This report describes the design and initial operation of a slagging gasification pilot plant installed by the Bureau of Mines at the Lignite Research Laboratory, Grand Forks, N. Dak., in 1958-59. The tests covered in this report were conducted over a period of about 2 years, beginning in April 1959. The pilot plant was designed for eventual operation at pressures ranging from 400 to 600 p.s.i.g. (pounds per square inch gage); however, for the preliminary test reported here, the gasifier was fitted with a low-pressure slagging section and operated at atmospheric pressure and at 80 p.s.i.g. The reason for using a low-pressure slagging section for initial operation was to facilitate modifications in design during the development of a reliable slagging procedure.

Radon progeny have been a health and safety concern for miners since the mining of radioactive minerals began. Through the ?nuclear age?, it has become better understood and the regulations have become more robust. Ventilation and control practices have improved, thus reducing miners? exposures. This paper provides an overview of radon in mining, the progress of the regulations, and discusses some of the uranium miner studies that contributed to the knowledge of the pathology of radon.

Filtration is the operation of liquid solid separation commonly applied in the mining industry. The use of filtering chemical agents is a technical solution viable for filtering optimization. The present work proposed to evaluate two filtering chemical agents (surfactants) to reduce the final moisture content of iron ore concentrate from Ferrous Resources. The leaf test top feed was done with the FLOTICOR FA 7241 and FLOTICOR FA 16557 products. The foaming profile of the filtrate was also evaluated, once excessive foaming is undesired when using this kind of products. The results showed a reduction in the final moisture of the filter cake. The product FLOTICOR FA 16557 achieved the best results, reducing final cake moisture from 10.4% to 9.8% at the dosagem of 25 g/t, besides presenting a fast kinetics in the foam drainage, presenting itself as a technical alternative for filtration optimization.

"Geo5 Software is gaining popularity worldwide due to its expediency in analysis and design of pile foundation. The analysis is based on various theoretical, empirical and semi-empirical methods available in existing literature and various country standards. Moreover, the ultimate resistance of pile in the software is based CSN 73 1002, Fellenius method, NAVFAC DM 7.2 and Tomlinson method. Due to the specificity in calculation of ultimate resistance, it becomes necessary to validate the results arrived using the software for better accuracy. Furthermore, the above-mentioned methods are not necessarily popular in every design offices. Therefore, an attempt has been made to predict the efficiency of Geo5-v15 software to analyze the pile foundation by comparing it with the results obtained using the analysis based on Indian Standard IS 2911:2010, performed with spreadsheet specifically designed for the same purpose. The accompanying outcome of the comparison and several shortcomings found in the design part associated with the software has been highlighted in the later part of the paper. Besides, the optimization tool present in the software is also described for the more efficient and economic design of pile foundation, hence contributing as practical aid to structural engineers.INTRODUCTIONThe analysis of individual pile foundation and pile in groups can be said to include the three main important parameters – Ultimate bearing capacity, Settlement and Structural Design. The first two parameters are to be evaluated to check the reliability of foundation against ultimate limit state and serviceability limit state. The third parameter includes the analysis of pile against both horizontal and vertical load. This parameter mainly intends to evaluate the size of foundation and the amount of reinforcement. Geo5 is a software which can expediently compute the above mentioned three parameters just by the mere input of the necessary factors. The ultimate bearing capacity analysis in Geo5 is based on various theoretical, empirical and semi-empirical methods available in existing literature and various country standards depending upon the drained and undrained condition of soil (Bowles, 1968; CSN 73 1002,1987; Felenius,1991; NAVFAC DM 7.2,1984; Tomlinson,1977). However, the method mentioned in IS 2911 (2010) is not the same and have slight variations in way of evaluating the parameters which affect ultimate bearing capacity. Therefore, it becomes necessary to evaluate the efficiency of Geo5 with respect to the value of ultimate bearing capacity and therefore, asserting the confidence in the software based method for the convenience of the designs in Indian Scenario. The present study aims to evaluate the efficiency of Geo5 v-15 software in predicting the ultimate bearing capacity of pile foundation. The results of the software are compared with the bearing capacity calculated using IS 2911 (2010) with the help of excel sheet. Moreover, as the software is frequently put under revision, therefore a comparison of this version has also been made with the latest version of Geo5 (2017) to check whether the latest revision has accounted for the discovered shortcomings. The design steps performed in the software is also shown. As Geo5 make use of IS 456 (2000) for the design purpose, hence it can be considered as reliable with respect to the estimate of the third parameter. Furthermore, the optimization process is also shown in the later part of the paper to emphasize the simplicity of the software in economizing the design cost."

