A common problem in the mining industry is that company exploration groups operate in relative isolation to the rest of the company; resulting in poor knowledge transfer (Qureshi and Briggs, 2006) and often priority conflicts with mine geology, operations and project departments. In recognition of this problem, Newcrest created a Minerals Division responsible for stewardship and governance of mineral assets across the value chain from reconnaissance to rehabilitation. It was recognised at an early stage that effective collaboration both internally and externally would be required to improve decision making, deliver faster cycle times and improve governance.Collaboration in companies is generally associated with the introduction of new IT functions. However, modern IT-based collaboration systems and practices are relatively simplistic compared to the long-standing practices associated with collaboration and knowledge management in science and engineering disciplines such as geology and mining.The authors of this paper have started a trial of a 12-point plan for effective collaboration, which recognises that significant efficiencies can be gained and barriers to future success removed if more effective collaboration can be achieved between science and engineering divisions in a company along with external professionals and with the collective intelligence (Tapscott and Williams, 2006) of the outside world. To meet growth aspirations some companies, like Newcrest Mining Ltd, are adopting this comprehensive, step change approach by moving from a closed model the isolates mine geologists to an open and collaborative model that uses IT visualisation systems strategically. The paper describes how an open model provides people with the right work environment and the right information at the right time, which will help individuals and workgroups to work more collaboratively day-to-day. The aim is to achieve speed, focus and mitigate risk through an environment where everyone and anyone can contribute effectively (Cisco, 2008).

Pre-concentration has potential to significantly improve Mineral Resource efficiency by removing gangue early in the process, before energy intensive and expensive comminution and fine processing. However, there are numerous options for pre-concentration and the performance and benefits of these are very case specific. To determine the best option for a particular deposit and to successfully integrate it into the overall mining and processing operations requires comprehensive evaluation. This needs to consider orebody suitability, technology capability and economic viability. The in-situ variability of a deposit and how it is influenced by mining methods and the liberation size of gangue are key factors which are generally not well understood. Geostatistical methods provide an insight into orebody variability, and the overall selection of any pre-concentration solution must be an integrated approach between geology, mining and processing. Many pre-concentration evaluations investigate the potential of just one option. Technology selection should start wide and may include: selective mining, pre-screening (with or without selective blasting), sorting (bulk and or particle), coarse gravity separation (e.g. jigging, DMS), coarse particle flotation, magnetic separation, etc. The upgrade performance of these processes is very ore specific and should be determined from testing, with detailed multi-component modelling used to determine the overall process performance. Many of these pre-concentration processes require significant ancillary equipment, feed preparation and materials handling. It is important to realistically estimate all costs to understand overall economics and select the best option. Some examples showing evaluation and comparison of pre-concentration options are presented in this paper. These include assessments of in-situ variability using geostatistical tools, process modelling of pre-concentration options and overall performance, preliminary layouts and cost estimates, and economic evaluations.

This paper presents a case study of characterisation work undertaken at a greenfield exploration project to provide engineering and OH&S inputs for the design of a ventilation system. The paper discusses how comprehensive early characterisation of the ambient surface and underground environment including aspects related to heat, dusts, strata gas, and geologic/mineralogical factors enables incorporation of the right ventilation and non-ventilation controls at a study level to mitigate the risks identified.

After a short presentation of the Division of Mining at the Royal Insti- tute of Technology, Stockholm, Sweden, the author presents some of-the fill research carried out at the Division. Literature surveys and testing methods and equipment are described. The use of flocculants' in hydraulic filling has been tested both in laboratory and in mines and the results are very promi- sing. Finally compressibility investi- gations and some finite element calcu- lations are presented.

