In view of the extensive use of the brasses and bronzes in engineering practice it is indeed surprising that so little scientific work has been done on the oxides in these alloys. Recognition of the ill effects of these compounds is universally accorded, both in foundry procedure and in such specifications as cover the melting of these useful mixtures. In the latter, limits, for example, are placed on the proportions of scrap metal In the charge, and clauses governing the use of fluxes are included, the addition of fluxes to the charge being made with the object of avoiding oxidation during the process of melting and of subducing and separating non-metal-lic matter from the melt.1 In the manufacture of brass it occasionally, though rarely, occurs that the virgin metals, copper and zinc, alone arc used. In the event of virgin metals being employed, that of the higher melting point is always melted first. If it is melted under suitable conditions, little or no oxidation will occur. Whether oxidation has occurred or not, however, can best be determined by microscopic examination of a sample taken from the melt. Avoidance of Oxidation in Furnace Practice When melting virgin copper in crucible practice, the avoidance of oxidation is not difficult, nor is it hard to forestall trouble in the electric furnace. In gas-fired furnaces of the barrel type, however, the avoidance of oxidation is almost impossible, no matter what the condition of the flame, the flux employed, or the amount of charcoal included in the charge. Copper melted in furnaces of this type is almost invariably so highly oxidized as to requirc very considerable additions of such deoxi-dizers as, for example, silicon copper to render it free from cuprous oxide. As a result,, the castings produced are decidedly inferior, on account of the. large amount of silica which is engendered in the metal as a result of the reaction, Cu2O + Si = SiO2 + 2Cu. The deoxidation of such oxidized copper could, of course, be effected by means of zinc with, however, even more disastrous results.

Single-phase silver antimony telluride has been prepared by zone-melting techniques using initial compositions of A new phase appears upon prolonged annealing of this material, but the reaction does not appear to be a simple eutectoid decomposition. A complete analysis of the phase equilibria is complicated by the slow kinetics involved. The Hall coefficient, magneto -resistance, electrical resistivity, and Seebeck coefficient are all sensitive to the presence of second phases. The low Hall mobilities measured for single-phase material indicate that the usual band theory is inadequate to explain the observed transport properties in the system. Density anomalies of up to 2.5 pet between measured and theoretical density were observed but are not conclusive evidence for a defect structure. COMPOSITIONS in the Ag-Sb-Te system have been studied previously by several investigators.1"18 The interest in this system arises from potential thermoelectric applications of alloys on the Ag2Te-Sb2Tes vertical section. Although the composition corresponding to the formula AgSbTe, has received most attention, it has been found to consist of more than one phase.7'8 A thorough understanding of the properties of this heterogeneous material has been impeded by both lack of knowledge of the properties of the homogeneous phases comprising it and the problem of analysis of transport properties in an inhomogeneous system. The present work describes the preparation of the homogeneous ternary phase and the corresponding electrical properties of both homogeneous and heterogeneous material. MATERIAL PREPARATION Most specimens for this investigation were prepared by encapsulating the elements in evacuated quartz tubes after which they were melted and homogenized in the liquid state. The ambient temperature was then dropped to 500°C and the resulting ingot zone melted. The growth rate, width of zone, stoichiometry, and number of passes have an effect on the resultant microstructure. Grains several centimeters in length were easily produced by this method. Other solidification techniques were also used, including uniform slow cooling of the entire specimen and rapid freezing. The microstructures of specimens produced by these techniques frequently differed appreciably from similar compositions prepared by zoning. A variety of nonequilibrium microstructures characterized by long needlelike particles resulted from the rapid-freeze method. PHASE EQUILIBRIA The lack of information on phase equilibria is a major difficulty associated with a comprehensive study of the Ag-Sb-Te system. Considerable confusion has resulted from the use of the formula AgSbTe, to identify the cubic ternary intermediate phase even though it has been established that material of this stoichiometry normally contains AgzTe as a second phase.798 In this paper, silver antimony telluride will denote the cubic ternary intermediate phase comprising the major portion of AgSbTe,. The term "single phase" will denote material which consists of only the cubic phase (as evidenced by metallographic examination and X-ray diffraction) and the term heterogeneous will describe multiphase material containing AgzTe, SbzTe3, or other phases in addition to the cubic phase. The single-phase material may actually contain a variety of inhomogeneities—gradual changes in composition on a macroscopic scale, localized fluctuations in composition, clusters or other products of early stages of the precipitation process, and a variety of point and line defects—all of which will not be detected by the present techniques for determining homogeneity. Single-phase material has been prepared from compositions close to 59 mole pct SbzTe3 21 (this notation refers to the location on the Ag,Te-Sb2TeS vertical section). Zone widths of =2 cm and growth rates 51.2 cm per hr were used. The single-phase region at elevated temperatures extends off the vertical section to a composition which can be expressed approximately as Ag,,SbzgTes,.9 The latter two compositions as well as AgSbTe, are represented in the conventional Gibbs triangle in Fig. 1. E. D. TILLYER,* Southbridge, Mass. (written discussion?).