An apparatus for the determination of fluid-fluid interfacial tension by the pendant drop method has been constructed. The apparatus is refined beyond those previously described in that the samples are introduced into an evacuated windowed cell without contacting air or mercury. Interfacial tension data are reported for the water-methane system between 74 and 280°F and 15 and 15,000 psi. The variation of wettability of the stainless-steel dropper tip with pressure and temperature was observed incidentally to the measurements. INTRODUCTION The most refined previous apparatus --for the determination of fluid-fluid interfacial tension at reservoir conditions was built by Hauser and Michaels.' These authors used the pendant drop method, previously investigated by Andreas, Hauser, and Tucker.' Recently, Fordham3 has made the pendant drop method an absolute one by numerical integration of the differential equation of drop shape. It is necessary to know the difference in density of the two fluids and the acceleration due to gravity in order to evaluate the interfacial tension from measurements of drop dimensions. Contact angle is not involved in the measurements by this method. Some precise tests of the method have been made at atmospheric pressure and 77°F by Douglas," who found agreement with established values to within about 0.1 per cent for water and air, cyclohexane and air, benzene and air, and benzene and water. No values of interfacial tension from the recent pendant drop apparatusJ have been published by Hauser and Michaels. However, values for the water-benzene and water-decane systems are given in Michaels' thesis5 or Dressures from 15 .to 10,000 psi and temperatures from 73 to 268ºF. Some determinations on gas-oil and gas-water systems in the range of 15 to 4,000 psi and 78 to 178°F have been made by Hozott,' by the drop-volume method. The capillary rise method has been used to investigate the interfacial tension in gas-oil systems at 88°F to several thousand psi by Swartz.7 Other determinations in gas-oil systems at pressures under 1,000 psia have been made by Jones: and Beecher and Parkhurst.9 The scarcity of data for pressures above 5.000 psi is apparent. APPARATUS An assembly drawing of the working section of the interfacial tenqion apparatus is given in Fig. 2. 'The endanant drop (A) is housed in a pressure chamber having glass windows (B). An agitator (6) is provided. The metal parts of the apparatus coming into contact with the sample are made of AISI: Type 316 steel. Drain grooves are provided around the whdows so that the sample in contact with the O-rings is not returned to the working section when the pressure is reduced. A schematic arrangement of the apparatus is given in Fig. 3. The working section containing the pendant drop (A) is filled by samples from bombs (B) with the aid of the vacuum system (C). The O-ring sealed pistons (D) used to separate the sample from the hydraulic fluid are shown together with the pressure production and measurement system (E). A front view of the apparatus is shown in Fig. 1. Most of the hydraulic system is at the top of the panel. The pump and displacement piston are at the lower right. The Variacs for the air bath heaters. the camera. and the vacuum gauge are a1so visible on the panel. The working section together with a window closure and a drop-forming tip closure are shown in Fig. 9. The carbon arc light source with filter is visible in the upper part of the picture. Two sides of the air bath with the impeller and a part of the convection shield can also be seen. The assembled air bath is shown in Fig. 10.

IT IS usually assumed that chemical specifications are sufficient for steel to be used for case carburizing, and if the steel analyzes within the ordinary limits specified for steel for this purpose, no difficulty traceable to the steel used should be encountered in obtaining satisfactory results in the case carburizing and hardening. Much work has been done to determine the effect of various alloying elements on the rate of carbon penetration, etc. but, to our knowledge, little if anything has been published in regard to the effect of the quality of the steel on the final results in the hardening of case-carburized steel parts. The writers believe that the structure of the case both before and after quenching is greatly affected by the actual condition of the steel itself as made, and that for good results in the case-carburizing and hardening departments, the steel should be of the best possible quality as regards non-metallic impurities. It is the purpose of this paper to prove that the presence of excess dissolved oxides in the steel, as made in the melting furnace, affects permanently the results obtained in carburizing and hardening and that it is possible that the presence of dissolved oxide can result in total unfitness of low-carbon steel for, case hardening purposes. When races and rolls for roller bearings are made from a low-carbon steel, case carburized and hardened, it is of primary importance that the results of this treatment be of the highest quality. It is necessary, therefore, that in the case-carburizing work each detail be rigorously checked to avoid any defects which would cause the loss of much time and material. The case carburizing with which this paper deals was done in under-fired oil furnaces. The temperature of each furnace is controlled by means of a platinum platinum-rhodium thermocouple, in connection with a potentiometer indicator and potentiometer recorder. The temperature of each furnace is registered every 15 min. by an operator, who is continually checked by the automatic recorders.

