THE KIDD CREEK MINE is located within the Abitibi greenstone belt, near its west end, in an area known as the Porcupine mining camp (Fig. 5). The Abitibi belt, long known for its many major gold and base metal deposits, is the largest Archean (early Precambrian) greenstone belt within the Canadian Shield. In the Porcupine area, the greenstone belt is composed principally of Keewatin (older Archean) basic to intermediate volcanics, with subordinate felsic volcanics developed• locally. Greywacke, mainly of volcanic derivation, occurs associated with and overlying these volcanics. Timiskaming (younger Archean) sediments, principally coarse clastics, unconformably overlie the Keewatin volcanics and sediments. The reader is referred to Goodwin and Ridler (1970) •r. for a more comprehensive description of the Abitibi belt.

ONE of the morning sessions at the recent Annual Meeting was devoted to a Symposium on ways and means to expedite geological investigation, and also to promote greater prospecting activity, in Canada. It will be recalled that at the 1940 Annual Meeting, held in Winnipeg, a paper(l) prepared by Dr. G. A. Young, Chief Geologist of the Geological Survey, was presented, and was followed by a Symposium on Geological Investigations in Canada(2). On that occasion, the participants were in the main geologists, and they included the directors or other officials of each of the Provincial departments or bureaus of mines. At the Montreal meeting, the subject was discussed mainly from the point of view of the mining industry. The following pages present, in somewhat summarized form, the several contributions to that discussion.-ED. DR. J. J. O'NEILL(3), who was to have opened the Symposium, was unfortunately prevented through illness from attending the meeting. He had intended outlining the main features of his paper on The Exploitation and Conservation of Mineral Resources in a Balanced Development of Canada, presented at the last annual meeting of the Royal Society of Canada( 4). In his absence, DR.J. A. DRESSER presented a summary of the paper.

Potential problems associated with groundwater inflows are a major concern to many Saskatchewan mining operations. Rock mass behaviour and stability have been linked to groundwater inflow potential. An estimate of the hydraulic conductivity of the rock mass is an important factor for assessing groundwater inflow potential. This paper presents a procedure that was developed to conduct air permeability tests, for estimating the hydraulic conductivity of the rock mass. Tests were conducted near underground excavations with the goal of assessing links between measured air permeability, rock mass classification and the rock mass response to adjacent excavations. Measured changes in air permeability corresponding to the distance from excavation boundaries may indicate changes to joint properties such as joint aperture, continuity and frequency. This study outlines the instrumentation, the experimental and analytical procedures, and the preliminary results from testing.

Advanced process modelling tools were developed for the Xstrata Nickel Sudbury Smelter flow sheet using a combination of FACTSAGE TM METSIMTM and ARENATM software. These tools were employed to assist with plant optimisation, emission control, process design, troubleshooting and case studies as applied to the smelter. The development of process modelling tools in pyro-metallurgy commonly involves an in-depth study of the therm o-chemical properties (heat capacity, liquidus temperature, etc.) of all high temperature phases, usually matte and slag. The preferred tool for this purpose is FACTSAGETM, a well-known then-no-chemical modelling software package. The results from the therm o-chemical model have been subsequently incorporated into the development of a process model for the entire smelting facility using the METSIMTM platform. Such process model also includes a number of special features adopted to effectively simulate the complex industrial phases; matte and slag systems. To ensure the robustness and reliability of the process model, several process parameters and assumptions were verified with laboratory and plant data. Consequently, the model includes the ability to examine the impact of a number of plant parameters on potential plant performance. Primary variables are the percent sulphur elimination during concentrate roasting, furnace matte grade and degree of matte metallization. Key output parameters include operating temperature, furnace coke requirement, sulphuric acid production, CO2 emissions and overall energy requirements. Selected outputs from the process model (for example blowing time, slag production rate and matte converting rate) can then be utilised in the development of a discrete event model (DEM) for the smelter using ARENATM software. Incorporation of reliable and validated mass balance parameters enhances the robustness and reliability of the DEM model. The integration of then-no-chemical, process and DEM modeling tools has a distinct advantage in planning plant trials and examining process design initiatives at Xstrata Nickel's Sudbury Smelter. The present paper discusses the development of these three models and the synergies existing among them. Typical results from all three models are also presented.