-It is quite generally known that there is very little that is standard about a mercurial thermometer at temperatures above 212° F. (100° C.) because so many precautions must be taken-precautions that are rarely realized in practice-such as depth of immersion, aging, elastic fatigue, separation of mercury column, and accidental deformation from very slight excess temperature. One cannot help wishing that Mr. Brown would dwell at greater length on the practical side of both radiation and optical pyrometey, both of which have great possibilities as commercial instruments. In the radiation pyrometer we have ideal conditions for a permanent instru-ment, no materials being exposed to excessive temperatures or subjected to contamination from the furnace fumes which may raise such havoc with an ordinary pyrometer. The development of a radiation pyrometer requires a thermocouple having a relatively high electromotive force but which need stand temperatures of only 200° F. or 300° F. instead of 1500 to 2000° F., which is required of even a base-metal couple. The galva-nometer, if located near the thermocouple, does not need to have a high resistance as at such low temperatures no changes can occur in the thermocouple that will affect its resistance and, consequently, the in-dicated temperature.

The purpose of this paper is to present some data and comparisons regarding three types of Rheolaveur plants washing bituminous coal from the Pittsburgh seam. It deals only with the sections that handle coarse coal. The Rheolaveur system consists of launders or troughs in which coal and its associated impurities are conveyed by water. The impurities. being heavier than the coal, settle toward the bottoms of the launders and are drawn off through specially designed openings called Rheo boxes. Fundamentally, each plant consists of straight-sided, flat-bottomed launders of varying width and length, each launder equipped with one or more Rheo boxes for the removal of high-grauity fractions of the feed that are undesirable in the cleaned coal. Each launder has at least two longitudinal sections, the first with a slope of from 11/2 to 4 in. per foot of length, called the classification section. The single-box launder has a classification section followed by a washing section ahead of the box. A two-box launder is a single-box launder followed by a washing section and a second box. The slope of the washing section between the first and second boxes is determined to some extent by tonnage. At the end of the classification section, which may. vary from 8 to 15 ft. in length, the slope abruptly flattens out to a slope of from 92' to 1 in. per foot of length. This flatter section of the launder, called the washing section, may vary from a few feet, in a single-box launder, to 15 ft., in a two-box launder. Raw coal entering the head end of what we choose to call the "primary" launder or launders is pushed down the classification section by a stream of water entering the head end of the launder with the coal. As it strikes the washing section, of lower pitch, the velocity of flow is retarded and the heavier particles of slate, pyrite, bone, etc., take their places on the bottom and are drawn off as they pass over the Rheo boxes. THE 135th meeting of the Institute was the largest and most enthusiastic that has ever been held, sur-passing passing in numbers attending even the notable meeting of 1920. The total registration was 1493. The technical sessions and round tables, 38 in number, were spread through four instead of three days as heretofore in order to reduce the number of conflicts, and most of the A. S. T. M. Committee meetings were held over until Friday. Even so it was necessary to schedule as many as seven simultaneous technical sessions, and there were usually at least two going at once that each wished to attend. Three special luncheons and five group dinners were held, each of which strung out into an informal meeting, and yet approximately 500 came to-gether each day at the general luncheon and over 700 attended the banquet on Wednesday night. The smok-er attracted 402, and the various social affairs under the charge of the general or the women's committees were all crowded. From 10.00 a.m. Monday to 11.00 p.m. Thursday there was one long series of meetings after which the members went home to catch up on their sleep. The comment on the meeting of a member of one of the other societies, who had occasion to be much in the building, was the markedly friendly spirit of the gathering, the large numbers who were evidently old friends and acquaintances. This does seem to set the miners off somewhat from other engineering groups. So many have shared the same blankets and beans at one time or another that the annual meeting has truly come to be a family reunion.

