"At a current mining rate of 3,750 tons per day, La Mine Doyon is currently the largest gold mine in Canada. La Mine Doyon is an open pit gold mine located in the Abitibi area of Northwestern Quebec. The project is a joint venture between Soquem, a Quebec Crown Corporation in the resource development field and Lac Minerals Ltd., a publicly-held, resource development company. Lac Minerals is the managing company and operator of the project.Doyon went into production in 1980 on a very limited basis at 600 tons/day, and has seen a step wise increase to the current rate of 3,750 tons/day. Initially, all the ore was processed at Noranda Mines, Horne Division as flux for the copper smelter. The East Malartic Mill in Malartic was then upgraded and began processing Doyon ore. The third step in the progressive increase of throughput was the commissioning of the Doyon mill in November of 1982. Doyon ore is currently being processed at all three locations.During 1983, an exploration ramp was driven to explore the ore below the ultimate pit depth. Current plans indicate the sinking of a shaft and the commencement of underground mining during the next 2 or 3 years.Since its humble beginning, La Mine Doyon has always been a success; ore reserves have been extended to the east and the west and will soon be confirmed at depth, the mining and processing rates have been increased 6 fold, and the recovery has been increased from a designed recovery of 85% to over 95%. "Twin Metals Minnesota LLC, (TMM) has recently completed a prefeasibility study evaluating the development and operation of an underground copper (Cu), nickel (Ni), platinum (Pt), palladium (Pd), and gold (Au) mining project on the Maturi deposit in northeastern Minnesota.The Maturi deposit is a magmatic Cu-Ni-sulphide deposit occurring along the basal contact of the South Kawishiwi intrusion, comprised of heterogeneous troctolites to gabbros forming a tabular body designated the BMZ (basal mineralized zone). These rocks provide the major gangue mineralogy (plagioclase, olivine, and clinopyroxene) with local, minor rock-forming orthopyroxene, biotite, magnetite, and ilmenite. Altered silicates exist within local fracture and/or alteration zones, which are commonly associated with minor faults in the regional area. The Maturi deposit is comprised of four main mineralized zones within the BMZ, referred to as Stage 1, Stage 2 (S2), Stage 3 (S3), and Upper Heterogeneous. Chalcopyrite, cubanite, pentlandite, and pyrrhotite are mainly hosted within the S2 and S3 units, with talnakhite frequently occurring within the S3 unit.A cross-discipline approach combining geology, geochemistry, metallurgy, QEMSCAN™ mineralogy, and mine planning has been implemented to develop a preliminary geometallurgical model and life of mine metallurgical performance forecast. This paper provides an overview of the methods that were used to develop the model and forecast, and discusses the advantages of such a model in project development and evaluation.INTRODUCTIONThe TMM Project proposes mining a copper-nickel-palladium-platinum-gold-silver (Cu-Ni-PGM) magmatic sulphide deposit situated in the Duluth Complex of northeastern Minnesota, USA. The prefeasibility study proposes a 45,000 million tonnes per day mine and concentrator facility to produce two saleable concentrates. The mine will access two separate deposits, Maturi and Maturi Southwest. Saleable concentrates are the final products of the sequential flotation plant where a high grade Cu concentrate is produced followed by a Ni concentrate."

The recent 20 years witnessed a boom and bust in the nickel laterite industry. Most notoriously is the story of the first three Western Australian nickel laterite projects which all suffered major ramp-up issues. Many hard lessons were learned by the industry and it has been widely reported that the major contributing factors included insufficient testing as well as a limited understanding of the materials handling characteristics at the front-end stage of the flowsheet. This paper compares the current "race to production" in the REE industry to the laterite industry 20 years ago and addresses the fundamental question: ‘Have mining and exploration companies with rare earth projects learned from past lessons and are they doing sufficient and appropriate testwork to prevent failure’? The authors will provide the perspective of a commercial metallurgical laboratory that has gone through the laterite cycle and is active in the present REE cycle.