"There has been a continuous evolution with the use of pre-cast concrete elements in the construction of aluminum smelters. In 1990, Phase I of Alouette was built using cast-in-place concrete exclusively. Whereas, other AP 30 technology plants such as Hillside 2 in the mid-1990s used pre-cast concrete beams with cast-in-place floors. Mozal 2, in 2002, used pre-cast concrete beams with pre-cast partial-slab operating floors. Alouette Phase II went further. Not only were the potroom building beams and floors pre-cast, but the entire pot support system, insulating walls and basement jersey walls were pre-cast. Once the techniques for bending and welding the reinforcement bars and the design for attaching electrical insulating plates to the concrete was perfected, the challenge for the project remained only in the logistics of transporting the pieces to site and simple erection. The overall impact on the project was dramatic. Using prefabricated concrete not only allowed advancement of the schedule, but totally eliminated formwork, re-bar installation, and form removal activities along with the handling of all the materials involved with these activities. With the elimination of these labour and material-intensive portions of the job, exposure to work injuries was dramatically reduced. The most prevalent activity for lost time accidents is during the rough work associated with concrete formwork, placing concrete and form removal. Another area where prefabricated elements were successfully used on Alouette Phase II was for the insulating walls enclosing the pot area, known as the ""claustra walls"". Usually these walls are constructed in-situ using mortar and breeze block. Success was also achieved with prefabrication of the perimetric walls that are installed at the lower floor of the potroom. A big advantage of using prefabricated concrete in the electrolysis area is in assuring electrical isolation for the operating floors. "The original segmented intercell Optibar succeeded in reducing the magnitude and occurrence of short circuits. It also improved the specific energy consumption of the process. This paper expands the load current source concept introducing a triple segmented bar. This new bar adds immunity to dirt contacts and open circuits. Moreover, it further improves the standard deviation of current densities. As compared with industrial practices this development should accomplish an 8% specific energy reduction. Also, a plant implemented with BBS should be able to work with 12.5% higher process currents than Walker without compromising the operation.INTRODUCTIONIn 2011 the technology based on current mode was implemented at industrial scale. The success of this technology moved CIM Magazine (Lanktree, 2011) to write in the Jan 2012 issue an upfront story of this technological innovation. To cover the story, the technical reporter Graham Langtree was appointed by Peter Braul Editor of the upfront section. The article tells that “More than 40,000 tonnes of copper have been refined in a year-long test run of Optibar Inc.’s new technology at Barrick Gold’s Zaldívar copper plant in northern Chile. The new segmented intercell bars being used in the Compañía Minera Zaldívar refinery have slashed energy costs, reduced short circuits during refining and allowed the production of heftier, purer sheets of copper – gains that all promise to boost the plant’s margins. A copper refining tank house containing the cell circuits typically consumes 2,000 kWh of electricity to produce a single tonne of grade-A copper. Yet, monitoring the energy efficiency of the Optibar technology after increasing the weight of harvested copper sheets, the project’s engineers recorded a 92 kWh-per-tonne cut in energy consumption, a savings of 4.6 per cent. “Today, with the power prices we have, Optibar technology represents a potential savings for the whole plant of US$1.5 million per year,” says Robert Mayne- Nicholls, executive general manager of Barrick Gold’s Chilean operations.”"

On September 3rd, 1947, the Acadia Coal Company put into operation a central coal preparation plant. This plant was designed to process all coals mined by this Company in the Pictou County coal field. The problem, briefly, was to make a three-way separation of the raw coal fed into the plant. It was desired to remove all stone, metal, and wood from the marketable coal and to produce a splint coal from the raw material which would be suitable for making power. This splint coal product is belted directly to the power plant which is adjacent to the wash plant. To attain this object it was therefore necessary, first, to wash the raw coal, removing all splint, stone, metal, and wood. The stone, metal, wood, and highest-ash splint had then to be removed by a second washing in order to obtain the lower-ash splint for use in the power plant. The plant is on the east side of the Allan colliery, in the town of Stellarton (see accompanying photograph). It is of steel frame construction with wood siding, covered on the exterior with corrugated galvanized iron. Considerable concrete had to be poured for the foundation piers as the plant site is largely 'fill' ground. This necessitated the construction of extremely heavy footings containing a large amount of reinforcing steel. In all, 884 cu. yds. of concrete were poured for the various pits, tanks, and foundations; its average test was about 3,500 lb. per square inch. At the time the plant was constructed, the steel shortage in Canada and the United States was acute and, in order to obtain steel for the structure which is four stories high- an unused part of the Allan bankhead was torn down. Enough steel was obtained from this demolition to fabricate the new plant.