THE Sierra Mojada mining district is situated in western Coahuila, about 8 km. east of the Chihuahua state line, and about one-half way from the northern to the southern extremity of the state. It is at the terminus of the Mexican Northern R. R., 125 km. northeast of Escalón, Chihuahua; also about 240 km. due west of Monclova, Coahuila. The altitude is approximately 1500 m. above sea level. The Sierra Mojada valley is about 10 km. long, from east to west, with a width of 1 to 2 km. It is approached from the east through the Puerto del Oro, where the Mexican Northern R. R. enters the valley; the slope from west to east is gentle. The Sierra Mojada, of which about. 300 m. is an almost vertical wall, bounds the valley on the south side; on the north side, the slope to the crest of Sierra Planchada is more gradual, rising only 200 or 300 m. above the valley. Water is relatively scarce in the district, and there are no running streams. The rainy season, usually beginning at the middle of June, lasts through July, and occasionally into August or September. In some years the rains fail entirely. The slope of the ground is such that nearly all the water immediately runs off. The arroyos along 'the flanks of the mountains are not very deep, but in heavy rains, sometimes approaching cloudbursts, a tremendous volume of water rushes down them, carrying large boulders. A certain amount of seepage collects in the agglomerate, lying below the conglomerate, and is retained in the local fractures. Some shallow wells have been sunk in this agglomerate, and one well over 150 m. deep was sunk on, the Volcan ranch, supplying about 76 1. (20 gal.) per min. A considerable supply of water is collected in large earth reservoirs in and below the town of Esmeralda. In ordinary years this supply will last until January or February, after which the Volcan well has to be depended on until the next rainy season.

The mining regulations of British Columbia and Mexico present some features which might well be copied in the United States, if we are to have a complete revision of the laws governing mining titles. 1. First and foremost is the "squarc" location, which would mean the abolition of extralateral rights. This is a condition in both of the countries above named which has seemed to work no hardship upon any one, and certainly the limitation of underground rights by vertical planes through all lines makes a locator's rights clear. In view of the long and costly litigation which has involved so seriously many of our most important mining districts, it would seem to be the part of wisdom to avoid a repetition of similar trouble on titles of lode mining claims, by the enactment' of a law similar to that in force in British Columbia. Objections have been raised by .representatives of English companies to the investment of large amounts of money in mining operations in the United States, because of the insecurity of title under the 'present apex law; and the statement has been made to me personally by one of the largest English operators, that he would .never again consent to the purchase of mines in the United States, preferring Mexico with all its revolutionary troubles to the danger of encroachment upon his underground rights by an unscrupulous neighbor. Without going into further argument as to the desirability of the I(square location," it should be sufficient to say to those who are inclined to "let well enough alone" and still stick to the "law of the apex" that there have never been any serious objections raised to this feature of the square location in either British Columbia or Mexico. There are well founded and logical reasons for abandoning the doctrine of extra-lateral rights since it is so difficult of interpretation; the most natural substitute being a law similar to that of British Columbia, giving to each locator an area 1,500 ft. square. I would advocate the right to locate adjoining claims of equal extent on either side of the discovery claim, on the strike of the lode, subject to a seasonable requirement in the matter of work upon them; and in the case of a vein dipping flatter than 45' from the horizon, or in case of a

FLOTATION has been so closely allied with the sulfide minerals and their early and associated oily reagents that the term "oil flotation" has erroneously been applied to the entire flotation process. Today, the term "chemical flotation" might be used to advantage. Flotation literature has dealt primarily with the removal of sulfides from non-sulfide gangues, and the separation of one sulfide from another. Now, the application of the process to the separation of nonsulfide minerals is coming to the fore; and from the standpoint of the number of commercial minerals involved, the flotation of nonsulfides offers the larger field. Here, soap or soap-forming substances, such as the fatty acids and their derivatives, are used; hence there may well be a subdivision of the chemical flotation process called "soap flotation." Early experimenters learned that it was easy to form a froth or foam that