The total production of oil in Kentucky during the year 1943 reached 7,010,776 bbl., which is more than at any time since 1930. Of this total, 5,287,659 bbl. was produced from the counties west of the Cincinnati arch, 692,359 bbl. from the 18 new pools opened during the year, and 3,260,765 from the Smith Mills pool, which was discovered in August of 1942. This is an important increase in western Kentucky in spite of the low price of crude, and demonstrates effectively the desire of the industry to cooperate in meeting the increased demands made by the war. Western Kentucky Two deep tests were drilled in the Kentucky portion of the Mississippi Embayment this year. Both were drilled to test the St. Peter. One well, drilled in Marshall County by the Adams Oil and Gas Co., did not encounter any St. Peter sandstone but drilled 650 ft. of formation below the position of the St. Peter and above the true Knox dolomite. The other well, in Ballard County, was reported to have tested the St. Peter and to have been temporarily abandoned at 3069 ft. At this depth the well probably was stopped in about the same formation as the Marshall County well. No accurate information is available on the Ballard County well. Several new producing areas were added to the list of fields in the western Kentucky coal basin, in Daviess, Henderson, McLean, Ohio, Union and Webster Counties. The Smith Mills pool was enlarged and production was found in the McClosky (Ste. Genevieve) in addition to the Cypress sandstone from which much of the earlier production had been obtained. There was some interest during the year in testing the Devonian and Silurian formations in the area south and east of the western Kentucky coal basin. In the fall of 1943, a 15 to 20-bbl. well was drilled in Allen County and two more wells are now being drilled. The production was obtained from within a few feet of the base of the Chattanooga black shale, probably in the upper Silurian. One well in Simpson County was drilled completely through the Silurian section before it was abandoned. Several wells were drilled in Logan, Todd and Christian Counties to test the Devonian where it is thinned by removal of the upper formations before deposition of the Chattanooga shale. None of these wells was successful but several other locations are now being tested. The Silurian thins in like manner on the eastern flank of the coal basin as the crest of the Cincinnati arch is approached, and it is along this thinning edge that such fields as the LeGrande, Logsdon Valley, Magnolia, Bowling Green and the Barren County pools were developed. A number of wells were drilled around these old pools in an effort to extend them, some of which were successful. The wells listed this year in Larue, Hardin, Barren, Hart and Warren Counties were drilled in the search for other such fields.

A BRIEF history of the growth of the anthracite-coal preparation will give a better view-point from which to judge the present problem of separating slate from coal. At the beginning of the commercial value of anthracite, 70 years ago, only the pure portions, or " splits," of the veins were mined and shipped to market, and without any preparation or screening other than the selection, while loading, of the glassy lumps, and the rejection of the fine material and the slate that had strayed accidentally into the coal. The next step was the crushing or breaking of the coal (hence the name Lt breaker" as applied to the preparation-building), and the sizing of it by means of bars or revolving screens. This stage of its development marked the advent of the "breaker-boy " as a slate-¬picker, with his ever-increasing capriciousness. As the richer veins or ? splits " became exhausted and the market demanded a still greater output, the less-pure " splits " and the thinner veins were utilized to produce the coal. Carrying as they do a far greater percentage of impurities; particularly when removing the pillars, it became necessary to build new and better equipped preparation-plants. Finally, we are now at the highest stage of complication yet known to the art of coal-preparation. We are dealing with varying specific gravities, frictional difference, hardness, structure, and form in the pieces of coal and slate coming from many different veins, and

An experimental study of the movement of markers in the systems Cu/a-brass, Cu/Sna-solid solution, Cu/Ala-solid solution, Cu/Ni, Cu/Au, Ag/Au, employing many types of markers and a variety of temperatures. Marker movement is confirmed and undoubtedly associated with the manner in which atoms move during diffusion. EVERAL years ago Smigelskas and Kirkendall' •S reported measurements on the interdiffusion of copper and a-brass and on the movement of inert markers placed at the original join. These markers were observed to move toward the a-brass side of the join, and from this it was inferred that zinc diffuses in a-brass more rapidly than copper. Similar results were reported a little earlier for the diffusion of solvents into high polymer solids.' This has attracted much attention, particularly from those interested in the mechanism and the theory of diffusion: Seitz3 has employed it in supporting the vacancy theory of diffusion; from the data Darken4 has calculated separate diffusion coefficients for copper and zinc, developing a "phenomenological" theory of diffusion; and Bardeen5 has employed it in constructing a general theory, including therein the work of Seitz and Darken, as has Le Claire. These matters have recently been reconsidered in a sympo~ium.7 Some reason has existed for questioning the work of Smigelskas and Kirkendall.' Their technique consisted in electroplating copper on a-brass, upon the surface of which Mo-wires had been secured, and then diffusing, measuring the extent of diffusion along the normal to the join, and measuring the marker displacement in the same direction by a comparator determination of the distance between Mo-wires on opposite sides of the electroplated brass sample. It has been suspected that the copper plate might have been porous, and that the original interface might have been an imperfect join, both contributing to the transfer of the volatile zinc by vapor transfer;' it has also been questioned whether the marker movement might not in a measure be a property of the marker itself; etc. These legitimate questions require experimental answers; the present paper offers such answers. Moreover, Smigelskas and Kirkendall studied the effect only in the Cu-Zn system and at one temperature; the attention which the work of Smigelskas and Kirkendall has commanded recommends similar