The annual report of the Secretary of the Southern California Local Section for the year ending May, 1919, says that the Section was called upon to give all the assistance possible for the different Liberty Loan drives, for the Red Cross drives and not only in the canvass of our membership, but the canvass of all of the mining companies represented in this city. The committee on the Red Cross drive on which we were represented raised a larger proportion of the total amount than any other in the city. The subscriptions for Liberty Bonds from the members of our' Section that were credited to the Committee of the Joint Technical Societies exceeded in amount the subscription from the members of all the other technical societies combined. Members of our Section slid splendid and efficient work throughout the first half of the year at the Red Cross headquarters in this city, and under the leadership of A. B. W. Hodges and F. B. Close, systematized the work of handling the enormous quantity of material that passed through that organization. Mr. E. A. Montgomery directed the canvass of the mining companies of this city in the bond drives, and the Executive Committee did its part in solicitation among the mining engineers. The Section, together with the local sections of the American Chemical Society, American Institute of Architect, American Institute of Electrical Engineers, American Society of Civil Engineers, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and the local Engineers and Architects Association, forms what is called the Joint Committee of the Technical Societies. of Los Angeles. The honor of having the first president of this combined organization of engineers was given to us with, the election of Mr. Seeley W. Mudd. Upon Mr. Mudd's entering the service, Mr. George A. Daman of the Electrical Engineers was elected to the position and served splendidly during the latter part of the year. It devolves upon this Section to be represented upon this Joint Committee by three members, and it is our duty to supply a speaker once in six weeks to address the engineers in attendance at the weekly luncheon. During the year not a few of the most prominent men of the engineering professions have spoken upon subjects of the greatest interest to us all. Had it not been for the organized team work in the engineering profession available through this Joint Committee, there would have undoubtedly been passed in the recent session of the legislature of this state a bill for licensing and registering all professional engineers in this state, which, in the opinion of your Executive Committee and a large proportion of the membership of this Section, would have fallen far short of either protecting the engineer or protecting the public from impostors. That the public is awakening to the importance of what our National Society represents in the profession of mining engineering can be well inferred from the increasing number of inquiries your Secretary receives regarding the reputation of mining engineers. The necessary qualifications which a membership in the Institute requires and the membership of an engineer in this National Organization is more and more a criterion as to the ability of an engineer who represents himself as such, to the general public.

Chromium alloys were coated with silicon, alumi-nuw, and boron by pack cementation. None of these simple coatings provided adequate nitridation/oxida-tion protection for a Cr -0.17pct Y alloy substrate as shown by a substantial Increase in the ductile -brittle transition temperature after air exposure for 100 hr at 2100°F. Iron-modified silicide coatings afforded good protection, holding the transition temperature of air-exposed specimens to 350° F compared to 200° F for uncoated unexposed specimens and 800°F for un-coated exposed specimens. Additional attractive cant-binations of modi-tying elements included Fe-mo, Fe-Mo-W, Fe-,Mo-W-Ti, and V-Mo-W-Ti. THE desirability of increased operating tempera-tures as a mcans of improving the performance of ad-vanced air breathing engines has resulted in emphasis on the development of materials with high operating temperature capabilities. Chromium, because of its relatively low density (7.19 g per cu cm), high melt-ing point (3410°F), and adequate strength upon alloy-ing, is a candidate material for turbine buckets and stator vanes of advanced air breathing engines. How-even, chromium is not without severe limitations, the major one being susceptibility to nitrogen embrittle-ment upon exposure to air at high temperatures.1,2 For example, a 25-hr air exposure of a Cr-5 pct W* * All compositions in wt pct. alloy at 2100°F produces a 600°F increase in the duc-tile-brittle transition temperature.' Although dilute alloying with such elements as yttrium, lanthanum, arid thorium3,4 or strong nitride formers5 has been shown capable of reducing nitrogen embrittlement, it is apparent that some additional form of surface protection, such as coatings or claddings, will be required for long time service in air breathing engines. Studies of aluiminide6 and silicide7 coatings and of nickel-base claddingsl on chromium alloys to date have suggested that these protection systems are inadequate. Of the aluminidc systems Studied,6 a simple aluminum and an Fe-Al coating on a Cr-5 pct W-0.1 pct Y alloy showed the lowest air exposure weight gains. However, the air exposures raised the ductile-brittle transition temperature of the coated specimens to above 1600°F from an initial level in unexposed specimens of about 500°F. A second in-vestigation for protection of Cr-5 pct W-0.1 pct Y employed gas pressure bonded alloy foils as protective claddings.1 An aluminized Ni-20 pct Cr-20 pct W alloy plus an unalloyed tungsten barrier layer gave the best performance with air exposure lives based on appearance and weight gains of over 600 hr at 2100°F. INVESTIGATIONS on the above topic have recently been published by Shapiro and Kraussl and Jana and wayman in this journal and by Kessler and Pitsch.