IN a concern with the varied interests of the Western Union Telegraph Co., where practically all types of metals, both ferrous and nonferrous, are utilized, many types of failures of materials occur. These have to do not only with outside plant construction, such as corrosion and fatigue of line wire and cable, but also with inside plant equipment operating at such high speeds that rapid deterioration of metal. parts due to fatigue and wear results. Both corrosion and fatigue affect the life of copper wire so its normal life in any particular locality is largely dependent on the atmospheric conditions. Tensions vary widely owing to changes in temperature and ice and wind loadings and the wire is Subject to a great range of vibration caused by wind gusts aril vibration front trains or other heavy vehicles transmitted through the earth. High frequency low-amplitude vibrations are sometimes audible as singing in the wire. The other extreme is the vertical slashing or dancing of the wire observed during severe storms where amplitudes of 9, ft. or more at low frequencies have been observed.

Aurum Reef Resources is a provincially owned unlisted public company which holds a number of prospecting licences over Otago hard rock historically active minesites. The Bullendale Licence 31 1845 was applied for in 1985, granted 1991, including a DoC special condition allowing re-opening of the historic workings. The underground workings were commenced in 1862 and up to the mine's closure in 1906 some 40 000 ounces were produced at an average grade of 15.5 g Au/t. The purpose of the summer 1991 work programme was to enter the workings in an attempt to observe and sample the mullock between the lodes operated by the early miners. This objective was achieved on the third attempt. Samples were taken and subsequently a contract geologist resampled the workings and prepared a report indicating the Bullendale lode zone to be generally mineralised. Mullock interlode and schist foot-wall consistently returned assays over 0.5 g/t.