Brake testing of large mining trucks was initiated in British. Columbia in 1969 following an accident involving the failure of the service brakes of a l00-ton electric-drive truck. Some selected results of the 1976 brake test program are presented and discussed ?in this paper . The tests were conducted on end- dump trucks having load capacities ranging from 85 to 235 tons. All tests were made with the vehicles fully loaded operating on downhill grades varying from 8 to 10 %. Stopping distances were measured from initial speeds varying between 10 and 39 mph. The results are adequate, in most cases, to determine the "ultimate" capabilities of the service brakes of varying models and sizes of haulage trucks operating in British Columbia mines.

"A study of the geological features of known occurrences of mineralization in Gaspe is the basis for a classification. Nickel, chromite, asbestos and some copper are pre-or syn-Taconic, whereas the most important deposits are tied to granitic post-Taconic stocks. Most occurrences are clearly related to igneous rocks: nickel, chromium and asbestos to Ordovician serpentinite; copper to volcanic rocks of different ages; and copper, zinc and lead to acidic intrusions with apparent zoning. Some lead-zinc deposits lying between the Grande Greve and York Lake formations are stratigraphically controlled. Some occurrences are tied to faults; e.g., the nickel-copper mineralization along the North Grand Pabos fault. The valuation of mineral properties in the U.S. is only partially regulated. The regulations which have jurisdiction or impact appear to have such mainly as a consequence of unintended fallout, since the regulations were designed for other purposes. Court case history can also be important. The combined results are a mixture of bad and good, with important lessons to be learned. Since 1981, the Securities and Exchange Commission has prohibited U.S. listed companies from reporting quantitative estimates of mineralization and the value of mineralization, other than proven and probable reserves. This results in the minerals appraiser (valuator) working with a shortage of data in his everyday work, both on the subject property and in sales analysis. Between 1989 and 1995, all 50 states and essentially all federal agencies adopted the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP) for real property appraisals (valuations). The major national appraisal societies also require their members to abide by USPAP. A significant portion of minerals appraisals must now follow these standards. This paper will discuss the content of USPAP. It provides a very good framework for the valuation of a minerals property or a mine, both as real property and as a business. However, the credentialing standards for real property appraisers are now prohibitive for minerals appraisers.

"This paper examines the change in surface properties of the Polyurea used on spirals at different operational times: unused spiral, 28 months in operation and 58 months in operation. This is being done to investigate the alleged statement that spirals have a decrease in spiral separation efficiency after a certain period of operational time. Observing the surface characteristics under 1.5x and 36x magnification it can be concluded that the surface roughness decreases with increased operational time. This may be explained by a decrease in air inclusions and streak lines as the spiral surface wears. Decreased surface roughness should in theory have a beneficial effect on spiral separation performance. This leads to the conclusion that if a decrease in spiral separation performance is observed after a certain period of operation, it can’t be attributed to the change in surface properties. Uneven wear of the spiral surface, material creep or application of force to the spiral will change the profile of the spiral and could cause an adverse effect on spiral separation performance. The metallurgical test work showed that the best results are obtained at 30 - 35% solids by mass in the spiral feed. The iron recovery was significantly higher in the new spiral in comparison to the 2012 and 2010 spirals. The mass yield to concentrate in the new spiral was approximately three times more than for the older spirals. ABSTRACT Understanding process histories and worker exposures in nickel production operations is critical in determining the role nickel compounds play in respiratory cancer incidence. As part of a series on Vale Canada’s (previously known as Inco) nickel processing operations, this paper includes descriptions of Ni electrolytic operations at refineries in Port Colborne, Ontario (1922–1984), and Thompson, Manitoba (1961–present). Industrial hygiene measurements, by area and personal sampling, of workplace aerosols at these operations are reported.

