"The H.B. Mine, a zinc-lead operation of the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada Limited (Cominco), is in south central British Columbia, on Sheep Creek, a west-flowing branch of the Salmon River. It is 3 miles by road from B.C. highway No. 6, 30 miles south of Nelson, B.C., with an excellent highway connection to the smelter city of Trail, 35 miles from the mine. The nearest permanent settlement is the village of Salmo, 7 miles distant by road. The mine is situated along a belt containing other important zinc-lead deposits, including those of the Canadian Exploration Company, 3 miles to the south, and the Reeves MacDonald mine, 9 miles distant again to the southwest.Deeply oxidized outcrops were located in 1907 on the north side of Sheep Creek valley by two prospectors named Horton and Benson. The property was given the name H.B., after the two discoverers, and there commenced a long and intermittent series of mining operations designed mainly to develop and extract oxidized lead-zinc ore. In 1925 a determined attempt was made by a British syndicate to develop a large tonnage of sulphide ore, but this ended in failure after some 3,000 feet of lateral development had been done. In 1927 Cominco acquired the mine, but it lay idle until 1946 when a geological study was followed by a program of surface drilling which encountered extensive sulphide mineralization. An underground development program revealed more details of the deposit, and sufficient ore was found to warrant construction of a 1,000-ton mill. Mine preparation and mill construction were completed by early 1953, but production was deferred due to low metal prices. The mine was finally brought into production early in 1955."

Within the Dominion of Canada occurrences of petro-liferous shales have been known for many years. Nevertheless, with the exception of a comparatively brief period, Canada has had to depend largely on foreign sources for its supplies of crude petroleum and petroleum products. Attempts were made to retort local shales in 1859, near Collingwood, Ontario, and again in 1862, near Baltimore, New Brunswick. In each instance these attempts were abandoned owing to the rapidly increasing production of well petroleum from the newly discovered pools of western Ontario and Pennsylvania. Now, after a lapse of nearly sixty years, attention is again directed to the commercial value of Canadian shales as a possible source of crude petroleum. Province of Nova Scotia: The principal deposits of oil-shales occur in Pictou and Antigonish counties and have been known for more than 60 years. During the three years following its discovery, several thousand tons of a particularly rich sub-variety, known as stellarite (stellar coal or oil coal) was mined near Stellarton in Pictou county. It is stated that stellarite yielded upwards of 10,000 cubic feet of 36 candle gas, and that selected samples gave a yield equivalent to 170 Imperial gallons (204 U.S. gallons) of crude petroleum per ton. The average petroleum content of a cargo shipped to Boston was 48 Imperial gallons (57.6 U. S. gallons) and the associated shale or 'bat', gave a yield of 39 Imperial gallons (46.8 U.S. gallons). Part of the above output was shipped to retorting works in Boston and in Portland, and part was mixed with bituminous coals for the enrichment of illuminating gas. Following the discovery of well petroleum in Ontario and in the United States, the mining of stellarite ceased.

With world metal prices still in a depressed state following the prolonged 1981-82 recession, moreover, the continuing success of Canadian mining in world markets will depend on this country's ability to compete in a new environment characterized by subsidized Third World production . For the most part, this new competitive environment will encourage the development of cost-efficient mines that are better equipped to withstand the troughs and valleys of international metals prices."