This three volume final report summarizes the activities and conclusions of this contract. The objective of the contract was to develop noise control modifications on a retrofit basis, for auger miner coal-cutting systems. Manuals were prepared to assist mine shop personnel in retrofitting the auger miner with these noise controls. Final Report Volume I - Details all vibration and acoustical tests conducted in development of the noise controls. Final Report Volume II - Noise Control Modification Manual for the Jeffrey 100-L Auger Miner describes the various noise control modifications to the auger miner, along with fabrication procedures, cost and vendor information. The increased obsolescence rate of electronic products has made it evermore pertinent to understand the potential environmental impact of materials choices to help guide electronic waste (e-waste) management and promote awareness of high burden materials. Methods for screening for the performance of materials and their potential burden on human health and the environment can be used to comparatively select constituents of present and prospective electronic products. These methods should be able to yield more robust information when linked to other decision-making strategies where integrated data on consumer preferences, production quantities, and regulatory initiatives are sparse or unavailable. A framework is presented here for generating metrics of ecological toxicity, human health toxicity (cancer and non-cancer categories) and global resource consumption for evaluating environmental impact of materials (specifically metals) in electronic products. "Darcy’s law has been used extensively to model cake filtration. It is a macroscopic model, in which particle size dominates the kinetics and cake moisture. In the present work, a capillary flow model has been developed from first principles to study the effects of microscopic parameters such as capillary radius, boundary layer slip, disjoining pressure, and surface tension that may be important for dewatering ultrafine particles. Laboratory-scale pressure filtration tests show that dewatering kinetics is strongly dependent on capillary radius, which in turn is influenced by surface hydrophobicity, surface charge, and length scales of particles. The model parameters determined from laboratory-scale filtration tests show that use of a hydrophobizing reagent can greatly improve fine particle filtration due to increased slip and decreased capillary pressure. The kinetics of dewatering kaolin clay is fastest at a pH where the layer-structured particles coagulate with a face-to-edge orientation. The capillary flow model developed in the present work may be useful for designing filters and optimizing operating conditions.INTRODUCTIONIn 2014, Canada produced 2.2 million barrels per day of crude oil from the oil sands resources in Alberta, which is expected to grow to 3.2–4.0 million barrels per day by 2030 (CAPP, 2013). One of the challenges to meeting these projections is the tailings management. At present, the industry uses ?77 km2 of the lands to construct tailings ponds. Significant amounts of the tailings disposed to the ponds are silts and clays that are slow to settle and consolidate, creating problems for reclamation. It is, therefore, the objective of the present work to develop a filtration model that may be useful for developing advanced dewatering technologies that can address the tailings management issues.Darcy’s equation is the governing law for filtration. It was derived as an empirical model by H. Darcy in 1856 while he was studying fluid flow in sand filters (Hall, 1956). Since then, many investigators derived it from first principles. It relates superficial fluid velocity to the pressure drop across a porous medium of known permeability. In filtration, the latter can be related empirically to particle size using the Kozney equation (Yoon, 2005)."

This work presents the findings from a number of NIOSH studies evaluating the impacts of emerging technologies that may reduce dust exposures for continuous mining and roof bolting personnel. These technologies include use of a wet head cutting drum on a continuous mining machine that places water sprays on the cutting drum instead of placing them on a manifold outby the drum. Evaluations at two separate operations showed that the use of the wet head sprays reduced dust levels at the miner operator in the return air, although these reductions were quite variable. NIOSH also assessed the effectiveness of a canopy air curtain for protecting roof bolting personnel. The data showed that dust levels were lower beneath the air curtain than outside the air curtain. This study also suggested several future modifications to the air curtain to in-crease its effectiveness. Finally, NIOSH evaluated mist drilling technology for its effectiveness in controlling respirable dust exposures of bolting personnel. A recent study showed that higher dust levels existed around a machine using the mist system compared to a machine using a conventional vacuum system for dust control. Unfortunately, the true impact of mist drilling was confounded by this machine operating downwind of the continuous miner for much of the study.

This publication presents a study by the Federal Bureau of Mines of 494 accidents in open-pit iron-ore mines, beneficiation plants, and shops of the Lake Superior district from March 1949 to June 1956. These accidents caused 499 lost-time injuries, including 12 fatalities. A similar Bureau publication, Information Circular 7744, Analysis of 346 Accidents, Underground Iron-Ore Mines, Lake Superior District, was published in April 1956. Accident reports were analyzed by the Bureau to show the causes of in-juries and the unsafe practices or conditions that caused the accidents. Also shown are the time charges, times of occurrence, ages of the injured by job classification, and experience of the injured in mines and on the job being performed when hurt. Detailed information is presented on approximately 27 percent of the total number of disabling accidents that occurred in open-pit iron-ore mines, beneficiation plants, and shops in the district during the period covered. The text also contains tabulations of the accident experience and graphs with straight-line injury-frequency, injury-severity, and fatality trends for the period 1946-57.

