ABSTRACT Northern Saskatchewan boasts some of the world’s largest known high-grade uranium deposits. The successful mining of these deposits cannot be accomplished without overcoming technical challenges, however, which include high grade of the uranium ore, specialized mining methods to deal with groundwater at high pressures, and poor ground conditions. This paper discusses the various mechanisms of inflows at three of Cameco Corporation’s sites in northern Saskatchewan. The risk of inflows is quantified in terms of unique challenges due to hydrogeological conditions, rock mass integrity, and uncertainty in geological conditions. Strategies in the case of an inflow are also briefly described.

"Explosives used in blasting operations, natural and anthropogenic sources such as septic systems,fertilizers, and decomposing vegetation can potentially contaminate groundwater with nitrate in thevicinity of construction sites and make identification of blasting impacts difficult. Blasting operationsfor a private construction project in Windham, New Hampshire were indicated as the source of water quality impacts to private drinking water wells prompting the New Hampshire Department ofTransportation (NHDOT) to implement a proactive approach to limit the potential for impacts fromblasting for ongoing NHDOT projects. NHDOT has developed a baseline drinking water monitoringprogram designed to detect potential impacts and to ensure alternative drinking water is providedthroughout the construction phase of projects. In 2013, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) andNHDOT began a study to determine the source and fate of nitrogen compounds near blasting sites using a combination of isotopic, time series, geochemical, hydrologic, and geologic data. Approximately 1.75 million cubic yards (1.33 cubic meters) of rock were removed by blasting in several locations for roadway construction at a major highway construction site in southern New Hampshire."

Abstract The design of deep excavation pits in rock mass is dependent as well on the mechanical properties of the rock mass as for example the orientation and the type of discontinuities like bedding planes, joints and fissures, the length of the discontinuities (persistence), the grade of weathering, the strength of rock mass, and the shear strength in the discontinuities, etc., and also on the respective boundary conditions specific for the project, and here especially the geometrical boundary conditions. The basic mutual influences and interactions between these boundary conditions are explained and exemplary presented at an excavation pit with a depth of 18,5 m, situated at a slope with a surface near groundwater table. Résumé La planification des excavations profondes dépend aussi bien de la qualité mécanique du roc, par exemple la location de la texture de la surface de moindre résistance, le degré de rupture, le degré de décomposition, la dureté du roc et la résistance limitée au cisaillement de la texture de la surface de moindre résistance que des conditions limitées spécifiques pour le projet, ici en particulier des conditions limitées géométriques. Late Cretaceous Blue Spur Conglomerate preserved as isolated remnants at Gabriels Gully, Weatherstones, Forsyth, Waitahuna Gully and Adams Flat was deposited during the intiation and early stages of extensional movement on the Tuapeka Fault zone at each locality. The deposits represent successive courses of a single fluvial system flowing across the Tuapeka Fault zone from the up-thrown (northeast) block. Each course, beginning with the channel at Gabriels Gully, was abandoned as a result of uplift-induced defeated antecedence in favour of a new course farther to the southeast around the southeast-propagating tip of the Tuapeka Fault zone. Schist and quartz in the conglomerate was derived ultimately from schistose rocks northeast of the Tuapeka Fault zone. Caples Terrane greywacke detritus in the middle and upper beds of the conglomerate was probably recycled from pre-existing sedimentary cover on the up-thrown block, following initiation of uplift on the Tuapeka Fault zone at each locality. Most of the gold is derived from vein sources in Otago Schist rocks to the north, and/or associated placers. Hydrothermal veins at Waipori, Hindon, Barewood, and Macraes are the most likely primary sources. There is no evidence to support previous interpretations of deposition by river systems flowing from the southwest, or axially along the Tuapeka Fault zone from northwest to southeast. High gold grades within Blue Spur Conglomerate should have a linear trend more or less similar to the orientation of the host channels, but are likely to drop off rapidly to the southwest. Extensions of the conglomerate-filled channels are unlikely to be preserved, but there is a strong probability that younger placers recycled from the former channels exist.

Seals are explosion-resistant structures built in underground coal mines to isolate abandoned mining areas from the active workings. An equivalent single degree of freedom (SDOF) method such as the single-degree-of-freedom blast effects design spreadsheet (SBEDS) developed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers can be used to design seals to resist mine explosions. The critical input for the SDOF code is the seal resistance function. The objective for this study is to develop engineering data for design of plain concrete (PC) and reinforced concrete (RC) seals using finite element (FE) models. The FE models can then be used to generate resistance functions for different PC and RC seal designs, which can be used in the SDOF codes. The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) researchers designed and built a test fixture for use in conjunction with NIOSH’s Mine Roof Simulator to apply a four-point bending load on the face of the tested seal. Eight large-scale experiments for each PC and RC seal were conducted. The experimental design considered the effects of the foundation strength, hitching and roof-to-floor convergence. Calibrated FE models for PC and RC seals were developed using ANSYS Ver. 13. With a very limited number of engineering-based assumptions and a single set of data—including Young’s modulus, compressive strength, stress-strain relationships, etc.—the PC and RC seal models successfully calculated the recorded resistance functions and failure patterns for a wide range of boundary conditions. Plug and RC seals were assumed for a 1.83-m- (6-ft-) high entry to demonstrate the application of the calibrated finite element models for calculating the resistance functions of these seals. The resistance function of a particular plug seal case was found to be a bilinear relationship. The resistance function of a particular RC seal without shear reinforcement was found to be a nonlinear relationship.