- Parts of the results in these papers are in good agreement with each other but there are also some results which are substantially different. The main points of these differences shall be briefly discussed in this communication. Shapiro and Krauss' measured single-surface traces of the habit planes of reversed austenite plates formed within the martensite crystals and deduced from these measurements two distinct habit planes A = (0.174; 0.309; 0.935) and B = (0.375; 0.545; 0.749) within 3 deg. Kessler and pitsch4 found instead by two-surface analysis7 one habit plane n = {0.23; 0.62: 0.75) with a real scatter of 6 deg. The latter observation of a single habit plane apart from a certain scatter is in agreement with most of the investigations of martensite transformations. The differences between these two results are so great that they cannot be explained by experimental error. The purpose of this communication is to show that the A- and B-poles of Shapiro and Krauss are due to an erroneous interpretation of a single-surface trace analysis. The difficulties in the interpretation of such single-surface trace analyses are due to the high symmetry of cubic lattices, from which it follows that there are in general twenty-four equivalent possibilities of plotting a single-surface trace in a pole figure. All these possibilities must be taken into account, when putting different traces from different plates together in order to construct the habit plane. Alternatively the poles of all the traces may be plotted in a unit triangle. This is done in Fig. 1 with twenty-nine traces of different reversed austenite plates, all of this were measured by Shapiro and Krauss in the same plane of a single martensite ther traces taken from Fig. 13 in the Shapiro and Krauss paper' which were determined by electron diffraction. The traces in Figs. 1 and 2 have to be compared with the habits A, B, and n which are under discussion. Therefore the great circles of the poles A, B, and n are plotted in Figs. 3, 4, and 5 together with a 3-deg scatter region for poles A, B and a 6-deg scatter region for pole n. THE consumption of sulphuric acid, one of the most important commodities in our modern industrial world, is often used as a barometer for industrial activity. The economics of acid manufacture are largely dependent upon the location of the place of consumption and the availability of raw materials in that locality. Sulphuric acid is made from SO,, oxygen from the air and water. Therefore the sulphur dioxide is the only raw material to be considered in an economic study. SO, can be obtained from almost any material containing inorganic sulphur, such as elemental sulphur, pyrites, coal, sour gas and oil, metallurgical gases, waste gases, or gypsum and anhydrite. Many tons of acid can also be reclaimed by the recovery and concentration of spent acids. The aim of this paper is to present a guide to the economic aspects to be considered when the installation of an acid plant is contemplated. It must be remembered that 1 ton of elemental sulphur produces 3 tons of sulphuric acid and that the shipping of sulphuric acid by tank car is very costly. The size of the plant must also be given careful consideration. For instance, operation of a plant producing 5 tons of acid per day might be warranted in Brazil or Pakistan, whereas economics usually favor buying quantities up to 50 tons per day for use within the United States. Elemental sulphur, when available at the low price of 1M4 per lb delivered at an acid plant, has always been the raw material most frequently used for sulphuric acid. All conditions favor its use at this price. The so-called sulphur shortage has been the subject of so many technical papers, magazine articles, and newspaper items during the past y6ar that it hardly seems necessary to mention it again, but a very brief review of the matter will serve as a foundation for the discussion that follows. There is no shortage of sulphur. Only a shortage of low-cost Frasch-mined brimstone exists today. Other more expensive sulphur-bearing materials are plentiful, both in the United States and abroad. The low cost of Frasch-mined brimstone has discouraged the development of higher cost sources. However, the approaching depletion of Gulf Coast dome deposits and the greatly increased demand for sulphur here and abroad have made it necessary for industry to prepare for conversion to utilize sulphur in other forms. For future planning this situation must be considered permanent and not temporary. This conclusion is based on the fact that although sulphur demand will continue to rise, the production of Frasch-mined sulphur probably will not increase greatly beyond its present level of about 5,000,000 long tons per