"The Loss Prevention Program and management style applied at Kidd Creek enabled them to maintain a 1.02/200 000 man-hours accident frequency over a 20-year period. Falconbridge Limited, Kidd Creek Division operates a major zinc, copper, silver mine, two gold mines and a metallurgical facility in Timmins, Ontario. The metallurgical site and the base metal mine are 17 miles apart and joined by their own railroad. The minesite consists of two shafts, one 3000 feet deep and the other to 5200 feet deep, as well as the necessary maintenance and service shops. The metallurgical site consists of a 14 000 STPD concentrator, a zinc refining plant, copper smelter, copper refinery, and the necessary maintenance shops. The two gold mining operations are adjacent to the metallurgical site.At the time of writing this paper the workforce consisted of some 2500 people divided between the two sites. Nine hundred and ninety-two employees are stationed at the minesite, with the remainder at the metallurgical site and gold mines. The workforce in the Timmins operation is non-unionized and reflects the belief that employee interests are well served.Beside providing competitive wages and an excellent benefit package, Kidd Creek takes special pride in its employee relations practices and continued efforts in communication.In each of the programs referred to, there have been equal involvement by both management and the employees. Each crew, under the direction of a supervisor, makes up its own health and safety committee. To maintain a successful Loss Prevention Program, it is essential that management and the employees work closely together and provide meaningful input and effort to succeed.At this point, refer to the lost time injury frequency as a measure of failure and refer to the opposite end of the scale as the measure of success. The ultimate goal of every operating company is to have a zero frequency, therefore denoting 100070 success. The company uses most of the tangible safety aids found in other mining operations, such as safety posters, safety reminders, check lists, and the use of the Neil George Safety System. The difference is the manner and style of management at the Kidd Creek Division. Their ""open door"" policy and the close association, between management and the employees, has always served them well. Abstract - The Vazante Mine is located in the Vazante District, the largest zinc district in Brazil. The Vazante deposit consists dominantly of an unusual willemitic ore. Small sulfide bodies are tectonically imbricated with the willemitic ore, within the Vazante shear zone. Structural styles of deformation and petrographic and isotopic evidence indicate that willemitic mineralization and deformation occurred synchronously during the Neo-Proterozoic. Various generations of hydrothermal veins and hydraulic breccias may pre-date, accompany and overprint the mineralization. Ore-formation temperatures are deduced from stable isotope geothermometry and mineral chemistry of both sulfide bodies and willemitic ore. Temperatures during the main stage of mineralization range from 206°C to 294°C (willemitic ore) and 317°C (sulfides), and reflect the prevailing metamorphic conditions within the shear zone. The fluid from which the gangue minerals of the sulfide bodies precipitated (at 250°C) had an oxygen isotopic average value of ?18O = +19.4‰. This value appears to reflect the interaction of metamorphic fluid with the carbonate rocks of the Vazante formation. At 250°C, the fluid in equilibrium with the vein mineral phases and willemitic ore assemblage exhibits a uniform oxygen isotopic composition, with an average value of ?18O = +11.5‰. The positive linear covariance of ?18O and ?13C ratios of the carbonates is most likely due to the mixing of metamorphic and meteoric fluids. The ?34S values of sulfides indicate a direct crustal origin for the sulfur. It is suggested that the sulfur is largely derived from pre-existing sulfide bodies and has been transported by metamorphic fluids. The willemitic ore may have originated from the precipitation of metal in sulfur- poor fluids under oxidized conditions, within the Vazante shear zone.

Industrial plants located in the province of Quebec, Canada, are subjected to large variations of the ambient air temperature, Building ventilation systems of these plants must have some flexibility in order to meet industrial hygiene standards (TLV for chemical substances, heat stress and cold stress) at any time of the year, The building ventilation of a bath treatment plant of an aluminium smelter in Quebec was examined under summer and winter conditions, Part of the plant has periodic emissions of hydrogen fluoride gas and heat from hot anode butts, CFD modeling was used to optimise the building ventilation of the bath treatment plant, The present study proposes a modified building ventilation system, which improves the internal environment, complies with industrial hygiene standards and also reduces heating costs by 20 % during winter.

THE National Advisory Committee on Research in the Geological Sciences was established seven years ago - in 1949. In 1952, shortly after the Committee had really begun to function and had issued its first report, a paper ( l) was presented describing the objectives and organization of the Committee and the progress to that time. Another four years have gone by and the Committee feels a further progress report may be of interest. HISTORY Ten years ago, in 1946, the Geology Division of the Institute set up a Committee on Geological Research. This Committee, under the Chairmanship of Dr. J. E. Hawley, recommended that "a National Advisory Committ.ee on Research in the Geological Sciences be formed" (2). With the backing of the President and Council of the C.I.M. this recommendation went forward to the then Minister .of Mines and Resources and, with his approval, to the Committee on Scientific and Industrial Research of the Privy ?Council. As a result, the National Advisory Committee was set up in 1949.

IN 1953, Lewis (1) published an article which brought forth a great amount of discussion by grinding engineers. In his contribution to discussion the present writer (2) suggested that, for the most efficient performance of a ball mill, there must be a .definite relationship between Cn, per cent critical speed, and V p, per cent mill volume occupied by the ball charge. Later, he ( 3) was able to publish some grinding data from Wright-Hargreaves milly which appeared to bear out this contention. It is with this view to establishing a fundamental relationship between Cn and Vp that the idea of this Forum was conceived. Accordingly, a questionnaire was prepared and copies of it were mailed to over eighty Canadian mill operators. This questionnaire did not include a question on dilution on the assumption that each mill operator was using the most efficient dilution for his operation, nor was a question on efficiency of classification included since it was thought that the inclusion of efficiency of dassification in the questionnaire at this preliminary stage might render the forum discussion,. while everybody was trying to find his bearings, too unwieldy. However, it is evident that, as discussions develop, this forum will have to define a uniform method for establishing most efficient classification in grinding circuits

