efficiency of the ball mills. In this period many actions were taken to maximize the throughput rate. Among the actions are reducing the size of balls in the mills, increasing the ball charge in the SAG mill, changing cyclone configuration and return of circulating load to SAG mill. With better stability of the circuit, the second stage of improvements has begun with the objective of increasing throughput rate and also reducing operation costs. Among the actions are the optimization of ball charge in the mills and a better operational control of cyclone parts. After two years of operation was obtained a significant increase in plant capacity, but still requires the addition of a third ball mill in order to maximize the use of SAG mill, which has spare capacity.

A new filtration model based on porous media transport theory is presented. It predicts capacity and final moisture content in the filtered cake as a function of design and operational variables at the plant. FilterSim® is the computer code where this new model is programmed. Application of FilterSim® to ten-month operation of an industrial copper concentrate filtration plant is shown on a daily basis and using a single set of internal parameters for the whole period. Average error is less than 5%, both in capacity and moisture estimation. FilterSim® abilities to optimize industrial filtration plants as well as to estimate future budgets are illustrated with several real examples.

"These studies address the relationship between mill media sizing and its grinding efficiency. Starting with the results from a review of the literature, the issues of initial media sizing for a new ball milling circuit, and then optimal media sizing for an existing milling operation, were studied. The Functional Performance parameters “Mill Grinding Efficiency” and cumulative “Mill Grinding Rates” from both plant and test-scale equipment were used, and provide valuable new insight into this topic. A plant media sizing diagnostic tool is presented, as are newly developed testing equipment and evaluation methods, and recent case studies.REVIEW OF MEDIA SIZING LITERATURE For a plant metallurgist to answer the question “How can I maximize plant profit by manipulating this grinding circuit variable?” she must know what effect the variable has on grinding circuit efficiency. Despite the significant cost of grinding media and its potential effect on production capacity, the ‘best’ media sizing remains ill-defined for any given ball mill circuit in the industry today. The underlying reasons for this will be discussed. But the importance of this issue drove Metcom and its industrial partners to take on the challenge of how to engineer the ball charge for an existing grinding circuit. In the absence of any proven method, the first step was a review of the literature. Sponsored by Cleveland-Cliffs, Inc., a broad review of the literature was undertaken, producing “The Effect of Media Sizing on Ball Milling Efficiency” (McIvor, 1997). Among hundreds of publications that were reviewed that discuss the topics of media sizing or wear, forty-five were studied in detail. These were grouped into: plant experiences; laboratory and pilot plant investigations; media wear studies; population balance modeling studies; and general papers on ball milling which included the topic of media sizing. The reader is encouraged to refer to that review. The findings remain unchanged, although some relevant papers have been written since (e.g. Staples et al, 1997; Banasi et al, 1999; Orford et al, 2006; LaMarsh, 2015). The mining industry is facing declining feed grades which require the mining and processing of larger volumes of material per tonne of product. Pre-concentration aims to remove barren material at as coarse a particle size and as early in the process as possible to reduce processing costs, energy consumption, water losses, and greenhouse gas emissions while increasing production and profitability. This may be achieved using bulk ore sorting—the separation of barren gangue from a fully loaded conveyor belt based on the grade as measured or inferred from a sensor. This paper evaluates the technical and economic viability of bulk ore sorting for the PanAust Phu Kham copper deposit in Lao PDR. Bulk ore sorting technology is described briefly along with discussion of appropriate sensor and diversion systems for the Phu Kham operation. To evaluate the economic implications, the actual mined material and costs from 2014 were used as the base-case. Sampling data was not available; therefore, the ore grade variability that would feed a bulk ore sorter was estimated using geo-statistical tools based on mine grade control data. The sorter performance when treating this material was simulated considering the accuracy of the sensor measurement and errors associated with material diversion. The impact on inferred cash flow was estimated for several different scenarios considering the additional costs for sorter operation and reject handling. The evaluation demonstrated that bulk ore sorting at Phu Kham has the potential to increase the amount of metal in product and/or reduce processing plant throughput (and costs) to improve the annual inferred cash flow for the conditions investigated. The sorter is the gatekeeper – only material above the cut-off grade (value-adding) reports to the processing plant; no waste dilutes the feed. Likewise, above cutoff grade material is not lost to waste; preventing lost revenue.