year. The International Materials Conference in Washington estimates 1952 requirements of the free world at nearly 7 million long tons; and the Defense Production Administration has recently set a new goal for 8,400,000 long tons annual domestic production by 1955. The total sulphur equivalent produced in this country in 1950 was 6 million tons. What, then, are the alternatives for the manufacture of the vital chemical, sulphuric acid? Today about 85 pct of this country's sulphur, and nearly 50 pct of the world supply, comes from our Gulf Coast salt domes and is extracted from the earth by Frasch's hot water process. The Gulf Coast salt dome deposits have been the most important known natural deposits in the world, producing 90 million tons of sulphur during the past 50 years. However, at the present rate of extraction these deposits cannot be expected to last indefinitely. Pyrites Pyrites are, and have been for many years, the source of more than 50 pct of the world's sulphur requirements. The principal use, of course, is in the manufacture of sulphuric acid. The use of pyrites in the United States has diminished greatly because of the availability of low cost native sulphur, but pyrites have continued a major source of sulphur in many other countries. The most available pyrites for use in this country are in the form of lump pyritic ore and in mill tailings from flotation of other minerals such as lead, zinc, copper, gold, and silver. An important factor, when the use of pyrites for acid manufacture is being considered, is the disposal of calcine. A ton of sulphuric acid requires approximately ton of high-grade pyrite and results in 1/2 ton of calcine. If the calcine is a fairly pure oxide, free of harmful impurities, it can be used, after sintering, in an iron blast furnace burden. Its value might be as high as 15d per unit of Fe at the blast furnace; or possibly $10.00 per ton of sinter, if it assays 65 pct Fe. This might result in a credit of $4.00 per ton of acid if the sintering plant and blast furnace are both located adjacent to the acid plant. On the other hand, several factors must be considered before this credit can be realized, i.e., freight to blast furnace, availability of sintering facilities, methods of eliminating impurities, and the removal of valuable metal values. In some locations it would be most economical to dump the calcines.

FOR twelve successive years Canada's mineral production has shown a steady increase, rising from a value of $0.5 billion in 1945 to $2.06 billion in 1956, and the outlook for the future is one of continued growth. A great deal of credit for this growth must go to Canada's tax policies, which recognize that mines are difficult and costly to find, and that once found, they are a wasting asset. These tax policies take form under the Income Tax Act, which provides a tax- free period of three years on initial production for new mines and, after that period is over, allows all proper expenses of operation to be deducted from mine revenue. These allowable expenses include write-off of plant and pre-production development expenditures. From the resulting profit figure after this procedure, a further deduction of one-third is allowed for depletion before net taxable income is arrived at. Tax rates of 20 pct on the first $20,000 and 47 pct on the excess are then applicable to the net taxable income.

SLIP, twinning, stacking faults, and precipitates on well-defined planes in a crystal produce traces that are visible on either a polished or an etched surface. The purpose of this note is to establish the usefulness and limitations of the information obtained from such traces when determining the orientation of single crystals or grains in a polycrystal. Attention will be confined specifically to traces produced by octahedral planes in cubic crystals, though most of the remarks can be taken as more generally valid. The problem of determining the crystal orientation is completely solved in principle' and in particular for the special case under consideration.1'2 Tables are available3 in which the orientations can simply be looked up when given the two or three angles between the traces. Thus a quick and simple method is available for obtaining the orientation of a crystal from surface traces. In this note two examples will be given from recently published papers and will show the use of the method with the aid of the Tables, as well as some of the precautions that should be taken in the procedure. As part of an analysis of X-ray Kossel lines, Peters and Ogilvie 4 determined from them the crystallographic orientation of the specimen. They chose a Cu-5.10 wt pct Si alloy that had been partly transformed from the a (fee) phase to the k (hcp) phase. The latter formed as very straight platelets along the octahedral planes of the a phase, and a photograph (Fig. 7 of Ref. 4) was reproduced in the paper4 of the region for which the orientation had been determined from the Kossel lines. Apart from a very small area (about 0.15 mm diam) near the top center of the photograph, the region shown was clearly all of one orientation. Traces in four different directions were readily identified. Starting with the smallest angle and proceeding counterclockwise, the angles between the traces were measured to be 27° 43', 55° 16', 64 3 43 1, and32"26'. These add up to 1802 08 1, indicating a cumulative