"Since the inception of spherical agglomeration, few investigations to exploit commercially the technique in the metallurgical field have been conducted. Of these, none appear to have been carried sufficiently far to demonstrate commercial feasibility.This paper describes a continuous agglomeration-separation process that can rapidly handle large tonnages of ore material. A small pilot plant de-signed from information obtained with the semi-batch unit described herein is currently in operation.In the absence of a reagent recovery system or cheap reagents, the process is probably not economically attractive for many common ores. However, for iron ores, the fuel content of the agglomerates can be used in a subsequent step such as direct reduction."

"The discovery of low-grade copper-silver mineralization near the town of Tipperary, Ireland, by Gortdrum Mines Limited was the result of reconnaissance geological and geochemical exploration followed by target delineation from induced polarization surveys.Initially, orientation studies at the Tynagh lead-zinc orebody showed that such deposits could be readily detected in stream sediments and soils using cold extraction analysis for total heavy metals. Numerous areas showing stratigraphical and structural similarities to Tynagh were then selected for reconnaissance geochemical prospecting.The Gortdrum deposit was detectable through the presence of anomalous metal values in stream sediments 3,000 feet downstream; soil sampling indicated an area of 2,000 by 700 feet containing 2 Yz to 20 times background cold-extractable metal values. Induced polarization surveys defined the dimensions and attitude of mineralization.Drilling to date has outlined (under 10 to 20 feet of till) low-grade copper-silver mineralization within Lower Carboniferous limestones and shales which have been faulted against Devonian sandstone. Mineralization ex-tends from surface to depths of 250 to 450 feet and consists of bornite-chalcocite-tetrahedrite and some chalcopy-rite in altered limestones and intrusive dikes.The deposit is geologically analogons to the Tynagh and Silvermines orebodies, but in contrast exhibits a predom-inant structural control. Provisionally, it is postulated that mid-Carboniferous folding and faulting produced the pre-mineralization high porosity via recrystallization, shearing and brecciation. Subsequently, hydrothermal solutions from the west, with a probable eommon origin to the volcanic dikes, were introduced along the fault planes. Although syngenetic causes cannot be exempted, the field relationships favour an epigenetic origin."

Since the last Iron Control in Hydrometallurgy Symposium in Montreal in 1996, the Kokkola zinc plant has increased its capacity from 175,000 t/y to 280,000 t/y by installing an atmospheric concentrate leaching process, which has also affected iron control in the leaching circuit. Major changes have been made at the jarosite residue pond; a subterranean plastic wall reinforced with bentonite and cement has been built around the pond. A new water collecting system that is used for groundwater level control in the pond area was installed. With these two investments in the pond area, it is now possible to prevent any seepage flow from the pond into the surrounding environment. Water pumped from the residue pond is treated in the water treatment plant. This paper describes the behavior of iron in Kokkola's current leaching processes. The treatment of the jarosite, the improvements to the residue pond and the water treatment process are also described.