As mining activity moves to remote and less developed locations globally, a holistic approach to mine development is fundamental for achieving a balance between strong financial returns and corporate social responsibility and transparency. Key inter-related fundamentals such as social licence to operate, life-of-mine operational planning, minimising environmental impacts and, most importantly, attractive investment returns for the mining company all contribute to the viability of any new mining project.However, the typical practice in the mining industry is often to treat environmental and social/community aspects as separate compliance issues that are dealt with at minimum cost and disruption to the project and resulting operation. This often results in less than optimum environmental and social outcomes, and presents considerable liabilities at the time of closure when rehabilitation programs continue to require funding when all revenue has ceased.The five capitals model seeks to identify each of the key contributors to sustainable development as financial, manufactured/physical, social, human and natural to formulate a type of triple bottom line approach balancing these often competing project factors. The SUSOP® sustainability risks and opportunities framework, developed by the mining industry, bases its approach on the five capitals model and proposes an approach that breaks down enterprise silos to identify innovative solutions for life-of-mine sustainability. This framework has been developed with the nature of mining projects in mind in order to produce approaches and outcomes relevant throughout the life cycle from the planning phases, through project design and construction into operation and closure.This paper argues the need for a more holistic approach to the development and operation of mining projects, and presents case studies where a holistic approach has been applied, in whole or part, and discusses the lessons learned from these case studies.CITATION:Corder, G D, Keith, A and Dyer, L, 2014. Removing the ledge formation in the Hall-Heroult cell during the electrolysis process may significantly reduce the energy requirement of the aluminium production process. In the absence of the ledge, however, the sidewall-material types become heavily restricted since the cryolite is very corrosive at the electrolysis temperatures. This paper study the corrosion behaviour of sintered nickel ferrite, nickel aluminate, and magnesium aluminate refractories (as possible candidates for sidewall material) in molten aluminium and cryolite melts with various alumina content at 980°C. Immersion tests of refractories with various porosity were conducted to assess the suitability of the refractories in the corrosive environment of the electrolysis cells. Microstructural change of the refractory after immersion were analysed using secondary scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Sampling of the melts were taken at 0, 10 min, 30 min, and each hour up to 6 hrs, and subsequently analysed by Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) spectroscopy. Based on the projected concentration of the refractories constituents in the melts, it was predicted that the corrosion rate of NiFe2O4, NiAl2O4 and MgAl2O4 in cryolite with 11 wt per cent Al2O3 were 461 × 103, 1.03 × 103, and 798 × 103 cm/a, respectively. Much lower corrosion rate of 2.3 cm/a for NiFe2O4, 2.6 cm/a for NiAl2O4 and 0.3 cm/a for MgAl2O4 were predicted if the refractories in contact with aluminium melts. Erosion played an important role in the corrosion as the concentration of the refractory constituents in the melts were beyond its solubility limit. It is therefore crucial to increase the densities of the refractory and improve its wetting characteristics.

As Australia’s coal and iron ore export volumes increase to meet international market growth, port terminals, mining operations and rail transport systems can be the source of increased dust emission. Current and future sustainable expansion must minimise dust emission from bulk handling and transport operations located in close proximity to residential areas. Lower level dust emissions can be controlled by operational measures such as water addition to products, and use of water spray on stockpile surfaces. Recent research has shown that higher levels of dust emission can be more effectively controlled by understanding and treating the dust characteristics of each individual bulk product. Application of this research, progressively being applied at Australia’s coal and iron ore port terminals and rail transport systems, is achieving compliance with health standards and minimising dust nuisance effects to an acceptable level.

The Carina iron ore deposit lies 105 km northeast of Southern Cross, WA. The area designated the Yilgarn Iron Ore Project (YIOP) is comprised of five prospects along an east-southeast trending greenstone belt that extends from the Helena-Aurora Ranges in the northwest to the Yendilberrin Hills in the southeast, over a strike length of approximately 40 km. The YIOP project encompasses the previously identified iron deposits of Bungalbin, Bungalbin East and Mt Walton. The Carina deposit was discovered by Polaris Metals NL in May 2007. The Carina deposit is located within and parallel to the structurally complex northwest trending Mount Dimer shear zone. The volcanosedimentary Archaean-aged greenstone sequence consists of ultramafic and mafic lavas and flows with interbedded sediments dominated by chert and banded iron formation (BIF). Supergene enrichment processes formed a goethite orebody replacement of BIF sequences within a doubly plunging synclinal fold structure. Mineralised outcrops dominated by goethite form a low ridge 1500 m long, up to 90 m wide and drilled to over 200 m in depth. In the vicinity of the Carina deposit, iron occurrences have been identified over at least a 12 km strike length and the exploration potential of the area is identified as 30 - 40 Mt. Polaris Metals began exploration in the area in 2006. Target generation in the area used existing state geological survey maps and regional magnetic survey data to focus on BIF occurrences associated with major structures. Early field investigations resulted in the identification of a large outcrop of predominantly goethite mineralisation at Carina. Detailed geological and structural mapping was completed, followed by close-spaced reverse circulation and diamond drilling. The mineralisation is predominantly goethite with specular and coarse platy haematite localised along structures that cut the goethite mineralisation. Mineralised zones are moderately vuggy and larger cavities occur in proximity to fault zones that transect the orebody. A capping by a thin veneer up to 9 m thick of canga or ferricrete occurs in places. By December 2008, 178 reverse circulation and 11 diamond drill holes (seven surface holes, four tails) were completed. The current JORC-compliant resource estimate is based on assays from 72 RC drill holes and using a 55 per cent Fe cut-off stands as an Inferred Resource of 27.9 Mt at 58.6 per cent Fe, 1.3 per cent Al2O3, 3.7 per cent SiO2, 0.09 per cent P, and 10.1 per cent LOI. Assaying has recently been completed and will be incorporated into a new updated resource later in 2009.