would carry a part or all of the ore charge over the lip of the flotation machine; but this could not be regarded as flotation because of the lack of selectivity. Doubtless soap was one of the first reagents tried, and doubtless it was rejected on account of its gangue-carrying properties. Now this same gangue-carrying ability makes soap an acceptable reagent, for we are dealing with that, which among sulfides, is considered "gan-gue." As in the flotation of sulfides, so in the flotation of nonsulfides, the selective flocculation of the mineral and the dispersion of the gangue are the first objectives. In fact, these two phenomena epitomize flotation. They depend upon the unlike surface properties of the respective miner-als; and as long as the components of an ore have unlike surface proper-ties, a separation is possible, at least in theory. Often in nonsulfide flotation it makes little difference which mineral floats and which is depressed; generally only a separation is sought.

Fourteen years ago, J. B. Warriner presented before the Institute a paper on anthracite stripping,' describing the progress of stripping in the Anthracite Region from its beginning with an old quarry stripping at Summit Hill, which was operated more than a century ago, through various types of strippings used in 1917. This paper will briefly review the status of anthracite stripping methods from 1917 to the present day and describe in detail the stripping operation of The Hudson Coal CO. at Clinton collicry. It is not intended as a review of the work in the district—that would require a much longer paper. History and Statistics Mr. Warriner said, in part: "The sizes of shovels have gradually increased until now 70 and 80-ton shovels are the rule and larger equipment is coming in." He also referred to a large electrically operated dragline which weighed about 225 tons and had an operating radius of 125 ft. In 1917, a number of strippings used shovels of various sizes, ranging up to the 60 Marion and Bucyrus 70-C railroad type. Material was hauled away in narrow-gage side dumpers, usually of 4 or 5 cu. yd. capacities. Star-type churn drills with 4-in. bits were generally used for drilling purposes. Since 1917 wages in the anthracite field; have increased, but the higher operating costs of strippings are now being successfully combated by continuous improvements in stripping equipment, such as the development of the caterpillar or crawler shovels, the use of larger cars, better drilling equipment, the introduction of shovels of increased capacity and the adoption, in a number of instances, of standard-gage equipment for transportation. In 1918 another large dragline was introduced in the southern fields, which had been in service in the Middle West and is in use today, dipping vertically about 180 ft. to raise coal out of a stripping. About 1918, small shovels with caterpillar traction were introduced. In 1922 the 6-in. well drills began replacing the 4-in. drills, with an attendant saving to the operators. About the same time A. Using an improved maximum bubble pressure technique, the densities of iron silicates at 1400°C have been measured under nitrogen. At the wiistite composition the density has been measured by bubble-blowing experments with both argon and nitrogen and calculated from the measured volume of a known mass of melt under nitrogen. The densities under nitrogen are significantly different from those measured under argon for melts containing less than 28 wt pct SiO2. THE constitution of liquid slags is not well understood, largely because no single property or parameter can be measured which gives conclusive evi- dence of the types and packing of the ions present. Of the many property measurements which can provide information leading to a picture of the constitution of slags, density gives the most direct evidence and has been studied extensively. The work reported here is part of a program of study of densities in multicomponent melts in which the iron oxide-silica system is the solvent. These melts are important as they are fundamental to basic steelmaking, and they allow the study of basic silicate compositions which have hitherto been largely neglected. In the quantitative interpretation of electric log data it is essential to know the formation factor, defined as the ratio of the resistivity of the formation 100 per cent saturated with brine to the resistivity of the brine.' This concept implies that the formation factor for any given rock is constant irrespective of the resistivity of the brine or solution with which it is saturated. It is apparent that this can be true only when the rock matrix is wholly non-conductive. As reservoir rocks may contain clay or shale having an appreciable conductance one may expect these constituents to influence the determination of true formation factor. The formation factor may be theoretically derived from log data by dividing the resistivity of the mud filtrate invaded formation by the resistivity of the mud filtrate. Such a method of calculntion has