Most supergene copper heap leach operations today employ forced-aeration, irrespective of ore grade. Unfortunately, there is little published quantification of its benefit. There is a natural desire to strive for the ideal chemical kinetics. The reality, however, is that physical mechanisms control the commercial extraction rate. This paper presents the performance of a number of operations, their operating conditions and physical ore characteristics, which contribute to non-ideal solution distribution and variable extraction rate. Regardless whether one uses forced-aeration, commercial experience to date suggests it is prudent to design for longer leach cycle times to ensure the production target is met.

In 1933, R. paris1 published a phase diagram for the entire Mg-Ca-Zn system. He reported the existence of a ternary intermetallic phase, Mg5Zn5Ca2, which formed a quasi-binary with the magnesium solid solution. Since then, no extensive work has been reported on the system. Recently however, indications of the existence of a second ternary in-termetallic phase in equilibrium with the magnesium solid solution led to a reinvestigation of the solid phase equilibria involving the magnesium solid solution. The 335°C (635°F) isothermal section was chosen for study. Metallography and powder X-ray diffraction were selected as the best mutually corroborating methods for determining the solid phase constitution. Seventy-six alloys were prepared from singly sublimed (99.95 pct) magnesium, electrolytic (99.95 pct) zinc and USP calcium. The analyses of some of the alloys are shown in Fig. 1. The alloys were melted in a graphite crucible under a chloride flu and chill cast in a split graphite mold. Dif-fusion couples (see Fig. 2) were prepared by casting molten Mg-20 wt pct Zn alloy around a cylinder of Mg-30 wt pct Ca alloy. The alloy samples and the diffusion couples were sealed under argon in Pyrex vials and annealed in a furnace capable of controlling within 1/2°C of 335°C. At the conclusion of the anneal, the alloy samples were quenched in ice water and the diffusion couples were air cooled. Procedures standard for magnesium alloys were used for metallographic examination. Powder X-ray diffraction patterns were taken on a G. E. camera with a 14.32 cm dim using nickel-filtered copper radiation. The redetermined 335°C (635°) section of the Mg-Ca-Zn phase diagram is shown in Fig. 1. Tensile strength testing has been one of the most common physical property testing methods of thin spray-on liner (TSL) products worldwide. However, the variety of products tested has been insufficient for comparison purposes. Specimen preparation procedures and test parameters such as curing time and loading rate are not reported well. Comprehensive tensile strength testing on 20TSL products and one plain shotcrete brand was performed over 28days of curing period. Detailed information on the test procedures with particular attention on the important aspects during sample preparation and test execution are provided. As expected, the tensile strength increases with increasing curing period. The test results make the categorization and comparison of liner products possible.