"Exploration drill core provides for a number of standard measurements essential for determining the viability of a new mine or the extension of an existing one. Rock lithology and alteration can be visually determined and grade measured from the half core. Geotechnical parameters such as rock strength and structure can also be measured. Using suitable proxies, these metrics can then be used to estimate run-of-mine (ROM) particle size. In combination with comminution test results, these can subsequently be used to design comminution circuit configurations and estimate their performance.The Frieda River Project drill core for the large Horse-Ivaal-Trukai copper-gold porphyry deposit was unusual due to a late stage gypsum-anhydrite stockwork event that overprinted much of the deposit. Above the base of the oxidised zone, which closely matches the water table, gypsum and anhydrite has been leached out, effectively removing the glue holding the rock mass together. As a result, much of the rock above this gypsum-anhydrite surface is fragmented and gravel-like in texture, while the material below this horizon is typically uniform and competent.Large volumes of the orebody above the gypsum-anhydrite surface are expected to need minimal or no blasting for efficient excavation. In addition, the fragmented nature of much of the material was expected to reduce comminution specific energy as it already appears as though it has been crushed. While this was expected to have positive impacts to the operation, the lack of standard geological logging methods available to accurately define the degree of in situ fragmentation led to difficulty in gaining certainty over the ROM product and grinding circuit feed size distributions.Using the extensive library of core photos for the project, a novel method using image analysis techniques to take both the intact core and gravel into account to predict ROM fragmentation was developed. In addition, existing point load test data was used to infer the strength of the rock and its impact on the blasting, crushing and grinding processes. The novel approach allowed development of ROM size distribution data and improved certainty in the results of comminution circuit designs.This paper describes the methodology undertaken in detail, and discusses the results obtained.CITATION:Bennett, D and La Rosa, D, 2016. The Dizon open pit mine of Benguet Corporation in western Central Luzon, Philippines has yielded some 182 000 t copper, and about 26 000 kg gold and 48 000 kg silver as by products since it started operation in November 1979. The 140 million tonne orebody is associated with a small quartz diorite porphyry stock emplaced in volcanic rocks on the basal slope of a stratovolcano complex as stockworks, fracture fillings and disseminated sulphide mineralization averaging 0.43% Cu, 0.93 g/t Au and 2.5 g/t Ag. Intense hydrothermal alteration accompanied the mineralization that developed fairly distinct mineral assemblages within and around the intrusive. Post-ore volcanic activity later gave birth to an upward-flaring diatreme which broke out south of and adjacent to the orebody and partially destroying it. Subsequent volcanic activity buried the mineralized area along with the rest of the stratovolcano's surrounding slopes under a thick deposit of pyroclastic and laharic debris. Erosion eventually removed the volcanic cappings over Dizon and also exposed the quartz diorite porphyry stock which might have resulted in the truncation of a sizeable section of the Dizon deposit. The chain of stratovolcanoes that comprise southeastern Zambales range hugging the southeastern edge of the Zambales ophiolite is part of a west-facing volcanic arc that extends for some 300 km along the western margin of central and southern Luzon whose development has been correlated to the subduction in the Manila Trench located off the west coast of Luzon. Prominent WNW-trending lineaments that cut across the ophiolite appear to be splays of the Philippine Fault whose intersection with the Mt. Pinatubo stratovolcano complex might have localized the emplacement of a number of intermediate stocks along with the gold-rich porphyry copper mineralizations associated with some of them.

