The mining industry often embraces mine closure criteria that require the reinstatement of predisturbance or even presettlement (ie historic) ecosystems. However, the extent and severity of disturbance associated with most mining activities mean that critical physical and biological characteristics are irreversibly altered. Consequently, it is rare that a reconstructed landscape can support ecosystems even close to the historic condition, and this rarity is reflected in the small number of mine leases that have been extinguished by attainment of such completion criteria. Novel ecosystems are defined as those in which some or all physical and biotic components are irreversibly different from the historic condition. Recognition of the concept of novel ecosystems allows mine closure criteria to be set according to attainable physical and biological conditions that provide safe, stable and manageable environments with acceptable ecological functions. We propose that a landscape that first maximises physical stability and economy yet will provide a range of environments for vegetation communities and fauna habitats that may be very different from those existing prior to a disturbance should be considered suitable alternatives to, eg targeting idealised historic environments. As a result, mine closure criteria should be established by detailed description of the best attainable physical conditions, with negotiated identification and testing of the most appropriate biological systems for the various parts of the reconstructed landscape. As a general practice, revegetation would use native, but not necessarily local species if the new physical environment is not conducive to the survival and growth of local species. These new ecosystems would need to be managed in perpetuity, although the intensity of management might be low if landscape design and engineering are combined with appropriate species introductions. Here, we suggest an abbreviated procedure that may be adapted in light of local conditions and circumstances for guiding decisions influencing the physical and biological properties of reconstructed landscapes that will enable novel ecosystems to meet realistic closure criteria.CITATION:Doley, D and Audet, P, 2014. With the burgeoning opportunities for new gold mines to be developed the opportunity now exists for a reassessment of the optimal processing path for these gold ores. Projects have traditionally followed the path of whole ore cyanidation with either Carbon In Pulp (CIP), Carbon In Leach (CIL) or Merrill Crowe. The challenge ahead is whether these traditional processing methods are the best option for stakeholders, or to go beyond CIP and use a combination of currently available technologies that can be used to provide gold recovery at a significantly reduced capital cost and minimal deleterious impact on the environment. Either stand alone or combinations of gravity concentration and flotation, can produce a gold bearing concentrate that can then be fed directly to a batch or continuous intensive cyanidation unit. Treatment of a gravity/flotation concentrate by intensive cyanidation may be processed by the InLine Leach Reactor (ILR) developed by Gekko Systems of Australia. The advantages of the technology combining gravity/flotation followed by intensive cyanidation are significantly reduced capital costs; improved safety due to reduced cyanide inventories; the majority of tailings un-contaminated by cyanide; less energy required due to an opportunity for an increase in grind size û reducing green house gas emissions; detoxification of concentrate tailings can minimise tailings disposal and containment requirements.

The Wabu Ridge Gold Skarn deposit is located at elevations of up to 3100 metres above sea level, in the Central Highlands of Irian Jaya, Indonesia, 35 km NNW of the Grasberg porphyry deposit. Wabu is a grass-roots discovery in an area with no previous gold mining history or record of gold mineralisation. A geological resource of 117.26 million tonnes at an average grade of 2.16 g/t Au (1.0 g/t Au cut-off) has been defined to-date. Mineralisation is hosted within a skarn occurring along the southern boundaries of the Late-Miocene age monzonite-diorite Pagane intrusive complex. The intrusive complex occurs in the footwall of a major EW structure, the Derewo fault, which displays sinistral strike-slip and reverse fault movement. The Derewo fault separates Derewo metamorphic units to the north from platform sediments of the Australian craton to the south. The skarn has a strike length of 6 km and is up to 1.5 km wide. It is developed within calcareous shelf sediments of the Tertiary New Guinea limestone group and is dominated by prograde garnet development. Gold mineralisation was deposited during retrograde alteration and is directly associated with arsenophyrite and bismuth minerals. Retrograde alteration is distinguished by a sequence of clinopyroxene , magnetite, epidote and hornblende, biotite and chlorite and lastly carbonate. Gold is associated with the biotite/ chlorite phase together with sulphides and precipitated as the result of fluid mixing. The Wabu Ridge Gold Skarn deposit was identified in April 1990 during a regional program of helicopter assisted stream sediment sampling of -80 mesh (180 microns) fraction and panned concentrate sampling. The initial discovery sample site was situated 15 km down stream from the deposit and returned 1.49 ppm Au for the stream sediment sample and 138 ppm Au for the panned concentrate sample. A regional airborne helicopter magnetics survey, conducted in early-1992, helped defined the main magnetite associated skarn zone and the extent of associated igneous rocks. Detailed follow-up commenced in May 1992 and consisted of detailed mapping, soil sampling and ground magnetics prior to drilling the first hole in October 1992. Drilling to-date has delineated a contained geologic resource of 8.1 million ounces of gold and potential exists for a larger resource.