USE of oxygen in metallurgical operations was investigated by a committee of unusually able engineers more than ten years ago. A record of their work appeared under the title "The Use of Oxygen or Oxygenated Air in Metallurgical and Allied Processes," Serial 2502, Report of Investigations, U. S. Bureau of Mines. Shortly thereafter the A.I.M.E. published "Use of Oxygenated Air in Metallurgical Operations," based on a symposium at the New York meeting, February 1, 924. Quoting from the Bureau of Mines report In view of the many recent developments in oxygen manufacture, and considering the increasing cost and decreasing quality of our raw materials, the Bureau of Mines has taken the matter of the application of oxygen or oxygenated air to the metallurgical centers for consideration and has appointed an advisory committee to study the problem.

ALTHOUGH the occurrence of a readily visible tarnish on the stress-corrosion fracture surfaces of titanium alloys tested in oxygenated nitrogen tetrox-ide solutions has been reported,' the possibility that the formation of this tarnish is a requirement for cracking to proceed does not appear to have been considered. It has been proposed that failure occurs in this system as a result of some electrochemical-mechanical process.2 However, recent studies3-6 of the stress-corrosion cracking of a brass in certain ammoniacal solutions, which also cause visible tarnishing, have led to the view that failure occurs by the repeated formation and fracture of a brittle surface film of cuprous oxide. The purpose of this note is to point out the similarities which exist between the tarnish which forms on a brass and that found on titanium alloys failed in nitrogen tetroxide, and to suggest, by analogy, that a similar tarnish-rupture mechanism may be operative in the latter case. The titanium alloy selected for the present study contained 5.2 pct Al, 2.5 pct Sn, 0.025 pct C, 0.16 pct Fe, 0.014 pct N, 0.012 pct H, 0.07 pct 0, and 0.002 pct Mn by weight. Vacuum-annealed alloy strips measuring 4 by 0.25 by 0.04 in. were used to prepare self-stressed test specimens. Each specimen was made from two strips by bending the end portions and spot welding them together to produce curved sections of uniform bending stress. (The exact details of preparing such specimens have been described by Lisagor el al.7) The curvature in the strips determines the ma-magnitude of the outer fiber stress, which in the present specimens was 100,000 psi (yield stress = 120,000 psi). The specimen surface in the spot-welded end regions was shot-peened to induce compressive stresses and thereby eliminate the possibility of stress-corrosion cracking in these regions. The test environment was nitrogen tetroxide, initially containing 99.5 pct N2O4, 0.1 pct H2O, and 0.08 pct C1, through which oxygen had been bubbled for 30 min. During testing the tetroxide was subject to an oxygen pressure of 250 psi. The duration of the test was 96 hr, and during this time stress-corrosion cracks propagated through some 50 pct of the thickness of the specimens. After testing, the tarnish was liberated from the fracture surface by immersion in a methanol-5 pct bromine solution, and then examined by electron dif- fraction and transmission electron microscopy using a JEM-7 electron microscope. The possibility that the bromine solution had affected the structure of the tarnish was investigated by an "in silu" examination of the stress-corrosion fracture surface using a reflection electron diffraction attachment designed for handling bulk specimens. Typical areas of the tarnish liberated by the me-thanol-bromine solution are shown in Fig. 1. Fig. l(a) reveals that the tarnish consists of individual platelets, and from Fig. l(b) it can be seen that the platelets are joined together to form a semicontinuous film, the boundaries of the titanium substrate grains being retained in the tarnish. Electron-diffraction patterns taken from these areas exhibited diffraction spots typical of a monocrystal. The diffraction pattern shown in Fig. 2 was taken from the central area in Fig. l(n). Monocrystal patterns obtained from areas containing numerous individual platelets can only be explained by assuming that their growth is governed by the titanium substrate (i.e., their growth is epitaxial). In other areas, the tarnish had folded over or became mechanically damaged, and these areas gave diffraction patterns consisting of "spotted" rings, enabling interplanar spacings of the tarnish lattice to be determined. ON Saturday evening, Sept. 9, a small party of Institute members, their wives and friends, left New York to attend the Fall Meeting of the Institute at San Francisco. In this party there were: President and Mrs. Arthur S. Dwight; Mr. and Mrs. George D. Barron; Mr. and Mrs. H. J. Stehli; N. S. Spencer and Miss Spencer; the Secretary and Mrs. F. F. Sharpless. They were joined at Chicago by E. F. Eurich, and by Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Baldwin and daughter. Our party was met at Chicago by Mr. and Mrs. L. V. Rice, Mr. and Mrs. A. D. Terrell and W. F. Boericke, who constituted themselves an impromptu entertainment committee and proceeded to carry out a delightful little program. We were taken to the Lake Shore drive, where a stiff wind off the lake refreshed us after a sultry day on the train, and on our return to the city saw Chicago illuminated with all its brilliance of electricity. We were entertained at dinner at the Drake Hotel. In spite of being two hours late getting into Omaha, we were right on the dot at Denver on Tuesday morn-ing. Horace F. Lunt came to the hotel soon after breakfast, and told us that a trip to the mountains had been planned. Having learned the number in the party, he began to gather up his automobiles for a 10 o'clock start.