The Altair process digests ilmenite concentrate in high-chloride HC1 solution, with complete dissolution of titanium and iron. The Fe(III) ions are reduced to the ferrous form, and the solution is cooled to produce crystalline ferrous chloride. Titanium is transferred by solvent extraction into a purified, concentrated Ti stream, which is spray-hydrolyzed to produce TiO2 hydrate. The hydrate is further calcined with additives to generate a high-quality pigment. All the chloride streams are recycled. In the original flowsheet, the iron chloride is pyrohydrolyzed by spray roasting to regenerate 18% HCl, which is subsequently converted to HC1 gas and water by pressure-swing distillation. A modified flowsheet includes an alternative to iron chloride spray roasting, producing more concentrated HCl and decreasing the amount of solution to be distilled. Improvements in digestion, solvent extraction and final pigment production are also introduced. A 100 t/y pilot plant is being built and will test the new concepts and confirm the overall water, acid and impurity balances of the process.

The effect of grain refinement on the tensile and fatigue crack propagation behavior of sand cast magnesium alloy AM60B has been investigated in the present study, C2Cl6 in the amount of 0,3% was used to grain refine the melt, The fracture toughness tests were conducted in laboratory air at room temperature (25°C) using a sine-wave cyclic frequency of 20Hz and a load ratio of R = 0,1, The response in the Paris's regime and the critical stress range were determined, Preliminary findings have shown that C2Cl6 has a significant effect on both the tensile properties and fatigue crack propagation of the alloy tested, Grain refinement increased both the yield and ultimate tensile strength by more than 46%, and decreased the crack growth rate from 2,7 to 1,4 MPa Vm , However, the grain size seems to have a smaller effect on threshold stress intensity factor range. The fracture surfaces of specimens were examined optically and under the scanning electron microscope (SEM) to determine the relationship between grain size and fatigue properties.

A sulphide zinc concentrate (Zn-40%) has been leached in sulphuric and chloride media to optimize the conditions for the recovery of zinc and copper. Previous results showed that extractions of 95% zinc and 20% copper can be achieved in just one stage, after two hours of leaching at 80°C with a solution 0.5M in Fe2(SO4)3 and H2SO4 and a solid/liquid ratio of 5%. This work presents the results obtained in the leaching experiments carried out in sulphuric and chloride media using two and three crosscurrent stages and a countercurrent process simulation for a solid/liquid ratio of 10%.

"As real estate for new development in urban settings becomes scarce, commercial high rises are being constructed above open passenger rail tracks and vehicular roadways. Rail and roadway overbuilds are treated as tunnels requiring emergency ventilation systems for train or automobile and truck fires. The value of floor space in residential and office towers poses challenges to engineers responsible for designing fan rooms and shafts for tunnel ventilation systems within the towers. This paper describes a case study of the unique incorporation of tunnel ventilation fan plants in the overbuild structure of a passenger railyard and an adjacent roadway.INTRODUCTIONTunnel ventilation systems are required for passenger rail and transit (subway) tunnels by the NFPA 130 Standard for Fixed Guideway Transit and Passenger Rail Systems, and the NFPA 502 Standard for Road Tunnels, Bridges, and Other Limited Access Highways requires tunnel ventilation systems for vehicular (road) tunnels. Passenger rail and transit (subway) tunnels are typically ventilated with a series of shafts placed longitudinally along the tunnels to provide piston relief for normal train operations and emergency ventilation of train fires utilizing reversible axial flow fans. The shafts are incorporated in dedicated ventilation buildings that house the tunnel ventilation fans and starters, switchgear to power the fans and other equipment and systems in the building, Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) to control fan operation with Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) software, and HVAC fans and ductwork to ventilate the spaces in the building. These ventilation buildings may also provide access to the tunnels below with ingress/egress stairs for use by first responders and firefighters entering the tunnels and train or transit system passengers exiting the tunnels in an emergency. The performance of a tunnel boring machine (TBM) depends on the efficiency of the cutters, which can be influenced by geological conditions and rock mass properties. In this study, a three-dimensional numerical model, based on a discrete element method, was used to evaluate the effects of joint orientation and its spacing on the fragmentation process by a TBM cutter. Several models were constructed to study the effects of variable orientation; these models incorporated different spacing, variable spacing, different orientations on the fragmentation process, and different sections of the block model. Three parameters, consisting of induced tensile stress, induced shear stress and maximum displacement, were calculated. The stress in each section that forms chips was considered as critical stress; critical joint spacing and orientation in each section were determined. Results show that the critical orientation was in the range of 45 to 60º, where there was a possibility to achieve the maximum penetration rate. The critical joint spacing was 200 mm and, by increasing joint spacing, the value of critical stress decreased significantly. Furthermore, joint orientation could influence more than joint spacing in the rock cutting process.