implicit in it the assumption that the fluids in the invaded formation are wholly replaced by mud filtrate. that the solid matrix is non-conducting, and that the formation factor of the invaded zone is identical with the formation factor of the uninvaded zone. Since the validity of the first two basic assumptions regarding the insulating character of porous matrices and the displacement of the interstitial fluids in porous media do not appear to be fully established, the formation factors of a number of cores and clay slurries have been measured under conditions suitable for verifying the assumptions and the extent of any errors inherent in them. CORE STUDIES Apparatus and Procedure Resistivity measurements were made on short cylindrical permeable cores which had been previously mounted in lucite.2 The cores were clamped by means of insulated bolts between brass plates about 5 cm square and 1 cm in thickness. The plates were provided with a ring seal to prevent leakage between them and the core mount, and had a centrally located orifice so that fluids could be flowed through the mounted core. The brass mounting plates were used as electrodes and any current flow between them necessarily passed only through the constituents of the intervening core. Fluid saturation of the core, and fluid flow through the core, were effected by a centrifugal pump connected to the outflow end of the core, thus providing a differential pressure across the core of approximately one atmosphere. The procedure used was first to evacuate each core by means of the pump and then to saturate the core with an aqueous sodium chloride solution of known resistivity. The resistance of the core was measured and flow of the solution through the core continued for sufficient time to establish a constant resistance reading. After equilibrium had been reached with one solution, another sodium chloride solution of a different resistivity was flowed through the core and the flow continued until a constant resistance reading was again obtained. This procedure was continued until resistance measurements of the core had been made with a series of solutions within a salinity range from 1.0N NaCl to distilled water. The data obtained enabled the apparent formation factor of given porous rocks when saturated with fluids of different resistivity to be computed and also provided information regarding the ability of an invading fluid to displace interstitial water from a core. Results Berea Sandstone — The first core examined was a specimen of Berea sandstone." This core had been cut essentially parallel to the bedding for permeability studies. The core was clamped in the core holder and saturated with 1.0N NaCl solution and the resistance determined. It was subsequently flushed and the resistance measured when saturated in turn with 0.1N, 0.025N, 0.01N, .005N sodium chloride solutions and finally with distilled water. A centennial meeting should be a time to take stock, to evaluate performance, to plan ahead. It is like a line in a televised commercial that goes, "You've come a long way to get where you've got to today." And no less should be said of the mining and energy industries. We have come a long way. A hundred years ago when AIME was founded, this country produced 23 million tons of bituminous coal and 5.2 million bbl of oil. The figures in 1970 were about 580 million tons of coal and 4.1 billion bbl of oil. In spite of such accomplishments, serious and compelling voices are heard in the land - doubting sincerity, questioning corporate structures, and challenging ethics. Those doubts are raised in one part of Washington at the same time that other sections of the Capitol are asking us to produce more energy in order to keep up with population growth, emerging nations, and new technologies. Those of us in the fuel or energy business frequently talk about the race for energy. The question is, can we develop enough energy fast enough to outdistance our present and increasing demands? Recently I heard of an incident that - in an odd way - caused me to think of the energy race. The incident involved a sky-diver who jumped from an airplane without a parachute. He was handed a chute in mid-air by a sky-diving companion. He put it on, opened it, and landed safely. In a way, it seems to me that our society is hurtling through space and that it needs some help from the energy industries to land safely. We're doing our best, but under some rather difficult conditions. Because of illegal strikes and work stoppages the coal parachute is snarled a bit. The cut in percentage depletion and other tax changes have put some holes in the oil parachute. And the gas ´'chute has been in trouble for some time because of unrealistic controls on producer prices. The irony of the situation is that some of the very people who have been taking potshots at the energy parachutes for a long time are the ones who are complaining loudest now because the 'chutes are not functioning the way they could. The safety of the entire nation can depend on the energy industries.