"Parameters f or design and development of an emergency hoist system (Fig. I) were submitted to Timberland Equipment Limited of Woodstock, Ontario by the Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan Mining Limited.The unit is the first of its kind in Canada. Not only does it comply with the province of Saskatchewan's mining regulations, but has the added advantage of being completely mobile and self-contained.As well as being useful in the mining industry, the mobile hoist unit could be used in other emergency situations such as rescuing people trapped in wells.JustificationRevisions to the Mines Regulations under Section 13 of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, 1977, of the Province of Saskatchewan stipulate as follows:"" Section 410 .04(4) The Mine Employer shall make adequate provision at every mine where any worker is hoisted in a shaft not equipped with a manway to enable an y such worker trapped in a conveyance in the shaft to be rescued . "" It was not possible to equip the shafts at PCS Mining' s Divisions with "" manways"" and therefore an alternative was required.BackgroundThe Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan Mining Limited, a subsidiary of the Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan, operates four potash mines. Of these, three, Cory, Rocanville and Lanigan Divisions are wholly owned while the fourth, Allan Division, is 40% owned by Kidd Creek Mines Ltd., but managed by PCS Mining. The four underground operations all have a service and production shaft.From 1979 to 1981 the PCS Mining Division, along with Central Canada Potash, were developing an idea to use the existing ground-mounted timberland hoist at Lanigan as an emergency hoist. This hoist was used in the past for rope-up work at both Rocanville and Lanigan and other potash mine s. The Department of Labour at this time had concerns about the time it would take to load, t ran sport and re-install the hoist on a foundation when needed for an emergency. Weight and size made this particular unit very cumbersome for transporting.In addition, the speed at which this hoist operates is too slow for rescue work. When the Department of Labour expressed concern that this unit would be unsuitable for these rea sons, a search for a suitable unit was initiated.The project responsibility for procuring an emergency hoist for the Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan Mining Limited was assigned to the author, a shaft/ hoist specialist a t PCS Mining."

The Brunswick plant is located in Costerfield, approximately 40km east of Bendigo in central Victoria. Crushing, grinding, gravity gold concentration and flotation methods are used to produce a saleable gold concentrate and an antimony-gold flotation concentrate. This paper discusses the improvements made within the processing plant which have resulted in a 99% increase in throughput over nameplate capacity of 6 250 average tonnes per month to 12 445 average tonnes per month and increases of 12% gold (from 2007 average of 78% to 2014 average of 90%) and 16% antimony recovery (from 2007 average of 79% to 2015 average of 95%). "A hydrocyclone with two vortex finders, named the three-product cyclone (3PC), has been successfully tested in the Platinum industry for dealing with the dense Chromite found in UG2 ores. This dense component preferentially reports to the cyclone underflow, resulting in an over-ground fine Chromite component in the final product. The dense media effect caused by a high concentration of this in the cyclone feed produces a coarsening of the cyclone overflow, which results in loss of recovery through over-size silica in the PGM carrying component material in the float feed. The fine barren particles of Chromite that report to the overflow are recovered through entrainment in the flotation process, resulting in detrimental contamination of the slag produced from the concentrate.Data from many industrial scale tests of the 3PC have shown that three distinct products are obtained when the inner vortex finder length (LIVF) is extended to the region either above (normal classification) or below (reverse classification) the transition zone (a region were the inner and outer overflow streams are identical). Due to wear problems arising from extending the IVF deep into the cone of the cyclone, it is advantageous to use the shorter IVF. Only the normal classification results are reported here, but similar outcomes (to opposite overflow streams) were obtained for the reverse classification. The results showed notable differences in the percentage split of the plus 100µm material in the product streams, confirming that three distinct products are discharged from the 3PC. About 12% of the plus 100µm material in the feed reports to the middlings stream, 1% reports to the final product, and the remainder to the cyclone underflow.Results of silica and chrome splits to the three distinct products namely, the inner overflow (INO), the outer overflow (OUO) and the underflow (U/F) are given in Table 1. These show that the 3PC can be used to recover coarse silica through screening the middlings product - which has a high silica content. When the vortex finder ratios (ratio’s of cross-sectional areas) are carefully selected, the split of plus 100µm silica to the middlings product ranged from 2.9 to 9.6%. Large amounts of oversize silica and chrome report to cyclone underflow, explaining their high percentages in the underflow stream."