"Geological data, production trends and current projects underway suggest that enough molybdenum will be available from more diversified sources to meet the world's growing demands. The growth in molybdenum consumption has been primarily related to its beneficial effects as an alloying agent in steel. This rapid growth has been deliberately fostered by stable prices, adequate supply and application research. The molybdenum industry is now in a process of change which has been seen in several other metals, such as aluminum and nickel. As supply sources have become more diversified, the market has become more competitive. The recent drop in consumption has led to excess production capacity, accumulation of substantial producer inventories and increased market uncertainties. While consumption is expected to increase in the next two to three years, it will take some time to absorb the excess capacity and inventory. The increased proportion of by-product capacity indicates that prices may become more variable. Producer discipline will be required to prevent serious price erosion in times of surplus. Future prices may not continue to increase with inflation. For the longer term, several factors favour the increased consumption of molybdenum. Engineering requirements are becoming more severe and molybdenum alloys can help to meet these changing needs. In addition, consumers can rely on a large and increasing supply of molybdenum. A 7 per cent growth rate in consumption can probably be sustained through the next decade, but new applications and reasonably stable prices will be needed to make this possible."

This paper describes two micro-beam analytical techniques(Dynamic SIMS and TOF-SIMS) which have become an intricate part of a comprehensive analytical approach for precious metal (PM) ore characterization and process mineralogy or deportment studies. The value of the D-SIMS technique is its capacity for accurate analysis in the sub ppm range along with the ability to produce high resolution elemental maps. The TOF-SIMS is significant for speciating and quantifying preg-robbed Au on the surface of carbonaceous material. In combination with traditional assays, the two techniques can provide invaluable information regarding the distribution of PMs within an ore along with providing insight into potential sources of PM loss in processing or where losses have occurred in process streams.

"This presentation will provide information and facts on the drilling and blasting within a frozen shaft using a full face methodology. The Author will briefly discuss the history of the sinking of a frozen shaft in Saskatchewan, the challenges faced, and the solutions delivered. The case study will include a discussion describing the series of events that led to the decision to adopt a full face blasting methodology. The case study will describe key elements such as the drilling pattern, hole size and depth, explosive products and blast vibration monitoring systems. INTRODUCTION During the shaft sinking process at a project in Saskatchewan, it was recommended that a drill & blast benching method be utilized. Following an evaluation of the site, the geological conditions proved amenable to a ground freezing system that would stabilize the rock formations and prevent inflows of water into the shaft (Table 1).The shaft sinking process required that the ground surrounding the proposed shaft be frozen by drilling several near vertical freeze holes radially at a specified distance from the edge of the proposed shaft excavation. This would allow for the circulation of a chilled brine solution down the freeze holes. The circulation is achieved by means of stainless steel pipes encased within each other to provide a delivery and return conduit for the brine (Figure 1). As a result of this periphery freezing, the ground within the shaft excavation is also predominately frozen.The finished internal diameter of the shaft was 5.5 meters with varying overall excavation diameters to facilitate different liner designs used for various rock formations. For the most part, the fully unsupported/unfinished excavated diameter of the shaft varied from 6.9 meters to 8.5 meters depending on the zone excavated. The challenge was that the proposed drill and blast excavation method posed a significant risk due to the potential to damage the freeze wall and pipes during blasting. The decision was made to commence the excavation through mechanical excavation (i.e. chip and cut) methods then change to a drill and blast method utilizing a split benching design. Through this process, the team encountered five main challenges: 1. Sub-horizontal geological structures and slips that affected blasting performance and sometimes resulted in a sloping surface to the top of the bench; 2. Confined working area for the crews and equipment due to a limited work area as a result of utilizing the split (half) bench drill and blast methodology; 3. Mechanical chipping and cutting of the one-meter buffer zone to the final shaft diameter; 4. Crews working on extremely slippery uneven frozen rock and ice surfaces, which affected safety and efficiency; 5. Establishing a blast vibration monitoring system to determine if the drilling and blasting of the full shaft excavation diameter were acceptable."