Nonsteady-state flow of slightly compressible liquids in porous media of non-uniform properties has been the subject of a number of recent studies. Most of these studies considered one-dimensional flow in systems with cylindrical geometry and with the properties of the porous medium varying with radial distance only. A. Houpeurt' studied the problem in its general form by examining the solutions of the differential equation, In Eq. 1, the permeability k and the porosity + are arbitrary functions of radial distance. Houpeurt concluded that, except for special forms of the functions k and the problem is not well suited for mathematical treatment, but lends itself to high-speed digital computation. Carslaw and Jaeger' discussed the solution of Eq. 1 for the case in which the permeability varies as a power of the radial distance. P. Albert3 studied analytically the pseudo steady-state solutions in systems of finite radial extent and non-uniform properties. He also obtained some numerical solutions for nonsteady-state flow using a high-speed computer. William Hurst4 examined the interference pressure drop due to a point sink located in an infinite system consisting of two permeability regions in series. In this case, the permeability changed at a radial distance r from the point sink. INTERFERENCE BETWEEN OIL FIELDS IN A NON-UNIFORM AQUIFER The interference pressure drop for oil fields located in an extensive aquifer of uniform properties is discussed in a number of places in the literature. This work considers the interference pressure drop for oil fields located in a non-uniform extensive aquifer comprising two regions of different properties as shown in Fig. 1. Region I of the aquifer extends from which is the radius of Oil Field A, to ar,,, where a>1. It has permeability k,, porosity +, and effective compressibility c,. Oil Field B is located in Region II which extends from ar, to infinity and has different properties from those of Region I, but the same formation thickness h. Region II has permeability k2, porosity and effective compressibility c2. The choice of this type of aquifer should not imply that it is of frequent occurrence. It is chosen primarily to illustrate the effects of non-uniform aquifer properties on oilfield interference. It is of interest to point out that a non-uniform radial aquifer in which both the permeability and the porosity are inversely proportional to the radial distance can be treated in a manner similar to a linear aquifer of uniform properties. The situation where only the permeability varies as the inverse of the radial distance is also amenable to analytical treatment. Both aquifers behave quite differently from a radial aquifer with uniform properties so far as the water influx and the interference pressure drop are concerned. METHOD OF SOLUTION The expression for the interference pressure drop in Oil Field B due to a constant rate of water influx in Oil Field A is developed in the Appendix. This is accomplished by the simultaneous solution of two partial differential equations describing the pressure in Regions I and 11. The production of all Russian fields incressed from approsimatctly 74,000,000 bbl. during 1926-27, to approximately 83,000,000 bbl. during 1927-28. Of this amount Baku was responsible for 54,.500,000 bbl., Grozny for 25,800,000 bbl., and Emba for 1,200,000 bbl. Accordingly, the proportional importance of the Grozny oil field has been considerably increased, the present production being twice that of 1913. The most notable factor of production during 1927-28 was the importance of gushers; 40.8 per cent. of the total was thus obtained. In the Baku fields 26 per cent. of the total, and in Grozny 74.2 percent'. of the total were produced by naturally flowing wells. This may be explained by the reduction in authorizations for drilling by the central authorities, and, accordingly, the local trusts increased the production to the planned figures at the expense of the proved prolific reserves. In Baku region, the Surnkany oil field produced 36.1 per cent. of the total Baku production, or an equivalent of 53,800 bbl. per clay, the largest percentage coining from the fifth horizon. Nest year's plans call for continual development of that horizon as well as of the sixteenth horizon in the Bibi-Eibat field, which was opened lately. In the Grozny fields the New Area (Bellik) WAS responsible for 79.4 per cent. of the total production. The authorized plan for 1928-29 production calls for 92,200,000 bid., and a reasonably accurate estimate for 1932--33 production is placed at. 156,000,000 bbl., with Baku contributing 101,800,000 bbl., Grozny 44,100,000 bbl., Emba 6,200,000 bbl., Kuban 2,100,000 bbl., Saghalien Island 1,400,000 bbl., and Russian Turkestan 400,000 bbl. In connection with recent discoverices in the Baku area these figures art. quite conservative. The average production per well per day in the Baku oil fields was 49.2 bbl., in Grozny 175 bbl.; in detail, Surakany oil field averaged 250 bbl., and the New Area in Grozny 514 bbl. per day. New completions in all Baku fields averaged 264 bbl. per day, and in Grozny 970 bbl. pel. day. These figures show a considerable progress in the technical developnlent of all fields, compared even with the prerevolution figures, since all the mprovements are noted in the fields that arc over 30 years old.

"The Sturgeon Lake Joint Venture volcanic massive sulpide deposit was discovered in 1970. Milling was started by Falconbridge Copper Ltd. at Sturgeon Lake in September 1974. The Sturgeon Lake pit and mill are located 88 kilometers by road northeast of Ignace, Ontario. IgnE1ce is a town of some 2800 people located on the Trans-Canada Highway, 241 kilometers west-northwest of Thunder Bay. The mill is treating an average of 1100 TPD producing separate concentrates of copper, lead and zinc. Initially, difficulties were experienced in achieving accept-able concentrate grades and recoveries but these were eventually overcome. This presentation describes current metallurgical strategy as practiced at the Sturgeon Lake mill.But first, a few words about the type of ore being treated. In geological terms the ore is classified into two main categories. They are the massive sulphides with underlying zones of stringer sulphides as illustrated in Fig. 1. The plan view is shown in Fig. 2. The areas of East-limb and North-limb are as shown. These last two ores have suffered enough alteration to cause problems during treatment. The massive sulphides consist of chalcopyrite, sphalerite, galena, tetrahedrite and small amounts of pyrrhotite among other gangue materials. The stringer ore is comprised of predominantly chalcopyrite intrusions into rhyolite and has lesser amounts of sphalerite and tetrahedrite. At present we are treating a predetermined blend of massive and stringer ores from zones that have been metallurgically tested to ensure compatibility with current treatment procedure in the plant. Ore responding to this treatment is classified as normal ore while the ore proving incompatible is classified as north-limb ore or east-limb ore."