"The annual budget for the repair and maintenance of equipment at Syncrude Canada Ltd. is in excess of $450 million. Of this amount, a significant portion can be attributed to the loss of material on various pieces of equipment throughout the operation. In order to effectively battle the different wear and corrosion mechanisms that lead to material loss, it is important to understand how materials behave in the environments in which they are used. Through the work carried out at Syncrude, and work conducted with various external collaborators, significant improvements in both equipment reliability and productivity have been achieved. This paper will review some recent field trials where materials research has demonstrated the potential for significant improvements in equipment run life and reduced maintenance costs. These field trials will demonstrate the need for understanding the interaction between various damage mechanisms and the materials used in different services. The paper will also discuss current areas of focus along with future directions for further work. IntroductionSyncrude Canada Ltd, located in northern Alberta, Canada, operates a mining, extraction, and upgrading facility that removes bitumen from oil sand to produce synthetic crude oil. Oil sand is mined from the orebody using conventional open pit mining techniques. Recently, the mining scheme has changed from a dragline/bucketwheel/conveyor system to a shovel/truck/crusher/hydrotransport operation as depicted in Figure 1. Since the start of production in 1978, the identification, development and application of wear protection has been an ongoing challenge due to the abrasive nature of the oil sands and the massive volumes of materials that are moved. The use of various materials and application processes along with component design modifications has resulted in significant improvements in both productivity and reliability (Adamic et al., 1995; Llewellyn, 1996, 1997; Anderson et al., 1998; Chiovelli et al., 1998).In an effort to continuously improve the operation, Syncrude has been quick to adopt new wear technologies. As seen in Figure 2, since the start of operation, a variety of materials have been used to increase wear performance and ultimately equipment reliability and availability. Although Figure 2 does not show a time axis, the bottom axis may also be used to represent a time progression for the predominate use of these materials at Syncrude. Tungsten carbide metal matrix composite (WC-MMC) overlays are currently the materials of choice for most of Syncrude’s critical production applications. Metal matrix composite overlay technology has potential for significant improvements and Syncrude is actively working with powder consumable manufacturers to advance this technology."

"The geology and origins of volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits in the Abitibi belt of northwestern Quebec have been the subject of discussion since the discovery of the Horne orebodies in Noranda in 1923.The present Noranda version of the VMS model characterizes the ideal deposit as a stratabound, base-metal accumulation that is in close spatial relationship with hydrothermal alteration and stockwork zones, felsic lava domes, coarse phreatic-pyroclastic breccias, and subvolcanic intrusions that characterize vent- and proximal{acies submarine volcanic environments. Deposits tend to occur in a favorable stratigraphic interval within a mining camp, and this is well-documented in the Rouyn-Noranda and Matagami camps.However, in recent years many VMS deposits have been shown to deviate from the ideal Noranda-type. For example, the Ansi/ deposit is characterized by sulphide-bearing alteration zones that extend far above the massive sulfide lenses, and by abundant magnetite immediately underlying massive sulfide. The Horne deposit appears to lack the typical chloritic alteration pipe underlying the massive sulfide lenses, as well as laterally-equivalent exhalite horizons. The Horne and Quemont deposits, besides being the two giants of the camp, are particularly rich in gold, whereas others, such as WaiteAmulet and Millenbach, have low gold values. Finally, some deposits in the Noranda camp, such as the Ansil, Corbet and Mobrun mines, are outside the favorable stratigraphic interval. Therefore, it would appear that part of the key to renewing base metal reserves in northwestern Quebec is the use of evolving descriptive-genetic models that incorporate geological variations like those cited above."

"Selectively recovering pentlandite from high levels of pyrrhotite presents a technical and operational challenge. The liberation characteristics and also the chemical environment is critical to performing a successful separation. Reviewing the mineralogy to understand the characteristics of the ore and the plant flotation behavior is fundamental to designing a successful improvement program.At Savannah Nickel the challenges presented by a falling nickel price required a rethink of the flowsheet to improve the project economics through improving the concentrate grade and recoveries. Glencore Technology reviewed the plant performance and proposed and tested solutions to improve the grade performance of the concentrator with the support of the plant team. A pilot plant comprising a M20 IsamillTM followed by an L500/1 Jameson Cell was operated on various plant streams. In addition to the pilot plant, flotation surveys and a plant based laboratory program was used to supplement the plant understanding and within two weeks significant improvements were identified and demonstrated. The combination of the pilot operation and the plant based laboratory program was able to quickly demonstrate the improvements and test with equipment that is fully scaleable from pilot plant to full scale.IntroductionPanoramic Resources Limited is a Western Australian mining company formed in 2001 for the purpose of developing the Savannah Nickel Project in the East Kimberley region of Western Australia. Panoramic successfully commissioned the $65 million Savannah Project in late 2004. The process plant at Savannah comprises a single stage crusher, SAG mill, flotation, thickening and filtering stages to produce a bulk nickel, copper, cobalt concentrate. Metallurgical recoveries average 86-89% for nickel, 94-97% for copper and 89-92% for cobalt. The plant was originally designed for a throughput of 750,000 tonnes per annum, but has consistently outperformed the design specifications.Due to low nickel prices the Savannah Nickel mine and processing plant were placed into care and maintenance in May 2016. Prior to suspending production Glencore Technology was engaged to investigate options to improve the concentrate grade. With the discovery of Savannah North in 2014 and the Savannah North Scoping Study demonstrating LoM ~8 years and Mining Inventory of 6.07Mt @ 1.26% Ni, 0.64% Cu and 0.09% Co significant future potential exists. By completing pilot plant studies prior to shutting down, the plant engineering studies can be completed and the plant readied for restart by the time the nickel price improves."