In 2005, we automated a forklift-based Hot Metal Carrier to be capable of typical metal transfer operations around a smelter. The project was highly successful and the vehicle has demonstrated hundreds of hours of live autonomous operations to thousands of people from industry and the public. As a result of the exposure and success of the project, we have expanded its focus to demonstrate how various technology components can be utilised to gain benefits in other areas of industrial operations. These include asset tracking, vehicle usage analysis, pedestrian detection and infrastructure profiling. Each of these components was derived from the core autonomous vehicle technology suite and has shown a high potential for improving safety and efficiency of vehicle-related operations, and improved diagnostic processes for measuring deformations of bakes and furnaces. The autonomous vehicle project and its extended technologies are described in this paper.

The Raglan Mill had been in production for less than a year when the initial toxicity tests on the effluent revealed that it was defined as ?toxic? under regulations. Testwork was begun to address the fundamental reasons for the toxicity and a systematic approach was initiated to identify causes. Elimination of the problem presented a challenge once the main conclusion identified high dissolved solids as the principal culprit. In particular, normally benign soda ash (sodium bicarbonate) reagent additions used in milling, was identified as the main contributor to the problem. Following analysis of all requirements and safety considerations, a concept to recycle 100% of the mill process water was pursued. In addition to meeting regulatory requirements, this project would have numerous positive benefits to the operation, including reducing fresh water consumption and lowering costs.

"Force analysis on weakly-magnetic particles and non-magnetic particles in magnetic field are presented, using a kind of permanent magnetic drum magnetic separator, which is designed with strong specific magnetic force and open magnetic system. Its surface peak intensity reaches to 1.0T, and the distribution density of capture line is 1.25×103/dm2. Qualitative analysis on the particles including its magnetic property, particle size, motion speed, magnetic field intensity, etc. is also presented to calculate the separating parameters for the drum separator. Experiment was conducted for the separation of fine weakly magnetic minerals for example ilmenite. The practicability to separate the minerals using separator designed with open magnetic system has been proved, providing an economic way for efficient separation of micro-fine weakly magnetic minerals and upgrading of non-metallic minerals. INTRODUCTIONMagnetic separation is a mineral processing method based on the differences of magnetic properties between minerals in inhomogeneous magnetic field (Sun, 2007). Currently for separation of micro-disseminated weakly magnetic iron ore, electromagnetic high intensity magnetic separators with closed structure of magnet system are often used. And for the separation of strongly magnetic minerals such as magnetite, low intensity drum magnetic separators with open magnet system are often used. In order to lower the operation costs and improve energy efficiency, it is important to develop efficient high intensity permanent magnetic separator with open magnet system, to some extent replacing high intensity electromagnetic separator.Oberteuffer (1974) discussed the magnetic force and competing forces in magnetic separators which compete with the magnetic forces and act on all of the particles which travel through the separator are those of gravity, hydrodynamic drag, fraction, and inertia in magnetic separation."