Mining in the state of Western Australia (WA) formally commenced in the 1840s, and over the ensuing 180 years has evolved to be the epicentre of the Australian mining industry and a significant contributor to the national economy. The lithology of WA is replete with mineralisation that hosts uranium and ‘critical minerals’ required for the global renewable energy sector. The state’s first uranium mine is under development, and high levels of activity are occurring in the state’s nascent critical minerals sector, with 168 WA-based companies pursuing rare earth-bearing minerals, 51 of which are actively drilling on their tenements. WA’s mineral deposits typically contain levels of the naturally occurring radionuclides (NORs) thorium-232 and uranium-238 that are elevated above the global crustal average. Workers are exposed to NORs during the mining and mineral extraction processes, and radiation doses that exceed applicable exposure standards may eventuate. The research traces the history of worker radiation doses from 1977 to 2020, finding the maximum dose was 163.4 mSv, more than eight times the current derived annual dose limit. Whilst 93.5 per cent of all workers received doses of less than 5.0 mSv per annum, the potential for elevated doses is ever-present as witnessed by 10.3 mSv reported in 2009/2010. The increase in activity coincides with a revision of the dose coefficients (DCs) associated with the intake of radionuclides. The research evaluates the revised DCs and forecasts doses from inhalation of radioactive dusts will nearly double, and lead to workers receiving doses exceeding 5 mSv for the first time since 2009/2010. The research finds that the current regulatory framework is fit-for-purpose. However, inter-agency relationships, and the capacity of the regulator to effectively regulate the current and future number of mining operations is questioned. The mining industry is vulnerable to capability and capacity constraints – but has failed to respond to issues in relation to competent radiation safety officers first raised by the Winn Inquiry (Winn, Mathews and Tough, 1984). Disconcertingly, monitoring of worker exposures to NORs reached a nadir in 2021, raising questions as to the veracity of worker doses reported to the regulatory agency. The research recommends personal dust sampling be prioritised.

This paper demonstrates use of remotely sensed imagery in promoting sustainable mining. Remote sensing technology can be used during all phases of a mining project û from evaluating the resource, to making extraction more cost-effective, through to monitoring, mine closure and remediation. Use of the new generation of satellite platforms with the capability of acquiring satellite data with higher spectral and spatial resolution have the capability to emerge as essential indicator for sustainable development in the minerals industry. A life cycle approach to satellite imagery is discussed. The use of an imagery of the site prior to mining activity establishes the environmental baseline, guides mitigation measures and eventual help in suggesting remediation. Remote imagery provides the cost-effective means of monitoring reclamation, including the growth of planted vegetation, of the mine site and surrounding area. The latest advancements in satellite remote sensing are highlighted to meet the newer challenges of sustainable mining practices. Some of the worldwide successful remote sensing applications for the measurement and evaluation of the sustainable development impact of mining operations are described. Presently available source of imagery and its comparative advantages and disadvantages are provided as a guide. Finally, the limitations of this tool are indicated.