The importance of structural geology in open pit slope stability is overlooked in many mining operations due to pressures to cut costs and minimize mine personnel. As a result, mine geology staff are often unable to keep up with geological mapping of the pit slopes due to other day to day production oriented tasks. In some instances, key structural controls that contribute to slope instability may not be identified until after a slope instability has initiated, at which time it may be difficult or impossible to delineate these features in the field. Even for small slopes, understanding the engineering and structural geology of the rock mass, as well as the effects of groundwater and blasting practices, are of key importance to slope stability. Two case histories are presented as examples of mining operations that experienced slope instability with little more than anecdotal information about the structural and groundwater conditions encountered during mining. By conducting field reconnaissance, simple slope stability analyses and ongoing slope monitoring, practical remedial measures were implemented, allowing continued safe mining operation.

It is hypothesized that the standard approach adopted to characterize the ground and to determine the rock strength properties at depth are flawed and generally tend to underestimate the rock strength and possibly the stiffness, particularly when the rock mass is characterized as massive to moderately jointed or blocky to very blocky. It is therefore necessary to conclusively established that the hypothesis, that the rock strength in highly confined rocks is greater than generally anticipated, is actually valid and generally applicable, and then to develop new procedures to establish rock parameters that can be reliably used for the design of deep excavation.

"The SIDMIN program aims at filling the mineral processor’s need to know the deportment of ‘minerals of interest’ not just ‘elements of interest’ that pass through the processing plants. Generally, chemistry is used as a tool of routine monitoring on site. Mineralogy, which is relatively much slower, is used more as a tool of research and post mortem investigations and these services are usually provided by a distant facility. The SIDMIN program enables site management to receive chemical and quantitative mineralogical reports on their critical samples daily, simultaneously and affordably.The author developed the SIDMIN program at ZCCM Nchanga Division where it continues to be a powerful tool for monitoring the efficiency of operations. Outlines are given of procedures for quick sample preparation and quantification of significant minerals in process samples. A specimen report is presented, which shows the format of reporting the contributions of individual minerals to metal losses at critical stages of the circuit. It is shown that SIDMIN provides timely information to management, about trends and abrupt changes in the quality of ore, and its processing, in a way never achievable by chemical analyses alone. This greatly helps in resolving the age-old problem of ‘bad ore’ or ‘bad operations’ on a day-by-day basis. For example increase in copper mica in the feed indicates excessive ore dilution during mining. Increased loss of free sulphides was traced to insufficient reagent conditioning time at the Concentrator. Persistent losses of leachable oxides at the Tailings Leach Plant were traced to inadequate leach residence time.SIDMIN is affordable because it can be implemented using basic optical microscopes, minimal quantities of micro-chemical reagents and custom trained site staff who demonstrate good colour perception and an ability to follow laid down procedures consistently."