The Parkes process of lead refining is based on the fact that when zinc isemixed with molten lead bullion, it forms an alloy with the silver and gold. This alloy freezes at a higher temperature and is of a lower specific gravity than the lead. With proper regulation of the temperature, the alloy solidifies and floats on top of the lead bath, from which it is removed and the silver, gold, and zinc recovered. The alloy should contain the maximum amount of silver (Ag2Zn,). The usual practice is to make two additions of the zinc. The first addition gives an alloy, or zinc crust, the zinc of which is saturated and is treated for the recovery of its zinc and silver; the crust from the second addition contains an excess of zinc and is used for the first addition on the following kettle. The crust produced depends on a number of items: purity of bullion, temperature, care with which kettle work is performed, addition of zinc, pressure used in expelling lead from crust, etc. It is desirable to make the concentration of silver in the zinc crust as high as possible; otherwise an undue amount of byproducts is produced, which greatly increases the cost of refining. It was formerly considered good practice to make a concentration of 20 :1. That is to say, if the lead bullion assayed 150 oz. dorê per ton, the assay of the retort bullion recovered from the zinc crust should be 3000 oz. per ton. As a matter of fact, the concentration should never, except on bullion assaying over 300 oz., be so low, and with low-grade bullion it should be 50:1. In one lead refinery where, ordinarily, the work was good, on a bullion averaging about 200 oz. per ton, a concentration of 24:1 was common; but how it was obtained was known only to the foremen. Changes occurred, and under new foremen the kettle work fell off badly; the problem then was to bring about this greater concentration. As is customary, the refincry had a "schedule" for its 60-ton kettles, which gave the number of pounds of zinc required for all possible assays, on both the first and the second zincing. The following descriptions and explanations apply specifically to the use of the Hotchkiss Superdip, but there are no apparent reasons why they should not apply to any magnetometer. This paper is a product of work in the practical field for several years with the Hotchkiss magnetometer, mostly on mineral deposits in the southeastern United States. The paper describes the result of an attempt to develop a practical and economical field method that approaches, as nearly as possible, the utmost accuracy of which the magnetometer is capable. As there are many published descriptions of various magnetometers and magnetic methods, it would be superfluous to describe such instruments here, but a limited bibliography on the Hotchkiss and Askania magnetometers is appended. The Hotchkiss and the vertical Askania magnetometers have, respectively, maximum sensitivities of approximately 5 and 30 gamma per instrument scale division. Purpose of New Method The purpose of the method described in the following paragraphs is to eliminate, as far as possible, all corrections of field data that cause complexities and inaccuracies in the results of magnetometer surveys. Magnetometer field observations must be corrected for periodic variations in the intensity of the earth's magnetic field, as well as for temperature variations, both of which take place during the course of a day. These variations do not seriously handicap magnetometer work on highly magnetic deposits, but it is impossible to obtain accurate results, by the conventional methods in use today, over weakly magnetic or diamagnetic deposits. This is due to the physical inability to obtain by such methods sufficiently accurate data in the field to make dependable corrections. The magnitude of the necessary corrections of field observations frequently exceeds the magnitude of local magnetic anomalies obtained over various types of mineral deposits. Therefore if these corrections are neglected or made on the basis of inaccurate data, the entire magnetic picture of the area concerned is at least distorted, and perhaps destroyed altogethcr.