Lacy copper has been an on-going concern at Atlantic Copper for at least 10 years and was first reported to Glencore Technology in mid-2010. Over the past 12 years, many of the plates were replaced due to age and general deterioration however; plate passivation and lacy copper issues have persisted. After analyzing all the possible causes of this phenomena, it was found that the problem is caused by a degradation of stainless steel as a consequence of the deposition of Sb oxides. These deposits act as passivating agents of stainless steel, which reduces the density of copper nuclei, causing defective copper deposit, with low thickness and ductility. After doing several tests for reducing/removing the phenomena, the over-riding factor was found to be the anode-cathode overlap. An adequate overlap eliminates the problem of "lacy copper". This was verified during an eight month trial with anodes extended 2.5cm in length. Longer anode not only avoids the appearance of lacy copper, but also recovers cathodes that already have lacy copper. On the other hand polishing of plates only gives rise to a temporary solution that requires on-going polishing, to avoid the re-appearance of lacy copper. INTRODUCTION The electrolytic copper refinery of Atlantic Copper in Huelva (Spain) was commissioned in 1970 with an initial capacity of 40,000 t of cathodes per year. In 1975 the copper refinery was expanded to 108,000 t/year. From 1994 to 1996, a new expansion together with the implementation of ISA permanent cathode technology led to a capacity of 215,000 t/y. Since 1995, a progressive increase in the current density up to 350 A/m2 has been accomplished, which together with an increase in the number of cells from 1,120 to 1,204, has led to the present cathode production capacity of 290,000 t/y A lack of copper deposition in the lower part of the steel permanent cathodes was first reported in 2010. This phenomenon is known as “Lacy copper” because of the appearance of the copper deposit as it can be seen in Figure 1. The occurrence of this phenomena was relatively low and was assumed to be originated by an excessive anode scrapping. Nevertheless, in December 2015 Lacy Copper was observed in a significant amount of copper cathodes giving rise to the following issues: Increased tramp copper – housekeeping and maintenance problems Poor appearance of cathode deposit and untidy looking bundles

Preliminary recommendations for the Upper Northwest Interceptor 1&2 specified installation of reinforced concrete pipe using pipe-jacking methods. However, a larger one-pass tunnel constructed using precast segmental lining would provide additional storage volume. The risk of encountering unexpected conditions or events and the resulting cost impacts could differ significantly for these two options. A probabilistic life-cycle cost analysis of these alternatives was performed. This paper discusses the construction alternatives considered, the risk assessment methodology used to evaluate these alternatives, the input parameters and risk factors used in this analysis, and the recommended project which is currently being constructed.

INTRODUCTION This paper is the outgrowth of work done by the authors to prepare the seismic design criteria for underground structures on the Southern California Rapid Transit District (SCRTD) Metro Rail Project. It is a follow-on to a similar paper presented at the October, 1984, ASCE National Convention (17). For design, the earthquake-induced distortions recommended herein are to be added to the normal static loading conditions for the underground structure. This design approach has been used by 18 section designers on the SCRTD Project. Preliminary results from two- and three-dimensional finite element solutions have partially verified the approach. Areas where additional research is needed for special cases are identified. EFFECTS OF EARTHQUAKE The effects of earthquakes on underground structures may be broadly grouped into two general classes -shaking and faulting. In response to earthquake motion of bedrock (shaking) , the soil transmits energy by waves. Seismologists identify various types of earthquake waves, but underground engineers are generally interested in the effects of transverse shear waves which produce a displacement of the ground transverse to the axis of wave propagation. Mining One (M1) is often challenged with the task of evaluating deposits considering open cut and/or underground (UG) mining methods. In many near surface deposits a combination of both methods results in the optimum economic means of exploitation. As common as it is to have open pit mines eventually develop into underground mines, theory associated with determining the optimum underground/open pit interface location continues to be subject to refinement. With recent developments in underground software packages, the generation of rudimentary underground mining stopes from basic economic inputs is not only fast, it provides a practical underground mining solution. The determination of the open pit/underground interface is not new to Gemcom's Whittle 4X (Whittle). However, its solution has only ever claimed to be indicative, mainly due the rudimentary nature of how Whittle represents any potential underground mining. The efficient generation of the aforementioned underground mining solution has provided mining engineers with a unique opportunity. Underground mining can now be represented within the Whittle environment to allow the open pit/underground mining scenario to be modelled with increased accuracy. Providing Whittle with the ability to now consider mineable underground stopes combined with the consideration of time value of money (discounting), has delivered a solution with higher credibility than ever before.This paper will elaborate on the potential value gains associated with improved accuracies in the modelling of any potential underground mining in the Whittle environment. Furthermore, it will explain the importance of incorporating time value of money in the optimisation process to provide a consistent solution through to pit selection and final analysis.