Traditional engineering design for flotation circuits use the “Rule of Thumb” approach. Typically this uses a nominated maximum head grade for design. A scale-up factor is applied to laboratory flotation tests for residence time. This scale-up factor is usually based on a designers experience at other flotation sites and may or may not be relevant to the circuit being designed, or the flotation equipment being used. A small number of locked cycle tests are assumed to represent the ore body and the results of these are often used for financial analysis, independent of changes in mine plan throughput and mineralogy.The engineering “Rule of Thumb” approach is only strictly accurate where there is very little variability in throughput, head grade and mineralogy. It may provide accurate design for mature established operations where a brownfield expansion is being considered but is unlikely to provide accurate design for a new, greenfield site.The use of geometallurgical modeling with floatability component simulation provides a design methodology with significantly less associated risk. The use of geological data for optimisation of operating plants has become a significant part of the modern process mindset. The underlying principle is to use spatial metallurgical information to drive production planning, mine planning, blast design, blending strategies and plant set-up. At a design stage the process designer can use geometallurgical information to evaluate bottle necks and potential design flaws and propose the best investment strategy for the project benefit.This paper details the geometallurgical characterisation of the Andash deposit and methodology used to review the project’s detail design and projected production.

The Republic of Uganda aims to exploit its’ significant, un-developed iron ore resources to supply the required raw material for developing its’ iron and steel industry across all the stages of the supply chain. Large prospects of iron ore exists in Uganda in the eastern (Tororo) regions and southwestern (Kisoro-Kabale) regions of the country. The Kisoro-Kabale iron ore projects covers mineralisation in hematitic banded iron formation (itabirite) in the north-eastern Congo-Tanzania Craton; covering ten Iron ore prospects. The prospects include Kamena, Karukara, Nyamiringa, Kyanyamuzinda, Rugando, Katagata, Rwengongo, Kijuguta, Kihumuro and Katuna. High-grade hematite ore prospects in south-western Uganda have known grades ranging from 55 per cent to 68 per cent iron ore content with an exploration target estimated at over 500 million tonne (Mt). Small scale production of iron ore from the south-western regions provide raw material to existing steelmaking and direct reduction iron ore plants located in the Jinja and Iganga districts of eastern Uganda. Large quantities of iron ore and other steelmaking raw material, however, are required to be imported into Uganda due to the limited exploration and development of their own iron ore mining operations. A joint collaboration between the European Union (EU), the Department of the Geological Survey and Mines (DGSM), Ugandan Ministry of Mines in partnership with Australian drilling and mining consultancies, ADT Africa and Kalem Group as a EU funded project was undertaken during November 2022 and September 2023. Exploration and evaluation of the ten iron ore prospects in south-western Uganda was undertaken through geological mapping, drilling, assaying, and technical studies with the view to attract investment for the development of Uganda iron ore mining and steelmaking industry. The collaboration developed mineral exploration policy, guidelines and standards, an iron ore exploration manual, a geological data management policy, and to support the sustainable development of iron ore mining in Uganda through building the capacity of local Ugandan geology and mining personnel through the transfer of knowledge and expertise from experienced iron ore experts. The quantification of these resources is an important first step in assessing their economic potential and attracting mining investors. This paper presents an overview of the investigation program and the preliminary results as an important first step in attracting mining investors to this exciting new iron ore province.

This paper addresses critical environmental, health, regulatory and scientific concerns related to gold mining activities in the specific area of Barberton, Mpumalanga, South Africa. The paper thus calls for informed decisions to be made by the authorities to safeguard both the environment and people’s health. The novelty of this study is based on its comprehensive nature of the simultaneous assessment of both cyanide and potential toxic elements (PTEs) in tailings, while taking into account their composition variability over time. By combining these aspects, it is then possible to provide a holistic understanding of the contamination risks associated with mining tailings and thus justify the need for regular monitoring and supervision to ensure compliance against regulatory limits. Additionally, this paper considered investigating the dynamic nature of tailings, which are subject to changes in their chemical composition due to exposure to weathering by various agents. In this study, the determination of weak acid dissociable (WAD) and free cyanide in tailings was performed using a validated method employing the South African Council for Mineral Technology (MINTEK) Laboratory Cynoprobe. The PTEs in tailings were determined by an inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometer (ICP-OES). The results revealed that the tailings contained primarily substantial amounts of PTEs, including Fe (87 566 to 37 800 mg/L), Cu (271 to 110 mg/L), Mn (2100 to 680 mg/L), Ni (400 to 390 mg/L), Zn (180 to 68 mg/L), Cr (645 to 510 mg/L), As (450 to 128 mg/L), and Pb (up to 35 mg/L). The cyanide concentrations in tailings varied between 0.20 mg/L and 0.26 mg/L for free CN (with a mean of 0.23 mg/L in water leaching), 0.23 mg/L to 0.28 mg/L for free CN (with a mean of 0.25 mg/L in alkali leaching), 0.24 mg/L to 0.35 mg/L for WAD CN (with a mean of 0.28 mg/L in water leaching), and 0.31 mg/L to 0.39 mg/L for WAD CN (with a mean of 0.35 mg/L in alkali leaching). The measured concentration of cyanide and the PTEs was compared to the minimum permissible levels enforced by the South African Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) and the Water Research Commission (WRC) regulations that govern the disposal of hazardous constituents into the environment. Additionally, it was observed that the concentrations of contaminants in the tailings exceeded the acceptable minimum limits for hazardous waste exposure, posing risks to the environment and human health.