The thermoelectric behavior of the Pt—Pt-Re thermocouple and the resistance of rhenium to attack by certain molten metals is discussed. In addition, data are presented on the stress-rupture behavior of drawn wire, the tensile characteristics of rolled sheet, the variation of Young's modulus with temperature, and the effect of specimen size and fabrication method on the work harden ability. Mechanical properties of thoriated rhenium are discussed. This includes data on the effect of thoria in rhenium on tensile properties, ductility, work hardening, and recrystallization. RECENT work by the authors', has described methods of fabrication and some of the physical and mechanical properties of rhenium. Rhenium was established as a high melting, dense, refractory-type metal with favorable mechanical properties. In addition, Todd and co-workers' and others" have studied such properties of rhenium as the work function, specific heat, and the resistance of rhenium to the water cycle. Revelation of these and other properties has led to serious consideration for application as electrical contacts, high temperature thermocouples, and wear resistant materials. chanical properties reported previously,' several additional examinations have been conducted. The stress-rupture behavior and the Young's modulus of rhenium have been investigated at elevated temperatures. Tensile data have been obtained for rolled sheet, and a study of the relative work hardening characteristics of rod, wire, and sheet has been conducted. Variation of Modulus of Elasticity With Temperature—The Young's modulus of a % in. diam annealed rhenium rod was determined from room temperature to 880"C (1620OF). The rod, approximately 6 in. in length, was activated in a transverse vibration apparatus suspended in a furnace. The resonance frequencies of the rod were measured and used to calculate the moduli values. The driven frequency was 569 cycles per sec, and a protective helium atmosphere was used. The data, plotted in Fig. 1, show that the modulus decreases in an approximately linear manner with temperature over the range tested.

Close examination of most so-called new processes in mineral dressing reveals that they were conceived and developed a long time ago. High-intensity magnetic separation is no exception. Although its application in iron ore beneficiation seems new, in Germany the process has been commercially successful for almost two decades. High-intensity separators have long been standard equipment in the glass sand industry; they have also been used in concentrating some of the more unusual paramagnetic minerals. The basic features of an induced-rotor, high-intensity magnetic separator were described by Désiré Korda in Paris in 1905,1 and many patents have since been issued for improvements on the original design. Fig. 1 shows the basic design of an induced-rotor separator. Several U. S. manufacturers have been supplying induced-rotor separators for many years, but these are all devices of relatively low capacity, not suitable for treating such low-cost commodities as iron ore. On the other hand, two German manufacturers are offering induced-rotor separators of high capacity, both proven in the field.

PUBLIC discussions of mine finance in the tech-nical press have been confined mainly to methods of providing funds for the development of pros-pects or other mining operations which have not reached the stage of productivity. The application of modern financing methods to mines which have behind them a successful record of net earnings has, for some reason, been given scant consideration by mine owners and managers. In a few conspicuous cases, such for example as the Anaconda Copper Mining Co., Chile Copper Co., and one or two others, industrial finance has been applied to mining operations on the scale and after the fashion of other operations. When extensions are needed re-course is usually had, however, to the sale of common stock, with the obvious disadvantage of diluting the holdings of every stockholder of record prior to such financing. In some cases, it has been sought to over-come this disadvantage by issuing stock purchase rights to shareholders of record. If the stockholder is in a position to acquire additional stock, he may then pre-serve his interest intact, otherwise he must suffer a dilution of his holding. If he purchases additional stock he is, from one point of view, paying more for his in-terest than he bargained for when he made his original purchase. In many cases development and equipment are paid for out of surplus or current earnings. It is sometimes most difficult to explain to a manager why he can afford to borrow money when funds are available from a sur-plus account. Nevertheless, industrial enterprises with adequate surplus accounts often finance new construc-tion by the issuance of bonds. Such a procedure enables the company to maintain its surplus intact, and to con-tinue the payment of dividends during a temporary period of unusual expenditures.