Catalyzed diesel particulate filters (CDPF's) reduce the concentration of diesel particulate matter (DPM) and may reduce the emissions of carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrocarbons (HC) in diesel exhaust. Asamera Minerals' Cannon Mine first installed CDPF's in 1987, and currently has 12 diesel- powered vehicles equipped with CDPF's. The Cannon Mine and the U.S. Bureau of Mines collaborated to evaluate the durability and performance of a CDPF. One of the CDPF's used at the mine was periodically evaluated in the USBM's diesel emissions laboratory after 839, 1,584, and 2,881 h of in-mine service. The objectives of this report are to present results from the USBM's evaluation of this CDPF, to describe the Cannon Mine's experience and cost analysis of using CDPF's, and to make recommendations for the future use of CDPF's. CDPF's improve air quality at the Cannon Mine, but they frequently become plugged and are subject to excessive mechanical shocks and stress, shortening their useful life. Mine records indicate that CDPF's account for 0.8 to 4.9 pct of the vehicles' operating cost at the mine. CDPF life to date has ranged from 1,671 h to more than 5,992 h. Laboratory tests of the CDPF determined that DPM removal efficiency decreased and regeneration temperature increased over time.

"BHP-Billiton’s Cannington mine in Northwest Queensland produces a silver-rich lead concentrate and a zinc concentrate. The plant has the capacity to treat 3.1 mta and for the year to June 2006 mean feed grade was 10.3% Pb, 461 g/t Ag and 3.7% Zn. Recovery losses of lead and silver are primarily in the fine fractions. In 2001, the plant was modified when it was determined that splitting the lead feed into two size fractions, and floating the two fractions separately increased fine lead and silver recovery. The fine lead fraction (called the split float) is 80% <16µm and about a quarter of the lead and silver is in the finest fractions. In 2006 to further improve lead and silver recovery a statistical plant trial of magnetic aggregation conditioning of the split float feed was undertaken. While pure galena is diamagnetic the Cannington galena contains iron within the galena mineral resulting in the galena having a paramagnetic, magnetic susceptibility. The trial demonstrated to greater than 98% statistical significance an increase in lead recovery, and to 99% statistical significance an increase in silver recovery, and to greater than 97% significance an increase in the lead in concentrate in the split float circuit. These economic recovery benefits with magnetic aggregation of the split float feed, has led to the incorporation of this technology in the plant.INTRODUCTIONThe BHP-Billiton owned Cannington silver, lead and zinc mine is located in the Australian state of Queensland about 800 kilometres west of the coastal city of Townsville. This is a pastoral area characterised by large cattle farms, low population density and very little infrastructure. The area has two seasons, a wet, hot summer and a dry, mild winter. Because of its isolation and lack of infrastructure the mine has always operated on a fly in fly out basis.Geological drilling defined the resource as 43.8 million tonnes grading 11.6% lead, 4.4% zinc and 538 ppm silver (Walters and Bailey, 1998).