MINE operators are concerned with temperature conditions in their mines, particularly the effects of high temperatures on the l1ealth and efficiency of tl1eir employees. This paper is written to focus attention on the variables of heat transfer between rock and air. It illustrates the difficulties of predicting the manner, and the extent, of heat transfer from theoretical concepts, prior to actual operation of a mine airway. There are ~1any sources of heat in mines. The most important is that of the rock surrounding the airway. This heat, in turn, is a product of the age of the rock, faulting, proximity to recent igneous activity, oxidation of sulphides, hot ground waters, etc. The sources of heat may be constant for any one mine, but they are far from constant when dealing with various mining districts or e1•en with a number of mines in the same district. General Summary THIS paper attempts to describe in a preliminary and general manner the nature of certain copper discoveries now being developed by Gaspe Copper Mines, Limited, in Holland township, in the interior of the Gaspe peninsula. Some copper mineralization appears to have been known here at the time of the earliest French explorations, was rediscovered in 1921, and has been under intermittent development by Noranda Mines since 1938. In the last two years discoveries have enhanced the picture so that the deposit now promises to develop into one of the important Canadian copper producers. As ideas are constantly changing with continuing development, any picture given now is very partial and tentative and must be subject to future revision. The nature of these copper occurrences differs from others known in eastern America. In many respects they have unique features but they are most closely akin to some copper deposits found away from the intrusive rocks in the porphyry copper districts of the western United States. The most important orebodies are replacement deposits in a limestone horizon in which the ore gangue is converted to skarn. These lie at considerable distances from any known intrusive but seem to have been derived from a buried stock of granite that intrudes the sedimentary rocks of Lower Devonian age. This intrusive has produced alteration effects in the overlying rocks that may afford a key to locating other ore areas in the Peninsula.

In potash ore flotation, carried out in NaCI-KCI saturated brine (about 6-7 molar KC1 and NaCI solution), long-chain primary amines are used as flotation collectors. Long-chain primary amines are poorly soluble in water and their solubility further decreases at high electrolyte concentration. For ionic surfactants there is a characteristic temperature (Krafft Point, KP) below which their solubility is too low for micellization. In a previous study, the effect of pH on the KP of dodecylammonium chloride in water was determined [Q. Dai and J.S. Laskowski, Langmuir, 7, 1361-1365 (1991)]. This paper deals with the effect of electrolyte concentration on the KP of dodecylammonium chloride. The derived theoretical relationship between the KP and the critical micelle concentration (CMC) for dodecylamine can be used to calculate the KP for electrolyte concentrations of up to 0.5 mol/L (about 8% NaCI-KCI brine). A simple experimental procedure for the determination of the KP for higher electrolyte concentrations is also described. The results show that the Krafft point of dodecylamine increases from about 17-18°C (in distilled water) to about 80°C at 16% brine saturation.

"The legacy of abandoned mines in Canada creates issues that impact on both the health and safety of Canadians and the environment. Solutions to the problems of abandoned minesites require a detailed understanding of site conditions, the engineering solutions which may be relevant, and planning for effective use of the land. In this paper, the authors outline the basic thrusts that have been developed at CANMET to address this problem. These include: multiprovincial agreements to develop a national database; methods of site rendering; a ten-year research program to develop engineering approaches; the review of a large number of case studies; and outlining the associated risks. Examples of the applications of this research are provided in the areas of: municipal, provincial, and federal co-operative projects; site-specific applications; and international linkages."

THE discovery of natural gas with naphtha in 1924 in the Upper Palaeozoic limestone of Turner Valley, 35 miles southwest of Calgary, has led to continuous developments in this field. Drilling undertaken soon after this discovery demonstrated that the anticlinal structure was in reality a major drag-fold cut off on the east side by a westerly inclined fault of large displacement. The faulted edge of the .limestone at depth determines the eastern limits of the field, which between 1924 and 1936 was shown to have a gas area 14 miles long by about 1 mile wide. Since the strata dip westerly, away from the axis of the fold, drilling becomes progressively deeper to the west and, with the advent of deeper drilling, crude oil was discovered in 1936 on the west flank of the structure but in the same porous reservoir rocks as the gas on the crest and upper parts of the fold. Since 1936, drilling has been undertaken wholly for the production of crude-oil and at present two producing areas have been found within the Turner Valley structure. The larger of these, at the south end of the field, in the vicinity of Highwood river, has a length of about 4 3/4 miles and a proved width of one mile, whereas the smaller, in the north end of the field, south of the north fork of Sheep river, has only a few producing wells.