Hydrophobic materials that are robust to harsh environments are needed in a broad range of applications. Although durable materials such as metals and ceramics, which are generally hydrophilic, can be rendered hydrophobic by polymeric modifiers, these materials deteriorate in harsh environments. Here it is shown that a class of ceramics comprising the entire lanthanide oxide series, ranging from ceria to lutecia, is intrinsically hydrophobic. Their hydrophobicity is attributed to their unique electronic structure, which inhibits hydrogen bonding with interfacial water molecules. In addition, this work demonstrates that these ceramics sustain hydrophobicity even after exposure to high-temperature environment (1000 °C for 2 h in air). It is envisioned that this class of robust hydrophobic materials will have far-reaching technological potential in various industrial applications, where water repellency and dropwise condensation are desirable.

There has been an ongoing research on coal and gas outburst for the past two decades at the School of Civil, Mining and Environmental Engineering, University of Wollongong. Research study began with a humble beginning, initially conducting basic laboratory studies on the coal and gas properties, progressing into the determination of gas content of coal by sorption technique and the effect of gas pressures on coal strength. The present laboratory facilities and research interests are extended to include the study of coal permeability and shrinkage properties and their effect of gas drainage characteristics with respect to gas type, and pressures. All the changes are examined with respect to changing in-site geological conditions of the coal deposit investigated. The aim is to provide a long-term support to industry in establishing a data bank for Australian coal deposit characteristics and properties.

"On average, one out of two glass bottles coming on to the market is provided by recycling processes in Europe. Glass recycling has been started by the early of 1970s in Turkey, and the recycling amount has been reached to 70 thousand tons recently, while 4.2 million tons which represents only 25 percent of total glass manufactured, is the amount of glass collected annually for recycling in the world. The glass recycle process basically involves collecting, sorting, then crushing and grinding after which glass cullet is produced as the secondary raw material. Removing of the contaminants from the glass cullet, and then melting are the next steps. In this study, recent developments of 100% recyclable without any deterioration in quality, and never decomposable glass, are discussed detailed in terms of glass production processes.1.IntroductionIn many countries, waste glass constitutes a large proportion of solid wastes, and recycling the glass is a major environmental problem all over the world [1]. Among the diverse types of waste, glass is one of the most valuable recycling materials because it can be revived and recycled completely and hardly decomposes [2]. Between 80% and 85% of the mass output from the worldwide glass industry is either in the form of containers for the food, beverage, and pharmaceutical industries, or flat glass for building construction or for motor vehicle manufacture. Other product segments, whilst only constituting about 15% of the mass output, produce high value technical and consumer products by comparison with container and flat glass [3].In the present study, the recycling of Liquid Crystal Display (LCD), Cathode Ray Tubes (CRT) and Printed Circuit Boards (PCB) were examined. The production of glasses and glass-ceramics from glass cullet, synthesis of different compounds from recycled glass were other subjects of interest. The use of recycled glass for construction industry and using glass as aggregate were emphasized. Finally the recovery of glass fibers were investigated."

The implementation of a Quality Management System (QMS) or an Environmental Management System (EMS) that conforms to the standards issued by the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) no longer needs to result in a bureaucratic nightmare supported by mounds of paperwork. In this sense, this paper describes the Quality Management System that was implemented and demonstrates how the technologies that were developed can be used to satisfy other similar requirements.

The use of comparative sampling methods during the evaluation of the tin-copper deposits at Cleveland mine yielded closely checking average results from groove, channel, AXT split diamond drill core, and bulk sampling for both tin and copper content of the ore.The weighted mean tin and copper grades and values for the groove, channel, and split core samples showed small percentage differences from bulk sample results, and the F-ratio test for single population origin of the four types of samples was accepted at the 99· 5 per cent level of confidence.These results indicate that grade estimates based on the assays from AXT split diamond drill core and/or groove samples would be reliable within practical limits.

The ‘Metallurgical Operations’ Department of Grinaker-LTA Process Engineering (GLTA) currently undertakes then primary mining as well as the re-deposition of tailings forTicor South Africa (Ticor) at their Hillendale mine near Empangeni, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The mining plant, which was designed by GLTA on a Build, Own, Operate and Transfer (BOOT) basis, is capable of mining 780 000 tons per month of ROM material which is then pumped to the Primary Wet Plant for treatment by Ticor. Hydraulic mining via high pressure water cannons and subsequent transfer of the heavy mineral slurry at an RD of between 1.35 and 1.48, has never before been undertaken successfully at this level of production on an in situ reserve. The presentation will take the form of a case study in which the unique site operating conditions will be detailed and discussed, as will the innovative process and engineering solutions employed by GLTA to overcome the engineering and production challenges encountered. In order to protect the intellectual property involved in this operation, this paper is fairly general in nature, and attempts merely to provide the reader with a broad perspective understanding of the operation, and some of the difficulties encountered during the early stages of production.