This paper discusses pore pressures in the embankments of tailings dams by comparing real world data with common design assumptions. Assessment of pore pressures has implications on material behaviour interpretation from CPT investigations and, therefore, on the design. For example, the assumption of hydrostatic pressure is conservative for limit equilibrium stability analyses but may be un-conservative in assessing the potential for contractive behaviour and strength loss during shearing. This paper presents some real world data, the investigation methods to determine the pore pressures, and subsequent interpretation of CPT data and material parameters such as the state parameter. It also examines the design implications of assuming a hydrostatic pressure distribution, by comparing results from that assumption with those obtained using the real pore pressures.CITATION:Johns, D and Murray, L, 2018. The Ban Houayxai mine (BHX) is a relatively low-grade, low-cost, open pit gold-silver deposit in Laos operated by Phu Bia Mining, a subsidiary of PanAust. The ore production rate at BHX is 4.5 Mt/a, with direct tipping to a semi-autogenous grinding/ball mill circuit with a carbon-in-leach process plant. Approximately 100 000 oz of gold is produced per annum.The operation is located in mountainous terrain with minimal run-of-mine stockpiling. This results in limited capacity for blending from stockpile, with the mill instead reliant upon direct feed ex-pit. Since commissioning in 2012, the plant has seen significant variation in milling rates due to variability in the feed properties of the oxide, transition and primary ores. As part of an ongoing continuous improvement program, an integrated approach was initiated, focusing on maintaining and enhancing production in the future as the proportion of harder primary ore increases. This will specifically focus on direct blending from the loading face using the ore properties and blast fragmentation to maintain mill throughput.This approach was based on the concept of physical assets management, commencing with improving information and knowledge of the condition of the orebody through modelling the characteristics, variability and performance of the feed for processes relevant to throughput. These models are used to support both mine and process plant production planning.The key ore feed characteristics and parameters modelled for the life-of-mine are blastability index, powder factor, crushability or impact resistance and grindability. These predictive spatial models were based on the data from diamond drill holes used in resource definition and geotechnical drilling programs by integrating geotechnical, geological, geochemical and metallurgical data.At the early stages of implementation, the models are being utilised for ore blending decisions to provide guidance and support for budgeting, long-term mine planning, blast design for mill feed and providing the mill with an expectation of performance.CITATION:Jackson, J, Gaunt, J and Astorga, M, 2014. In the course of an investigation of the influence of bismuth on copper carried out some years ago, (1) the author found that phosphorus exerted a beneficial effect on bismuth-copper alloys of low bismuth and oxygen content by neutralizing the embrittling effect of the bismuth. In the intervening years, a further examination of bismuth-phosphorus-copper alloys has been canied out and the influence of other elements and combinations of elements on copper containing bismuth has been studied.The results recorded in the present paper are part of this investigation.MATERIALSAll the alloys were made from high-grade copper (KS.A. wire-bar) of the following composition: copper 99·95%, oxygen 0,040'%, iron 0·0015%, sulphur less than 0-001%, bismuth less than (j>'OOl%, other elements each less than O· 0010/<-. The bar was hot rolled and cold drawn to strip which was cut into short lengths and cleaned in nitric acid ready for melting.A piece of this 'strip was drawn to wire 0·08 in. diam., annealed at 5000 C, and measured for electrical conductivity as a check on purity. The result was 101·5% of the I.E'.C. standard.In making the alloys, phosphorus was added as 14% phosphor-copper, bismuth as 17% bismuth-copper, and the other constituents either as copper alloys or as elements of a high degree of purity.PREPARATIQN OF STRIPSThe charges were melted in plumbago crucibles (Morgan salamander brand) in an oil-fired furnace, Le;, in the manner commonly adopted in industrial practice. The copper was first melted under charcoal, well stirred with a chaned stick, and the necessary alloying elements added and stirred in with the stick. The weight of a charge varied according to requirements but generally was about 4 lb. The charges were poured into slightly tapered brass moulds heated to about 1000 C and dressed with a mixture of mineral oil and tallow. They were not only poured under charcoal through the burning mould dressing but also- through a ring of flame produced by burning kerosene on asbestos cord wrapped round the top of the mould. Experiments carried out with plain copper proved that by this means oxygen could be excluded from the stream of metal. The billets were 7·5 in. long x O·83 in. diam. x 1·3 lb. weight.The billets were cropped about 1 in. from the top, cleaned in nitric acid, and measured for density by the usual method of weighing in air and -in water. As these measurements were required only as a check on casting, technique a high degree of accuracy was not essential (accuracy = -+ 0·2%).