"Boliden Harjavalta Oy has a long tradition in the Finnish metal industry starting from the 1930's. The Smelter consists of copper and nickel flash smelting lines. Off-gases are captured in the acid plant to produce sulfur products. During the early years of production, the surrounding environment suffered from high SO2 and dust emissions. The first acid plant started in 1947, a few years after commissioning of the smelter. The flash smelting method was developed and commissioned in 1949. This created the basis for today’s environmentally sound metal production. Recent air emission reductions are related to treating lean ventilation and granulation gases. Emissions from the stacks are monitored with continuous measurement devices. SO2 and PM10 concentrations are also measured from the residential area and reported online in cooperation with Harjavalta community and other local industry.INTRODUCTIONProductionBoliden Harjavalta Oy smelts copper and nickel concentrates and refines copper in the western part of Finland. The copper concentrates come from external copper mines mainly in South America and Europe. Concentrates are unloaded at the Pori harbor and transported to Harjavalta by train from a distance of about 60 km. Boliden Harjavalta Oy has operations in Harjavalta and Pori. The smelter in Harjavalta produces copper anodes that are transported via railway to the copper refinery in Pori. The anodes are electro-refined into copper cathodes and by-products like Se, Ag, Au and Pt/Pd concentrate. In the Harjavalta smelter SO2 containing gases are delivered to a sulphuric acid plant where sulphuric acid and liquid sulphur dioxide are produced.Our nickel smelter smelts nickel concentrates on a tolling basis to produce nickel matte for customer needs. SO2 containing off-gases are delivered to the sulphuric acid plant for sulphur capture and modification into products.All our operations are certified according to the Quality, Environmental and Occupational Health and Safety Standards ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001. Boliden Harjavalta Oy was the first company in Finland operating in the metal and technology industry to be certified according to the Energy Management Standard EN 16001, currently this certification is done according to ISO 50001."

A factorial study was performed to investigate the relative effects of temperature, copper concentration and meso-2,3-dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA) concentration on the performance of thiosulfate leaching of gold. A total of 24 leaching experiments were performed representing eight unique combinations of high-low levels of the three factors performed in triplicate. All investigations were performed in an electrochemical cell with an electrolyte composed of 0.1 M sodium thiosulfate with a combination of copper (either 0 mM or 1 mM) and DMSA (either 0???or 1µM). All leaching investigations were conducted under open circuit while the electrolyte, which was open to the atmosphere and mechanically stirred, was maintained at either 25°C or 50°C. After 1.5h of leaching the amount of gold in solution was quantified using ICP-MS analysis from an aliquot of the electrolyte. Results indicate that DMSA addition improved gold leaching performance, most notably at 50°C and with addition of copper. Under this unique condition, the quantity of gold in solution was reproducibly and significantly above the average response of all other factors studied.

"Rare earths adsorbed on clay minerals are easily recovered via ion exchange during leaching with inorganic monovalent salt solutions. The leaching efficiency of various salts at 0.5M and 25°C was investigated as a function of cation type and salt system (sulphates vs. chlorides). (NH4)2SO4 was identified as the lixiviant of choice and a procedure was established to investigate the influence of lixiviant concentration, temperature, pH and agitation on desorption kinetics and REE extraction levels. It was determined that the kinetics were fast and the optimum leaching conditions (for >80% total REE extraction) required pH below 5 and moderate temperatures (<50°C). INTRODUCTIONRare earth elements (REE) are at the core of numerous advanced applications due to their various uses in high strength permanent magnets, lasers, automotive catalytic converters, fiber optics/superconductors, and electronic devices (as phosphors in TVs and display screens for computers and cell phones). Because of the ongoing development of new technologies, there is an increased demand for REE in the international market, with emphasis on identifying new resources to insure an adequate supply for present and future use. World production of rare earths is dominated by China, the United States and Australia; however, in terms of resources, China dominates the world potential with reserves estimated to be over 90% of the total (Chen, 2011).The main commercially significant REE sources, as reviewed by O’Driscoll (1991) are bastnasite (carbonate) and monazite (phosphate) minerals, containing up to 70% wt. rare earth oxides (REO). In spite of being high grade, these ores are associated with elevated recovery costs due to difficulty in mining, separation and beneficiation. Moreover, aggressive conditions are required to solubilize the REE from the mineral, such as leaching with hot, concentrated acids or baking in 70% NaOH (Gupta & Krishnamurti, 2005)."