Evidence has been found for a (010)a?(111)B[102]a /,11[341]/B crystallographic relationship between the monoclinic a and B phases of plutonium during the a?B transformation. The results of an X-ray diffraction study, where [010] fiber textured a samples were used in the absence of suitable single crystals indicate that the (OIO)a planes become (111)B planes upon transformation under near-equilibrium conditions. The transformation strain along the fiber axis, which was the [010] direction, was measured dila-tomekically; the measured 8.5 pct expansion compares favorably with the 8.44 pct expansion in the in-terplanar spacing represented by the (010)a?(111)B relationship. From plots of the atom positions in each of the related planes, a correspondence was deduced between the [102]a, direction and the [341]B direction. Further analysis of the two lattice structures in the light of this relationship revealed a rotation about the [102] direction of 1 deg 43 min and a slight shearing in this same direction of about 30 min. THIS paper discusses the (B crystal structure of plutonium and the orientation relationship existing between the monoclinic a and B phases during the a?ß transformation. The kinetics of the a?ß and (3 — a transformations have received extensive consideration, and because of the crystallographic complexity of these phases, the question of the mechanisms by which these transformations occur is especially intriguing. Nelson and Shyne1 evaluated the existing experimental evidence and concluded, from the indirect evidence available, that both the ß ? a and a ? ß transformations occur by a martensitic process. Their data reveal the anisotropic nature of these transformations which suggests the existence of specific crystallographic relationships between the parent and product phases. In this paper, we are concerned with the confirmation of the existence of such a relationship resulting from the a ? ß transformation and the derivation of the crystallographic details necessary to specify it. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS X-ray diffraction and dilatometric data were obtained from samples of a plutonium having a [010] fiber texture. These cylindrical specimens, approximately 1 cm in diam, were prepared by transforming the ß phase to a under the influence of a uniaxially applied compressive load.' The [0l0] direction is parallel to the direction of applied stress; it is also perpendicular to the (010) planes. This correspondence between the plane normal and the direction having the same indices is, in the monoclinic a plutonium structure, restricted solely to this (010)[010] combination. Such a specimen was mounted in an evacuated, elevated temperature specimen holder on an X-ray dif-fractometer so that the diffracting surface was perpendicular to the fiber axis. The a diffraction pattern, Fig. 1, taken at about 115ºC, revealed the predominance of the (020) reflection. This monoclinic, P 21/rn space group yields no (0k0) reflections when k is odd. The temperature was raised slowly to 160°C to effect the complete transformation to the phase; then it was lowered to 120°C so that a diffraction pattern of the ß could be obtained near the a = ß equilibrium temperature for direct comparison with the a at the same temperature. The (3 diffraction pattern, Fig. 2, obtained under these conditions showed a (222) reflection relatively much more intense than in the random pattern. The other reflections appearing with sig-

The following report on the structure of copper is the result of work done in the laboratory of the Rome Wire Co. early in 1925. Previous work had indicated to the author that excellent results might be expected if a suitable technique in surfacing and etching could be developed. The resources of the Rome Wire Co. enabled this metal to be studied more intensively than previously, although none of the materials were investigated exhaustively. The material presented is hardly more than a preliminary summary of the most obvious character of the metal; a much longer research would have been necessary to solve many of the pressing problems connected with the casting and working of copper. The Rome Wire Co. has generously released the paper; to Dr. E. H. Darby, technical supervisor of the company, are due particular thanks for his appreciation of the importance of metallographic study of copper and for his effective support in the prosecution of the work and in making its publication possible. Dendrites, Cells and Granules The microscope reveals at least three orders of structural units in copper, as in other metals. The largest structural units are the dendrites —spine-shaped crystals building up the masses of metal when it solidifies from a melt or is crystallized from solutions by chemicals or electricity. The nucleus cells, commonly called "grains," are the largest and most conspicuous units of recrystallized solid metal; the limitations of their growth usually confine their sizes to microscopic proportions, although in "single crystals" they may become as large as the piece of metal itself. The granules are the microscopic fine-structural blocks or laminations that build up the nucleus cells; they are revealed when metal is etched with suitable chemicals. The granules are commonly visible at 500 diameters magnification and are plainly visible at 1000 diameters; magnification of the granular surfaces up to 6000 to 9000 diameters shows no finer units, not because of lack of optical resolution but because the chemical attack has left an unfeatured smooth surface.