The use of cemented rock fill (CRF) for support of open stope walls has increased in the Australian underground mines operations over the last five years due in part to its low capital cost. In open stoping the exposed CRF masses require adequate strength and stiffness, in order to resist the forces and to limit the displacement associated with movements in the rock mass surrounding the excavations. The CRF material preparation often involves the use of large particles, either from crushed rock or from development mining waste sometimes up to 1 m in diameter. However, the use of waste rock, which has a poorly graded particle size distribution may not achieve the required minimum target strength due to segregation and large air voids within the fill mass. This paper describes the optimisation of CRF strength by either crushing the waste rock or the addition of sand to the mix. Both methods increase the level of fines in the mix design. Cylindrical samples having 400 mm diameter and 800 mm heights were prepared for uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) testing. The UCS test was determined using the Western Australian School of Mines (WASM) large-scale static test frame. The laboratory results were compared with a database of large-scale CRF strength mixed without sand from a number of mine sites around Australia. The comparison shows a significant strength development in the CRF mixing with addition of sand for a given cement percentage. Due to the higher strengths achieved by the addition of sand and the crushing of the waste material these CRF types require less cement to achieve the same strength. It has long been recognised that narrow vein mining needs innovative approaches to mine access and mining methods in order to improve the economics of this vital part of the mining industry. The mining equipment used currently requires large openings in narrow vein-type deposits making mining operations uneconomical. In view of this and other shortcomings of the current mining practices, a study was initiated to investigate the potential of using low profile electric loader with mounted conveyor in conjunction with the electric monorail haulage system (EMTS) to load and haul the blasted material, particularly in decline development and main haulages. Computer simulation based on the General Purpose Simulation System/Henrikson (GPSS/H) is used to model the system and evaluate its performance. The results are compared with those for conventional mining using trucks and loaders. The EMTS provides competitive haulage rates in substantially smaller excavations than is currently achievable. According to simulation results, the electric loader in conjunction with the EMTS had the same number of blasts as the conventional system and hence the same advance rate of 3.33 m per 12 hour shift. Management of historic tailings is a major challenge facing the mining industry and its regulators. However, through improved mineralogical and chemical characterisation of such materials the opportunity to develop better rehabilitation strategies arises. Microanalytical techniques including microscopy, mineral liberation analysis and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICPMS) allow for improved tailings characterisation – but the challenge posed by these techniques is how to use them effectively. Additionally, data sets collected by such techniques must be properly integrated, only then can they assist in the identification of the most appropriate rehabilitation strategies. A study conducted at the Old Tailings Dam (OTD) located at the Savage River Mine, Tasmania allowed for the integrated use of several microanalytical techniques to help evaluate the benefits of a shallow water cover as a potential rehabilitation strategy. Samples (n = 144) from 14 trenches and 11 boring cores (2 m maximum depth) were collected across the OTD. These were subjected to routine acid-base accounting, with a subset subjected to detailed mineralogy using a modified sulfide alteration index (SAI), X-ray diffractometry and mineral liberation analysis (MLA). In addition, representative samples (n = 6) from across the OTD were subjected to laser-ablation ICPMS to characterise the pyrite chemistry. Our results showed that tailings in the northern area submerged under a natural water cover were relatively unoxidised from approximately 1 m depth, with SAI values of 1 to 2. Tailings from the subaerial southern portion were extensively oxidised to approximately 35 cm depth (SAI = maximum 5.8), with fresher materials observed underneath (SAI = 5 to 5.8). Pyrite from across the OTD is enriched in Co, Cu and Ni. Through the integrated application of microanalytical tools, we determined that establishing a water cover of at least 1.5 m depth across the OTD is a suitable rehabilitation option for this historic site. The objectives of mining grade control are presented and examples of the techniques used in various open pit and underground mines are used to define the attributes of good grade control. Reasons are discussed for the success of various improved practices. The progressive development of grade control is presented and the balance between quantitative and qualitative data is analysed. The skills and resources required for grade control on mine sites that are using best practice are also presented. A number of problems in grade control have been solved recently however there are still issues that need to be addressed. Examination of the grade control process frequently stops after sample quality has been examined. There is much more beyond this that can now be optimised using conditional simulation models. Other future directions of mining grade control are also suggested. An extensive bibliography of published papers on grade control is included that will be maintained and updated on a website.