BHP Billiton Olympic Dam produces copper cathode, uranium oxide concentrate and refined gold and silver. The operation is comprised of an underground Mine and Processing Plant and is located 560 km north of Adelaide. Water for the operation is sourced from two wellfields located 120 and 200 km from the operation in the Great Artesian Basin (GAB) at a rate of approximately 36 ML/d. Regulatory drawdown limits were established to protect regional GAB springs and are monitored at compliance bores. Drawdown was predicted in the æOlympic Dam Environmental Impact StudyÆ (Kinhill, 1997); however, pumping at higher volumes may have the potential for increased drawdown resulting in a trend towards the compliance limits. In recent years increased usage of water in the Concentrator and Hydromet sections of the Processing Plant has caused excess process water reporting to the Tailings Retention System (TRS). This has resulted in excessive amounts of liquor ponding on the tailings cells with a potential impact being contamination due to seepage of liquor to groundwater. Effective management of water by the operation is necessary to both reduce GAB drawdown and reduce the amount of liquor on the tailings cells. A site working-group has been established to investigate and pursue opportunities to improve the water use efficiency of the operation. This paper will highlight the issue of water management at Olympic Dam and discuss the various options currently being investigated to improve management of this important resource.

The demand for steel products in modern society is prompting the iron ore industry to optimise their operations to ensure sustainability of fines and lump products. One of the key components in the iron ore transportation chain are belt conveyors. The energy consumption of modern belt conveyor systems has reduced considerably over the past few decades, however, there is still significant scope for further reductions, especially when heavily loaded long overland belt conveyors are considered. A new rail based continuous bulk material transportation system has been developed by researchers at the University of Newcastle to reduce the energy consumption of heavily loaded and long overland conveyors. The Rail-Running Belt Conveyor technology is a state-of-the-art continuous belt conveying technology which provides an innovative and novel departure from conventional continuous bulk material transportation systems with significant energy and economic benefits. This paper presents an overview of a Rail-Running Belt Conveyor variant which considers an enclosed belt. Enclosed belt conveying has the benefits of encapsulating the bulk material, and thereby reducing dust emissions and moisture ingress, in addition to being able to negotiate smaller radius horizontal and vertical curves leading to greater flexibility. To quantify the primary differences between conventional conveying technologies, the Denver office of thyssenkrupp Industrial Solutions (USA) developed a case study for an 11 km long conveyor. The conveyor design throughput was 2750 t/h and included a small net elevation loss of 10 m. When considering CAPEX the Rail-Running Pipe Conveyor equipment supply cost is approximately 45 per cent of the cost of a conventional pipe conveyor, while savings upwards of US$50M emerge for CAPEX combined with five years of OPEX. The savings vary with the topography and density of the bulk commodity, with iron ore generally showing increased savings because the high bulk density increases rubber losses in conventional conveyors.