PART I.-GASES IN INDUSTRY INTRODUCTION THE part played by gases in industry can be considered from at least four distinct viewpoints, viz: (1) As air to support combustion and life and do various kinds of work (2) As fuel, or as essential to certain chemical processes (3) As sources of danger from explosion or fire ( 4) As hazards to man's health The present paper deals with gases only insofar as they are sources of danger, or are hazards to health. It may be noted, however, that, in point of tonnage, air is one of the most important materials handled in any industrial plant. In the operations of the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company, for example, 138,000 tons of air are handled daily, the only material exceeding this figure being water. The United States Bureau of Mines has listed no fewer than seventy-four gases and vapours that, under certain conditions, may be considered as ex-plosive or dangerous (poisonous). "Design of engineering controls to limit occupational noise exposure rely on accurate calculation inputs. Sound in mines can carry considerable distances. Mine ventilation engineers rely on noise propagation calculations to estimate silencer performance criteria for key mine fan installations that are often in proximity to occupied areas of a mine and can remain in service for decades. The blasted and rockbolted walls of hard rock mining tunnels have unique acoustical properties. Underground testing in an operating metal mine in Sudbury, Canada was performed and results processed to characterize noise propagation in mines, with the goal of improving the accuracy of noise calculations.INTRODUCTIONAs mine operators continue to improve and promote workplace safety, addressing noise at fixed infrastructure locations is observed as increasingly common. Underground fans are important to consider in this context, as they are typically loud, in proximity to occupied and sensitive workplaces, and operate nearly continuously. Predicting noise propagation from ventilation fans within underground mines has long been a challenge, with few available resources documenting acoustical properties as calculation inputs. Other factors in addition to rock face absorption properties include tunnel geometry and distance from the fan, which play critical roles in characterizing the noise level at any given point away from the fan. By understanding and establishing methods to better predict noise dissipation along underground mining tunnels, engineers can design noise controls with a greater degree of precision and confidence to effectively protect workers from over exposure to noise.This paper investigates classical methods of predicting reverberant room and direct field noise propagation. These prediction methods are then compared to noise measurements taken within the Fraser Mine of Glencore’s Sudbury Integrated Nickel Operations (Sudbury INO) Measurements were taken at a depth of ~881 m (2,889 ft), along an ~300 m (984 ft) long blasted hard rock mining tunnel. The noise along the mine tunnel resulted from the intakes of two 900 kW (1,200 hp) ventilation fans with a combined exhaust capacity of 300 m3/s (630,000 cfm)."

In the Polish coal mining industry, the use of mine waste in underground backfill has been the most common means of providing ground support to minimize surface subsidence, increasing extraction ratios, and reducing the quantity of waste for surface disposal. Over the last decade attention has been focused on the use of different waste as filling material of underground workings and grouting of roof fall rocks in caving area. In the paper, a brief history of the development of fill technology in Polish coal mining industry is presented. Next, the paper discusses various criteria that should be taken under consideration in the preparation process of a fill slurry and grout, fill distribution systems, mining geometry and placement methods. Moreover, in the paper evaluation of the potential of utilizing coarse and fine waste as a resource material in the production of a backfill slurry and grout for filling and injection in abandoned mines is presented.

"The Magino gold mine is located 45 km northeast of Wawa, Ontario. There was limited gold production in the late thirties. The present operation was officially opened in October 1988 and produced gold until September 1992. It was a 635 tonnes per day, decline-accessed mine, with ore coming from several small blast hole and shrinkage stopes.The host for the gold is the Webb Lake granodiorite stock which was intruded into the Goudreau Lake Deformation Zone. This east-northeast-striking deformation zone overprints the generally east-west- striking isoclinally folded metavolcanic and metasedimentary rocks, which make up the east end of the Michipicoten greenstone belt. The ore-shoots are controlled by dextral delatancy associated with the Goudreau Lake Deformation Zone. Shearing, bleaching and silicification accompanied the gold emplacement. IntroductionThe following is a general information paper on the Magino gold mine which is located 45 km- northeast of Wawa toward the east end of the Michipicoten greenstone belt. This paper summarizes the discovery, exploration and development history of the deposit. The geological characteristics are described, including regional geological setting, local mine geology, mineralization, alteration and structural history. The mining methods and the contribution of the geological staff to the successful development and mining of the gold deposit are also mentioned."

"A description is given of a series of tests performed to determine the comparative effects which dynamic and static straining, in compression, have on the physical strength properties of mild steel and an aluminum alloy. The dynamic deformation was imposed during the passage of single stress pulses of about 100 micro-second duration. These pulses were recorded with strain gauges mounted near both ends of the specimen. The resulting records were analysed using a simple wave theory; there from the dynamic stress-strain curves for the respective metals were deter-mined and were then compared with the static stress-strain relation. The respective hardnesses of the metals after deformation are evaluates by means of static stress-strain curves in compression. The micro-structures of the metals before and after deformation are also shown. It is observed that dynamic de-formation considerably modifies the rate of strain hardening. This modified hardening appears to be persistent. The observed differences in physical strength properties and micro-structures are discussed in the light of the accepted dislocation theory for metals."

Gold mining in the Yellowknife area of the Northwest Territories started long before the concept of sustainability entered the academic literature and by the time the term enjoyed widespread public acceptance, the Yellowknife gold mining industry was in its sunset years. Nevertheless, the city of Yellowknife will long outlive the gold mines that it was founded on, demonstrating that not only can mining build sustainable communities, but that sustainable mining as a concept is an entirely valid precept. To this effect, the authors examine the complex economic and social aspects of the gold mining industry in the Yellowknife area over the last 70 years.