Privately-owned companies considering investing in the resources sector can optimise their investment decisions by adopting a systematic technical assessment of acquisition assets, similar to the approach commonly adopted by public financial institutions and publicly-listed companies.Technical due diligence provides a process to identify key geological, mining, geotechnical, metallurgical, environmental and social risks and opportunities and determine the most likely business case and valuation of assets. Technical due diligence is commonly carried out in parallel with legal, commercial and financial due diligence, often involving the acquirer, to maximise the understanding of the investment.There are significant advantages in investors conducting a comprehensive technical due diligence, which typically involves site visits and project assessment to international standards by an independent, multidisciplinary team of experts. The outcomes provide the opportunity for the investor to make early, informed decisions and to understand and manage risks.Technical due diligence may be carried out at several stages: when considering and weighing up a number of investment options, prior to and during a transaction or immediately post-transaction. In the first stage, the outcomes will inform the choice of investment and, more particularly, whether there are any fundamental flaws in the projects being considered. In the second stage, due diligence outcomes can inform the level of investment and approach to risk management and planning. Filtered dry stack tailing storage facilities offer many advantages over thickened tailing storage facilities and yet, most of the mining companies still prefer the latter.Some of the advantages of filtered dry stack tailing storage facilities are: increased structural integrity of the tailing storage facility, which is even more critical in areas of high seismicity, close to nearby communities or environmentally sensitive areas; maximised water recovery which is particularly important in arid environments where water is an extremely valuable resource and its supply is regulated; optimised recovery of valuable metals in the process water, avoiding high cyanide concentration going to detoxification (both aspects haven’t been emphasised enough in technical papers on this subject); optimised space to store the tailings in mountainous regions; minimised elevation of embankment height, providing a safe option to store the tailings in places where there is limited area available; simplified license approval to operate where the tailing facility is a big issue; and avoidance of potential problems with nearby communities.Filtered dry stack tailing storage facilities have some disadvantages such as: technology limitations in operations that process high throughputs (eg >50 000 tpd) as they require many filters resulting in high maintenance and operating costs; higher capital cost; low efficiency in the filtration process, particularly in ores with high clay content increasing operating problems and capital cost; the new technology risk with possible debottlenecking issues and a longer time to achieve the design throughput; and the need to treat larger water flow rates when the water balance is negative.This paper analyses: the operating practices of Mexican gold and silver operations using filtered dry stacking storage facilities; implementation issues, advantages and disadvantages; quantifiable reductions in gold and silver losses and actual lower detoxification cost; and current trends to use filtered dry stacking storage facilities in new projects. In 2014, Arrium completed an optimisation program on its magnetite concentrator, enabling a reduction in the overall cost base of producing concentrate through an increased ability to treat a wider range of ore types, previously considered waste. The development was the culmination of four years of work, conducted in house by Arrium’s mining development group. The overall intent of the plant design focused on improving the concentrator’s ability to treat a wider range of magnetite ore types. Metallurgical analysis of these feed ore groups outlined a need for more grinding power if production quality was to be maintained and throughput increased. As such, a tertiary grinding circuit was designed which, alongside the rectification of key operational bottlenecks, would allow the plant to continue to produce concentrate at the required specification and rate. The technology chosen for the tertiary grinding application was the XT IsaMillTM, which is known for efficient fine grinding when compared to conventional ball milling. The transfer sizes between the existing comminution circuits were coarsened, allowed for the treatment of different ores at the required rates. The optimisation project was successfully completed in February 2014 after a three month commissioning phase. By sharing my experiences I want to encourage you to consider your own experience with leadership, taking on change, learning from and contributing to the development of others.I have been very fortunate to be part of many new innovations into underground mining over the past 40 or so years; most of it with Conzinc Rio Tinto Australia (CRA)/Rio Tinto operations.•From hand-held drills and a homemade single boom Jumbo mounted on an old Airtrak, to the sophisticated twin boom jumbos with high speed drifters all controlled by an on-board computer;•from a Scraper winch and a Wagner 2D loader to fully automated electric LHDs that navigate to the tipple, empty the bucket and return to where they come from;•from hand-held cut-and-fill and timber stoping in Broken Hill to the bulk mining methods of a block cave where at Northparkes we mined more ore in a month than we mined in the total five years of operations at Currawang;•from hand-held scaling and bolting with no skin protection to installing ground support with Jumbos and sophisticated Cable Bolters and the introduction of in cycle shotcrete;•from hand-held ladder rising and shaft sinking to Box Hole rigs, Raise Bore Machines and Blind Hole shaft sinking; and•from Gelignite based AN60 stick explosives, ANFO, fuse firing and half second detonators to Powergel, Emulsions and electronic computer programmed detonators that can somehow be initiated by ‘Blast Ped’ travelling through the rock.