error of 8'. The correct values should, of course, be taken from the original glass plates, or at least from prints on distortion-free paper, so the precision of the quoted values is actually greater than their accuracy. The solutions can be looked up in the Tables3 in four ways, depending on how the angles are paired, tion for the minutes of arc is required and the solution obtained will be identical for all the four pairs if the values of the angles are not in error. In a practical situation, such as this one, there are several sources of error, so that the four solutions obtained will all be slightly different. An arithmetic average of the four solutions is mathematically incorrect, but may, in special cases, give an answer close to the correct one. A rigorous procedure for refining the orientation has been described by Mackenzie;5 he gives a least-squares method that can be applied, if necessary, to this type of problem. The orientation thus determined can be compared with the one from the Kosel lines and discrepancies larger than the experimental error assigned to nonor thogonality of the X-ray or electron beam to the specimen. Here the example will only be used to illustrate the general procedure for making a very rapid rough check. From measurements on the stereographic projection, Fig. 9 of the paper,4 we can determine that the surface normal is approximately (0.434, 0.704, 0.562). From the Tables3 we find, using 28°, 55" as a good approximation to the first pair (27°43', 55°16'), that the surface normal is (0.453, 0.678, 0.579).* These two values are within 2 deg of each

On Monday evening, Oct. 28, 1912, the visiting members and guests were informally received by the Local Committee at the Headquarters of the Institute at. the Hotel Statler. The evening was very pleasantly spent in renewing old acquaintances and friendships and in forming new ones. The first session, held Tuesday morning, Oct. 29, 1912, in the impressive Assembly-Room of the hotel, was called to order by David T. Croxton, Chairman of the Local Committee. Mr. Croxton introduced the Hon. Newton D. Baker, Mayor of Cleveland, who extended a cordial welcome to the members and guests present. James F. Kemp, President of the Institute, who subsequently presided at the meeting, responded in behalf of the Institute.

SILICA brick are indispensable in the manufacture of steel because they alone are able to withstand the high temperature of regenerative furnaces. All attempts to replace silica brick by other refractory materials for this purpose have failed, but the reason for this failure has remained obscure; we shall give an explanation later in this paper. Before the war, silica brick employed in France came principally from abroad, for which reason, since the beginning of hostilities, certain French steel works have been seriously handicapped. Our attention was first directed to the question by M. Bred, Engineer of the Teil Works. With him, we began certain investigations, at first using our laboratory and the furnaces of neighboring steel works. The larger part of our experiments, however, have been made in the laboratory of the Faculty of Sciences at the Sorbonne. For the heating of our samples, we are deeply obliged to MM. Charpy, Yeatmann and Guérineau. In undertaking these studies, our first aim has been to render assistance to French industry, by indicating, as precisely as possible, the necessary conditions for the manufacture of high-grade brick; but at the same time we have intended to give an example of the manner in which scientific methods may be put to practical application in the solution of industrial problems. Although our work has been confined to samples of only a few grams, we are nevertheless convinced that our information can be directly utilized by brick-works of which the output is measured in thousands of tons

(Pittsburg Meeting. March, 1010.) GENERALLY speaking, the practical study of combustion has been made mainly from the stand-point of the steam engineer. This. narrow view-point has left open a large field for scientific research on the application of combustion in other arts, where the conditions of heat-utilization are widely different from those presented in the steam-generator. The great economic importance of the boiler and the ease of measuring its performance, together with the comparative uniformity of conditions in the steam-generator, is, probably, quite largely responsible for the practical neglect of the study of the use of fuels in other arts save only on the basis of their thermal value. Yet these other arts show quite plainly that a thermal-value basis alone is Dot sufficient. For example, in burning lime, under ordinary conditions of firing, a cord of wood will do as much work as a ton of coal, though the latter affords more than twice the number of heat-units. Similar results are evidenced in burning brick, in the roasting of certain ores, in reheating billets, and in many other arts where heat is to be applied over extended areas to fragmental masses of more or less refractory materials. In these arts much is to be gained by a careful study of the application of the heating-agent in the form of the long flame, and in the production of the heat in contact with, or in direct proximity to, the object to be heated. Of necessity, in boiler-practice, combustion cannot be maintained in actual contact