The South Island Line (East) will be a medium-capacity railway covering approximately 7 km from Admiralty Station to South Horizons Station on the south side of Aberdeen Harbour in Hong Kong, with intermediate stations at Ocean Park, Wong Chuk Hang and Lei Tung.South Island Line (East) Contract 904 project is located on the island of Ap Lei Chau at the southern side of Hong Kong island and requires extensive construction works to be completed in close proximity to the existing residential estates of South Horizons and Lei Tung. The project also has areas of significant cultural heritage, including 18th and 19th century temples and historical gravesites. Owing to the site access constraints and location for the project, detailed planning and methodology innovations have been required to ensure the most effective and responsible means of delivering the project works. To excavate the tunnels using drill-and-blast techniques in these restricted locations, the maximum instantaneous charge weight that could be fired while blasting was severely limited. To overcome these restrictions, the project team developed and pioneered the use of ‘deck loading’ in Hong Kong to minimise the impact of blasting operations and has successfully implemented double- and triple-deck blasting operations during the completion of tunnel excavation works.Upon completion of the drill-and-blast excavation, the tunnel lining works were completed using both in situ concrete lining with travelling forms and permanent shotcrete works.CITATION:Curlewis, W, Cuthbert, Z and Hake, D, 2014. This paper describes the method of extracting sill pillars within the underground operation from under unconsolidated mullock fill at the Cracow Gold Mine. This pillar recovery method was initially successfully used to recover sill pillars at Crusader Mine, Western Australia in 2001. Globally significant resources have been sterilised due to the placement of loose rock fill above crown pillars and within adjacent stopes. The method described here offers significant opportunities to increase recovery of sill pillar recoveries.The royal orebody sill pillars at Cracow Gold Mine form a significant resource. Extraction of these pillars needed to be undertaken with minimal ore dilution and maximum ore recovery. The application that was selected to consolidate the loose mullock fill above each pillar used an injection grouting process (Minova FB200).Cracow Gold Mine mining method is bottom up bench mining. The pillars were left within the orebody to allow for stoping to commence whilst the decline was being developed. Due to the remainder of the orebody being extracted the only access to consolidate the backfill was from the sill pillar extraction level. Most aspects of process design are best addressed via bench scale or pilot plant scale test work. However, as experience is gained, fundamental or indicative data can provide more than adequate information to manage the risk associated with some process aspects of concentrator design.Historical precedence exists where minimal design test work has resulted in successful projects. On many occasions benchmarking, sometimes supported by fundamental data such as mineralogy, has been used to successfully develop effective process plant outcomes. Of course, this style of approach is most common with æfast trackÆ projects and often comes with the usual surprises that result from inadequate geometallurgy to define the project cash flow.This paper explores the risks and opportunities associated with the various facets of process development and design for a base metals concentrator. The Yallourn Mine (YM) commenced mining of brown coal in the 1920s under operation by the State Electricity Commission of Victoria (SECV), prior to it becoming privatised in 1996. The present owners of the YM, Energy Australia Yallourn (EAY), acquired the site in 2000 and intend to continue operations until scheduled closure in 2028. Brown coal extracted from the YM is fed into the Yallourn Power Station which supplies approximately 22 per cent of Victoria’s electricity. Water within the YM is collected and stored in the Township Field Fire Service Pond. Water levels within the Fire Service Pond (FSP) may fluctuate considerably depending on the requirement for storage at the site. With due consideration to the stability performance of mine batters adjoining the FSP, the authors performed slope stability assessments to evaluate the risk and consequence of batter instability during the potential pond filling as it approaches the ‘critical pool’. The critical pond is defined as the level at which the driving forces (destabilising forces) are at their greatest and the resisting forces (lake forces, friction) are at their lowest. This assessment was undertaken using the Mine Geotechnical Risk Index (MGRI) approach.

PT. Indo Muro Kencana (PT.IMK) is a gold mine that is located in Central Kalimantan, Indonesia. Drilling and blasting activity is applied in order to support mining production. Drilling and Blasting (D&B) planning is conducted by its engineers. A drilling and blasting contractor conducts drilling and blasting activity. The objective of this paper is to evaluate the implementation of the scaled depth of burial (Chiappetta and Treleven, 1997) in explosive charging sheet application to increase blast efficiency. The function of the scaled depth of burial is to maintain stemming height above explosive charge in order to prevent the ‘over energy’ condition, to reduce the excessive fly rock possibility, to maintain rock fragmentation (digger’s productivity) and to increase blast efficiency. The focus of this paper is to implement the scaled depth of burial as a reference in D&B planning and practice, especially in designing stemming height. The purpose of this paper is to validate that the scaled depth of burial can be used as an engineering tool in D&B practice in PT.IMK. However, scaled depth of burial cannot applied as an engineering tool to determine stemming height above explosive charge for trim blastholes and secondary blasting area. In general, the implementation of the scaled depth of burial in PT.IMK is applicable for production blastholes (ore and waste blasting). In conclusion, it is clear that scaled depth of burial can be used as an engineering tool to create explosive charging sheet and also to increase blast efficiency (ore and waste blasting) in PT.IMK.