"The Mount Douglas Granite constitutes the eastern part of the Saint George Batholith and contains the youngest, most differentiated phases of the batholith. It also contains extensive endogranitic, low-grade. Sn- W-Mo-bearing sheeted vein systems. Early phases of the Mount Douglas Granite are coarse- to medium-grained, seriate granites that represent the slowly cooled carapace of the intrusion. Late phases are medium- to fine-grained, equigranular and porphyritic granites that were accompanied by repeated and widespread fracturing of the carapace and injection of mineralizing fluids. These granites represent a highly differentiated suite with ""A "" type affinities developed in a ""within plate"" transitional to ""syn-collision"" tectonic setting. 4oAr/ 39Ar dates for biotites from the various phases indicate emplacement circa 367 Ma.The linear distribution of some phases in the Mount Douglas Granite and the systematic orientations of sheeted veins along tensional fractures indicate structural control on granite emplacement and vein distribution. This type of relatively passive endogranitic mineralization is unique in the granites of southern New Brunswick and contrasts markedly with highly fluidized systems operative elsewhere in the area. IntroductionInvestigation of Sn-W-Mo occurrences in New Brunswick has shown that most of this mineralization is associated with late, highly differentiated phases of post-orogenic (Acadian) granitoid magmatism that occurred during Devonian and Early Carboniferous time (Ruitenberg and Fyffe, 1982; Taylor et al., 1988). The polymetallic Mount Pleasant Sn-W-Mo deposit (Ruitenberg, 1967, 1972; Kooiman et al., 1986)and the Burnt Hill W deposit are two orebodies of this type in New Brunswick. Numerous smaller deposits associated with these granitoid rocks in southwestern New Brunswick have been documented in previous investigations (Ruitenberg, 1967, 1968; Ruitenberg and Fyffe, 1982; Taylor et al., 1985; Lentz, 1985)."

The Xietongmen deposit is located 350 km west of Lhasa, Tibet. It is a new, high-grade porphyry copper-gold discovery and the first deposit to be systematically explored by a western company in southern Tibet. In 2005, Continental Minerals Corporation drilled 21,332 m of core in 63 holes and demonstrated excellent lateral and vertical continuity of high-grade copper-gold mineralization over an area 750 m by up to 350 m in size which remains open in all lateral directions. Drill intersections repeatedly yield grades >1% Cu equivalent (based on gold and copper prices) and include 308.5 m at 0.87% Cu and 1.25 g/T Au (1.60 CuEQ%), and 315.6 metres at 0.61% Cu and 1.11 g/T Au (1.26 CuEQ%). Extensive drilling in 2006 will expand and delineate the deposit, and metallurgical, engineering, environmental and socio-economic evaluations will begin. Xietongmen is hosted by volcanic and intrusive rocks of the Gangdese belt, a magmatic arc active between 120 and 30 Ma along the southern margin of Eurasia. Pervasive alteration is dominated by a well-mineralized K-feldspar and biotite assemblage, and by a more peripheral sericitic assemblage also with strong chalcopyrite. Major vein stages include chalcopyrite-bearing quartz, biotite, magnetite and pyrite-pyrrhotite types.

The paper reviews the back-ground leading to the invention, discusses the process chemistry and historically tracks the commercial development. Engineering and cost considerations are presented.IntroductionThe year 1994 was particularly significant in terms of the technical and business development of the INCO SO2/AIR cyanide destruction process. The year marked a decade of service to the world mining community since INCO acquired the Canadian patent in 1984. In that time period, the technology had become widely recognized as the state-of-the-art process in the field of cyanide detoxification and today we enjoy the distinction of having licensed the process at over 50 project sites worldwide. The application for the process has mostly been in the mining industry in precious metal recovery plants where it offers treatment for a wide range of waste streams such as: CIP/CIL slurries, Merrill-Crowe barren bleed solutions and/or re-pulped filter cakes, tailings pond water recycle or discharge, make-up water to flotation circuits and feed to underground backfill plants. The process also applies to the treatment of high cyanide rinsewaters from metal plating shops. More recently the process is being applied to the rinsing and abandonment of heap leach pads where it has proven to be a very cost-effective application of the INCO process. The distinct advantages that have led to the success of the process are the ability to work on slurries as well as solutions and the significantly low cost of sulphur dioxide products. The process is safe and easy to manage and uses all forms of SO2(liquid, gas or salts) which gives the process tremendous versatility with respect to geographic application.