The total number of tailings accidents has reduced from over 50/decade in the 1960s-1980s to less than 30/decade in the 2000s to 2010s. However, the rate of significant tailings dam failures has not been reduced. The significant tailings dam failures the mining industry experienced in the recent history include: Merriespruit, South Africa, 1994; Los Frails, Spain, 1998; Kolontár, Hungry, 2010; Mount Polley, Canada, 2014; and Samarco, Brazil, 2015. The conventional Factor of Safety approach itself may not be enough to further reduce the rate of significant tailings failures due to its limitations such as uncertainty. For example, the same factor of safety could have a vast range of annual probability of failure for different tailings dams, and insufficient consideration of failure consequence. This paper presents a risk based approach for design with the objective being to minimise tailings dam failures, especially those significant tailings failures with high consequence and low probability. This approach includes risk based design and risk management using bowtie tools. In the risk based design, quantitative analysis will be used to estimate the annual probability of failure and the tolerable failure criteria is linked to the consequence category. Bowtie analyses will be used to understand hazards and risks and identify and select independent controls that are effective in preventing and mitigating catastrophic failures. Characterisation of non-plastic segregating tailings presents a number of challenges: the material cannot typically be sampled in an undisturbed state, remoulded samples exhibit different behaviour to undisturbed samples, penetration test interpretation methods suffer from uncertainty in their application to many tailings and the tailings gradation changes considerably over relatively small lateral distances and depth. In addition, the process liquor of many Western Australian tailings contains large quantities of salt and other dissolved solids, which can further complicate laboratory test programs. To provide an insight into the variability at a typical gold tailings facility, four gradations of the material were tested to obtain critical state parameters. Historic surficial tube samples were collated and organised by gradation to establish the range of densities typical after settling and air drying. These were then compared to laboratory-accessible densities. Finally, tube samples were tested in the laboratory to observe if the large-strain material behaviour was consistent with the inferred critical state parameters for similar gradations. Site pore fluid was used in the testing of the tube samples in an attempt to assess if the pore fluid modified the critical state conditions of the material.The tube samples tested all exhibited strongly dilative behaviour in undrained shear. Of the four samples tested, only one exhibited behaviour consistent with the inferred location of the critical state line relevant to the material’s gradation. The reasons for the unexpected behaviour of the other three samples include layering within the samples, the potential influence of large quantities of salt in the pore fluid and likely differences in the gradation of the fines components of samples taken from mid-beach and the decant area.CITATION:Reid, D, 2015. Geomembranes selected for various applications often start with considering target properties developed by industry organisations such as Geosynthetic Research Institute (GRI), and test methods developed by ASTM and other Standards organisations The geomembrane types are typically, initially selected based on manufacturers recommendations and chemical resistance data from the manufacturer or industry knowledge. Geomembranes considered for this project included materials with material properties that exceeded the minimum target values of various test methods. The difficulty is in selecting which parameters are most important for a particular application and also what service life can be expected for the geomembrane under various chemical and environmental exposure conditions. Accelerated aging testing of candidate geomembranes in simulated exposure conditions can be useful to select the preferred geomembrane and predict the service life of the geomembrane under different exposure conditions. The exposure conditions of immersion in acidic tailings liquor, splash zone and freeboard zone were considered for evaporation ponds on a site with significant heat and UV radiation. Candidate geomembranes considered a range of different types of polyethylene liners. The results of the accelerated aging testing have allowed the selection of the geomembrane for the range of exposure conditions and evaluation of the expected service life of the geomembrane.

The issue of retrenchment is a topic of considerable relevance for the Papua New Guinea (PNG) mining, petroleum and gas industries. The unique environments in which Porgera Joint Venture (PJV) and other similar operations operate are likely to confront these industries with particular dilemmas that will require a range of investments to mitigate the problems associated with retrenchment and employment. This paper discusses retrenchment and employment in the PNG mining industry using the specific case study of PJV. The paper deals with the issue of employment and retrenchment of local workforces in the PNG context, which presents a serious challenge for the resources industry and the achievement of sustainable development objectives. The issue of future retrenchment of the workforce as a result of mine closure is an obvious challenge for both PJV and the Porgeran community at large, who have now come to rely upon both the employment opportunities presented through the mining. This paper examines these challenges and in doing so highlights some progress made by PJV. The paper also discusses downsizing, strategic practices and holistic approaches of retrenchment and employment. In doing so the paper highlights issues that have been overlooked in both academic and applied studies from global and local perspectives in the PNG mining sector. The latter sections articulate the relevance of the information provided by the case study in the wider context of retrenchment. The conclusion promotes a perspective that a great deal more investment will be required by all stakeholders to respond to the challenges of managing retrenchments and mine closure.