with, or in close proximity to, the object to be heated. Speaking in a general way, heat is imparted from burning bodies to things to be heated in two ways : directly, by radiation, and indirectly, by transfer of the sensible heat of hot gases by convection or contact; by conduction from the hot uses. Some of the problems associated with the acid treatment of oil wells are related to the control of the composition of formation treating acid. One test usually made at the well site is the determination of the acid concentration. Heretofore, the concentration of the acid delivered to the well site usually has been interpreted from a hydrometer measurement of the specific gravity of the acid solution. Experience has shown that this indirect measurement of acid concentration can give erroneous results. More reliable results are, of course, obtainable by the titration method; however, this method is not easily adapted to well-site testing. To overcome these objections, a device was developed for use in the field which permits determination of the concentration of treating acid both quickly and accurately at the time of the acid treatment. Its purpose was three-fold, namely, to determine: (1) the concentration of the fresh treating acid, (2) the concentration of the spent acid returning from the well, and (3) the solubility of formation samples in treating acid. The device was designed to operate on the principle of the stoichiometric relation between the calcium carbonate—hydrochloric acid reaction and the carbon dioxide gas resulting from the reaction. By confining the carbon dioxide gas within a reaction cell of the type shown in Fig. 1, the pressure inside the cell is increased. Since the pressure is an indication of the quantity of carbon dioxide gas produced, it may be used to estimate the concentration of the acid, provided an excess of calcium carbonate is used. From information on the volume of the reaction cell, the volume of acid used, and the pressure and temperature of the gas after the completion of the reaction, the concentration of the treating acid may be computed. The reaction cell is essentially a pressure vessel equipped with a pressure gage, temperature indicator. pressure release valve, and a special sample holder. Plastic and metal construction makes the cell both rugged and acid-resistant. The sample holder is so designed that a sample of calcium carbonate (or sample of carbonate rock) can be dropped into the acid

THE influence of austenite grain size upon the hardenability of steel is now fairly well understood; for a given austenite, increasing the grain size increases the depth of hardening, and, since the latter is related to the fundamental transformation behavior of austenite, it follows that austenite decomposition must, in general, be retarded by increasing grain size. To date, very little quantitative information bearing directly on the effect of austenite grain size upon the progress and result of isothermal transformation has been published. Davenport and Bain,1 and Zimmerman, Aborn and Bain2 have shown that the transformation is definitely retarded in hypereutectoid plain carbon steels at temperatures near and above the upper region of rapid transformation (Ar') when the austenite grains are increased in size. More recently, Griffiths, Pfeil and Allen3 investigated the effect of a series of different heating (austenitizing) temperatures upon the progress of isothermal transformation at 1245°F. (675°C.) and 745°F. (395°C.) in a medium carbon, low-alloy steel; while they reported no measurements of the austenite grain size, their results suggest that increase in grain size retards austenite transformation at 1245°F. (675°C.), but has no appreciable effect at 745°F (395°C.). The present paper deals with the results of a study of the isothermal transformation of austenite in a single commercial alloy steel in which a fine-grained or a coarse-grained state was induced by appropriate selection of austenitizing temperature. The data are presented in the form of isothermal transformation diagrams, which clearly show that coarsening the grains lessens the rate of transformation of austenite to proeutectoid ferrite and pearlite-that is, at temperature levels above about 1000°F. (540°C.)-but is without significant effect at lower temperatures where the transformation product is bainite or martensite. It is to be presumed that the foregoing statement would be valid, at least in principle, for many other grades of steel; it confirms again that the mechanism of transformation to a pearlitic structure is fundamentally different from that to an acicular structure. A number of related observations were made, which seem to throw some light on the transformation process as it takes place in alloy steels, particularly at temperature levels in the vicinity of 1000°F. (540°C.), where the transition from lamellar to acicular structures occurs. These data are discussed briefly in the belief that they may lead to a clearer understanding of this aspect of the subject. MATERIAL AND EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The material investigated was a commercial grade of S.A.E. 4140 steel, the composition of which was as follows: 0.37 per cent C, 0.77 per cent Mn, 0.98 per cent Cr and 0.21 per cent M0. It was hot-rolled to a 1 1/8-in. round bar and normalized by air-cooling from 1800°F. (980°C.).