"Cerro de Maimón is located in the Dominican Republic on the island of Hispaniola approximately 75 kilometers northwest of the capital city, Santo Domingo. The processing facility consisted of two separate processing plants for oxide and sulphide ores. The oxide plant processed oxide ore bearing gold and silver ore using cyanide leaching and Merrill Crowe processes, while the sulphide plant produced a copper concentrate using conventional flotation. Cormidom is a commendatory example how mineral processing facilities can co-exist in balance with the environment. In 2014, natural occurring copper oxide contamination with finer grained copper-zinc sulphide mineralisation was expected to dominate the sulphide ore body. In anticipation Cormidom contacted the original plant designer Met-Chem to assist in overcoming this challenge. Test work indicated that increased flotation time and subsequent very fine grinding were required. Met-Chem provided the detailed engineering and Cormidom proceeded with the expansion project internally. Currently Cormidom has processed the sulphide ore successfully by implementing flotation modifications. This paper describes the history of Cormidom, test work on the “new” ore body, modification in process design in the Cu-Zn sulphide flotation circuit, construction and implementation.INTRODUCTIONCorporación Minera Dominicana (CORMIDOM) was a wholly owned subsidiary of GlobeStar Mining Corporation (a Canadian based minerals exploration company) with extensive exploration of base and precious metals in the Dominican Republic. In 2007-2008 CORMIDOM constructed the Cerro de Maimom project. The company was subsequently sold and purchased by Perilya Limited from Australia in 2013. Cerro de Maimón is located in the Dominican Republic on the island of Hispaniola approximately 75 kilometers northwest of the capital city, Santo Domingo. It is near the town of Maimón in Monsenor, Nouel Province (see Figure 1)."

"This paper deals with the stability investigations carried out at the XIVth seam of Jitpur colliery. The study was conducted to investigate the possible causes of roof cavity formation and face spalling at the middle slice face of block-3 longwall panel and to suggest remedial measures. The instrumentation and monitoring work was carried out in the panel over a period of nine months. On the basis of observations, it was found that if the maximum face span was reduced from the existing 4.8 m to 3.6 m, and if the face time schedule cycle was reduced from a maximum of 37 days to about 18 days, this problem could be eliminated. The recommendations of CMRI have been implemented in the middle slice face of block-4 panel with success. IntroductionModerate to steeply dipping, undisturbed seams of uniform thickness are worked by way of inclined slicing parallel to walls. In this method, the seams are treated as a combination of several moderately thick seams dipping parallel to roof and floor. Numerous variations of multislice mining have been used worldwide to get high coal recovery under local conditions of geology, subsidence control, proness to spontaneous combustion, statutes and economics. Multislice mining can proceed either downward descending from the roof or upward ascending from the floor. Ascending methods require backfill behind the working face to provide a base for the next slice. It is also adopted for surface protection against subsidence or mining under a massive roof. This paper presents a scientific study conducted in Jitpur colliery, IISCO where a 9 m thick seam is mined in three slices in ascending order with stowing."

This study was conducted as a part of ongoing work to characterize sulphide concentrate leach residues generated under CESL (Cominco Engineering Services Limited) and Vale pilot and demonstration plant medium temperature (150 °C) process conditions. Three different samples were analyzed. Derivative samples were prepared by extracting gypsum, sulphur and amorphous/poorly crystalline iron oxyhydroxide phases from the leach residues. Thermal behavior of the samples was studied by thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential thermal analysis (DTA) in the temperature range 25 to 800 °C in both air and nitrogen atmospheres, with XRD analyses both before and after heating. Thermal transformation temperatures for different iron oxides/oxyhydroxides present in hydrometallurgical leach residues vary over a wide range which suggests the variable crystallinity of the phases. Raman spectroscopic analysis was carried out to help identify the type of iron phases in the residues. Furthermore, hydroxylamine hydrochloride (HaHC) and oxalate extractions were used to compare the fractionation of the amorphous/poorly crystalline iron phases in the residues. Given the compositions of the residues, any thermal events in the temperature range of 200 °C to 480 °C were attributed to amorphous/poorly crystalline iron phases.

Industrial mineral deposits are widespread in Newfoundland and Labrador and a variety of commodities are produced. The province has the only pyrophyllite mine in Canada and also produces asbestos, gypsum, silica, barite, limestone, gemstones, cement and other structural materials. Large reserves of these and other industrial minerals are known and several deposits are likely future producers. Most producers are wellestablished and have large tonnages of ore reserves.
